Forces her opinion on everyone and doesn't care about anything else. Also, very offensive to people.
When she stays on topic the class puts me to sleep. when she gets off topic it becomes hard to deal with the things she throws out there. she only gives a midterm and a final exam.
Absolutely terrible teacher! Having only a midterm & final sucks..impossible to get your grade up if you do poorly on one. Lectures are super boring..never stays on topic. Very boring teacher..do yourself a favor & don't take any of her classes!
This teacher is extremely liberal and that's difficult for more of a conservative like me. However, she is very good at bringing new ideas to students and challenges them. She is very willing to help students who faulter on their midterm and will do whatever it takes to get her students to suceed.
AVOID her at all costs! She uses an extensive vocabulary which is more confusing than an advantage. She only gives a mid-term and final, and the lectures SUCK! If you don't agree with her, you're screwed. Not a good professor at all.
I really enjoyed class with her, she kept it interesting and if you payed any attention to the lectures you could do decent enough in the class. The midterm was nothing like the practice exam she gave us, but she gave extra points, and the chance for extra credit. Take her.
Having only the Mid-term and Final for a grade wasn't bad but her lectures are terrible, they never seem to come to any conclusion or point, it's all opinion, besides that she blames all her lifes problems on the fact that she was raised Catholic and she's a woman liveing in a man's world.
She is a great person and a very good sociologist, but she is an awful teacher. Try to aviod.
This teacher is a ****. Try baseing your entire grade over a 18 chapter test with only 88 questions. WoW, what a ****.
She doesn't teach sociology, but rather teachers her own liberal views. I agree with her on some topics, as I am a liberal myself, but if you're going to teach, teach the material objectively. No one wants to hear your extreme left wing politics. This class turned me off to Sociology.
I had the hardest time in this class. I went to every lecture, read the book and spent hours studying. She was interesting to listen to but as soon as the midterm and final you had no clue what the answers were. It's almost impossible to get a good grade. I haven't talked to anyone who got one.
This professor is awsome for people who have any amount of intellect. Her lectures are interesting and even at times fun. She's very willing to help students and really cool. But you gotta earn your grade. True the class is difficult but its really worth it.
Good prof! Tests are hard and the course is. Just go to class, overview the book, and don't be afraid to go ask for help. She is willing to help!
I really liked this class. If you just pay attention to the lectures and read the assignments the class is not hard at all. She gives her viewpoint, but also encourages others oppinions. She will even play devils advocate. Makes you think.
I took this class last semester, thinking it should be an easy 101 class. This teacher teaches nothing from the book! She hands out no assignments and only has 2 exams. Also her extra credit was 10 pages for 10 points. Don't take her if you are worried about your GPA!
wow i learned more about he life than i did sociology. Dropped the class cause i am not going to have a low GPA cause of some self involved "sociolgist" since all she seems to talk about is herself.VERY UNCLEAR AND UNORGANIZE> DANGER WILL ROBINSON< DANGER!!!
This class is too much material. There is only two tests, when there should be at least 6, the lectures are somewhat interesting, but it's hard to take notes because she talks so fast. She welcomes opinions, which is nice, but she should make the class less difficult.
really hard class not for freshman
she's not the greatest teacher, but she gets the job done, i passed with a B without paying much attention to her lectures. i remembered most of it from high school for the midterm, the final i actually studied for, need to work for your grade.
HORRIBLE AND BAD. you can't give to exams and expect the majority of the students to pass when most professors give 4 to 5 exams for that class...
Interesting to listen but is hard to take notes and listen at the same time. She added a 3rd test this semester and drops the lowest test score. I don't see how people complain about a bad grade when there are pratice tests in the book and on the website and a lot of those Q's are on the test.
If you are looking for ease, this is not your class,if you are looking at actually learning about how real life is definatly take this class. It will help prepare you for what the Real world is like. She chalanges you to actually think and not just skim a book for answers.
I took a sociology class before this one, and if you want to work hard at a 100 level class, dont take this one. She took easy material and made it confusing. I'm not a big fan of sociology but i really thought that this class was ridiculous. I got a B, but i dont think she should be able to teach this class that way. NOT RECCOMENDED.
amazing professor. I would take her again if i could. Definitly recommend her to anyone interested in sociology.
not easy clasess but if you went to learned more material than grade that is good classes for you.I got a B but what i put on it is more than a B. little boring sometime other it okay.
What a fabulous professor! The insight was enlightening and I felt it was well worth my time to be there for every session. It is clear that she cares about her students, and was available to me when I needed extra assistance. A tough course but well worth it!
She is a great professor. She challenges you. She makes you think. She is just awesome. She is hard if you're not willing to do the work. But if you do the work and you study and you take notes you will have a blast with her.
I have never had as much trouble in a class as I did this one. I have taken 3 years of soc in highschool, so i thought this class would be easy.I went every single day, took notes, asked her for help and did the extra credit and still failed. There was no hope. Her lectures were biased and her tests here horrible.A midterm and a final that was it:(
Strict, but very fun if you don't make her mad. She's willing to help, and you have to understand how she grew up to understand how strong she is. I personally walked out of her first class thinking, 'I want to BE her when I grow up!!!"
She is a very nice person but her class is extremely biased. Unless you share her view points it makes it difficult ot follow her logic. I would not recomend this class to anyone who is anything but a strong liberal.
Her class style is boring... Avoid at all cost.. She only gives t ogrades a midterm and a final... if you do poor on one you are screwed!
She is very nice and she knows what she's talking about, but her exams are probably the most difficult I've ever taken. If you want to pass this class, you need to take some pretty serious notes, lecture notes, and read the book TO THE LETTER. I studied from the book and the did the online quizzes and I still bombed the exam. Good luck.
This class was the worst of my college career. She was terrible. I feel like it was a waste of my money to show up to azll the classes, read the readings, and still bomb her tests. She wasn't helpful at all. Good luck if you have her. Even though as a person she's nice...as a prof she needs to work on it. 100 lvl course should not be like that
She was a very funny, very understanding teacher. She would try to help if she could, without being unfair to the other students. Although the class is harder then it looks. You must really pay attention!!!
She talks too fast to take notes and the lecture isnt from the book. You have to go to class everyday and do all the reading in order to get a passing grade. Also random quizzes....
This was a very hard class. Do not get the notion that taking a 101 Sociology class will be easy. She is not a bad Professor and does care about her students. She wants you to work hard and NEVER gives you anything. She wants to see you work and learn from it. With that said, her lectures tend to be a bit confusing and tests are VERY HARD.
She is passive in teaching but runs a dictaorship style class NO LAPTOPS! only for quizes. Her tests are hard only 33 questions with so much material in the book and lecture notes. She did give out extra credit. Take her class if you are willing to put hours and hours into it. If you want to be on her good side sit in the front and be a pet to her
This was the only time I could fit sociology into my schedule, and all of my friends said to take Loukken, but I couldn't...worst mistake ever...not only did my friends pay half less time studying, they also failed the tests horribly, but yet got a B in the class, since he curves...this professor does not, and her tests are hard. Dont take her!
She was awesome...If you just payed attention in class you would get what you needed to know. She's very helpful if you just ask. I barely picked up the book and got a decent grade. Bonus: Her lectures aren't boring.
I think that comment about the getting an A without reading the book is very wrong. You have to study A LOT for this class in order to do well. Reading the book is completely neccesary. A good thing about this class is that her lectures are very intresting so you don't get bored.
Can be a easy class if you actually go to class. everything is done on the computer (quizzes, exams). she does a few in class assignments (usually group things). just read the book and pay some attention in class and you'll do fine. she only cancelled class twice. expect questions on exams to cover some in class material. no homework really.
it's a decent class, but at the same time if you don't agree with her, bewear that she will single you out and by name as well. Otherwise she's not too bad, just make sure your a full time NMU student, or no time for you!!!
Ok teacher. Definetely a ton of reading. The tests are not extremely difficult, and you can definetely tell she holds a feminist point of view.
have no idea where she would pull the test info from...talked too fast to take notes, lectures were boring. never knew what to expect when it came to the tests. pop quizzes, and confusing tests.
I love SOC. but what a terrible teacher. Avoid her. You have no clue what will be on the test. She picks some stupid random facts from the book and doesnt ask about the sociological theories. You better know that she uses a SORBET as an example cuz thats what she asked, not what the SORBET was used for. Reading the book doesnt help for pop quizzes.
Test questions are difficult and poorly worded.
Jeane is a great prof. She is understanding and is willing to change her syllabus for the best of her students. Her lectures keep me totally alert, and also help me to boost my test scores. Tests include book and lecture, but its book ideas not the nit picky little ideas. People complain because they arn't willing to work and don't want to learn
cool.
Not my favorite class but easy to pass. As long as you read the book and listen to the lectures you're set. She's really interesting and is more concerned with making sure you understand the material and is flexible with her exams.
She get it. Most people don't.
I like her as a person and she's a good Sociologit, but the tests are so hard and I'm not doing that great on them. I might have to drop the class. I'm hoping not to, but that might be the best thing for me.
DO NOT TAKE SOCIOLOGY WITH HER! her lectures make no sense and she puts random questions on the tests. she is a very nice person but not a good sociology teacher. if you want to take sociology and she is the only teacher that fits your schedule WAIT UNTIL YOU CAN TAKE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE. taking this class was a horrible mistake don't do it.
Yay You! You are totally awesome!
I took this class online, it was good. 5 pg paper due every Wed and exam every Fri. As long as you read what is assigned (a lot) you'll do okay on the exams. 15 page term paper at the end, generous grading. Good class overalll.
Great lady but...her class sucks! All we do is watch movies and she always goes off topic. Although she is interesting to listen to, it doesn't help in the effort of getting a good grade. If you take this class you are on your own with about 500+ to read for each test. I'm almost done with the class and shes given us notes once.
Great Professor!!! She is energetic and interesting during lectures so you can tell that she loves her job. Occasionally she will pop in a movie which is nice every once in a while because it mixes things up. You do have to read A LOT but hey thats what college is all about! Go to class, read, and listen and you will do just fine. She is awesome!

In SOC 101 w/ Lorentzen you never had to read the book, and you got B in the class cuz lecture was great. SOC 362 you MUST read the books, but you can zone out in lecture- all tangents; not helpful. Go, make a good impression by talking once in a while (like after films, there will be a lot)! There is A LOT of reading, but it's all interesting.
Jeanne is one of the best profs I've had so far. She stimulates critical thinking in her students and her lectures inspire thought-provoking conversations in class. There is a lot of reading; however, the reading complements the lectures nicely. She is enthusiastic about teaching and creative in her delivery.
Loved her stories, always made it easy to remember concepts, and funny! Very helpful when approached after class, just wanted you to understand, very passionate. Kind of hard but never unfair. Got to know her personally (after the class was over, I'm not a suck-up) and she is an awesome person.
She has a great passion for her subject and it's relevance to modern day. don't get caught up in her personal beliefs, she loves to state them but wont judge you if you disagree with her. in fact let her know when you disagree. she is a wonderful professor who does not get enough credit.
Great teacher. Really cares about the students and likes to hear differing opinions to help expand thinking. Gives opinions but doesn't demand or ask you to believe them. Gives really good examples from all sides of sociology. Tests are harder but if you study your notes and read the book you will do fine. I barely studied and got at A.
Very difficult to follow. Graded on reading rather than what we talk about in class. Very unclear about what is expected from students.
I absolutely loved her! I was sick the whole semester, so she gave me Christmas Break to do my Term Paper. Yes she is tough, but she's fair! She challenges you because she wants you to learn. I love hearing her stories; it keeps me interested in class! Plus, I love her sassy attitude! :) I'm definitely taking her again.
GREAT EDUCATOR! Truly PASSIONATE about her subject and educating students about not only sociological topics and ideas but adequately applying them to present, real world situations! Love, love, love Jeanne! Take a challenge and take this class!
I took this class in the summer so it was only a 6 week course but the workload she had was overwhelming. I was taking another class as well so it was extremely hard for me to be able to do my best. Writing two 5 page papers, a 15 page term paper, and reading 100+ pages in 3 different books every two weeks was ridiculous.
A pretty intense course for 6 weeks. We read 3 entire textbooks cover to cover. Plan on spending several hours reading. However, if you actually do all of the reading and follow her paper guidelines she is a very fair grader. Responds quickly to emails. Good experience overall.
Horrible professor, impossible to get a hold of. Textbooks are outdated and thus, the information as well.
She was wonderful to listen to and was very passionate about the subject matter. The grade in the class could only be obtained by exams which I felt to be more difficult that they needed to be even though I feel that I knew the concept.
Honestly, if you like reading and memorizing multiple books about the subject take this class but if not, there's no power points to study from and you have no idea whats questions on the exams that will be on the test or from lecture. Although she is very passionate about the subject, lectures can be entertaining with her stories.
You will become an expert on anything and everything Jeanne Lorentzen.
Miss Lorentzen is very passionate and loves her job. However, I found her SO101 class EXTREMELY hard to do well in. I am an A student and am struggling to get a C. I have talked to her multiple times and do not get anywhere. I was hoping after hearing how bad the exams score were she would dropcurve one, it did not happen. Don't take this class.
I liked her as a person, but not as a teacher. She does not have power points, and her test are very hard. She basically just tells you to study four chapters. No study guide. I am an "A" student and i am struggling to pass.
One of the absolute worst teachers I've had. This is including high school and college. Tells stories all lecture long and does not prepare you for exams. Unfortunate
This professor was the worst professor I have ever had. The whole lecture she talks about herself, and the exams are on something completely different. She also only shares her opinions on everything she talks about. she is very inappropriate using profanity and pushing her beliefs on the students. I wouldn't recommend the professor.
Sit front row and she will love you. With that being said I'm surprised she's allowed to teach on a college campus. Completely unprofessional and is not responsible for helping students in the class. You have to teach yourself all the material.
Please do yourself a favor and try to take this course with a different teacher. Interesting topic, but its devasting to pay good money and get lackluster teaching. Lorentzon underperformed as both a professor and professional. Two thumbs down
Hands down one of the most frustrating teachers I've ever encountered. Does NOT teach the subject. Exams are terribly worded, and full of bogus questions. Teaching yourself the subject is essential to passing the course. Considering writing to the President of NMU about how poorly this class is instructed. Paying too much $$, for garbage teaching!
Four Words: Don't take this class -Thank me later
As long as I continue at NMU, I will never take another class with her teaching it. Horrid attitude and completely under performs!
Here's a brief overview of what to expect: -Hour and 40 minute lectures, where you learn next to nothing expect her life story. -Given no study guides in an exam based class. -There's a very good chance she will not answer your emails, ever. -And you're basically going to have to readteach yourself the course with any chance to pass.
Dr. Lorentzen is a very opinionated. Although the information is easy to learn, it is important that you learn it on your own. There are not any assignments, your grade is completely based off of exams. I would not recommend her as a teacher for this class.
WORST instructor I've had in 4 years years. Began the 1st day as though she was trying to win the approval of 15 year old's in a cussing contest. This lack of sophistication followed throughout. Lectures are her life story and are not relevant to exams. Exams cover random sections of 3 different books, w/o study guides. How can NMU keep her!?!?!?!?
EVERYONE that is bashing this awesome professor is only doing so because they have no idea how to teach themselves. Professor Lorentzen even tells us in the beginning that she cares more about showing us how to learn for in depth understanding instead of just memorizing bogus study guides in order to simply pass the test. Expect to truly learn...
Reads verbatim from powerpoints, attendance not mandatory, but has exam questions about what happened in class. Three papers for the semester, gives very vague guidelines on what to write about. Not helpful with paper critiques. Says one thing about one paper, you fix it for the next, and she doesn't like what you fixed/how you fixed it.
Likes to be called Jeanne; uses humor to engage her classes; can pass without going to class but she includes test questions that require you to know what happened in class.
I found this course to be pretty difficult. I would recommend going to class everyday & not skipping because she does put questions on the exams about things talked about in lecture. She is very funny, very nice, and easy to talk to especially outside of class if you need help with anything. Going to her office hours can be really helpful as well.
She doesn't really lecture much on the material, but mostly talks about how what we are learning can relate to her or us. This is fun to listen to, but you don't learn much in the lectures. She's a really sweet and funny person, but you will end up doing the work for yourself mostly.
Everything about this class you basically had to teach yourself. Her lectures are interesting but they have absolutely nothing to do with our text book or what any of our exams are on. So if you want to do good on any of the exams you have to teach yourself. I felt like I was in sex ed instead of gender and society.
Jeanne was a great teacher. Her class wasn't very hard so long as you pay attention in class. Grade was entirely based on the exams.
You HAVE to read the textbook in order to do well on her exams - if you do that, you should be okay. But MAKE SURE YOU READ THE TEXTBOOK! If you go over the learning objectives within those chapters you will do great on the exams.
Was very rude to students. Would call her a certain name if this sight permitted that. Found enjoyment in making students feel bad/uncomfortable/unsure. Regardless of the class I wold say she is a horrible person that makes her a very bad Prof. I wish NMU had the brain to fire her.
Lecture was very hard to follow and did not follow the textbook. Instead of going over concepts she more connected some (not many) ideas to her own family. She was kind of rude to students and has a ridiculous technology rule
Very fun teacher but doesnt cover material very well
If you read the book and study the vocab words you will easily pass her exams. She just rambles in lecture and talks about things that aren't on the exam. Exams are all online but she is terrible with technology so make sure your computer is updated because she can't help you. Sometimes she doesn't even know the passowrd to the exam.
Jeanne is by far my least favorite professor I've ever had. Outside of class, she is rude; one time she even raised her voice at student workers and publicly demeaned them. Just read the book and make sure you read the lecture slides she provides online. Don't waste your time going to class. If I'm lucky, I'll never have to come across her again.
This class could have been very interesting if it wasn't for Dr Lorentzen. She seems like a nice person who has good intentions, but she is a terrible professor. Every lecture is just her rambling and talking about her personal life rather than actually teaching you anything, so be prepared to read the book. She's also kinda unnecessarily rude.
lol i dropped her class
Jeanne is incredibly kind and incredibly wise. Everything about her screams amazing teacher! The class sessions are so casual, and she gets so invested in the success of her students that when I say her lectures are mandatory, it's more because you don't want to hurt her feelings by skipping because she's so nice!
The questions on the exams really make you think hard, and In class she mostly just talks about her personal life. Only cool thing about this class is the fact that you really dont need to show up but she will ask a few questions on the exams that she went over in lecture
I have never had a professor I've been so unimpressed by. The first 3 weeks of the semester the professor did nothing at all. Continuing on in the semester she would only post lectures 3 days before the exams, so you'd have to watch 3 or 4 lectures in a short time to learn some information. I can not believe how little effort she put into the class
This was an online class, but she didn't post anything for three weeks. When she did post, it was powerpoint lectures. Her exams were heavily based on the textbook, and are hard if you brush over the chapters. Beware of the term paper, as it is based off of books that are unavailable at the school bookstore. It's impossible to do without rambling.
Super fun, smart, kind, but pay attention and read.
Knowledge professor, lots of tests, make sure to read text!
