Go to class, take notes, read,
i loved her class, she is one of the easiest marker at ryerson
No Comments
great prof. seems to enjoy what she teaches
Seems to be really passionate about her subject.
kinda get lost when she's teaching, oh and some of the videos, so boring
hard marker, but come to class and you'll pass, i did!!
try to go to every class and take notes
ok marker but BORING BORING CLASS! take GEO106 instead
The best geo teacher.....u actually learn something!
Boring class, but easy.
M/C tests difficult. Attend lectures. She bell curves.
Easy marker. Attend lectures and you'll pass.
She will teach you absolutely nothing and bore you to death.
Terrible prof..we spent a whole class analyzing a picture... Don't think its a bird course, you'll have to do way more than you bargained for.
TERRIFIC prof and very interesting course! Definetly not a bird course (don't expect to just surf the Internet for 3hrs a week, like most of the class probably thought)!
She's great! The class is great because she doesn't burden me down with assignments at the same time I'm getting assignments from my required courses. GEO is a bit boring tho.
She's very very nice, but regional analysis is VERY VERY noring. It's a big sleeper, I did about 6 of the 100 readings from the outline, barely went to class and still got a B.
Very nice lady, easy going and flexible. course is boring and long. she makes it difficult because her teaching techniques are hard to understand. you get lost when it comes to tests and exams.
horrible experience, long boring lectures, very hard marker on assignment, always play tricks in the exams, don't listen to her hints, doesn't help at all!
Great class. Great prof. Took it in the summer. very interesting course. lots of discussion. very nice lady. If you ask questions. follow along, and take great notes, you are totally set.
shes ok
great teacher! she will extend deadlines with the students in mind. the tests are straight-forward from notes and over heads. goes out of her way to help you.
Very tricky Proff. You have to attend every lecture and if she knows that you are missing classes, your life is over. She teaches really well but try not to get her mad. Attend all the lectures and try to take as much notes as possible and you will get a good mark in this class
game me 0/30 on essay for not referencing it properly. Send her an email, she said I was implying she was just being picky. Went and talked to her, finally she gave in and let me hand it in again. Weird Lady.
i swear same thing happened to me, 2 years ago, she gave me 0/30 on my essay cause of the referencing-said she couldnt find them, she said i could redo a new one, had no time to do it cause 2md semester started, i passed with a D- and went on conditional cause of her. Same thing happend to my friend
Very good thecher, she listeng to you and understand you the cours it self is ok but she work with it nicelly, good class.
classes are soooooo boring, cant help but fall asleep in them.....but shes a very nice teacher who thinks about her students so tats cool...but dam the classes are boring >:(
I got a 0/30 on my paper too because of referencing and passed the course with a D-. After meeting with her a few times she said i coul resubmit it but it was 2nd semester and i was way too busy. She gave me a B+ then crossed it out and gave me 0! how crazy is that?!
I got a 0/30 on my paper too because of referencing and passed the course with a D-. After meeting with her a few times she said i coul resubmit it but it was 2nd semester and i was way too busy. She gave me a B+ then crossed it out and gave me 0! how crazy is that?!
Total scatterbrain! She tests you on material that she has never taught. Everytyhing I learned in this class was off the internet because she never discussed half of the info that she expects us to know. She also is sketchy with her marking, she once mark most of my answers wrong on a test and then said she must have been sleeping while marking it!
Easy marker. Tests are relatively easy. If you study the stuff she tells you to then you will ace the test. Flexible deadlines
GREATEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD!! She gives you tons of help when you ask and is just FANTASTIC!!
Jean is a great professor! She tells you exactly what to study for during mid-terms. As long as the readings on her website are done there shouldn't be a problem.
Great instructor. She made the material really interesting. The tests are fair, you just need to go to class and do all the readings. She is very accomodating to questions and discussion. She is very enthusiastic about the material and it helps to understand it. The course itself opens your eyes to a lot of global issues.
Her communication skills could use some work. Unfortunately her ego gets in the way of her ability to mark fairly.
Great Prof. Follow her lecture notes and what she tells you to study and you get an A. Ask her any questions, very flexible, easy to learn from.
shes a nice person and a nice teacher and likes to give away easy marks
Very nice lady. Some of the topics are tricky to understand, but she goes over them in class in detail so you understand whats going on. She's fair all round - a good class to take.
Honestly, I'm a very active Student Leader @ Ryerson, and Jeane is the Best Prof. I've ever had. I'm a Business Student, and she's honestly the most sincere, passionate and dedicated prof. I've ever had. No BS, all about the subject, and serioulsy learned this course. I'm so glad I took this. And this is not BS Prof Crap, its true student bs. h
Interesting course. Go to class and take extra notes in addition to the concept list she posts on website. If you take notes and pay attention in class you will get an A. Don't bother with text. Just take notes or lookup concepts on internet. Great prof, enthusiastic, loves life. I would definately recommend for student in any faculty.
Nightmare course, took this course in my final semester and had the worst experience. No textbook is ok, but everything based on websites that link to thousands of millions of materials, so you never know what you should study until you see the test/exam paper.
Please! If you want to be lost for the whole semester then take this class. She is one confusing professor I have ever taken. 4 out of 6 members from my group dropped the course before finals. Everything is on her website. Exam preparation notes are a nightmare,I warn u dont take any of her classes,U will regret it. She is nice but very confusing.
Great Professor. Go to class, take notes, and read the assigned readings and you will be fine. Devote a lot of attention to the essay, because this is what she marks the hardest.
What a horrible class. I hated it. She is very slow at marking and I wish I had never taken this complete waste of time. Oh and she marks extremely hard. The course itself is stupid. I regret taking it.
She's so passionate about what she does. I learned more from the course about the world than I ever knew. She was very generous with marks on tests and I loved how there was no text book. This course touched my heart. I truly believe that if everyone took this course, the world would be a better place. Attend class and you will do well.
She has designed the course in a way that fitted herself, not students. Very reluctant to learn something new and adamant with her knowledge. She must be flexible to learn and approve. Something that she doesnt know is wrong. Very very reluctant to accept her mistakes. Meeting at office hours is hell for her and treats rudely, literally. CONTD...
Attendance not mandatory but she does notice whose in and whose not. In class, she will have personal favourites (students) and only they will score. Hard hard essay markers. I have record of making mostly A or least A- but I made B in hers. Knowledge is not important but the presentation style is. Presentations are simply unfair. Very unfair.
write essays in APA, as she is more familiar with it. can't comment on office hours; never used them. she's nice, but i can tell theres a very mean side to her. got a poor mark on presentation, but thats cuz it did suck. fair marker on essays. i just wasnt interested in the course at all, but still got a decent mark. if ur interested, it's an ez A
Class looks decent and nice from the lectures and talks with the prof. She tends to have no patience and be super harsh when grading. You could have a super nasty surprise with your final grade , even if you think you're fine. Great prof to chat with...but..don't ever take Geographies of Health.
good to talk to, little harsh on the marking, overall fair
overall good course and prof! essays were marked very fairly, as well as the (midterm) exam. all in all it was a positive xperience!
Confusing. The class would have been great with another prof. My biggest complaint is that she does not use blackboard and all her course info is on a VERY poorly designed website that creates confusion. Adding to the confusion is her lack of clarity. Assignments had almost zero structure. Avoid her, you'll be glad you did.
I took this course as a challenge and boy was it!! Jeanne was by far the most interesting instructor at Ryerson. The course helped me open my eyes to many global issues and I'm grateful for taking it. The class was informative, interesting and down right the BEST course I have ever taken before.
she makes the course seem like a breeze, WAY too much work for a liberal and makes you read stupid BORING (some long) articles.. this course actually requires you to know a lot about history and what's going on around the world to actually excel. she's very blunt and can be very harsh with marking.. i should have taken spanish.
This prof seemed reasonable at the beginning of the semester, but she marked inconsistently and inaccurately. As the semester went on she became rude and unhelpful. Marks the essay and exam extremely hard. Overall boring class and way too much reading for a liberal. The old ratings for this prof are inaccurate. AVOID!
1 of the wrst profs i ever had. she does not use BB. her outline is complicated and messy so is her 10 year old website with that nasty comic font, really? she is a harsh grader although she did give extra 10% for the whole course if the project was one of the top 5. other than that, i find her unreasonable. google the course 2 check the course
Loved her! The class materials are infact useless, but interesting.no textbook. nothing serious about the major project, just be fansy and use technology, she'll give you an A. Absolutely bumped up my GPA.
Class was extremly boring...she can talk for an hour explaing a sentence...i was not able to stay focus in class...but she marked fairly..ended up with an A + in the class...
Not a difficult course by any means. Very straightforward - yet classes are very slow and boring. Two hours feels like two days.
LOVED HER! If you study from the study guide you'll do really well on the tests. She covers a lot in one week but its a good class. She likes participation - good discussion is required or material is dry. The exam was what you expected (summary of the entire course) and she lets you do what you want for your project
Honestly I had her for a summer program for 7 classes 6hrs. It was an amazing class,we had some lively discussions, 6hrs just blew by.I recommend her nice teacher she's really passionate about the subject and her class really changed my perspective of the world.
I was blown away on the first day of class because she was polite and very passionate about what she was teaching. Furthermore, she had very interesting lectures, from which many discussions were stimulated and led to many interesting viewpoints. Overall, Dr. Maurer is highly recommended if you want an A+, moreover if you want to really learn!
I was very surprised about how interested i had become in the geography of the global village by the end of the semester. I just wanted this course as a credit to fulfill my elective requirement but Prof. Maurer's enthusiasm about this subject and her style of presenting and teaching it made me want to take another one of her classes next semester
In my opinion she's a bad teacher. We have one hour lectures dedicated to what must be on the essay and how she wants it to be. 2 weeks in she completely forgets about and doesn't mention it again. Then when you hand in the essay she completely criticizes your works and you performed poorly. She's selfish, unclear, and forgets what she talks about.
She's an ok prof. The midterms were easy but she is really unclear about what she expects for the essay. There's no textbook and her online lecture notes are useless. Overall I wouldn't recommend taking her course.
I took this class out of necessity and I didn't expect to like it. It's actually a great course, mainly because of prof Maurer. If you attend class (pay attention & take notes)/do the readings, you'll get at an A. She really cares about her students learning and is always available for extra help if you just ask or go in during her office hours.
This is a great course if u want to learn some things but its a lot of work and hard to get a 90 ..this is why. Two term tests, an essay(which is marked extremely unfairly) and a final exam(which contains yet another essay). I was hoping to get a 90 but it looks like its impossible because of the amount of work that needs to be done.
Overall a wonderful woman! I've had Jeanne before and love how enthusiastic she is about geography. She teaches the course well. It isn't always an easy mark but as long as you give her what she asks then it is a guaranteed A!
The course is boring but She has a kind heart prof. The course is pretty boring and her midterm reviews are completely different then what she ask on the midterm. but she will help you if you are confuse or if you ask her to double check your work to see if you ans the question appropriately.
She's a very generous marker on the midterms and final, but don't be fooled -- the major assignment is marked incredibly hard. Feedback on this assignment was harsh and non-constructive, but overall she is a decent professor that definitely enjoys her job. 7/10.
My favourite Geo prof. She's just great. I can see why some might not like her though.
AWFUL CLASS. So terribly boring...yes she is enthusiastic about technology but she does a terrible job getting her students engaged. Really likes to shut down ideas for project proposal..does not take the time to really talk to students - probably cause she teaches so many different classes! SHE NEEDS TO RETIRE!!
Professor Maurer is very passionate about health geographies. If you have any interest in global health issues you will find her lectures interesting. Attendance is mandatory as her midterms are based off the lectures so be sure to take good notes. There is no textbook for this course. Very approachable. Fair marker, but picky about referencing.
Good prof, enthusiastic about the subject. No textbook, everything's online. Provides study guides explaining what you need for the midterm and final. Main components: Research project, midterm, final: 30/30/30. Always available for office hours, and very helpful and polite 1 on 1. Not a difficult course, just don't be lazy and expect to do well.
Professor Maurer is very nice. She is knowledgeable about the course material and is very laid back. Her midterms are a piece of cake if you prepare accordingly. She marks very hard on the midterm assignment. The entire class did well on the group presentation component. Her final assignment instructions lacked clarity. Overall a decent prof.
Provides link for required and RECOMMENDED readings and videos. She tests on those as well. So what is supposed to be recommended is actually REQUIRED. Class was absolutely boring and VERY strict on lateness. Did not review anything for midterm and expects A LOT from just a few classes. Overall not impressed and would not recommend this class.
I can agree with the comments below regarding this class. take not that it was an intensive class. she does ramble a lot, most of which never appeared on the exam. she is kind and is flexible on what she wants. the key is of course is to take good notes, since there is no textbook. She should also convert her notes online to power-points.
Jeanne is a nice lady however needs to get on board with modern teaching strategies. In 2013 it's pretty unacceptable not to have slides clearly outlining terms ESPECIALLY when she is so particular about wording on tests and assignments. This would definitely improve the course but until then, stay away.
She is a very kind lady who is passionate about what she teaches. However, you must listen to every word she says to properly format your essay ideas. The midterms were fair and so was the final. If you pay attention to her and attend every class, you'll do fine.
nice and passionate teacher, quick replies to emails. Attendance is key to scoring a high mark. She is a very picky marker but she is kind enough to add bonus questions. I understand the whole outdated teaching methods but I felt like I really learned because she gave lectures which teach you more than a prof reading off slides will
great teacher. She may not use most modern tech, but makes up for it by being super passionate about her subject. I'd rather sit and listen to someone who LOVES what they teach over watching a PPP any day! She's a very fair marker and is very approachable and helpful. Anyone who can't do well in her class needs to evaluate why they're in school.
Interest level during lectures fluctuated depending on the topic but she is so passionate that I mostly paid attention. She gives you a lot of options on the midterm. No clear outline on her projects but she marks based off your clarity and effort. Got an A- but an A is very achievable. Didn't buy the textbook just borrowed from the library.
Good Lady but not a good teacher. Very disorganized lectures and does not clearly communicate course expectations. Does not use power points and most of her articles that she uses in her lecture are purely plagiarized. She also has a very poor choice of words and sometimes her statements are very offensive. I would not recommend this professor.
She has been teaching this course for quite a while, therefore her teaching skills are obsolete. She needs to realize that this is 2014 and traditional lecturing style will not do any good. I do not recommend any classes with her.
Beware...comes across as easy but expects too much. She broadcasts your abstracts for the entire class to see, whether you did really good or terrible
Despite the negative comments, she is a passionate prof who is very knowledgeable about the course material. However she does tend to ramble on in class so it's hard to understand her point exactly. Her personal website is also a little difficult to navigate. Regardless, it was a decent class. Tip: ALWAYS check your emails from her. Always.
This professor is way too far behind with the times to be teaching a course about cyberspace. She is absolutely insufferable, rude, condescending, and unqualified to teach students about how the internet functions. Says things like "the facebook..." and "text your friends!" LOL. She personifies the reason Ryerson has such a terrible reputation.
She was great. gave 100% on all exams because i just said things exactly how she said them in class
I found this course tricky at first. But this course was worth it especially with her. Do all the study guide questions she gives and you will do well on the tests. The final was an essay so prepare it ahead of time. She is extremely passionate about the topic and marks pretty fair. Also attend her lectures and do all the readings!
ONLY TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN: the environment, political issues, poverty and the economy. One my my favourite profs, she's very passionate about this course. She babbles on a lot during lectures, enjoys class participation, gives you a clear and organized study guide online.
An amazing class. Attending class will definitely get you an A. The material is not difficult. Most of the lectures are allocated towards the project with respect to any questions students have with regards to the project. She does this constantly and makes sure that you know what you are doing for the project. The project was worth 40%.
Great prof IMO, enjoyed the course even though I didn't think I would. She marks tests fairly easily, often giving as many marks as possible instead of seeking to take marks off. A warning though, she seems to mark the essays a lot harder then the tests (though I cant complain as it ended up being removed from my final grade anyway, very nice)
Very nice lady. Must attend lectures to do good. 2 tests(MC+short ans) and in class essay about 2000 words. but you get cheat sheet. Tests were the best. The easiest ever, example if the answer was australia and you wrote continent she would give you half a mark for sure. The course overall was easy as long as you read everything on her website.
She's clear and concise in class, If you skip a lot things get confusing. She doesn't use blackboard, she uses her own site and the text is online. Attend class and your good to go.
Very hard to understand.
An amazing professor. Love her!
Overall, she's a nice lady who seems to care about her students. Her tests are a bit on the tough side especially her short answer or essay type questions. The essay she assigned on analyzing the genuine progress indicator in a specific nation wasn't too hard but it is difficult to start unless you truly understand the course material. Study hard!
She is an amazing person and amazing prof :)
Amazing prof. I just finished GEO108 with her and im so happy I took this lower level liberal. She is very kind, always responds to emails, and is there for you. I found her lectures & the overall course very interesting. I wish she taught more lower level liberals. She is very passionate and gives a laugh here and there. Thank you Ms. Maurer!
She is very cool and amazing. Teaches with a passion. Don't expect the average prof who teaches from power point. She uses her website to teach which you may find it interesting to take notes from. She is also very relational to students. Her test/quizzes do reflect what is taught and the readings. You have to attend class in order to understand.
She uses the class as a platform to rant about global warming and the need for ecological reform. She's pretty awesome, and hilarious.
I did the 2 week version of the course (7 hours a day twice a week). She will go on rants about global warming and how crazy some companies are. She is very eager to teach and answer questions. She will spell everything out for you. The way she marks her tests is the catch. She is very specific with wording and if its not the same words she uses GG
Really amazing professor! She is very passionate about what she teaches and will try her best to engage the class. She is a really fair marker too, which is always a plus! She will give you the marks for what you produce. I recommend taking this class!
The best prof ever.
She is a nice professor who is really good at teaching. However, i found her tests and marking methods a bit tough. This could be due to the fact that i don't have a lot of interest in the elective i am taking.
I can't say enough great things about Jeanne. All she asks is respect from her students and she will help you out in amazing ways. For example just the other day I got a 63% on my midterm worth 30%... I went to speak to Jeanne in office hours, we went over my test and she boosted my grade by 24%. Literally. She is the sweetest little lady, easy A.
All time favourite professor. If you GO TO CLASS and pay attention you will do well. Memorize a few good details for your essay answers on the tests and you're good to go. She loves discussions and respects what students have to say. Her classes are a really nice change from boring slide shows.
Jeanne is an example of a prof who cares about her students, and the subject she teaches. Her course website is very well organized and helpful. No textbook, readings are all online. Exams were fair, and the final project was actually kinda fun. A little slow with her marking, but she's very generous with grades. She wants her students to do well.
One of thesweetest, most caring profs at Ryerson. She is an amazing lady who cares about her students and is more than willing to meet up outside of class to discuss things with students. She is a more than fair grader and her tests are not hard as long as you follow the study guide really well. Would take her again and recommend you do the same.
Very nice to students, however, she doesn't post her lectures. She doesn't have a course set up on D2L, she uses her own website to post. Readings and lectures are dry and boring. She always get off topic, and end up talking about trump. Very tough grader as the exam is all short answers. "study guide" doesn't make sense if you don't go to class
I love her. She really draws my interest to geography courses. Very knowledgeable about her own material. Her study guide is really helpful for tests and exams. You have to GO TO CLASS! The material is easy, but you have to physically be there to understand. She does not post lecture notes online, but taking your own notes will be enough for tests.
A little unorganized and gets distracted talking about other things during lecture, but very funny and nice. course material is interesting and she teaches it well
She's extremely opinionated and won't hesitate to interrupt you, even in the middle of your final presentation, to shove her opinion down your throat. She knows a lot about the course's subjects but is always looking for a particular answer to questions that aren't black and white. Also, she complained CONSTANTLY that nobody came to class.
WOW I Really like her teaching! She's super passionate about what she is teaching. She'll give you the questions before the midterm exam. One individual/group project, super easy and one bring home final! What a sweet and smart lady! Take it before she retires!
Great prof with funny lectures... she really cares about her students
If you don't go to class, you'll never understand her lectures. She has her own website that has blobs of infos posted. She uses email a lot.. and often gets off the topic many many times. She's a tough grader, wants your point to be proven and be exact or else she'll bomb you with questions. The course name should be changed to "Intro to McLuhan"
I have taken many classes with professor Maurer and can honestly not say enough good things about her. She's funny, kind, warm and a good prof. She makes you work for your grade and is respected by everybody in her class. She has her own website, does not use a textbook and her classes are always interesting. Would defs take again. Total gem.
Really passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. Makes you want to come to class and be inspired to learn ! BUT it's not a bird course u have to work for it. She tends to go on rants sometimes (very cute). Make sure to clarify the study guide questions. Very laid back with final project guideline. One of the most inspirational profs ever !!
Jeanne is the best. She is a sweet, kind prof and cares about her students. Her courses are not easy, but they can be if you pay attention. Her study guides are literally the exam so memorize that and you're good to go. Go see her in office hours - she will see you care about the course and want to do well which will help. Very fair grader. A++
Ms. Maurer was great! Her lectures are interesting and she tries to keep everyone engaged. Attendance is really important and she often gives answers to tests word for word if you're paying attention. Her test reviews are literally the same questions that are on the test.. couldn't be more clear, easy A+.
She is very sweet and kind. She knows a ton about geography and is very passionate about teaching. However, her marking is extremely tough. Students in her class put in lots of effort and still ended up receiving low marks. Get ready to take lots of notes because without it you will not do well. THIS IS NOT A BIRD COURSE.
Jeanne Maurer is a really nice prof when you are on her good side, she is a pretty straight up teacher. She once said some stuff in class that surprised me so do your homework. There is a lot of reading to do in this course, but be like me I didn't read and did notes last minute and made it out. She inspires you to make change in the world.
hit or miss, super insensitive (uses the term eskimos, not informed about aboriginal terminology in general) bashes business and tech, super rude and judgemental to her students.
Volatile mood. Blames students for not doing well and not understanding her very unclear instructions. Sends very unprofessional and rude emails.
Marked super heavy on this huge project, she doesn't give clear instructions on what to do just gives you an overview. There is not guidelines on her rubric or the assignment. Final Exam was marked extremely hard. Don't expect a high grade in this course
She's not even that bad! Lots of readings and videos. One thing is that she gets off topic and A LOT! She is very well aware of the material she lectures, and is very opinionated. If you are late, get ready for a dirty look! Overall, just do the readings and watch the videos, and you'll be fine.
This class was an accelerated one month summer course and went by QUICKLY. The tests were kind of tough, so you must pay attention in class. The tests were pretty straight forward with either the choice of multiple choice or a short answer question and you had to do 30 questions out of approx 40. The final exam was super easy, just do research.
Amazing prof. She essentially teaches the management side of science. Excellent lectures!
Started out the first midterm with a C-. Luckily the TA taught us the tricks on how to succeed in the class. Got an A on the second midterm and finished with an A on the final exam. The material is not difficult but you have to read and take notes to do well in the class. She should have given us the email of the TA but she didn't.
Took GEO-108 this fall. The final grades were released a couple of days ago. Finished with an A-. This class is not difficult but you need to keep up with the readings and material. Once you could do that, its a relatively easy course. Its a bit a bird course as you need to spend the time for the readings and to review them before an evaluation.
THIS IS NOT A BIRD COURSE. This class is very easy if you do the readings. During the second midterm, half the questions were related to hopwoods paper. Thus if you didn't read that, good luck getting a good mark on the second midterm. The main point: Do the readings and you will ace the class very easily. Otherwise good luck!
The main reason why many do not like Jeanne is that there are a bit of readings in the class. However if you speak to the people who actually did the readings, the tests are a piece of cake. Jeanne's one hour tutorial every week on help for the essay is also very helpful. Got a great mark in the class. Will be taking GEO-605 in the winter of 2019!
Its a surprise that she is teaching this class this year. Its been years since she taught GEO-507. I'm happy as she made that class relatively easy. Very easy midterm and essay. Excellent professor! Hope to see her in other upper liberals.
Love it when she rambles. But overall the class is quite interesting. Tests are easy when you do the readings but if you do not, you will be oblivious to the questions.
Great!!
First time I took a class with Jeanne Maurer. Aside from the readings, it is a very easy and straight forward class. Many would skip the one hour review session each week in which she would answer all questions related to any material. Attend all classes and its an easy A. She does this with all of the other classes. Can't wait to take GEO-605!!!!!
I had Jeanne for GEO-605. It was a relatively easy class. One midterm (30%), One Group project (40%) and one TAKE HOME EXAM (30%). Easy A. I feel bad for the students this year as there she is only teaching one section. Normally she has two sections she teaches.
Unlike the rest of the people who commented for GEO-605, The mark i finished with was an A+. Again it was an easy class. What I love about her is that if she has two sections, you can hope in either one of them despite them being fully booked. Just ask. She teaches both section and finishes each at the same point. Amazing teacher and well organized
Her tests are fair and she is very approachable if you have a question after class. The course I took was very reading-heavy, but if you read and watch the videos she tells you to, you will have no problem on the tests and exam. The research paper was reasonable as well. Overall a great prof!
How to get an A 1 - Never Skip a class she teaches 2 - Read the papers she assigns and take notes in class 3 - On those 1 hour days, ask her any questions related to content in paper or lectures as those days are usually review or project discussion days 4 - Show up for the test and ace it! Love her attitude and perspectives on Trump!
Apparantly this class is 80% similar to her other class which is GEO-605, the difference is that there are group presentations in GEO-411. Overall a good class, but not easy. She really makes you think using an ecosystem approach! Very interesting class!
Goes off on tangents. Reallly boring class. Awful marker. Dont do it.
I love this class! The course is very nicely laid out with the prof being amazing!. The TA for this class is also very nice and understanding. Although this is an elective, since I aced the midterm, I have dedicated more time towards this class than my other classes just to see how far I can end up. This class actually motivates you to do good!
Hard to achieve a good grade if you get lost in a subject. Very nice prof but overall a tough class, considering her other elective was okay.
Reccomend for any first-years who need an elective. 108 was a joy, Professor is very knowledgable and makes class interesting.
Very accommodating and kind. went out of the way to help me at one of the lowest points of my life , no questions asked
She changed last minute the format of the final exam, rather than short answer one essay question. I find it very disrespectful because it changes the difficulty of the exam. If I knew it was going to be a final essay I would not have taken this course but she was not clear at all. VERY DISAPPOINTED.
She's one of the best profs you can get for a GEO/EUS program. most other professors are like robots, but she's really funny and is passionate about the topics covered in the class. As long as you study the material on the study guide you'll be fine, and dont over think the questions.
One of my favourite profs. Super knowledgeable and passionate about the content, nice and approachable. Lectures diverted from outlined course content but still very informative and stimulating. Weird formatting of "lectures" (her website) but just study it and you'll do fine. Midterm, essay, group project and exam. Would recommend!
Very knowledgeable prof. Many readings and videos. She changed the final exam to an essay question last minute.
Jeanne Maurer is a great prof who cares for her students. Show up to lectures and make notes of important things she says because it'll help on the midterm and exam. She really wants her students to do well and hopefully take away a few things from the course.
Her lectures were only two hours long but they were very boring, she often went on tangents & complained about things unrelated to the course content. I believe the final exam was supposed to have short answer questions but she changed it to an essay exam which I thought was unfair. Only take her if you're truly interested in the subject material.
Horrible professor. She can't lecture for her life, is very unorganized, and speaks to you like you are experts in Geography and already know the content. She needs to understand this is a liberal and not everyone has a background in Geography. Barely passed and left this course feeling frusturated. Just try to cram the study guide and try to pass.
Her grading is confusing and she goes on really long tangents. Her classes are long and boring and her website is severely outdated. She has a sense of humour but I'd prefer a stricter professor with a clearer grading criteria rather than her class. Be careful with your assignments as you can be an A+ student in other classes but not in this one.
Get ready to study in this class. She is awesome as a a prof. Lecture can be draggy and long. However, grading is fair. My memorable experience was her favourite quote "For Heaven Sakes". She demonstrated her knowledge on Environmental Planning and is explained clearly throughout the term. However, be ready to study and earn for ur mark.
Lovely Prof! Although the midterm was difficult, the group project and final is reasonable.
Grades really rough on students but not as bad as mentioned by other students. Group project and Finals can be solid and reasonable if you put the effort.
Respected prof but midterm was really tough. She is very thoughtful and caring as she usually asks the class if they understood the materials covered during lecture.
Be sure to attend lectures and take notes as they will appear on midterm and finals. She is very knowledge and does know her stuff in this course. Well taught!
If you listen in class then you will understand the materials. There is a group project that involves writing a group proposal. This can be timely as they needs to be a lot of researching and gathering group members to contribute their portion. Her grading is fair and reasonable no doubt. I will miss her as she is very caring among students.
No D2L involved. Students will use her website to access course materials. She is very knowledgeable in this field. A hidden gem and true expert! Be sure to raise your hand and ask questions in class.
She is lovely and very experienced in this field of study. Great prof overall and loves to help students who are struggling.
Group project weigh 40% of final grade. She is a fair grader and lecture is amazing. She really wants the students to put in the effort by showing support.
Dr. Maurer is VERY passionate about what she teaches. She's extremely well educated on all subjects. I wanted to take this course to get an easy pass but I ended up getting so into the subjects and actually really caring about what she's teaching. Never thought I'd end up with an A+ lol
Theres a mandatory group meeting for the project. She is reasonable when grading the group assignment and finals. Her notes are important so be sure to attend her lectures by all means. Also gives good feedback on improvements.
An organized professor who shows passion in this field of study. Always want her students to do well in the group assignment and finals. Very outstanding!
Professor Maurer is a hidden gem. Always clarify the rubric assignment. Pretty good for a liberal course. Easy A
Show up and ask questions. Don't just read her online content!
Excellent prof! Always demonstrate her knowledge by getting into the topic. She answers every student's question that were asked in class. Always remember to take good notes for the project and final exam. She gives a lot of in class time for the major assignment discussion.
She does a good job of explaining concepts and ideas in class in simplified, easy to understand ways. she repeats info so everyone has a chance to get down what shes saying. Genuinely cares about her students
Simply one of the best professors at Ryerson
Work load was above and beyond. Instructions were very dry and wasn't explained clearly. Dr Maurer does engage with students during break time.
Absolutely the most stunning prof I've ever had. Jeanne is really approachable during the term and clarifies the major assignment. Overall she manages to teach the course well and cares for her students which was breathtaking. It's rare to find someone as dedicated and outstanding as Jeanne.
Jeanne is an average prof. Her classes are generally interesting but get ready to read a whole lot more than any other class you're taking. You can tell she's been in the field for a while since she knows what she's talking about.
Jeanne chose some interesting articles and videos to give some context to the larger issues presented in lecture. However, some of the material was a slog and often did not contribute to a greater understanding or a better test performance. There was some confusion about the details of the final exam report, with a ton emails being sent to clarify.
she barely explains stuff in class and once she starts talking on something particular the lecture would end and nothing would be clear. She uses her own website which is not at all organized and causes a lot of confusion.
Her lectures are clearly unprepared and disorganized. Jumps from topics at inconsistent speeds. Fair marker though with amazing help sessions.
Online class due to COVID: Lecture heavy and based off her website which is not laid out properly. Not clear and very confusing terms and definitions. Tests are very hard and not just ctrl+f if doing online. Very picky marker - wrote a 23 pager with detailed sources and got a 50%. Had office hours through zoom - if you don't attend you will fail.
Dr. Maurer is an absolute gem. She truly cares about her profession, and it reflects in her teaching abilities. It is quite a content heavy course, and be mindful that she does look for specific answers for essays and tests. Her course should not be taken as a bird course.
Jeanne is very understanding. Her lectures are fun and engaging
Prof. Maurer is a good professor, but her course website content is extremely unorganized and hard to navigate. Be prepared for tons and tons of articles to read! Do not take this course if you think it'll be easy! Be prepared to work for your mark
Uses her own website rather than D2L which took some time to get used to, but wasn't bad. Hilariously frank about issues in the world that makes lectures fun sometimes. Lectures get kind of disorganized and sometimes you have no idea what she's talking about and if you get to choose between essay or MC exam, choose essay. Her MC are awful.
Jeanne is a lovely person and will answer questions whenever you have them. Her website needs to be retired, Its hard to navigate and was the worst part of the course. Her MC tests are VERY hard, if you have a choice choose short answer over MC (I know, I was shocked too!) shes funny and knows her stuff. Not a bird course- you gotta work for it
Jeanne was a great prof! She definitely struggled to adjust to online teaching but after a couple lectures she found a method that worked best for everyone and it worked well. Some assignments were a little unclear but shes very accessible and will easily clarify for you, overall learned a lot from her course and would love to have her again!!
She is a very nice person. Very knowledgable on the topic and will answer questions whenever you have them. She gives lots of opportunities for students to meet with her for help on the course project. Her website needs to retire, it's too hard to navigate and unorganized. Overall she is a very good professor. But the course is a lot of work.
rough attitude, don't ever ask her ques in emails!
Very sweet and nice prof but her tests are so hard, even online.
Not bad but her website is super confusing. I prefer D2L and did not like navigating her website. Tests are pretty straightforward as her study guide helps you. I didn't go and still got a good mark. She's slightly passive-aggressive. Super helpful that the final exam was optional so it was a stress that I didn't need. Proceed with slight caution.
Very passionate about the geographies of Canada. Very knowledgable. She is funny, not very online savvy, but I give her credit. Website needs some tweaking, as she does not use D2L. MC exams are tough, but not if you know your stuff and use the study guides.
The professor is awesome! Thoroughly enjoyed listening to her lectures and reading the course material.
terrible, goes off topic, course website is completely disorganized and was hard for me to understand what was important. lots of reading DO NOT TAKE
Nice professor but her tets were so poorly worded. Very hard to study, especially with her own website. Adds trick questions so if you understand the topic you might still get the questions wrong.
Multiple choice quizzes are tricky and difficult to complete. Instinctive answers make you second-doubt yourself and turns out your answers were right the first time. She is a SJW and does not clearly follow the class schedule.
Her multiple choice tests are terrible. Confusing wordings that trick you rather than test your knowledge from the course. There were no alternative choices given for MC but if so, choose the alternative option.
Uses a very old website to upload class content. 2 tests 25% project 30% optional exam 20%. she gives a study guide for the test but some answers are only in class. very confusing website with random links just going everywhere. trying to find an answer is like a puzzle.
Terrible person inside and out. Was very rude and all I have to say is avoid taking her classes. Her feedback is so unprofessional and un decent. I was shocked to see a prof speak like that. Her lectures are so uninteresting.
Review - Jeanne Maurer was not the best but she was fair. She uses an outdated website for posting course material and outline which makes it difficult to navigate and learn. Her 2 midterms were fair but sometimes there will be an error with the questions and very tough on grading. Be prepared to do a lot for this course. Overall, not that bad.
Not a bird course. Her website is awful and so hard to navigate and she posted my final grade wrong twice. You'll have to attend her lectures DONT rely on the website. Tests are difficult, but the assignment is graded much more leniently. Jeanne is knowledgeable and funny, but it's a time-consuming course. I don't recommend.
By FAR the most unnecessarily hard marker I have ever come across in university. Avoid this course and prof at all circumstances.
This course wasn't that easy. If you want to do well you need to attend class and listen carefully to the lectures. She teaches off her website and doesn't use slides. The wording on tests is pretty tricky as well, so you need to have a good understanding of the material. She's a relatively easy marker though.
Thoroughly enjoyed her lectures. Very knowledgeable on the course material. Not for everyone but would recommend if you are willing to put in the work.
Only take her courses if you are very very passionate about that course topic, or else it will be hard to follow along. She is very knowledgeable and talks, but her lectures can be boring. Take notes on everything she says in class, her website is very hard to navigate. I found her feedback to be a bit unprofessional at certain times.
She is a bit of SJW and goes off topic but over all interesting lectures.TAKE THROUGH NOTES IN CLASS. She teaches off an extremely difficult to navigate and out of date website which doesn't make sense without her lectures. Her tests can be confusing and is designed to trick you and she is also a very tough marker for the assignment.
This professor is quite strict. Her course materials are disorganized, scattered all over the place. She grades the final assignment essay harshly and behaves unprofessionally. I would say don't take this course with her. I did very well on both midterms but she gave a very bad mark, and my overall mark went straight down.
just avoid her class
Avoid her class
Never take this course if shes the prof. Her 30% essay was only marked based on referencing. Nothing about the actual analysis in the paper. She expects students to be professionals in a field they only just learned about. Shes very knowledgeable and lectures can be interesting, but her horrible grading absolutely isn't worth it. Just stay away.
Terrible professor. Her tests are not bad if you watch the videos and go through her website, but the 30% essay is just awful. As someone mentioned, she marks the essay solely on your sources rather than the actual essay. IF YOU WANT TO DO WELL ON THE ESSAY DO NOT HAVE YOUR OWN OPINION AND SOMEHOW FIND THE SOURCES SHE WANTS. She is very picky.
The course itself is quite interesting. The materials were also engaging. But the professor is very rude, doesn't know how to operate d2L and blames that later on you if you point that out. Her feedback is unprofessional and vague. She also expects you to show up for her lectures, but she cancels them when she needs to with very short notice.
25% MC test x2, 30% report, optional 20% exam. Disorganized D2L, doesn't follow outline, cancels classes, sends extra readings/vids. Absurd tests designed to trick you w/ questions about trivial details from a 200 page report that she skimmed over once. Goes off on tangents & rants about politics/attendance to students that actually attend. Avoid!
This prof is somehow capable of making an easy course difficult. Lectures are 20% course content and 80% ranting about Trump. Assigns 200-page readings, TV episodes, and hour-long documentaries that are all tested. Likes to heavily twist the wording of questions during tests. If you are looking for a high grade, Avoid this class/prof.
exams were hard and for the final assignment her feedback focused on apa or “ too old reference” i still got a A on the assignment but class avg was 35 since a lot of ppl got 0 for using chatbgt and having nonexistent references. test avgs were in the 60's. 2 exams 1 essay (2k words) or presentation (25-30 slides) and optional final essay form
Awful prof material was the most bland boring thing ever, kinda rude and condescending too.
rudest prof i've ever had
Take another professor for this course. It's meant to be a bird course and this professor doesn't teach it that way. The tests weren't bad but the final essay was brutal. She's a harsh marker. Avoid!
Avoid her at all cost!!
One of my favorite professors in the university. Such a sweetheart. Very understanding and caring, she really doesn't want you to fail. Course was made up of 2 term tests and one take home essay. She gives you 70% of the test questions before hand and the rest are all from the provided material. Wish I had room to take more of her courses.
Hi all... avoid her at all cost...
Genuinely the worst course I've taken in university. How is this course harder than 4 years of eng courses? She spends all of class ranting about the most random topics and then grills you on the quizzes. You have no hope, every review above 1 star is lying and I'm convinced they're all just her on alt accounts. Take the other prof while you can.
I never wrote a review before, but Professor Maurer has earned my respect. Genuinely one of the only few professors that cares about their students and the topics that are taught. I have taken multiple courses with her online and can't recommend her class enough. The grading criteria is very fair, and straight forward!!
Do NOT take this professor! If you do, don't say I didn't warn you. All of the 5 star reviews on here are written by her.
Do not take this prof no matter what. It may seem like an easy grade booster but it's not, lectures are not very informative, test questions have tricky wording, a lot of required reading and documentry watching that you will be tested on, and a really harsh grading scheme for the essay; giving 0 for any outside source automatically. Please avoid.
Wanting a bird course? Wanting A easy course that will boost your GPA? Looking for a ONLINE course you can easily pass without struggle/studying ? Well KEEP LOOKING further my friends this is not the course you want to take with this prof.
Hard marker but solid professor
A lot of the questions are given ahead of time so make sure to stay on top of them
