Great guy, Really organized class structure. Decient marker if you do the readings
Really great teacher! I would *definately* take him again.
Good prof. Real nice guy and well organized. very fair marker and clear teaching style.
BEST TEACHER I EVER HAD..LECTURES ARE INTERESTING AND CLEAR AND WELL TAUGHT...I AM ACTUALLY GOING AN EXTRA SEMESTER TO TAKE JUST 1 MORE CLASS HE IS TEACHING THATS HOW GOOD HE IS...
WOW! he is the greatest teacher i had. His class are fun and open for debate and questions. He knows what he's talking about. I recommand him!
Excellent prof. Makes class interesting. One of the reasons why our faculty is the best in Canada. He knows his stuff. I definatley learned alooot from him. and i would definately recommend him.
Well read, fair, open to debate, respectful, hillarious, and the list goes on. A+ for Prof. Mayer!
Take good notes, know them from top to bottom, regurgitate, and get 95.
he is easy to follow along with and is a great teacher, makes everything clear and is very approachable, just stay on top of some of the readings, and thats it
I wouldn't take this class again. I felt marginalized because I am not well-versed in latin american politics already, and he favours those who are. Exams very difficult. Put over 1/2 of the course readings on reserve=pain in the a**. Boo.
He is very direct and his class notes are very complete. He gives options on exams therefore you may chose not to do the readings which is for me very good since some teachers base their entire exams on the books.
smart, funny and kinda hot
Best Prof at Concordia.
Quite interesting and easy to talk to outside class. However, exams are quite tough, must keep up with readings because things not seen in lectures are in the tests also.
He is amazing, and does not prefer cretain groups over others. He is smart, kind, and passionate about what he does. He course are extremely interesting; I recommend him 100%!
Great teacher, loves what he does, explains passionatly but sometimes goes a bit too fast and his exams are pretty hard.
Outstanding teacher. Demanding but fair and agreable. You will learn alot, just make sure you stay afloat of the readings.
Excellent, excellent teacher, I've has 3 classes with him. All you have to do is show up to class, take lots of notes because his lectures are very well organized and concise. And read (especially in his 400-level class). He can be extremely helpful as well. His exams aren't too difficult, just let his question lead your answers.

This is a joke! I got a very good grade, but the class was a waste of time.

Took his online course. Doesn't give any feedback to his students. Doesn't respond to any emails. Discussion boards are worth 30% of the final mark, yet are graded very harshly and marks are always disappearing. Provides no help on the final whatsoever, seems as though he doesn't care if his students fail.
I totally agree with the comments below! I took his Human Rights class because I was interested in the subject, but found this class a complete waste. Maybe he is better in classroom, but his internet class is just a way for him to make money! Is this guy even competent to teach sucha subject matter??!!

Took his HR class online. Can't comment too much about the prof himself since there is 0 contact with him. You deal 100% with the TA and there is no lecture material. All you need to know is what is in the text, which, i could have taken out from the library and read at home with less cost and trouble. Not a hard class, but kind of pointless.
Agree with the comments below. He might be a good professor, but you get no feedback from him, zero contact. I heard the Human Rights class was a success when taught by a Romanian, but she is no longer in the department. Too back they chose this loser instead!
Like others have mentioned, discussion board grades are worth 30% of your grade and my TA was very harsh in the grading, and would "miss" some of my posts. However, still a relatively easy class, didn't read at all until the final and got an A-, I'd recommend it to others, even if my TA was completely useless.
Many in the PSCI department are offering online classes to make a buck, but the deal benefits the prof far more than the student. We had 0 contact with him, he made no effort to provide materials for class. I would not take a class with him again.
Stay away.
I was greatly interested in the subject matter before taking the class. I am not considering taking an advanced class. His lectures are extremely long, too detailed. I would probably have been better off taking taking a different class. Should consider going to a university where students meet all his expectations.
I got As in every other class. This guy has high expectations for everything - and unrealistic for a 300 level class. Hard marker, or didn't instruct his TA how to mark properly. Interesting lectures, but don't take this class if you expect to get a reasonable grade doing a reasobable ammount of work.
Agree with comments below. Prof Mayer has VERY HIGH EXPECTATIONS! His class is too detailed and his exams - Midterms and Finals - are difficult. Avoid if you want to get As.
Worst class I have ever taken stay away!!
It's an average class, don't expect it to be easy and not do the readings on a regular basis. Its not very hard to get a good grade since 30% is participation and 30% quizzes that are 10% each and that we get a whole week to complete. But 12 people failed this summer so be careful.
very hard in grading. he does not appreciate the seeing big picture, need to put so much details. I do not agree what he was saying" such as military regimes in Latin Americas have no interests in politics". of course they do for their own purposes. some of Latin American countries became under the hardest military dictators, power hungers...
This is the worst online class I have ever taken. The teacher is not involved whatsoever. The TA's run the course. The grading is VERY difficult. Very high expectations for an intro course. I work my butt off for all classes, but this is ridiculous. You can try your best and hope for a B...AVOID
The biggest problem with him is grading...very hard. Second problem: he asks questions which are not from the text book, so attending class is essential though he does not say in his syllabus; Third problem: Teaching is just okay. Nothing special. He could have been better. I will give him D- for his teaching.
This prof is the worst teacher ever, worst class ever, if you want to ruin your academic career take him, otherwise avoid. His class average was an F. He is a hard grader, but he doesn't teach his class in a way that is clear. He basically lectures to hear himself speak. AVOID.
Easy intro course, as long as you do the readings. Lectures can be quite boring though.
Great Prof. Helpful and friendly. TA is a difficult grader and is somewhat inconsistent, taking away points from some and giving them to others for the same thing. Classes are helpful and engaging; refers to real-world events all the time.
One word-horrible.
Great prof! Not a very interesting course but he made it as lively as possible. He was extremely helpful and if you put the time and effort in you would get a good mark.
Online course, human rights. Moderately difficult, but well-designed course. TA's are tough graders on discussion board (30% of grade), but prompt and friendly in responding to questions. Quizzes are easy. Final was tough, but fair. Participate often, and get good grades.
took the online class, extremely useless teacher, does not give any indications for final exam. Very arrogant with students.. i would strongly recommend staying away from any class taught by him
The TA's run the show for this class, he was almost not involved at all. TA's were very inconsistent markers, especially regarding the weekly postings, though they are friendly when students asked questions. Final exam is not all that hard, though it's not easy either
The most arrogant instructor I've seen at Concordia.
very unclear on how material is graded. It is Useless to inquire about a grade. He and the TA's are not helpful. I would not recomend this course.
Best class I had all semester, he is AMZiNG knowledgable so don't open your mouth if you don't have facts, I LOVED his lectures I only missed once cause I was really sick other than that best prof ever you will really learn! Hard marker but you will learn!
Hands down the worst course I have taken. This prof never interacted with us, TAs were strangely critical in their grading i.e. I would barely get a passing grade for a weekly discussion question and when I would ask them about it, they would be very unhelpful. Qs on assignments and tests were so vague that I had no idea how to answer them. Avoid.
Horrible online class. TAs graded far too harshly and gave unhelpful feedback. No study guide for the exam (always have had one for an online class) meaning you're left on your own to go over 200+ pages. Teacher doesn't even record lectures and the class is based on an outdated book with some paragraphs omitted and unhelpfully posted on slides.
I recommend poli 214, it was a very interesting course. However, you need to keep on with the readings, and do all the discussion boards in order to avoid getting a bad grade !
This is by far the worst class I have ever taken. The book is outdated by several years! I have taken other online courses where the teacher actually makes an effort to lecture. This class is terrible. The weekly lessons are just cut and pasted from the book. TA sucks, very random marking system and no feedback. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS CLASS
Im currently taking this class and i am dying. every single week you have to read about 30 pages and thats only one lesson! sometimes you have 2 lessons in a week plus 2 discussion questions for each chapter! The teacher provides no explanation, he wrote the book so thats all he wants you to go by! I'm about to do the final and no direction is give
WORSE CLASS EVER!!! stay away! no instructions for the final, class notes are copy pasted from the textbook and grading way too harsh, with no helpful comments. do not take this course
Horrible. Thinks he is teaching students that are masters in politics even if you have no background. Has nothing to do with students and depends on his T.A's that are extremely hard markers. Too much reading, and too little info on what you really need to memorize for the tests and the final! Don't be fooled! Don't take his classes. (A+ student)
By far worst class and grade of my undergrad. Don't bother AT ALL! Simply horrible teacher that grades way too hard and does not pin point what you really need to know. TOO much reading. Expects you to memorize all in detail... horrible T.A's that are probably also told to be picky with fine details. Stay away!
Worst class and prof at concordia by far! He should stop teaching all together. no more comments
Worst course EVER! T.A's just copy paste answers that don't even make sense when you get something "wrong". The profs lectures were so short I wondered why he even made videos. You basically just read A LOT of material and expect to memorize everything in detail, makes no sense! Our class average was a C-.1 person got an A-, is that even pssible!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. This prof and his courses make concordia look bad. If you dare to take this course, you will either have a heart attack for having your gpa drop, or go crazy after not knowing what you should really know and experience the utterly most abnormal grading style.
Most arrogant/careless instructor I've seen at Concordia.
This is the WORST COURSE I have EVER taken. No feedback, no help from TA or prof, you're just left to figure it out. Assignments are graded weeks after they're submitted with vague notes and no explanation for your grade. I am currently on day 1/3 for the final and people are asking when it is due/what is the word limit. No info for ANYTHING
Nothing I can add that hasn't been mentioned by my peers. Avoid at all costs.
This guy is straightforward, you need to go to class, do the readings and do your work on time and you will get an A. Midterm and exam will focus on the book so read your chapters and highlight important sections, it will be useful later, trust me. Paper is a bit long for a 300 class but he is a fair marker who keeps most grades in the B+ range
how can i describe about dr mayer, one of the worst prof that concordia has perhaps. lectures are long unnecessarily. he is way too full of himself. your papers exams mostly corrected by TA that he heavily relies on!if you need help from him good luck! lectures r good but way too long. Avoid this teacher!
it is too bad that all these reviews are from his online class, because in class he is very clear, and readings are straightforward. he gives good feedback and encourages class participation to make sure you understand the material. Very clear structure of the class and what he expects. Class attendance is necessary as he will expand the material.
In-respectful, very arrogant ... strongly recommend staying away from Gives bad reputation to Concordia, don't understand how he is a professor and was a program director!
Okay - I guess the people who took the 200 level course had a bad time of it, but Jean-François Mayer was dynamite in Politics of Latin America. He has a great teaching personality and amazing story-telling skills. He knows the grand arcs of Latin American history as well as the fine details. I recommend him highly!
Teacher is extremely straight forward and so is the material. I attended 4 classes in total and read the textbook instead and ended up with an A-. If you know the material and regurgitate it in his tests, you'll be fine.
Professor Mayer is a great insightful teacher. His courses are clearly constructs and he gives interesting lectures. In class midterm and take-home final exam. Requires you to complete lecture notes with readings to get an A+.
Man, I wish I had read these comments before I signed up for this course with this teacher and TAs. It's like they have not changed a single thing since these other poor people took this course. Same feedback from me: worst class I've ever taken because of arbitrary grading, snarky prof and TAs, and unavailability of TAs and professor. Avoid.
Do your readings, go to class, good teacher.
He is very knowledgeable in the class material. He doesn't use a powerpoint, so go to class and listen to what he has to say. The book is very helpful, but sums up what he lectures pretty much. He really helps you if you go see him in his office hours, because the TA is confusing and useless in helping you.
enjoyed the class
This prof is arrogant and dialogue and real analysis are not welcome in his class. It feels as though he's trying to be tough to be respected, maybe this is related to his youth?
Prof. Mayer is one of the most knowledgeable teachers I've ever had. He knows his stuff and gets into some really interesting debates in class, always willing to debate. Definitely willing to help out with anything and great during office hours. In the upper level classes you need to do readings but he's Easily the best teacher I've ever had
Professor Mayer is an incredible teacher. He's very passionate and knowledgable and really cares about his students. You HAVEA to work for it though. The readings are hard and there's lots of writing involved (1,200 word outline + 2,500 word critical paper + 4,000 word final paper), but if you like the topic it's worth it. Loved him!
Lectures are a repetition of material covered in reading- lazy prof work. Tries to do the least work possible and gives himself an image of very intellectual man-clearly not. Good luck if you have him.
He talks too fast sometimes, but he is always on topic and he enjoys the topic, you can see it. He is also very knowledgeable, and he makes the lectures by the book so it's always on the ball. Very nice guy, however he and his TA grade very tough, so be careful with how much you write or how little you don't. Very hard to get more than a B-B+
Great professor! Overall you need to work to get a good grade. Attend class and you will do fine. The take home final was time consuming, so give yourself enough time to complete it.
Great prof. He is passionate about the material and clearly explains it. Would definitely have taken him again if it wasn't my last year.
Horrible. His recorded lectures are a waste of time- he just reads the textbook super slowly its like an awful audiobook except this audiobook cost you $1000. Expectations are wildly unclear and inconsistent. TA did not actually read my papers, just enjoyed leaving comments loaded with political jargon instead of helpful or relevant feedback.
Prof. Mayer is clearly passionate about the topic. However, his expectations for the class are not clear and he is not helpful outside class. Every time I asked him for help outside class he would not fully answer my questions. The feedback I got from him was not helpful, he is vague in the way he corrects and his comments are confusing.
He is kind and extremely passionate & knowledgeable about the topic. The weekly seminars are interesting but he requires participation. Also, he is unclear with the assignments, he is hard to get ahold of, very vague in his answers, doesn't give constructive criticism. Leaves you not understanding what went wrong or what is expected. Confusing.
Professor Mayer Is a great professor, you have to put the work, you have to do readings and come prepare to class, you have to go see him during his office hours to clarify any confusion. if you dont participate, dont consult him before writing any paper, you would not have a good grade. Put the work, come prepare and you will get a good grade
Super nice guy. Well adjusted to the online format. Normal reading load for a 400 level class (if a bit heavy), but they were interesting for the most part, as were the class discussions based on those readings. Moreover, he does a great job at leading the class discussions, while also not making anyone feel overly pressured to speak.
The class material was okay and not too arduous. He explains concepts well. TA Morales was quite the harsh grader and would take points off your grades for things that we were not asked to do. The instructions on assignments were often unclear and vague. Overall, good teacher, just make sure you read and you get clarifications on assignments.
Dr Mayer is a great prof, I've already taken two classes with him and have enjoyed them a lot. There is a lot of reading, but the readings are interesting and the discussions are great. If you put in the work you'll do well. He is super friendly and helpful
Professor Mayer is great teacher an academic. He is really passionate about Latin America and knows it greatly. I recommend his class if you want to learn about Latin American politics and as a region. He is really caring and answers emails as soon as possible, something that surprised me.
He makes his subject very interesting!
Very interesting and well-driven lectures! Loved having him as a professor!
Easy to get a good grade: Just focus in class and skim through the mandatory textbook. The professor emphasizes on encouraging students to look at the big picture, which means lecture notes are easy to digest and remember. 3000 word essay for the only assignment, a 2 essay midterm and a 3 essay final.
Professor Mayer makes the material engaging and encourages critical thinking. While the workload is manageable, attending class and doing the readings are key. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep alongside the textbook.
Awesome teacher !! Explains very thoroughly!
I really liked him, I found his class very engaging and he helped a lot outside of class with clarity on what he is looking for. I feel if you seek out his help you will do very well. He's not a pushover, you will have to try for sure, but he does not expect anything insane of students, and he explains his concepts well.
