take him, easy class, very relaxed, fun too!
He's really easy but is also very unsure about what he is teaching
go to class and go to office hours, and he will like you, very easy A
No Comments
He's easy but can be really boring sometimes
This is an easy class, but he doesnt even seem to understand what he is teaching
Go to class, and pay attention, Turn in homework, and you should do okay.
tends to think we already know the material, unclear, tests=hard
easy class, but he doesn't really understand things either, but he was nice
Nice guy. Easy class.
you won't learn anything, but if you're looking for an easy A take this class!
some people get lost with what he says, can be confusing, but pretty easy
easy class if you read book and do homework, he can be confusing, nice though
Nice and all but makes philosphy hard, hes confused a bit about it
kinda confusing, but do your homework and you will do fine
he's really easy, and drops your worst test grade. nice guy too. take him!

Goodman was unclear and used very trivial, unintelligent metaphors and examples.

confusing to himself and students, kinda easy

unclear, hard. didnt know what he was talking about
Really boring class...Very confusing and distracting...But easy!
If you think he's hard you might be the dumbest person I've ever met
Confusing most of the time. Gives great study guides. Drops worst test score.
Pretty easy...do homework & go to class - reading isn't necessary to get an A
hes awesome! the tests ARENT hard, explains everything! great class!!
This guy likes bash religion, it's offensive.
AWESOME AND EASY TEACHER AND VERY NICE!!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY TAKE HIM!
Very unclear.... vague
Pretty cool guy, drops last test score, go to class and you'll be fine
Slept in the front row and i still got As &Bs. pointless yet easy class
Easy class, kind of off topic, easy tests
kinda spacey, nervous, drops lowest test score, test based on notes

He makes you feel dumb. Class is so boring. He is disorganized and a bad teacher. Recommended for all football player types. Truely intellegent people will have problems getting a good grade.
boring class, he doesn't look at you when he talks, not very organized and talks in circles.
I liked this class, i skipped a lot of classes but still did well. He writes EVERYTHING on the board in an outline form, only someitmes read the book if i had missed that part of class. Goes off topic sometimes, but its funny!
OK OK so he drops the lowest test grade...isnt this a hint that he SUCKS! DOnt ask him to explain anything he will get you more confused. I think he tokes up before class...kinda funny and cool but not a suitable GPHIL teacher, hmwk brings up grade! HOLLA
easiest class ever!!! I NEVER WENT TO CLASS and got As...just read the book the night before the test and you'll be fine. He's a cool guy and i loved this class (when i ever went to it)
ehhh, hes ok. The class is very easy but boring as shizatt..He is also quite confusing
he definitely walks around in circles and gets chalk everywhere. tries to pretend like he goes out on weekends and gets wasted....hes prob still wasted when hes teaching. his class is boring but if you know your stuff youre fine.
Very easy. He's spacy, but a completely nice guy
I think that Jeff is really hot. He sometimes is spacy in class but that is because he is thinking. He is really smart. I definitely would that his class again.
This class is easy. Take it if you dont want to do a lot of work, but want to learn something too.
Ill Jeff is the greatest professor I've had at JMU. The class is dry, but he makes it funny- he uses whack examples. I'm outta the class, but I still email him because he cracks me up- he listens to all this rap, like Ill Mitch.
This guy is a huge stoner!!! Funny stuff. Good class, and it's easy as hell... if you don't feel like showing up ever, then don't. Just go for the tests.
great teacher, very helpful, makes class interesting by using funny examples...loves 80's music
so the class is a little boring but you'll learn a little and not have to try very hard-he's kinda scattered but nice enough-tries to throw in random pop culture facts to let you know he's still cool-haha-i give him an E for effort:)
At least for me, this class was hard. Philosophy just isn't my thing. It was a very confusing class. He's a good teacher, a little confusing, but for me, it was a struggle. I read the book and went to class and just got more confused. I have like a C.
Best Teacher. Inspired me to switch my major to philosophy. Lots of funny examples. Responses to questions are funny too. Easy tests, 1hw/week, no midterm or final. Easy A.
I'm not sure what I learned still confused from the class but I still got a B so what do I care. Nice guy though he's so little and cute
funny teacher but hard class.he can be hard to understand sometimes.hilarious when he talks about gettin ****! tests are kind of hard you really have to understand the material not just memorize it.
This class is just overall confusing. Prof. Goodman is a funny guy but the material is just to much to comprehend.
Great teacher, sometimes difficult to force yourself to go to class. Tests are easy if you review. Classes are okay, though just a supplement to the text. Random examples which simplify life too much, but that's more the class' fault than his.
Not bad at all... he's a little off the wall... and some of his antics will start to bug you, but he's a decent teacher and the material is just common knowledge with titles. Not bad AT ALL.
Funny guy, uses every possible example to help you understand. Very helpful, easy homework grades that boost your overall grade. GenEd requirement too.
Very helpful and understanding! Cares for his students.
CRAZY GUY. always do the assigned reading and the class will be a sinch.
he's off the wall. talks about bands from the 80s that only certain ppl would know. very funny at times. you can NOT be absent on a test day b/c he only gives them on that day, even if your grandmother's dying or your sister has a wedding on that day.
Funny guy...off the wall...loves britney spears...

Took metaphysics for my B.A. and LOVED it. Explains everything really well, has fun with the class all the time. If he taught any other courses I'd be the first to enroll. Great guy, great teacher.
LOVE HIM, very easy. if you look like britney Spears, you should definately take him because you would surely get an A!
Good guy. Don't really have to do much. Easy B with no effort. Easy A if you read and come to class.
The course itself is boring. Dr. Goodman tries his best to make it fun, but doesnt always succeed. His tests are a little on the hard side, and his homeworks are easy.
i think he needs a girlfriend, he is constantly talking about girls. the class overall sucks, stupid topic. the tests can be hard and he doesn't cut you much slack, but the homework pulls your grade up
pretty cool guy, class is difficult material but he made it interesting...not much reading, 1 paper, tests are not that bad if you just come to class
He uses examples from everyday topics, usually about drugs or hot girls, but it's something we can relate to. Tests are fairly hard but has easy homework assignments that can bring up your grade. Take him!!
goofy guy, hard to believe he has a PhD. likes to give random trivia on tests, also likes The Simpsons. the class is the most pointless one you will take at JMU. just sit in the back, let other people debate, do your work, and get an A
haha I think he's stoned half the time. Good Stuff though...
Nice guy...his tests are hard but the homework can bring up your grade. He makes the class as fun as philosophy can get...he talks about drinking and drugs a lot...sometimes girls. I love this little guy--take him!
tests are hard but he curves them so it's not that bad. do the homework it will help. he makes class fun and interesting though. pretty pointless class.
what a goofy guy, said a lot of random things, but the class wasn't bad to sit through, hes very nice and interested in what hes teaching...too bad the tests are tricky
He's the man. Take him. Class isn't too hard, he's a great guy, very reasonable. Learned a lot.
easiest class ever. he does not check attendence, he doesn't care. he gives us pretests which are exactly the same as the real test. only three tests, no final. ten homework assignments but as long as it's typed and turned in, you get a full credit! TAKE THIS CLASS
nice guy but boring class. he can get really confusing and half the time i had no clue what was going on but tests are easy and he's really good about making sure you understand the concepts. hw graded easy and helps grade. take the class
pretty cool guy. confusing at times, but not tha bad. do the homework and read the book and you'll be fine.
freaking easiest class ever. sat there and did crossword puzzles every class, but enjoyed the times i did listen. it's hard to pay attention, but notes from the board, easy hw assignmnets, tests are relatively easy-- if you take this class, take him for sure! he's funny, but cool.
Pretty easy class, just take notes from the board. Ten homeworks that are easy and three tests that are relatively easy. Good guy, can be pretty funny.
Interesting class. He makes class interesting. Funny guy. Make sure you do your homework only about 8 assignments a semester but it brings up your grade. Tests pretty easy if you go to class. Overall good class . Take him.
Funny interesting guy. He makes the course content interesting. Three tests and about 10 homeworks. Beware: often homework is done and turned in during class so don't skip too much. Tests are easy if you go to class. Essentially go to class and it's easy as pie.
He's a nice guy, interesting to talk to, and very personable with individuals. Because of the ten easy homework assignments and three relatively easy tests, it's great. TAKE HIM OR YOU WILL BE SORRY! (For example, my roommate has an insanely hard teacher for the exact same class!) He's the best.
no attendance policy, teacher is very nice, class makes u actually think, pretty much an easy A or B, just do the readings n u'll do fine. theres HWs and in class HWs, so kno wen to go to class for those. no final, just 3 tests, very EZ class. TAKE HIM...he's really nice!
Dr. Goodman is the professor to take this class with. He keeps you laughing and interested. Every class has its boring moments though. 3 tests and 10 hw's make up your grade (25% each). Go to class for notes and laughs if nothing else and you will definitely come out with no less than a B plus.
Nice guy! Class is easy, no need to attend. Just read the book and stop in every now and then for the lectures. Not a lot of HW, and the final is EASY!!!!! So are most the tests. he really likes his job too. FUN CLASS! GREAT DRESSER TOO!!

nice teaching style, do the homeworks, read the book, go to class to reinforce the book stuff and its not too bad. cracks good jokes, one of ym better professors
This guy is effing awesome. He's like a character Jeff Daniels would play (the OTHER guy in Dumb and Dumber if you don't know). He's not intimidating and he's good about answering questions. He's got a very laid back enviornment. And it's so easy, but it's
Its really easy, but I recommend not taking it just because he will drive you crazy. his voice cracks and he repeats stuff over and over so that you want to shoot yourself. but if you dont mind that stuff, take it because its easy
Really laid back guy who knows his stuff. Some students in the class tend to overanalyze information and argue with him, but he's really good at explaining stuff and not getting off topic. Class isn't too hard, just study the material and keep your personal opinions out of it. Pretty clear cut class with a cool professor.
weird dude. his examples don't always make sense and his tests are more difficult than you'd expect. not bad, just bizarre.
He was an awesome teacher. Very funny and energetic. The class is easy, there is no attendance policy but you should go to the class because that is where most of the info comes from and he gives homework that you have to be there to get. Take this class with him as a teacher!!
He is great! He is funny and nice! The class is a little hard, just because of the material, but I think he teaches it the easiest possible way. No attendance policy, but go to class because sometimes there are in class homeworks and the lectures pretty much make up the tests.

This man is so narrowminded, if you think for yourself, especially when it comes to philosophy, I do not recommend taking this professor. His class isn't that bad, but he is very unclear, and doesn't address confused questions properly.
uhm i really don't like this man. unfortunately for most of the class i feel like either i'm learning something that is common sense, or i am actually decreasing in intelligence. can be quite condescending and sarcastic and he pulls his examples out of his butt. where do they FIND these people?!
One word explains Jeff Goodman....nightmare! He has no way of explaining what he is trying to teach you because he does not understand it himself. You would think that the curve on his tests would help but no not so much! I have done well in every other class here but he was such a brainless fool that there is no way to work this one out. STAY AWAY
He's a good teacher, but you have to show up to his class even though theres no attendance policy. Sometimes he covers a lot, sometimes he doesn't. Very helpful if you ask him a question in person.
such a good class!!! Take it!!! It is what you went to college for.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE AND I AN NOT KIDDING!
Not very clear on what he's trying to say. His examples are sometimes confusing. Usually end up staring out the window by the end of class. Very sweaty man no matter how cold it is outside.
It was an okay class. The topic was complicated and he wasn't very clear. But I really liked the grading scale. 86-100 is an A!!!! He realizes it is a complicated topic and not many people are going to get above 80. Attendance is not mandatory, but trust me it's really helpful to go.
This class was very confusing towards the end. The first three chunks of class info were ok but the last one was CRAZY!!! He rambles alot but is really funny and realizes thet it is confusing and thats shown in his grading scale which is awesome. It was an ok class overall.
Not a very good class or prof. Literally said a few times "I dont know how else to explain this" He's a really nice guy, but the material and the way he taught it just didnt work with me. I never really felt like I had a grip on the material, though I somehow managed a B. Do not recommend.
Best class i ever took at JMU! Will explain it over and over until you understand it. Read, pay attention and ask questions during class and you'll do well. Hard concepts once in a while, but makes a good effort to explain them. Uses real life examples and people to relay the message. I recommend this class all the time. Take him!!
He's a terrible professor but his class is so easy. Read each chapter once and don't go to class, you'll get an A on the test if you go to class 50% of the time, no joke. He likes rap and chelsea clinton, isn't very clear, but he curves the tests out to wazoo, I got a 76 on a test and it was an A.
WOW I have never learned so little in any philosophy class... philosophy is the one department when you are guarenteed to be able to call a teacher out on how well they know their stuff... GOODMAN KNOWS NOTHING! This guy is an idiot unless he wrote it down on his little sheets for the day don't ask him about it, because he has no clue, a pure IDIOT
the dimwitted coward hiding behind the preceding anonymous review should, if he or she has any integrity whatsoever, speak his or her piece to the professor directly
I'm sorry but he was a nice guy and all he just has no idea what he is talking about in the least sense... ask him anything outside of his pages of notes and he won't have a clue how to answer you. I got a B, but he grades very picky without any actual set standards... plain and simple, he's an idiot
IF YOU LIKE GOODMAN YOU HAVE NEVER OPENED A PHILOSOPHY BOOK IN YOUR LIFE!!!! HE'S AWFUL!
i really like him!!!
Sociopath....run if you can! I even did fine in the class but he kind of scares me!
this guy is really weird, but i still liked him. overall, not a bad class, it's just one of those classes that you have to fill
He is a really smart guy regardless of what these other people say, maybe they just dont understand what he is saying. I get the feeling that there is a lot of stuff in that guys head that go unsaid.
Such a great class! He is a real cool guy, but teaches a very difficult class. Only 3 tests, but you have to study alot for them. One essay at the end of the year that is really difficult! But he is a really cool guy and makes a boring philosophy class real down to earth and fun.
overall, good professor. 3 tests total plus a really hard essay at the end of the class. he makes the class interesting with his examples. i lost interest in the 3rd section of the class but the first 2 sections were kind of interesting. he just wants his students to do well and he has their best interests in mind.
His class could be kind of confusing at times because a lot of what you learn seems a little spur of the moment. and you have to be in class to take notes or you will miss alot. But really he's a smart dude and the stuff that you learn is pretty fascinating.
Overall great prof. He does sometimes seem stuck to one way of thinking, and when you try to ask questions instead of answering them he just repeats what he already said. This is just my perception, but don't let this deter you from taking him. I give him an 8/10.
he is ok.. he repeats a lot of things he says over and over. if you disagree with him on something, he just stays set in his ways though he encourages being open minded. he is nice though, and curves the grades
compared to what i've heard about other phil professors, goodman is not that bad. in fact, i thought the lecture was pretty straightforward, and the tests are pretty fair. go to class to get the notes and know when assignment due dates and test dates are, because he doesnt use blackboard.
He's a pretty cool guy and the class is pretty chill. The syllabus said we'd have 4 tests, but we only had 3. The final isn't cumulative. He kinda seems like he's unsure of what he's saying, but he really does know what he's talking about.
I have to stand up against these negative criticisms. Most of the questions students ask are random hypotheticals that you couldn't answer unless you were the original mind behind the theory. He does his best to make the subjects as understandable as possible, and many times that's hard to do. Just go to class, take notes and don't over think it.
I don't hate the guy, and he clearly does care about the material, He just doesn't react well when someone asks a genuine question (there's no such thing as overthinking). The thinking is ordered in a specific way and the response you get is limited to what he's saying NOW. I dunno, this guy might have turned me off of philosophy.
Easy GenEd. All you have to do is take notes in outline format and be able to lay it out on a test. I got a 70 on the first test but once I figured him out, I got 90s+ on all the rest and ended up with an A. THere are 4 "papers" that are 1 page long and consist of you writing your opinion and him putting a check on it. Easy 20% HW grade, easy class
He's a very straightforward professor. His tests are hard but once you understand what he wants they get better. Syllabus said 4 but we only had 3 (and our final was our 3rd test!). Make SURE you go to class and take notes and def. pay attention. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Overall, I definitely reccomend him.
I had him my freshman year and thought by far his class was the hardest. I studied my butt off for tests and still got Ds when i had As in all my other classes. He never called on people when they had a question and if he did, he would say that they are overthinking it. He's really intersted in the subject, but it's definately not an easy class.
just go to class take his notes, study his notes and read the textbook for the last 2 test and its a B or higher easy
philosophy has never been my thing so class was really boring but he is super nice. always willing to help in office hours and thoroughly answered questions over email. 4 tests, and 4 papers that were pass/fail. have to go to class to do well on the tests, and i used the book quite a bit. material was difficult because i didn't care for the subject
He's a really nice guy, but so confusing! When you ask a question he talks circles around it and never fully answers. Lectures are SO boring, but he does have a great passion for philosophy and that makes it better. Only 4 tests not cumulative and easy papers. If you're a good studier, and attend EVERY class, take him. if not, stear clear
Ever heard the saying, "The classes without mandatory attendence are the ones you really need to attend?" That couldn't apply more here. You will fail if you don't take GREAT notes..which is hard because he's all over the place. That said, he's really nice and always willing to help during office hours. Just try your damndest to pay attention.
Dr. Goodman is a smug little man. His questions are worded to trick you, and he has trouble defining what he's actually talking about. This was definitely harder than a Gen-Ed should be.
I like him, he's a nice guy and can be super funny. The tests are a little tough and sometimes worded to trick you, but we do homework and basically you get full redit just for doing it so that brings up your grade. He's a good guy.
Stay away if you're actually interested in philosophy, or if you're looking for an easy GenEd. He doesn't really know anything, just lectures out of the book, but clueless if you ask a question or try to start a discussion. His unreasonably hard tests require memorization and a very subjective essay where you have to agree with his point of view.
I was nervous about having him after reading these comments, but he's really not that bad. He cares about the subject, will give you help if you ask for it, barely gives you any work outside of lecture, and gives you everything you need to know for tests. Sometimes he goes off on tangents which is hard to follow, but for someone who has never taken a PHIL course, I didn't mind him. no attendance policy, be careful about tricky wording on tests.
Professor Goodman seems to have a hard time delivering material clearly, though he does know it well and is interested in it. Tests are worded very specifically and are tricky, but if you do the readings/homework assignments you should be fine.
I don't like people bashing this class. At JMU students feel too entitled to good grades and like show off their knowhow. If you are like that you will struggle. Dr. Goodman is extremely smart, he likes to keep his class focused. If he feels people derail the class with ego-stroking questions, he doesn't call on them. Good class. Great Prof.
Oh MY GOD!. I wish I could venture to Europe with him and explore the great alcoves of Cunnigham Astridpark. What a lovely human being. He is truly a beautiful soul. This man made me who I am today and I am all the better for being in the same room as him. He is brilliant, take every class you can with him.
He means well and does want you to learn, however, the way he delivers his lecture is not as clear as it could be. He sticks to one little bit of the lecture all class causing those who understand just sit and be bored while he explains it again to others.
he isnt the worst he could be but he is very hard to understand. seeing that it is still the middle of the semester, i am unsure of my grade but he made it clear to me that i will be one of the few people every semester who fail. take his class at your own risk
The first few weeks, I hated the class. But, once you get the hang of his teaching style, it gets so much easier. Goodman is my favorite professor thus far. He's sarcastic, funny, and a smart ass. The class before a test, he'll overview the whole chapter and tell you exactly what to study. Take him and read the books and readings!
Dr. Goodman is the most unorganized, scatter-brained, least helpful professor I have ever had. He makes you feel dumb when you go to office hours, and contradicts himself saying he never said what you have in your notes. His class is disorganized and unclear. Stay away.
Great class, great professor. Not too much reading. Some people have been saying that he's not clear or organized, but to me, it seems that he was always able to explain the concepts well and seemed organized enough. 3 papers (easy grader on these) and 2 tests (including final). He doesn't use blackboard for some reason.
Straightforward teacher who really tries to explain concepts and engage random students. Little reading for the class. 4 tests, not accumulative, that count for 25% of your grade. You NEED to go to class to do well on the tests, since he covers most of the material in class through extensive notes.
I do not recommend him AT ALL. I took this for my BA requirement and it was so much harder than expected. You only have 3 tests and 2 papers which seemed great except the tests are SO hard. The class is so boring, he talks non stop for the entire period and barely interacts with the class. DO NOT TAKE if you're looking for an easy A
4 tests, not accumulative. Does not use blackboard/canvas. You HAVE to go to every class to do well. He obviously knows his stuff. Every class before a test he will do review, and tell you EXACTLY what will be on the test. I learned a lot this semester because of that. If you ask for help he will help you. Be careful, he can be a smart ass haha.
Definitely knows what he is talking about. His class was interesting but could get boring at times. He does not use blackboard/powerpoint notes. Have to go to class to listen to his lectures and take very comprehensive notes. Only grade are 4 tests that are not cumulative. Tests include 2 very thorough essays for most of your points.
Professor Goodman is really funny and can make lectures interesting. Some classes were kind of boring but if you pay attention to what he's saying you'll do great on the tests (only 4) and you get to catch his little side comments which never disappoint. He loves to talk about his cats and favorite movies so it's fun.
I loved this class. Professor Goodman is funny and keeps class interesting. He likes to talk about movies and his cats so class never gets too boring. I would recommend taking this class, especially if you need it just as a requirement.
Before I enrolled in this class I looked Goodman up and ignored the bad comments. I'm here to warn you now, he is a bad professor. I went to his office hours often and emailed him all the time. After all my handwork he gave me a D. NOT WORTH IT. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is terrible at lecturing and doesn't make sense. Don't do it to yourself.
Good Professor. The material is incredibly boring (maybe thats just me though, I'm not a fan of philosophy), but the tests are pretty straightforward. There are four tests and each make up 25% of your grade. He's really helpful at office hours and as long as you put in effort, he'll help you out. If you have to take GPHIL, take it with Goodman!
I'm not a fan of philosophy, but his classes are really interesting. He's really helpful at office hours. As long as you take notes and memorize them, you will do well in the tests! TAKE HIM!
I've taken a few classes with him, and he's awesome. Not super easy, but clear and very helpful in office hoursvia email. Must go to class - exams are based primarily on lectures. Usually three exams, sometimes a few short papers. All tests are short answeressay and primarily lecture based.
Closes the eyes.
Also known as JEDfrey Chowppert, Goodman is subpar. Wrote a couple inconsequential Phil works most notably Fictionalia as Modal Artifacts (GOOFAM) receiving a whopping ONE (1) citation. Dresses up simple concepts in jargon and approx 500 "MERELY"s per semester. (SS 1 class 75 min). Doesn't make it clear & hard to talk to. AVOID if you want to learn
Imagine that there was a professor who used "merely" eleven times per class period. But that would be ridiculous! So that professor is MERELY possible. Except, there is a professor like that, viz., Jeffrey GOODMAN.
On The first day of class GOODMAN will surely talk about What is Philosophy not? The entire time. He will say a bunch of things like Philosophy is not MERE Speculation and not MERELY Contemplation. But those are exactly what this class is.
Imagine there's a professor named JEDfrey Chowppert. But there not a professor named JEDfrey Chowppert. That'd be ridiculous! So this professor is MERELY possible. Wait *looks at the notes below* there is a review of him so this professor is not MERELY MERELY Possible, but a fictional individual. Or is Jeff really the 500 lb person in the room?
the only reson i'm giving this a 1 is beacuase his voices where pretty good. but that's it!
Doesn't make it clear. But go to his office hours and challenge him to a game of chess. That should help on his mustard-cutting grading scale
While this class was not an easy A and I spent many hours studying to get a firm grasp of the subjects, It was incredibly interesting. I took a ton of information from the class that I can use when looking at all aspects of life and really enjoyed it as an elective. I recommend taking this class. He's an easy grader and a cool guy, just put in work
Liked the idea of the class.
He is kind of confusing because he jumps from one topic to the other randomly but his tests are pretty easy and the papers he assigns are even easier. Would take for an easier grade but don't expect to fully understand the material!
clear lecturesexpectations, three tests and a few short papers, lectures from readings great prof
Philosophy is tricky; either you get it or you don't. Be careful, you could be a good student, and still not do well. You need the book, but his tests are majority lecture-based (esp essays). Overall the class was fine, and he's nice enough, I just found him a little immature and confusing.
Good at answering emails. I hate philosophy but this class wasn't bad. Put in the time and effort and you'll do fine. The lectures are long but he is really nice. Definitely read the textbook and go over notes in depth before tests bc there are tricky questions. He grades the essays easy because he truly cares about your own thoughts which is nice
Using careful you know careful thinking not just not just not just anything not just anything will do it, it has to be careful, methodical, well-founded reasoning in order for it to be philosophy. If its just MERE UNFOUNDED OPINION its not philosophy. Ok, so um alright so thats what were going to be thats what were going to be doing.
Were gonna talk for three days. Were gonna talk on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and then thats it. Um, and then on Thursday youll take a test. Anen Friday, Saturday, Sunday will beparty time, no, uh, no worries about anything Friday Saturday Sunday. So, I mean, this, this summer class is gonna be the, its gonna be a piece of cake, I promise.
Worst class I've taken here
Gives 4 tests, they are challenging but the class has a lot of information to learn. He is a great speaker and his lectures are interesting. He really loves what he does and he is a great teacher. He's there to help and always answers questions. This class isn't easy but it is very interesting and Professor Goodman is a cool dude and he loves music
Long lectures. If you're not the least bit interested in philosophy dont take this class. He does end up curving most of the tests but thats because they are very hard with confusing questions.
He gives long lectures and if you dont read the textbook he gets upset. dont be afraid to speak up in his class. he curves most of the tests because they are difficult but its a fun class if philosophy is interesting to you.
If you do not go to class you will fail horribly. Doesn't use Canvas and all the grades are tests completely based on only what he says in class. If you focus in class though and are always there, you will get an A.
Love this class with Jeff! Great guy. He makes it easy to understand, jokes around during lectures so they aren't dry, & WILL take the time of day to explain it to you individually if need be. You need the book for occasional HW (& to read if you want), but he does outline each chapter in class which you could easily ace his 3 tests from. No final!
His lectures are confusing and he never gives out a study guide before tests.
hes my favorite professor, this is the second class ive taken with him and it wont be the last. he loves the courses he teaches and genuinely puts work into the lectures. read the book and take notes because theres some overlap but not entirely. def recommend
I went into this class thinking philosophy was merely psychiatry. Goodman cleared that up right away.
He's very funny and tests are easy. Go to lecture and you'll get an A.
Go to class! So many freshman think they can skip class and not study and do well like high school, but you can't. Go to class, take notes, and study those notes. Easy. You will get an A if you do this and all of the writing assignments (which are answering questions from the book) His lectures are interesting and I think the material is too!
Goodman does not use Canvas or anything online. There are three or four tests to take that make up your grade. The test are multiple choice and 2 large questions that ask a variety of questions. The best way to do well is to READ textbook, take AMAZING notes and ASK question. Get ahead if you fall behind or else you are screwed...
I love Dr. Goodman. This was my first non-100 level PHIL class and it was the perfect degree of difficulty and really helped expand my mind and the way I think. I declared a Philosophy second major because of him. Take this class!
Dr. Goodman is one of the best professors I ever had at JMU. I've never taken an upper level philosophy course or intro and he is absolutely amazing!!! The material is hard but he is definitely the best professor to teach it to you! If I could I'd take his next class if my schedule permitted it. HE IS THE BEST. I feel like I have new perspectives
Great professor with a great sense of humor. Coming to lecture is 75% of the battle for this class. He does nothing through the internet, so you won't even get the assignments if you don't come to class. If you can do logic, you can do this class.
If you have to take this class, take him. He sets the class up in such a great way and there are lectures but turn into discussions. The test are a lot of short answer and essays but not too hard.
Dr. Goodman is the best. He makes the material super interesting and he's just such a great, funny guy. Pay attention during lectures and take notes and you'll be good! Exams are all short answer/essay based, so study your notes and read.
Goodman is the BEST! I've had him for one class prior to this one and am taking two classes with him next semester. The material is inherently difficult, but he really presents it in a way that makes it easy to grasp. He also loves questions and will work with you to help you understand the material. TAKE HIM
Great teacher! Went to Harvard, has been on national tv, loves what he does and has high expectations for each student. Definitely useful for learning math and science in a creative way.
If you don't love Philosophy don't take this class. Lecture heavy, found the tests to be difficult. 25 MC for 50 pts and 2 essay questions for the other half of the test. You really have to understand the material if you want to be able to answer the essay questions. Had to withdraw. Outside of class, he's super nice and ready to answer questions.
He tried to convince my class that real triangles do not exist, so it is immensely difficult just to take him seriously...
About 1,000 merely's per lecture, tends to talk in the third person, and does not encourage questions in class. Very sarcastic whenever questions are asked and does not help outside of class. Gives very little feedback on papers and tests. The only grades are a few tests and essays.
Good teacher. If you have no interest in philosophy the material is inherently going to be tough, but he made it comprehensible and interesting to me. You'll be really lost if you miss one class. Overall I really liked the class
Jeff is incredibly smart, and obviously knows what he is talking about. But, he tends to ramble, which can make for boring lectures. He also does not answer questions very well--he is often vague, or answers questions by repeating what he had already said. Also, be warned--your only grades in this class are four tests.
I love Jeff. I've taken 3 classes w/ him and they've all been amazing. He is an incredibly knowledgeable philosopher and makes rather dense material wholly accessible for undergraduate students. Grades are typically made up of 4 equal-weight tests (non cumulative) and a short paper or two. Very easy to succeed if you go to class and study a little.
The class wasnt bad, but Jeff tried to tell my class triangles werent real so I found it hard to take home seriously after that
Love this professor. Its really obvious he's passionate about philosophy and is very clear and takes his time to explain everything to you. He doesn't use technology which I really like and he makes his lectures interesting and engaging with stories and examples. I wish I could take another class with him but I've fulfilled my requirements.
Goodman's lectures are not the most exciting or engaging. But if you don't go to class you will be lost. He doesn't give homework and your grade is made up of 4 tests for the whole semester.
This is NOT an easy gen ed, but if you put the effort in there's no reason you can't get an A. I never read the textbook but showed up to every class, took detailed notes, and sometimes went to office hours and I averaged an A- on the tests. He curves based on the class avg. The key are lectures and writing down what he says, even if it sounds wack
If you love philosophy you will love this man. The test questions are taken straight from the lecture, so take good notes and you'll be fine.
Probably one of the worst classes I have ever taken here at JMU. The tests are unbelievably hard, the class average is always so low on exams and he doesn't use Canvas or Powerpoint. Instead he goes off on tangents about material that won't be on the exam and writes random words on a chalkboard. I thought this would be an easy gen-ed, but was wrong
Worst professor I have ever had by far. Stay away from this if you can. The only grade comes from 4 tests which are very hard to pass as an average student. I lowered my GPA so much.
Does not use canvas, does not give you a schedule of tests or lecture material that will be covered. You HAVE to go to class and write down everything or you won't pass this class, ended up withdrawling from the class last semester. You have to be flexible and love philosophy to pass this class, do not recommend if this is a gened for you.
Dr. Goodman was my favorite professor at JMU. So much so that I took him 3 times! Absolutely cares about the success of his students and is eager to assist during office hours. All around great guy and an effective professor.
My favorite professor thus far. I learned a lot and enjoyed the material. I honestly looked forward to going to class. His lectures were great: he explains the material very well and he leaves lots of time for people to ask questions, and he was also very funny explaining concepts. His teaching made me consider minoring in Philosophy. 100/10
Dr. Goodman is an excellent professor and solid choice for PHIL 392. The class is graded by two short papers (which are graded fairly) and several written exams. As long as you show up to class, pay attention, and take good notes, Dr. Goodman provides and explains all the material you need to know in order to be successful.
Awesome guy. He realizes this is a 101 and likely not the class you will put all your effort into. There are 4 multiple choice exams that are lowkey kinda tricky but possible for sure and there are 6 pass/fail essays (if you try you get credit) which are worth 20% of your grade and really helps you out.
Dr. Goodman is a very knowledgeable professor and does a great job breaking down dense material in a way that is easy to understand. He is also very understanding and flexible. You can tell he cares for his students and wants them to do well. If I weren't graduating soon I would take another class of his just for the fun of it!
My class was online, and the course content consisted of a few readings and otherwise mostly pre-recorded lectures (it was asynchronous, which I don't think is a great format for philosophy). Our grades were only based on 4 mc exams (the final wasn't cumulative) and how many of the 8 mini essays were complete with effort out of the 8 we were to do
Dr. Goodman is very laid back and doesn't overwhelm students with work. You do have to show up to class to get information, otherwise you won't pass since he doesn't post anything on canvas, but technically attendance isn't mandatory. His lectures are very interactive and he won't hesitate to go into more detail or answer a student's question.
He is nice guy but average prof. This class was online and he posted recorded lectures. Lectures were long and confusing. 4 exams, very hard, worth 80% of your grade, application based and only 25 questions so its hard to get a good grade. The only good thing about this class was 6 short essays, pass/fail. If you somewhat tried you got a 100.
This is the absolute worst professor I have ever had at JMU. The fact that this guy even got a degree is hilarious. Lectures are boring and never have made sense. The best is that your whole grade is made up of 4 tests; fail one you're done. Does not teach the material and is just rude to students when they have questions. DO NOT TAKE HORRENDOUS!!!
He's like one of those profs that you'd be cool with but his lectures are boring n the tests are difficult, so you don't want to be friends with him LOL. I'm telling you, the other good reviews must've been on crack bc it got all of us fooled into taking this class. very hard n when u ask a q he won't understand bc he makes it confusing for himself
Hes a good professor, but you really do have to work to earn a good grade. Lecture can be a bit confusing but I think that just comes with philosophy. Class is straight forward u come and take notes then take the exam. No cumulative final. Doesnt give study guides so u rlly have to take good notes. Doesnt have hw its just four exams
Goodman is chill, but not a good Prof. usually I love philosophy and am good at it, but his lectures make no sense and are often extremely boring. Your whole grade rides on four tests, none of which you get a study guide for. People in my class were constantly confused. Avoid unless you're a stellar notetaker with unlimited access to Adderall.
Goodman is nice, but... First off, he doesn't use Canvas. This means no notes posted online. The only way to actually learn is by going to class and if you skip you miss out on everything. His lectures are unfortunately a snooze fest too. Only four exams, we don't have any extra essays like other reviews said in a previous semester.
do not take this class if you aren't prepared to think. There are only 4 exams, and he has no canvas so note taking in class is very important. However, it is very interesting if you want to learn about theories of knowledge, the mind, etc. He's very helpful if you just ask questions!
Goodman is funny and a good professor, but lectures can be boring and very confusing. DO NOT skip class. The class doesn't have a canvas page so nothing is posted online. Your grade is based off of 4 exams, no other assignments, and the exams are harder than they need to be. This class is far from an easy A.
The class grade was only dependent on the 4 exams taken throughout the semester which means that if you do bad you must do better on the next one or else you're screwed.
I loved this class! If you ask questions to clarify material and closely study your notes and the textbook chapters you'll do well on the exams. Professor Goodman cares a lot about his students and always suggests going to office hours for help. He also makes sure people understand the material during class. Go to class since material isn't online.
I am writing this in May but I took the course in the fall semester and I still wanted to provide feedback. There was no textbook in this ecourse per say, but there were readings to do every week that, I believe, are in the textbook. Overall, Goodman was a pretty good professor. I think I would've preferred in person but still good overall.
not a bad professor at all but I have found it almost impossible to get a decent grade in his class. There is only 4 exams and if you do poorly on one it is game over and will have to fail or withdraw from his class. You also miss one class and you're super behind and there's no material online whatsoever to help you. he is helpful for questions.
Probably one of the easiest classes I've taken. Apply yourself for each test and have good study habits you will be fine. No homework, a little reading, some interesting topics. Lectures can be boring but he makes them fun and he is pretty engaging. See him for office hours with written questions if you need help. Will curve at the end of the year
Jeff is a good professor. Logic class with him was pretty easy. Tests are not cumulative but depend on previous unit knowledge (it just keeps building on top of each other throughout the year). He does mess up a tiny bit throughout the lecture but Symbolic Logic is easy to mess up for anyone. Attendance is required since all info is from lectures.
Jeff Goodman is a great choice. 4 tests and covers everything on them during lecture. Requires textbook but I never read. Lots of reviews hate on him and I am not a philosophical person nor do I know much about philosophy but he made it easy and straight forward. My favorite professor at jmu.
I wouldn't recommend this class or professor Goodman to anyone, your grade is made up of 4 exams, with no study guide. He writes words on the board and rambles on about one topic for half of class, extremely hard to take the correct notes and know what to study for the exams. My whole class was struggling.
notes are all over the place, writes all over the board and goes back and forth between concepts, so confusing. also uses his own handwriting which im not sure how anyone reads that
Philosophy is already hard enough, and having Goodman as a professor makes it so much worse. He explains already confusing concepts in a way that just makes you even more confused, and then makes you feel stupid for not understanding it. Do not take him.
He knew this information but presented it in a weird way. Does not use canvas and YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS. He maybe adds only 1 or 2 questions from the textbook on the exam, I did not read it and I was fine. I am very confident he will curve at the end of the year so don't be too upset if you get like 75's on the exams.
Prof Goodman is a solid professor. He is always open to questions but his answers can sometimes not answer the question. He wants students to succeed. HW is 20% graded by completion, there is one hw every couple weeks. 4 exams worth 80% so if you bomb one you're in a rough spot. Biggest advice is ASK QUESTIONS if you don't understand something.
The entire class is based on 4 tests. I did above average on 3/4, but did really bad on one because I did not understand the material in that unit. He does not use canvas, you have to go to class. There is no opportunity for extra credit, however he does curve exams and your final grade. He's okay, but makes the class more confusing than necessary.
I've taken 2 courses with Professor Goodman now. He's very understanding of students' situations. Your primary grades will be 4 exams, sometimes he includes homework but sometimes not. He tries his best to ensure students are well prepared for the exams. If you attend lectures and take good notes, this course should be an easy B or A.
I'm not really great at philosophy so this class was really hard for me. The way Dr. Goodman would explain/teach concepts was confusing but overall was very nice when it came to helping and making sure everyone got a good grade in the class. My rating is low only because of teaching style and class in general.
Just reading the textbook or just coming to class and taking notes will pretty much get you an A if you have a decent grasp at logic. He does assign HW 2 days before it's due most of the time, but it doesn't take that long.
The biggest way to pass his class is by attending it or you'll miss a lot of information on exams. He is a funny guy and easy to talk to, but there are not many graded assignments in the class.
he's a funny dude. he'll make fun of you in front of everyone if you're on your phone during lectures, so watch out for that. if you read the text before lectures it'll be easier to understand him, since he phrases things in his own kind of defenitions/manners. makes more sense when you read beforehand. 4 exams and 4 short essays that are very easy
The class isn't too bad & Goodman is a good guy. It's a very test heavy where if you happen to get a C or lower on only one or two exams, you prob won't get an A in the class. There's only 4 exams & 4 papers, but the 4 papers equal one exam combined. No attendance but exam questions are lecture based, so you should go to do well. Good pick for Phil
Goodman is a good guy but the structure of the class makes it hard to do really well. It is extremely test heavy. If you get a C on one exam, kiss an A goodbye. The exam questions are lecture oriented so go to class even though it's not mandatory. There are 4 exams and 4 papers, but the 4 papers only equal one exam grade. Hard exams, easy papers.
Goodman's PHIL101 class has a test-heavy structure, but with some effort, you can do well. The exams focus on lecture content, so attending class is key. The papers are easy, but the exams can be challenging. Unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook are great study tools.
The class isn't easy if you don't pay attention, but if you do and you actually do the readings it shouldn't be difficult if you are math/logic oriented. With that said, if you struggle greatly with basic math or logic rules, this course would probably be a great challenge regardless of the professor. Jeff was great and made the class memorable.
I did not understand the material for this class AT ALL. His teaching made it even harder because he didn't have PowerPoint or anything; he just talked and wrote on the board. Ensure you come to class and listen even though it's boring. I would not recommend this class or professor.
Goodman is a great professor. Just beware that there's literally only 3 grades for the semester essentially. Homework is 25% of your grade and is only graded incomplete/complete. If you bomb one of the 3 exams, you can kiss an A or high B goodbye.
Does not word things in a way that is easy to understand and genuinely made me feel insane while trying to take this class, says one thing then will turn around and say the exact opposite on the tests. tests were so confusing and he doesn't clearly describe the concepts he teaches. he's a nice guy but a terrible teacher.TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
This class is really what you make it. While it is lecture-heavy, most topics are interesting. There is very little work outside of class, so the time commitment is not bad. If you want a class that will make you think take this, if you want to skip class or are looking for an easy A then pick something else.
Nice guy but tests were so much more difficult than the in-class content, our averages were 60s and 70s with no curve, and I personally didn't even know how to study for this class. If you have questions go to office hours he's way more helpful there. There were 3 exams (each 25%) and then HW graded for completion makes up the last 25 so...
does not explain anything in a reasonable way
He was a really nice guy but not clear on anything. The textbook he assigned would say something, then he'd explain it differently, then the test would say something different again. The review sessions led by the TA before exams were the most helpful, he gave a review guide that was fairly accurate. Good TA, mid professor, confusing material.
TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! Goodman teaches off a chalkboard, meaning no lecture notes are posted, and they are very difficult to read. He moves extremely fast, making it hard to follow along. The way he words things is very confusing. Also, the textbook is just supplementary. Everything on the test is in his own words, making it hard to study for exams
His exmans have barley anything to do with material in the textbook. He nitpicks everything you write down and takes off points for it. Genuineley his way of teaching makes the already confusing course material more confusing. He does not prepare you for any of his exams if you have to take him for phil 120 good luck.
PAY ATTENTION and take notes. Ask questions if youre confused bc he doesnt like to leave kids behind. He did have to rush a bit, but read the textbook that he provides esp before exams! He might change the grading scale, so my grade went up half a letter. Overall, he is the best professor for 250 and go to office hours if you need more indepth help
Dr. Goodman is amazing for critical thinking, he makes it interesting and easy to understand if you actually go to class and ask questions when you're confused. GO TO CLASS the content is interesting and his examples are so helpful.
Take this class if you want to be confused. Seriously, the way he teaches is so confusing and I prefer the textbook. Writes things on a board and his handwriting is awful and he erases fast. Also he doesn't use Canvas so good luck if you have to miss class for whatever reason. Recommend finding someone who you can share notes with just in case.
Class is pretty difficult if you don't go to class. Content blows though. Incredibly boring, but easy to learn material if you give effort. Wouldn't recommend taking this class.
Awesome Professor, definitely have to go to class to understand the material but amazing lectures
He's not very articulate with his words so his lectures can get pretty confusing. I ended up having to teach myself most of the information but it wasn't all too hard. An A is possible but you definitely have to put the time in outside of class
Love this dude. Phil 250 is logic so it was more like math than anything else. The concepts can be hard so go to class and use the textbook. He provided a lot of practice problems which is how I learned. Show up, take notes, apply yourself outside of class and you will do fine. 4 exams and HW is worth 20%. He made lectures entertaining enough.
He's a funny guy and class can be interesting, but the fact that 80% of your grade in this class is exams ruins your GPA, considering class averages on the exams were Cs and Ds. Doesn't use slides/Canvas and almost everyone in the lecture is always confused. Wouldn't recommend for a GenEd unless you're a stellar test taker.
The best way to describe Dr. Goodman is he's a character. He's a bit crazy and out there but he's hilarious and I enjoy his class a lot. Symbolic language is like math, so using examples helps a lot if you take his class. He tries to help you during class but won't hold up class for it. It's not a course for everybody but I recommend him for it.
Jeff seems like an alright guy but you're only graded by 4 exams and 1 essay grade (4 essays combined for one grade). The exams are tough and you will only do well if you show up to class and take good notes but good luck trying to decipher what he has scribbled on the board.
Very nice and funny guy. No slides and does everything by hand. Show up to class and take notes. He's super down to earth and will change test dates based on if the class is comfortable taking it or not. Material is a little boring but he makes it interesting. Definitely take him if you have the chance.
Wouldn't be so difficult if he actually knew how to teach. Expects you to know how to do everything right away after barely explaining anything. He's lowkey sassy when you ask questions he thinks are stupid (which is all of them.) I have to teach myself everything bc he makes it all more complicated than it has to be. Don't take unless you have to
The worst professor I've had at JMU. Extremely unhelpful and rude. Caters the class to the handful of students who understand the material right away and has no interest in actually teaching. This is more of a MATH class than philosophy, if you're confused he'll talk to you like you're stupid and won't answer your questions. Only graded on 4 tests.
Goodman is a good professor in a difficult class. He's accessible and will always answer questions on the material/go over problems with you if you are feeling lost. A big chunk of your final grade is based on completion of the homework he gives out now and then. Do NOT skip this class- this isn't the class to fall behind in.
If you like logic puzzles, this class is probably an easy A. Goodman doesn't assign a lot of homework and the textbook readings are optional if you understand what's going on. The textbook is also free. Goodman is pretty direct and to the point, but he's transparent about his policies and curves grades up at the end of the semester.
I loved Jeff and he's a really funny guy but his class is just awful. 4 exams each worth 20% and 4 short essays which are an easy 100. Attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't post anything and doesn't use lecture slides. Way too confusing/difficult for a 100 level gen ed class. Tests/lectures were all over the place and made no sense. Don't take.
