Lucked out and got her. She has powerpoint presentation which help with notes and gives practice test. Gives up to 20 points extra credit which helps a lot.
She is an amazing teacher. If I was not in her class, I would drop this class already. She inspired me to study and cared for us a lot.Who can remember all the students name these days? She remembers everyones name. I really like her a lot. I was lucky to be in her class.
Maines took over for my A&P class when Hoffman was out for the semester. Huge downgrade. She puts every other sentence from the book on her powerpoint, which when you print comes out to like 28 pages per chapter. Her tests shorter than other teachers, and she doesn't give much extra credit. Take Hoffman or Gargan if you can!
Dr. Maines is awesome. She's to the point, though she does go over numerous power points, she's following the syllabus. When she has free time, she reviews. She offers extra credit. She's timely. Her tests are fair. She's considerate. I adore her. I almost dropped out, then decided I'd try her. Glad I did. Changed my life.
This woman cares. Which is so important. I would definitely recommend her. Taking her for A&P2, actually, this summer. I'll get an A then as well.
Took over class mid semester when our prof became ill. Did a great job catching us up. Great reinforcement of material with powerpoint, powerpoint notes, review tests and tests straight from the text. Super sweet and very helpful. Does daily review with extra credit points. I'd recommend her.
This lady is greatness. If you need to LEARN AP, go with her.
Gives lots of oppurtunities for extra credit, lots of helpful notes, clear objectives when it comes to tests, practice tests help out alot, really up with technology and using CampusCruiser to the classes advantage, wants everyone to succeed, makes biology for scince majors actually interesting and fun, has days where you just have class discussion
I had her for A&P I lab and I loved her. She would answer any questions and stay after lab was over to go over material if you didn't understand. As of Summer shes an Adjunct, but if you can taker her DO
Dr Maines is a great professor. She reinforces her lectures with relevant questions. This is a tough course that demands attendance and home study.Dr Maines is approachable wants you to succeed. She combines helpful lab objectives in her lecture material. She offers plenty of extra credit quizzes for those who attend lecture.I strongly recommend her.
Cool Lady, very nice but Her teaching style is not for me. I don't like all the power points..lecture is kindof dull. PROS- extra credit, attend class so you don't miss out! you can tell she cares about students success.
I havent even finished this class yet and I LOVE this teacher. Everything she wants you to know she tells you. She tests off of her powerpoints AND she gives extra credit. I HIGHLY recommend. I took AP 1 with Gargan and she is a good teacher but Dr Maines is so much more clear on what she expects from you.
I am taking Dr. Maines for lab this semester and she is awesome. She answers questions and if you're looking to review for lab tests she is willing to help you. Dr. Aliaga writes the lab tests but she reviews them ahead of time and lets you know what is going to be detailed on the test so you can focus on it. Taking her lecture + lab for BIOL1407.
Best Biology teacher... that's it, hands down, she wins, go home (and register for her class)
Professor Maines is the best. Yes, there's a lot of power point slides. There's also (gasp) a TON of material. I felt she simplified it well. This class is something you have to be dedicated to, if you don't work for it, you won't get it. Extra credit, points out lab topics, very helpful and flexible (were you to miss a class.) Team Maines!!
She is HARD! However, she will help you on anything and everything...she is the best. She warns you that the class is difficult AND she tells you what you need to do to succeed so there are no surprises. If you attend class you will get easy extra credit. I would easily take her again.
She's all right, for being from the great white north...Dont Cha Know...
Took her for A&P 1 at TCC NE campus. Moved by South campus and still registered to take her class at NE. She is a difficult professor, but you learn the material. Extra credit is bountiful. Don't expect to skate by in this class or you will end up dropping, but if you want to learn and get your money's worth, definitely register for her class.
This class is very difficult. There are no reviews. Study 5 or more pages per chapter of objectives (about 3 chapters a test) then study the test reviews. She asked questions there were not in the book. Research random stuff online and study the material. I have taken Junior level class at a university and her class is by far more difficult.
I took her lab and she is pretty hard. The labs are not very organized. Expect to have a lab practical of random stuff of 100-200 questions. I would recommend taking Biology at another campus other then NE or a university.
Professor just reads directly from the slides without explaining. Its a class where you would have to study by yourself to learn the contents. Textbook is highly recommended. She gives a lot of power points and paperwork that are not really relevant. There is no review or study guide for the test. The labs are very hard and incomprehensive.
She is very hard, you will have to study and learn by yourself, because she offers no explanations whatsoever. Her text questions are very hard and not from materials covered in class.
Listen and you too can master biology. She expects you to have read the chapter before attending lecture, but this is important if you want to pass. Taken her twice and may follow her into A&P. SUPER TEACHER!!!!! PS. This is a class for SCIENCE MAJORS.
I took her because of her good reviews and I'm sorry that I did. Her powerpoints and lecture are pretty useless for helping you through the material. I could of just skipped class and read at home and done just as wellI don't want the answers directly given to me just some insight added on top of my independent work. An A is still obtainable.
don't take her. she is really heard. no reveive. practice test also not help full.
She's not really clear on whats going on in class. I thought she was very dissmisive to me and had favorites. I just followed the objectives and did well. She is however funny and lots of EC is available.
Pls don'take this instructor except you want to make a low grade. I took her because of the reviews but i made the biggest mistake ever. Am an A+ student and studies hard, but this instructor made the class hard. She has favourites and i thought she was biased towards some certain students. She doesn't explain in class, but reads over the slides.
please don't take. she is really heard, no revews. and mean too,
Pls don't take this instructor, she is really hard and not helpful in any way,she makes you print out irrelevant materials and teach in a weird way. She just reads off her slides without explaining, her text questions are the hardest ever, pls get another instructor!
She is hard, and gives no reviews, her tests are very hard and incomprehensible, teaching style is not that great, just reads off the test book, i could have stayed at home and study the textbook and pass.
Dr. Maines is great, offers lots of extra credit & from day one powerpoints & test reviews were online. Always nice & helpful. Don't believe what her 1406ers say from last semester, their test average was about 15 pts lower than previous classes with the exact same test. That said, this is a majors class & it is hard, lab is a LOT of info to learn.
extremely hard class, I tried my best, but her teaching style was difficult. overwhelmed over PowerPoint, identical to the book. lecture very boring,I felt like when it came time for exam it was very tricky. even with the review.
tonns of irrelevant power point slides. She is not helpful. The class is hard, but she doesnt help at all. Explanations are poor as you are expected to read the slides.
hard class, difficult instructor,
Dr. Maines is there for you when you need her. She explains things as any other professor would in an educational setting. Science is hard, but if you want to learn from someone who knows what they are doing. Take her. She will take time to listen to you and help you if you need it. If you want an A. Study. Extra credit is readily available :)
Dr. Maines is a competent, organized and communicative instructor. She is fun in lab and always willing to help you understand a concept IF you come to her. I recommend reading the book and lab manual sections prior to class sessions, as the lectures are technical and her ability to help you will be based on the quality of the questions you ask.
Dr. Maines is an amazing teacher. Everything was in black and white and she is completely willing to help if you will just ask. She doesn't teach easy classes but she made major's bio as painless as possible. I'm taking her again next semester for the second half. Take her for lecture and lab!
Maines is great! Always available during office hours and she records her lectures for students. But be warned - you will have to work your tail off for an A. (;
Great instructor! Majors bio is difficult, but she made it do-able. I didn't like the group project though.
Material is very hard, but she explains it well -good with analogies and mnemonics. She gives lots of extra credit and some easy online work that can beef up your grade. Tests are long and you MUST study the book. She allows the class to be disruptive and off topic which can be really distracting. Always willing to help if you just ask. Very fair.
Great teacher! New teaching style this semester with more class interaction, it was good but required a little more self study. A's don't come easy in major's bio but if you try hard she will help you get there.
Dr. Maines is a wonderful person and very helpful teacher.
I really enjoyed her lecture style, and she posts recording of her lectures which is very helpful.
I love this teacher!! This is a very difficult class. There is SO much to know in a very little amount of time. Her lectures are very thorough & records them. I listened to them through out the week. She stresses "I recommend you know this.." and it WILL be on her exams. She gives extra credit & offers her help at all times! She is great.
Dr. Maines is a great teacher. I would reccomend her to anyone. She is hard and you have to dedicate your life to the class if you want to make a good grade. But she is very helpful and understanding about your situation. I would not recommend this class with other classes or work because it is very demanding that you study. But she is great.
Very nice and passionate bht does Expects highly for class to do well. tests are hard and cover a lot of information. Attendance is a must and So is the book.
She is great! She really cares about the students and will help out with anything you need in the class. Very patient and makes class fun.
Dr. Maines is an amazing prof that truly cares about her students and the quality of information they learn during the course. Something I love about her classes: she is objective and FAIR. She challenges her students and anyone who complains about her classes probably isn't used to being challenged.
AMAZING teacher, very knowledgeable. She expects you to know your stuff! Exams are hard but she records Lectures and Labs. I took to many hours this semester and had to drop but will be taking her next semester!
An AMAZING teacher! Records her labs & lectures, uploaded w/in hours (a big plus!). Always available. Extra credit @ start of class w quiz/ open book. She gives you all the info to learn the material. Goes over what is hard. Stays on schedule, so end of year is not crunched like other classes. Study tons for any teacher in A&P. Slackers beware.
Excellent professor who truly wants to see her students succeed. Very organized and stays on task. Clearly indicates what level of effort is expected of her students to succeed in A&P in both lecture and lab. Gives 4 lecture exams, final is optional if you are satisfied with your 4 unit test scores. Extra credit only applies to final though.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE. She acts like a university professor and does not care what grade you get. She does not teach but rather gives questions about the material in class which does not help on the exams.
LOVE HER! She is funny and can teach in a way that makes sense. She keeps the class engaged and asks around to keep you on your toes; it really helps you learn. Extra credit from before-class questions helps you remember stuff from past classes. Take her! She is awesome.
She was a really great professor, but the class was hard as I'll get out. She recorded the lectures for us and posted them on Blackboard. She lectures and gives homework straight from the textbook, so you absolutely have to have it! I am a straight A student and I studied like crazy but I barely managed a low B.
She is a really smart woman. She can answer every question. However, her teaching style is very rough - you must know the material before class because the lecture consists of looking through random pp slides and answering questions about the material you should have read. For science majors, this will be interesting. But it's a hard class.
Worse lab. Nothing like lecture. Too time consuming. Nice teacher but will take somewhere else.
Dr. Maines is a great teacher! You have to come to class every day. She makes you work for it and if you want an easy A you should look elsewhere. If you want to actually learn Biology you should take her class and her lab. Do the homework, listen to her lectures again (she records them) and do the cumulative tests (some questions are on there) (:
Be sure to start studying from Day 1. She is very resourceful. Make use of class audio recordings that she gives, study groups and assignments, extra credit and DO NOT miss the final. Its not a walk in the park but in the end, it will be well worth it.
Dr. Maines acts like a university professor and grades like one too. If you don't do good on the tests and arrive late you are on her bad side meaning no matter what you do you will not pass her class. Mastering Biology online homework was hard and very time consuming, she put a timer on all assignments.
My favorite prof. EVER!!! If you are serious about biology and want to LEARN, take her class. No one has ever taught me anything better than she has: I actually REMEMBER MATERIAL because of her style. I'm a fan and totally look up to her! Recommended for biology majors and serious students only.
She comes off as monotone and dull, she reads materials straight from powerpoints and class can get very boring. I often doze off several times in lecture because the material is worded straight from the book. Tests are tough and tricky, lab is time consuming and she is a very tough grader.
She is very tough, and takes off points for every small error. The tests are nothing like the lecture and are difficult. The average exam grades were in the 60s!! She teaches the class like a university professor.
Prof. Maines is very reasonable. However, the amount of assignments and tests she gives within a short time period is simply UNREASONABLE. She also tends to take off points for the smallest errors, both on tests AND essays, which is unfortunate because she would probably be the best bio prof. if she didn't have these loathsome grading methods...
She is a horrible professor who does not show any concern for failing students. She ignores any pleas for help. She only gives out A's to a few students in her class who she likes and will fail everyone else with not a care in the world. Definitely one the worst biology professors out there.
Dr. Maines was the hardest professor I've ever had. She does give an enormous amount of homework due weekly but she also gives daily quizzes for extra points on your final. Her classes consists of 5 exams. She drops lowest grades on homework and exam. She also records her lectures which are essential to pass. This class is NOT easy!!!!
Ignore 1407 students who failed or did bad themselves and blamed it on her!she is the best science professor I have had. Lectures are amazing and her teaching style helps you remember materials IN CLASS if you pay attention. Tests are hard, tbh,but I learned so much in this class. She is really smart, resourceful and funny if you get to know her.
She is awesome. Amazing lectures, gives extra credits for final exam, records her lecture so you can listen again, always available to help. Her tests are tricky and a lot of application questions, and some fairly easy essay questions. She is really smart and organized, and really professional. Will take her again definitely.
Daily quizzes but she is very clear on her expectations. You will learn a lot in her class and you will have to earn your grade. I don't care what anyone says about her, I would take her again. It is after all a college level class and most students will need it to transfer to a university. Don't expect any science class to be easy.
She is a must for students that want to be prepared for the higher university level science classes. You must work for your grade. It's not impossible to achieve what you want to get out from this class, you just have to work for it. I appreciate taking 1406 with Dr. Maines because now I have a foundation built for all my other courses.
Amazing professor not and very accommodating toward students with specific needs or disabilities. If you need help just ask, but don't expect her to baby you; it definitely wont happen. Her tests are very tough but she gives you objectives to study for every chapter; STUDY THE OBJECTIVES! Best professor I've met.
Dr. Maines is amazing. She should be cloned and able to teach all Biology relative courses. I was lucky enough to take her for 1406 and 1407 and her lectures are amazing. She is very smart and always available for help during her office hours. Learn the course objectives, make an A on the tests, its that simple. I took twice (1406 1407).
I took her for 1406 and 1407. I have taken these classes with other professors and while the subject is difficult her test are by far the easiest out of other professors. Very clear in what is asked of you, you just have to put in the work. If you put in all you can give, and still don't pass her class science probably isn't the major for you.
She's a great, great professor. The material itself is somewhat challenging but she makes it less of a daunting task to learn. Her lectures are informative but you really need to read chapters in conjunction with the lectures.
Prof. Maines is a good professor if you are knowledgeable in Science. However I believe a great professor is able to understand not everyone has a science background or is fresh out of high school and take that into consideration when teaching. She does not. Either you get it or you don't. She will explain if you ask, but don't expect it.
This class is an intro biology class for majors. The material itself is not difficult but the way she teaches or lack there of is. No test reviews, extensive amounts of homrwork, and reading. The test questions are not worded in a way of understanding. It truly feels like she wants her students to fail. Don't take her if you like biology&wanna pass
She doesn't make you know every single detail, just know how to apply/application base tests, if you're going to advance in science field then eat the bullet now you'll be better off later on. she dose try to help you if asked. She doesn't bite and her jokes are kinda funny.
Super great teacher. She's extremely helpful and it isn't fair for her to get a low easiness score BC the class isn't a blowoff class. She's super great though. Posts voice lectures online. Reading sometimes helps.
Dr. Maines was phenomenal. I took her class two years ago. Im currently enrolled in Microbiology for pre-med at the university level. I actually remember what she taught me two years later. This is one of the few classes that I can say I LEARNED the material. Great for those pursuing a degree in science as you will need recall this material.
It is fair that she receives low ratings. As I have taken this class with another professor who made this class actually what it was intended for. She does not know how to teach that is her down fall. She is an intelligent professor but one that does not connect with students and makes it very difficult to learn.
You can pass this class, but you have to go to class and make sure that you read and understand the textbook. She is nice enough to drop the lowest exam grade in lecture. Make sure you read your notes from the previous class before lecture because there are daily quizzes that turn into extra credit for the final. Good luck!
Definitely would NOT take again. I was taking Organic chemistry 2, Physic 2, and Cal 1 and her class gave me the most problems. Lots of homework, quizzes, and research papers. Also she purposely make her tests tricky. I don't know why I trusted these positive review, I wished I had seen all the thumbs down on them.
Great professor. Grading criteria is clear. Tons of extra credit opportunities. I would take another class from her any time!
She is a great professor, ask for help and she will try her best to help you. If it is evident you're trying, she will try her best as well. BUT THIS IS A TOUGH COURSE WITH HER, YOUR GRADE WILL BE WHATEVER YOU PUT IN. This is not a joke course and you should take it only if you're a Biology major. This is a passable class by all means.
If you take this class make sure you have the time to study and get a good study group going ASAP!
Dr. Maines is by all means an intellect and I respect that although the wording on her tests purposely tricked students and a simple question made practically the whole class fail. She is a good professor, but if you take her you must by all means live and breath biology and study every day, this is by no means an easy A, but it is possible.
Dr. Maines is very good at explaining the material in both lab and lecture. She doesn't usually take late work or let you make up missed stuff. The exams are not hard, but not easy. You will need to study. I learned that searching youtube for the lessons and watching those videos was more helpful than the book which I stopped using after realizing.
This is by far the worst professor Ive had. Maybe its due to everything being online, but avoid her at all costs. She BRIEFS you on the material and then expects you to know it all? The exams are super difficult since you arent being taught anything! If you want to do better in her class, her advice is to change the way YOU study. AVOID.
I enjoyed Professor Maines, her lectures and quizzes are straight foward. For exams, you do have to do a bit of extra reading but it's not bad. She replies to emails fast and is willing to help you on things that you don't understand in the class. The only minor thing I can say is that she doesn't really give enough time for quizzes, but my opinion
I cannot recommend this professor at any level. Online class is way too hard. Does not understand that we are taking other classes.
Dr. Maines is an AMAZING professor! The class was great! You really have to pay attention. I found it helpful to read the free online book when I didn't understand a topic and also benefitted from using other educational resources like khan academy when I was stuck. You'll learn a lot! Was a challenging but fun class, stay engaged and ask questions
This is probably the worst professor at TCC. We had to write a 15+ paper regarding a study we never did because class was online. How do you write a paper over a lab/experiment you never did? It was a big chunk of your grade at the end of the semester. Just avoid her if it means you have to wait a semester for a good professor. It's not worth it.
No opurtunity for extra credit, exams are worth 45% of your grade and she doesn't curve them. little time given to take quizes. It feels like you have never ending homework.
Dr. Maines is amazing! This course was so challenging but she gives students so many opportunities to do well. Extra credit portions on all quizzes and exams, group study extra credit, reading guides and other study materials for a grade. You will very quickly see that Dr. Maines truly cares about her students and really wants them to succeed.
Dr. Maines is a great teacher and she makes sure you have ample opportunities to get a good grade but it is a lot of work. I would say you have to spend at least 12 hours outside of class in order to fully get a good grade. Also, take notes before class so that way you can take extra notes and have ample amount of resources for your assignments.
Teaching wise she was good because she was willing to help us and did presentations in class while giving us access to other materials. If you plan on taking any other classes, good luck! Her class is the only class that matters to her. A quiz every week, 5 exams, new material, and quiz the week of the final, 4 giant essays (due the week of exams).
There are tons of reading guides and practice quizzes but she is an amazing professor. I had her for both lecture and lab and she made sure you had plenty of chances to get a good grade unless you're like me and suck at tests. But overall shes is amazing.
Ms. Maines is great for her lab and lecture in BIO 1407. Loves to help students understand the concepts of biology.
If you want to learn biology, Dr. Maines is about the best instructor there is. Her lecture lessons are short and concise and a welcome replacement for a textbook. They also contain questions at the end of every page which you answer by holding up a notecard, forcing you to pay attention in class. Practice quizzes and tests were super helpful also.
Dr.Maines gives lots of feedback on assignments and has out of class study opportunities. She gives a lot of homework but it's not a big portion of your grade and meant to help you study for exams. She also is lenient on late work and very understanding when you talk to her. You can tell she cares and she is clear in her instruction.
I had Dr. Maines this semester (Fall 2023) for BIOL 1406 and she is an amazing professor. Good lecturer, asks the class tons of questions to ensure understanding, and also provides great feedback. Clear rubrics. With that being said, this is not an easy class. You cannot slack off, it's important you be in class and take notes/study.
Personally one of the best professors I have ever taken! You definitely have to put in the work and effort if you want to receive a good grade, but her lectures and assignments are very straight-forward and interesting. The textbook is online and a group project towards the end. All of the assignments are meant for you to learn and study.
This is not an easy class and you will need to put in a lot of effort if you want to get an A. Dr. Maines is a great teacher and wants to see her students succeed.
She has been teaching for years. It shows. Tone is monotone. Words start to sounds the same from lack of inflection. She knows the subject well, but that's not good when she can't remember not all of us are experts. We did a quiz on terms and information she didn't teach until the following class. Only way you pass this class is to teach yourself.
Go to all lectures if you want to do well. Exams are worth 70% of the final grade and there are weekly in-class quizzes. The content itself is hard but she provides practice quizzes with unlimited attempts, reading guides, and learning objectives which make it very clear what to expect on quizzes and exams.
Lots of studying. Quizzes every week after the previous lecture. I advise to UTILIZE practice quizzes and practice exams. Sometimes there are questions from those that will be on the quiz/exam. For lab, there are group projects and quite a few lab reports. Also, the professors grading is strict. Overall, she is a great Professor who helps students.
Dr. Maines' BIO1406 class is challenging but rewarding. Engagement is key - take notes, ask questions, and utilize resources like the free textbook and educational platforms like Unstuck ai. Though strict on attendance, she provides great feedback. With effort, you can succeed in this demanding yet worthwhile course.
Wonderful professor. All power points in one drive, records lecture audios, gives extra credit on exams. Super kind and caring, just have to put in the work. Some assignments feel like busy work but they really help in learning/remembering tough material.
She's fantastic overall. I loved her class, and she clearly loves teaching. The only warning I would give is that her exam/quiz questions will challenge your comprehension and application simultaneously, which I respect. So prepare to study quite a bit because basic memorization won't push you through this course. You need to genuinely understand.
expects students to be as educated as her, favoritism starts from the beginning of the semester, unnecessarily tough grader for a beginner bio class, nitpicks the smallest details and counts off for it,little to no enthusiasm when asked for help, had to ask our TA for help, rude person overall, doesn't want to help u succeed, do not take this professor!
