What Students Say
“Horrible uncomfortable class”
MATH130 - 1.0 rating“if you're looking for a class to simply learn how to work formulas without really knowing what you're doing, then this isn't the teacher for you, if you want to have your brain actually worked into knowing what you're talking about and why certain operations are paired up together this guy will help you understand more than a typical teacher would”

I recall Cohen picking on me at various times throughout the semester. Other than that, he is a nice guy, but grades hard.
Thanks....you are good teacher. I have a question for you, WHY do you really like "graphing"?
He is such a cool teacher. He knows the subject and takes the time to make sure you know it too. He also takes the time to know your name. One of a kind.
i think that he is a great teacher. he's very clear when describing the lesson. i like that he focuses on helping students UNDERSTAND the material rather than just memorizing it. i like that i don't just copy some math problem off the board. he's great.
He doesn't get examples from the book which I think is great! He explains over and over again until EVERYONE understands the material! I should've taken him the first time around instead of Dr. Sampson!
professor cohen kicks butt, man! it's amazing how much he tries to get his students to get the material. i've never met anyone quite as engaged with the class. i think i'm in love!
very excellent teacher which i could have had each for each math course

The best math teacher I've ever had. He makes sure you actually understand what he's teaching you.
You really learn the material and at the same time, the class was real fun. Great teacher. Awesome class.
AWESOME TEACHER!!!!!
He is a great teacher. He explained the material well and is always availible for anyone who wants to learn the material.
Very Helpful
he's the best math teacher ever...he's really helpful and makes sure that you understand everything before you go home...homework might help but most of the examples he does in class come exactly in the test with different #s
great teacher very approachable there are no stupid questions in his class so ask him anything and he will be sure to help
ONLY GOOD MATH TEACHER I HAD
He looks like a jerk when you first meet but he is not a jerk at all. he is one of the nicest teachers i have had.he really helped alot
First, this guy is handsome! He is inteligent and patient. You can talk to him like a friend. The way he teaches is clear and step-by-step. Of course, make sure you already understand the past math section, or else you're gonna have a harder time! His tests are like his lectures. The concepts are there
Very helpful, if you pay attention in class and ask a couple questions you'll be fine
the best communicator i have ever had...if u do the HW and get d grades on tests u will pass...not as boring as pther math teachers
I took his class Fall 2004 and received an A. He's the best math teacher I ever had - he fully explained all concepts & was very helpful. And sexy to boot - what more could you want? :)
absolutely the best math professor there is. i've started in math 40, finished math 270 in fall 04 and from all the instructors i've taken as math instuctors, none were the least bit comparable to jeff. he's a very intelligent character, patience, and a very very good comunicator. highly recommend!
He's Hot, he's sweet, and is really funny. One of the best teachers out there. He and his little clique of other professors really make math fun!
I just stopped by this class, because one of my friend has recommanded him. But unfortunitely he is not the type of person that I like. He lectures too fast and his tests are not covered in a textbook. Even worse, homework grades can drop your grades, if you do not work hard.
I wasn't sure about taking his class since it is different from other math classes but the time and effort he and the other teachers but into teaching you math is very impressive. He cares alot for his students!! take HIM!
The BEST math professor out there. No ONE compares to how Jeff teaches. The way he lectures makes you understand the material much more, thus resulting in higher test scores. Quizzes are easy. Just remember the concept. Lots of group work, so it's fun too! Very fair grader. I am going to take Math 191 with him for sure. Highly recommended
Mr. Cohen is SO nice, So patient, SO helpful, SO understanding. I actually looked forward to this class every week. He made math so clear & understandable.
I took Mr. Cohen years ago for 40, but i had to drop. Now i took him for my 3rd time and 70, and i went from a w to an f to an A. This guy is the best math teacher on El Co campus. Itsnot that its easy but he makes you understand the concepts. Just show up to class everyday and be nice with him, hes a cool guy.
he is an awesome teacher!!
pretty awsome teacher

REAL GOOD TEACHER. HAD HIM FOR MATH 40 AND 70 RECEIVED AN A IN BOTH. HAVING SI ALSO A PLUS. BETH IS ALSO A GREAT TUTOR. HIS CLASS IS NOT HARD JUST PAY ATTENCION ASK QUESTIONS AND IT WOULD BE ALRIGHT. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING ANY OF HIS CLASSES.
hes a good teacher, explains things well and is very helpful he gets my reccomendation
He is a great math teacher. I really like the way he taught math 70 in fall of 2004.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN PASSING A MATH CLASS? WELL I WANT TO BE A FIREFIGHTER AND MATH WAS NEVER MY BEST SUBJECT. I PARTY ALL THE TIME, I WORK OVER 50 HRS A WEEK AND GO TO SCHOOL FULL TIME, THE REASON I TELL YOU THIS IS IF A PERSON LIKE ME CAN PASS THE CLASS YOU CAN. HE JUST MAKES IT SO CLEAR, HE LETS YOU UNDERSTAND AND NOT MEMORIZE.
Great Math professor! Helps a lot with questions out side of class; has a different way of teaching Math, but it makes you understand completely. Do all you homework and you will pass tests and quizzes.
He is the best math teacher anyone could ask for! I hated math and he made me love it and I am not exagerating! He made me feel good about my abilities to do math and I think that is why he is such a good teacher. I wish he was teaching Math 130!!!!!!!!!!
There is no better teacher for Math (a tough subject to teach) than J. Cohen. He is invaluable for the student going on to the next Math level. He teaches so that you understand concepts and not have to memorize. He's fun, funny, dedicated, smart, and is a perfect model for what a college teacher should be.
Cohen and I went at it at the beginning of the semester but despite that he was a good teacher, very clear. does not answer questions during class, tells u to ask ur neighbor, but will help after class. tests are straightforward w/ the homework. do ur work and study and ull pass EASY!
good teacher, good lectures, wants to help as much as possible(but u need to ask questions), tests are challenging, but fair
He is the best Math teacher in El Camino. You must be dumb if you fail on his class. Actually there are 22 out of 40 student pass on his class. My average is B+ but he is trying his best to get you an A just listen and do his Activity, Homework, and listen to the discussion. He gives GATEWAY that make your grades high.
He is cool. I hate math but after he is class. I start to like math. He is so cool teacher i ever had in my life. =)
A great math teacher. If you do the homework and activities, you are guaranteed to get an "A". The homework & activities are much more difficult and challenging than the exams & quizzes. He is helpful and tons of office hours to help outside of class. He loves what he does and makes you love math as well. Best instructor for M70
Awesome teacher!!! Wierd kind of funny... definitely loves what he does. Do the homework and quizzes/exams will be a breeze. Lots of help both inside and outside of class. SuPa-dE-dU-PUrtY cOOL!!
He is the best math teacher in El Camino College. We know that El Camino College has the largest drop rate of Math 70, but he will help you to be successful on the class. I got an A+ this Spring 2006 He is a great teacher. Many students still failed his class because they are stupid to understand simple instruction and lazy to retake the Gateway.
If you fail on his class forget Math 70. He gave me an A to his class. Make sure you pass his GATEWAY and I will guarantee you your grade will increase in a 4 points in your tentative grade.
MR. JEFF IS A GOOD PROF IN THE ENTIRE COLLEGE
this is a teacher who knows what they are doing. he really understands the concepts in math. i wish i had him when i first learned math because he is that good. his tests get harder as they go, but that's only life. it's a little hard for me b/c i've had so many lousy math teachers before him and one other in HS. i highly recommend him.
He is absolutely lovely, will miss him terribly. However, if someone is looking for the traditional methods of teaching: Mr. Cohen’s presentation could be lightly confusing. Expect study groups, lots of handouts with activities. For Gateways - don't ignore preparation page. Quizzes and tests are based mostly on homework and some understanding. b
He is somewhat overrated. Don't take his class if you want a prof. who actually teaches. He teaches using his activity, not book. You will be surprised by his homework. In addition to book homework, you still have to do activity at home, not in class if he's out of time. For me, activity was harder than actual hw. Take him only if you are a nerd.
Cohen is a great teacher...very interactive lectures and has good rapport with his students. Gateway mini exams in course are worth a 4% extra credit increase...wow! test are relatively challenging and not like the normal homework but it forces the student to really understand the concepts and not procedure. i'll be taking cohen for 191!
He speaks to fast sometimes, He doesn't give extra points, and always ask about things that he havent taught but are on the text.he just ask JUST theory! Exams are really hard,! and his math jokes suck.
he always teaches the easiest part of the textbook, and texts the hardest part.
Worst math teacher any1 can have. 90% of lecture & hw are not covered on exams. Had alot of trouble doing hw after lecture. Take him for an easy F.
he is extremly helpful and nice he is willing to help out, but i think his tests encourage following procedures and memorizing rather than being smart and figuring things out
This guy really is something special, if you want to actually learn something, take this teacher! By far one of the greatest teachers I have ever had.
He's a really great guy. However his teaching method really screwed me over for the first half of the semester, I got back right into it and he helped me along the way. He's a good professor.
He's really bad at teaching. Doesn't explain things well and he expects that u already know. 1 Quiz every week. I did pretty bad at his class since he doesnt explain things in the way u would understand. I am taking the same course from DIFFERENT PROFESSOR and Trig. became way easier than when i was taking Prof. Cohen's class.
stay away from him. He expects you to come to class and to already know the material. I had to actually READ THE CHAPTERS in the math book to understand what was going on to do homework or to understand ANYTHING in the lecture. He gives out way too much work with his HW and activities and then extra wrk in the bck of the book.
so i really didnt like him at first...he was always in everyones face. but now hes calmed down and i've adapted to his teachinng style. DO the homework, thats the key, and you will have to dedicate a lot of extra time to office hours...
he expects you to do the HW before coming to class and THEN lectures, he does this so you can come to class with questions. and if asked a questions, he answers and explains the subject well through visuals and description and is completely willing to help before and after class. Take this class if you have trouble in math, it will help
excellent prof! i took him for math 190! hes great! will help you out if u need it! keeps the class well entertained and focused! dont get scared reading the other comments! hes not bad at all! :)
Great professor. The key is to do all of your homework and go to his office hours. This class was really challenging but I really learned a lot.
Smart man he is. So smart he helped put together the book!!! He intimidates alot of students... he knows exactly how his students work. Do all the activity sheets b/c he does give extra credit although he states that he doesnt. Dont be afraid of him... hes really chill, but most students only get to experience that at the end of the term...
blaaaah HATED THIS CLASS WITH A PASSION! First day of class he "predicts" who will fail. What's up with that? He expects people to know it all and when you don't he makes these weird faces and makes students feel dumb and incompetent. Sometimes he doesn't even bother finishing a problem! I can go on for hours!
Be prepared to put in your blood, sweat, and tears and not get the grade that you deserve or want.
Jeff Cohen is the best math teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He TEACHES you math. His unique approach makes math easier to understand and greatly increased my perception of what Calculus actually was. He ENGAGES his class, and CARES about his students. If you feel dumb and incompetent, you probably are, but he will always help you learn.
He's extremely helpful. He breaks things down and tries to make everyone learn. To make sure your paying attention, he calls on students by surprise. I liked his teaching method.
He is extremely helpful if you take advantage of it. (ask questions, office hours, si). He offers plenty of oppurtunities to improve your grade. 4% increase if you pass both gateways, drops lowest quiz grade, replaces lowest test score with final exam score. No reason why you shouldnt pass if you make an attempt. Wish i could take him for every mat
i had him prior to transferring for math 170 and 190. great teacher, knows his stuff very well. Class is a bit tough, but one of the best professor I've ever had at elco, and including professors I took at UCSD. highly recommended especially for people who have to take calculus. Class is hard, but you learn so much.
He's great.
Great teacher for faster paced learners. but offers a lot of help for students who need it! Homework must be done by the test its on. but not daily!
The best math teacher in the world! If you love math, don't think just take him. If you like to learn he helps you!!
best professor i have had in a long time, and i've taken a lot of classes at elco. take him if u love math, or take him if math is not ur strongest subject (me). he helped me so much, and i wouldn't have passed with any other teacher.
Irecently took his class and i was very eager at the beginning, but i dropped the class because i was frustrated with his teachings. he would act like he wanted to help, but when it came down to it, he was not helpful, did not finish a problem when you needed help on. He was discouraging not encouraging.
His class is not easy, but he is by far the best math teacher I've had in a while. Go to his office hours and he will be more then willing to help you.
Great and helpful. You should be fine as long as you keep up with homework and work hard.
Not the best, I had to drop his class since he was not as clear as I had hoped he would be. He thinks that all his students already know how to do the math, even if you haven't taken math for awhile he likes to poke fun at those who don't know how to solve a problem and talks about it during half of the class period. don't take him if your rusty.
One of the best I've had. Coco, may appear to be intimidating at first, but as the semester goes on, you'll notice he is very considerate and cares A LOT about his students. He is EXTREMELY helpful, both in-class and especially office hours. He is very smart and very fun to talk to. You will learn more than just math from him.
Do the work and keep up with all the assignments. Mr. Cohen is a nice guy, willing to help you if you ask. If you don't care for pop quizzes then I would avoid this class.
Professor Cohen is the best math teacher I've ever taken. Everything he teaches is crystal clear. If i could i would take all the higher level math classes with him. and he kind of looks like Sam Neill from Jurassic Park. haha
I think the person way below got it right."He was discouraging not encouraging."I think if your really good at math this class then take him but if you have difficulties with math.STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS.He just isn't as helpful and expects you to help yourself or with help from other classmates. His method are very confusing and complicated.
A very good professor if you have to take more math after his class. It is not an easy class, but I feel well prepared for the next class. He is very open to helping his students.
I have never in any subject had this bad of teacher or let alone had to drop a class. He is humiliating if you don't understand puts you on the spot to answer questions gets mad when you don't know answer. There are no notes jus writes stuff on the board & expects u to kno everything says everything's already a review. Horrible uncomfortable class
Great professor! If you put the time and effort into the class you will do fine. His lectures are very clear and he helps you understand what you are doing so you are not just memorizing formulas. Take his class!
Really nice professor. Likes to teach conceptually rather than give you formulas and calculate answers. Tests are very fair if you understand the material. Gives group quizzes. Probably my favorite math professor i have taken at elco
Professor Cohen is the best math professor at El Camino, bar none. His classes always fill up fast for a reason. Inspired me to really enjoy calculus and understand what it is and how it applies to everyday life.
Great teacher. Test are kinda challenging because they are conceptual rather than straightforward math. You will definitely learn a lot from him. Makes students verbally explain things thoroughly, which is kinda of a pain in the rear end. Other then that, he's an awesome professor
I have a great base in math, i love it and i'm great at it, however, he's the worst professor i've had. He's rude and get irritated when you ask questions. He gets mad if you use formulas. MAkes the subject harder than it should be. would not recommend
if you're looking for a class to simply learn how to work formulas without really knowing what you're doing, then this isn't the teacher for you, if you want to have your brain actually worked into knowing what you're talking about and why certain operations are paired up together this guy will help you understand more than a typical teacher would
I really appreciated how he made great effort to get you to understand concepts. Even if something did not make sense to me in the class, I would be able to go home, read the book and relate it to what he was trying to teach. He gives you task hand outs, and they are very helpful in summarizing a section. Read them, annotate them. Get involved!
Whoever thinks Yun is a Math God should take Cohen! He not only explains conceptually but slowly enough to follow along. Makes you truly understand calc so tests & quizzes are straightforward, given some practice. Altho his humor can be sarcastic & mean, he is actually nice and helpful. Encourages you to come to office hours. Best math prof ever!!!
He is so rude, do not take him!! First day of class he starts off by saying you're taking the class because you couldn't pass math in high school. He tries to be motivating in a weird way but it just comes out as rude.
Started off with 40 students; by the end of the semester, there were only 14 students left. When I went to his office hours, it took him an hour to teach me one problem because he spent majority of that hour giving me a life lesson. SI sessions didn't help either. I had to basically teach myself using examples from the book or ask classmates.
You're better off trying to learn everything yourself. Do not take his class.
Clear Lectures Helps you if your stuck Fair Exams Tries to treat everyone fairly
not a good teacher. he's very rude. he motivates you by insulting you. he is good at math but he's a tough and a tricky teacher. not very helpful. i dint like his class. do not take him there are many other better teachers out there in el co. this guy is rude and not even a good teacher honestly.
To get an A: Do all of the homework, come to class everyday, and study the hardest questions on the homework and the hardest examples on the packets he gives you, because he will reuse those questions on his quizzes/tests. Doable to excel if you put in the work, but be prepared to do hw and go to his office hours quite a bit.
I'm not sure if this guy's the best math teacher I've had or the worst. He comes off as rude and shows favoritism, but he does try to make you understand the underlying concepts more than just the number crunching. The exams are fair. I found that, personally, I had to supplement/compensate a LOT of the material to actually grasp the concepts.
YES! He is the real person who wants you to know knowledge. He explains everything clearly and thoroughly. You can learn a lot in his class. If you attend every class and do all the homework. You will be find on test. Quizs are weekly, but you can work with partner. He just likes a real version of doctor who, funny and cares about everyone.
This guy is amazing in almost every way ! He really dumbs down everything and explains it from the bottom up. This is great for me since I easily forget some concepts in the previous class. The only downside is he is really picky about how you show and write your answers. I would've done better but I had to get a really intense job ):
He puts you on the spot but for good reason! This is his way of teaching but it does get you to remember concepts. I loved him and I will take him when I have to to take 191.
I took him back in Fall 2016, but just had to rate him. Excellent professor, a true professional, and you can tell he loves his job. He gives you plenty of chances to improve your grade, does his best to make sure you know the material, and is willing to walk you through what you still don't get. PS. He looks like Prof. Grant from Jurassic Park. :)
AMAZING teacher overall! Can safely say that he's my favorite math teacher thus far, and maybe teacher of all time. Simplifies material, gives great notes and homework assignments for practice. Would definitely recommend to anyone, but keep in mind that the class material itself isn't easy.
AMAZING TEACHER. He really wants everyone to understand the concepts. Do all the homework because he randomly checks for it a couple times. He gives quizzes every week which you MUST study for because they're hard. Attend SI Sessions, they're so helpful. Participate in class & he'll respect you. Try & you'll pass. Don't be scared of him, he's nice
Very good lectures. Focuses on students understanding the concept of math rather than going through long problems. So tests include a lot of conceptual questions, and a few problems you have to actually work out. In my class (Calc 3) we had the option of not taking the final if we had a good grade. Plays chill, relaxing music before class.
Possibly one of the best math teachers I've ever had. His lectures are really clear, he tries to keep things pretty light hearted, and makes you feel pretty comfortable. He'll take even the dumbest questions seriously and makes sure that you understand. You still do have to work and make a really solid effort, and he'll recognize and reward that.
By far one of my favorite mathematics professor on campus. Rather than teaching students how to do long and boring algebra, he instead focuses on making students understand the concept of the chapter. This is also reflected on his quizzes as they are fair on assessing the student's understanding rather than their cleverness on manipulating numbers.
Cohen is a fantastic math professor! He really tries to make sure that you understand his lectures. The concepts he's teaching might be hard to grasp at first, but Cohen really goes above and beyond other professors in truly explaining the concepts so that you can understand.
Just do and understand the homework and come to lectures to understand the concepts and you should be fine. He's a pretty tough grader so make sure you understand how he wants you to tackle the problems. Try to do extremely well on the first 3 exams and the quizzes so you don't have to take the final.
He is the best professor I have ever met. He is specific at concepts. However, that is how his lecture goes also. He trains students to be ready to tackle the problems by making us think. I am very happy I took professor Cohen. I learned a lot. He is very generous at giving time during tests or quizzes.
I guess he is good... Every semester he has given extra credit but he didnt give our class any. At the end of the semester he made the quizzes stupidly hard making our grades drop. The quizzes would take 20 minutes and at the end more than 1 hr. Many people were in the border line of 79 and 89%. It was really sad
if you are good at moving symbols around and not knowing the theory behind math you will suffer in his class, his quizzes and exams require paragraph explanations. To be able to do good you really need to understand the material or you will fail. If your happy with your grade before the final you can choose not to take it. (just for 220 students)
Great Professor, make sure you do the homework and ask questions in class, go to the office hours and you will get a good grade.
He is not good at all. he teach math as a story telling. he is so rude and insulting in his office our. At the end you will not learn any thing. better things take another professor. he is one of the worst math teacher in the elcamino
He's is really great professor for my precalculus class because he actually does try to prepare you for the Calculus Sequences at school. The HW is not assigned to do, but you should do it to pass the quizzes and exams in class. Most of quizzes in class are done without a graphing calculator. If you wanted to succeed attend his office hours.
If you're the type of student that prefer to memorize equations and solve problems mechanically, then I would think twice before taking this professor. He is very conceptual and theoretical. NEVER solves step by step examples in class. Exam and quiz questions are identical to homework problems. Self studying is a must in his class.
