Knows his material inside out and is one of my best. Not at all for lamers who sit and make noise and fail the course at the year end.
This guy is as smart as his best friend "Cauchy", he could have as well taught the course in french..dare you not to sleep..

Dr. Gabardo is an okay professor. He is quite boring and somewhat unclear but his tests are rather easy.
Mumbles in class sometimes and can be uninteresting. Clearly knows the material though and if you see him outside of class he is very willing to help. Held an extra last-minute study session for us that was *very* useful.

His accent may be hard to understand (for those who didn't have french in school). His grammar is fine though, and he understands you fine.
His notes are good, but he won't keep your attention long. Write it down, learn it later was my motto for getting through his course.
professor gabardo needs to engage the class and actually pretend to care about teaching the subject to all students. even if he despises the incompetent ones.

Awful, couldn't teach me how to tie my shoe laces even though I already know how. Think I am joking, he lecturing us about conservation of energy a topic we learned in physics class a few weeks earlier and I didn't understand a thing he was saying. I got an 11 in that physics class.

On both midterms he made the test out of 40 instead of 50 when the class average was poor (50ish), and made the exam worth 80% instead of 60% to help those who didn't do as well on the tests (me). I went into the exam with a 64, but aced it and finished with above 90. He is a bit detached and dry in class, but is willing to help.
LETHAL PROF. Extremely hard. But very very helpful in his office hours. His tests and finals make sure the electrical and eng phys enigneers know inside out what the content is. fail rate quite high for a math course. Nice guy though. makes sure mcmaster has good quality engineers graduating.
I thought this prof was very fair, and understanding. Even though his lectures were really boring, the weekly assignments weren't too bad, and the tests were very fair. His sample tests really helped to prepare.
Horrible professor. Is extremely unapproachable and when attending office hours, he is rude. He doesnt talk to students while lecturing, since he talks tot he chalkboard. Really hard tests and people were just flipping pages durring the exam. Unreasonable in every way.

I will admit his tests are impossible to do, and his lectures are pretty much useless. But he is willing to help if you go to his office hours. At least he's fair in the exam marking and bell curving the marks.
He made all of his tests and exams impossibly hard. He had to bell curve each test at least 15% in order for enough people to pass the course. The material in the textbook was doable, his tests were not.

very annoying mumbler, bad handwriting, unprepared, struggles and fails on own examples, tries to solve things in his head, makes many mistakes and needs correcting all the time. gets puzzled look when asked question, cannot answer anything. tests did not relate to covered material or test samples. had to adjust grades each time (40% on summer!)

His test is extrmely hard compare to his examples. His lecture is not bad, but he's really helpful in his office hour. His explaination is not bad needs to solve several questions to understand correctly. I usually attended to lecture excpet two or three. He needs to use more textbook. correction
Tests are a poor reflection of what you know in the course. More of a test on how well you can manage time. Don't waste any with questions that don't work out. > 60% of the people will not have enough time to finish all questions on both term tests. Due to teaching style - This is a textbook course, you have been warned
Useless prof. Had to learn the entire course on my own from the textbook. Lectures were useless so don't bother going. Tests are horribly unfair and often contain questions never seen in lecture or in the textbook or on the assignments. Exam was absolutely insane. Destroyed everyone. No chance at all. Still passed the course but very frustrating.

Great professor. Helpful in office hours, and in lecture. His tests are difficult but if you do your assignments, study your lecture notes and read the textbook, there is nothing really surprising and you should do fine.
I stopped attending Gabardo's class after about the third week, and started attending a different professors class instead. Gabardo reads theorys, proofs and examples (in that order) directly from the textbook, without explaining the concepts or general knowledge behind each of them.I found I learned more by spending the same time reading on my own
Not willing to help, rude attitude during office hours. Tutorial given by TA is more helpful than his lectures.
I don't know how he's a professor honestly. He reads and writes directly from textbook. Useless , khanacademy and textbook are your bestfriends in his class.
Absolutely brutal. Teaches the board directly from the textbook. Will look at the class at most once per lecture. No remorse for having a 45% average on both midterms, doesn't care for his students. No passion, no compassion, heartless.
Abysmal explanation of course material. He took his time writing definitions, derivations, and proofs on the board but rushed through examples with his back to the class. Tests were extreme versions of the rushed examples. He didn't understand why we wanted him to slow down. Find another resource. He did give alternate marking schemes to help us.
Absolutely terrible professor. Mumbles into the board, has terrible handwriting. Doesn't care about his students at all, doesn't answer questions. Tests are super hard. Honestly shouldn't teach at all, absolutely no drive to actually help students understand anything.
Tests too long for the time allotted. Felt like I was going to fail, and had a failing grade until the exam and then ended up with a C+. My last theoretical math course of my university career. Thank God its over. Phewww.
Absolutely ridiculous teacher. Cannot teach at all yet was put in charge of this course. Gives test where there are formulas required (and attached on a formula sheet) then doesn't base any questions on the formulas. Bases tests on only the difficult parts of material. First test I had the first half of the material learned was not even there. BAD
You are assigned a ridiculous amount of homework and extremely tedious online assignments that chip away far too much time for content that never makes it to the test. This class is information heavy, very stressful, and his lectures are sloppy.
One of the sloppiest professor I have ever had the misfortune of being taught under. Doesmt explain anything, completely ignores any questions people have in the chat section on zoom, doesnt make any sense 90% of the time. Horrible prof.
terrible handwriting in lecture notes, unclear pronunciation in class, too much complicated calculation in tests and do not give enough time to complete, never give us sample tests or practice problems to do before each test.
Guy fails a majority of the class because he makes us do a test with 3.75 minutes per question. He claims it was "probably" too long. Then he only lets us redo half the test like hes being nice. Hes a martian from outer space.

It is necessary for me to rate him at the lowest mark (0 out of 5), I do not understand how can he become a university professor. He can keep writing notes and do not explain the reason of any key points in class. All of his handwriting notes look like messy, and his accent makes me feel disgusted.
Doesn't listen to students' concerns (during a pandemic). Messy, hard to understand notes as well. You're basically teaching yourself from the textbook. Better off taking this course another term.

This is not nice at all, just done his final exam, nothing related to practice he gave us, test and exam were SO HARD, midterm 1's average was 38, no partial mark, if you get your final answer wrong, it is 0, even though 90% of your work are right.

The professor has never given practice or past test before the exam. There are three tests in total, and none of the questions can be finished. The average score of the first mid-term exam was 30. He did not marked the process but only looked at the results, but we were asked to upload all the process, as long as the answer is wrong you'll get ZERO
His tests were so unfair and impossible to finish. With online school he made it so only your final answer was marked and when his tests are ridiculously long and with only your final answer marked for lengthy problems you are being set up to fail:(

Do Not Take His Course!!!! Horrible handwriting and useless lectures. Extremely massive homework for only tiny bit maks. Ridiculous calculation but he is not allowed you to use calculator, and only the final answer will be graded.

Don't ever take his courses. Failed this course the first time I had him for this course before. Didn't realize he could get worse, long exams, your notes won't be worth anything even if you're almost correct. He doesn't care about students, won't respond to emails. I'm confused about how they let this man teach anything, he is clearly braindead.

He makes very hard tests, and use easy assignments to mislead you. NEVER TAKE HIS COURSE!
He usually makes the first term test very hard, but do not be afraid, because that is the only test for the whole term to frigthen you and so you would study harder. Later he would make simpler tests to save your live, and you get better by the first-test stimulus and because you study harder.
Probably the hardest test writer I've ever experienced. Avoid his classes. He was also probably one of the worst professors in terms of teaching ability that I've ever had.
Stay away from his courses, do everything possible to not land in his classes.

Took his course 7 years ago. With a high degree of confidence, I can say that he's one of the worst professors I've ever, ever had.
Gabardo didnt lecture me for 2z0, but he sure as hell made my tests. Those test were abysmal, they were so hard, so incredibly difficult and overcomplicated. Ive heard that he gets mad if you ask him questions, and can be pretty passive aggressive too!

I don't know why his rating is so low. His lectures are clear & helpful. The course is very structured & information is readily accessible. People rating him so low have never acc experienced a bad prof. His tests are pretty hard. If you do all the practice tests/homework given & understand what is happening getting a 10 + should be easy.
Lectures by Gabardo were lazier, less informative, organized, and useful of the two instructors (despite being the head instructor), he made ridiculous weekly assignments worth 1.5% each (for total only 15%). If you got the class average on every midterm and exam you have a failing grade. You'd need to get over 55% on the assignments just to PASS.
I found Dr.Gabardo very difficult to learn from and the lectures to be incomprehensible without reading the textbook/watching YouTube videos prior. I definitely taught myself the majority of the course material. The actual content of the course is really fascinating and useful, but the delivery wasn't great.
I saw Gabardo's really low rating and thought "I'm sure he's not that bad." I stand corrected. He doesn't know how to teach; his lectures are over-complicated, he's hard to understand, and his notes are illegible. I taught myself ENTIRELY from the textbook (which doesn't work well). I had to get my friend's prof's notes (which were 10x better).
Beginning of the semester I would have given him a terrible rating, mostly because of his accent. I will admit, he tends to overcomplicate ideas and he's not the best at explaining processes, I did have to go over some concepts myself to understand them. But he's not too bad once you get past the accent. I found his lectures did actually help.
Worst prof ever. His accent was endearing, but oh my god his lectures. People would ask questions and he would overcomplicate EVERYTHING. Simple concepts become insanely hard. The organic chemistry tutor carried me this semester. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! If you have to take him, just skip lectures and teach yourself, it's a better use of time.
Not too bad tbh I think he could talk a bit louder and clearer during lectures. This probably isn't the consensus but his teaching style worked for me, just make sure you come to lectures after taking a peek at the textbook to get the basics down. I sucked at calc in hs so I was surprised by how much I learned and how well I did.
Not only was jp a great teacher, but a better man. Although his French accent made him hard to understand, his spirited baguette nature more then made up for his lack of annunciation. He is a lovely man in a sea of despicable professors at McMaster. Maybe the very best the school offers.
Going into this course after reading these reviews I was ready for the worst. But I can say after finishing Math 1A03 with him as my professor, the only negative thing I can say is that his french accent took a while to get used to. Everything else, practice questions, practice tests, his jokes and leniency for grading, made it a enjoyable course.

The professor's French accent took some getting used to, but his engaging teaching style and willingness to help made up for it. Utilizing the textbook and unstuck study for extra practice proved crucial. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding course.
Took this course in 1st year, a great professor, after finishing his course I decided to switch to a math major instead of chem. I was looking to see what courses he taught to take next year and found out he passed unfortunately RIP Dr. Gabardo
