Great teacher. There is 2 test and a final exam. There is online and written homework to be done that is due everyweek. She takes pride in teaching and knows her material. The tests are hard, but if you do your homework you should be fine. Go to her office if you need help.. Overall, she was an okay teacher.
There were no tests before the drop period ended. There were only 2 tests and a final so if you did poorly on one then your chances of passing were low. The homework problems were much harder then what she gave examples of in class. I would not recommend this teacher.
This professor was the worst math teacher I have ever had. She does not teach the material that is needed for the class. She refuses to go over material twice because she needs to move on. I feel like she doesn't care how her students do in her class. My class started out with no seats left and ended with about 12 people in the class. Not worth it.
I don't get why others rated so low. Yes Trig is a hard subject, but do the work and you should be fine. She gives good lectures. If you don't get it then go talk to her. She wants you to pass & does care. Half the class passed and half failed, but those who failed didn't prepare enough. She's a nice lady. 2 test, 1 final, and homework every week.
She is a pretty great person and she clearly cares a lot about her work. That said, I felt that she didn't get enough time to go through the class. Trigonometry is not hard but it has some concepts that you need to practice to fully understand, and the entire time I felt rushed. You'll need lots of extra study time for this class.
one of the worst professors I have ever had. Rushes through the notes, doesnt want to explain. When anyone asks a question, she makes you feel like an idiot. I would not recommend her to ANYONE.
Not really a good teacher at all. The online assignment's help was way more useful. Doesn't really teach you and always tries to teach higher than what she should. My least favorite math teacher.
She was well organized and delivered the information in a clear manner. The tests were difficult and the online homework didn't accept answers in the format she prefers, but overall she did a really good job. I would take another class from her.
She was there for you to help but understanding her explanations of how to solve a paticular math problem or to understand the methods of equations was incomprehensible. She did not do well communicating with the class.
You can tell that she knows the subject very well and is an intelligent person... but she doesn't take the needed time to slow things down and help interpret things for us non math geniuses. lectures are very rushed and she does not make it feel comfortable to ask questions.
Terrible. I'm halfway through my first semester and have taken Calc I already in high school. Despite my understanding of the subject I still have a C- due to her awful teaching ability. Least helpful teacher I have had and her tests are 10X harder than any example, homework, or quiz problem you will attempt.
Worst professor I have had at BSU. I am good at math and this class hands down is difficult. Her tests are 10x harder than hw and quizes. She is not very helpful. I ask questions do all the chapters for reviewing for tests and go to tutoring and I still have a C- in her class.
Terrible. Tests are ridiculously hard. She is not approachable. She knows her stuff but doesn't know (or care) if you follow her lessons or not.
Weekly quizzes, tough tests but very generous grader. She is always willing to help and answer questions. She is about the process of the problem not just the final answer. Best math teacher I've had so far!!!
I came into Calculus with a bad taste from past math classes, but I was pleasantly surprised here. This is not a class you can miss very often at all, and there is a considerable amount of homework and quizzes. I'm halfway through my semester, and she is the best math teacher I've ever had. I highly suggest.
Jean is a very nice person, and obviously really knows her math, BUT! I'm a consistent A student, and had taken college alg and pre-calc before this class, but I literally Could.Not. pass this class. Tests are RIDICULOUSLY hard, much more than you can prepare for with quizzes/homework, and they consist of 70% of the grade. I don't recommend her.
She doesn't teach during class and waits till five minutes after class has ended to tell you the important information. In addition, her quizzes and tests are ten times harder than anything she teaches. She doesn't give extra credit or curve tests. Without the learning assistant everyone would fail the class.
Very tough, but a highly engaged and personable professor if you get to know her. Utilize the free math tutoring center at BSU and you should be able to make it. Come in to visit her during her office hours if you still are stuck. Jean gives you the opportunity to earn back points on tests by proving you've mastered the knowledge.
Jean is an awesome teacher. She explains everything very thoroughly and answers all questions without getting upset. As long as you do the work you will pass the class with ease. She knows what she is doing. She is also very lenient and wants everyone to pass.
Jean is a horrendous teacher, you should really avoid her at all costs. She does problems wrong on the board all the time. Class runs late all the time and her tests are nearly impossible as was the final. She doesn't seem to care about students and it was challenging to find a time that works to get help after class. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!
Great teacher. Hard, but extremely fair. Knows how to explain new material and is willing to assist you to help understand difficult material.
If you take 175 with her, go into it knowing that there's a good chance you're going to fail. She is extremely challenging and goes through content quickly just so we can spend time getting an early start on Calc 3 stuff instead of reviewing. Don't bother wasting your time, if she's your only option just wait until next semester.
Jean is an incredible teacher. Her assignments and tests are hard, but she's a generous grader if you clearly show your work and all steps involved to get to your answer. If you go to class and even so much as just copy what she writes on the board and do your homework, you'll do well.
Schneider's Math 160 was difficult, but do-able. The tests are challenging, but she is a fair and accurate grader. She can be verbally harsh in class, but overall she seeks to present the material in a way that maximizes understanding and retention. Stay on top of your assignments, be sure to come to class every day, and you will be just fine.
Getting an A in this class is possible, here's how I did it: have a good foundation in calculus 1, go to every class, do assignments on time, and study (to some degree) for each test. It's a little bit hard to keep up with every thing I mentioned, but it's what students should be doing anyways.
If you do the homework, come to class and get the required help, there should be no problem getting an 'A' or 'B' in the class. She is a very generous grader. makes time for students outside of classes. Tests are very tough, but if you have done the work and put in a few hours of study for the tests there should be no unexpected material
If you can't get any other teacher you're better off waiting until next semester.
If you take Math 160 from her you're going to have a bad time. You're only hope is to constantly be in the Mathlab or to sign up at Khan Academy. Grades very tough on both test and quizzes.
I cannot recommend you avoid this teacher enough. Overall you will have a much better understanding of Calculus if you take this from any of the other available teachers.
WARNING. Do not take this class with this professor. There is A LOT of homework, tests are VERY tough, she doesn't explain things very clear, so expect to teach yourself most of the material, or get a tutor. She doesn't give study guides so you rarely know what to study for. I don't recommend this professor AT ALL
Jean is a very nice person but sadly she is not a great teacher. She rarely finishes the notes she hands out in class leaving students clueless on homework. She is often wrong when teaching on the board, requiring students to correct her. She 2x more homework than other 160s and is a strict grader. She makes this class unnecessarily difficult.
Makes this class way harder than it needs to be, hands out these sheets when introducing new material but does not explain them to you so you're left wasting your time for that day. Way more homework, way harder tests. Would not recommend to anyone.
She is an AMAZING professor, yes, the class is hard and Math is hard, but math is hard if you refuse to do the homework and spend time on it. It is a 4 credit class so you have to put the effort in. I read comments below and I can tell you that if you are not lazy and willing to work hard you will be really happy to have taken the class from her!
Jean can be a good professor somethings. The materials are definitely difficult, and she can sometimes lecture like she expects you to already know the materials. If you ask for extra clarity and use resources like the math tutoring center you should be fine in the class. If you're struggling online videos help
Do not take the class with this professor, she gives packets to teach the material and expects you to pretty much learn it yourself. I was watching videos almost every night trying to teach myself the material. She makes the class way harder than it should be
Very unclear in lectures, assumes you will know the concepts before class. The only positive, she usually bumps up your grade if you are on the fence between letter grades. Other than that, difficult test & BORING lectures.
Honesty it's been 3 weeks since class started and I wish I had switched out. I hate the way this class was structured; she hands out worksheets without teaching, and then goes over only the very basics so when you get to the online homework you're so confused. The whole class leaves everyday feeling like we learned nothing. GO TO T/A SESSIONS
Probably one of the worst math teachers I've ever had. Calc is a hard class and she makes it 10x harder. Doesn't do any actual teaching. You go to class 3 times a week just sit there and work on in class assignments that she hasn't taught you how to do. If it is between this professor and the online class just save yourself the time and do online.
She's the reason I passed calculus. She knows how to teach math one small step at a time & build on it. She makes you work to understand the concepts. Be ready for worksheets. It's hard trying to struggle through math language for the first time. If thats not you, take it online. She teaches real world examples & concepts. Then gives u step by step
Jean is a good teacher. Her personality is pretty brusque, but I she is a nice and caring person. Her class was not too challenging for me because I have had Calc before, but I definitely had to make sure I kept up on the homework. There's a lot of it. You have homework due every class, and extra over the weekend.
Calc 3 isn't an easy class, but she managed to make it more difficult. She assigned too much homework and didn't prepare us well for the tests. She had to curve by a min of 10% for enough people to pass her tests averages were about 60% on them. The homework was worth too much and took too much time
Jean can be frustrating at times because she's a typical math teacher but overall she taught the class well and gave us many opportunities to review for tests. The LA in class helped a lot. Her grading is mostly done by TA's so it can tend to be inconsistent. She grades written assignments hard but tests fairly easy.
Does not give proper notes. Uses a printed off packet of the homework as notes and a worksheet.
There is a lot of homework and she is very particular about notation. She seems like a nice person but doesn't teach very well. She'll give you "notes" on a worksheet then you just have to figure it out on your own
If you want to save your time and money do not take this class with this teacher. Does not teach very well at all. You will have tons and tons of homework. Take with another teacher.
Tough grader and lots of homework. I did learn a lot,but it is a fast paced class. Go to the LA sessions and you will do fine. Dont plan on getting an A though if you want to have a life.
This class is almost overwhelming with the amount of homework that is given, if done correctly you can survive the class. She's helpful and willing to sit down and talk you through problems, offers test corrects but doesn't let you eat in class. Attendance is 100% mandatory and important, so is doing the homework on time.
Jean is a great instructor. She will make you learn the material. If you don't show up to class you will fails the class, bottom line. If you show up and learn you will have a fun and interactive class.
Hours of homework every day and even more on weekends. Hands out a pamphlet of the homework and you are lucky if she covers all of the material before it is due. Doesn't use the text at all - and if you solve a problem in a different way than she taught you get marked down, even if correct.
Jean is an awesome teacher and person. The people commenting that she is bad obviously did not put any time into the course. If you show up to class each day, ask questions when you are confused and do the homework then anyone can earn a good grade. I wish all math instructors structured their class like Jean does.
Jean teaches very well. If you expect to show up to class and get an easy A with no effort (I'm assuming that's what the negative reviews are) then don't take Math 160. Pay attention and ask questions. She does give a decent amount of homework but what else do you expect from a math class? The LA sessions are helpful if you need more help.
Jean is one of the best professors I've ever had at Boise State. She always begins class going over the previous homework and answering questions. After, she hands out a worksheet (which corresponds to the homework) and teaches the material. She is clear and concise and I always knew what was expected of me. If you put in the work, you'll succeed
You have to take Math160 so take it with Jean or you're are making a mistake. I went to a differnt prof for a week and they straight up didn't teach. Jean taught me the most about math in my entire life. Lot of HW but its 4 credits. She gives the tools you need to learn. And after exams a chance to get part credit back on missed questions.
Avoid this professor if you can. She is more appropriate for a high school calculus class than a college class. If you are a student that would like to be treated as though you were still a preteen, then her classes are for you. Expect required attendance, many in class worksheets, and doing problems in front of class, basically a HS class.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES. Categorically the worst lecturer in the math department. Goes out of her way to put students on the spot in the class. She will mark you down for anything and everything, regardless of whether or not its an actual error. Can guarantee she teaches the most difficult version of any course. A V O I D.
worst teacher i have ever had. I am an A+ chemistry major and i am actually failing her math class and I passed calc 2 with a 104% i know what i am doing.
Literally an embarrassment to the Math department at Boise State. It is not uncommon to have three different homework assignments assigned on Friday and due Monday. Not uncommon to ask a question and receive silence as a response. You will have to teach yourself Calculus, good luck with that. If you read this and still take it, it's on you.
Jean is absolutely amazing. If you have to take Math 160, definitely take it with Jean. The class consists of worksheets for each new concept and then doing an online worksheet that directly corresponds with that class' worksheet. She is a very clear teacher and is super willing to help students with questions. The class is extremely structured.
Very condescending, rude, and likes to put students on the spot for problems she knows they cannot solve. Wants to make people look dumb and enjoys doing so. She is a tough grader and will mark you down for anything and everything. Jean DOES NOT want you to get an A in her course. Overwhelming amount of homework. You have to teach yourself.
She is very passionate about math, the best math teacher I have had in all of my school experience. If you actually want to learn (as you have come to college to do), Jean will help you accomplish that.
It's a shame to see so many poor reviews. It's clear that she's passionate about math and wants everyone to learn. There is a lot of homework but each type of assignment has a purpose. The biggest problem, at least for me, is the replacement of lectures with worksheets. Some instruction before going through worksheets would be a major improvement.
Jean is an AMAZING professor! I will say the course was challenging and there was a lot of homework, but if you dont skip class and go to LA sessions the class is a cinch.
No real lectures or teaching- worksheets w/o lectures. I'm an A student and feel so discouraged. Expects you to bring questions but w/o a lecture how do we know what to ask? You basically end up asking about many of the homework questions. Homework way harder than any example given in class. Youtube and Learning assistant are a must to pass. AVOID.
While she has no problems elaborating further on any subject requested, she has no problem marking off points for something as insignificant as notation on one line of work even if you have the correct answer. It seems as though she looks forward to the chance of marking you off for anything she can get away with even if you have the correct math.
YOU WILL CRY OFTEN IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS! Please if there are any other options take those. You will have about 7 hw assignments a week (taking hours to complete). You have 4 exams and they are very difficult and timed. If you have to take her GO TO THE LA sessions. My LA guide saved my grade in this class. Dont get me wrong she is so nice but no.
The class setup was ineffective, took up too much time. There was 4 hours of class a week, plus 3 hours of lecture videos, and on top of that, 4 homework assignments. Communication was awful. She did not email, all important info was given in class. I was late to a class with info about an exam and failed it cuz it was not written out anywhere.
WOW. I literally made this account just for this teacher. I am currently taking her online math 160 class and let me tell you how ridiculous it is. She will mark you down for the smallest things, gives a STUPID amount of homework, and everything in my week is dictated by math. I have never actually disliked a teacher/class so much. SAVE YOURSELF!!!
I haven't yet finished the semester with Jean, but she is awesome! You have at maximum three assignments per week. A week before each test, she put out a practice exam that was fairly close to the actual exam. Definitely go to lectures and office/LA hours, and ask questions when you need to. She is a great math instructor.
Avoid this professor at all costs!! She will mark test questions as incorrect if they are not done exactly how she shows. She is not helpful at all if you email her and if you do not spend mass amount of time studying or are already extremely good at business calculus, you will fail or be behind.
Honestly, this class IS hard, especially if you don't put the work into it. You will have about 4 homework assignments a week, with some written assignments as well. She grades harder on the WA's than the tests so make sure you put time into doing them correctly. If you are motivated enough to get an A it's completely doable!
I had this professor while being online and all she would do is go over the worksheets she made. These where not any credit just notes however offer did not go as in depth as the homework gets. Hard test but allows to get points back after
This was honestly the worst class I have ever taken. I took her Math 160 class online due to COVID, and she really has no idea what she is doing. She is an extremely hard grader and gives out a lot of very difficult homework. The online lectures never made sense at all and I was lost the entire class. Tests were 100% different from the reviews.
Gives about 5 assignments a week and barley teaches in class. I have to watch khan academy videos to be able to learn how to do the homework.
Everyone in the class is lost. Im in her class for the second time after not being able to handle it online. Theres 4-6 assignments per week. Gearing up for the first exam, I have NO idea what Im doing. Shes a sweet lady no doubt, but makes calculus sound like a new language. Doesnt teach material until after the homework is due!
She is horrible. Bad class set up and doesnt spent the time in class to teach us. In my opinion she should have to learn how to teach us before she can be given the title of professor. Dont take her class. Find a way around it or take another professor or take this class at a community college. But save your self and dont take her class.
This TEACHER does not deserve to be called a professor. She doesnt know how to teach us! She goes over homework then hands us a packet of things weve never learned! Do not take her class she is such a bad teacher and one of the worst professors I have ever known. There is another professor that teaches this class and you need to take him not Jean
I loveeeeee Jean, she will call out people who dont do their work. If you do all of the homework assignments before class time you get 5% extra credit. The only thing is you have to be particular about the questions you ask but she has open office hours and will stay after class to help. She does also have learning assistants for this class.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. She called me "unintelligent " twice during the time I was in her course because I answered the questions wrong. If you have to do recitations, she picks random times and doesn't tell you until a week before class starts and expects them to work for you and if they don't, good luck. Needs to be fired asap!!
She assumes everyone knows as much about math as her and has no problem asking questions that require specific knowledge about past math classes. her in-class examples are either ridiculously easy or mind-numbingly hard. She will take off lots of points for small errors even if work is shown and you have the correct answer. In conclusion avoid.
This classes is very hard but she gives a lot of resources to help you succeed. She also has a lot of opportunities for extra credit and ways to improve scores on class work and exams. Very sweet but intense lady!
On the first day of class you sit in groups of four with other students, so it is important that you sit with kids you think are good at math because you will be working with them for the rest of the semester. Most of the bad reviews on here are from kids who either didn't show up to class or didn't do the work. If you put time in, you should pass.
If you are choosing to take MATH 160 online good luck. Have fun doing the most backward class ever. To even get access to the homework you need to get at least a 70% on a quiz about the homework that you need to quiz to open. She does have notes for you she just sends you to terrible videos she has made that maybe goes over 1 part of the class. RUN
Jean is nice and helpful, and I think people have left negative reviews about her because they don't like the class itself. If you show up to every class and ask questions (whether to her or math tutors), you should be fine. This class is a 4 credit class, so you have to go into it expecting to do hours of homework each week.
Do not take this class online. She's a fine teacher and nice enough, but her online recorded lectures are not particularly helpful, Organic Chem tutor on youtube will be your best friend! Tons of homework, 3 new subjects each week as well as required discussion board and required zoom call every week if you take it online. Take in person if needed.
This is an extremely fast-paced class and some of the subject matter can be difficult, but Jean tries her best to offer help where she can. She offers an amazing amount of extra credit opportunities for the online course, always helping to boost your grade if you put in the effort. Not super warm but nice enough. Also weekly participation required.
I wasn't taught at all by the teacher. I had to learn everything on my own. There is way too much homework required, it was a four credit class but sometimes felt like six credits. The thing I struggled with the most was the written assignments where she grades way too hard on if you do not do it exactly how she wants it. Required attendance.
Tests are 60% of your grade but that's how math classes are. I see people complaining but all of them are unwarranted as long as you put in the effort with either tutors or going to Jean's office hours. The class is difficult at times but its math so it will. Jean is alright and generally wants her students to succeed, but she won't hand-hold you.
She expects you to have many resources that most students would not have, AKA a printer to print out a test as she assigns it in the room with you for a timed assignment. Another example on a assignment I got knocked off 4 points for a 40 point assignment when I had a spot in the corner where I was trying to get my pen to work.
Despite the negative views, Jean is the best Math 160 prof out of the current three.
Jean is amazing at what she does. You could describe her style as "tough love." It's a hard class and she won't make it easy for you, but you can see that she does it because she wants you to learn it. She cares about you and will work with you when you inevitably need it. She doesn't give BS assignments, it's all necessary. Jean has my respect.
DO NOT TAKE SHE IS AFULE, i almost failed her class she expets you to know everything. But she dosent teach anything.
she's one of those professors at times you apricate for her approach of being tough on students and at times you can tell she wants you to succeed. however I would say i have 3 main issues with her, 1. doesn't answer questions: if she does the answer doesn't help 2. lessons are rushed you won't get out of class on time 3. brutal grader
This class is very hard in general, but she makes it 10 times harder than it needs to be. Under any circumstance I would not take her again. She can be somewhat disrespectful to some students and makes you feel bad for asking questions sometimes.
None of these reviews match the experience I had. Jean is great at breaking down complicated subjects into simple pieces and building up from there. She would give you a note sheet for exams and tell you exactly what you need to know for the exam. She also seemed to genuinely care about her students. Exam review sessions with the TA were good too.
This professor is an unfair grader and doesn't teach the material well. You are required to show work for how you solved problems and if it isn't the same method used as she teaches you get marked wrong. The exams are in person, you might have one online but the rest are pencil and paper. No extra credit.
She is a nice lady and a decent professor. Try to stay on her good side (stay on top of homework, ask questions). Classes are long and she is not great at relating to students. Will run classes too long, difficulty staying on her own schedule. However, for my first calculus class she did a good job teaching the subject.
