She's a really nice teacher...but u better write in the style she likes or else u'll pretty much end up with a B+...I kno im getting an A in her class

excellent english teacher
A very nice professor, who cares about her students too. Very approachable and will listent to what you have to say. Fair grader. Recommended.
You have several papers to write, but the work load is pretty light. She is very nice, she listens to everyone's opinion, and she is definitely always there to help.
She is too nice (yes, a teacher can be too nice). I felt that she has a huge urge to please her students and does not give objective feedback. Her class didn't offer me challenges
There's some work to be had in this class but not at all overly difficult. Some at-home and some in-class essays -- don't get on her bad side and it's an OK class.
Thought she came off very easy. Got an A- but I deserved an A. Doesnt use a computer so shes a bit elusive outside of class. Just a bunch of essays and easy 3 question quizzes. Comes off as a hippie liberal! Enjoy
Comes off a little weird, told students to refer to her as "Jeanne", tough grader too( I got on her bad side), I felt like I deserved mostly A's and got B's, workload wasnt bad though
she sucks and picky and super boring.
she is very nice and explains things well. but you can tell she could be nasty if u piss her off. i think she grades grammer more than content in her essays

Very easy class. Three papers ( only 4 pgs each) and two in class tests...very easy. Class discussions are very boring and she spoke to us like we were taking ESL classes. Didn't grade a student's paper because he "used too many BIG words"
she is a very very sweet and nice woman, always willing to help.I felt the class was too easy and she talks to us like we are in ESL, but hey, this is CUNY so what do you expect? Easy class, very nice professor, highly recommend her.Lets you hand in essays late with NO penalty!!awsome.just some reading assigned for homework
She is very sweet and if you do get in her bad side she will get angry. Her dicussions are boring, somtimes I felt like I was in a AA program because we did a lot of group work. Overall she is a nice teacher, and I do not think she speaks to the class like we in ESL class. Also do not fall back on Cuny, because they are hard teachers at Baruch.
I learned plenty in this class, and would love to take it again if only the powers that be would adjust the curriculum count for all of us who are in the manual sciences. I want everyone to know that this professor once served cheese and crackers to us on the lawn, even though it was not a "party day." I think that's enough reason to sign up.

She is an above average professor. The discussions are boring but not a complete waste of time. Gives a lot of quizzes, which are very ez if you read. I expected an A, but an A- isnt so bad anyway.
Well...yeah the class was very boring, i felt sorry cuz she tried too hard to make the class interesting but it wasn't...we went once on a trip to the art exhbit in baruch, the work load is not much, except when she grades the essays its hardi got b and c when i think i deserve a& b's, she gives quizzes so she knows u read & alot of group work
very bad, don't take her.
SHE IS VERY NICE, BUT TOUGH. THERE ARE FIVE ESSAY ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ARE TWO IN CLASS ESSAYS, TWO TAKE HOME ESSAYS, AND ONE RESEARCH PAPER. A LOT OF QUIZES, BUT EASY. TOUGH GRADER.
Her class is super super boring, and she has in class essays. If you don't want to ruin your GPA, don't take her.
Come On!!! She wasn't that bad. Yes, there are a lot of quizzes, and group work but she is very caring and nice. I will admit that she gives tough grades but they are fair. She is one of the better eng teachers in the school.
She sucks and she is a harsh grader
Great Professor! She is easy and lets you pick your own essay topics. She is a very nice and sweet person. If you participate she will take a liking to you. She makes it a very easy class and allows you to speak your mind no matter what you say. She allows late papers with no penalty and is actually kinda funny.
Dont take her!!! Totally unreachable after class-cannot find her to ask why I got B as a final grade when I was getting A- for essays. Super boring, in love with poetry, snobish, hard grader (grades something but not content), picks on ppl, class is waste of time and natural resources. DONT!!!
She's not that bad. Thought she had a little bit of an attitude problem in the beginning of the semester but she's actually pretty nice. Participate so she knows who you are. Annoying little group assignments (whose purpose can only be to give her a break every now and then). No serious complaints. Token english professor.
DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RUIN YOUR GPA. ALOT OF READING AND STUPID QUIZES. VERY HARSH GRADER. CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY SHE GIVES B. NOBODY GOT AN A IN OUR CLASS. BORING!!!!!
Awsome teacher. Very understanding and always has the class do group work which can totally be b.s.ed Just spend sometimes on the essays and you will be fine. I got an A.
really bad. i hate this two faced professor
I really enjoyed this class. She is a FAIR grader and the big plus is she gave the breakdown of your score for essays. She kept the class very interesting with varied readings (poems, short stories) that were a pleasure to read and creative assignments. Quite a few in-class group assignments and quizzes. Also lenient with due dates for essays.

well she's not a great proffesor and the thing about her is she's gonna give you a grade based on the opinion that she has created about you. if u do bad on her first paper forget getting an A from her, no matter how much u work on it. Another thing about her is that she treats her class like kids.. good luck if u get her
okay professor. pretty tough grader. big on working in groups. there's 4 essays, a midterm which is an in class essay, quizzes everytime a reading is assigned to ensure you read the text, and an oral presentation. not too bad not all that great. definitely somewhere in between...also she's a little on the dorky side lol.
Quite a bit of work, 4 essays, tons of group work, single presentation, quizzes in about each class on the reading you were assigned...the quizzes sound bad but if you did the reading she gives pretty simple questions. If you guess something/say something thats wrong, she'll look at it in a way that makes it right, which is funny.
shes easy jsut take her you can b/s your way through the class i got an A- and i suck in english..shes very nice and helpful as well
Great Professor.. She is not as bad as they make her seem...She's very helpful and is not there to jeopardize your GPA..Most of the people in spring 07 were extremely humorous which made the semester even better..I actually miss the class :-(
Just show up, and stay awake.
if you want to be treated like a kindergardener - that's a professor for you. Also, it's an extremely biased person, so beware.
She is biased, like what everyone has said. Make sure you read everything cause she pretty much gives a quiz every time you have class with her. It may be a written or an oral quiz, depends on her mood. 4 essays, 4 group presentation, 1 individual presentation. She assigns homework occassionally, that's about it. oh yeah, checks attendance!
She's the easiest grader. She tells you exactly what she wants you to write in the paper. As long as you agree with her viewpoints in your papers and use a hard words, it's an easy A. For in class papers, you can pretty much write it before hand and copy it on to looseleaf during the test b/c she lets you bring "notes". Take her if for an easy A.
Prof. Merle has good intentions, but the class is very boring and the consistent quizzes and presentations are just unnecessary.
She is an awesome professor! Her class is very active and fun, and she is a somewhat easy grader. Basically just do what she says on the essays and the class will fly by. I would definitely recommend someone to take her courses!
Great professor! Very clear, friendly, and nice grader. Three essays, two presentations, and final. A lot of readings -- keep up with them and you will do fine. She wants you to follow directions and express your opinions in class. If you do so, you will easily get a good grade.
Great professor. Super friendly. Don't come in late, read before class because there will always be a short quiz at the beginning of class. If you read, you'd do fine. Papers are easy to write, she guides you through each one. I got an A+. Good class, pick her.
She is an incredible professor. The readings assigned are always super interesting and she makes the class extremely fun. She gives a quiz everyday but seriously, just read the material, they're interesting anyway. She gives 5 essays: 2 inclass essays, 2 to write at home and 1 final essay. SHE'S SOOOO NICE. It's fun I enjoyed her class a lot.
Truly amazing! I went in thinking I would hate my english class, but she made me think otherwise. I am so privileged to have been taught by such a great scholar. She is an easy grader, but don't be mistaken, you will learn a lot. Definitely recommend her. Take her for 2150 if she's not already full.
one of the best professors at baruch. she does give a lot of work but if you stay on top of it, its an easy A, and she excludes you from the final. I hated english before i had her.
Not a bad professor at all, but you have to participate for those who are shy in class. So if you take her, get ready to speak up and make sure you do what she tells you do. Just follow her directions. Stay on top of the readings and remember she give quize's in the beginning of the class everyday. So be prepared. Overall, her class is fairly easy.
Prof. Merle is a great teacher! As long as you do the readings and complete the papers on time, then the class should be easy for you. YOU NEED TO DO THE WORK THOUGH! She is a tough grader with the papers but lets you revise them to possibly get a higher grade. If you enjoy English/Literature than you should really enjoy her class.
She is a really good professor and the workload is reasonable. 4 books, 4 papers (1 in class), 2 presentations, & daily quizzes on the readings. Fair grader on essays. Readings are odd but interesting. Definately recommend her!
Professor Merle is very helpful and is highly qualified. She is passionate about literature and she makes sure that her students understand the material. Her readings are a bit strange but overall interesting. Essays are manageable and there are daily quizzes but there easy. Just read, go to class and put in effort and you'll do great. Take her!
I got B- on my first essay and got B- at the end. I think she does not like people who hates literature. Be quite and do not tell her that you take this class because you have to. Tell that you like the literature and you want to know more about it. She give a lot of work, quizzes every day, reading, presentations. Do essays good. Just work hard.
World Lit II - Great professor, she really challenged me to become a better writer and despite not getting things right at first, she worked with me, giving me the chance to improve my grade. When it was all said and done I felt (and still feel) a lot better about trying new things even if they don't seem logical to me at first (no pun intended)!
Not bad at all! She is clear on what she wants from you. All you have to do is attend class ON TIME and show that you actually care. Quiz almost every class but they are fairly simple. Participate and attend class you are mostly guaranteed a B+
Well, she makes everything more complicated than it should be. Moreover, her assignments are confused. There are 3 papers in the class, bunch of quizzes(have to read short stories for those) and couple group presentations. All in all she is not that bad. However, she sounds very annoying when she tell you "to be quiet every 5 seconds"
Don't take her if you have a tendency to be late because shes annoying about it. Follows the syllabus closely, oh and don't buy the handbook because she does not use it!
She is a good professor and a fair grader. Her class made me somewhat more interested in writing. However, there are some annoying "group assignments" and she frequently arranges the class in a circle to talk. I guess that's good if you like that sort of thing. You very rarely use the books so I wouldn't buy them at all. Just borrow a friend's.
I took her half in person, half online classes. Overall the class seemed very improvised. I usually have a hard time in English classes, but i think her grading was a completely unfair. Her readings were tough as, selecting the most abstract work and selecting even harder prompts. Her e-mails are late. She's nice. But i would wouldn't take again.
She is a pretty good english teacher. She loves group assignments, which can be annoying if you hate that kind of stuff. Her readings can be hard but they are also really interesting. If you enjoy literature and is good at essays, then you will do fine.
Taken as a hybrid class half in class, half online. Weekly blog postings online, on top of 30 page readings. Get put into groups with people who have no interest in talking to you. Not very interesting and odd reading pieces. Only took her based on how it fit into my schedule.
Since this was a hybrid class, we only met once a week which is great for someone who is also working. For the "second" day of class we just had a short post or two due on the reading we discussed earlier in the week, which I thought was fair. Although some of the material could have been more interesting, I thought the assignments were fair.
Professor Merle is not one of those teachers who actually enjoys teaching. You can see she just wants to get through the class. If you are just taking this class to get the credit take her. But if you want to get something out of it then don't. I didn't struggle because I'm good in English but a lot of kids did and she can be a harsh grader.
Professor Merle is a good teacher
She cares about this class too much, meaning its an English class in a business school. Its really not something that we students want to take its mandatory to graduate. She takes attendance way too seriously and I wouldnt recommend her to anyone. Baruch students have more to worry about than an English class.
She's a good prof. There's reading and writing, like in any English course, but she's fair and the stuff we read was okay. She seems to actually care about what she's teaching, and even about the students. I'd take her again.
Fair grader. Gives feedback, especially if you're having some problems. Always get back to you.
Not the most fun class, but pretty easy to do well. You'll read some good pieces of literature and there is an easy quiz at the beginning of every class. Make sure to do the readings. The tests and essays are fairly graded.
Not my favorite class I have ever taken, but it was definitely a solid class. Jeanne creates interesting conversations for class and really wants to hear everyone's opinions. As long as you stick to her format of writing you'll do well. Pretty easy A
She's fair and really wants you to do well. In the beginning it's a little hard to get used to her style but once you do what she says and follow her format, it's really not so hard to get an A. She gives great feedback and really wants to see you succeed. There was a fair amount of reading and blog posts, but worth it for the pretty easy A.
The best English professor I have had at Baruch. She gives you new perspectives of looking at the text and most importantly, gives you your creative freedom. She also doesnt require you to purchase anything which is extremely considerate. I really appreciated her class.
This was a hybrid class, met once a week. Mostly online. It was fairly easy. Quiz every week on readings, 2 essays overall. Midterm & take home final. Attendance is mandatory if you miss class once it will affect you. 2 posts online every week which gets a bit annoying. If you miss one of the posts its considered an absence, take them seriously.
Nice Professor who assigns a ton of work. Most of the online postings were boring and time consuming but the readings were not that bad. A tough grader who also is strict with attendance. An A is obtainable for sure but it will take a lot of work. Not ideal if you are taking 4+ classes. She forgets that her students have other classes sometimes.
Avoid if you can. I was under the impression that she does not like teaching at all. Classic case of English teacher who thinks English is the center of the universe and forgets that this is a business school and for most students are just forced to take to take this class. Keywords: time-consuming, no passion, very disorganized.
I'm not usually great at English, but she made the course pretty interesting. Even though the books were kind of hard, she made connections to what was going on in the world today, which made this a lot better than I expected. I'd take her again.
The texts are kinda hard to understand when you first read it but it she explains it perfectly. She relates the text to things happening now which makes the lesson better. Make sure you participate because that it a big part of your grade. Everything she talks about during class will be bought up during midterm and final. One one essay we did.
Loved this class and prof is nice. Many readings which she provides and weekly discussion posts. Interesting stories and good class discussion. Always reminded us participation is a good part of our grade but if you can learn to interpret or say abstract things, it should be easy, along with midterm and final. Would love to take this class again
she's lovely, only thing is you HAVE to attend her class. She also required us to have our cameras on but honestly wasn't that bad. Had one major essay and 2 exams, you have to read the texts every week and make sure you do cause she cold calls and it gets annoying but its just to make sure that you're paying attention.
Such a sweetheart. Wonderful professor. So nice and understanding. She doesnt play with due dates so get things done on time but other than that she is a kind soul. 2 discussion boards due everyweek, participation is required from everyone for every class. Only 1 critical essay and 1 group project and the rest is a breeze. Loved her.
Extremely unreasonable
She's really listening to you, and the discussions are interesting. She's a fair grader, and the texts are really interesting. Attendance matters, and so does participation, but she's pretty encouraging, and everybody's voice counts. I'd definitely take her again.
She is very close-minded and gets visibly upset if you express an opinion that she does not agree with. She has us post discussion boards AND responses weekly, which are based on long and boring readings. Her midterm was a lot of writing in a short amount of time. She requires class participation and will often randomly call on people.
She was pretty cool. This is a class where everyone's opinion is respected. I really felt heard and that's not always the case. The readings were interesting and connected to relevant stuff today. There's one midterm exam and an essay at the end. 2 posts per week, but not difficult. Would def take her again.
There's reading for every week, but they're pretty short and interesting. There's an oral presentation, but I ended up liking it (didn't think I would). We had to interview someone with the opposite point of view and try to see where they're coming from, pretty interesting. Also, I agree with others that she respects everyone's ideas.
Overall the class is pretty heavy on reading and analysis based writing. I highly recommend broadening your approach when it comes to making your own interpretations for your readings. A more nuanced class I will say, she will work with you as long as you follow directions. Please do your discussion boards they will make or break your grade !
Prof is caring and stood up for students if there's bully. Weekly discussion post based on reading, then comment on someone's. Midterm (2 hrs, 6 Qs based on past reading, 8 pars), familiar with texts and prepare quotes in advance otherwise there's no enough time. 1 oral presentation with peer. Final is an essay, instruction posted after midterm.
Good professor. Make sure you read the weekly readings before each class because you will be asked questions and participation is 20% of your grade. She takes notes of those who doesn't answer. One group project, midterm exam, final essay and weekly DBs. No textbook, she provides pdfs of the weekly readings. Overall I do recommend her.
