This instructor is really nice, however he doesn't explain things really well. Your grade is from tests and quizzes so study study!! His tests are pretty tough.. His tests are from his lectures and gives a study guide and extra sometimes.. very rare! Pretty tough! I self taught pretty much..
Jed is a nice guy and he seems to know his stuff when it comes to Biology but he teaches textbook style. He doesn't clearly describe things and if you get a little behind he just keeps moving. When you ask questions he has a hard time explaining it clearly. No extra credit, super hard tests. Try another teacher for this course.
Jed was great. He was very thorough when presenting the material so that the concepts were well understood. He was always happy to answer questions or help out with problems. He even added a few extra points to each of our tests and was very fair with grading. Tests were detailed but he provided all the info in class lectures. I would recommend him
Jed is a very nice person but I think that he forgets that this is a subject that we are just learning about. He talks to you like you already know everything. Hard test, study guides were not usefull. And little to no extra credit. The whole grade was bases on 5 test and a few quizes.
Nice guy but terrible teacher. His tests were extremely difficult and his study guide were not very helpful. When we would ask questions about the tests he would basically tell you to know everything. He went over so much information and then expected you to be able to test well on it. No assignments only tests. By far the worst teacher I have had.
Worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't teach very well, and if you have questions, he has a very hard time explaining the answer to help you understand. I would get a different teacher for this course. The tests are impossible to pass - my class's average was a 73%...Come on.
Nice guy, awful professor. When you ask a question, he never can seem to answer it.
Jed is a good professor. He's not tough - he's fair and tests on the material (which is tough). He is patient and his friendly demeanor make him very approachable. I've got a BA from another U and would rate him in my top 5 professors. It's surprising how much people "rag" on him but wake up folks! It's college. It's going to be tough!
Fairly good teacher, the tests were fairly easy, and didn't test you on anything that you didn't go over in class. I reccommend him, His lectures are boring, but it's biology.
Extremely helpful and patient if you need extra help during his office hours. He wants you to understand what is going on. He gave extra credit. Tests were very fair and he curves tests to a class average of 75% if he needs to. He drops your lowest test too. Have to study because it is an upper level bio course. He is a great teacher and fair.
Jed is immensely knowledgeable in the curriculum he teaches and his explanations, discussions and feedback were professional, friendly and helpful. His grading was extremely thorough and lax. Contrary to the other reviews, I thought Jed was a professional, experienced teacher. If you are confused, ask him to clarify and he will.
Jed is well prepared and the class is organized well. He is willing to help anyone out if needed. However, his ability to explain topics & concepts in a different way if you don't understand them is lacking. His tests are not too difficult, but attending lectures is very helpful to succeed on his tests & in the class.
He is a great teacher! He will help you just ask, he is more than willing to help. The tests aren't that bad you just have to study his power points. He also drops your lowest quiz and test.
Overall a very good professor. His tests are crazy hard and will take some extra studying but I definitely though he was awesome and would recommend.
Nice guy, but doesn't lecture very well. His study guides aren't too useful unless you attend lecture and take down good notes. However his lectures are tough to follow and finding relevant information in the book is difficult. If I know any choice I'd take the course elsewhere. He's the only one that teaches genetics at SLCC however.
Your whole grade is mostly the tests and the labs, so study hard. I really wanted an A in this class, but you can only miss 40 points in his whole grading system to get an A which is out of 500. He's a good teacher, good luck
I haven't taken Bio since I was in high school and was nervous as to how I would do in the class. Jed is so helpful, you can email him and he is always happy to answer and also meet with you. He will help you with homework questions even though they are worth credit towards the class. I geniunely felt like he wanted students to pass the class.
His lectures are thorough and clear. The lectures prepare you for the tests. All lecture notes are online and easy to follow. Questions are taken from the book as well. His tests are straight forward. If you have a question he will explain it again so that you understand before he moves on. Great professor, would take another class from him.
Jedediah is a great teacher and is very helpful. If you do the 2 assignments per test and study and know the material, then you can easily pass. Everything is straight forward, just pay attention.
Lectures are not boring but they are straight to the point and he tries to hit them from every angle to make sure it is understood. Reviews before every quiz and test. Quizzes are pretty easy but tests are tough. Make sure you know everything in the slideshows he goes over and do the vocal and story problem assignments for each section.
Instructor is approachable and willing to explain and answer questions.
Pretty easy A. Textbook is only for practice questions, so not required. He explains things well and goes though power points during class which can be found online. 3 Tests and a final, Easy vocab and question assignments due on test days, 10 question quizzes every other week. His tests were easy and covered basic concepts. No trick questions.
Jed is a nice guy but unfortunately not a very good teacher. He is very knowledgeable and it is visible that he has a passion for the subject. Sadly the way he presents this level of Biology is not the best way, there is too much information and no study guide. He does grade on a curve though which is nice.
Jed is a great professor. He responds to questions in class and is quick to respond to questions via email. His class is tough because the material is tough and there's a lot to learn. His lab quizzes are a little hard to study for because you don't know which angle he will take with them. Attend class and study, study, study.
AMAZING teacher!! Highly, Highly recommend! He is great to help you in anyway that he can. Makes lectures fun and easy to understand. His goal is to help you learn rather than just give you a grade. Really enjoyed his class!!! I also recommend attending his workshops!
Jed is a great prof. He is passionate about Biology. If you need help on the assignments, he is there to help you. Jed tries to make things as clear as possible. He has powerpoint slides that you can study off of. The second slide of every one is "key concepts" - your study guide for the final. Tests are not super hard but you do need to study.
Jed is a nice dude. He spends lots of time reviewing, pay attention to what he reviews at the beginning of each class. You will need to STUDY to do well! He is willing to go over things multiple times although he is not always able to explain things more than one way. 3 tests, a final, and quizzes every other week. Tests mostly off powerpoint's.
Jed is tough grader, but he does slightly curb the 4 exams 1.8 points off for every question instead of 2 points off. some times he curbs quizzes 0.8 points off for every 1 point lost. he uses a 500 point scale 100 points comes from your lab. the 400 come from him he cuts your lowest exam score in half and drops your two lowest quizzes,
I took Professor Doelling in Summer 2016. He was great! Biology is just a hard class. You have to expect to study the material outside of class! He was always happy to answer questions and explain concepts over and over, again, for anyone who needed the extra help. He genuinely cares and wants his students to do well. He never does trick questions!
Summer semester is short, so a class like Biology is a massive info dump into the brain. Jed is awesome, he's always willing to take questions, explain things more than once, and work with you. But when he says the average grade is a C, that's the subject, not Jed. It's a tough class, be prepared to attend, listen, take notes, and study.
Jed is a nice and cool guy. Willing to go over topics if you are stuck in class. His class is of several quizzes, 4 tests w/final and the lab portion. Test are kinda hard if you dont study. He lectures off a powerpoint but take extra notes on what he says. He gives hints on what you should study for. be ready 2 study bc bio1610 is difficult 4 some
Very good teacher that knows the subject very well. He test what he lectures on and is willing to take time and answer questions in class. The key to passing is to attend class, know the material on the power points/lecture and do the study guides.
I took Dr. Jed over the summer of 2016. He's a very thorough lecturer and absolutely knows his stuff. If you come to class & pay attention you will do well on quizzes & tests. He offers reviews before each test which I highly suggest attending. He also allows for any questions to be asked before quizzes and exams. Great professor. I learned a lot.
Jed is way smart and if biology is your thing, then take this class. He's very clear with tests, reviews and homework. Willing to help out and answer any questions you my have. It is a tough class though, study well and do the homework.
Biology is a hard subject but Professor Doelling tries his best to help you understand biology concepts. The lectures can get kind of boring and there is a lot of material to study for the quizzes and tests. He tests from his PowerPoint lecture so textbook is not needed. Study and you should do fine. 7 quizzes but you can drop 2 and 4 big tests.
Jed is a great teacher. His lectures move at a quicker pace than other 1610 teachers. At times we were 5 chapters ahead of other classes. I felt he was very caring and he is always willing to listen. It is difficult to get an A in this class because of the few points there are. Go to the reviews and pay attention to detail it helps with the tests
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Takes time to explain everything. Does review and answers question before every test and quiz and goes through all the correct answers after.
Professor Jed is amazing. I was nervous about taking this class, after hearing how tough it was. Jed made this class great. He explained everything that our classed asked and often drew pictures to help explain. Attendance is not mandatory, however it helps to see him explain the concepts which can be challenging.
Definitely a smart teacher. Very hard tests, and he tells the class that the questions will cover anything over multiple chapters. It is not very specific and I always ended up studying the wrong things. Great for Biology Lovers, but if science is a foreign language, his class will be a struggle.
He is a great instructor. But the course is with lots busywork. There are weekly homeworks, quizzes and exams.
Professor Doelling knows his stuff and is more than happy to explain things that you don't really understand. He is quick to respond to emails. His homework is not to bad and if you study the book and listen to what he has to say for his lectures you will at do great. All around great Professor.
Jed is an awesome teacher!!!!! This is a hard class but he explains everything very clearly and is always available outside of class. You have to study hard for this class but he has an objective list on each powerpoint and if you study those you will do just fine.
Very intelligent teacher, he knows what he is talking about. Lecture heavy but does give tips throughout his lectures of what you SHOULD remember and these are always on his tests, quizzes. 4 total tests, 7 quizzes, he drops the lowest 2 quizzes. Offers extra credit. Strongly recommend reading textbook chapter or review his slideshows prior to class
This was my second time taking this class. He went really slow which is good if you need more time to absorb the topic. The powerpoints had enough info that I didn't need the book. 2 extra credit opportunities, a test or quiz almost every week. Highly flexible if I needed to move my testing day.
Jedediah lectures a lot but it all pertains to the chapter we are on, the tests are all based on his slides and textbook, no surprises. There are two extra credit options and very few assignments. Your grade depends on quizzes and tests but he drops 2 low quizzes and curves the tests based on average. Read, study, look at slides & youll do fine.
Dr. Jed has a dry sense of humor but if you can understand that, then you will do fine. He is very nice and willing to help. He lectures at a slower pace but the best thing about his class is that he is straight forward and there are NO trick questions on the test. If you follow his slides and study guides, you will do fine.
Dr. Doelling is nice and approachable, but also robotic and dry at times. Biology is hard and he's 100% lecture. He moves quickly by default, but if you stop him to clarify something he'll take time to make sure you get it. Didn't use the book one bit. Attendance and participation aren't graded but you won't pass without going and asking questions.
Epicness
He is a great professor who knows his stuff. He cares about his students and wants each of them to succeed. I had to do a lot of studying outside of class. Probably won't need the book as long as you take notes in class, and look through his power points.
Coming into this class I knew it would be tough. However, the tests are ridiculously hard and he doesn't offer lots of extra credit. Would recommend reading the chapters prior to lecture because I found myself confused a lot. Overall a great professor! You can tell he wants you to learn and understand the information.
You have to enter this class with the mindset that its going to be hard. You absolutely must study in your own time. Textbook is unnecessary b/c his powerpoints & lectures were very helpful. A knowledgeable guy who can actually teach. Review sessions were held for every test (optional). For visual learners, he draws models on the board.
Only read off the powerpoints and didnt lecture on anything that was on the test
I love Dr. Jed. Now, a heads up, he is a very dry guy.. and frankly Biology is a dry subject. BUT the he knows is stuff and isn't out to wave around his scholarly power. He does move fast so pay attention. Anything he repeats more than once WILL BE ON HIS TEST. If you take notes you will do fine. If you do his reviews, you will do fine.
Bio is a difficult class. Even though he gives out assignments that are meant to help you on tests/quizzes I felt like some of the things werent even on them. He also gives really long explainations for everything. I wish he could shorten it/make it simpler. He sure does know his stuff but overall this class was really hard for me
If you're worried about passing this class take it from this teacher. I've taken it from 2 others and he was the only one that made it make sense. His time management is great, he's a fair grader, and tests on an understandable level. There is some homework but it's helpful and not too heavily weighted. Class can be boring but that's expected.
Nice guy but his teaching style is extremely bland. It's very hard to understand the material the way he presents it. He talks to the class like they are already proficient in the subject material. His quizzes and tests are very tricky and challenging. Get ready for two tests on the last day. He also doesn't curve overall class grade. Yikes.
It's a very material heavy class no matter who you take it from, but he is amazing and wants to help you. He gives you all the information you need to know to do well in his power points on canvas. In his lectures he will always mention specifics on what will be tested so attendance is key. He does a small review session before quizzes and tests.
all of the information you need to know is on the lecture slides so dont bother buying the textbook. Youll need to study all material on slides and do all of the vocab/ section assignments. Gives 2 extra credit opportunities and drops your lowest 2 test scores and 1/2s lowest test score. Amazing professor.
Test heavy, but a lot of questions like the ones on the test are found on quizzes & homework. If he mentions something multiple times in a lecture, it's likely on the test. 20% of the grade is from the lab. Each test has up to 4 extra points, and he offers extra credit in the form of office visits. Excited to take him when I take genetics!!
Jed is interesting & organized. He obviously knows his stuff but hes also great at teaching it. Lectures are interesting. Its a hard class. Youll have to study for quizzes & tests. But I really wish he could teach all of my classes.
This class is difficult but doelling made it so much more enjoyable! He really cares about his students. His lectures were awesome and understandable. Doesn't give a ton of homework, no busy work. I typed notes as I listened to his lectures, went to workshops and got tutoring help and I got an A!! Go to his test reviews and you'll be golden!!
Jed is nice and helpful in clarifying tough concepts , Make sure to read and review his slides before class, it can be a little overwhelming at times but if you understand it will be good. Exams can be a little challenging because you wont know what exactly youll be tested on, Study and give it your all! Do NOT memorize , focus in understanding.
Professor Jed is an amazing instructor. Be ready to cover lots of chapters during that semester. Through his lectures you can tell he wants his student to learn and understand the concepts, but it could get overwhelming at times. His text are really tough, and I would advise y'all to take advantage of the extra credit. YOU'LL NEED IT.
Jed was a great teacher. He knows his stuff. His tests are HARD, but he does extra credit, lets you take each quiz twice, and responds quickly to emails. I've enjoyed this semester.
Prof Doelling loves what he teaches and you can tell. He does a really good job engaging with the class and being available for help and questions and really wants you to succeed! However, his tests are VERY difficult! You have to be really self-driven to learn and study concepts on your own, as he does not teach you enough to pass the tests.
Prof. Jedediah Doelling is the hardest teacher to comprehend, every time he would teach us through the computer, it was like talking to a robot who didn't know anything about College Biology. I think this is because I took Jedediah online and during the summer, so the concepts were really rushed at us. I prefer another teacher than Mr. Jedediah.
Honestly, I think this class would be great in person. But the online summer semester has sucked. Everything was good except the amount of info you need to sift through. Each chapter has a PowerPoint, online class, and textbook reading. Very nice for diversification but ridiculous when it comes to tests and remembering small details.
Summer semester -Do NOT take this course online!!! Professor is incredibly intelligent, however does not know how to help students understand concepts. Test are VERY difficult. get ready to cry! The mean average for testing was 60%. Resorted to more outside help, than course help. Spent 6-10 hrs a day on this class. Lab useless with this class.
by far the hardest class I have ever taken! The test are unbelievably difficult, to the point you are not even sure you studied the same information you're being tested on. Study guides are not helpful at all. You WILL NEED A TUTOR if taking this class from him. He does not know how convey information in terms that are understandable.
I loved this class and I have so much respect for Professor Jed. I took this class online but I can tell how much he cares about his students. You HAVE to work for your credit but it wasnt that hard. I spent 8-10 hours per week to study and I got an A. He also gives extra credits and 2 attempts for quizzes. Definitely would take him again.
If I can take him for all my Biology classes I WOULD. Take his class, you wont regret it. Extra credits, 2 attempts for quizzes, even if you turned in your assignments late with a good reason hes fine with it, too. All he wants is for you to understand the lectures and pass this class. Professor Jed, if youre reading this, thank you so much.
Professor Doelling really cares for his students. I was falling behind and decided I couldn't finish but Dr. Doelling emailed me and inspired me to continue. We meet over Zoom and he spent hours with me to help me get caught up. He wants all his students to be successful. He will always take time to help his students.
He's an old-school guy who wants all exams done in person.
Lecture heavy but an easy class. He had all the powerpoints from class available on canvas which is nice so in class I could focus on the lecture and take extra notes after. The class is pretty easy of you put in the work. Tons of extra credit opportunities and you have a whole week to do the homework and 2 chances for each quiz. Great class!!
Professor Doelling is a class act, direct and professional in his craft. The course piggybacks off of a textbook but I found halfway through the course that I learned more from the online powerpoints as well as in class lectures. Participate in this class. Ask all of the questions because Jed will make sure that you understand. Great class.
Prof. Doelling was such an amazing teacher to have! I took his class as a high school junior last year, and I was able to pass with a B. He leads lectures every class and then has you do a worksheet along with some reading. Lots of opportunity for questions and even went out of his way to make sure I could find another time to take the test.
Professor does lecture fast which can be difficult to catch up if you miss class but is overall a great professor and will always ask if any one has questions and goes out of his way to help you.
Prof. Doelling's lectures are very good imo, he simplifies all of the subjects down so even if you're clueless you can understand. One assignment and quiz for every chapter, usually 2 chapters covered in a week. Quizzes are open book and you get 2 attempts. His exams are easy. He drops lowest scoring quiz, exam, and assignment for your final grade.
Jed is a great guy! Loved his class. The lectures can be pretty intense, and they drag quite a bit sometimes. He gives two short assignments, and two short quizzes per week. I did not spend much time on those at all. You do need to study for his tests though, because they were pretty tough. Good luck!
Professor Doelling is a genuine hard working dude! He's totally the go to teacher for biology and genetics. HE NEEDS A PAY RAISE!!!! Totally awesome. I'm not the best at science but Doelling helped me get a B instead of and F. Totally amazing totes recommend!!!
Dr. Doelling is a very chill dude. He helps students outside of class he really wants his students to succeed. While his grading is strict he is really nice and helpful!
I was so nervous for this class. I haven't taken any sciences since high school & I've heard Bio is heavy..all I can say is take his class. He simplifies all the information using analogies & is incredibly straight forward with what you need to know. Got 102% on exam cuz of extra credit & have 105% in course. Genuine guy & cares about his students.
Great professor. Actually cares about his students and their successes
This class involves A TON of material. I often found it difficult to understand. I don't feel that it was Jed's fault though. He did a great job with the lectures and ultimately those were the reason that I passed with an A. I would recommend keeping a high grade throughout the class so it is easier to bring your grade down than up at the end.
Do not take this class unless you are prepared to be there for most to all the classes. With that said, I usually understood what to do in the lab but most the time did not understand the reasoning or purpose. I appreciate Jed and his commitment but feel that the material needs more explanation to pass the quizzes (they make up most of your grade).
Great guy! Didn't make you feel dumb when answering questions, made real life connections with the course. Many extra credit options available. Take Bio with this guy.
Great teacher, though subject. Professor Doelling is extremely smart but also very helpful. He uses every minute of class and is very passionate about his subject. Take your time to study the concepts and you will do great
I absolutely loved taking biology 1610 from Jed. Going into the class I was nervous, because I had heard biology was hard. But, by reading the textbook and attending lecture I was able to understand all the concepts. Jed was great at giving pointers for how to remember things and made it clear what was most important to remember.
Professor Doelling is a great teacher! He is very kind, and has open office hours after class. He uses some dry humor which is really funny.
This teacher is pretty awesome! He does have pre-class and post-class quizzes after every class, which can be a handful, but it's nothing too difficult. Exams are pretty annoying depending of if you studied the right material (speaking from my own experience). Signature assignments, yes. But if your ever stuck on it, he will help.
Professor Doelling is passionate and knowledgeable, but the course moved very quickly. Some topics felt rushed or unclear. Study guides didn't always help much—I think vocabulary lists or clearer resources would improve the experience. Still, he clearly cares about the subject.
Professor Doelling is very knowledgeable and passionate about biology. The class moves fast and can feel overwhelming at times. Some topics could use more explanation, and better study tools would help. Still, he clearly cares about the subject and his students.
The professor is amazing and cares about each student. It's clear that he loves his subject and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. Thanks to him, studying became not just a task, but a real pleasure! The subject is hard and it has a lot of quizzes and signature assignments. You need to learn a lot of material.
I wish there were other professors that taught genetics at SLCC. This professor has a horribly structured class. He does NOT teach during his lectures, just simply bombards you with examples of problems dealing with concepts you don't have any knowledge on. His tests are hard and he is an extremely critical grader. Future students beware.
he cares about the class but it shows that not everyone can be a great teacher, he is extremely dry when giving lecture similar to a AI online lecture, his tests are hard, does not offer almost any extra credit but is somewhat forgiving with some stuff. I would not take unless you have to and there is no good study guide to help you prepare so yeah
This dude is funny, he lectures a lot more then most but they are stacked with all the information you need to get an A and he sneaks in a few dry wise cracks which make them entertaining. if you want to learn take him, free A? find another professor
If another professor was available for this class, I would say take someone else. This professor needs to reduce the content of his class, clearly he is very passionate about Genetics, but his lectures are just information vomit. His tests are so jam packed you almost miss questions because there are so many on one page. Worst class / Prof at SLCC
Dr Doelling is a great teacher! I took some other bio teachers and none was better than this guy. Work is really hard, but he loves helping students out. Recommend using his office hours as some one on one time can really help. Labs are really fun, and he does a better job explaining what to do and why it matters during labs than other proffesors.
This class is great, but there are SO many quizzes. Two quizzes MINIMUM per class day. If you stay on top of your homework, you will do great. Take advantage of the pre class quiz unlimited attempts. The professor is really kind, funny, and was always willing to help.
