Compared to the other lecturer of this course, this professor is a huge downgrade. She takes time to flaunt her chemistry knowledge while making you feel insufficient when you don't know new material off the bat. To make matters worse, anytime you ask a question in class, you are either made fun of or ignored. Switch to another professor.

CHEM129 is a hard class as it's accelerated, and you really need to study to pass. She makes the class harder than it needs to be, and she can be pretty intimidating. I have lots of anxiety, so reaching out to her when she already seemed like she didn't want to help was hard for me. All I have to say is good luck and study hard.

This is the worst class I have ever experienced. Chem129 is a very fast paced course and is expected to be difficult. It doesnt help that the professor makes it worse. Test averages are consistently low and nothing is done to help improve. Have a question in class? Prepare to be belittled since you dont have a degree from UCLA like Conklin does.

Anytime someone asked a question, Conklin made them feel insufficient or made fun of them in some way, especially if you ask her to clarify or repeat something during the lecture. I stopped going to lecture and watched Dr. Low-Nam's lectures online, which is the only way I was able to get an A in the class.

Would berate students over certain misunderstandings...once you create an environment like that students would not like to learn anymore.

So rude. I have never heard one positive thing come out of her mouth. Even my TAs warned us before she came into our class because you would be crucified if she didn't like an answer you gave her

The course is made to be extremely difficult and is most definitely a weed out class. She refused to acknowledge my ODOS approved absences and I had to argue with her for weeks. She also berated my friend for being noisy when her low blood sugar monitor went off.

Go to Low-Nam's lectures instead, she explains thing's in greater detail rather then flying through the slides and going, "You should know this already since you're in this class". She also tends to go off topic a lot.

no. just no. she was rude and would not teach the material fully through. She would skip slides and her excuse would be "you should already know this". I actually did not know it. I did not take AP Chemistry, this class was really a wake up call freshmen year.

Dr. Conklin is not necessarily a bad person but she can be uncomfortably rude at times. During our second lecture, she asked if we had any questions and when a student asked his question she said "Did you not hear what I just talked about last class, were you not even listening, I am not answering that question" Why would she even ask the question.

If you have to take CHM 219, TAKE IT WITH ANYONE ELSE. Someone asked a question about the test because it was different on the syllabus than what she stated and she laughed at them, paused, then claimed it was a joke. She then wondered why LITERALLY no one else asked a question from that point on. Also she skips slides and blames it on the students

She will not hesitate to turn you in for academic "dishonesty" and look down upon you from her high horse as you try and explain yourself out. The labs are basically carbon copies of themselves with similar pre and post labs. Tell your lab partner this too because they can be dragged down even if you both did nothing wrong.

Conklin seems to be getting better over the years, but she still lectures very poorly and just reads off a powerpoint. The class is overloaded with busy work, and the labs are just the same thing every week. Our class is always behind in the notes, yet she still goes too fast to even write more than a couple words.

CHM129 already stands as a tough "weed out" course, but Dr. Conklin made it even worse. Despite knowing many students in the course have not taken AP Chem, she can be abrasive when you are not understanding the material. She would also skip slides with no explanations and be behind in lecture notes, then proceed to blame it on the students.

The first thing that hit me was the work and study load, which caused me to have 12-hour long academic days for most days of the week. As for exams, don't expect to pass any of them, you can fail every exam+final and still pass with a good enough work ethic. If there's an option to either NOT take this class, or have a different professor, TAKE IT

This woman awes me. Somehow in a 50-minute lecture 3 times a week she would say so much yet no one learned anything. Plus we were behind by about 2 lectures. If you think I'm kidding we would learn about the material on the homework THE WEEK AFTER IT WAS DUE. Her lectures are poorly structured and don't even bother trying to read her handwriting.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS WOMAN AT ALL COSTS. She is incredible difficult to ask questions to or email due to the fact that she will laugh at your questions. She is also well known to carelessly destroy students academically from any sign of supposed "academic dishonestly" (happed to my friend who was zoned out during an exam). TRY TO GET DR. STARR!!!!

For a student who loved chemistry prior to taking this class, Dr. Conklin certainly knows how to make you hate the subject. She is very harsh whenever students do not understand the material or answer her practice questions wrong. Additionally, she is NEVER able to finish lecture slides, which makes finishing homework and pre-labs extremely hard.

Prof. Conklin made me consider dropping out of college on multiple occasions...lol. I used to enjoy chemistry thoroughly but somehow she made it one of my least favorite classes, not to mention Conklin is rude and does not believe in mistakes. If at all possible take another professor and/or a different course as it is a "weed out" course.

This class is absolutely the hardest course I have ever taken. Dr. Conklin is ALWAYS behind on lecture, and our homework assignments go over content she hasn't covered. She covers her lectures so fast without thoroughly explaining material, is extremely harsh on students, has such unreadable handwriting, and is overall rude and unapproachable.

Dr. Conklin is an awful professor. She's always behind on all the lectures and instead of extending homework, or posting the notes, she either doesn't teach the material before homework is due or rushes through all the notes. I think my main issue is her personality. There is so so much homework, I'm doing chem at least 16 hours per week.

She's a terrible teacher and doesn't care about her students. She's always behind on notes and never extends anything, she didn't even finish the notes for the final.There's a crazy amount of work for this class and the lectures don't prepare you for any of it. If you get her, drop the class, not worth the stress and the panic attacks.

The best description I can give of Conklin is if two of the most famous professors ever, (Professor Snape and Dolores Umbridge) and the dragon from the fourth Harry Potter had a baby. Grade wise you can succeed but it will take a lot of going to office hours and getting help because the lectures are not recorded so you spend time relearning stuff.

Dr. Conklin was constantly behind, meaning that our homework that was due on Sundays contained lecture material from the next week's lectures. I found this to be terrible because we were teaching ourselves the whole semester. She sped through important information because she was behind. Additionally, she is very unapproachable and rude at times.

While it's understandable this course is difficult (2 semesters of gen chem in 1) and moves quickly, Conklin is often behind on lectures so be ready to teach yourself homework and lab material. I would recommend attending Dr. Starr's lectures as well or at least her reviews to stay up to date on material.

Terrible professor! She rambles on about random things that aren't even on the slides and then she has to speed through the last 10 or so slides because she didn't plan her time out. Our class was always behind the other 129 class so there would be content on exams that we had not even learned yet.

While this class should have been challenging for a 5 credit hour class, it was much more challenging than it needed to be. Exams were consistently more difficult than the topics covered in class as well as on the homework, and our lecture section was consistently far behind the other professor.

This woman assigned a lab in which we are required to wait for an hour for something to heat up. She came into the lab to yell at people for sitting. Not just sitting on the counter or anything, no, any sitting at all. Including towards students with chronic illnesses. She finds anything to complain about and is always extremely aggressive.

Conklin showed little respect for students and was not a friendly professor. She seemed to feel superior to students, and had little interest in getting to know us. I dreaded going to her class and hearing her speak for an hour. One of the worst professors and people I have met in my life. Stay clear of CHM 12901 with her.

She is so disrespectful.

A very rude professor, it's a shame people like this are allowed to teach. She mocked me for certain questions, and acted like I was stupid for not understanding some topics. She also did not answer my questions as she “already spoke about it”. Overall, a horrible experience and I would not recommend her as a prof a tiny bit despite getting an A.

For me, this class was a cakewalk. But not at all because of Conklin. Not sure where these “care about her students” reviews are from, but it's clearly not true from what I've seen. She seems very egocentric and did not put in much effort when some students had questions. Additionally, she does not have a gift for teaching and is quite boring…

Did not stay on schedule with lectures. Liked that she gave examples, but was disrespectful towards students

Her "drawing" workflow wastes an excessive amount of time without adding any real value.

Very rude, for a person with a high level title, instead of implementing knowledge she wants to implement control.

Transferred my junior year, wore leggings (my fault for not reading syllabus) told me I had 15 min to change, so I did and made it back in 10 min, still kicked me out of lab. Also just rude, and the TA I had was not helpful. Overall lab was easy but she made it miserable.

Dr Conklin is by far the most unconcerned, and careless course coordinator I have ever seen. First off all her labs are written terribly, very hard to understand and are unclear of direction. Second of all she is extremely rude, and any problem that might happen she does not care, and is so strict. Almost like she enjoyed to see me do bad.

I'd like to mention something about her program under the tag of Academic Dishonesty. Let's say you know some material on an assignment, you tried hard to learn that criteria, right?...wrong. You worked hard on that assignment, but AI said it wasn't your work, no matter how much you plead to get them to understand it wasn't, she won't budge.
