Pretty challenging class but one of my favorites. Not many grades so cant messup
Terrible man and terrible teacher, Unfair grading all around
The class itself is very intersting, but the grading on the inclass essays is harsh to say the least. The multiple choice quizzes/exams are pretty easy if you pay attention to his lectures.

Great teacher. Walt Whitman came alive when Gordon read. I wish I took more of the classes he taught. ---HISD Social Studies teacher

Interesting character, but if your not really interested in getting really deep into philosophy I wouldn't recomend Gordon.
Very good teacher. Class is challenging, but that is due mostly to the loud mouthed know-it-all's in class. Recommended to broaden horizons.
One of my most memorable classes. He is a very good speaker and introduces many interesting philisophical ideas. Challenging but not overly so.
This man is a genius. He should be teaching graduate students. Do not pick his class

I'm sure he would be an awesome teacher for philosophy majors but for an intro class....lets just say this is the most difficult class I have ever taken in my life.
This guy is an interesting character, but for an intro class, it was too much. The little in class essay can mess you up. I wasn't really interested in the class & it was way over the top.
Tough class but very interesting. He's really a great teacher and if you pay attention in class you'll know what to write for the essays.
I loved him! He's a very interesting teacher, and really got me to enjoy studying! He is tough, but I enjoyed deeper thinking, rather than humdrum classes where they say "this is right, this is wrong!" I would recommend him!!
challenging, professional, passionate- be prepared to study hard!
Very enlightened professor.
Good professor for a phil. major. But those of us that took him for entry level regret every second of it
He looks like Mr. Clean, but without the fancy earring. He's not a bad professor, but not a good one either. I made a C and tried... unless you're Philosophy inclined don't take this dude/class.
He is an awesome professor and very interesting. If you are the lazy type, I suggest choosing another instructor, but if you are truly coming to college to learn, take him. He will make you think but if you apply yourself you will come out with a much more open mind.
Gordon is a very interesting, organized, and professional. His class is pretty difficult, requires to be there all the time, and his tests are pretty challenging, the mid-term and final are very hard. Don't take him if your lazy, take him for the sake of learning!
Very interesting, passionate, and fun to listen to. He is often very liberal in grading as well as course of the class. If you are a stupid, unthinking, zombie... and you know who you are, dont take this professor.
I studied every single night for at least two hours for this class alone, and still ended up making only a C. Gordon's very intelligent, but don't take it if you don't have a deep interest in philosophy and don't like to study.
He was a very interesting character...He really conducted the class well and was very eager about the subject. If you want a really good gound in philosophy, take this class!
Gordon is interesting and receptive. He promotes disscussion and adequately praises quality work. Good guy.
The best proff.ever!I'm not even e philo. major and I wish I were after I took him. Hard if you don't study, he won't take it if you're there to kill time. Gotta study, but he is just AWESOME!!!
just drop it now. he's pretty insane. he liked to rub the wall and philosophize klondike bars. take someone easier..
As some remarked, a bit weird. Grades principally on participation & enthusiasm, along with quizes. Definitely makes one THINK. Students trying to 'skate' through will do poorly. One prof I'll never forget! Wish I had more like him!
I dont know how this is an Intro to Philosophy class and how philosophy could possibly go past what he tries to teach you. You would think it was a class for grad students. He is very smart and interesting to listen to but my suggestion is take someone e
Good class, the dude is a little off the wall, but hey its philosophy. His laugh is strange and he doesnt use airconditioning. He could be an alien.
okay- this man is way to smart to be teaching someone that is 19 years old. i know he is smart but i didnt understand a damn thing that came out of this guy's mouth. labs were way more helpful to me and i probably shld have just skipped class and went to labs only. he says "YA" WAY too much and his constant blotting of his head with a tissue is a huge distraction to me.
Incredibly difficult class, but equally engaging. I had no prior philosophy experience, and this class really got me thinking. I loved it, and he's a fascinating man.

Wow, the best intro course I've had so far in any subject. He is on a mission, but makes it exciting! There is no room for slackers, and expect to write pages and pages for a timed test. Made philosophy interesting though, and knew what he was doing! Impressed.
great prof - he lectures to the wall sometimes though - take his classes
he sucks. he thinks he is all that. half my class of 400 failed. if you take ross-fountain, you will make an A.
i would have crashed and burned in this class had it not been for the lab with a great TA. Gordon is an ok prof, but his tests are ridiculous *75% ESSAY!*
Dr. Gordon is an example for other professors, requiring that university students actually act like students and study. Doesn't practice grade inflation, and requires participation. If you're looking for an education, this is it. If you're looking for an easy A, go flip hamburgers for a living and stop wasting time at school.
Hes Hard!!
This class is a nightmare. It is VERY hard.
He's hard!!! I didn't enjoy any part of this class. You also have a quiz everyday and this is how he keeps attendance- not fun!
This class is hard. There is a quiz everyday
Class is hard, but be there, take the quiz everyday, and take very good notes. Also, it is very helpful if you just talk to your lab TA, or any TA for that matter. If you get confused the TA's can deffinatly be a saving grace. Interesting class.
He is very hard. He got off topic a lot. In order to pass the quizes you would have to read. The books are not easy to understand. He never goes over the reading before the quiz unless someone asked a specific question. His lectures were long and boring and often did not have anything to do with the quizes taken at the end of class.
This class is very boring. He gets off topic ALOT... and the quizzes are kinda tough. Read every night!!
The class is challenging but he is an amazing teacher, I wrote down everything he said and made a 97 in the class, take notes and read and you will get an A
Dr. Gordon is an amazing prof. very chalenging and very passionate, he cares about his students and is always around. He wants you to understand and know what he is teaching you, and will go out of his way to answer questions. He is very good at using examples and knows what he is talking about.
boring and confusing as hell
NOT an easy/ blow-off class. Gordon is very passionate about Philosophy, but SUPER frustrating to get through his class. Reading almost every night, a quiz every lecture, and ridiculous study guides, and difficult tests. I DO NOT recommend unless you COMPLETELY understand Philosophy.
He never grades his papers. He chooses to do other things instead of holding up his side of the bargain. If you want a fair teacher then do not take him as teacher.
Egocentric and self-indulged, Gordon seems to believe his ideas are the only existant. This class is definately not one to blow-off.
Extremely tough for a freshman course. Expect to read and write a lot.
He would always go off on random topics, which was very annoying. I feel I learned more from my TA than the teacher.
terrible professor, test are too hard for a required class
He's a terrible teacher. He doesn't teach anything relevant and does not make any sense.
DONT TAKE HIM!!! I was somewhat excited about this class at 1st but that was before, the nonstop readings, the ridiculous ongoing lectures, and TESTS came into play!! WWAYYY too hard for a non-majors class-- he clearly thinks he has something to prove!! Said that he would be "fascinated".. and intrigued if he witnessed a rape!!!!HE'S NUTS!!!!
Ruined my GPA and I learned nothing. It is an into to philosophy class, and yet we talked about nothing that had to do with Aristotle or any of the fathers of philosophy. Waste of time and money, I was very disappointed wit the class. I never missed a class, I did all the reading, went to all my labs, took notes, and I just hope to pass. AWFUL!!!
Best professor at Texas State -- Hands down. If you can't read, write and think independently, then don't take this class.
Very intelligent, engaging prof. Requires a good amount of studying, but the critical thinking skills you'll gain are worth it. TA's are ready and willing to help - go to labs!! Don't take this class until you can handle the responsibility and discipline it requires.
He isn't a good teacher to take. If u want to work ur behind off by all means..... but for a freshman intro philosophy class it should not be this hard. actually no class should be that hard. dont take him. its beyond ridiculous
This guy is an ass. I took him my freshman year, and the way he teaches the class is by assuming the class is there for that major. The TA's did more to help than he did, and he was bad at staying on track with lecture. His tests are hard, and he as an attitude like he's better than everyone there because he is who he is. I hated the class.
As a junior having to fufill my core from a transfer, this guy should not be teaching an intro class. he does not take the time to answer ?'s because he doesnt have time...he thinks his ideas are the ones everyone should follow...this class is going to bring you down mentally and physically dont take him, avoid him at all cost
Prepare to fail at life after you take this man.
Dr. Gordon is one of the top professors at Texas State. He demands a lot from his students but his knowledge is an adequate reward. If you listen to what he has to say you will be engaged by him and you will learn a lot. I have read the complaints about Gordon, but the fact is, most of those students are not ready to be in college. Take him!
Very Hard and hard to understand
Before taking the class I could care less about philosophy; after his class, same outlook. If you just become familiar with terms and positions you'll be ok. It wasn't horrible. The TA's were alot of help about clarifying what he talked about. Always put "hints" up online for quizzes in next class.
Mr. Clean, Mr. Clean. Seriously that song plays to me every class. He is a hard teacher and doesn't seem to have his words straight. Do your reading, take your notes, review review and GO TO CLASS AND LAB, then be ready to fail anyways. Its much too hard for an intro class. Goodluck with this one.
I took Dr. Gordon's Meaning of Death class at the Honors College. It was one of my favorite classes, and I am not even a philosophy major. It was discussion-driven small class. Although it was hard to enter the discussion with the hardcore philosophy majors, listening was just as interesting.
This professor is not helpful with helping you understand the material. The only way you would learn anything is going to lab and listen to the ga. The quizzes are easy if you read. I wouldn't recommend taking this teacher unless you are planning on being a Philosophy major. He treats the into class like an advanced class.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. His teachings are as if he was the whole class were Philosophy majors. I would not recommend taking this class unless you are ready for him to preach to the class.
His class is DEFINATELY boring and really hard to understand but if you listen and take notes you will be fine. I wouldnt recommend him but if you're gonna get stuck with him like me then just take notes, read and study hard for an A
Dr. Gordon lectures to his freshman level philosophy class as though it is a senior level class. I went in expecting to learn the basics of philosophy (history, theories, etc.) Instead, it was an unstructured read a work of literature and discuss the 'meaning' behind it. I attended every class/lab took notes, read and still failed, so I dropped.
Hard to try and follow what he is saying. I recommend taking a later class because its hard to stay awake. If you want to do well then go to class and take VERY good notes.
I've read the comments.. both good and bad, but I'd like to have my piece. This teacher is great at what he does, unfortunately that field isn't getting through to ALL his students.. I can obviously say it wasn't just me who ended up doing horribly in this class. If your willing to bust your ass take this class.
After three semesters of avoiding taking Gordon I was scared to death when I had to take him to get Phil overwith. I did every review, took good notes, and actually studied for his tests. I guess scaring me did me good because I made a 102, 98, 87 and a couple random quiz grades. DO THE WORK YOULL BE FINE. We are in college..
What you put into this class is what you will get out of it. If you read and study and ask your lab teachers for help then you will do well.
He is gives a lot of quizes. If you don't come to class he will quiz yall and if you piss him off he will quiz yall.
He gives you short stories to read which are easy readings. He then goes over the stories in class. So you really dont even need to read the stories just copy the notes he gives you in class and thats all you need to pass the tests.
Bad News:takes more than reading and showing up. Good News:Gordon's one of the best profs TSU has to offer and I guarantee you'll get your money's worth in this course. Really cool guy and despite the large class size, he's still able to engage the class in discussion. That's skill kids. Not for the weak-willed, but I highly recommend.
He seems like a pretty cool and funny guy. I was just not too interested in this subject & the lectures were so long (70 min) I pulled an A in the course though by doing the readings, taking some good notes, extra credit...& I think what really helped me the most was doing study groups for the test reviews! Its not a fun class, but its easy though!
A decade after college, the fluff falls away and what stands out are the salient points. It was a difficult class at the time but now I remember him as one of the best instructors I ever had.
Gordon is a horrible teacher. Do not take this class unless you plan on devoting your every hour of free time to studying. The texts were far too challenging for an intro class and he was horrible at explaining them. He may know what he is talking about but he does a poor job at conveying the message to intro level students. The class was horrible.
Prof. Gordon is a HORRIBLE teaher. He doesnt clearly teach, mainly he asks the students questions so you learn nothing from him. He puts long "quiz hints" that you have to look up two times a week because youll possibly have a quiz the next time you come. 1/3 of the class failed his last one with "0"s. His tests are hard.DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
He is hard to understand. Book readings are even harder. If you need to go to the bathroom don't bother about coming back in. Also 'possible' quizzes every day. Can't be absent more than 4 times during the whole semester - not even with Dr. excuse. There's mandatory Labs. Just ridiculous. Sci classes are by far easier than this.
I would not advise to take this class with any classes that would be hard for you.Must read and understand readings. Lecture alone will not help! Its about 4 tests and 10 quizzes. He drops 3 quizzes. He also offers extra credit if you attend certain speaking events and write a 1p reaction paper, up to 5 for 5 full points on over all course grade.
Very hard class. Gordon can be funny but his testing methods are horrible. Long essays to write, midterm and another test given back to back within 24 hrs. Readings are incomprehensible..and stupid. Study a lot & you will still make a low grade. I HATE THIS CLASS!!
"Possible" quizzes emails after class...mandatory lab course. His book is not easy to understand and in the lectures it is not much easier to understand. For his quizzes you might know the answers but he rewords everything very differently to the point where you, again, don't know what you're reading. Overall I don't recommend taking Philosphy w/him
This professor inspired me to change my major from psychology to philosophy the first week of classes.
The people who are complaining about him being a bad teacher are just lazy, his lectures are really clear and unless you don't take notes or don't attend lecture you wont have to use the book at all. He's my favorite professor and I'm doing extremely well in this class my first semester of my freshman year of college.
Do NOT take Gordon. He basically rambles on about nothing and is way too hard to comprehend. If you read the book, you'll do well on the quizzes but listening to him for an hour and 20 minutes is pretty unbearable.
People that are receiving a bad grade in the class are not used to the workload and readings. He gives the questions to the quiz before lecture, you just have to find the answers. Read before class and pay attention. Take notes quickly and you should be fine. I would not recommend Gordon if you are lazy, or hate reading intensive courses.
very difficult to understand. interesting, but hard professor. Would have been so much happier taking this class with another professor.
If you're interested in preparing yourself for college take Dr. Gordon. He is a good lecturer, yet the material is tough and confusing. Dr.Gordon offers plenty of extra credit and curves.
Reading intensive! Gives quizzes over the readings at the beginning of almost every lecture so try and keep up and dont be late. Go to the labs, the IAs help a bunch. Lectures can be pretty painful, just warning you. Its possible to get an A, but youll have to work for it. Has quizzes, a midterm, and a final. Gives reviews & hints, which help too.
The quizzes are easy but everything else in the class is not easy at all. He, from the beginning, says that you are lucky to make a 'c'.
Gordon is a really nice guy and is really passionate about the subject. Tests and quizzes are difficult if you don't read and re-read the essays. I had a hard time with this class and could only get a B, but the material is interesting. You need to put a lot of time into this class. Unfortunately, I felt this class required too much of my time.
Loves philosophy but is unclear during lecture. Gordon is a good guy though. Quizzes every day about the previous lecture. The lab instructor I had saved me
Professor Gordon is not an easy professor. Your grade depends on how hard you work. If you put the effort, it will show. Brandon was a wonderful TA, who took the time to dissect Gordon's teachings. Go to class, read, re-read, go to your TA, and you will do just fine.
So glad I took this my freshman year, Dr. Gordon is a brilliant man and the class definitely enhanced my critical thinking skills. If you take his class it helps to already be philisophically minded, he isn't a teacher that's easy to understand if you arent. Cares more about his students than any teacher, if you work and like to think he's for you.
Don't do this to yourself. Going to this class was literally a pain! Gordon rambled aimlessly and the TAs during the labs weren't much help either. Don't do it!!
i loved this class the classes were like conversating and the work load was not bad at all.
