Talks too much about himself, often gets confused about what hes teaching and cant seem to explain something in a non-confusing manner. Exams are brutal, good luck.
Prof Ackerman is very passionate and knowledgable about economics. The lectures are very good and he has amazing slides, but sitting in on lectures is not enough to succeeding in the course: there are lots of online Connect homework assignments and tests are very challenging. Overall, good guy and very generous overall course grade curve.
Professor Ackermann is a real gem. I switched and put myself in his EC 202 next semester. TopHat mandatory every class but curves your attendance grade 10%. Posts tons of practice problems and most appear on his exams. You can drop one exam out of the 3 (includes final). Super funny guy and really cares about his students. Curves the class too!
biggest piece of advice for this class is to keep up with practicing the concepts because everything builds on each other and it can get very confusing very quickly. Actually attempt to do the homework and definitely do the practice problems that he provides! These problems are very similar or even the same as the questions that are on the exams
Class is hard but also a joke. For Fall 2019 the curve on the class was massive because of how bad students were doing. For example you only needed a 84% in the class to 4.0. but getting the 84% was challenging. Im a above average student, study well and hard, an i only managed to 3.5 the class. 3.5 isn't terrible but expected to do better.
We can drop one test but honestly his tests aren't like his review guides and its ridiculous. He gives super easy examples in class then on the test they are nothing like the study guide. He's a cool teacher but there is so much he could do to improve on teaching including examples, gibing hw that actually helps us learn, improve how he explains.
I really like him as a person. Tries to be different than other econ profs for 202 because he gives more credit for participation and homework. This doesn't offset the fact that the exams are 30 questions long and you only have 50 minutes to do it. Everyone pretty much fails them. If you're 1% away from a higher grade, he isn't going to round it.
Professor Ackermann is a nice guy, but very unprofessional. He deviates from lecture way too much and doesn't clearly explain what he's teaching. I recommend reviewing the TopHat questions more than the Connect ones. Also, get a tutor and visit the TA's office hours for real help.
Great guy. Down to earth, friendly, very positive and upbeat. Makes lectures fun and engaging. Ties in current events and news while staying apolitical, makes interesting TopHat polls. People complaining about the difficulty are the ones skipping or on their phones. Show up, pay attention, do the work, and you will do well
He wants everyone to succeed! Great professor, I enjoyed his class because lectures did not feel like classic boring lectures.
Prof. Ackermann is a good guy but a bad teacher. 2 tests count for 70% of your overall grade. He wants to do his best, but he just isn't a very effective teacher. You have to study his graphs and equations if you want to do good on tests.
Awesome guy. Funny, accessible outside of class, and really wants you to succeed. For a class of 400+ students you really feel like you know him well. Microecon is never fun but so long as you put in the time and use the many resources he makes available, you're alright. He explains tough concepts well and can adjust accordingly. Great professor.
Ackermann is a really funny and caring professor. He tries his hardest to make his lectures interesting and funny and likes to interact with the class (even online classes). That being said, he gets off topic quite often, making it difficult to follow the lecture. He also does not go into much detail on the topic covered in class. Teach yourself!
I liked Econ with Prof. Ackermann. I think he explains concepts in a good way and cares about his students. He uses tophat to ensure you're attending class, but they're participation- based so it's a good way to get some free points. I thought the final was a bit difficult, but overall I enjoyed class and would take another class with him.
Professor Ackermann was one of my only professors that was able to make online learning really interesting. He was always available to help outside of class, but do keep in mind that there are 2000+ students just in macro, and he also teaches micro. If you need to take an econ class be sure to have Ackermann as a professor!
A great professor. Keeps class interesting and engaging. Never asks too much and anyone can do well.
Professor Ackermann is a really fun professor, especially for a subject that can be boring. He does give out lots of homework at some points, but it's not very hard and is easy to get done. He's very friendly and wants everyone to pass, so I would absolutely take any of his classes if you can!
The midterms will hit hard but it's a manageable grading scale and he was very generous with giving extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester as long as you have put in the work prior in the semester.
Professor Ackermann is a really good choice for EC 201 compared to any other economics teacher at MSU from what I have heard. He makes his lectures very interesting and provides you the right resources to succeed on exams. He posts practice problems that are very reflective of the exams. Homework can be a bit too much but its still manageable.
Easy 4.0 class. Professor Ackermann's lectures were simple and easy to understand. Show up to class because he uses iClicker questions for attendance. Lots of homework but he gives you plenty of time to do it. I would definitely take him again.
Some love him, some hate him. I think he has a good personality to match the entry-level content. If his lectures confuse you, look back at the textbook definitions and you'll probably be fine. He stays after class for a few minutes so it is easy to ask questions from the hw and get a deeper explanation.
Jeff is a gem. Econ can be very boring but he tries his best, even in the lecture I felt like he cared for me and my grade. He is very good at explaining things, so if you are confused GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. I wouldn't choose another prof over him.
One of my favorite professors this semester. He may have had heavy lectures, but they were easy to follow. He also gave quite a big amount of hw, but it was manageable. Plus, he understood all our circumstances and a month into the semester, he dropped more assignments, and let us bring cheat sheets into exams. Gives good review packets for exams.
He never got back to emails. Very unorganized. There were 3 exams and a final, lowest exam grade drops so if you are ok with your grade before the final, you dont have to take the final. Lectures are not easy to understand.
For all the classes taken at MSU, both Ec 201 and 202 were the best classes I have ever taken. There are a ton of resources that are given within the class and if you put in the effort it will pay off. You'll learn a lot and have a lot of fun doing it. The goodbye song was the best by far and I was always excited to come to class.
Never watched any lecture videos and I did fine. Do the online exercises and google what you don't know. Lowest exam is dropped, which is a big bonus.
Prof. Ackermann is a good guy, EC201 and 202 aren't hard and he's really upfront with what you need to know for homework/tests so as long as you keep up with the homework you'll do fine in the class. He makes an effort to be fun and relatable so going to lecture is a good plan too, if you're able.
I took an asynchronous class with Ackermann and he was sometimes difficult to communicate with. The circumstances definitely didn't help, but sometimes it didn't seem like he prioritized his online students. The class itself is very homework heavy and is partially graded on correctness. Exams are pretty standard.
Great professor! Material is not easy but he is a good teacher. Do the practice problems and go to class and you'll do well.
Ackermann is a weird dude but he is good at explaining concepts. You can tell he really enjoys his job. He says the textbook is needed but you really just need access to the online homework. The course is pretty straightforward and as long as you do some practice problems before the exams they end up being pretty easy.
loved him!!! very difficult exams, but fair
good guy, would recommend
Exceptionally nice person, and genuinely tried to get to know the students who made the effort to show up, despite that it was a huge lecture hall. Course wasn't super super easy (he did not pull his punches on the exams) but if you show up to the lectures and take notes you'll be just fine.
if you can take econ with any prof choose Ackerman! he explains difficult concepts in such an easy way his lectures are amazing never zoned out the entire semester
This is the best micro professor at MSU, no doubt about it. Tests are easy if you take the problem sets seriously and do the practice exam. Lectures were engaging and extremely concise, almost zero bloat in the course. Homework outside class was minimal, no more than an hour a week on non-exam weeks.
His class was relatively okay, it was lecture heavy and we had top hat in class participation points but it was just for completion, we had problem sets for each chapter but they arent terrible. 3 exams, and he drops the lowest one, funny prof which made his 9am not terrible
He uses clear and relatable examples in class and really as long as you pay attention, attend, and participate, you should be fine. He gives 2-3 problem sets per week/two weeks, and pulls some exam questions from those sets. If you're confused on some of the questions, he wont give you the answer, but he will explain them really well! GREAT PROF!
Professor Ackermann is a passionate professor that cares about his job and students. However, he oversimplifies and under-explains material. I felt that I was always lacking the "why." Furthermore, his meta-level approach to economics undercuts the actualities of the world around us.
This class overall sucked, the exams were nothing like the practice sheets or the lectures, this teacher is hard to reach, because if you have a question, they will just email back look at the syllabus. Homework is 100% as long as you do it. There is still a good chance you will pass, but not with a great score.
Is not very available outside of class, and when you do meet with him he rushes you out of his office. His grading policy is extremely tight, and says in the syllabus that even if you have a 81.99 he won't round you up. Very unreasonable and not a very compassionate person. When he describes concepts to you, he just pulls up the slide show.
Professor Ackermann is a funny guy but when it comes down to success in this class I think he falls a little short. There are 3 30-question tests, two of which count towards your final grade weighted at 70%. If you're a bad test taker I strongly recommend staying away. He makes lectures somewhat relatable to things that apply in today's world.
The exams were lockdown and the questions were all worded funky. He offered office hours but it was hard to get questoins answered. I would have liked to not take it but it was nice that if you did well on both midterms that you could just drop the final. Just buy the book through Macmillan and not the school bookstore. Might like it more in person
I did ECO 201 online, and at the beginning of the semester Ackermann threw all his notes and powerpoints on D2L, and that was the end of his teaching for the semester. You will be required to learn it all on your own with no lectures or Zoom meetings. Hands down worst professor I have ever had.
Talks a lot in lectures, gets off topic really fast. Do the homework if you want to do well. Exams are heavy, make sure you do well on the first two so you can drop the final exam.
Lectures were fun and he uses TopHat to track attendance Homework assignments are easy as long as you pay a bit of attention in class Tests are just like the homework, if you can review your homework you are almost guaranteed a good grade
Do not take Ackermann online if you want to understand the content and actually learn anything.
This is the only review you really need. The homework and tophat during class take up 40% of your grade. you can drop one test. tests are identical to the homework so review those. funny but could be a little better at explaining. Would recommend. Hard to fail this clas. get 100 on everything youll 4.0 with a E on Exam 3 and can skip the last exam
Professor Ackermann is a seemingly funny and nice guy, but I'd never take his class again. Nobody knows what he's talking about. The clicker questions show that based on the fact that the answers are always all over the place. Often overcomplicates the material to the max, both in class and on exams. I hope he shows this rating to his lectures
Jeff is an awesome professor, but because I did the course online I didn't really have the chance to connect with him. The coursework is honestly kind of difficult, even with the lectures and the homework assignments. Because you can't really ask questions with classmates or the professor, you really struggle to get the concepts.
You can tell he's passionate, but doesn't do a great job at explaining and tries to be in college again... WELL anyways you probably can't avoid him... so do the homework and try to understand those, as it's the same type of questions on exams. Oh you can also drop one (if you do well enough on the first three). but try to go to class.
Last economics class I had a lot of trouble getting ahold of the TA. So when a problem arose in this class and it was about an assignment due in a day, I decided to reach out to Jeff directly so I could turn it in on time instead of waiting days for a TA. Jeff responded with a paragraph telling me to contact the TA instead of him with no answer.
Very difficult if you aren't interested in economics. Lots of regularly scheduled homework but manageable. There's a workbook that he recommends you buy but I handwrote notes and managed a 3.0. Hardest part of class is motivating yourself to go to a lecture that he makes feel like a high school environment.
Do not take this class unless it is your only option. Extremely difficult with no help from either the Prof or TA. I got nothing from this class and it was honestly a waste of time and money. He adjusted the schedule due to the events at MSU but still didn't do as much as other professors.
His lectures were really awesome, he explains problems is very helpful. The textbook is also really great, it follows the lecture almost 1:1 and it has you fill in some information. There are a ton of resources like practice problems with explanations and videos. If you show up, do the practice problems, and review what you missed you will pass.
I took asynchronous EC 202, and I enjoyed it more than in-person, and will be doing 201 online as well. I found the online version very helpful in that you can work at your own pace, have 1 assignment due at the same time every week, and take the tests from your room. The policies are generous and fair, and expectations are laid out.
This class is HARD. I needed it as a prerequisite for my minor and I wish I didn't. It brought down my GPA because you are only graded on quizzes and tests and the tests are extremely difficult compared to the quizzes. Some questions are easy give aways, but then random topics get tossed in and make you fail.
I think that he is a good professor it was just hard to focus on the course since I took it online. The practice problems just weren't like the tests. I also took macro before micro so I don't know if that made a difference. Overall I think he is a good professor you just need to watch the lectures, spread the coursework out, and study.
Terrible. Expect one-word, vague, and unhelpful responses to questions. He is immature, rude, and does not respect his students. It's an unpleasant experience to attend his in-person lectures and encounter him face to face. He cares more about inflating his ego than helping students learn; I recommend taking EC 202 online if he is your professor.
Good professor. Posts slides online, and multiple prep materials for each exam (questions on prep were extremely similar to exams). Any difficulties I had were from the content, and not the professor. Would recommend for sure.
Great professor. Homework and exams are not bad. You can tell he cares a lot about the course.
I'm not sure if the course work was just hard to grasp or if it was just hard to learn. There are recorded lectures and then homework assignment(s) due every Wednesday. Exams are pretty similar to the HW. You are only graded on homework and exams. The homeworks are basically quizzes bc you only get one attempt and some of the questions are confusing.
Ackermann acts nice in lecture, but is pretty rude if you try and go to him for help. He explains things in a way that feels belittling, and. I never felt comfortable asking him a question. For homeworks and exams, he writes the questions, and they are not easy. It is hard to study for exams outside of the stuff he gives you. Beware of the tutors
Ackerman is a really cool guy, he cares about his students and wants his students to succeed. He tries to have interesting lectures to keep you entertained and teaches in a very comprehensive way. I am planning on taking his 202 class because of how well he taught the curriculum.
Overall a hard class, but help room, lecture videos, and textbook work can help.
You can drop 1/4 exams. Study hard and you can get the grade you want. A couple of homework assignments each week and a few hours of video lectures. You can drop 3 homework assignments. Prof was nice and lectures made sense.
Ackermann is a good prof who knows what he's talking about but you need to be able to learn on your own to be successful in the class. You can't just wing exams but go to the helprooms they're more helpful than anything.
I had Ackerman for EC 202 online last semester and EC 201 in person this semester. I recommend taking it in person and attending lectures if you struggle with time management in online courses. To succeed on exams you must understand the content you are learning and it is almost impossible to do well by cramming since the study guide is different.
The way he teaches the material is fine, not particularly outstanding. Video lectures were simply old zoom recordings. Worst part is how inconsist the video and sound quality of lectures is. Few were high quality, some were ok, many terrible. For an A: 1. Ignore Lectures 2. Watch Jacob Clifford Economics 3. Go by each section of the textbook
Enthusiastic about econ, teaches concepts well and makes them fun. Fill in the blank notes are provided too. Homework took about 20 minutes per week, and that is the only work i did for this class besides attending classes and studying. Exams were a little difficult, but very manageable. You also get drops which helps a ton.
Ackerman was a funny guy who made lectures pretty fun to be at. He dumbs down economics and makes it easy for non-econ people. tophat is required and so is macmillon achieve. Homework wasnt hard but tests have majority of the weight for your final grade.
His class is test-heavy, and the tests are hard. The average test score is never more than 75%. He is good when he does his lectures, but he is not easy to work with, and, most of the time, won't help you if you need any help. unfortunate for sure.
Was entertaining and made lectures more fun. Uses TopHat during class so make sure to show up for easy points. The exams were difficult, but he has a lot of materials including the homework that can help you study for them, and a lot of the practice questions are similar to the actual exam.
It was a good class but the exams were harder, though.
Professor Ackermann was hand-down the funniest professor I've ever had. My top highlight was when he asked an open-ended negative externalities question about the worth thing our roommate has ever done. After submitting my response, my roommate chased me out of class, which ultimately resulted in me being able to finally switch roommates.
I liked the class however I will never take an online Econ class ever again, I did not learn anything and I still got a 4.0. Definitely recommend in person lectures if you Wanna learn about your major.
I didn't like this class, would not recommend it
For an online class it was fine. I already took AP Macro in hs but didn't get the credit so I had to take it again. I wouldn't take this class until you take EC201 since most of the first and second units are based off that content as review. Exams were ok. You get an exam drop out of the three exams plus the final so I skipped out on the final.
His online course was not my favorite, so I would suggest taking him in person since I've heard great things about him. The online course just lacked a personal connection which made it easier to get boring. He dropped 3/4 homework and even an exam so that helped my grade since the material can be hard to grasp over videos/slides.
Ackermann is a very funny, smart guy. I took him online but it seems he knows how to engage his students with his examples and in class questions. Warning: Do Not Buy Textbook. There is no reading for the class and it is very expensive. There's also a good shot that his already generous online grading curve may be lowered again, but still study up.
One of my favorite professors, was very funny and made lectures fun. Online questions were given during class so make sure to show up for easy points. Homework was pretty easy as long as you had the notes. Exams were easy as long as you actually did the notes and homework. Homework questions were very similar to exam questions.
Great guy, very well spoken, lectures are clear and concise. Grading criteria and homework are very simple and clear. If you go to his office hours every so often he is a lot of help. Office hours and practice problems in his classes are the key to an easy 4.0!
i love ackermann he's so silly. i have him online and even though online classes aren't usually ideal for me, i would rather have him online than a different professor in person. the lectures actually make sense, and he provides good resources like fill in the blank notes, along with accessible office hours. everybody loves this man for a reason!
Typical tenure professor -- recycles the same video lectures, wants you emailing his TA instead of him, etc. Beware that he has a history of changing course cutoffs at the END of the course to make his teaching skills seem more impactful.
I found success in this class by completing the homework and attending help rooms. The resources are there for success, highly recommend taking advantage of them!
Prof. Ackermann was great! I highly recommend taking his classes; he is super chill & funny and teaches great. 4 exams, including the final, with one drop(all MCQ). Not very homework heavy and he usually extends the deadlines. Good Luck!
Honestly it's a whatever class, I can't claim bias or anything, but like I showed up, 3rd row to front, quiet, attentively. But its like every interaction is lol why do you like hate me. Like I just take it personal sometimes and couldn't help but feel like rip me. Like idk I think he's rude and bald sorry.
Ackermann is a hilarious guy and tries to keep up with the trends. Although his class is incredibly hard, you can't hate the guy because he is so funny and caring.
not a lot of homework, you watch lecture videos then have a few assignments each week. 4 exams and one is dropped. chill class but it's hard because you basically teach yourself. I've heard he isn't easy to go to for help though I never did. just stay on top of everything since there isn't much to be graded on or turn your grade around.
With little to no choice for an economics class, you will most likely get stuck with Ackermann. If this happens, I hope you are good at teaching yourself the entirety of microeconomics. Even with the video lectures, much is up to interpretation during the exams when you have to study eight different units for a single exam. Would not take again.
This class was extremely difficult. The professor is nice, but doesn't teach well, and I felt like I had to teach myself everything for the exams. The exams were very hard, and there were not many assignments to help balance your grade.
His class wasn't difficult per se. However, Professor Ackermann fought my RCPD coordinator on midterm extensions. I had life saving surgery, and only received a two-day extension for the first midterm. The work is definitely manageable, but his schedule is incredibly strict. Also, in-person exams for an online course are brutal. (EC 201 & 202)
very outgoing personality. His classes in-person vs online are basically the same (i took in-person but i have a friend who took it online), i would say his class in-person was easier because participation grade is easy credit (just show up for iclickers). I probably studied a combined 3 hours outside of lecture for the exams and still got 4.0.
DON'T TAKE MACRO FIRST! THIS WAS A MISTAKE! Ackermann always made the class fun and interesting, making me want to come to class every day. But man, he could NOT teach. He hardly goes over the content, often going on side tangents about family or the news. Be prepared to teach yourself and get yelled at if you email him if you're confused
He was good teacher. He was extremely helpful if you go to office hours. Top hats are included as attendance as completion not accuracy so that was amazing. He was really easy to talk to, fun and helpful. The practice test was almost exactly like the actual test. Make sure that's your main source of study material for 201.
Being a tenure professor goes a long way. Your TA's do all of your work for you while you sit back and watch students struggle!
It is hard to imagine that in our planetary system, there could exist a professor of economics who is both skilled and humorous to such an extent. Always the number 1 choice.
Not fair, other EC201 get cheatsheets and calculators and online courses with him don't it is so hard to understand.
I took this course over the summer for a major requirement. About what you can expect from an Econ teacher, however the class wasn't the most boring thing I've ever taken, I just don't have a passion for Econ. Micro was harder than macro in my opinion. Teacher was always available outside of class when i emailed for help.
Don't take, his videos are poor and not helpful. Use practice exams to study. Overall not a good teacher.
Don't listen to the negative reviews. He's genuinely a really good professor, his lectures were educational and he posts them all on D2L later. While there is a lot of weekly homework, and the tests are decently hard, he is a fair grader and lets you drop your 3 lowest homework assignments and lowest test. Also you only need a 88% for a 4.0, so...
Jeff is funny. The textbook that he assigns sucks though, and asks horrible questions, teaches nothing, costs more than its worth (which should be $0), and finally was broken for a good two months on Firefox. Class was overall worth it and iClicker for attendance only (not graded on correctness) is great. Cutoff for a 4.0 is an 88, not hard.
Wrong answers on practice assignments. Conflicting info between textbook/Connect/lectures. Connect hw was torture, sometimes you'd answer 100+ questions (2 hrs) for one chapter. Then go do his hw assignment & realize it's different. Tanked the final despite studying for 6 hrs for it bc the wording was confusing (also he was really noisy during it?)
Recorded lectures weren't great, most of the time it felt like he was phoning it in. Frequent typos and errors. Wording of questions bad on homework and worse on exams. The only reason I managed to get the grade I did was because I got tutoring twice a week and they were able to basically teach me instead. Also, no notes allowed for exams is insane
Ackermann is a funny and nice guy, clearly loves what he does. His lectures are good, nothing amazing, but the weekly homework assignments are lengthy. His 3 midterm exams and final exam were difficult, but doing the large amounts of practice questions definitely helped. I did bad on the final, and still ended with a 3.5.
I truly do not understand the complaints about Dr. Ackermann or his class. His lectures were entertaining and actually explained the material rather than rushing through it. The tests were very similar to the homework and practice tests, sometimes having identical questions. An 88 is an A and the lowest three homeworks and lowest test are dropped.
