OH YEAH!!! Professor Dunworth is the greatest professor who ever lived who isn't not a Math 285 instructor. He is incredibly funny (beware of inside jokes) and amazing at keeping an excited, engaged atmosphere in a classroom. Furthermore, it very clearly shows that he genuinely cares about his students and their learning. Will definitely miss him.
Jeff is a great comedian but not the best Honor's Mathematics Professor. He did none of the proofs in class (NOT EVEN GREEN'S THEOREM!) and told us to "refer to the book". Jeff is a great teacher but I would not recommend him for an Honors class. I have taken other IBL and proof based Math courses here at UofM and this was my worst so far.
Overall, Pf. Dunworth is one of the best professors I have seen so far in my college experience. Unlike a lot of professors, you can tell he is fully invested in helping people learn. He puts in generous office hours, offers challenging problems for students to do, and makes so many references youll wonder if youre taking a math class!
Jeff is by far my favorite professor at umich. He knows how to make classes engaging and is a great resource in office hours.
Jeff is a really good professor, and really helpful in office hours. Funny during lecture. Confusion comes mainly from course material and not Jeff himself.
Jeff is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is extremely engaging in class and is very good at explaining more complex topics. His homeworks are long and he makes his tests difficult, but the class is on a curve and you'll get a lot out of it. Would take a class with him again in the future if I have the chance.
Jeff was easily the best professor I've had at Umich. I kind of took him for granted when I took the course, but after the fact you begin to realize just how much he dedicates to his students. Jeff will go the extra mile to get you to not just understand the material, but to really master it.
Definitely one of my favorite professors. Make sure you go to lecture, it will help you so much. He explains topics extremely well using real world examples. He is very sarcastic, but you'll grow to love it.
Really funny and engaging. Office hours are extremely accessible and very helpful. Really enjoyed this class a lot!!
He is not a reasonable teacher. He assume you know everything. He teaches in a fast pace and doesn't explain things clearly. He assign many homework and some of the problems he never taught you, and they are hard. On top of that, he assign three group projects. The time I spend on this 3 credit class is more than my three other classes combined.
He is the worst math professor I have ever met in my whole life!!!! He assigns tons of homework every week, which take me almost ten hours to do it. And contents are not supposed to cover in this class. The calculations of every single problem are unbelievably complicated. His lectures are not understandable either. He is extremely procrastinated.
Jeff Dunworth is the worst professor I have ever had. Honestly speaking, his logic and the describing of definitions are good. But he lectures very fast and never gives any complete numerical examples. Assignments are tedious and unreasonably long, sometimes even unrelated to the lectures, so be prepared to spend most of your weekends on homework.
I got an A+ in MATH217 without spending too much time... But Jeff's class almost takes all my weekends... Questions are not included in his lecture, and you can not imagine how much he assigned every week... EVERY WEEK, I submitted at least 20-page homework. And we have to complete 3 projects... And, he is not responsible, never replied my email...
Jeff is a great professor. To those of your looking at the other reviews on this page, it is true that Jeff gives a lot of homework, but this is a math class. I'd say the homeworks take roughly the same amount of time as math 217. The really unfortunate thing is that this class is graded on a rather tough curve. Overall, I loved Jeff as a prof
I took this class last year, but I'm here now to procrastinate studying for finals. Others say that he assigns too much work or is tough, but I say that's what math is. You don't get better unless you're challenged. Lectures were helpful, and I genuinely had fun in the class. You'll get more out of it if you make the effort to go to office hours.
HE IS AMAZING. the course was online but he made efforts to answer all questions and he is very accessible outside the class time. He gives good lectures too!!
He's a teacher that genuinely wants to help his students understand the material. Personally, it was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken with tons of homework, but if I ever needed anything he made himself available and would help out however he could. On top of that he's really inviting and funny.
Professor Dunworth's lectures are extremely good. They actually feel like they are given by a human being, not a heartless robot. People say the written homeworks are hard, but diligently using his office hours and reading the textbook will get you through. He deserves as much recognition as Serin, in my opinion.
Jeff Dunworth is the worst teacher Ive ever had. A complete disgrace. In his class, he does NOT lecture, but has students do practice, then fails to explain concepts. I now do not attend his lectures and use Professor Leonard on YouTube instead. He acts like he wants us to fail and is lazy. A literal coursera calc class would be better than him.
Im a student who knows single var calc well and is ready for this class. However, many learners need teachers who can teach, then we can put in the work to solidify our knowledge. Dunworth doesnt teach and tries to make students feel bad for wanting a teacher who does. He is a waste of my tuition and should be fired.
Terrible professor. Does not teach during class. All we do in class is solve a few problems. Literally no teaching is going on. You have to read everything yourself. Literally has no passion and skill. I would give him 0 if I could.
It looks like all of the downvotes on here are Jeff going through and only upvoting the comments that praise him (which he probably made himself on fake accounts). Ignore that. Hes absolutely atrocious and doesnt teach.
Started going to a different lecture because I didn't learn anything in his class. My exam grade went from a 65% to a 89% when I stopped going.
While I have similar issues with the class format then everyone who has reviewed so far for winter 2022 semester, the problems are not because of Jeff. At the start of semester we were told that the university is using our sections to test a new method of teaching, and clearly it isn't working. But it's not his fault, he's actually a great prof.
AVOID. He just doesn't seem to care. Jeff is just there to give practice examples and not to teach. His class style is based around "student/group cooperation" and means he gives out questions and has students find the answers online and in the textbook. 15 minutes on YouTube is worth more than an hour of his lectures.
As someone mentioned, the class format isn't really his fault. If you go to OHs you'll see that he really does want you to understand the material and is very helpful when explaining concepts. He's incredibly willing to meet with you outside of OHs if you need extra help. He goes the extra mile, just reach out. Also possibly the funniest man alive.
As many people have complained, the lectures that professor Dunworth teach are much less lectures, and more like workshops. But this isn’t his fault, it’s awful but the University wanted Guinea Pigs to test out this teaching style. Dude is really smart and hilarious besides the fact. He’s just forced to teach(or lack of)in this way.
A nice professor who is helpful and cares about students if you ask him personally. However, his class is hard to catch: firstly, he doesn't offer recordings, even problems and practices did in class, making it hard to catch up. Secondly, his class assumes that you have detailed knowledge in that section, which requires lots efforts
he's well meaning but he is focused on teaching math in the abstract sense for those passionate about it - class felt like it was geared towards math major type of students rather than a bunch of engineers trying to pass. Wish he could've tried harder to have everyone pass and do well than go theoretical for no reason.
I had Jeff Dunworth for math 215 in FA21. His teaching style which was more conceptual and less examples and you are expected to read the examples in the textbook outside of class, but the lectures were funny and engaging and I really enjoyed learning the nitty gritty of the conceptual stuff. Loved the class and the prof, very time consuming though
He was sort of helpful if you didn't understand something. Reading the textbook outside of class was required as he mostly worked through examples in class, which is kind of nice except the book is hard to understand and the sections are long. He told our class we did too well on midterms and made the final so hard the class average was 40%.
I think the class was more of a problem than jeff.
If you ever decide to take Dunworth for MATH 215 make sure you understand that he doesn't teach the material. He expects his students to learn the material before class time by reading the book. During class all you do are tough example problems, which do help prepare for the exams. Though he may seem like a jerk in class he is a really caring prof
He's expects you to form your own foundation and tends to teach like everybody there is a math major. He spends more of lecture than necessary going over obscure problems that aren't tested. Sometimes it feels like his goal is more to be funny than educational. He was very satisfied when exam averages went down 10%. Groups were helpful though.
useless professor who did not lecture at all during class. every time during class, he just gives out practice problems for you to do in groups and assumed that everyone understood everything from reading the textbook. however, none of the groups knew what they were doing. do not do his class
I really enjoyed the content of this class and Prof Dunworth's lectures, but it's a lot of work just to get the basic assignments done, which makes it challenging to study or stay on top of the rest of your life. Expect this class to be your main priority. I hope to take this again during a semester where I have fewer outside responsibilities.
Worst professor I've ever had
Dunworth is easily one of the most useless teachers and course coordinators at Michigan. He will, at his own whims, add or drop questions on homework or midterms (made a test much longer than past years to drop avg by 10%). He wants you to fail while pretending he's there to help, making it more difficult for you to succeed at every turn possible.
I don't understand why he makes it as hard as possible to succeed. Thought the exam average was too high (65) so made the target average 55. Test looked nothing like past exams/homework. Is a liar? Said topics were really important for an exam that weren't on it. Didn't like that students left early so made exams impossible to finish in time given.
I really want to say he is a jxxk tbh. He wants the class median and average unnecessarily. He has questions that are never the same type as old exams, and he wants you to solve them in a very limited amount of time during the test. He really just wants to achieve his low-scoring goal AND DOES NOT CARE HOW MOST STUDENTS FEEL.
I hated this person for his narcissistic, snarky comments during lectures. He made students feel like peons especially when he would assign us homework's that took an absurd amount of time to complete. But after dedicating so much time to this class, seeing him in my dreams berating me for failing midterms, I can't help but admire the man.
I took this class with MATH 295. It turned out that his 316 was even heavier than 295 which was considered one of the heaviest classes in the department. Homework spanned over 20 pages and many computations were made unnecessarily hard. I took other higher-level DE classes after 316 and they were designed better and had a more reasonable workload.
Horrible. Examinations are barely anything like things in the past. Instead of calc 3 concepts, the non-calc 3 parts are so hard it will hurt your grade significantly. Tells us that he is intentionally trying to make the average lower (58 percent). Should not be a professor of anything. He graduated from Ohio State. The other professors are worse.
Do you want your calc 3 exam to relate next to nothing to calc 3 or what you've been learning or what the practice exams covered? Then this is the professor for you! I took calc 3 before in High School and got an A; the teaching quality is significantly diminished from HS and I still struggled in the class despite knowing all of the calc concepts.
Guy is sadistic when it comes to homework. Office hours he is much nicer, and by nicer I mean less sarcastic, he isn't really an a$$, just comes out as one because he knows that we know that he knows more than us. Prof isn't the problem, Calc 3 in 4 months is hard to to do. Also, bro made exams to have a uniform bell curve, so if he curves we good
He often "disrespects" students to try and be funny, but it often comes across as if he does not care about them. On answer keys for exams, he called "dumbasses" for doing a problem the wrong way. He is a good lecturer, but I feel like he typically tries to make students miserable and finds it entertaining.
Definitely gives useful feedback in terms of math learning. Take his lecture when he's coordinator. Take time to stay with concepts and homework.
I used to be one of the smartest guys in my school, always acing my Calc AB and Calc BC courses. Then Jeff came along. This man just hates his students, uses curse words in class, calls us dumbasses when grading the exams, and also graduated from Ohio State. He has made it his life purpose to make our lives as miserable as possible, he loves that.
I wasn't gonna bother commening on Prof. Dunworth's until I googled his name and this nonsense showed up. Sure, theres homework that's tough, but its manageable if you're working with other people. Most of the kids complaining are stuckups that came from a school where a free A was handed to them. Michigan math is tough, but its Michigan, cry.
Jeff, it is evident that you are a great teacher because your lectures are always packed but as a course coordinator, should this not tell you that the other teachers in Calc 215 are not doing their job properly if all the students want to come to you?
i hate this guy
I am at Shapiro, wondering how to do any of this. I mean, you explained to us these theorems on how to do them, but you never explained what they meant. On the most recent practice exam first question was, why am I finding the area to a triangle if I am doing Stokes theorem. Am I missing something here? I swear we didn't learn this.
Jeff, you are a great guy.
He is very egotistical and constantly flaunting his knowledge during lecture, he wastes time going on about topics far more advanced than course material. Expects students to read textbook chapters before and after lecture. His exams are nothing like previous semesters, and expect a minimum of 10 hrs of hw every week. Take calc 3 at CC.
A lot of these people don't like Jeff, but they expect a course that is as easy as their AP Calc BC class in hs. They want an easy A, and are a bunch of crybabies because they aren't getting that and Dunworth is course coordinator. Its Michigan math. Read the book, stop complaining, do the HW, and you'll be okay. Jeff's lectures were amazing btw.
So many people expect to get an A in Michigan Math. Guess what, this isn't high school anymore; you are competing against the best of the best. Instead of blaming it on the teacher, how about you study and solve the problems. Sick and tired of hearing people complain about Jeff; he is a great teacher.
Incredibly difficult exams coupled with intentionally extensive weekly homework assignments makes Math 215 with Jeff Dunworth as the course coordinator untakeable. While practice exams are provided for each test, they are useless since Professor Dunworth has changed the entire curriculum. Poor performance Jeff.
The class is definitely not an easy one but Jeff makes it somewhat bearable. He gives lots of homework, however, given the difficulty of the class I fully understand the motivation for it. Jeff is really funny during lecture and occasionally goes on side tangents that help lighten the mood of the daunting class.
bros got opp tendencies
Dunworth is one of those profs that people either appreciate for their wide understanding or hate because the class itself is hard. His tests were hard but later I realized they were more similar to older test problems, not post-covid (except midterm 1..). Went to office hours once, he answered people's questions directly.
His sense of humor can come off as egotistical during lectures and he makes his exams terribly difficult. That being said, he is the best 215 professor at explanation and test prep. He is always accessible for questions and will meet with any student if they as. If you go to office hours and work with a group on the homework, you will be fine.
His humor might rub wrong on some people. Acts sinister and is a self-proclaimed egomaniac, but great at lecturing. If you're willing to sit through cussing and his weird quips, it's worth it to show up to his section. Although it got full quickly. As the coordinator for F23 (and soon W24) he has made harder exams and HWs than previous semesters.
Don't know why everyone is so hung up about the guy swearing. Didn't realize I was taking this class with a bunch of shrinking violets. Grow up. Study. Learn to have things not go your way.
Jeff now runs 215 as lecture coordinator so he writes the exams and homeworks. Expect to spend many hours on the homeworks. Jeff is mean funny, so the classes can be entertaining sometimes. Overall, you can succeed if you show up to all the lectures and read the textbook before class.
Most of these 1 grades come from people disliking the class. As a teacher, Jeff is a great instructor who has very funny and entertaining lectures. While he makes the homeworks difficult and the tests insanely hard, the class is generously curved. Take 215 with Jeff if you can, you won't regret it
Dunworth is an AWESOME professor , and his class was definitely my favorite of the semester. Those who don't put in the work will say he's tough, but if you make an effort to pay attention during lectures, don't procrastinate on the homework, and go to office hours if you're ever confused on anything, you'll love it +find the exams straightforward.
On one hand he was the toughest professor, extremely difficult exams and the homework even more so. At the same time his lectures are hilarious and keeps you engaged in the material. May come off as condescending or rude, but if you attend office hours you'll see he really cares about you succeeding in the class and is very helpful.
love this professor. 10/10 would recommend. hail dunworth
Jeff has been one of the best professors I have had here. 215 is a hard class. The homeworks were long and the exams were challenging. Jeff is a very engaging and entertaining lecturer. He explained the material in an easy to understand way. In office hours he's a nice guy who genuinely cares about his students and wants to see you succeed.
Tough class but definitely doable. The written homework takes a fair amount of time and the tests are pretty hard but they are very generous with grading and theres a large curve.
Jeff Dunworth is not a good professor. I caution everyone to stay away. He shows no empathy towards students and he teaches as if everyone in his class is a math major. His tests do not reflect the material taught. He does not care about students wellbeing and often makes crude jokes. I warn you - this will be the worst class you ever take.
Sure, maybe Dunworth a great professor as people say. But for the semesters when you're left with him as the course coordinator, he and MATH215 fail miserably. You're stuck with a lecturer that you can barely understand, a terrible lab GSI, and ridiculous HW. MATH215 was the most poorly taught class I've taken in both high school and college.
I took math 215 in Fall 2023 but I'm coming back to leave this for the incoming kids. Calculus 3 was the hardest class I have taken at Michigan so far. The course material is pretty straightforward mostly but Dunworth went out of his way to stretch it to the absolute extreme and make each concept as hard as possible, moreso on the written homeworks
This class is hard, but Dunworth is an amazing professor. Tips: go to HIS lecture, create a study group (he helped me make one bc I knew no one), start hw early, MEET WITH HIM 1 ON 1 IF UR STRUGGLING. He wants you to succeed and will do everything he can to help. His lectures are hilarious and practice prob. heavy. He is not actually mean.
Dunworth is a hilarious lecturer, constantly cracking jokes. There are no two ways of putting it... math 215 is hard! However, Dunworth does an excellent job making it way more enjoyable. Would highly recommend over Vig if had a choice
This was a really hard class, but Dunworth made the lectures very enjoyable and entertaining. The written homework was difficult and the exams sucked, but if you take the time to do (a lot) of practice problems, then you'll do fine. The curve is super generous and I was able to pass despite taking 18 credits this semester.
I can't tell if Dunworth sucked or the exams sucked, but he wrote the exams so I guess it's him. READ THE TEXTBOOK. the first exam killed us all. Out of all the professors, he seems to be the most decent though. I would HIGHLY recommend going to HIS lectures ALWAYS, as he often gives hints as to what's on upcoming exams.
Enter 215 as a boy you shall, exit as a man you will.
Can be a little bit out of line with comments sometimes. Don't think he realizes it but can make comments about students in the room (without mentioning names of course) in a funny way, but I'm guessing it's not great to be said student
I was about to get an A, but suddenly Dunworth crashlanded and taught me how to model brainrot with nonlinear PDEs. I failed my exam and got a D just like everyone. I confronted him in OH and he said: “It's not about the tenure.. it's about sending a message. Everything curves!” before vanishing into thin air. Noone is Dunworthy of his brilliance
Dunworth has made calc 3 so unnecessarily hard. The tests he writes are multiple times more difficult than past ones and they seem to get harder every semester, to the point that the past exams they release before midterms are barely helpful. The hw is exceedingly hard such that they are also barely helpful. Also I think he's giving himself 5 stars
If satan is walking this earth it is Jeff. Worst class, worst exams and worst homework all because of Jeffy!
Jeff Dunworth substituted a couple times for my Calc 3 lectures. He proceeded to make fun of the class for being bad at math and not knowing how to do the content. This was very funny, but he never turns it off. He seems to persistently attempt to make the class, homework, and lectures as difficult as he can with little regard for your learning.
Jeff Dunworth, while a very enthusiastic man, has made Calc III so unnecessarily difficult and makes fun of his students when they ask for homework help. He's a fine lecturer and explains concepts clearly and concisely. However, he is an evil course coordinator and I wouldn't wish it upon any math-curious student out there. All the best
Jeff's exams singlehandedly took away my will to live. They were all significantly harder than the 20 practice exams available to students to study from and didn't seem to show much respect for students. If you need to take calc 3 highly recommend taking the community college route.
If you don't have a religion, you better get one before taking this class with him as course coordinator. Our exam averages were 8% lower than previous years. I have never prayed for a 50 on a test so hard in my life. Also he's funny, but makes fun of his students, which ruins the learning experience overall, and made me afraid to ask questions.
test was super hard
If being a professor was about making class as difficult as possible he would be the greatest professor to have ever walked this earth. Alas, that is not what the role of a professor is and he is not the greatest professor ever.
I guess no one is dunworthy of his knowledge and expertise
As a lecturer Dunworth is great. He explains topics clearly and if you're in CoE he does a really good job of showing the engineering/physics applications. As a course coordinator he makes exams very difficult and computation heavy, and the homework is both time intensive (~7-10 hours a week) and conceptually challenging.
Jeff seems to run a dictatorship in math 215 as the course coordinator. Calc 3 is not an easy class but he makes it a MILLION times harder and his snarky narcisssitic comments quite literally calling you stupid dont help. You could study for 3 weeks and still manage to get a 40 in his DIABOLICAL EXAMS.
The problems sets are tough but office hours are almost always open during the week, just start early. Exams are quite difficult but there's 2 dozen practice tests for each one, and your final grade is curved very well. (I got an 89 in the class which curved to an A+). Honestly overhated imo.
Take it at Washtenaw if you want a decent calc 3 experience. Studying took up all my time compared to other classes, and exam questions are problems that Jeff formulates for YEARS (yes, he said so). If he takes years to make these problems and expects us to solve them flawlessly on an exam in approx 8 minutes, something is not right.
I had Jeff for my 215 lectures, and he was the course coordinator. Jeff made the content engaging, largely because of his outgoing personality and jokes, which I loved. That being said, he made the exams extremely challenging. The averages hovered around 50%. It helps to read the textbook sections and work on practice problems after lecture.
People hate on him because a lot of people fail the tests but I don't think that he deserves such a low rating. I don't think he is a 5, but I am putting a 5 to make up for the rest of the unfair bad reviews.
His lectures are not bad, I have to say, but the exams are so difficult that I can't even find a way to get a decent score.
