she's awesome!! extremely helpful, but expects a lot. (which is good.)
yea jeannie!!!
an excellent teacher, very helpful, makes course interesting
keeps things fun fantastic teacher
Marks on quantity, not quality. So use lots of pointless filler in your essays.
very helpful and easy to approach...keep up the great teaching!
come up w/ an original thought and she'll marvel at your brilliance
You can skip all her classes, coz the classes do not worth while
Jeannie's knowledge of a quality paper surpasses that of a cocky 1s year student
By far one of the wors profs ive ever had - countless eroors in everything. She knows what is wrong with your paper, but never explains how to prevent such errors. If you can b.s. well, you'll do fine.

By far the one of the best teachers I've ever had. She takes you to places that stretch your imagination beyond measure. PoCo rocks!!!
Great teacher! Actually helps you improve your writing! Passionate and knowledgeable. Amazing! Don't miss her classes though, they're packed! Very acknoledging of success.
She definitely helped me with my writing.
really great teacher, very interesting, i actually like poetry analysis now!!!
No 'A' policy!Very aggressive marker.Passionate about literature, although if your not, you will crash and burn.
I enjoyed her class and her love for teaching. She is extremely helpful when you have a question and she takes time to make sure you understand. Taking her class definetly helped improve my writing.
She Super dooper SUX!!!!
Great teacher
Not particularly bad at teaching, however is very harsh with marking, and more then a little ****. Has a "my way or the highway" attitude. Does not promote free speech, as well as talks down to people. Condesending, but not awful. I hate the class because of her, but shes not a bas TEACH-er.
Jeannie is the biggest feminist I have ever met "Boys beware" but she is exstremly educated in literature, and is probably proofreading this right now. Does not like opposing views. But overall she will inprove your writing capabilities. She is really nice if you don't let her annoy you.
Supposed to be an advanced composition course... NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! Serious femminist, feels threatened by anyone with intelligence, and own point of view. Figures that to show up for the job is enough, bring your pillow for most lectures. Teaches at a grade ten level... Review pending -can't wait.
This teachers is an unorganized opinionated condescending femenist half-wit. She can't remember what she taught last class half the time. She expects you to do readings she never assigned and gave the class 2 DAYS to do an annotated works cited worth 10% of our final mark. Horrible teacher.
Very casual teaching style that creates a relaxed easy atmosphere that is easy to share opinions. The course helped me in all my classes. Apart from organization problems (changing assingments a week before they're due)she is very helpful and a good teacher. Will help you build good argument essays.
She is talented, and marked our papers well. However, Jeannie is a lot of things and a good prof isn't one of them. She was very unorganized and often hard to understand. She changed the format of our final exam drastically on three seperate occasions. She also has yet to return our last paper...whi
Jeannie is Lazy--talented but lazy. She was an unorganized mess of changed opinions and continually changing exams. She still hasn't returned our last paper, which makes me wonder...why is it that we're forking out so much $? Is it so she can NOT organize a class and NOT mark our work?
I don't know what you guys are all whining about... unorganized? changing dates? she pushed back deadlines to help the slackers out and made her expectations easier on us. If you didn't have enough time for an assignment ("2 DAYS") its because you weren't paying attention. Good teacher IMO. Helped
Globalization this, imperialsm that.....Can we talk about anything else for a change? Seriously the whole semester- the same thing....uhg..what a waste of money...yes i was positive, willing to learn, but really what a waste of money

"Feminism and politics? But, Jeannie, I thought this was an ENGLISH class." She's a smart cookie, but Jeannie goes waaay off track with the whole feminist thing. And I do agree that she's disorganized. It was great the first time she pushed back a due date, but after a while I wanted to choke her. This is college, woman! Stop letting us slack!
Exact opposite to 12/20/04 posting. Probably posted it herself. She is unorganized, and an impediment to any person's educational goals - if they expect to actually learn something. This is not an advanced course. You would learn more with a correspondence course.
I find that Dr. Martin is the most Human teacher i have had. She makes mistakes like the rest of us but OWNS up to them. she knows her stuff and is willing to help, however you need to be able to take advantage of that help. and What $ its like 200$ come on!!!!
pos: passionate about subject, willing to spend LOTS of time one on one, gives exam questions before exam. neg: didn't teach enough background & students felt lost, Extreme work load, untactful when discussing student's writing in class, did not do the in class grammar lessons each class as planned. Sorry Jeannie, but this class wasn't your best.
that was not a very satisfying experience. she's okay, but she didn't seem to have this course planned out very well. From now on I'll stick with the pros: tapping, rout, beedham.
I thought this was an ENGLISH class? She's willing to explain anything BUT english.
Jeannie does expect a lot from her students. I found her to be very accepting of other viewpoints if you have even a small amount of knowledge to back up your claims. Course material was very worldly. What you get from this class depends what you want. Easy "A", nope. Genuine feedback and writing improvement, yes. She is a humanist not a feminist.
Even though I recieved a high mark in this class, I wanted to warn those who are thinking of taking 215! Don't! The reading journal is a killer and serves no real purpose. A really nice person but this class served not much of a purpose. No need to show up to class as the assignments were out of the text book. An easy "A" but time consuming.
I do not recommend her as your prof. She's a very nice lady and knows what she is talking about but that's about it. We had 3 lectures on how to use a common correctly.
Very demanding, rigid. Talked down to students. Told class she was punishing us by making us write two back-to-back essays in final because she was not pleased with the class participation that day. (We had just got back our grades for an essay and they were so low that the class was in shock). Not recommended.
Jeannie is very dedicated to her students and to her work. She takes you seriously when you take your work seriously. You will get out of her class what you put into it. At first I was intimidated by her, but by the end it was by far my most favorite class! I highly recommend Jeannie. Her Eng. 415 has truly changed my life!
She is a really neat person and has a lot of stories to tell. I really like our discussions in class ... it's actually ok to have a wild opinion in her class.
I find the the literature that we study in class to be very interesting. Not the same old boring garbage. Very globally minded person, interesting to listen to. Don't miss class, it will be reflected in your final grade. Hard marker, but overall an enjoyable class.
At first I found her opinions refreshing. After however the poetry unit ended it began to feel less and less like an English class. I understand wanting to give us some background information on the topics however I don't feel we need to discuss it every class. I'm also finding it illogical that she will shoot down opinions she doesn't agree with.
she is a very strict marker.. if u are a international student, u have to be very careful:(
extremely horrible teacher
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! i took her summer class and learned nothing. She kept making excuses that since its a summer class she has no time to teach us important information. if she had no time to teach us how come we got off class 1hr 1/2 early many times....?
A nice enough women but a bit tactless as a teacher. She was hard on international and condescending to everyone. No one should have to feel ashamed or guilty because they're acting like a student.
A demanding teacher with poor leadership and communication skills.
Jeannie's an interesting woman. She's got strong opinions, which many students seem to dislike. I don't mind. Her grammatical suggestions are relevant and often helpful. Overall, I think she focuses too heavily on textbook essays; it feels like filler. Jeannie often makes excuses to leave class early, which is frustrating. No one speaks up, though.
She should change her career.
The class itself is good in the fact that we only had 3 assignments - all of which were essays. Jeannie's teaching style is unorganized and she is unwilling to listen to opinions that go against what she believes. A lot of our time in Eng 111 was spent talking about politics and feminism rather than the class materials. Not recommended.
Tactless and disorganized. She gets so easily carried away with conversations that no real work is done. Overall, her classes are fun, but are pure discussion. She tries to impliment some learning into her classes, but it is more of a self-teach situation.
Not my favorite teacher or class, but I didn't find any organizational problems like everyone has been complaining about, however I am looking forward to being done the class.
jeannie is a terrible terrible teacher. she is unorganized, opinionated, rude, and self centered. she would FORGET to come to class (how does a teacher FORGET to go to class?) and always leave early. she is a hard marker and shares far too much personal information. ick. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS
She is neat to be in class with as long as you don't have to right a paper for her. Although i found that if you show up for classes then she is willing to give you allot more chances then some to re-do work.
Martin gives too much homework and has out-dated environmental ideas, insisting on single-sided printouts instead of the environmentally friendly double-sided. She is too hyper; sometimes her laugh was so shrill that I jumped. She talks too much; at times, however, she did try to involved her students. She vanished from the room within minutes of declaring the class time expired.
Terrible, opinionated, useless, waste of time going to class, However she takes attendance every class! Takes 2 weeks or longer to mark papers and declares that the "norm" for all proffs, despite having colleagues who return papers by next class. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS, EVEN IF IT MEANS SWITCHING MAJORS OR CAMPUSES!!
This lady is totally self absorbed. She is full of herself and thinks she is better than everyone. It would be nice if she joined the real world.
She is a very difficult professor. She is a very hard marker. Even though I worked endlessly on my papers, I still not a very low mark. I would avoide taking her classes.
This woman is condescending, and often intimidating. While she may be knowledgeable, she was reluctant to give advice. Her lectures were often overtly opinionated, and noticeably strident. She had little time for differing opinions, and quite frequently refused to entertain them. Hard work was no guaranty of success. First Years Beware!
Jeannie couldn?t seem to separate her own political leanings from the classroom, and her lectures were more than noticably biased. She is an intelligent women, but intirelly tactless. She expressed some willingness to help, but was always preocupied. To say she picked the wrong proffession is a great understatement.

She is very difficult and picky professor. I spent all my time to finish and revise my papper, but I still got F. I will never take her any classes any more.
Way too opinionated. She marks your papers based on whether or not you agree with her views. Despite having guidelines for marking, she disregards them quite often, awarding the most unclear papers (that agree with her views) the highest grades, while giving near scholarly reports low marks because they challenge her opinions. Stay away
She's a difficult marker but I learned a lot in that class. Be prepared to put in a lot of effort.
I admit that sometimes I had doubts about relevance, but I loved Jeannie's lectures and I thought her course taught us first years very valuable skills. She definitely was a drone-prof and all in all I really enjoyed her class
Hard marker
I really enjoyed Jeannie's class. She is definitely a tough marker, but if you put effort into the homework and the readings you should do okay. Jeannie is upfront about her expectations, so you cannot fault her for being tough. She does do a grammar overview, but if you have weak grammar Jeannie will put the onus on you to learn the material.
Jeannie expects students to take an interest in english. I learned a lot of skills to apply to different courses that you have to write for. She is a hard marker but clear about her expectations.
Without a doubt the worst teacher I have ever had. She was condescending to students who asked questions and she would waste your time in a 3 hour class and then send you to the writing center on your own time to learn things she could have done in class. A course with her is the biggest waste of your time, money and patience. Avoid at all cost! :(
Jeannie is a hard marker, she wants people to take notes constantly. She isn't very warm in class and has a "take no BS" attitude. She's usually unorganized and forgetful. If you want a good mark USE the Learning Center. That's how I ended up with a good mark. She's reasonably fair if you talk to her during office hours to voice concerns.
Very hard marker and would be unclear of what she wanted for your papers. She never seemed to want to help you if you went into her office for help, when she even said come and see her during office hours. In the end no one in the class liked her. Not a pleasant experience for a first year student.
my whole class feels she is an extremley hard marker but I really think that's a reflection of your own work, I excel with my writing and grammer skills and received B+'s and A-'s throughout the class. But I struggled to keep up with the amount of reading that was assigned and holy damn that class was BORING to sit through for three hours!
Single worst teacher I have ever had. She ha unexpressed expectations and lacks empathy in every way. AVOID :S
Puts her opinions into class and doesn't appreciate others comments. Will correct you in front of class.
I consider either of these two courses a must have in any degree. Jeannie has great energy and enthusiasm and as a result you WILL learn how to write in her class. I highly recommend her courses.
Jeannie is a hard teacher, but she is very helpful and wants to see you improving and learning. I enjoyed her class. My first paper was of C quailty, Jeannie put in the time to help correct my mistakes. I ended the class with 98% on my final paper. :) Thank you Jeannie
I would not recommend taking Jeannie's class to anybody. She will tell you your opinion is wrong in front of the class which is embarrassing, and she is often unclear when telling you what she wants in her assignments. I can understand that this is a university course but it's a first level class. She should at least be willing to offer help.
I would not recommend this class to a first year student. Coming out of high school and any thoughts I had about having a really good grasp on English concepts were crushed when I entered Jeannie's class. She was degrading at times towards me and I felt like I wasn't smart. She is unorganized and lost several assignments, and often called in sick.
Don't Take her class
First year students beware! She has unexpressed expectations, and in regards to assignments she is very unclear.I would not recommend taking her classes.
Completely unrelated to class content she slammed spirituality starting a disagreementfight, and then went and sneered in a corner as the class mates continued and some left for the day. She displays the A+ papers' introductions; they will always be about feminism, despite blatant spelling and grammatical errors in many of them! She oozes cruelty
I grad in June with a major in English and throughout my four years at VIU Jeannie is responsible for giving me the lowest grade I have ever received in an English University course. First years beware.. her grading makes the smartest people feel stupid and all she talks about is slam poetry. Avoid at all costs and pick another prof.
She was not a very good teacher.
I don't understand why most people seem to hate Jeannie? Sure, she expects you to do your work and to be mindful of spelling and grammar, but that sounds reasonable to me. She will certainly teach you how to write better. I'd take her class again in a heartbeat.
Jeannie is an OK prof. She can teach pretty good, promotes feedback, likes group activities, and she doesn't just read off of a projector. However, her marking is picky, she's very liberal and she's not afraid to spew off her opinions. She made it clear you can't skip classes even though most of the time I didn't learn anything in her classes. meh
Bad professor!!! Students with disabilities beware! She hates technology, and only allows it in the class if you need it due to a disability. If you have a disability but want to remain incognito, this is not the course for you. I immediately switched it because I did not want to be singled out.
very very rude. subjective. wouldnt take her. she singles out international students especially. please dont take her. she doesnt have a good heart. more angry words to describe her but you have to be humble. she has to improve.
