easy to get an A if you go to class everyday... takes attendance, hwk is turned in every Monday, quiz every Friday... not very helpful in lecture...
Very hard class. He doesn't go through many examples.
Very hard class with bad teacher. Cannot even do the problems correctly himself.
I found Chen to be an excellent teacher. He can be a lot of fun and also cares very deeply to whether his students are understanding the material. Tests may be difficult as they will uncover any holes in your understanding, very helpful.
class is easy. quizzes and tests are hard so study a lot. he doesnt seem to find a way to help u out when your down in the ditch with half the class.
Granted his tests and quizzes are kind of tough, but he will listen to suggestions that students have and frequently changes his syllabus to help out the students.
very organized, hard class
His class was a challenge, but he tries to be very helpful. For calc he did everything with power point presentations which was actually very nice.
I remember being very amused in this class. Has odd sense of humor. But I also remember him helping me with my homework if I got a bad score, so that really helped a lot. But this was 5 years ago too.
not good at all
Class is fairly easy, but his tests are hard. To do really good in this class regular attendance is necessary He gives a fair amount of extra credit. He is sometimes unclear, I would take him again
tough class, he doesnt give you much time on the tests
This class is an absolute joke. I had 145 students in my class, and 3/4 aren't going to pass. REDICULOUS COURSE. This guy is hard to understand and extremely fast. NOT good. But I heard he's better than the rest of the math profs. Says alot about mathhere
Knows alot about math, but he doesn't know how to teach it to others. He doesn't curve tests, and only 15 out of 136 students in my class pass each test.
The worst teacher that i ever had. Terrible Do NOT take this teacher
he'll make you do homework problems that look like this: 2+2=4 now for the test: 2+3+(4-342)^2*3+45^4=? Its that much harder.
Gives you plenty of opportunities to earn points. Definitely knows his stuff, you will learn from him.
he is the hardest teacher i have ever had...the home work is elementary but the tests are masters level...he makes everything harder then it is... gives you only 20 minutes for a hour test...oh! he also gives "extra credits" that are only .1 of
Horrible teacher, can't speak write or even understand the English language he needs to find a new job
There were only 8 students out of 140 that passed our final exam with a C- or better. This guy shouldn't be teaching. He deserves to be deported!!! Around 10% of the class maybe pass each test, but there hasen't been more then that which have passed.
very knowledgeable about subject, gives good examples, and does a fine job explaining.
Took the class was passing until the final. After taking the final that nearly everyone failed only 40% of the class was passing the class with a 70% or a low C. I mailed him asking about the grades and he just told us that we should have got a dif.teach
Avoid at all costs. This guy is the worst teacher that I have ever had at SCSU. He thinks that the students should know everything that he does, then gets upset when we dont. This guy needs to learn how to speak and write in English. Take agre for 196
Chen was a very helpful with students, his test were hard but if you come prepared you will do fine. It is basically Advance Algebra all over again.
he was leniant at the end, but the beginning was stressful and his teaching style wasn't very effective
The main question on everyone's mind was how he obtained a teacher's license with a failure in the English language? Teaches a unit or two in one day and quizzes the next.
He is the worst teacher in the whole world. I hate this guy! Him and his "extra credits" and always saying "that is to say." He sucks totally. I asked a question one time and got yelled at. After he tells us to ask questions. Don't ever take this guy. He will ruin your life forever!
This guy has no clue how to teach. He is in the wrong profession,oh yeah,I though you had to know how to speak english to get a teaching job.how messed up is that.the math program here ia a JOKE,every prof. is awful at what they do.but back to chen, he SUCKS!
I can't believe they can let him teach! He can't speak english his tests are very hard. if you still do decide to take him study up for some math before your first day there is a test then and it is bonus points added to your final. But they still don't help! Don't take him if you don't have to!
seemed easy at first, but got harder. tests are really hard- everybody fails them. 40 point quizzes every week on stuff you just learned the last class. lets you correct homework for full credit but its worth barely any of your grade so it doesnt even matter. takes attendence everyday.
Seems like a very legite prof. at first, BEWARE! Tests are incredibly hard as well as quizzes. Awesome opportunity to correct your homework for full credit, but it's worth jack. WORST PROF. EVER HAD AT SCSU!
This class is tough. Chen isn't a bad prof. but don't go into it thinkin it's gonna be a cake walk either. You have to study a lot for tests. Homework should be an easy 15% of your grade because he lets you make corrections. Attendance is 3% of grade. Chen is very helpful if you go to his office hrs
By far that worst professor ever. They need to send him back to English class. It seems he does not enjoy helping students. Also, at times it seems like he has split personalities by the way he dresses..Rediculous..Do not ever take this so called "Math Professor"
Chen is by far the worst teacher ive had EVER! He cant speak english and his lectures are boring and impossible to understand. The second test kills everyone and about 50% of the class doesnt get the required C- or better. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!
This professor makes subjects much harder than they really have to be. His notes are useless, and the quizes and tests are very hard. There are no second chances, and his lectures are boring. Not recomended.
I see so many of you saying he is a bad teacher. He isn't bad the material is just hard. All teachers that teach this class get bad ratings. Look at **** and see what grades people have been getting in his other classes B's & above. It's not Chens doing, its the material so come prepared
This is a really hard class. It isn't really him that is bad. I thought he explained things well, the only thing I did not like about him is that he doesn't always give partial credit for problems on tests
Yep, it depends upon a teacher. How 5^2=25? Should I say 5+5+5+5+5=25 or 5X5 = 25?
the class just sucks over all. Take someone else if you can, he has a lot of brain farts.
Hardest teacher ever!! Avoid this class at all costs!!!
Go ahead its only like $150+ per credit
its not chens fault the class material is hard, BUT HE IS SOPOSED TO TEACH IT TO US!
This class is extremely hard. He is clear on the teaching, but it is just hard. Study for your tests!!!!! hard core... do your homework everyweek! and don't miss quizes on Thursdays. He's an unfair grader but you just have to deal with it.
Hard material, even harder professor. Difficult to understand and follow teaching methods. (Math cannot be lecture form.) Quizes each week and homework due each week. Never miss class bc attendance is taken. He teaches the class like it is a chore & treats students like they don't know anything
Must attend every day. Hard to understand, and even harder tests. At least I got a D when I should have failed, but over half of the class should've failed. The rest got C's or lower. Teacher or students?
he is difficult to understand, but gives detailed notes for every section that is taught. You can correct your homework for 100% every week. my advice though, the material is very very hard so study a lot for your tests and you should be fine.
If you take his class, you will fail for sure because it is very difficult to earn a C-, then you will waste your money and time to retake MATH 196 again.
A TOUGH INSTRUCTOR. MOST OF THE STUDENTS WHO USED TO TAKE HIS CLASS FAILED. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR NAME ON HIS FAILING STUDENTS LIST.
Take his class and receive a D grade to your GPA. You should try with another instructor before it is too late to drop the class.
I was absolutely wrong to take his class. If you want to do the same mistake like I did, go ahead and then you should be ready to retake Math 196 next semester.
Before I took his class, I was told that he is so mean to students, but I did not believe people's gossip. Then, I fail in his class and I felt so regret for that. Don't hurt yourself like I did. Try MATH 196 with another instructor instead of him.
I felt so sorry to take his class. Please do not get the same mistake as I did.
If you would like to earn a D letter grade to your G.P.A., take his class or else try it with another instructor. I did this mistake therefore my advice to you is please do not take his class. However you can his class with your own risk and then share the sorrow with me.
Students from SCSU told me that he is too bad to students, but I did not listen to them, then I was sufferred by him while taking his class. This is a real story. You will have a painful experience if you still want to take his class.
I can not say how bad he is, take his class and you will learn it in the first day of class.
All thing that I can say about him is that he is an awful nuisance. Taking his class, you will have a chance to taste this feeling.
It's so hard to follow his train of thought, especially since he insists on jumping around so much when he's "explaining" formulas and the like. I don't like it because he doesn't seem willing to answer questions right away; he wants to post the answers on-line; On-line does nothing! I hate that he says, "It's simple." Maybe to a math prof./Doctor.
Hard to understand what he is trying to explain because he jumps all over the place with lecture. Says "this is actually simple" when it isn't. He does let you make up homework to 100% and quizzes online are retakable. Easy class but get a more enjoyable prof.
Very hard class. Was a lot of work. He's not hard to understand though. Tends to ask questions and answer them himself.
Hes really hard to understand, hes really scattered when he explains stuff. he spends forever on the easy stuff and then rushes the harder stuff. i learn more from the book than from him. incrediably boring. very harsh grader. but you get to make up the homework and the online quizzes are retakeable... the in-class quizzes and tests are bad.
I thought he was a good teacher, he explains everything in class well, all the notes are printable from off line before class. Sometimes is hard to stay awake. Many quizzes are online so you can use all your notes. Three tests plus one final. I would take him again for other math classes
Dr. Chen is a pretty good professor. He allows you to get points back on your homework and is willing to help outside class. The material though can be very hard; you have to study a lot for this course.
I think he gets a bad rep. It is a hard class but he gives you the opportunity to correct you HW and online quizes aren't too bad. If you work hard you will pass and he tries hard to help as much as he can.
Sooo boring. Hard to understand. Overcomplicates everything. Barely speaks English.
He is a nice guy and very smart but he has no idea how to teach college students. He's very hard to follow and to understand. Do not take this class if he is teaching it. He overcomplicates everything and does everything the hard way. Ah!!!
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!! DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM!!!!!!!!!! SOOOOOOO HARD!!!!!!!
Tests are extremely hard. You have to do a totally unnecessary project. If you have an unexcused absence, you lose points. If your absense is excused, you still lose points! He doesn't understand that college students get overworked, sick, or busy. The only highlight is that he allows some extra credit work if you do horribley on the tests.
Before people start to criticize him for teaching style, haven't we already learned this in High School. Math 196 with him it is Algebra II all over again. Math 193, deals with stats, which is not difficult to understand if you go to his office and ask for help. It's pathetic that students think the grade should fall in their laps without effort.
everyone gives him a bad rep, but it got full credit on homework since he lets you correct it, the online quizzes are an easy A. I had two other professors before him(bauhaddin, nariane, and he is by far the easiest. I recommend him for this course.
Explains things in most confusing way. Review tests, quizzes & homework are nothing like tests(which are extremely difficult). Admits trying to trick everyone on tests. Teaches most commonly found examples and then puts the most difficult and rare ones on the testwhich he doesn't teach). Very unnaproachable. DOES let you correct homework for pts.
I tested into calculus on the placement exam, but somehow failed math 193. I went to class and did the work, but the way he taught this class was horrible. You can barely understand or hear him, and when asked a question, he doesn't directly give an answer. Very unhelpful. Avoid this teacher!
He wants to see his students succeed, but they have to do the work. He lets you earn easy points through online quizzes, that you can take until you get 100% and homework that you can correct errors to get 100%. With the tests eaither you know it or you don't. He does his part. I would recommend him.
OK.Prof Chen isn't a very clear teacher when he teaches the material. If ur just good at understanding math, then you'll probably get by alright, but if math doesn't come easy for you, then Chen isn't a very good teacher to take.He wont go into detail or elaborate and review enough for you to comprehend problems if you struggle with math in general.
I got 100% on both the online quizzes and the homework, I also got 80% on the project, yet i failed all of his tests, which means I am failing his class! He doesnt teach us what is on the test, I think its because the department makes if up and he has no clue whats on it. I dont recommend him.
This is the worst professor I ever had.
not a good teacher...do not take him!! there is a big language barrier!! (Like all the other prof's at SCSU!!) he is a very nice guy but not good at teaching math!!!
The material isn't half bad, but when someone can't exactly explain it in a way that's understandable, we have a problem. If you have Chen, I would advise to go to his office and have him explain anything you're not getting right on the practice tests. And READ THE BOOK! Yes.. reading in a math class. He expects you to learn a lot on your own.
Very confusing. Made a lot of errors while teaching, and seemed to contradict himself a lot.
he gets really mad when you sleep...even if you have an A in the class...it's stupid. also, his attendance policy is SUPER strict.
This is by far the worst proffesor I have ever had. He is really strict about going to class.. but it's pointless when he doesn't teach you anything. You HAVE to read the book and basically learn everything on your own. This isn't that hard of a class but he makes it hard. He's a really tough grader.
Really nice guy and cares for his students, but makes math more complicated than needed. Its 193 come on and I have a low grade. The plus side is that you get to retake online quizes, and make homework corrects. If you really have to take this course with him,(Tip) look at the midterms and homework problems, they'll be on the tests!!
Don't take him unless you're very good in math bcuz he teaches as though you already know it. He's nice & willing to help in office hrs, but it was extremely hard & boring, he only goes over everything once so you have to teach it to yourself basically, attendance required, he's inappropriate at times. I felt I tried very hard and got a "C"
I switched out of his class. He made many errors while teaching, and if I didn't know what he was talking about already I would not know what he was talking about at all. He seems like a nice person, but I did not feel like I could do my best in his class. Oh, and don't you dare fall asleep. You will be "poked awake".
He was the worst teacher had no help for me and didn't ever explain how to do anything he gave 20 points per problem. he has no teaching skills what so ever! Do No Take!
I am on attempt two with CHEN. I thought things might change after so many of my classmates failed/withdrew, however, he is the same, worthless, tiny man who sips on his green tea water when its not even real green tea. All you hear is "I will give you extra cweedit for that" dont take him...plz..im not gonna next time i have to retake!
He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had, very unclear, makes things extremely worse, half the class left after the quiz he gave. He taught us how to do one question but expected us to gather the principle from that to do something we have never seen or ever done before, and when we asked him to teach us how to do it, said go see a tutor. BS
GAH! kill me now!
Gosh he is awful!!!! He is the worst teacher ever!!!
DO NOT TAKE MATH 193 WITH THIS MAN!
Unclear from the first day. I didn't understand the basis of the class. I had to withdraw because even after trying, I only had a 35% in his class. The material is hard but understanding his way of teaching it is harder.
I advise every person to never ever ever take a course from this professor. you will fail. every person i know that has taken his course either dropped out or failed. horrible! NEVER take him
I did get an A in the class, but only because it was review for me. He requires attendance every day, and if you miss you drop .5% of your grade. He gets really angry when you sleep in class. He grades every little bit of your homework, but you can re-do the assignment within a week and get full credit. Mostly he was just annoying.
I tried taking this class with him, and had to drop. He is terrible! Can't understand him, refuses to answer questions, and tests and quizzes are super hard. Avoid him at all costs!
HE IS HORRIBLE!!!! everyone failed, even going to the tutor doesnt help..the final is a two part 50 pages!!!!There is NO hope, he is horrible and he ruined my GPA! AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!
If you are a Math or Engineering major ignore all these terrible ratings, most are from low level math classes, probably students that should be avoiding Math at all costs. Chen is an EXCELLENT professor. He gives a very low homework load, tests fundamentals rather than long hard problems, and he has a good sense of humor. Best teacher I've had.
These other ratings don't make sense to me, he must have changed cause he is the best math teacher i have ever had. He only collects a couple problems a week, his tests are pretty easy, and he has ways to get points besides just exams. Take this professor if you can.
I also don't understand where the low ratings are comin from, must have been a different Jeff Chen! He is incredibly helpful and understanding, he has taken time out of his personal life to help me with problems i had... overall it was the best learning experience and atmosphere i could hope for in a math class, take his classes if you can!
Let me make this clear to everyone. He gets good ratings for Math 222 because that is his area of expertise, and he probably teaches it well. Any other courses he teaches he is awful. He is horrible at explaining the material in a way that can be understood, and he is a complete prick when it comes to grading (Exam 1 average=57,no curve whatsoever)
Any good comments in regard to him, had to have been written by him. I received a B, but he is of no help, tests are unnecessarily tough, class averages of around 58 percent, and completely humorless. He is part of the reason SCSU Math Dept. has a horrible reputation. Awful. Take all your math requirements at another school and transfer them in.
he is a very good professor. he explains everything in class and he even takes time outta his person life to help out. he is extremly helpful, i don know abt the other courses he teaches but for 222 he is the best in the department.
he is a verrrry hard teacher. his tests are tough, the final was EXTREMELY tough. no curves and he doesn't make exceptions if the whole class does bad.
By far the best calculus professor at SCSU. He grades homework, and quizzes once a week. IT keeps you studying- even if you don't want to. The course is still pretty difficult. He also keeps your grade updated on D2L- very helpful in knowing how hard you should be studying.
Try to avoid taking a class with him. His tests are brutal. Very few people passed with an A. He does allow you to do corrections on homework and group work. If you are looking for an A take it with a different professor.
I don't understand why people do not like him. He tells you exactly what is on the tests. He puts in so much effort for every single student to succeed. Always wants students to ask questions and he never lets you leave confused. He has weekly quizzes but very easy grade boosters. His notes are on powerpoint so you can print them. I recommend him.
Hw was graded fairly, had the chance 2 do hw make up 2 get 100% in that part, quizzes were the worst part of most people's grades with 1 MC,1 TF & 1 computation 40pts/quiz. Tests were okay gives extra time to take them & tells you 5/6 of the type of computation problems similar for final. I'm looking to get a C or B- overall ok but hated the quizes
Not a bad class. Attendance is mandatory and worth a part of the grade. So many EC opportunities. Online assignments weren't bad and very easy. The examsfinal weren't bad either. The quizzes, however, were hard but not too bad. Dr. Chen is a nice professor. He is hard to understand due to pace but not hard to get used to. I'd recommend this class!
pros - clear grades and stats on d2l. lots of EC opportunities. plenty of exercises to keep up with lessons and also weekly tests. cons - doesn't teach or go into detail with everything in class and still puts them on tests and exams. difficult to understand due to his rushed pace during classes and unclear accent. copying notes is tough.
This is calculus so no matter who teaches it's a difficult course. Very clear on assignments, lenient grader. D2L-posted lectures, exam keys, and what will be on tests and quizzes. Posted all scores and calculated grades. Gives participation EC and even gave EC after everyone bombed the first test. Tests/quizzes are difficult but straightforward
One of the hardest professors in the math department. I'm willing to admit that my grade is my fault. I should have studied more effectively. He is willing to help, but doesn't explain well and it feels rushed. If you can teach yourself and learn from online homework you will do well in this class.
Chen's a good teacher. He tries his best but his teaching methods are not helpful. His tests are tough. His lectures aren't as helpful for the tests. The homeworks help you cover for the final grade but the tests are far most difficult.
Overall good experience. I just suck at Calculus. I think the class had the right about of homework. I wasn't a fan of quizzes almost every Friday. The class is HEAVILY based on 3 exams and a final. You NEED to study the material outside of class if you want to pass. Sometimes it's hard to comprehend the material. But it varies between people.
Huge class so easy to blow off but then you will have trouble. Don't miss class if you want to do well.
Not bad but the class was way to big.
Its a hard class but he makes things pretty clear so you should do OK.
He goes through the example problems very quickly. He explains each step as he does it, but it is very very quick. If you don't know what you're doing, you will be lost. He gives lots of feedback on tests and quizzes so that you can improve later. He is pretty lenient if you follow the procedures and his instructions.
O.K. but a little hard.
Discrete Math is a tough subject, but Dr. Chen makes it understandable. Study for weekly quizzes as similar questions are on tests. Find a good group to do weekly homework packet with. If you are CSCI or SE major, he will prepare you for future classes well (ex. Computer Architecture).
Respectful enough, but very tough grader. It was hard to understand his material. On quizzes and assignments, he took lots of points away for improperly notated answers, even if they were mostly correct and showed that you understood the concept.
Dr Chen isnt great at explaining things in class and at his office. He is very picky about how your answers are written, if they arnt exact, you may lose a lot of points even though the answer is correct. He does drop your couple lowest quiz grades however, which does help, as well as letting you know what is gonna be on the exams.
Dr. Chen seems to be kind and passionate about math, but his communication skills are poor. His lectures were very confusing, which forced students to learn MATH321 via the textbook and YouTube rather than from him. The homework seldom prepared us for exams, and he would routinely rush through material to abide by his lesson plan at our expense.
Doesn't teach you, expects you to learn new information from doing the homework
Attendance sheet signed every class time. Group homework for all assignments. Homework corrections available (highly suggest, talk w/ prof about homework and where you went wrong). Exams can have 1 two-sided written formula sheet (anything you want on it). Exams (no corrections) 10% similar to quizzes and HW. Weekly quizzes (rough, no corrections)
Dr. Chen gets a lot of heat for being a strict professor but sets up Math321 to be extremely passable as long as adequate effort is put in. It will most likely be the hardest math class you take. Show up to office hours for corrections. Display effort and care, Dr. Chen seems to reciprocate it as long as he knows you are giving it your all.
Top 3 worst professors I have ever had. His lectures are horrible, assumes you know everything. and can't answer questions you may. Any questions you may have, are answered horribly. Makes you seem like an inconvenience when you come talk to him during office hours. Questions your intelligence. Is very unprepared for class.
I really liked Dr. Chen. Don't let bad reviews fool you, he's a strict grader and expects you to know what you're studying, so make sure you're actually doing your work. Very easy to talk to and get help from. Would take math from again.
Dr. Chen is a tough grader but offers helpful support. Using unstuck AI and working with a study group can make this challenging course manageable.
Do not let my grade fool you, this class is TOUGH. It is a flipped class so you take notes before class, then there are online and paper assignments every week, with a quiz on that material the week after, while you are talking about a different topic. He does want you to pass though. He offers a lot of extra credit for talking and curves grades
I took this class in my first freshman semester, accelerated. He pushes you. Hard. But he works hard himself (grading on Sundays, responding to emails quicker than most, recording a TON of lectures, etc.). Expect to spend full days each week on the homework. Exams have a narrow time limit, so study! Leaves thorough notes and lets you redo homework.
Find any other alternative than to take this professor.
