Awesome teacher! Very nice and extremely helpful!!
sometimes vague
She makes it easy and enjoyable to discuss lit. Lots of material, well rounded
very fun, helpful, and friendly. It was a blast being in her class.
Amazing teacher, really fun to be with. Our class went out with her for a beer at the end of the semester! I can't say enough good things.
Bad Teacher. Extremely nice to talk with. When it comes to marking she is definetly brutal.
Excellent teacher! I hated literature and she converted me. Highly recommended.
seriously the best teacher i have had at camosun. she goes out of her way to make sur eeveryone understands, she's a fair but hard marker, and she really creates an environment where you feel you can ask questions and have dialouge in class.
I've never done good in English and Jeanne was awsome. I agree that shes a hard marker, but if you get a bad mark she gives you advice on what you could of done. She gets students involved. I really feel like I have an more of an understanding of English
Best english prof at camosun, in my opinion. Lots of fun, very clear, tough but fair marker. Always willing to help you. I had a great experience in her class!
Iribarne is a pretty good prof, she's always willing to help, but damm is she a tough marker or what...i guess she means well!
Very good teacher. Professional, but friendly. Will go out for a beer with students. Hard marker but fair. One of the best English teachers I've ever had!
Amazing english teacher, she taught me skills I can actually use, one of Camosun's best
Well I LOVED her class! She is always there for you, goes above and beyond, and yes..she's a tough marker... but the challenege and her honestly only helped me. THANKYOU J!
Very difficult marker. Awesome person, very easy to talk to, and always willing to accomodate your needs. eg. Let me email her my essay when my printer broke, even though it would be late. Again, hard marker.
Jeanne is an awesome teacher. Friendly and funny but can definitely be a hard marker. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; it makes you work harder. I recommend her as a teacher, and I plan on taking more of her classes.
A great professor. You can tell that she loves to teach because she always comes to class in a good mood. The things we learned in class will help me in future English classes, and in other classes as well.
Absolutely hands down the best english teacher I 've ever had, and I HATE english! I've never seen a teacher bring a class togeather like that. I enjoyed going to class! Her vibrancy and presence is fabulous... if you have an opportunity take on of her classes!!
Ilove J! Sh eis by far not only one of my favorite professors, but she is one of my favorite people! She is smart and down to earth. She just loves teaching, and passes on her passion for beautiful literature and phrading. Overall, one of the best learning experiences I have ever had!
Amazing teacher. Learned my English fundamentals from her, always positive, very understanding... Feels like she is your friend, very genuine person, HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!!...
Awesome teacher. J made English class fun. Our discussion topics were all interesting and up to date. You could tell that she puts a lot of thought in her classes and that she has immense passion for English. Loved her.
Amazing instructor but tough marker. So much enthusiasm and she turns the class into one big family. Awesome person, semi-difficult class. Take it if you really want to improve your grammar!
Awesome class to take. J, is a really good teacher who encourages your ideas and helps you take the most from the class. Engl 164 is very interesting. Definately a good course to take. Keep in mind that it is Native Lit so it's not your regular Lit class but still very, very worth it.
I took her online course. I thought it was difficult to take eng 160 on online. However, I did!! She is really nice and helpful. IF you have struggled a literature course before, you should take her class.
J's great. She makes sure to keep the day to day process of the course fun and interesting. She hones in on key conceptsl; and so you actually become a better writer. Inspiring and encouraging.
I think J is a very caring sweet and understanding person. She makes me feel like I`m learning from a friend but not in an awkward or bad way. I guess I agree that she is somewhat of a tough marker, but she is not super strict about deadlines as long as you do the work, which is such a refreshing change.
J is one of those very rare instructors that can teach equally well to students of all levels. She is super smart and really knows her stuff but also always understands that students need to be fostered into knowing not punnished for not. She's one of the best professors I've had and I would strongly encourage anyone to take a class with her.
Jeanne is an excellent A+ professor. She is very helpful both in and out of class. I highly recommend her and will be taking her classes in the future.

J is my all time favourite prof! I learned so much in her poetry class, and I feel like I am a much better writer now.She has such a great spirit, and reallt believes in her students. Take her class! I know I'm looking forward to seeing her again in the Fall.
She tries too hard to be a friend, we don't need friends, we need teachers. She needs to be more organized and clear.
Trys too hard to be a friend, treats us like we are infants, isnt clear on assignments (for example, she explained what she wanted for our last essay the day before it was due) gives too much "fluff" and not enough information and lessons.
-sighs- Someone beat me to it. I'm shocked to see that I have this much of a problem with her compared to the res of who posted.
Profiles a person and then marks accordingly, unclear on what she wants and when she is clear she doesnt supply sufficient time.
She's great.Friendly, encouraging and easy to approach. If I didn't understand an assignment she took the time to explain until I did. Jeanne made a point of asking if everyone understood assignments after explaining requirements. She didn't spoon-feed me and I definitely had to work hard and ask some questions but it paid off.Loved her!
Gotta love how she tells you what she wants on the essays and exams on the class BEFORE they are due! The worst teacher ever.
Extremely helpful, though she marks quite hard. Her English classes involve the entire class and are more like philosophy. Very deep and she manages to engage the entire class very well. Amazingly she provokes actual "thought" from students... Overall, this is the best instructor I've ever had in any subject.
I liked this prof because she was interesting and funny, and tried to get the class to really think. Unfortunately, thinking was not most students' forte, so she didn't manage to provoke much meaningful discussion, but not for lack of effort on her part. English is a joke, but I give her an A+!
I thought she was a great teacher. Eng 150 is such a boring class, but she was always interesting and gave engaging exercises for mundane topics. I found her generous with her time, and availability. She seems like a really nice person, and inspired about teaching english. She's good. And has a good sense of humour!
Very good teacher, engaging class discussions. She tries to get everyone involved. The material had more of a philosophical and political science bend to it, which I personally loved. Tests and essays were marked very fairly.
Jay is an amazing prof. Her classes are a joy to attend and she makes poetry something everyone cal enjoy. I recommend her to anyone who wants to take an English class.
Good professor.
J is very nice, friendly, and extreamly helpful. I really enjoy her class. The class is not too hard, and what I have learned from the class is quite interesting!
She is very helpful, and very willing to give help outside the classroom. I wish i was able to have her again.
I loved J. She's very helpful, knowledgeable and approachable. Her tests are quite hard for an English course, but she makes up for it by handing out marks for just showing up to class. She keeps her class interesting, it's never a chore to go. Highly recommended!
I didnt like English to begin with, and this was definitely NOT english. it was a philosophy course. i didnt sign up for philosophy, i needed english. when i asked for tips to enjoy the class more, she gave no help at all. HATED every single second of this class.
What a great prof. I really disagree with the last rating, although she definitely has a political and philosophical bent to her lectures, she IS still teaching English. I found her extremely helpful and am taking Lit with her next semester. She gives WAY fewer essays than others at this college who teach 150.
Good personality. Fair marker. Easy to talk with. extremely helpful. But sometimes she's a bit vague with the essay requirements(e.x. MLA style).
Good teacher. When she realized everyone was in a business course she tailored the class to it.
Graduating from uvic this year so lots of comparison in this review. She was one of the best profs I've ever had, and by a HUGE margin, the best english/writing prof. Offered helpful comments on marked papers and encouraged free-thought discussions in class! She held a high, yet not unreasonable standard. No doubt she's Camosun's best.
J was my favourite teacher and her class was surprisingly my favourite as I am a science major. Of 5 courses this year I got 4 A+s and one A. The A was in J's class. It was my lowest mark but J makes you work for your marks and my A in english was the mark I was the most proud of. The material she picks is so amazing and the class is so enjoyable.
I didn't think I would like this class so much but J made it fun! Some in my class told me that J didn't teach the structure of scripts very well- really, she pointed out where to read about it and used class time for discussions. She's always happy to answer Q's after/before class or during her office hours as well. Fabulous teacher.
Pretty good teacher for a first year course, needed more instructions for assignments and class ended a bit early than expected
I absolutely hated English in high school, but J made my first year in English really fun. I never thought English could be this interesting, though I think she could be a little more clear on her assignments and sometimes she does let you go out of class early(which could be good or bad :P)
I wasn't looking forward to the heavy reading I thought i'd have to do in this class, but Jeanne integrated the readings into an in class discussion that quickly transformed my ways of thinking. She delves into the intricacies of literature and the hidden messages that some portray. She gets two thumbs up.
If you want to understand how to academic writing this is not the class for you. Very confusing, and not at all what I had expected.
Was absolutely dreading this class but had to get it out of the way. Jeanne completely changed my way of thinking in terms of literature. She's opened up a flood of new possibilities and I have a new appreciation for literature. Taking her other English classes just because I loved her so much.
Good prof. Really friendly and approachable. Easy marker. Not a huge amount of reading, but stay on top of what is assigned as you will need to do in class writing. Moderate course load. If you have decent writing skills going into this class you'll have no problems.
Jeanne is an amazing human being. Polite, interested, and eager to listen to your comments, questions, and suggestions! What a kind hearted person! Memorized all our names on the first day, and treats us like equals. Choose this teacher if you have a chance. She's really great!
Fantastic teacher. Will go above and beyond for students. She found out I was a history student and gave me a ton of books and info on essay writing in history format. Forgave a lot of errors in my writing Chicago in a class writing MLA format. So helpful! I have already recommended people take her class!
Incredible teacher. She has so much passion. She adapts her classes to what works for what program you are taking. She does not use a textbook but a coursepack. She is very kind and understanding if you cant get an assignment in on time. Due dates are by 11:59pm online on the day, instead of in class.
Dr. J is a cool cat and someone I wouldn't mind having a beer with, but she expects a lot of work to be done. Multiple readings for every class, and if you don't have time to do them, there is little point in going to that class as you'll just look like a fool in group discussion.
Jeanne is a fabulous professor. She genuinely wants her students to improve, and gives very helpful notes. Marking was very fair. I felt like I deserved the grade I got on assignments after she explained why, and I consistently improved. She is very fun and bubbly and I always looked forward to her class. Very informative and interesting class.
J was a great prof, and willing to help students during class and further during office hours. She wants you to succeed and understand. Assignments, midterms, and essays were good, put in the effort and you'll easily get a good grade. All her classes were interesting and engaging. She's very respectful and openminded to different opinions.
J is the most amazing prof! Her lectures and group discussing result in you learning something new each class. Make sure you read the reading! They are very thought provoking and her assignments have quite a bit of your grade riding on them but if you are unsure of anything talk to her and she is always willing to help! Inspiring prof.
I have taken a couple of classes with J now and I really enjoy her classes. She is incredibly knowledgeable, accessible and super encouraging to students. I have learned so much from her this last semester and am sad I won't have the chance to take more classes with her. She's hilarious too, and a really good mediator. Can't say enough good things
Nice person but challenging marker. I would not recommend if your more of a simple writer. Expect a lot of reading as well.
Highly recommend. J wants her students to succeed and is available during office hours, after class, or via email. She is quick to respond and very helpful. She will not spoon feed you - you must be proactive if you need extra help. She has great energy and is very effective at leading class discussions listening intently to all who speak up.
I loved Jeanne as an instructor. She is one of my favourites in the English department. She is super clear with her instructions and gives really great feedback on how to improve. If you are ever in need of individual support, she will spend the time with you. She cancels class if it isn't necessary and doesn't waste your time.
I really enjoyed her classes and teaching style. She encourages students to think for themselves and to share their ideas in class. She is a tough grader but very fair. J challenged me to work for my A+ instead of coasting through. She provides a ton of feedback and is always available to meet with you if you need more help or clarification.
I couldn't recommend Jeanne enough! Her lectures are very clear and she gives a lot of examples to make the material clear, and also a lot of information on what to do for the essays. She's always there for help and if you put the effort into your work, she will give you a good grade. She's definitely one of my favorite teachers!
Jay is very helpful and encouraging, and is a great teacher, especially if you already have an interest in the subject of the class. Her grading criteria can be unclear and she doesn't give very detailed feedback. Use her office hours and an A is very achievable.
Jeanne (or J, as she likes to go by) has been my favourite post-Secondary teacher that I've had. She was very straightforward - each day, she wrote the lesson plan on the board. Insanely approachable, funny, and really pushed people to do their best. She will always be one of my favourite teachers.
J is pretty cool. She is approachable and kind, and tries to make the course content engaging and interesting. She will make you work for your grade, but is not unreasonable. Overall I would recommend her.
J is a great prof if you plan on pursuing English as your major. She has high expectations for first year students, and does not teach writing styles relevant to other programs. Her lectures can be interesting, but often seems to allow her personal beliefs to shine through in discussions. First time for a grade under an A, & loss of confidence.
J is a great prof who really cares about her students and will go out of her way to help them. This course was amazing with her. She does mark tough but if you ask for help before hand she will give it! Would take another class with her.
J was a wonderful instructor. She was very helpful and genuinely wanted her students to succeed. She was insightful and it helped to take notes of what she said about each short story, novel and poem, as the midterm and essays were mostly based on class discussions. I found her midterm to be slightly difficult but her final was straight forward
Best prof I've ever had. While her lectures aren't extremely rigid (she invites participation) they do follow a kind of arc, so that by the end of any given class you're actually excited to hear her conclusion--a very rare skill.
An incredible educator. Lectures are student/conversation driven, so the class schedule and curriculum are a little unpredictable. But she's a fantastic discussion lead - great classroom atmosphere.
J is a wonderful prof at Camosun. English was a required course that I was not really looking forward to but she made it really enjoyable! She is hilarious, with a real passion for english. She cares about her students and was super helpful when it came to the exam and essays. Would %100 take a class with her again!
J is an amazing prof. Ive always loved English but she inspired me to major in it. This was my first college class that I felt confident sharing my opinion on a reading, as the class environment was very open and engaging with others. She inspires you to think of concepts more in-depth youre ideas feel important. Best English prof ever.
She is a beautiful human. Her lectures are reliably awesome, I took a billion of her classes and loved every one. She makes you feel so comfortable and is just such a cool and laid back Lady. I adore her and so did everyone in the class.
Absolutely wonderful teacher with a huge passion for teaching and really shows that she cares for her students. She is a tough grader, but you will actually learn essential skills in her class. Lots of homework, but she is extremely reasonable with deadlines and extensions. I would take this class again in a heartbeat.
Clear and concise. Gave lots of outside resource. Answers emails quickly and with care. Aware of students heavy course work and flexible with deadlines. Offered to be a reference for scholarship applications. Gave helpful information for first year students including how to access grades and exam dates on camlink. Awesome prof for online learning!
J is so sweet and funny, very very flexible and understanding when it comes to assignments. gives excellent feedback with a voiceclip and corrections to your paper. made an overall boring class fun. lectures are short and to the point, readings are interesting, assignments are relevant and useful skills. J is great and kicked ass with covid learnin
Shes a good teacher. It is really easy to ask questions and have a fast answer. Her lectures have topics that we may be interested and can be useful in the future.
Such an amazing and down-to-earth professor. Great online class that always seemed to run smoothly, and she is great at getting students to open up out of their shells to participate. I enjoyed her class and teaching immensely.
Very nice, caring, open to conversation. Clearly cares about her students and is very accommodating if you reach out to her.
Jeanne is a fantastic, caring and interesting person and prof. Her class is one of my favorites I have taken in my school career so far. The workload is spread out well and feels doable. There is lots of class participation. You get to know your classmates well. I would highly recommend her class!
Do not recommend too many readings just to be tested on one reading that's randomly picked out of a hat the day of the exam. It was way too much workload to learn anything, and after having a different ENGL151 prof, I can say there's better.
Dr. J is kind and easy going. She makes English lectures more-than-tolerable, and inspires critical thinking. She is generous with feedback on papers, and her process towards final essays involves a great draft/feedback procedure, allowing for tremendous opportunity to learn and succeed. Participation counts towards your grade, so do speak up!
