I really loved Jean. She didn't do much lecturing or demonstrations, but I liked her style of letting us do our own thing. She'll give you good feedback and will help with anything. I'm surprised how much my drawing skills improved. Plus she's Scottish, so she has a sweet accent!
I really lovee this class! Her teaching style is generally to just throw you in the water, then teach you how to swim afterwards but it is really helpful. I love that she gives us individual critiques on all of our work, and she gives you the chance to rework your pieces after you get a grade on a project.
So I learned a lot in Jean's class, but it was ridiculously hard and a TON of work. Unless you're amazing already, there's no way you're going to get a good grade in her class. Assignments are vague and so are her critiques. I don't recommend her.
You need a STRONG foundation in analytical drawing to take this class. She grades very harshly. 75% of the projects are drawing faces in different mediums. Projects come in bursts, nothing for 2 weeks, then literally 8 projects in one week. She doesn't teach, just critiques. The vagueness of her critiques leaves students with no idea how to improve
Very vague, doesn't teach you anything. She won't even show you her art work. I think she missed the memo that teachers grade on how well you apply what you learn in class. But don't be surprised when she says stuff like I only give an A's if the work if perfect but you can't have perfect art in college. Really bad teaching skills.
I took her watercoloring class over the summer and she was not laid back at all. She told our class all the time that we were boring and if she doesnt like your art then you dont get a good grade. She does not respond to emails and you can never get 100% on anything because she is a perfectionist. She maybe did one demonstration on how to paint.
Jean was a good teacher. She knows what she's doing. I didn't necessarily like her approach of just giving you an assignment and expecting you to learn as you go, but I definitely learned from it. There was a lot of work, but not unbearable. Otherwise, Jean is really nice and she's a great person to know.
There's a lot of negative reviews on here, but I see no need to be scared away. Jean is really fun to be in class with! Sometimes it's really unclear on what she expects out of assignments and when due dates will be which gets frustrating. Grading seemed perfectly normal. Compared to my 114 not too horribly time consuming. (But still tons of work!)
Amazing Scottish accent. Likes to chat with the students while working, nice person. Not an easy grader, but gives you opportunities to turn in late, 10 points of extra credit, and 3 reworks. Sometimes projects pile up but she is flexible if everyone's panicking. Gives helpful feedback. Required to do a lot of large work and buy paper often.
Jean is a great professor! She is hilarious and made class very enjoyable. You don't get an easy A in this class, but she does grade fairly. All of the assignments are out of 10 points. If you do really well, you can get 9.810. She rarely gives 1010. It is possible to get an A if you turn in your assignments on time and do your best.
Jean is awesome. It is a work-intensive class though. I put a lot of hours into what I was doing. There is some instruction when starting a new project (aka. how to do perspective, or playing with charcoal). But once you start a project if you want feedback, ask for it.
Jean is super fun and provides great critiques to help students improve their work, no matter the medium. Participation is everything. Like any art class, it requires a lot of work on the student's part, but she doesn't favor one student's drawing ability over the other. She provides constructive criticism to help students improve.
She was willing to change due dates if needed.
She was good at changing due dates if needed, but the majority of the class needed to need that extra time.
Jean is a great teacher and works with you. She makes you work for it and you spend a lot of time out of class working on projects, but you feel good about what you have done. The class is expensive with all the supplies you have to get, so beware of that. I would definitely recommend the class though, and I wouldn't take it from any other teacher.
Jean is a great teacher. Variety of assignments that make you work outside your normal comfort zone! She helps you push yourself to do better than you want to. She's really understanding and wants you to succeed. I would definitely take her class again! Just be prepared to actually do work outside of class, or you won't pass. Also contact if absent
About one assignment a week (one big piece, or three smaller pieces). Plenty of helpful feedback during class time. Good creative assignments that allow for plenty of personal influence and style choices.
Great teacher, not a lot of instruction mostly just time to oil paint. So if you have zero painting or drawing background maybe take a different class first, then this class. Super cool though and also she has a Scottish accent, which of course it pretty awesome.
Jean does a great job introducing drawing techniques. There is a good variety of differing assignments, and her class has a fun, friendly vibe. I'd highly recommend her! I'm glad I took this class to fulfill my general art credit.
Jean is so great! She is fair and is willing to work with you, while also giving good suggestions to help you improve (if you want to). I'm not an art major but I learned a lot from her and felt like I could be creative. She gives a lot of opportunities to get extra credit and to rework assignments so it's not hard to get a good grade.
Jean is the greatest! You can take her non-major classes at any level and she is willing to help you wherever you are. Make sure you get her talking about Scotland and the 4 hour classes will fly by! Be prepared to do a lot of assignments, however, she will collaborate with the class on due dates.
Jean is a great teacher and she creates a fun class environment. Her instructions can be confusing but you just need to ask her to clarify. I would recommend this professor.
She's awesome. This class is what got me through the semester and had me looking forward to going to school. She is super helpful and cares about your artwork and helping you get better. plus she's freakin hilarious
Jean is a fun teacher who does a great job of explaining the requirements, however the class is not an easy A. Be prepared for lots of work. If you like art you'll love the class, however for any students taking the class for the credit beware its not an easy class.
I love her! She is an amazing teacher and helps you actually learn how to do techniques without being too hard on yourself. She is hilarious! I recommend this class to anyone!
Jean is a great teacher, patient in explaining, encouraging, funny as she chatting with us while doing art. If you do the work and participate in this class, you'll do well.
She was a great teacher and was very personable. I felt like she was very fair when it came to grading. Lots of fun! Created a good learning environment.
I wish she would have gotten grades in sooner, but overall she is an entertaining teacher.
Jean was a great teacher. She gave fabulous feedback and helped me improve. I would take another class from her any day!
Jean is a fun teacher. She engages in fun conversation and has this really really awesome accent because she's from Scotland (I think?). Anyways, she's a pretty chill teacher, she's seems lenient with assignments because she lets us have re-works. She offers extra credit and is willing to work with you. Really awesome teacher, would recommend her:)
Jean is so funny! She's very real and is open to talk about anything. The hardest thing about this class is the major amount of time it takes. She expects you to spend ten hours per project. We had to do twenty hours of art in a week and the next week, fifteen hours. It was a lot more work than I expected. I learned a lot, but it was a time suck.
One of the nicest professor I have had at BYU, there is a lot of work but if you keep up, you'll do fine. She lets you do reworks. At the end of the semester there are 3 big projects and two papers along the way. Take ART 101 from her. She is great.
Jean is a great teacher! If you're considering taking a class from her, be sure to plan on spending at least a few hours a week outside of class working on assignments. There are a lot of mulit-week projects and outside of class assignments. Don't let all your work pile up a the end of the semester, otherwise you won't have time to do it all.
Jean has been one of the more considerate teachers I have had. She has been helpful through the assignments. Be prepared to put in the work. Jean will help you get a love for Art. I have no talent when it comes to drawing but I realized I could put what I love into the work. Take it from her!
She is a funny teacher, I enjoyed the class. The only difficult thing was that at least half of the assignments were due the last month of the semester. A lot of time needs to be put into homework (10+ hours a week).
She is a great teacher and is always willing to give you advice. I didn't love all the projects we had to do, but they encouraged me to reach outside my regular scope. I learned new techniques and challenged myself in bigger ways. She's super great and awesome too. Allowed 3 reworks which is awesome. Definitely would recommend and take again.
I'm a non-art major, and I had a lot of fun in this class (watercolor). Jean often tells fun stories while we work, and she creates a relaxed environment for her students. She has not been overly-critical to anyone in our class, and she is patient with students who are struggling.
Jean is an awesome art teacher! I came into this class knowing very little about drawing and she helped me improve quite a bit. Grading is mostly based off of effort and improvement so it's fair for everyone.
Jean was great. You have several drawing assignments throughout the semester, but she is very happy to work with you and help you get the best grade. She is so funny to talk with and an enjoyable teacher. Her expectations might be a little high for a non-major class but she gives you lots of opportunities to do well.
She is a great professor. I took the drawing for non-major, and I am in love with drawing right now. She is really kind and care. The class is fun; I learned a lot of new stuff about drawing. Recommended.
I took the Water-color class. She is awesome and class was fun to go to. This is a great class to take if you have a little bit of drawing skills and/or art talent. She will give you lots of time to work and if you ask for her help she will give you lots of feedback.
Her class is very fun! If you do your homework, then you will get point.
Jean's class is super fun and she's funny. She connects really well with the students and is on your side. Make sure you put in the work on the projects because theres not a whole lot that goes in to the grade book, so do well on what you have. I would have liked to receive more instruction on techniques, but what was received was sufficient.
I live in Provo, and took this as a once a week class up at the BYU Salt Lake Center. I loved it! We had a number of projects and I felt like my ability to watercolor really improved. Jean was fun to talk to during class, and I always had a good time. She explained our assignments in class, so going to class was really helpful. We had work days too
Jean is an awesome teacher. She is happy to answer any questions you might have and is very kind when giving an answer. She is also very good at giving feedback and allows you to redo assignments as needed
Jean really pushed me as I struggled with water coloring, and I found myself loving the class. She gives excellent feedback, shes accessible during class and answers any question, and she genuinely cares about your work and your progress. She really is amazing, and every week had us laughing in our seats while we painted away!
Jean was a great instructor! She was really fun to work with, and our class got really close with her. She expects a lot from her students, but she is also very understanding and willing to work with you under extenuating circumstances. It is a lot of work, but totally worth it.
Jean was a great teacher who I would take art from again. She was a tough grader, but gave opportunities to bolster your grade for a project by doing reworks on them. Gave feedback and helped you become a better artist.
Jean was great! I took watercolor from her. I never felt like she was comparing my artwork to others either, which was nice. If you want a good grade on an assignment, ask her what you could work on before you turn it in. Otherwise, you'll get points docked and not know why.
Helps when needed, learn by doing, critiques are always fun to discuss!
I started this class unsure if it would be a good choice for me since I've never been interested in art but after time I discovered it was pretty entertaining and it changed my point of view about art and expanded my vision about how hard and easy it is to do art.
Jean is such an awesome teacher! I took this class with hardly any art background at all, but Jean helped me feel capable and encouraged. I really enjoyed learning some of the basic concepts about watercolor as well as stretching myself and doing assignements and paintings that were out of my comfort zone. Shes also super funny! Love this class.
Jean is awesome. She is very willing to work with you one on one and is super understanding that this class is for non-majors. She asks you to do research each week and daily drawings, but this class is super manageable. I would 100% take this class again.
Jean is a really funny and helpful teacher. However, do not take this class unless you are prepared to spend 10 or more hours on it each week during the second half of the semester! I had to spend more time doing hw for this class than all of my other classes combined, and I was taking 16 credits. I learned a lot but it was so demanding! Be warned!
Jean is a fun teacher, I just wish she had more clear structure to her class. It seems like she teaches more after you've turned your project in rather than while you're in the middle of it and can actually fix it. Maybe people appreciate that aspect of her class, but I like to turn in a finished product.
Great instructor! Really relaxed and willing to help with any questions you may have. Gives great feedback and is very encouraging with your artwork. Lets you do reworks if need be and helps you through what needs to be done. Awesome professor!
SLC- It's a beginners art class, but if you don't have any prior experience with watercolor or art then you might struggle at first, since Jean takes a "learn by practice" approach. That being said, she gives really great feedback and lets you redo projects for full credit and I think this teaching method works great once you adjust to it.
Jean is such a fun teacher. Going to class is enjoyable and she gives you plenty of time to work in class on the projects, however, I still spent a considerable amount of time out of class as well. She is willing to answer questions, re-explain painting methods, and share her supplies. I wish the assignments were described more clearly.
Jean is a great teacher, she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. The projects are time-intensive but plan ahead and you'll be fine. She is flexible if you have something come up like illness or travel. She also offers extra credit for attending art shows.
Jean is fun and helpful. But her expectations are understated, there's a 25 hour final project and research throughout the course. I wish assignments were explained more clearly. Look at LearningSuite so things don't surprise you, especially the 25 hour final project.
Jean is a great professor! She gives some specific guidelines or techniques for the projects but really lets each individual student do what they want within the broad parameters. It is a lot of work if you let projects build up so use your time wisely. She lets you redo 3 projects throughout the semester on anything you were unhappy with.
Jean is a great teacher and wonderful person! If you want to jump right into watercolor this is a great class. You get the chance to practice different types of paintings like portraits, still lifes (lives? Life's?) etc. Be aware that this WILL take a good chunck of out-of-class time though. But painting is relaxing.
She is a great teacher.
Good teacher, with a clear understanding of the course she was teaching. Overall enjoyed the class.
Took her Watercolor for Non-Majors class. Excellent experience, and i got to make a lot of artwork even for just a term. We only met twice a week and there was one where I couldn't attend, I emailed her and she was very understanding and helped me not fall behind. Her class feels very relaxed but well organized.
Jean is a great professor! I really enjoyed her class. Prepare to spend lots of time outside of class on your projects.
Jean is a great professor and really enjoyable to listen to in class. She has inspired me to pursue more in art and to get outside of my comfort zone to find what I love. I would really recommend her.
Jean is amazing! Be prepared to work hard in that class though. She gives a lot of projects, along with drawings a day that you're expected to do. Jean is really funny and kind though, also has a very entertaining Scottish accent
Sister Richardson is a very likable teacher. If you are looking for someone to teach technique or demonstrate how to do the project, she is very unclear. Be prepared to do a lot of painting outside of class. I did enjoy the class and the opportunity to try something new.
Jean is a wonderful teacher and has a lot of passion for art. I really enjoyed the opportunities her class gave us to experience art through many different mediums. Get ready to work for it, because she makes you earn your grade. There is a lot of "in class" and "at home" assignments to help you become proficient at the different techniques.
I took art 101 at BYU SLC. She was flexible and knowledgeable enough to get behind each students artistic vision. The only thing I might say would be that you had to kinda figure out how her assignments worked. As in, she would have projects overlap and you could get confused about when what project was due. Otherwise she's awesome and fun!!
She is a great professor to learn watercolor from. Her class is very laid and fun. I miss it already. My only advice is to stay on top of your assignments because it is easy to fall behind. That being said, she does allow for a few late submissions.
Professor Jean is a fun art teacher. It would have been nice to have more in-class assignments, like heres an apple draw it and less of here is technics others do now you go on your own. It is also expensive since you have to buy a lot of art supplies and use it maybe two times. She is very funny and expects a lot from her students.
Jean has been wonderful! I took her intro to watercolor class and loved it. Attendance is definitely mandatory, but if you go you will be just fine. And class time is really just set apart time to work on your projects with help there if you need it. She is fun, kind, and her highest priority is to help you learn and progress.
Love Jean! She is super easy to work with. She knows her stuff and gives great feedback. I would highly recommend taking a class from her. Attendance is super important to her!
I LOVED Jean! She is a real gem. She is so helpful when you have questions or you feel lost. She answers quickly to email or messages from students and does everything in her power to make sure you do well in the class. I learned so much about watercolor now! It was so fun that I have willingly continued outside of class.
Jean Richardson is great! She is really funny and her class is super chill. The class is not lecture based and she is super willing to help you with anything. If you take her class you will have stuff to do at home, but it is super manageable as long as you stay on her "suggested schedule". I highly recommend her!
Jean is a super sweet person. I feel like a lot of the learning was up to me. She's more of a hands off teacher, so you kind of have to figure things out on your own. Fun class to take with a friend.
Jean is a FABULOUS professor. She is really fun and engaging and makes art accessible to everyone. I would not have considered myself an artist before taking her class but I have learned so much and I have made a lot of pieces I am really happy with. Take her class!
She is really good at giving feedback/ help but you can't be afraid to ask. A lot of the assignments are "open to interpretation" which scared me at first but it really helped me grow as an artist! Its an easy A if you do your genuine best and keep up with sketchbook assignments.
A really caring professor who wants you to do well.
Professor Richardson is a great teacher and I wouldn't have wanted to learn water coloring from anyone else! She is very flexible about deadlines and she always allows you to improve your work for a better grade.
Class critiques are great; you get to hear classmates weigh in on your work. Very beginner-friendly; you will not be judged for your elementary level doodles as long as you tried! Jean moves pretty fast, so you'll probably need to ask lots of questions.
Jean Richardson is a lovely professor--this class had a lot to do, but she was very helpful and made it enjoyable. Sometimes a little disorganized, but makes up for it by being flexible and easy to work with.
She gives good feedback when you ask for it. Take notes of her instructions. She is lenient with late work but you still need to stay on top of projects and other homework or you still won't make it.
I love Jean, she was super warm and charismatic and you can tell that she cares a lot about her students and the class! She organizes the work so that when you turn in assignments, if they aren't finished you can resubmit them by the final for full credit. I liked this at first, but eventually it stacked up and was nearly impossible to finish.
Jean was wonderful. She is a great teacher and is willing to work with you and to help you succeed. I really appreciated her class, and I knew she would be willing to help if I needed it. You get out of this class what you put in .
Professor Richardson is a really nice teacher and cares for all of her students. She wants everyone to become the best artist you can be and is always willing to help and give feedback. But, the class was a lot of work the second half of the semester and you will be working on your assignments all the time. So stay on top of all of your assignment
Jean was a good professor. She was nice and very approachable. You could go and ask her questions, but it was hard for me to get the clarification I needed for assignments. I personally struggled with the lack of explanation for the assignments and projects.
She is very caring about you but sometimes that doesn't show. She can be funny at times but don't push your sarcasm too much. She gives good feedback but if you have a question it is hard to ask it with her. Overall, she is a great teacher.
I enjoyed the class, professor Richardson is pretty hands-off which is nice but it is very easy to get behind and be confused about when and what things are due.
Jean is an amazing teacher. She handled the COVID situation so well and was always willing to help us. She gives really good feedback and always tries to focus on the things you did well. She is hilarious and has really unique activities and assignments. I would for sure recommend her class to anyone.
She is a great professor and I thoroughly enjoyed her watercolor class and my skills definitely improved. You need to take notes when she is giving out an assignment and the criteria for it. There is no outline of projects so you have to keep yourself organized. It is a long class but she often let us leave early.
Jean is a great teacher! I loved learning watercolors from her, I have improved a lot. She is willing to give specific feedback, but only if you ask. You will be graded in comparison to your classmates, but she grades mostly on how well you follow the task and use the method that was taught. Long class, but often lets you go early!
Jean was a great professor and anyone wanting to learn new types of art should take this class. I had a great time!
Jean is very talented and always helped me when I asked.
Jean is awesome. She does a great job of helping you improve at the level you are at. She grades mostly on if you follow the criteria and is super helpful if you just ask. She offers extra credit too! You have to spend a decent amount of time outside of class painting, but it was the perfect amount- not too littler or too much.
Jean is amazing! As someone who has never done watercoloring before, the class was a little intimidating. Jean made it totally manageable by starting with easier assignments. She really structures the course well and by the end, I had a pretty good handle on things. Aside from the course, Jean is a great human being and always had me laughing!
This class was always enjoyable to attend. While it took time to finish assignments the grading was not harsh. I had never water colored before and now I feel like I have the knowledge and resources to paint what I want.
I thought I was terrible at art until I took this class. Jean introduces and teaches many different art forms that are really enjoyable! Though some projects took longer than others, she was lenient and understanding of students needing more time when necessary. Any art class will take up a lot of time with the class work, so take it from her!
Very accommodating and just wants to see you succeed by producing the best art you can. If you are at all self conscious about your artistic abilitiy, you can relax around Jean.
She made the class really enjoyable! She just wants to see her students develop their skills from where they are at. Loved being her student this semester!
She is so amazing and caring. She really cares about her students and their abilities to improve. If you need help with a project, she will give you the feedback that you need. She is not too harsh with grading and she is totally understanding of the student's skills.
She's amazing! She's so nice and is willing to work with you, just really be on top of your stuff because once you fall behind it's hard to get back on track.
Dr. Richardson's ART 101 - Intro to Art and Drawing class gives a good overview of drawing media (pens, pencils, charcoals, etc). She creates a supportive and friendly environment (with clearly defined expectations) so that everyone has a chance to learn and grow as part of the class, no matter where they started. Don't slack off on drawings-a-day!
Jean is a very good teacher and cares a lot about the students. She is a very fair grader but there is a tad bit more homework than I initially expected for an art class, however, if you stay on top of it, this class is a good way to relieve from everyday stresses.
My professor was very good at spacing the assignments given and making sure that everyone was given wanted input and help. I would love to take another class from her again.
Jean was by far my favorite professor. You do have to put in many hours into the assignments, but it's very fulfilling to see the finished product. Jean is very caring of her students and makes class fun. She gives great feedback and is very friendly and approachable. I would love to take another one of her classes! Highly recommend:)
Jean gives extremely helpful feedback. She also meets students at their level and help them improve. I saw this in her interactions with me and with other students. I highly recommend her!
Jean is the best! I took her for watercolor and she was an awesome teacher, so fun to talk to, and encouraged us to be creative. Love her! My favorite class for sure!
Even though this is not a class for majors, it doesn't mean it's a beginners level class. It's very fun and you can learn and develop a lot. But you need time to apply to the class. Jean will give extra credit and help, but plan on working hard and spending lots of time outside the classroom working on things.
I loved this class! You don't have to have any art skills to take it, but it definitely helps if you want a good grade (but you can do EC and make ups). Jean is a great teacher who really cares about her students. She's flexible with due dates, but if you get behind it can be stressful to catch up since you are always working on the next project.
Jean is very laid back and will give you a lot of space to figure out how to create something you like. I think I got just enough instruction to get better, but I think that her focus is giving you experience creating art, which takes a lot of time and energy. I spent more time on this class than any other this semester. It was really fun, though!
I loved Professor Richardson! She was so helpful and encouraging. I'm not an artist by any means, but I learned so much in her class and I feel like I have the tools to paint most anything I'd like now. She's very understanding and offers extra credit and the opportunity to rework any project.
She always had something that she could use to help you if you were ever stuck. I personally love painting and so this class was so much fun for me. She really gets to know her students and I loved I could just have a casual conversation with her. I am grateful that she was accommodating to mental/physical illness along with work conflicts.
Very fun and caring in class and often let you retry things for a better grade in class after she gives you good feedback.
Art 101 was a blast! I took it to fulfill a GE requirement and I am NOT ARTISTIC. I expressed this concern to her on the first day of class and she told me that as long as I honestly tried my best on the assignments that I would be just fine. She is very understanding and so helpful. The projects are time consuming so be sure to manage your time!
This class is great even for people who are non-art majors. Professor Richardson is funny and very helpful if you ask for feedback. Try not to get behind in the class because it can be hard to catch up. She is flexible. Definitely would take from her again.
Professor Richardson is a very nice person and encourages trying again on assignments to touch up on some minor errors. I took this class as a GE, and was not expecting the amount of work that she gives. I will warn that it is going to be a lot of time-consuming assignments, but if you are willing to put in effort you will get a good grade.
Jean is awesome! I took this at the Salt Lake Center and it was a blast. If you took time every day to work on projects, the workload wouldn't be terrible, but I ended up working on the projects late into the night before they were due. It was a little unclear what was expected for assignments or the sketchbook at times as well.
Professor Richardson was awesome! My art definitely improved and I learned a lot. She was always ready to give me feedback when I needed it. Absolutely would recommend this class to anyone who's interested in taking it!
Awesome professor! Really cares about your progress as an artist and is very helpful with any questions. This class fun, even if you aren't artistically talented and just need the credits. Workload is a lot at times if you fall behind on projects.
I enjoyed taking this class! She is very accommodating when it comes to the work load. I personally struggled to get some assignments done on time but she assured I would catch up, and I eventually did. The assignments themselves don't require too much time, just have fun and learn as you go (she highly suggested). Overall, great and fun class!
Don't take this class expecting free credit. It is definitely the amount of work you would expect from a 3 credit class. that being said Jean is the sweetest. So willing to work with you, grades very fair. I learned a lot and had a great experience but if for sure kept me a little busier than i was anticipating.
Jean goes above and beyond to create a feeling of friendship and community among class members. She encourages and expects participation. The class was a lot of fun and felt like a safe place to share progress whether you were brand new to drawing or an experienced and capable artist.
She was very caring, and most of all she respected everyone's artistic abilities.
Jean is an awesome professor! I entered this class never having ever picked up a watercolor brush before and now I feel very comfortable and competent with my skills. You need to make sure you stay on top of your assignments and sketch book practice each week or you'll be doing everything during finals week.
Jean was very understanding regarding problems I ran into during the semester. She is very kind and wants to bond with her students. This was my first art class ever, and I do wish that she did more instructing. I learned mostly via videos online. Though her expectations can be unclear, she always welcomes questions.
