Bad freshman writing teacher.Grades not your writing skills but on adherence to his theological ideas. He tries to teach theology more than writing (not his job). Corrects you through countless revisions, w/o progress. Mandatory WritingCenter for every paper The WC says our papers=good, he says "many problems". Cant give grade estimates. Confusing!
this guy is awful. i could not stand taking this course. he is the most unhelpful guy i have ever had. i did not learn a thing about writing in this class. It was all about his own stance on theology but nothing to do with writing. doesnt do his job well at all. very confusing about when stuff id due. the writing center appointments aren't needed
His first sem @ APU, trying to figure things out. Writing lots of papers at once = difficult but realistic to college. Some papers are fun but some are confusing. Tries to get you to revise your paper to his theology but hopefully that will change. In-class time not very productive, bring laptop to work on papers! Class is fun w/ good ppl.
Carter is horrible! Avoid him at all costs. Even my roommate was in shock at how many papers I had to write for that class. He's also really unclear on what he wants. Class time is basically sitting in groups or with him reading over the assigned paper and getting "feedback." It's an absolute joke because no one does it or pays attention.
Not so thrilled with this guy. Not a great teacher.
Took for Public Comm. Stupid class but he made the best of it. He was really ncie and always there to help. He made an extrememly boring subject, bareable. Definitly take him. Overall pretty easy class. Eneded with an A. Midterm and final EASY! He gives you the questions. Homework and quizzes easy. Just make sure to follow his directions in everyth
Great teacher....very helpful....made a scary class very comfortable
PRobably the worst professor that I had at APU. Terrible teacher
I was scared to death to speak in public---but this class made it much easier. Very nice prof, material was easy, good class.
nice guy! creates a friendly environment! very straightforward and honest! definitely helped to speak in front of people!
My favorite teacher so far in college...really cares about his students! He made a scary subject much easier to handle.
He's a good guy and really nurturing in that he makes it easy for his students to get into the swing of public speaking. However, there is a ton of mindless busy work. He gives you the answers for the tests. Gets the job done on getting you used to public speaking but the busy work is mind numbing and tough to remember.
Nice professor, but I found that a lot of the classwork we did was repetitive, unnecessary busy work. It is an easy class overall as long as you write decent speeches (around 4) and show up for class. The exams are EXTREMELY easy as long as you go over the study guide he gives you. I would take this class if you desire an easy passing grade!
hes a great teacher.
Carter is an okay professor. You do five speeches and have to read and take a quiz before every class. Two finals that are multiple choice that cover info from the textbook, but they are super easy. Class wasn't horrible. Carter isn't horrible.
Professor Carter is an extremely helpful teacher and this class was extremely easy. The book work is tedious but easy and you get to chose the speech topics.
Way too much homework that is completely pointless. Yeah he lets you choose your speech topics but the amount of "busy work" in this class is ridiculous. I'd avoid him because the amount of pointless homework is just ridiculous. I took this class as a junior and it has been the most homework since I have been at APU
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! as a required class there are plenty of better teachers. He makes public speaking far more difficult than it needs to be and dull as can be! The amount of busy work is ridiculous and the speeches are grueling.
Very strict grading on EVERYTHING, both the midterm and final were 100 questions on the reading which is a nightmare and you have worthless homework due for every chapter in the book. The reading doesn't match up with what you do, you have to write 2 papers for every speech, and feedback is almost nonexistent. Take ANYONE else.
SO much unnecessary and tedious homework. The homework was so repetitive and ridiculous. You have to buy online homework. Grades ok on speeches, tests are easy if you study. If you are in other heavy work-load classes, DO NOT take him. Nice guy though.
Totally take this guy. There is a lot of work but it actually helps. Really cares about his students. Makes it so relaxed, its fun.
He was the worst professor I have ever experienced at APU. He was extremely disrespectful to students he did't agree with and portrayed narrow-minded, judgmental Christian ideals. Many students left class feeling criticized and humiliated. He gives an excessive amount of busy work. He has not helped improve my public speaking ability at all.
Awesome teacher! Really makes sure you get it. Cares a lot about his students. You just have to follow directions and practice and getting an A is easy. I was totally freaking out about taking this class but now I actually enjoy public speaking.
What an amazing professor. He took extra time outside of class to help me work on my delivery. And also talked with me about my faith. He helped me ask Jesus into my heart. Good class, great prof.
I just finished this class and surprisingly enjoyed it. I hate public speaking but this class was so relaxed that it was actually fun. There were a couple of students (whose comments are below) who clearly didn't do much work and so became spiteful toward the prof.--tried to ruin it for us. Otherwise it was a good class and a very caring teacher.
challenging class...but the prof made it so chill that it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. It was a good class and great professor.
loved this prof!! Can't stand giving speeches but this class was cool. It wasn't so bad.
Really cant stand talking in front of people so i was dreading this class. Great prof made it easy and not so scary. You will work hard but he pushes you to do better.
This class just ended and I really enjoyed it. A little nervous about public speaking going in, but now its not so bad. Enjoyed the prof--made it very comfortable. A lot of work, but still a good class.
Great professor! Always there to help. really helped me thru stage fright--totally take this prof.
I've heard most of the speech profs here are not worth taking--this guy was good. He really wants you to improve. I really know how to give a speech now.
very laid back class--learned a lot. A lot of work but I really enjoyed it. The professor really cares!
I lose interest in a class when it seems like the profs don't care--but it was obvious that this guy really cared about me as a student--great prof!
Cool profesor-I kind of like public speaking now
I really liked this class. I wasn't afraid of public speaking but I learned a lot I can actually use. Cool prof--very supportive and caring. I recommend taking this class.
I loved the laid back atmosphere. It made the class enjoyable!
class was pretty good--loved the professor
Great Prof...I actually learned a lot. So chill that I didn't have to stress over speeches.
Really helped me---took time outside of class to help with speech delivery. Really cares about his students.
Good guy--good class. You should take him.
I can't stand public speaking-until now. Now I'm not so scared. The professor really cares about his students. Follow instructions and getting an A is easy.
I really liked this teacher. I went to him for help and he showed he really cared about me.
If you can follow directions, you can get a good grade. I enjoyed the relaxed feel of the class. good prof.
Probably my favorite prof in college so far.
There is more homework/busy work in this class than there should be for a public speaking class.
This professor is the worst professor I've ever taken. He's a horrible public speaker himself and grades like he's the Queen of England. No one in our incredible class of public speakers has received an A yet. He gives obscene amounts of busy work, and through his 3 hour class rarely gives his students breaks. Waste of my time & most dreaded class.
This guy really cares about his students. I totally improved in this class and I'm not so scared anymore of speaking.
I really liked the relaxed feel of the class. Everyone got to know each other really well--which helped make speeches less scary. There's always one student who doesn't get it--but most of us loved this class.
I put off taking speech until my senior year--becuase I hate public speaking. But I actually enjoyed this class. very chill. I'm pretty comfortable in front speaking now.
I enjoyed this class a lot more than i thought I would. Really nice prof--wants to help you do well
Last day of class!!! I can't stand public speaking but this class was ok. Great prof--homework kept me busy.
I really enjoyed this class. The professor cares about his students and it shows. The process he uses to get his students comfortable speaking in front of others is very effective. I learned a lot and I highly recommend this prof.
Carter's class equals busy, busy, busy work. There is an unrealistic expectation for this general education class. About six to seven speeches, each which required an outline, online reflection paper/ peer review paper for each speech. 100 question midterm/ final. I was in the ER the day before and he still required me to come to class. Good luck.
Personally, I love public speaking and learned a few things about how I could improve and took this class because it's a GE. However, he's very disrespectful to students' beliefs and inconsiderate to those who are not Christian by displaying very narrow-minded conservative views. Expect busy and unnecessary work.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He assigns A TON of busy work online and takes little time in class to actually teach. He is also very harsh with grading. I tried to make an appointment with him to discuss a grade and he only offered me 5 minutes of his time. He will argue to no end and shows little respect for open-minded views. I would avoid if possible.
Even though there is a good amount of work, it is a good class. Carter is a really clear teacher and tells you exactly what you need to do to get a good grade. I asked for help outside of class and he was always there for me. really cares about his students!
Definitely take this class. Great prof.---really care about his students. I am much more comfortable giving presentations in front of people now.
I was not looking forward to this class. I hate public speaking. But this prof made it much more comfortable. He was very approachable and really helped me outside of class. If you do all the work you can get an A.
This was a good class. Everything is spelled out in the syllabus--all you have to do is follow directions to get an A. Speeches are graded pretty tough, but you definitely are pushed to get better. I was suprised how much I enjoyed this class.
Last day of class!!!! I am so glad this is over. I hate giving speeches. But I really did get more comfortable as the semester went along. This prof is very helpful and has set up a good system. I would recommend this class!
I really like this prof. He was laid back and didn't bore us with too many lectures. There were 5 speeches--one about every 3 weeks. Getting an A was not too hard, you just had to do the assignments. Directions were clear and he cared about us a lot, and it showed.
His class is really straight forward which is nice because you know what to expect. The homework is easy and not bad as long as you stay on top of it. It is not easy to get an A but a B is manageable. He isn't the nicest professor but I thought his class was easy for a GE.
Honestly I thought this would be a really dope class because of the good reviews... It wasn't. SO much busy work. He kind of has a narrow minded view towards religion, structure, and ideas. Overall a decent/bad class. Definitely would NEVER take him again for additional classes.
I didnt know what to expect. I had a friend who liked the class and had recommended it. But i hate giving speeches. But I actually ended up enjoying it. Friends who didn't try very hard didn't do well, but this prof really cares about his students.
This prof really took time outside of class to help me. I had a really tough semester and he was totally understanding.
Some of these reviews crack me up--this guy is so laid back. You learn how to give a good speech in this class and if you want more, he will totally help outside of class. I would totally take this guy again.
really good guy. he cares about his students--do the work and you can get an A.
What a great class. I was not looking forward to public speaking--but it was so laid back, I had fun.
Very straightforward. Do the work and you can get a good grade. Good class and good prof, cares for his students.
I really enjoyed this class. It was so relaxed. We all got better in our speeches and I don't dread speaking now.
Good class--good guy--seems to care a lot about students
good class---good prof. I would take him again.
I learned more about my faith in this class than I did in any theology class. This prof really shows what it means to live out your faith. really good class.
Defiantly take this class. I am so much more comfortable given presentations in class now. the teacher really cares about his students.
He's on a power trip, loves to enforce the department rules that competent teachers just ignore. He grades speeches on how willingly you submit to his authority / are a 'good Christain'. he assigns 100% busy work, no learning, makes you do stuff so he can tell you what to do. 5 difficulty cause my brain was literally shrinking doing the homework.
What a great class! This guy loves the Lord and it shows. this class was so chill--it didn't even seem like we were giving speeches. Do the work and you can get a good grade.
I love this guy. Really challenged us to think about our faith. I don't mind public speaking--learned a lot anyway.
I put off this class until my last semester. But was really surprised how much I enjoyed it. very lade back--it was actually fun
I DO NOT recommend taking him. It was a lot of busy work (in my opinion) and I did not learn anything. He taught a different way of public speaking that made everything extremely monotone, boring, and not-interesting whatsoever.I had a three hour class and he never let us out early.
What a great class. so chill! REally enjoyed the prof
At first I didn't really care about this class, but then I decided to really try and it turned out to be my favorite class. Take this prof, and take him up on grabbing coffee--he really does care for his students.
What I liked about this class was the prof really loves the Lord. it makes a big difference. It wasn't too hard either.
Great prof. good class. really easy to talk to
What I loved about this class is that we had to really examine what we believe and be able to express it. I know some of my friends who don't know where they stand with their faith really struggled with this, but then appreciated the chance to go through this. One of them even accepted Christ. This was one of the best classes I have taken so far.
I was so scared of giving speeches that I dreaded taking this class. But I'm so glad I took this one. He is so laid back and makes the class feel more like a family. It made gving speeches so much easier.
Good class. very relaxed approach to teaching this subject. He made everyone feel at ease. Loved being able to connect with him outside of class.
He is great ad giving really good advice for public speaking. However, in class, we are mainly focused on speeches in class, but after class we are constantly doing 2 chapters every week which is not a lot. The midterm and final are both 100 questions each and hardly remember the homework because I was mainly focused on my speeches.
my favorite profs are the ones who care about there students. this professor really cares about his students. He will meet with you, pray with you, and tells us all the time that he is here for us. I really liked this class.
I was so scared of taking this class, i didn't take it until my last semester here. But he made it so relaxed and chill that I actually enjoyed th class. Good prof, good class. he cares about his students!
Prof. Carter is a caring professor and is respected amongst students. His class is largely based on your own effort. You are expected to read and complete online modules that he rarely addresses. He did not lecture very much but did provide good feedback on speeches. Class environment was fun, but I didnt feel like there was much to learn.
One of the easier classes I have taken. My favorite times were grabbing coffee outside of class. He was so encouraging.
Once you figure out this is not the typical class where you sit and listen to boring lectures all day, it ends up being a fun class. It is a class where you practice giving speeches. You get better by practice, and watching others give speeches. It is a nice break from the normal kind of class
It was a good class and a really good prof. Helped me get over being scared of speaking.
I really miss this class. We got to know the other students in this class much more than in any other class I have taken. Even though I was terrified to give speeches it ended up being a fun experience.
good class--good prof--he actually cares about his students.
One of my favorite professors so far. I really don't freak out about public speaking anymore---good class!
One of my favorite classes so far!
i liked this class more than I thought I would--I was scared to death of speaking in public, but now I feel better about it.
It was so nice to not have another lecture class. In this class we did speeches and watched speeches and discussed them. It was obvious he really cared about us. He is also passionate about God.
I love prof Carter. He has helped me grow in my faith so much. you should meet with him for coffee--it's awesome to see a prof who cares so much for his students
Prof. Carter cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He tells you what you need to work on for next time and loves to meet with students. It is hard listening to one speech after another, but he rarely lectured which was nice (got out early). He gives easy online homework to help cushion your grade. Take him, and don't be scared!
It was awesome to get to know Prof Carter. He really wants to help us do better in our speeches and in life. He shares his faith all the time. I loved that this was not just another lecture kind of class. I feel much more confident about speaking now.
Even though attendance was mandatory i still enjoyed this class. I made some good friends here. we get to know each other really well. Pretty chill prof
Meh. It's not really the teacher. He's decent and nice enough. You'll have online homework and four speeches of varying lengths and topics (personal, spiritual, informative, persuasive). You pick a topic, you write an outline, you give a speech. Rinse and repeat. I'm not a big fan of giving speeches but this class is helping a bit.
Professor Carter hands out so much homework. He is absolutely the worst choice for COM111 Professor's.
Wasn't going to rate him but I wanted to warn you guys. Hands out a lot of busy work and thinks his class is a priority. He is a tough grader even though this is an intro speech class. He takes the class way too seriously Don't let the previous rating fool you. If you have to just agree with him but avoid this class if you can. Not worth your time.
Don 't let the negative reviews fool you. There is not that much homework. Adn it is not busy work. Carter is a good prof and a great guy. He really makes you figure out what you believe with your faith. this class was worth it just for that.
Really bad prof because he forces his ideals on you and if you don't agree with him he grades you down. Assignments are manageable but the hw and reading are worthless. He doesn't even address them and it's just busywork. He grades super hard and rarely gives anyone an A on the last two speeches because his expectations are high. Avoid him!
Worst Comm professor because of the way he acts and talks. Definitely conservative and not open-minded at all. Evident with the way he grades depending on how controversial your speeches are. Class is manageable but really annoying for a GE. Not my favorite class and textbook work he assigns is useless but easy. Not fun at all, but you can pass.
He's neither good or bad. He's okay but not really my personal favorite. He is nice and tries to make the class fun in the beginning, but he just made it super boring, and he enforced so many rules on how he wanted his speeches. Especially during the COVID crises!! he wasn't flexible at all, and he was just a jerk in general. Hw is easy tho.
It was hard doing the last half of this class online, but Carter made it easier. I was so afraid of public speaking at the beginning of the semester, now I'm a lot more comfortable. There was a bunch of work to do in this class but no more than most. But the prof really cares about his students. I would definitely taek him again.
Carter is a good guy. He cares about us. I had coffee with him and it was great. I got better at speeches too.
I loved this professor! He really wants to connect with his students and is always available for coffee. Take him up on it. I learned more about my faith in this speech class than I did in some of my theology classes. My personal testimony speech was one of my favorite all time assignments.
Great Professor! He is a really genuine guy and is there for his students. He is a great listener as well as speaker. Attendance is everything and he takes it very seriously. He is huge on communication so as long as you do that you will succeed. He is a passionate teacher and eases you into the speeches.
Best Comm professor. I loved it because you know what he believes. I can't stand teachers who are too afraid to take a stand. They just tell you what the options are. But Carter knows what he believes and tells you, and gives the evidence for it. This is a Christian school. I'm tired of wishy washy teachers who don't believe the Bible-but he does.
you should totally try to take this guy. He really cares. There is online homework which is easy and two tests. He explains everything clearly.
Here's the gist: He's a decent teacher. Straightforward, calm, and explains concepts well. There's online HW (not included in final grades) and two exams taken from HW. Four speeches to write and deliver. He will not rearrange any dates No extra credit. You also write critiques of your own and other student speeches (so you have to be in class).
I cant believe some of the comments below. There is a good amount of work in this class but its definitely not busy work. If you do the work you will get a good grade. So many of my friends are just lazy and want everything just handed to them. If you show up to class and participate, if you practice your speeches well this class is not hard at all
This was a good class. It's nice to have a prof that really cares about you and wants to help. If you show up and do the work you can get an A
I liked this class. Waited until my senior year to take it because I hate public speaking. But it wasn't as bad as I thought. The class is good, but the teacher is great. I had some really great conversations with him.
Just finished the online semester of this class. I wish we could have done it in person. But still a good class. really made me think!
Doing this class online sucked, but Carter made it bearable. I don't like giving speeches but I feel more confident now. Teacher is really easy to talk to.
In my experience, Prof Carter was quite challenging. Before taking his class, I was confident in my speech skills and still am, but it took time for me to understand his strict rubric. Also he does not hold back during the post-speech Q&A in front of the whole class. However, he is very accessible and will try to reason with you if you struggle.
