This is a boring class. It is not too hard if you can force yourself to pay attention during lecture...but that is a struggle!
Course is difficult, but he tries to help you out. Unfortunately, he makes it even more confusing. Read the book and take notes to do well.
BORING- i would get coffee before class to drink during and STILL sleep in his lecture.
Does anyone else he would wear a clown suit to make the class a little more interesting? I try to pay attention and study for hours but they all seem to be forced actions.
The is so boring but if you can pay attention great! READ THE BOOK AND GO TO HIS STUDY SESSIONS
He knows his stuff like the back of his comb-over. He wants to help out and appreciates questions during his lectures. Just go to class stay awake (most of the time) and look at his Objective handouts before tests and he's a breeze. He IS boring but enthusiastic about what he teaches.
The person who wrote the rating just before mine cannot be more on-the-nail. He really knows what he's talking about; very open to questions. You'll need to carry the extra help sessions yourself, basically, which was hard for me because I was so lost, but just know what you want to ask ahead oftime
Worst teacher I've ever had. Doesn't explain things very well, tests are NOT over what he lectures about. Would definitely not recommend.
He is a very boring in the lecture but he does know everything he is teaching and does want people in lecture to ask questions
I don't think I've ever taken a more boring and pointless class than animal physiology. Hell, it was human physiology not animal phys. The labs weren't too bad but that in no way makes up for the sleep fest called lectures. Avoid his classes at all costs.

The class is kind of difficult, but if you actually take notes, they are pretty easy. I don't know why everyone doesn't like him, but I think he's a really cool teacher and very helpful. You can ask him questions whenever you want and he goes over the tests in his study sessions.
His part of the class is challenging. If you go to class and take good notes you should do fine. His grading system is awesome, like nothing I've ever heard of. Tests are multiple choice and a lot of the answers, even though wrong, you could get partial credit.
good guy just very inconsitent. cuts no slack at all. one of those people who is extremely intelligent, but has trouble relating to people who don't know what he knows, use caution.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is so boring! His voice is very monotonous and he isn't the slightest bit lineant at all! i warn you not to take him!
Worst teacher I've had. He failed 3/4 of the class. What does that tell you. Doesn't explain anything. Expects you to already know what he's talking about. What a waste of a semester. Do not take this guy.
If you fail Dr. Engle's Biology 100, you either never went to class or you're a complete idiot. His lectures are straightforward and easy to follow, he gives out study aids, and his exams are ridiculously easy. Labs for this class suck and are much harder than the lecture material, but he's not in charge of them. Go to class and you'll do fine.
It is near impossible to stay awake during his class. The class is semi-hard, he makes it harder. The tests are hard and i went to class. The only thing that helps is when he has these study sessions at night to ask questions. The labs are easy, its impossible not to get an A in the lab unless you don't care. His notes only help to a certain point.
He is a nice guy, but his class is very difficult and his tests are impossible. Not recommended.

Nice guy who tries his hardest to be fair to his students. Is generous with the partial credit on tests, and you take turns among lab partners writing labs, so you don't have one due every week. Not a blowoff class though....there is a lot of material to learn and if you don't show up for class you're in trouble.
VERY EASY class. tests were easy if you look over your notes. he likes you to ask questions. curves tests but will not round your overall grade. dropped lowest test grade. very easy class if you just go.
Dr. Engels Human A&P class is very difficult, but doable. Expect ridiculously tough exams and quizzes. You can get an A if you study his study guide inside and out.
Horrible professor. Teaches like you already went to med school and you know what the hell he is talking about. Lab is an easy A but lecture is almost an impossible A. The scores are averaged together but can only go up one letter grade from the lowest. He is impossible I studied my ass off and I got a C both semesters I had A in lab and D in lec.
Dr. Engel is a very intelligent man and sometimes has trouble "dumbing down" the information to a level students can understand. He is fair by giving partial credit, but if you blow off even one assignment or test your grade could suffer. There are just not enough points in this class for a 400 level course.
He is a nice guy, but this class is ridiculous, do not take it. His lectures are boring, & all over the place, & his tests are near impossible. I don't know where he gets his test questions, they cover small details rather than the major points. He knows his stuff, but has trouble teaching it to students in an understandable way. Not recomendeded.
Had him my first semester of freshman year. While he is a very friendly and intelligent professor, you will need to take the initiative yourself if you want to do well. This means going to every class, listening as hard as you can to his lectures, taking good notes, and going to him personally with questions. He gives you credit for coming in during his office hours and working with him. He'll go over the entire exam with you after you take it, ask you why you wrote down the answer that you did, and explain to you what the right answer is. He really is very helpful and willing, but only if you ask him.
Although he expects a lot out of his students, he makes his expectations clear from the beginning. If you put in the effort you will do well and learn a lot from him. He is very organized and efficient.
I had a good biology program in high school, I already knew the information before the class. His lectures are well-delivered, but are boring if you had the info already. Tests are much harder than class lectures make you think
I thought that this professor was very articulate with his lectures and knowledgable about the subject that he was teaching. I found this class to be an excellent learning experience.
Dr. Engel is a very very nice man. He is almost too smart...his lectures are advanced using only medical terminology. It is nice to get used to that if you are pre-med. However, he knows so much that he often goes too in depth and main points do not stand out (the antithesis of "information overload"). His tests and Quizzes are difficult but, (good
he is a really good teacher.. just sometimes gets off track and says things that don't make sense. its really important to go to class at times but at others its not. good class, just beware its hard! read the book if u don't go to class. and don't bother with the study sessions, they don't help at all. tests are essay and multiple choice(out of bo
Teacher isn't as open as many say he is to helping people. He doesn't understand how someone could not understand what he's saying & doesn't try 2 help you if u don't understand. He gets frustrated easily. His lectures (& even if u get help from him) r very advanced. So if u r not a medical term crazy, u will be teaching yourself. Wont understand.
really nice guy, good professor. hes a genius and needs to bring his teaching down a little but if yur ready for a challange def. take his class. it gets u ready for the fre-med programs
By far the worst professor i have ever had. He failed half of the class. He speaks to you like you have been in medical school for 100 years and then when you ask questions he talks to you like you are a child. Do not take his class.
Dr. Engel seems to be a really nice guy and a science nerd, but he is way too smart to be teaching an intro level class. He taught things that were way over everyones heads and a lot of students failed! I wouldn't recommend taking Zoo 200 with Dr. Engel!!!
Dr. Engel is wayyyy to smart to teach, he should be curing cancer or some crazy thing like that. He takes pauses between sentences and has a slight resemblence to Goofy off of Mickey Mouse. He's a great guy and very helpful. Don't take the class if you don't want to work for an A or B.
Engel teaches at a level much beyond the subject matter of his classes. He is the only A&P teacher so GOOD LUCK and be prepared to work your ass of for even a C. I believe he is a genuinely nice guy but his classes are ridicuously hard and I feel bad for all his incoming students. GOOD LUCK!!!
hard class. he is smart and nice, but he even confuses himself when he teaches. better become best friends with your textbook if you want to pass the class.
He is so dry, you literally have to force yourself to go to class to help yourself. Everything I studied was usually only a few questions on the tests...the rest was what you pretty much have to know based on what he tries to explain...he's the most socially awkward teacher I've ever had.
He is a very smart guy but just does not know how to teach. It may be that this class is too easy for him. He expects his students to know all of the terminology before he talks about it. It is just very confusing.
I almost wonder if he doesn't know what he's talking about, because how is it possible that we all study for the tests for hours on the notes he gave us, and still get Cs on the test? Got an A in lab and B in the class. my first B. Don't recommend this teacher at all.
If you want a challenge take his class. If you are pre-med i recommend taking his class...it will prepare you for what you will be going through in med school, trust me it will be useful. He uses terminology that you will probably not recognize and will need to look up or ask about but it will be well worth it in the end. It was hard but i liked it
He makes you work alot! and you will have to study for his test because they are hard but if you study hard you will do fine. His lectures are boring but if you listen you will be ok.
He is by far the worst teacher i have ever had! You pretty much have to teach yourself everything. Going to his lectures is completely pointless becuase you dont understand anything he is saying. He is NOT helpful outside of class! i went in for help one time and he slammed the door on me.. he is the rudest teacher i have ever had!
He is by far the worst teacher i have ever had! You pretty much have to teach yourself everything. Going to his lectures is completely pointless becuase you dont understand anything he is saying. He is NOT helpful outside of class! i went in for help one time and he slammed the door on me.. he is the most rude and inconsiderate teacher i have ever
I can agree that he is not the best teachers around. There are some of his teaching methods I don't personally like as well. But he is a VERY nice guy. If you don't understand something, go bother him during his office hours. He will help you explain the material you don't understand as much as you need. I actually learned something in his class al
I had him for ZOO 230 and 231 AND zoo 200! I got C's in all the class and i am not a C student. He really just doesnt know how to teach. The best way to study is tag team objectives with a partner, one type them up and one look um up in the book then trade with other students. Hardest teacher ever. Start studying the day he hands out objctivs!
Not only is this guy the absolute worst teacher I have ever had, but he is such a horrible guy. He looks super nerdy and shy but he will completely ruin your life while in his upper division classes. He didn't count nearly 40pts on every exam because the entire class as a whole did so poorly because he simply could not teach the material well.
If you are taking this class, realize that it is ultimately up to your interest and motivation to learn as much as possible. Keep in mind that searching for only "key points" to study for will be ineffective. If you have a genuine willingness to study and put in the work in lab assignments, you will probably get a good grade. In spring 2010=curve
This class is definitely not a blow off class. Lecture exams are extremely hard and purely guessing will not get you anywhere. If you visit him outside of class to get help he will definitely try, you just have to tell him exactly what you don't understand and if he doesn't explain something clearly, ask again.
A nice guy but his class is difficult and the tests are complicated. You definitely have to go to class and study beyond the key points of the lecture in order to pass the class.
His class is definitely not an easy class. Next year it will be offered as a 300 level. A majority of the class failed, but a majority didn't study the way they should for a COLLEGE class. If you go to class, study for the quizzes by using his learning objectives, and completely fill out his learning objectives prior to the exams you can easily get
This class is more difficult than it should be. His teaching is mundane, but you must pay attention and study if you plan on passing his tests. He has "in class assignments" where the only thing you do is sign your name. You have to be there for these random assignments because they're worth points.
If you pay attention in lecture, fill out the learning objectives, and actually read the book you will get the grade you want. You definitely need to put forth the effort though. He is very knowledgeable and I found the reviews before the tests really helpful. I managed to get a B- in this class, but I'm not gonna lie I never read the book.
HE IS VERRRRY HARD AND BORING! STUDY HARD! SEARCH INFO ABOUT THE TOPIC THAT YOU'RE STUDYING FOR IN YOUR TEXTBOOK, YOUTUBE, AND ONLINE SITES. YOU'LL NEED TO PUT IN 110% TO GET AN A. HE HAS A "CURVE" FOR ALL OF HIS TESTS. WHOEVER GETS THE HIGHEST SCORE ON THE TEST GETS 100% FOR THAT TEST. THAT PERSON'S SCORE IS THEN THE MAX SCORE FOR EVERYONE ELSE.
I thought he was a great teacher! If you follow his notes, actually listen in class, and follow along this class is easy. His tests are pretty complex, only because they make you think about the answer. I am a freshman, I have never took a zoology class before, and I got an A on every exam. I just paid attention and worked hard.
One of the smartest teachers I have ever had. He understands anatomy inside and out and really loves his job. He lays all the test material out word for word: he gives learning objectives, review sessions and offers help after class. Going to class is incredibly beneficial for homework and notes. If you have to take anatomy I suggest you take him!
GO TO CLASSSSSSS
He is very knowledgeable on the subject and very nice guy. However, the class is extremely hard. The lectures can be very boring at times. However, In order to get an A or a B, it is crucial to pay attention and attend lectures. The tests are not easy.
I attended all of his lectures, used his objectives to study, and still failed the course. I felt his lectures were hard to study and use the information learned for the exams. There is no easy way to apply what you have learned in class. It is also extremely hard to raise your grade after a bad exam.
This class is extremely difficult but if you have to take anatomy, take it with him. He's a really nice guy & is SUPER helpful. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go you'll be confused. BUY & READ THE BOOK. Study his learning objectives and vocab words and you should be ok. Loved Dr. Engel!
Horrible teacher! The lectures are boring and his tests are ridiculous. I went to class every day and ended up getting a D for the semester. I took this class over with another professor and got an A and we didn't even use the book so what does that tell you. Avoid taking this class with him if possible.
He was a terrible teacher, he does not offer any type of assistance and does not respond to emails. His exams are ridiculously hard and the quizzes are in a different format than exams. He does not use the book at all and reads directly from powerpoints, and often uses pictures and examples from other books in his power points
He is completely boring and weird. Lab is pointless but you have to go to get the points. This class sucks because he is the hardest grader I have ever encountered at WIU. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR ANY CLASS EVER. If you do you'll spend your entire semester doing labs, homeworks, and test for him, only to have him destroy them through his grading.
Awful teacher. Doesnt care if he goes to fast or if class understands, just continues to read off the powerpoints. Qizzes are online and easy, test are in class and are impossible. Lab is a huge pain. This class is awful, do not take it unless you absolutely need it
Absolutely terrible. Stuff might make sense to him, but he's the only one who knows what he's talking about. He's the only teacher though, so you're screwed.
I actually really liked Engel! He's a bit of a scatterbrain so sometimes he jumps around in lecture trying to get back on track, but overall I think everything is very clear and his exams are on exactly what he lectured on. The online version of the book is very helpful with the online quizzes and also it comes with practice exams for each chapter
Very difficult to follow in lecture. He goes on a lot of tangents and mumbles quite often, making it hard to understand what he is talking about. If you're taking Animal Physiology then he will expect that you have taking both human anatomy courses, so he flies through a lot of the material under the assumption that you already know it.
not the greatest teacher i have had. He's the only teacher though for A&P so you are kind of forced to take him. Wish I would have taken this class at a community college with a different professor
If you HAVE to take Zoology, and not willing to STUDY STUDY... then he's not the professor for you. He makes his test hard, but curves like crazy. Quizzes every lab. If you show up to the lectures and labs, study, and do the assignments... you'll be fine.
He's the only teacher for Anatomy and Physiology so I didn't have a choice but to take him. His lecture exams are extremely hard, but he curves them. The lab is what helped my grade out. I studied my butt off and barely scraped by with a B-. As others have said, if you aren't willing to put in effort then this class is not for you.
Dr. Engel is the most difficult professor I have dealt with in college. He is very knowledgeable about the material but he does not make it to where students can understand him. His power points are nothing but pictures, he does not care about students learning the material or not, he is rude, he rambles of topic, overall avoid him if possible!!!!!
He encourages students to ask questions, but doesn't answer them. Instead he will reword the students original question in an attempt to get the student to answer their own question. DO NOT take this class while taking other labs, and if you need this class, take it with a different instructor.
He's awful. I got a 95% in the lab, and a 60% in the lecture. Not sure how that makes sense. I studied my ass off, but it was unnecessary because his lectures and previous exams do not match any of the exams you will take. Gets pissed when you ask a question. Book is over $200 and pointless... Do not take him. Take this at a Community College!
Understands the material but doesnt make it easy for the students to understand.
He will make you want to change your major and people have done that because of his teaching. Hes not at all understanding and during the pandemic all he did was communicate through email. His test are really hard even with the study guides given. Good luck to anyone that takes his class. I would not recommend.
Every lab there is a pre-quiz that gets graded so be aware of the subject even though he does not teach you. There is so wiggle room in this course if you do insanely good on the test. The test questions have nothing to do with the lectures so there is a lot of outside work required. I think the most important thing is the test!
Tests were hardly like the slide shows he showed us. Rambled off and was hard to learn from. And then there's the baseless accusations of cheating. He accused a friend and I of copying one another on a GROUP PROJECT. Then accused us of cheating on a test with no proof at all. Horrible teacher. Don't take if you don't want the extra stress
I think he is smart but has a difficult time teaching college students. There's a lot of material and you may spend a lot of time trying to figure it out in ways you can understand yourself, as he teaches in a complex way. I had to take him for A&P, and there was just so much information. You can't learn it all but get the basics and essentials.
He doesnt really teach to begin with but just goes over the chapters you read for the class. Its difficult understanding the material without really being taught. He gives lectures than tests and nothing else. Its less than helpful and hes not very understanding. I wouldnt take any of his classes again to be frank.
I think his classes are too big, and that he has a hard time teaching the information to college students who most likely don't have much of a starting point in advanced anatomy. Lots of lectures and reading. I had to figure out a lot for myself and kind of teach myself a bit. Find your rhythm and how you'd learn best and soak up what you can.
There is lots of material to cover and look over. This class can be challenging because it's all online besides a lab every two weeks and the review session on Fridays. I feel like he teaches ABC and expects you to know/comprehend XYZ (if you know what I mean). Get ready for A LOT OF HOMEWORK if you take his class.
His PowerPoints had nothing to do with the exams. And there was so much information on the study guides but only one topic would be on the exam.
He doesnt really explain everything just what stands out and whats important and probably going to be on the exams you have to actually study the chapters and take notes if you want to do good on the exams make sure you go to lab on time their is a quiz every lab about the lab before and actually read through the lab manual because its teaching
He knows the knowledge that he teaches at a high rate. However, it's difficult to understand his lectures because he takes the whole time to drag out information, some of which is not needed. He is there if you need help. The way he answers questions is not the best but can help clear up confusion and does go the extra mile sometimes.
I had to take this course as a pre-requisite for nursing. Let me just say he does not prepare you for nursing. I felt like he did not teach well as his PowerPoints had nothing to do with the exams and it left me and everyone in my class confused.
In lab, If you're not finished at exactly the time he wants to go he stands over you and says "I'm leaving" and makes you stress out even more since he won't take it if he leaves. He makes you study random things and puts the things he tells you not to study on the test. If you take this class, be ready to study, read, and understand everything.
very hard class in general. felt like the slides didn't really correlate with the exams. he's a very understanding professor but his teaching style isn't for me.
