Hard as can be, but if you do the work she'll actually teach you something.
This was the ahrdest class I have taken...I have all A's in math except this class (B). There are _much_ better professors in the math dept.
Very hard and not clear at all
My study group HATED this woman. I think 16 people out of a class of 31 moved on to take differential equations and 15 had to repeat.
I hated math before I took her class. It was the hardest B I ever had to work for. She is a great teacher who challenges you. You just have to step up to the plate.
Very formulaic in her teaching methods. Everything is step-by-step, and she welcomes questions. Her teaching was boring as rocks to me, but it is helpful for some to be taught that way.
Quite easily the worst professor I've had at UAB. She proved a general theorem and then worked a specific case of it when requested to. In a 400 level class. She spends 3/4 of the class period covering the previous night's homework in a SIMPLE class...
I hate math.
she is very negligient with assignment corections.
Just an average teacher I suppose. Not terribly difficult but not a walk in the park either. She assigns a lot of homework and goes pretty indepth sometimes but so long as you study and do the problems you'll pass the class.
This professor has proven to be excellent thus far. The main thing that's really slowing this class is the students who have somehow managed to get into calculus -completely- unprepared, but that's no fault of the prof! (Revisiting linear equations? G
THE ALSOLUTE WORST PROFESSOR AT UAB. If I was her, I would QUIT teaching. If you can, DROP HER!!!!!!
I hate her class. The hardest class in my college years. You have to learn everything yourself. She does not teach. And what's up with waving od hands. RGR I hated her!
USELESS. Better get used to the book, because that's the only guide to calculus that you will have in her class.
Very unclear in going over the material.
OUCH! I've spent way to much time studying for a C! Pick a different calculus professor.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! HARDEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN!
Finte Math is confusing already, but she makes it useless. It's hard to understand her and waste my time by making mistakes- we, the students, have to correct her all the time. Have had better math professors in the past
She is the devil, avoid her at all costs.
Thanks to Hutchison I was able to drop my first class in college. She is extremely boring and can often get you lost. She also gives you a lot of homework but she is very lenient with it and she does curve test grades but it doesn't help much. Lord please help you if you decide to take this class.
What the **** is libelous?
awful
The class itself is boring, but Dr. Hutchinson seems like a nice lady. I wouldn't suggest taking MA110 if you don't have to, but as long as you go to class, take notes, do the practice problems and the homework assignments, and get help when you don't understand, I'm sure you can pull off a B.
she's the worst.
She says, "Ummm... Here" too much. Once you realize that she does this, you can't seem to not pay attention to it. It's like when someone like says like too much. Like. Ummm, Here. And, Ummm, here. UGH!!! It's irritating. Plus, her graders are retards. She's just too damn boring.
fuktard of a professor. She should be put taken out to the pasture and someone should pull an "Old Yeller" on her. Confusing, not helpful, boring, expects you to know everything before you take the class. She even gave us a quiz on a section she hadn't covered yet bc she got confused. SHE SUX!!!
She is so borin. And that quiz she gave the other day was so crazy. Not being mean or anything but she does really need to retire. Ummm uhhh
The only examples she works are straight from the book, but on her tests, the questions are much more difficult than any found in the textbook. She teaches above most students level of comprehension, and expects you to know EVERYTHING from the prereqs coming in, and doesn't review.
Very monotone and very boring.
Paid-for class notes incomplete - she goes over/tests on slides that are NOT included in class notes. Overheads are too large for the screen, can't completely see what she is working on overhead. She has speech tics - says 'uhm' a LOT. Needs to find a better way to teach this stuff.
extremely difficult tests. Can not only bring down your grade by the subject she teaches, but also leave no time to study other subjects
dont get me started.... Her freaking tests did not nearly replicate the difficulty of her notes. Examples in class were no-brainers, but then you see the test, and then realize "Oh wow... Ive never seen a problem like that in my whole life." Thankfully, this is the last math class Ill ever suffer.
this woman is awful. she does not explain anything to you. if you ask a question she gets smart with you. her test are awful.
Horrible teacher. Did not test on the same type of problems she used in class. Also, did not give a teacher evaluation at the end of the semester. Worst math class I've ever taken. The material isn't hard, she makes it hard.
This professor is definitely a challenge, but I wouldn't say that she is is "bad". She is a good choice, I think, for a serious student of Math who wants to get the very most out of their Math class, not someone who just wants to pass the class so that they can graduate. She takes Math very seriously, and expects her students to do likewise.
i thought that she was an awful teacher. She did not test the material taught in class. She made the easiest things so much harder than they should have been. I would not recommend her to anyone.
Do not take this professor. She is the worst teacher i have ever had she expectes everyone to allready know the material. I would rather be in school a extra semester than take her again.
she is the most lovable person in the world. She teaches you, she loves math and knows a lot, she can approach it from many angles and will take the time to help you. Partial credit is objective & a real thing with her, show every single step in you work & she will grade you fairly. Her only weakness, she has the most monotonous voice in the world.
Super professor, she will not "give" you an A, but i think its possible to make an A in her classes. After taking her, if you apply yourself, you should understand calculus and should be able to make an easy A in anyone else's class. If more UAB professors were like her, the undergrad school would be taken more seriously.
This professor just rushes thru the material. Her test are not representative of the material thought in class. She is an absolute waiste of time and money. If she's the only one teaching a paticular MATH class ur better off, skipping Math for a semester and saving your money. She is just DAAAAMMMM AWFULL.
Although she is a nice lady, she is not an effective teacher. Tests are not representative of material covered.
loves the word "ummmmmmm", annoying, boring....
Don't take this teacher. I was lucky that I already took Calculus in high school so I passed easily. This old lady though will put you to sleep. Very boring! No change in her voice during class. Never interacts with the class. She will work any problem you ask her, but you'll fall asleep during the explanation.
She was an uwful teacher and her test were worse...I failed her class and when I retook it I made an 85.
Oh well, I have read all the ratings given by the students of her who took calculus 1.. I mean its calculus 1 people, its supposed to be a piece of cake... You can pass calculus 1 without even looking at the book the whole semester (I know I can)... and saying that think what she would do when she teaches calculus 3... I am a straight A student in mathematics (never failed to do anything in math before). but with this course, I flunked... think about how hard she really is...
She's the best math teacher I've had at UAB. That's not saying anything, but she does enjoy teaching. Most of the UAB math dept profs hate you and won't help you because you're interrupting their reserach. She actually cares if you pass or fail. She's difficult but fair.
Without a doubt the worst math professor ever. She's too smart to be teaching Cal 1. Avoid at all costs
where do i start, you expect her to walk in with a plate of hot cookies with little oven mitts on...and what you get is a mathmatical enema. Overall...AVOID THIS TEACHER..period!
Her teaching was fairly unclear but most of the time I was able to follow. I worked very hard for my B. Overall, I would not recommend taking her.
take her if you want to learn math. ignore every other persons comment because she will really teach you and whould explain if you do not understand. just do the assignment and you will be okay.
She's a nice teacher, but other than that she's confusing. If you have advanced math skills, of course you will most likely do well. However, if you aren't very strong in math or just average, this class isn't for you. Her pace is intense and she gives lots of homework problems which is least around 25-30 problems that are due every week.
she really breaks the tip of the calculus boot off in your ass
Excellent math teacher. I would not recommend her for someone who is not ready to learn math, work, and be challenged. She is definitely challenging. She does not pull many punches, but she is good about giving partial credit. Alot of homework. If you need help, be ready to work for it. If she takes you seriously, she'll help you out.
She is by far the worst teacher i have ever had so far. She is totally unclear about the information that she presents. She also quizzes you on some stuff she hasn't even reviewed in class. I think that she needs to stick to calculus and let someone else take over MA 110. She needs to be put on probation...NOW!!
She doesn't do well at teaching & she gives pop quizzes on material that hasn't been learned yet. If you ask ?s in class she will try 2 make you feel dumb...but she did get snapped on this semester...overall I say AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!!!
Hard, but thorough teacher. A tad disorganized writing on the board, but she explains things thoroughly and pretty clearly -- that is, if you have done your job by not forgetting all the prerequisite math.
I actually paid money for this class. Pathetic. Grouped in a lecture hall with 500+ students, Hutchison has no idea how to teach. Students constantly have to correct her, she is confusing, speaks monotone, material on tests & quizes are on material not gone over. Doesnt know how to use the projector, her aids are incompetant, & handouts garbled.
The woman has the personality of soggy oatmeal. Doesn't appear to know the material & spends too much time babbling about the easy material & not enough on the diffcult. Don't even think about asking her a question if your confused, you might insult her.
this clas was the easiest math class i have ever taken in my life. although, she is boring and you hardly cant understand her just pay attention and you will have an A or B.
This class was a thorn in my side the entire semester. The woman is crazy and to be honest I don't know why she's still teaching at UAB. I don't think she cares one bit about her students. Very mean! She misgraded my paper and when I asked her about the problem, she saw where she should have counted off and took points off my paper!!!
Not very patient with rude students, of which there were aplenty. She could work on teaching material so that it will be more aligned with what will be on the test. I think the material is hard and that is why everyone is pissed. Don't shoot the messenger. I would like to see what the grades would be like under a different teacher.
This is the reincarnation of the devil herself. She believes that the students should teach herself and that all she has to do is to record the grades. Don’t bother trying to ask questions in class because she will be rude and possible crack a joke on you. If you have signed up then you might want to run to the HUC.
she's an awesome teacher. just listen up, go to class, and you'll have either an a or b. but you have to be responisble enough to do some work on your own
If you take this class from her, abandon your social life and prepare to do millions of homework problems only to receive a general check mark that says you did it. Willing to help outside of class. Lectures are boring but essential. You can get an A in the class by finding the limit of your social life as it approaches 0.
She doesnt care about the students, but if you show up for class and buy the notes its an easy A or B
Hell Naw. BY far the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. If she would learn math then the class wouldnt spend the whole class time correcting her mistakes. This class made me excited for class evaluation.RUN FOR YOUR LIFE
I waited a year to put this up, because I wanted to give myself time. If Satan has a daughter, it's her. Says "here" 200x/class. She's rude, and I do not doubt her mathematical ability in the least, but I do doubt that she has the ability to teach it or transfer it to students. Take someone else. Retook it w/ another prof and made an A vs F.
she is horrible..words can not describe her lack of teaching skills..she needs to retire immediatey..
She does not have the ability to "TEACH" calculus so that you understand it. I made all A's in highschool calculus.
She is a sucky teacher!!!!!! She has is out for everyone!!!! She couldn't possibly be a worse teacher.
She was ridiciously hard! Went fast - test came from notes and she wanted a higher order of thinking but would prep you for it.
She is monatone as crap but she gets the point across. If you go to class and do the homework you should be alright. study alot for the final.
She is not a bad person, and she tries at least. She is nearly impossible to understand, her ums and pauses. Her tests are completely off the wall, but if you survive her, final is a breeze.
God she sucks...she can not teach people how to do math if i hadn't had calculs in high school i would have failed she studders a lot though she is willing to answer questions it takes her forever to answer them and does it in the most indirect way her tests aren't so bad but this semester we had 4 tests in a month including the final Avoid her
Dr. Hutchinson has a tendency to ramble. She uses "uh" or "um" like every other word and is prone to making mistakes throughout her notes. I took this course as a freshman and made a B, but that was probably just because I studied like crazy for the final. If you have the option, you should really select a different instructor.
If I hadn't taken AP Cal BC the year before (got a 4) I would have been lost since it was mainly repetition of what I had already learned. Awful teacher, gets confused in the middle of what she is doing, stutters, repeats herself, messes up a lot (students have to catch her problems), etc. Avoid unless you absolutely have to take this class.
very confusing. i came out knowing less than when i started. really
She is a horrible teacher. She takes the longest possible route to get to the answer when there are dozens of easier ways. You can't understand anything that this woman says. Her writing is small and unreadable which makes it extra hard when your in a large classroom like I was. Do not take her class!!!!!!!
Made me question whether I should even be in college. She will show how to do a problem in class if you ask though. Tests are much harder than anything seen in homework or class, or even practice tests. Very hard to follow in class, I hope you can understand the book (good luck) or took cal in high school. I regret not dropping while I could.
She says "hey" and "um" a lot and it's really distracting. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU CAN HELP IT! I have already taken a calculus class before I took it with her and I think that's the only reason I'm not failing.
Class boring.. Goes around the world to explain simple techniques. If you can, don't take her.
I took calculus in highschool and still could not understand what she was teaching I had to go by how my highschool teacher taught it but it would be marked wrong if I did not do it her way even if I got to correct answer! Do not take!
DON'T take her!!!! She is probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had since middle school (and that was horrible)! She has a PhD in math but you wouldn't be able to tell from her teaching. Just take someone else for your sake.
TRY NOT TO TAKE! She is almost impossible to follow, and by the time she's gone through and fixed all of her mistakes, you have forgotten what problem you're talking about. She is nice though, and I think she has the best intentions. Also, she is willing to help if you ask her question before, after, or during her class. In summation, try to avoid.
if you did not take calculus in highschool, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Awful at teaching the simplest things. She makes more mistakes than the students do. If I hadn't taken calculus in high school, the class would have been a nightmare.
I am so glad I took calculus in high school or I would have failed this class. She knows what she's doing, but she can barely teach it to other people. She thinks she helps us a lot...but she really doesn't at all. Try to take another teacher!
I had a really difficult time in her class. Her lectures were hard to follow and boring. The combination of a 2 hour class and her droning is the perfect recipe for falling asleep. If you take her, my advice would be to get a tutor and ace the final. Get an A on her final and you'll get an A in the class. Dont let the 3 D's on her exams get to you.
Older teacher who has difficulty explaining most things, grades tough, and is very slow. Hated her linear algebra class
If you are not good with a teacher that cannot guide you through the class, you should not take any class with this professor. She knows what she is saying but has no idea how to teach it to a student that is not trying be a mathematician.
Oh my goodness. Register for this class if you don't care about failing and not understanding calculus." Hey. Um" are the most used words in the class.
If you have a choice, do not take this professor. The HARDEST professor I have ever had to deal with and I'm a Biology major. Her tests are infinitely times harder than normal Calculus teachers. I've compared my tests to others in different classes and they have it easy. Really annoying when he ends all her sentences with "yeah", yeah?
If you have to take linear take it with another professor or the one for engineers. A large portion of the tests concern proving if a statement is T/F from a list in textbook. The textbook does not have the proofs in it, so you must find it online yourself. Most people had to use YouTube to try and learn linear algebra on their own.
You know that really sweet old lady that you see crossing the road, and you can't help but smile and assist her. Now imagine that lady teaching you calculus in down-to-earth, enjoyable southern parables. Every now and then you'll hear her drop a hey, um hilarious uh joke here and just listening to her speak will brighten your day. She is a saint!!
She is a terrible teacher. Teaches the most difficult process to get to answers. Does not answer questions with accuracy. She makes mistakes during her lectures many times. Her tests are near impossible. She suggests to look at the test banks for past tests.... Dont because hers are nothing like any of those tests. AT ALL.
Sweet old lady but her method of teaching is terrible. Instead of teaching you how to apply what you're learning, she shows you how the method or law was first discovered. She often makes mistakes and only realizes it after filling up two boards with information. The final was hardly anything covered in class. Avoid if possible.
Linear Algebra is very hard course to understand by yourself and you'll need someone to help you understand, however she's not very good at teaching this course. If you go to her during her office hours and show that you are trying for her class, she will help you get a good grade. But seriously this class is really hard.
I took calculus in high school and I don't know how I would've passed this class without that background. Her lectures are very difficult to understand and all over the place. It can be a good refresher course if you take a lot of time outside of class to study. Would definitely NOT recommend if it's your first time taking the course.
She loves to give pop quizzes after introducing a new topic. She uses a white board in class and hates to erase, so it can be hard to follow. She does give quizzes after tests to give us an oppurtunity to make up lost points, but she is all about showing the work.
She is a wonderful person but a horrible teacher. I didn't learn a thing from her, I taught myself the material. If you have no exposure to Cal 1, you WILL FAIL. if you do you can probably pass.
Class is awful. She does not teach just calculus 1 she also teaches cal 2 and 3 in here cal 1 class. When asked for examples she does not clarify the answers or where they came from. She is a horrible teacher because she does not know how to explain things. If you do not have to take her then do not. Because you will end up dropping or failing.
Makes the class arbitrarily more difficult than it should be. Writes notes in cursive, constantly gets stuff wrong. Assigns long and confusing homework.
Brutally vague lecture style, much more focused on proofs of theorems than applications. Constantly makes mistakes in review of homework. Seems to have a kind nature, though, so using office hours could help. Buying solutions manual made the course easily navigable, and I ignored lecture after the first few meetings. Curved to an A though.
If you're good at learning on your own, then you should be fine in this class. For the rest of us, her lectures are straight from the text book and she answers questions in class vaguely. Her main method of teaching is assigning loads of ungraded homework and telling you to go get help from the homework lab, aka getting other students to teach you.
Do yourself a favor and never take this professor. I came into her class with no previous background. I have never studied so hard for a math class before and I am an Engineering student. I can confirm what the others have said. If you do not have previous experience in the subject, you will most likely fail it. Like me.
She is nice most of the time, but her class is very hard. Her lectures are very vague and hard to follow. If you have to take her get some extra tutoring help.
Awful horrible. Gives problems on tests based on material she hasn't even taught. Voice is dull and boring and she's terrible at explaining things and answering questions. Every lecture is composed of her mumbling along and writing on a board not visible to half of the class. Cannot speak with inflection to save her life.
Very long and boring lectures that make no sense. Only somewhat survived by going to tutoring sessions. I showed the tutors my work and they told me she teaches the material in the most complicated round about way possible. Also get ready to learn by this one sentence "Here we have this and then we do this to um hey get this!"
Has a problem when teaching things to talk about the theorectical implications of what you just learned before talking about how to use it. Mostly taught myself the material. Not a fantastic teacher but she did do me a solid and let me make up a test even though I didn't have a doctor's note.
Spare yourself. I took calculus in highschool and still struggle in this class. She takes off soooo many points for simple mistakes on tests. Every single class is a lecture. Hard to pay attention to.
You might as well skip every class and learn it on your own time, because you won't learn one thing in class. Very boring and I found my self doing the work on my own. The only way to stay awake in class is to play around on your phone. LOL
Not a good professor AT ALL. Teaching methods seemed to consist of writing stuff down from the book- focused more on applicational formulas and the theory behind it instead of how to work problems. Tested on actual problems. Tough grader, made my first F in the class after 5 years of engineering school. Would NOT recommend.
I felt like the lectures were not helpful when it came to doing the homework. Textbook is crucial and where you will learn the most. There are occasional pop quizzes. Tests come with study guides but are difficult. Would rather have taken this class with a different professor, not enough specific problems in class. Couldn't explain clearly.
WORST TEACHER EVER! Due to covid-19 and all classes moved online, I choose to take her class and she does not post Lecture Videos to help the students, instead this is a self taught class and she expects you to read the textbooks and do online homework and has other written assignments for you. Tough class because she does not care for her students
I took this class during the COVID-19 pandemic when everything was moved online. She gives no lectures and instead refers you to free khan academy videos to learn the material. The tests are very difficult despite the only study guide being past tests with no answer keys. Im amazed that she is still employed despite not teaching her classes.
I took this class during the pandemic which caused it to be moved online but still treated the class as an in person class but without the lectures, she made us refer to khan academy and the book to substitute the lectures. I had to teach myself most of the time and test were very difficult and different from the practice test. DO NOT TAKE HER!
I took this class during COVID. We were sent links to the text book, and to khan academy then had to take test that were extremely difficult. She was very nice about rearranging due times so that I could still work at my job though. If you can tech yourself then youll do fine, but if you cant I would not recommend.
She does not teach, instead gives links to free Khan Academy videos. The tests are very hard, and these videos will not prepare you for them. You will need extra resources such as a friend who has taken the class to help you.
She will assign pages in the book to read but does not lecture at all. I am someone who has to learn hands on or visually. The way she has this class structured makes it pretty much impossible for someone with my learning style to pass. The lab doesn't even offer tutoring for MA 260 so I have been on my own.
She will notice you about the up coming test, but never provides any kind of review material. The recitation materials are only lecture notes and assignments. For the lecture, I barely understand what she lecturing, and seems like she just read of the textbook and redo the example question which written on the book.
This is my last semester of college and she is, by far, the worst professor I've had. Her lectures cover about 20% of the material you actually need to know for tests... the rest you have to read directly from the book. If you give a solution that isn't taught by the book/herself, she won't take it.
Just as bad as everyone says on here. Unclear lectures about math theory without examples. Tests on examples. 3-4 hours of homework per week over things we didn't do in class. Hardest class I've taken after having a 4.0 in engineering as a junior. You have to teach yourself everything. Do not take her. Take at a different university if you have to.
I took Hutchinson in the Fall for Linear Algebra and I can say with strong confidence that it was the worst experience in a college course so far. The class consisted of homework every week for every section with no defined due dates. You MUST go to class if you want to known when anything is and the lectures are horrible. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Dr. Hutchison just copied examples from the book for lectures. There would be around 30 questions of homework per section and there would be 2-4 sections due every week. The quizzes were very hard. Some times she would give partial credit and some times she wouldn't. We didn't know our grade until the end. She was good about answering questions.
