What is he talking about? A final exam in an English course?
Great guy, class is fun and interactive. Cassvan really just likes to moderate class discussions. Doesnt really read homework so dont work sohard just hand them in. 3-4 papers and no final exam. And how can you not like a 30yr+ who still plays videogames&
Great guy, fair grading, if you actually want to learn something- he's highly reccomended.
Good. Knows a lot but demands a lot too. Fair grader. Expect to do stuff if you're in his class. I'm happy with my grade but I woudln't call his class "enjoyable"
He is the worst English teacher so far. When he comes to class, he looks unprepared. At times, he can be intimidating. Whenever he speaks to you or questions you, he comes off as a snob. He also always seems unapproachable.
I disagree with the comment below. He is an excellent teacher, not only because he actually knows what he is talking about, but also because he attempts to expand your boundaries of thinking. He isn't easy, but I feel extremely intelligent and most importantly, felt as if I learned something useful.
I completely agree with the comment that Cassvan is the worst teacher.
Awesome Teacher, very easy, no work, easy A
he expects a lot of work and he is severly depressed. He thinks everything has sexual connotation and he makes poetry seem worse than it is, he picks bad reading material. puts students to sleep, takes shakespeare and murders it until students hate it.AVOid AT all costs. worships james joyce toomuch
Loving the class! Thanks for making poetry so exciting. I actually enjoy all the sexual connotations. James Joyce also turns me on! Thanks. Loving you! You are the greatest ENGLISH professor this college has.
Wonderful teacher. Sure, he's not easy, but you learn so much in his class. He's very laid back, but he really does teach very well. He might as well be a philosophy professor, because his insight into books are so profound.
HE IS OK.
Very intelligent and helpful.
He is a brilliant professor. Do the readings and you'll have a very enjoyable experience. He is quick with contemporary references as well as tangental literary references.
I have a newfound appreciation for professor cassvan. he is intelligent, interesting, and really a literary genius.
I saw him walking his dog once
very, very bright. love his wit. not too many understand him, i think he is a genius.

LMAO at all theze comments... he mad chill wit all of us students.. haha i noe that look he gives me like that "shaddap" one but he jus duz it cuz he enjoyz makin students feel stupid... BUT participatin will get u sumwhere def... jus pay attention and b interested in the material and u'll b fine!
I took 3 classes with Mr. Cassvan back when I was in college. He was an awesome professor and I learned a lot. He was always very helpful and gave good insight. Oh and I had such a crush on him :)
this class was very interesting.. he basically told you EVERYTHING about the poem and all you had to do was write it down.. there were 2 essays and a final... enjoyable class.. he did talk about sex a lot... lol
Professor Cassvan is a very cool guy. He's very witty and laid back. At the beginning of the semester, I thought he was very tough. But as the months progressed, I saw that he was very fair. He doesn't assign too much work. But make sure you read ALL the stories and write the journal entries on time.I recommend that everyone should take him.
this guy is best! he's so nice, helpful & clear with what he wants from his students. 2 essays, daily journals.. laid back.
Great teacher,at first I thought he was really mean and harsh on us.However, as time passed I realized he was really cool and sweet. He cares about all his students and wants them to do well. He focuses on two main authors,James Joyce and Franz Kafka, who were great writers. You will leave Cassvan's class learning alot of new interesting things.
He had us write a number of 1pg essays but they were no big deal. There was 1 paper that we had to write a draft of and there was a final. Overall, it's an easy class. He's a smart guy and was actually relatively interesting at times because he had unique insights into material. Make sure he knows who you are to get above a B+
While the subject material is great, the teacher seems like he wishes he were somewhere else. He tries to get the class to start running with the discussion, but can't get it off the ground, and instead we have these long, pregnant silences for a minute before he gets frustrated and starts plowing through the piece giving his own interpertations.
Prof. Cassvan's the greatest. Very informative and smart.

Cassvan is great! He knows what he's talking about and shares all his knowledge of Joyce and Kafka to his classes. He's also very smart and witty if you listen hard to his words.I learned to interpret Joyce and Kafka in a way that I was never able to do before this class. I can't wait to take his for English 252! :)
At first I wasn't crazy about him, but that changed. He's much nicer than he seems, and he's also fair. Good teacher. Take him.
Another p/t do nada shoddy adjunct. Nasty troll. Has a Napoleon complex. Allows too many student side conversations to go on. I wonder if him or his mommy had a hook with the hiring committee. Too bad Prof. Catherine McKenna isn't teaching this class. Perhaps the dept. can look into Prof. Epstein of the English Dept to teach this material instead.
I like listening to him. He is very intelligent and knows so much about everything he talks about. He picks interesting books/plays as well. Witty, charming, easy going and he makes me want to take another class of his. Cute with his scruffy "I dont care" demeanor. I recommend him only if you are willing to read and discuss.
If you do not like this guy or get a good grade from him, YOU ARE A RETARD! He is a brilliant man who has a great sense of humor and an easy going personality to boot. Do the readings, talk in class and hand in your work and you will do great. Wish there were more techers like him. He loves Movies and the Simpsons, and when connections are made.
The comments made by student that do not like him are silly little Freshman who still think that the teacher should hold their hand. Not Cassvan. He is Brilliant. Period. If you want to learn, Take his class. Because of him, I am hoked on Kafka and Joyce. Vey easy to talk to if you behave like an adult and DO THE WORK!! COLLEGE!! HELLO!!!!???
This guy knows *everything* about Celtic literature. Plus he makes modern connections with ancient texts. this class is a must if you are interested in Celtic lit.
Prof is really nice and helpful. He knows his****. Funny in class. I enjoyed listening to him read.
He happens to be very intelligent, but his lectures tends to be dry. Sometimes I got the feeling that he didn't think very much of his students like we are dumb. We are in college, trying to learn something, Duh! Anyway I do recommend his class, he requires some papers one midterm and one final.
A brilliant practicioner in his field, one wonders why he has not received a PhD yet. Could be the crappy salary CUNY pays its lecturers. Cassvan is THE subject matter expert in Celtic literature. Take him...just remember...it takes a few classes to understand his sense of humor.
He is the best professor at Queens, hands down. I would take him for every class if I could. He is funny, connects the literary works to things that wouldn't normally be associated. If you screw up his class it is because you are LAZY! I learned so much from classes I have taken with him. I love this guy.
Lecture dragged on from time to time, but let's face it, folks: pre-1900s poetry is a somewhat dry topic to begin with. Totally different guy 1:1 (nice) than when he is lecturing to the class (not very nice). Keep contact with him outside of class. And he gave me a B for doing minimal work and being absent from about one-third of the classes!
he is a great professor! i was apprehensive about poetry before taking his class. he really breaks it down for you and is laid back. he's fair and his knowledge on poetry is extensive.
He looks like he just rolled out of bed and into the classroom, but once he wakes up (and you wake up), the class is actually really interesting and informative. I'm a Drama major, so discussing Ibsen and John Millington Synge (who I'd never read) with an extremely intelligent professor for two hours was a blast. And the papers weren't bad, either.
An amazing teacher, he takes attendance until the end, until about a week or 2 before finals. He's usually a couple of minutes late. I would definetely recommend him to anyone who enjoys reading alot of works, cause if you don't enjoy it, all the info wont stick so wel; and he tells you whats going to be on the tests before hand. Good luck.
Fabulous professor. Connects pop culture to literature and poetry in a way that helps draw the pictures. Great sense of humor. Highly recommended.
he is the best ! fun to have cigarettes with, fun to go to the bar with, grades fair as long as u make sense, he literally reads the literature to u, so u have to be stupid to not understand the class. just show up and make him remember u! i took him 4 times, hes great
His classroom discussiona are hilarious and very interesting, however, its a lot of work. He requires a journal for all of the stories you have read- and believe me, its ALOT of stories. I hate reading for school and this is a ton of it, but if you dont mind alot of reading then i recommend him, if not then steer clear!!
Interesting guy, I don't think he liked teaching a 110 class to incoming freshman, most the kids still acted like they were in highschool. I did all the assignments, was in class and got an A. He was really into what he was teaching but no one in the class was and never really gave him feedback on stuff...
Literary genius. Extremely helpful. Hysterical sense of humor. Always available after class for extra help. Inspired me to get a PhD in English. Hotty!
Professor Cassvan is Awesome!! He is very knowledgalbe in the areas of English Literature that he teaches and he is totally understanding to the fact that Life exists outside of school!!
He's an overall good teacher, but apparently he didn't like the FYI class. He gives writing assignments for every night and doesn't post them on blackboard sometimes until late the night before. Give in a lot of work get like nothing back. If you're like a wise guy and like to have with teachers take him. He'll love you. And always participate!

He's a really nice guy if you take the time to stay after class and speak to him about any issues you have. His comments are VERY helpful when it comes to the major essays assigned, though he's VERY, very slow with grading, and at least 5 minutes late every day, maybe it's because he spends that time smoking. LOADS of homework every night, or maybe
Jeff is a great professor. He knows a lot about poetry, and is always ready to share his knowledge with his students. He is hilarious also, always getting a rise with his class. The work is difficult at times, but it is definitely worth while! Take him and you won't regret it!!
Honestly he is kind of boring, but no test, final or midterm. Just talk in class. He is cool. He uses a lot of big words, so you will learn a new word everyday. It's really a talking class. You have to do responses for poems, but they are one page long and it's easy. You won't regret taking him. Go ahead and sign up. Not a lot of work.
He literally spoon-feeds you interpretations for the papers. Also, the journal entries are extremely easy. For anyone that complained about lacking class discussions and pregnant silences, just say something -- even if it may be wrong, because he takes your insight into consideration, expands on it, and moves into his own interpretation.
He is very intelligent and knows his stuff. The amount of reading can be overwhelming but participate in class! If you're taking 391 you should be interested anyway...He is awesome and very insightful! A MUST TAKE!!
Terrible teacher and terrible person. He's constantly looking for a fight and will pick apart even the best essay. I dreaded going to this class the entire semester. Avoid if you can.
I do not know what the person who made the comment before me was talking about-- He is very helpful and works with his students. If you are not interested in learning about literature-- CHANGE YOU MAJOR
I like him, i just like him.
This guy WILL embarrass you if he sees you nodding off or not paying attention. he can be a jerk and has an indisputably holier than thou attitude. hes a good lecturer though, and IS intelligent!
This man is brilliant! I am taking 636 with him now and have learned more in the last two classes, than i have in the 2 previous years. he is totally coherent, quasar-bright, and--most importantly--clear! i am so pissed that i just found out about him. i would have taken every single class i could have with him. best professor, hands down--period!
He's so hot!!!!! Yum.
He is brilliant! Definitely take him if English is your thing. He is well versed in all areas of English literature and has the ability to broaden perspectives. My favorite professor at Queens :)
He is very intelligent and makes it easy for the class to take part in all discussions. He is also very down to earth and makes you feel comfortable. Just let him know you're alive and participate so he remembers you. Seems like he'd be fun to grab a drink with. I'm sure the conversations would be quite interesting!
Great teacher. Knows his stuff. I saw him out with his girlfriend recently. She's beautiful! Seemed really intelligent and sweet, too.
Very insightful and provides a great critical analysis. His class is challenging in a great way and he has opened my eyes to scrutinizing literature in a VERY different way. Enjoyable. If you don't like a challenge just go with the push over professor.
Sexy Sexy Hot Intelligent! Such an insightful teacher and is extremely passionate about his work. Makes one be passionate as well!
Seems difficult but he allows you to grow academically and learn from your mistakes
He will make your paper bleed... no but seriously he was a great professor and very insightful. i found him somewhat intimidating only because once you comment on something he asks questions and makes you think. I suppose that's the mark of a good prof. The class was by no means TOO difficult but you gain great insight into the seriously analyz lit
He is a great guy and a great professor. He knows so much about philosophy, history, and languages and brings all of that into his poetry class. Only 2 papers for the class which can be tough to write but he is there if you need him. A bit of a procrastinator and a bit un-organized, but still a great professor. i would definitely recommend him.
Aside from being an extremely cool, down to earth guy, Professor Cassvan is one of the most brilliant and articulate professors I've ever taken. He is always available to help you improve your work and genuinely cares about seeing his students succeed. If you're into taking awesome professors it's a no brainer. Take him.
gave a midterm & final, totally fair. based straight from readings, which he goes over thoroughly in class. hes super witty and has fabulous vocab. gives away answers for exams in class, so listen! overall good prof, simplified material, crystal clear explanations, and just an interesting, intellectual class
He's honestly my favorite professor yet. I loved going to class, am a bit sad that it's over. He explains the material in a very clear way, but makes you think and push yourself to think about things in new ways. There was occasionally responses for poems, but they weren't long. There were only two papers, which he was glad to help you with.
Such a great class. Excellent professor! Highly intelligent and helpful. Wants you to learn and succeed.
GENIUS; AWESOME; GREAT; PHENOM.
Professor Cassvan is super understanding and beyond intelligent. Sometimes its intimidating how knowledgable he is but he gives you a different prespective to different texts. Please pay attention, attendance is mandatory in the beginning but then he barely takes attendance. He isn't strict with deadlines if you speak to him! Funny and super nice!
Super helpful and understanding! Very smart...sometimes it can be intimidating! But great professor overall!
This class was quite enjoyable and not very difficult. It was a class for non-majors, so he basically assumed we were all stupid--which was fine with me, because it made the workload very doable. The tests were very easy if you studied for them. I was a bit bored at times, but basically enjoyed.
Much harder than expected! I AM an Eng person & hated it. Readings are sometimes interesting but his testing style is terrible. He speeds thru info and writes random Latin words on the board. Midterm and final - M.C., fill in, and essays. Essays are easy if u do readings and listen but lots of words to memorize. Got an A. Take it if u need to...
Professor Cassvan is so caring and understanding of his students. The texts can get long, but he goes over them in class, and is really funny and so intelligent. He gave two 5 paged papers and a final. SO EASY and he's super helpful. I am glad I took his class
He's a pretty good professor. I wasn't too interested in the lectures, but the workload wasn't bad at all-- just 2 papers and some blackboard posts.
Professor Cassvan is an excellent teacher. He's a teacher that changes your perspective on literature. He truly loves what he does, is helpful, wants his students to succeed, and has a good sense of humor. He may come off as intimidating some times but he just gets frustrated when ppl don't do the reading. I became a much better write thanks to him
Fantastic! He is so knowledgeable and intelligent. He 100% expects you to do the assigned reading, and I totally understood his frustration when the class failed to read/participate. His feedback on your writing is EXCEPTIONALLY detailed, I couldn't have asked for better feedback! Take him if you truly have a passion for literature.
Prof. Cassvan is a great professor. Show up to class, participate, and do the readings. Two papers and a final - not painful at all. He knows his stuff and was an inspirational professor. Take him!
totally brilliant, funny, a little wacky but totally on top of everything. will give you his respect if you show up, do the work, and try to be thoughtful and engaged
Very lenient grader. However, he is erratic in his moods. He can go from happy and relaxed to furious in a second. If you don't do the reading, he'll have your head. He also can be very cutting and sarcastic if you say something "stupid" or "wrong". Oftentimes, you don't know what to make of him.
He gets legitimately annoyed if the class seems like it isn't trying. Read the works slowly, think about them, then read them again. He seems hard, but he grades easily. You'll learn a lot in class, so enjoy it! Would take again.
Awesome professor. Show up to class. You'll learn everything you need from it. He gets legit annoyed if class says stupid things. THINK don't just say whatever nonsense comes to mind.
I took Jeff Cassvan for Theory and he is a good professor but he grades very tough! Theory is a confusing topic. There are absolutely no exams!! just A LOT of annotation assignments and papers. You HAVE to read! He figures everything out if you read or not. i would recommend. ONLY if you're ready for the massive amount of work.
This is by far the best professor I have had at Queens. Theory is a difficult class, but with professor Cassvan you leave having learned a lot. A lot of comments talk about his toughness, however I feel that the class itself is whats difficult. It is a lot of reading, but he goes at your pace and doesn't move on until everyone gets it. TAKE HIM!!!
Prof. Cassvan has a sardonic wit. He often slips in jokes, some overt and some very subtle, that make class a blast. He forces the class to understand readings on a deeper level rather than pointing to one or two elements then attaching theory to it. You learn to appreciate literature as conscious art. Take him if you're smart.
Only take him if you are actually, truly interested in Celtic lit. On one hand, he is knowledgeable, funny, and leads an open and relaxed class. On the other hand, his lectures are pretty unorganized and hard to follow. The material certainly isn't easy, so having structured lectures would help. However, that's just not his style.
Theory is probably the most difficult English class, so you have the expect to do some sort of work. The lectures can get a little dry, there's lots of reading, he doesn't like when you use your cell phone (or you will get picked on), HOWEVER he really does help you improve your writing and he's a very lenient grader (I can't stress that enough).
Irish Lit is no simple class. Make sure you are very interested in Celtic lit before choosing the class. There are a lot of rough readings, but he explains everything so thoroughly in class. His great sense of humor makes the lectures bearable, and his descriptions are better than the actual stories. He give a lot of opportunity and room to do well
Probably one of the best professors I've ever had. Cassvan is like your fun, witty uncle that comes to your family BBQs once a year. He only has two papers throughout the semester which is pretty scary, but if you read, show up and participate, he'll go easy on you. He'll know if you don't read! He's funny, a great guy and I would HIGHLY recommend.
Probably the wittiest professor I'll ever have in college. He's straight to the point in his lessons and won't be afraid to call you out on something. He seems to play favorites so watch out, but he gives great feedback on papers. You'll have to work for a good grade, but you learn a lot.
The man is a genius, if you show up and do the reading (or at least some of it) you'll be fine. He's happy to answer questions as long as he can sense that you've done your part of the work, and literally gives you all available information to help you succeed. Feedback is awesome. He's intimidating at first, but once you get to know him he's great
Professor Cassvan is of tough character. He does not bs things and will say it like it is. He will not move on until the whole class understands the topic which is something i enjoy because not all profs do this. His grading comments are very harsh but make you improve on your writing. I would for sure take him again.
TOUGH BUT BRILLIANT PROFESSOR. No doubt hes intimidating but he really is a great help if you ask him for help. He expects a lot from the students thats why he gets upset when the expectation isnt met but hes good. get ready for a lottttttttt of reading
Avoid him at all costs!!!
Professor Cassvan is very knowledgeable. He very much cares about the literature and text and respects it dearly. However he is very sarcastic and that I do not tolerate. He cares about his students, but if he did so much he would not be so sarcastic and rude. Finally it it totally up to you to take him. He is a tough grader but he will push you.
Professor Cassvans class was my favorite this past semester. Hes brutally honest, so, really, youll know what to expect from what he tells you. He really wants you to do your best, but this means that he isnt afraid to tell you when youre wrong. Dont be intimidated by it; its not a personal attack. Hes cool (and a genius), so take him.
Loved the class. Amazing!
He is very passionate with the readings and his students, but once he is being taken advantage of, he will definitely call you out on it. But it's not as bad as you think, I really enjoyed it. Take him, he is a very jolly man!
As an Engish major, I deeply regret not appreciating a class that is as enlightening as Cassvans. Although I may not have begun the semester on his good side, I would learn that this was the result of my doing. He will push you to be the best writer and critical thinker that you are capable of being. Poor attempts at participation are called out.
He explains the work very clearly, but he can get frustrated quite easily. Make sure you get on his good side through participation and saying relatable remarks about the readings. Theory is no piece of cake, so buckle up.
I wish I took him more often! Probably the hardest class I've ever taken, but Cassvan really teaches you a lot. There's a lot of reading, and his lectures are kind of confusing sometimes, but when you ask him to go through things he does an amazing job of explaining. I can't recommend him enough - he really makes you a better thinker and writer!
I took Professor Cassvan during covid and he tried his best to be understanding of everyone's situations. He's very caring but you must communicate with him because he truly wants his students to succeed. ENG244 is a really tough class and I don't normally like doing work, but honestly I would take this class again if I could. I learned so much.
OMG WHAT A GREAT PROFESSOR. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN HOW TO WRITE PROFESSIONALLY TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I WILL BE TAKING HIM THROUGH OUT MY ENGLISH MAJOR COURSES! HE THE BEST BEST PROFESSOR IN THE WORLD SO UNDERSTANDING AND CARING. HE IS THE GEM OR GEMS. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. HE OPENED MY EYES AND PUT ME ON THE PATH OF BECOMING A GOOD WRITER.
Cassvan is absolutely brilliant, yet simultaneously relaxed and incredibly understanding. Always makes himself avail outside of class, responds quickly to emails. Lots of reading - to be expected - and weekly discussion posts. Facilitates thoughtful discussions, Genuinely believes in his students and does everything to help us succeed. Take him!
His class discussions are very extensive so be prepared to take notes and annotate. Assignments are very tedious so make sure you follow directions otherwise he will call you out in front of the whole class. Good professor and he assigns a lot of interesting readings and poems, yet some are boring but that's expected.
It baffles me this Professor has such great ratings. His lectures were long and boring. He assigned so many readings. And nothing you will do is good enough for him. Hes an extremely harsh grader. by the end of my class, half the students dropped out, and I even spoke to a classmate who cried because of him.
This guy is very stubborn about cameras being on and participation to the point where he would bother a student for 5 minutes or longer over the littlest thing. He also randomly calls out students.
Cassvan is totally not rude! Don't be intimidated or swayed by bad reviews. He's a dry speaker with a dry sense of humor. But he is always sincere with feedback and class discussion. The lectures help you understand the reading, the literature is iconic, and he's totally open-minded. Best feedback I've ever gotten on my writing. Worth the work.
he's good and very understanding
This professor is absolutely great! Although there were a lot of readings and some were difficult, he took time to review them during his lectures. Not only does he take the time to give you helpful feedback on essays, but he is also a very knowledgeable professor. Overall, take him and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Challenging yet rewarding class. Professor is very knowledgeable and provides helpful feedback. Readings can be tough, but attending lectures makes a big difference. Unstuck ai was a game-changer for prepping.
He is sooo demanding and uptight, I took this as an extra course for "fun" and he made me hate it everyday, he picks on you and is lowkey a bully. He was the worst never again. THIS CLASS IS NOT THAT SERIOUS WHEN YOU ARE INTERPRETING YOUR OWN LANGUAGE.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS THIS MAN IS THE MOST INSENSITVE MOST OBNOXIOUS PERSON EVER, HE REQUIRES EVERYTHING DETAILED TO THE TEA, THIS CLASS IS NO FUN AT ALL cant even express yourself. AVOID at all cost. AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID .
This class was very long and very boring. It was hard to pay attention at times. He is a very strict professor I will say. Sometimes i even had anxiety when I attended his class at times. His readings and writings were hard to understand and always wanted them to specific. If you want more work and a strict professor, you can take his class.
He's rude and demeaning when you don't do what he wants and when you ask questions. If you see a bunch of good reviews of him, that either comes from the man himself or a bunch of ass kissing students. This man doesn't let you write essays like you normally would instead has you do 3 different types of papers with explanations for only one essay.
I agree with the last rating. So many people in his class are kiss a$$. The only reason being is because he likes to humiliate students in front of the whole class. He could be really rude to students. A student asked him for more explanation about an essay and he said to drop the class. He's the professor, he should guide us.
There's a difference between being tough but firm and respectful and being flat out disrespectful. This man is the latter as he degrades you if you were to ask him questions along with you not understanding what he wants. He makes you read and write a lot more than you really need to and, if you ain't getting it, forget it cuz you lost right there.
I am not sure after all the reviews how this professor has a 4 out of 5 literally such a bad professor. Just ridicules you for everything you do and his comments are rude. Makes you believe you are a bad writer but trust me it's not you, I know this is a core class for English majors but if you can AVOIDDD him take this class with someone else,
Professor Cassvan is not a respectful professor and a person. He's a bully who loves to put you on the spot whenever he doesn't get his way from you.
Had to create an account for this. I agree with all of the recent comments, this man is basically a bully. He picks on kids that don't give him EXACTLY what he wants. Makes us read a shi ton, weekly assignments that are 500 words each, it's as if he thinks this is the only class we take. Got another professor said he wouldnt take his class either.
I know it's wrong to wish bad on people. In this professor's case, I hope he gets fired. He's very rude towards his students and he makes fun of you when you don't understand his assignments. I thought his job, as a professor, is to guide students and help them succeed not be a bully towards them just for asking questions about his assignments.
He's never bullied me but definitely has bullied some of my classmates. He's a weirdo. He LOVES talking about $ex, even if the text has nothing to do with it. Its so uncomfy. He's soooo rude, he loves to embarrass his students. Please do not take him because he will genuinely make you feel as if your writing is terrible.
Professor Cassvan is rude to most of his students. If you don't understand the material and have questions, he will never let you live it down and instead belittle you in front of the class. Assigns very long intense readings and tedious assignments. Takes a long time to grade or give you any decent feedback. Overall would not recommend.
Never take any classes with this old grouch. He's very rude and always have some smart remarks to say whenever you ask him questions. He makes assignment way too deep then it needs to be. As in, he goes above and beyond on assignments that shouldn't be too complicated to understand. Take someone else for literary history, guys.
Just take somebody else for literary history and/or any other English classes. This professor is not only something else when it comes to assignments but he's very disrespectful as mentioned in previous comments. This "professor" should be fired as he can't even respect his students and belittles them whenever the opportunity arises.
I took this professor in 2016 or 2017 (don't remember since it's been awhile) and this professor told me to drop the English major. But as you can see by my review. I received an A- in his class soooo. Just don't take him. He will discourage you which is the opposite of what a professor is supposed to do.
In life, we make poor decisions and we could choose to learn from it or not. I made a mistake by enrolling in this grouch's class on Spring 2022. He's so rude along with giving a bunch of writing just for one essay. We got into an argument and told me to drop my major. A professor is supposed to encourage not disrespect students. He's not worth it.
Professor Cassvan was really amazing this semester. He communicated his expectations for the class at the beginning, is reachable outside of office hours, and gives multiple check-ins per semester so you know what to expect when your grade comes around and to change the outcome.
Very involved in following up with students, he's always willing to meet you in the middle if you're actually doing the work, lectures are actually engaging not something you could've gotten off a PowerPoint, gives pretty much 98% of the required readings on brightspace. Best professor this semester
My uncle died during this semester and Professor Cassvan went out of his way to comfort me, responded to my interest with additional material, and is one of the reasons I now like Writing Intensive courses. Lectures are actually informational, didn't have to buy much as far as the readings, and gave a lot of chances for bringing your grade up.
If you don't like English, are lazy and expect an easy grade literally don't take this professor. He's interested in students who are interested and if you're not interested at least do what's asked and you'll be fine. Always makes the material accessible, is not an easy grader but does give good feedback and doesn't deviate from the syllabus
Participation matters, homework matters and also the required reading material is actually required. Lectures aren't boring, he's nice, not complicated at all. Clear grader tells you what to expect and is reachable/willing to talk about redos
Wouldn't surprise me that this professor writes his own reviews. A handful of people dropped out of this class as he does way too much for one assignment along with being very disrespectful.
He's a weird and rude dude. Just take someone else or get ready to write much more than you need to for one essay.
You definitely have to work extremely hard in his class to earn a passing grade. Talking to him and attending his office hours is beneficial. As long as you are keeping up with readings and discussion boards, you should be fine; otherwise, he will call you out on it.
