tough teacher, but makes you learn the info, and very fair
A LOT OF WRITING!
nice lady class is boring test are essay
No Comments
This woman is so boring. I cant stay awake and the tests are so hard... baiscally memorize info for 50 things, only write about 4 on test... thats stupid... why am i gonna memorize all that just to write about 4? blah forget it... dont take her
Very nice lady. Wants you to do well. A lot of writing, but drops your lowest grades. I like her a lot. A good teacher interseted in YOUR education.
Hard for a 101 class... good thing you get to drop lower grades but the tests are still very hard. classes are pretty boring. good site on webct to obtain lecture notes and study aids
she talks to use like we are in the first grade, but she is real easy
Her class was the worst class ever! Her test are rediculously hard- nothing but pointless memorization. She grades essays harder than my english teachers, and there is sooo much writing. Barely passed this class as a freshman- DONT DO IT!
I had her my first semester, and I am now garduating in 4 months...to this day, she is BY FAR the worst teacher I had at SU. There was more wiritng in that class than there was in my english classes. incredibly boring. Take my advice, DO NOT take her
I can't emphasize enough on how bad of a teacher she really is. Way too much writing on the tests and pointless reading material. Very boring. Don't take her.
if you like writing 800000000 esssays shes for you
Sweet lady, always helpful, test are essay (which is great). Nice teacher, as long as you aren't a slacker you will do fine.
One of the nicest professors I've ever had. Class was easy if you took notes and studied. Essay tests. None of them too hard. I found her to be an easy grader. Don't believe everything you read. Can't wait till some of these reviewers meet a "mean&qu
fell asleep every day and had to memorize too much. I spent so much time memorizing so much information and ended up going blank and confusing terms on the test because there was just too much... and i have a good memory. nice lady but crappy class
very hard class in general. overall i think shes great. if you study the terms she gives you, and do your essays ahead of time, you should be fine on the tests. Lots of writting and a tough grader. will you earn your grade. overall i recommend her.
great professor
smart as hell but she would be a better high school or middle school teacher.
Shes a nice lady but she makes you work for your grade. Class is a bit boring, I'm not gonna lie I fell asleep a few times. But she has some fun days where you can get extra credit on test. I think this class is just hard in general..not her fault.
Dr. Whitney is very nice. Power point and essay tests. A few short papers too. You'll have to work for an A.
She is a great teacher, but the class is terribly boring. The only hard thing is the tests.
She is a very good teacher. She does make you work for your grade. Her test aren't hard if you study like you're suppose to. She does lots of assingments but she only counts the top 10 of 15 and so forth so it should be an easy B. A's in history are impossible anyhow.
horrible - horrible
she belongs in a grade school
Expects a lot from students. But overall a fun class. Her issue is that she always points out the poor points of anything you turn in, even if you get an A. She needs to try to throw in a few compliments here and there. Would not take her again.
Easy teacher, but very uninteresting. What should be a detailed look at American religious history seems like a survey class. She also seem very unprepared for each lecture. Lots of uhms. Also treats you like a child. Would not recommend her at all.
Actually kept me awake and got me interested! ( i HATE history)Excellent powerpoint. easy A if u stay on top of assignments. Critical on writing skills but still gives a decent grade. i would def take her again.
Offers a lot of extra bs points like participtaion and class work. Once you figure out her test they're easy - just study hard. But overall pretty boring - not very interesting.
Still not sure what this class was actually about. but i do know she likes to dress up as historical figures when gardening, thanks a lot xena i no longer consider myself a history scholar.
boring class. the test are pretty hard. not interesting
she's BORING....suckssssss
She's really boring, has a few essays that are impossible to write and are graded really hard. Tests have essays and short answers too, they're tough. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Dr. Whitney is a very enthusiastic & knowledgeable prof who cares about students. She's a tough grader, but is very willing to help outside of class. She has great visuals on PowerPoint, interactive class activities & outlines posted on WebCT. Do the readings, study, go to her if you have problems and you'll enjoy the class and do well.
She is amazing. she is very helpful and i enjoyed her teaching. She has notes everyday and the tests can be hard. but i loved her class and i wish she would have taught 102 also.
very nice lady. lots of passion about what shes teaching but its just an extremely boring class if you're not an american history buff. lotssss of papers: 3 on 3 different novels and 1 on a movie, then a 12 page final :(, lots of novel reading. alright grader, not too bad just very picky. midterm and final are essays. DONT TAKE if you dont have to
Ms. Whitney, is so helpful as long as you ask and actually try. She gives you6 essays and grades your best 3 and then she gives 15 in class assignments and grades your best 10! She is so nice and really cares about the students. She really has a passion for what she does! I would strongly reccomend her!
BORING. Don't take her in the morning, you'll never wake up. She's nice, but the class is almost unbearable. The exams aren't too easy either.
Nice lady, and very helpful outside of class. But lecture can be very boring. I fell asleep a number of times and missed stuff. Do not take her. Take Ackerson
Very easy teacher. Just take notes. But, pay attention to doing 3 essays outside of the class, 2 book essays, and 3 primary essays on short articles, plus one group project. Her tests are very straight forward and the grades easily.
If you can get past her stuttering, she is very knowledgeable in the topic and is great at explaining!!! Take Notes, memorize information, and hope to remember it and write essay exams! Highly Recommended if you are willing to WORK!
This class has been awful! There is so much work and nothing is explained in class that we have to read outside of class! Plus she is so monotoned and dull!
If you love to write..then shes your match. Worse teacher I've ever had! I understand its college, but I had more work for this class than for all my others combined. Most boring woman ever. Nice, but extremely hard and boring.
Dr. Whitney is very nice, and she is a great lady. Her lectures can be dry and boring, but very informative. I recommend her if you have don't get bored easily and like historu...A LOT. I've passed her midterm and essays with out studying or reading the book...but she does make you work for your grade. Take a class with her, but be prepared.
Papers, papers, papers. That's all you do in this class. It's awful. There are 3 mandatory essays, 3 discussion board essays, 2book essays, 3 book reading quizzes which are essay, and three other writing projects. All her exams are essay too. It's awful. Don't take if you have other classes!
WORST TEACHER EVER. Doesnt explain anything, most all of the work is done online which gets really annoying. Lectures are soooo boring. I LOVE history but she has made me hate her class
I took her for 382 and got a B but I worked my behind off for that grade. She was a great teacher.....and then... i signed up to take her for 201 and withdrew. She had an assignment due EVERY class period for 201, but 382 things were more spread out. I'd say avoid her for lower level classes but definitely take her for more advanced ones
40 classes, 26 projects: 6 tasks, 12 essays, a biography research project, another research project, 2 movie reports, 4 book reports. 3 essay exams and an essay final. Mandatory attendance. Tough grading. Boring lectures with little to learn in comparison to grading. Tried hard, did every assignment, and only missed 2 days of class. Got a low D.
Honestly the worst history teacher I have every had. I took world history last semester with another professor, and got an A, and I barely pulled off a B this time around. She always has something due and never offers any help with assignments. It seems like Dr. Whitney almost wants you to fail.
She is a very nice person but there are constantly things to be turned in. Never any down time...i recommend her if you have a strong interest in history but if you are just taking this class because you have to, i don't recommend taking it with her.
This is college and as expected you have to write a bit, nothing major. I took her class and it was pretty easy. I'm a history major, so this class was a breeze, but I guess some had a harder time at this class than others. For me it was very easy, just do your work, read some of the books, and write decent essays. Its a pretty easy A or B class.
Classic case of a good historian, bad professor. She speaks so quietly its impossible to hear her, and there's always something due (to the extent that you never know whats due). She has great subject mastery, it's just too bad that the class doubles as lunesta.
Least favorite teacher I've ever had. Tough, inconsistent grader. Assigns readings for quizzes then relays a useless version of it in class. Lectures are hit or miss. Lots of essays & quizzes, always something due. I do not recommend her honestly. She knows the material but she's so mono-toned & dull it's basically begging you to fall sleep.
AVOID! She is very strict in grading. For the 15 page paper she expects it to be completely original. Time period allowed is horrible. Lectures do not pertain to anything relative to writing the paper.
She knows what she's talking about, but you will hate it so much. So much work and far more than the other teachers for the same class. Grab any other History prof if you can.
Dr. Whitney is a disgrace of a professor and she makes the class boring and is a harsh grader. She has the class take online quizzes, write long papers, do projects, and when test time came we only had 1 question on it and it was an essay and all that was project/homework related is irrelevant to the test. Don't recommend taking her class at all.
Dr. Whitney is an incredibly hard grader for starters, there is an insane amount of assignments to the point you lose track because she assigns work before a current assignment is even due. She is extremely knowledgeable in history but teaches in the utmost boring way that your watching the clock all class long. Avoid her if all you need is a GenEd
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Hated her as a teacher. Very hard grader. She wanted us to basically write a PhD Thesis in 12 pages for an undergrad class. Lectures didnt teach a thing. Makes you feel stupid if you try and get her help outside of class in an email or her office. Terrible professor. DO NOT TAKE!
Terrible teacher do not take this class
She is difficult but I personally liked her. Her class was rewarding when you finally got a good grade. I learned a lot about writing s paper. I would recommend taking this course but just be prepared to work
She is a nice woman, but she is a very tough grader. She expects you to know every date in history and to include it into your work. Her tests are 2-3 page essays you have to write in class (which are very hard). She takes it as if everyone is a history major in her class and her lectures are boring.
She is an incredibly difficult grader, and lectures about completely irrelevant things. Speaks in a monotone, and gives excessive work. Classes are incredibly boring, and unfortunately mandatory due to the fact that she deducts participation points after two missed classes. Also has no sympathy when it comes to due dates. Try to avoid this class!
Just awful.
She is the worst teacher. She knows what she's talking about but she's just so boring when she talks. she's a very hard grader. She has essays and grades them like you're in an English class. I would NOT take her. she's a nice person but not a good history professor. she does know what she's talking about though. this class is BORING!
She's a very boring teacher, it's hard to not fall asleep in her class. HARD grader. Sweet lady but when you ask a question in class her answers are mostly "uh... um...." Would not recommend her.
Awful teacher don't take she is a very annoying teacher and probably gets pleasure from speaking about history
Think long and hard about someone you hate. Someone who you just really really don't like. This person, in your mind, sucks eggs. If you could, you would fight this person to the death and 10 times out of 10 you would win. You would rather eat an infant child than make friends with this person. Guys. This accurately describes Whitney. Don't do it.
She's kind of the worst. She grades really hard for no reason, and there's a paper every other week. The quizzes are hard unless you remember everything you read in the textbook. She lectures the whole entire class but the lectures don't really help with anything, attendance counts towards your grade. &she has reading quizzes in the form of essays
Dr. Whitney's lectures are boring and will put you to sleep, but if you do most assignments, you'll end up with an A. Her grading is based on a point system. It's easy to get an A on her exams because she gives out a study guide that really helps. The quizzes suck though.
Strict due dates and lots of homework. Has no sympathy for any situations and is very boring
For an educator who relies so much on her lectures to convey information, you think she'd use less "ums" and "uhs" and find a way to avoid students falling asleep in her class. Attendance counts but if you skip even once you're liable to miss so much information you fail the whole class anyway.
Basically everything that you've read about Dr. Whitney in the reviews below are true. Probably the worst when it comes to actually teaching and communicating with the class. Expects you to know the textbook like the back of your hand, and tests are hard too. Mono-toned af and boring in lecture. Avoid at all costs.
Awful. Lectures are boring. She is difficult to interact with in class and especially outside class: screams a lot! You need to attend all the boring classes to pass, but it is not a difficult task if you don't mind what she babbles.
Avoid this teacher! She mumbles throughout the entire class, will not give out rubrics for the dozens of papers she assigns, and her grading makes no sense since she wont tell you what she's looking for. And probably worst off, her lectures consist of her talking about one thing, while the powerpoint covers completely different information.
Worst teacher I've had yet. She teaches gen-ed classes yet grades your assignments as if it is your major. She doesn't offer extra credit unless it is class-wide. Has the most monotone voice, it is a struggle to even stay awake. Papers are so long and she will pick apart and scrutinize every single sentence.
Decent professor. She sometimes made it difficult to understand how she grades things and takes a long time to grade. Talks a lot and is really lecture-heavy. She assigned a lot of textbooks to buy and I think I opened 2 of them. You do not have to read the Oakes textbook to pass, I did not touch it and did fine.
Dr. Whitney is a really tough grader. She also does not explain her grading she just writes your grade at the end of your assignment in pencil with little to no explanation. Shes really nice but her lectures are boring and theres a lot of papers to write throughout the course. The textbook quizzes were okay.
She is very boring (monotone voice, excessive talking). In lecture, she puts barely anything on her PowerPoints, so you need to pay attention to understand. She is a very picky grader, but doesn't explain what she wants, and doesn't give you a heads up when something is due. There are a lot of online assignments, so remember due dates!
One of the most boring teachers ever! She assigns papers constantly based on long readings and provides no helpful feedback on what she actually wants. She does not participate in test reviews and is fine letting the whole class study a review that is completely wrong. P.S. all of your exams are timed essays that she expects to be perfect quality.
Sweet lady, but terrible professor. Just do not even go down that road, switch into a different class asap before it's too late.
Had to drop this class halfway through the semester because Whitney was such a terrible professor. If you take her class, expect to teach yourself all the content and do extensive and useless papers every single week. Attendance is mandatory, yet she just rambles for 50 minutes and then tests you on things she never talked about once. Dont take it
She is sweet but talks way to much. She gives way to much information a lot of which we do not use. What we learn in class and do outside of class reflects very little on the tests. This semester for the first exam over half the class failed... she cares but i would try to get some one else.
Gives reviews and critiques of papers that are unhelpful and contradictory at times, very demanding and borderline unreasonable.
Professor Whitney is something else... she seems to know what she's talking about but man is she a bore. Her lectures are basically useless as it seems most classes she doesn't even plan what she is going to say ahead of time. The requirements she place seem absurd but those might just be enforced by the department. Good luck, you're on your own.
This class was one of the worst I've taken at here. Whitney did not speak clear in her lectures, and the words on her slides only make sense in her head. None of the slides are in complete sentences or even thoughts. Whitney also doesn't make your grade available the whole year so you are left guessing. She has been teaching for far too long.
Dr. Whitney was passionate about the topic, but the hour and 15 minutes lectures felt like an eternity. There was no way for you to figure out what your grade was. There were no rubrics available so the most I got on the essays was an 80%. I personally would not recommend if you dont absolutely love the history behind American architecture.
I would not recommend taking Dr. Whitney. Her lectures were long and not entertaining. The slideshows she displayed during the lecture had barely any words so it was hard to take detailed notes. She is an extremely tough grader. She would not provide much feedback on your essays unless you specifically ask her. I would definitely avoid her.
I LOVED Dr. Whitneys class. Im a History major and had a blast with the class. You have to take a lot of notes and actually study, but I felt like I genuinely learned from her class. She rounded my grade up to an A from a B+ too. Cant wait to have her again.
Lectures are long-winded and wrong. Made a pedagogically false statement that the civil war was fought due to northern aggression, which leaves gross implications that make me question her understanding of history and slavery. Do not take unless you want confederate dogma. But, if you want to take a nap, her rambling lectures are a good lullaby.
Do not take this professor
She reads off powerpoints every lecture. Sometimes you'll do an in-class activity, but not really. Lectures are her just reading off the powerpoint and its hard to focus.
Lectures can get boring-try your best to take notes bc she has extra credit sessions at end of unit based on your notes. Lots of assignments throughout semester, you can fix a grade.
She is the most boring professor I have ever taken. She talks super slowly and only puts a few words on her slides. She's nice, but I do not recommend her.
Mrs. Whitney is a very nice lady, but she's a very boring professor to listen to. Her style of teaching does not accommodate my learning style which is why it was hard for me to retain the concepts discussed in class. Her PowerPoints aren't helpful for studying and her feedback didn't help me improve. She's a nice person, but a terrible professor.
