I thought he was refreshing in comparison to the professors of 211: funny and friendly. He obviously loved the topics but had a tendency to think everyone understood it as well as he did: thus the tests were failed. He was obviously upset by the scores and made an extra effort to improve them (so much that the next test was offensively easy).
His jokes can be a bit inappropriate at times, and he wastes a lot of class time with them. Sometimes it's hard to follow what he's saying in lecture, but if you go to his office hours he's usually really helpful.
Obviously Bio isn't a breeze, but but Chang tries to make it fun. The tests are fairly easy as long as you actually read the material and listen in class. Just be careful not to sit in his microphones dead spot, or he'll blame it on you!

He is hard with his plant and cell biology, but his tests were easier to take and it was easier for me to understand him when he was talking. His tests are actually funny to take because of some of his multiple choice options. You do have to pay attention though, you do have to study VERY HARD, and you do have to read the book.
funny but bad teacher
Jeff Change is a great professors. His material was easy to understand. He doesn't try to make his tests easy at all. in fact some of answer choices for his test is quite funny. He gives you the facts in class. all you have to do is memorize it. You don't have to read anything more out of the book.
He is hard to follow and does not explain things very well.
Good teacher. Hard Material so you have to study outside of class. Most of the questions come from the lectures so you have to make sure you attend every class. Usually he is explains things well, but you may have to read the book for better understanding. Makes funny jokes which makes the class enjoyable. overall good teacher!
Great professor. Hard material, so GO TO OFFICE HOURS. 1st time I went, soon as he knew my name he knew everything about me out of 1400 students! If you put effort in, HE WILL SEE YOU SUCCEED! Again, GREAT PROF!
He's a funny and amusing teacher. The class time is fun, but he does get off topic a lot and sometimes it seems annoying. He says ass a lot and relates some material to newer and more understanding things. Great teacher to have, but he didn't teach the whole term.
He is a good professor for the most part, but does get off topic which gets frustrating. He might have ADD. He can be a little rude too. His teaching style is good and his tests are not difficult, although a few questions should have been thrown out that he kept. He makes it a lot easier than he sounds like he will, and you learn a lot from him.
Easily gets off topic in class, but he is hilarious. Spends more time joking around instead of teaching which requires you to do more learning on your own. Great guy.
He is straight forward, follow his slides and review them before tests and you will be fine. Tests can be hard, but can be quite simple as well. Makes funny remarks, and is obsessed with bagels and the 49ers. Overall a good instructor, but can be challenging.
Really great professor , easy midterms
He is very funny, especially considering the information he's teaching is a bit dry. His lectures give you the basic outline of what you need to know, but I suggest opening your book (sorry, I know it's painful) and reading the chapters. His multiple choice questions almost always contain one or two obviously wrong answers. I liked him though!
You must take advantage of his first two tests in order to tank the final for an A. Chang's exams are very straightforward and usually have 2-3 obviously wrong answers per question. Best BI 2xx instructor, and an interesting man. Got an A but had to work for it.
Jeff is very entertaining and made class fun. He does get off topic easily though. Tests are pretty easy, but some questions can be tricky. Overall a good professor and I would recommend him.
Chang tries to be funny in his lectures, but it's a waste of time. He gets off topic half the time and has long periods of silence for no reason. He's a terrible professor even though he's an expert in his field. I would not recommend taking a class from him if you can help it.
He changed his teaching technique and "expectations" but not for the best. This was not a hard subject for me but I've done exceptionally well in physics, gen chem, and Ochem prior to taking this class. I found his lectures of very little use, he was never on schedule and spent 90% of class playing 20 questions. His tests were very poorly written.
His lectures consist of him asking questions, flying through important concepts, terrible writing, and funny jokes. I like the guy, although in my opinion, he isn't a good professor. I wasted much of my time attending lecture, I should have just read the book, or attended study tables.
so hard
It's hilarious reading all the positive comments on here. I would hope the the university would recognize such a poor quality professor.
He's absolutely terrible. Expects way too much from students for an intro level course. Does this very annoying thing where he asks the class to answer him and if you don't he'll stand and stare at the whole 500 person lecture and wait, wasting valuable class time. And then complains about not getting as far as he wanted to in his lecture.
Very unclear with notes, awful handwriting and can not follow. His tests were hard. If I wanted to learn anything it was up to me to teach myself.
His exams are very poorly written. His lectures are not helpful at all. He breezes through important topics and expects you to be well-rehearsed about the material before coming to class. His hand-writing is also nearly illegible, and his lectures are sometimes difficult to follow. If you want to teach yourself biology, take Dr. Chang.
Chang has a great sense of humor which is rather unfortunate for the some 800 students in class because valuable time gets lost on jokes. Tests are insanely hard unless you like to read the dreadfully boring book cover to cover and absorb all the seemingly insignificant details of information... If you like your A's and B's... Good luck.
His lectures are confusing and his handwriting is awful. Purposely made tests extremely hard this term; BOTH midterm averages were 66%. His 'tip' for studying: "If you can relay the ideas clearly to someone else, you know the material."That's it. No past midterms or need-to-know sheets provided. Get ready to go into tests BLIND.
Basically what everyone has said below is true. Wish I had skipped all of his lectures and just read the book. Plus he makes offensive jokes on the regular. Honestly just an unpleasant person in general and should just do research. Avoid Chang at all costs!
He's rude, goes off on tangents in class, mocks students, and gives really hard tests. The tests focus on extremely specific details of stuff he sometimes didn't even teach you. Absolutely awful teacher, avoid at all costs.
hard tests
This class is not interesting at all for me with Jeff Chang. He is rude with students and doesn't help a lot. I had to teach myself almost everything and read the book and still didn't get B or A on tests because he focused on very specific details. What everyone said is true don't attend his lectures and read the book.
I would never take a class from Jeff again. He seems like a great guy to hang out with, but a terrible guy to learn from. He loves using his tablet, but it never works so he ends up not actually writing down anything on his lectures, so you really have to listen to what he says. Don't assume you can just go to class and be fine with this one.
He shouldn't be your first choice. He relied more on the fact that you will read the book and will speed through the lecture. Spends way too much time trying to be funny.
I'm not sure what everyone is talking about here. I never read from the book and did fairly well on the tests. All I did was study the lecture notes from class and was able to get high Bs on both tests (well enough to get an A in the class overall). A few trick questions, but nothing unreasonable. Pretty funny as well.
Honestly, Dr. Chang isn't that bad of a teacher. Landys is what saved the term. I got a high B on his midterm exam and pulled out with an A in the class. He gives tons of resources to help you such as his google docs questions. If you put int he work you will be successful!! Take advantage of your lab TA and SI tables!!
Very, very rude professor. Comes off as if he is above you and will make several snide 'jokes'. He can explain concepts fairly well, but limit your interaction with him one-on-one, he doesn't seem that kind.
Terrible, terrible professor. He's so rude to students and acts like he's above everyone. It's a shame you have to take BI 212 from him, he's not nice.
Honestly Jeff is really annoying in class and makes me want to not pay attention and who ever put that he's hot is gross.....
He's legitimately the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. He doesn't teach anything and expects you to learn everything on your own, and is extremely condescending when the students don't understand the topics. His tests are unreasonably hard, as though he's trying to get you to fail. Avoid him like the plague.
He can't teach and does not have the students best interest in mind. He is extremely rude and vague regarding what he expects you to know for exams, making them impossible to prepare for, let alone pass. When students ask questions, he tells them to reread the text. He sets you up for failure. For a person who loves biology, I dread his class.
Maybe I'm one of the odd ones out here, but I did pretty well in this class. Lots of reading though so be prepared for that. Often times his lectures were confusing but if you paid attention and did the reading, it wasn't as bad. Test questions were difficult but obviously that's expected--just study. You have to put in work to get the grade.
The topics in this class are CRUCIAL to understand for upper division Bio courses. Dr. Chang makes the class challenging because he knows how important these topics are. Read the book and go to his office hours; he is incredibly helpful in person! Don't just complain about not getting a good grade but refuse to put in the work!!!
Terrible professor; one of the worst I've had at OSU. He is rude to students and his lectures are pointless besides the mandatory clicker points. He does not teach anything in class and has you do activity worksheets that feels like something from middle school.
Gives out worksheets instead of full lectures. All learning material beyond the book that is connected to course learning is short videos you are supposed to watch before lecture. These provide only a small incite into what the exams will hold. If you can get into one of the study group slot times, DO IT!
Lots of worksheets and group activities which end up being a waste of time and ultimately not helpful. Has a weird fetish for calling people out about using their cell phones. He puts on a really obnoxiously fake tough-guy personality for his students. He's probably a nice guy outside of the classroom, but unfortunately you're stuck with him.
I'm not sure what everyone is so upset about. Is this class challenging? Yes. But, it should be. I never read the book... just watch and take notes on the pre-lecture videos then come to class ready to do an activity. If you are stuck on a topic, you can get help in class. Most people complained more about the activities than actually tried them.
Dr. Chang is the lecturer for the first portion of the BI212 course, as his focus of study is Botany, he taught everything in the course on plants. Although I audibly heard complaints from other students, I found his lectures informative, and he is willing to make office hour appointments with you to help you learn the concepts. He's really nice!
Dr Chang makes this class more difficult than it should or needs to be. His exam questions are written in such a way that one really should have a notecard. He also has a tendency to talk down to the class. Hope for the best but study for the obscure; his exams don't test on material so much as on critical thinking. Nice guy, mediocre teacher.
I thought he was mostly fine. He tends to make concepts more difficult than they need to be, and can be condescending. Group work during lecture was a waste of time. Tests were challenging and involved a lot of critical thinking, which I think upset a lot of people who were used to regurgitating facts. Follow the study guides and you'll be golden.
Chang literally does not care about the learning of the students whatsoever. He frequently dismisses questions asked in lecture because he doesn't feel like explaining them and skips over material that will be on the exam. His lack of care for the class is very clear and he also lacks the ability to explain concepts in understandable ways.
Did not explain things well, his tests were worded very weirdly and that was the main difficulty. He tested on things that weren't covered in lecture and expects you to read the book front and back.
Lectures are most confusing in the series, and so are the in-class clicker questions. Tests are very hard. Expect to study a lot and be very attentive during lectures.
Lectures were super confusing, the exams still had the clear grading criteria that the other classes in the BI 21X series had but the lectures were so hard to follow I never felt confident going into the material covered by Chang. We were the first class they had to curve test scores for because we had the lowest scores in the history of the class!
Overall, he is fine. He has a very strange way of wording things, which is my biggest issues. You have to decipher the way he arranges his sentences and words he chooses. His lectures are good, but he acts like the worksheets are top secret and won't help work through tough problems for learning purposes- which is strange. Hard exams
While I do agree that D. Chang can sometimes use confusing vocabulary or call students out, he really appreciates when students engage and will happily answer questions. Make sure to be attentive, he can talk fast and very concisely. I would take his class again.
Jeff does not listen to feedback well and can be rude, his tests are hard too.
He's very condescending when students ask questions. Exam questions are too difficult too. Horrible at explaining topics, draws terrible diagrams to "explain" and expects us to understand the material fully when he wouldn't even give us proper notes. He literally only DRAWS things to teach, NO lecture notes or words written/presented at all.
I love Jeff, I think the people who say hes rude are misinterpreting his response to questions. He can be a little sarcastic but its clear hes joking and trying to make lectures fun. He is very thorough at explaining things and more than willing to go back and answer any question. By far my favorite biology prof at OSU.
I don't know why people are saying Dr. Chang is a bad teacher. He tries hard to keep the class engaged during difficult topics, answers questions well, and even though the tests can be hard, there is tons of extra credit to make up for it. I only do the pre-class lectures and occasionally the study guides, but his lectures are usully helpful enough
I had Professor Chang in person for BI 222 and I definitely prefer him over Lori(ew). His written notes are a little confusing to follow sometimes during lecture but he is so open to kids asking questions and is willing to take the time to answer them during lectures. Lots of kids were comfortable asking him questions during lecture. Very witty.
Im not sure why Jeff has a bad rep, he is genuinely so caring and interactive with his students. He always makes sure to answer all questions during lecture and makes that 50 minute class very enjoyable and quick with his jokes and sarcasm. He is definitely the BEST one out of all the gen bio profs that Ive experienced. No doubt
Great professor and very funny
Dr. Chang has absolutely been my favorite gen bio professor. His lectures were very entertaining and he makes it easy for students to ask questions throughout the whole lecture. While the content is difficult, but he made it easier to understand because we could address the things that he maybe didn't explain so well the first time around.
Professor Change was such a good instructor. Rather than getting a goal completed, he actually wanted us to understand the content, compared to other instructors in the series. One thing he didn't do well was responding to questions about specific details in the content.
Chang is an amazing lecturer. Teaching biology concepts is difficult but he manages to break down the mechanisms simply. He answers questions very nicely and considerately. His lectures are hilarious as well. The class is very exam heavy, so study for the midterm and you will do well in BI222
I could never follow along in lecture. I felt incompetent during this class. The exams were super hard. I never passed one of Jeffs exams. He was not understanding with the class.
I wish jeff taught all 10 weeks of bio222 although he isn’t the best with technology and his lectures get a bit confusing at times, he was a good prof. He is the best bio series teacher I’ve had so far and his in class notes he took along with the optional content videos really helped me understand the tough topics.
He's hilarious and he's good at explaining or elaborating on topics that people in class struggle with.
Best prof I've had so far! Very engaging
My favorite Prof thus far in the BI series classes. Good at explaining topics on multiple levels for students with varying degrees of prior knowledge. Will draw rough sketches to help depict the topics better and for those who are keeping written notes. Has a sense of humor that helps to keep students engaged and listening to the material.
His lectures are extremely hard to follow and he puts very limited information on his powerpoints. He mostly annotates his lectures which involves drawing diagrams and writing notes but it's hard to reference and learn from. The pre-lecture videos posted on Canvas are helpful and so are the textbook. Get ready to study a lot!
He is a lot better than Lori, like A LOT better. He honestly is really good at going over concepts so far and makes good analogies that go with the concepts being learned. He also goes at a pace that is easy to follow and is willing to take time to answer student questions and go back over content that was confusing.
He is the best Bio prof at OSU as of 2024. He really tries to make sure everyone understands. Bio is one of the hardest subjects because it is ALL memorization. You can not just go to lecture and score well on exams, you really have to study.
Overall, good professor who cares and can add humor to lecture. This is a flipped lecture where you read or watch videos and do work in class. Typically I dislike flipped lecture courses but I liked this one. I recommend him
This is an introductory class, but almost everyone is a grad student working in a lab, so undergrads will feel very lost. You work in groups for the entire term, and many classes are literature review group presentations. Attendance is recorded but participation makes up your grade. Extremely kind grader, but I wish there was less group work.
I want to like Jeff Chang but his style of teaching is abysmal. Do not take his class unless you want to learn everything by yourself. All he does is draws picture and makes jokes. I do not care about your stupid jokes Jeff I am here to learn and I cannot learn if you don't post lectures or go over worksheets or literally help students at all.
I love Jeff. This class is almost entirely participation-based. Homework was mostly asking you about what you know on a subject. We read a lot of papers and discussed them. The content and papers can be confusing as an undergrad, if you aren't used to reading them. As long as you attend class and talk to participate, you will get an A.
Ok, Dr. Chang is kind, patient and goofy BUT I learned NOTHING from his style of teaching. As an auditory learner, i was disappointed in Dr.Changs portion of the term. If not for my previous botany classes- I would have been so lost.
He's a great and funny guy, but his style of lecturing isn't for everyone. The slides used have little information, so I had issues whenever I missed what he said where I wouldn't have a clue what was happening with all the abbreviations/acronyms written down. That aside, Jeff does cares for his students and I still found this section enjoyable!
Jeff is hilarious in lecture but his slides have 1 or 2 words on them, and Jeff might add a couple more words with no context during lecture. His handwriting is abysmal and the diagrams he draws are near inpossible to decipher. Get ready to read the entire textbook if you want to understand the concepts because these lectures were useless
I really wanted to like Jeff as he seems like a great guy, he does genuinely care about his students and tries to answer all questions. The exams are a guessing game. The content of the tests did not match the textbook quizzes or lectures so I sat there stuck. Do all the extra credit and you'll get an A.
I really liked Dr. Chang as a person but as a prof he's one of the more difficult I've had. He is really funny, super approachable, and clearly cares about the material he is teaching. His slides contain next to nothing beyond pictures and videos. I felt pretty lost on the material; study groups and the textbook will be your saving grace.
Dr. Chang is a funny and engaging lecturer. However, the slides he uses in lectures have close to nothing written on them besides photos and videos that make no sense outside of class. His handwriting and diagrams are something to be deciphered. I have never learned less in a class. I recommend completing all extra credit in this course.
