Jeff is an incredible prof, makes the class fun, you learn a lot, you can't get away with bs'ing through the class, but if you go, its an easy A. take him for brit lit series and shakespeare.

Jeff is the best college instructor I have ever had. He is challenging and supportive. I have never learned more from another single instructor. He reaches out to students and pulls them in. If you are looking for an "easy A," try somewhere else. If you want to learn, take Jeff's classes. I had him 5 times (because I'm an English major).
My favorite teacher!

Wasn't looking forward to the class but really enjoyed it. Jeff made it a lot of fun and expected a higher level of thinking not usually expected at the community college level. Recommend!
Jeff is a great guy who really makes his students think. I learned so much from him that I not only use in writting, but in life.
Great teacher if you are fresh from high school without much political knowledge or historical perspective. If you want to know the mechanics of writing, this is not the class for you. If you want to learn how to debate politically charged issues, then take this class.
Ah! Such a good teacher with great passion for his job. We would get lost in class discussions and forget to check the clock. Some days everyone would leave late, on accident, just because we were so involved. He really tries to help students understand writing.
Take WR122 from him if you like double the work.
Jeff was a fascinating teacher. There were times when i got frusterated with him but it was as he says good frustration. If you arn't willing to work your ass off dont bother. I literitally had dreams about the class i worked that hard. Like he says, an A isnt given its earned. Good luck!
Very helpful and fun professor. I highly suggest the class and the instructor.
Jeff is amazing. He's a very fair grader and he really helps his students to think. I thoroughly enjoyed his class.
Jeff was a very good teacher, he was just as interested in coming to class as he would want you to be. On many occasions he would assign a reading that is philosophically sound, and profound. The work load was pretty darn high, he did expect at the very least an entire written page to have ready for every class.
Great teacher who pushed his student hard. He expects students to act like college students and the work load is more than most 121 writing classes. He was always available to students who needed the extra help though and liked to have conversations in his teachings. I recommend him if you are truly interested in developing stronger critical thinki
great teacher...way too much homework
Funny guy, great teacher and kees it real. Don't bother trying to find the easy way out of his homework - you will utterly fail. I learned a lot and enjoyed the work involved, even though there was a lot of it. Interesting class, always.
He was.. alright. He was usually enthusiastic and fun, but expected his students to be OBSESSED with the material like him. He claimed to be easy going and nice to everyone, but he wasn't really. On one paper I wrote that I felt the article I was reviewing was good, but over did the point. He wrote that my review was "anti intelligent non-sense"
Great instructor. Took his Literature of Bob Dylan class and it blew me away. Hard work pays off. You will not get by trying to skate by Jeff. He expects you to be present and be involved in your work. And it's worth every bit.
READ THIS REVIEW. I took his 122 class, the workload is HARD! but you will learn SO much info about writing!!!Jeff is extremely intimidating, and comes across very strict but is SO SMART. you will be writing papers 24/7 but he lets students do late work for a full grade, and also lets you revise papers for better grade. he really helps you learn!
He'll publicly humiliate anyone who shows up late-- thankfully I never did, but I felt bad for the kids who did. Later learned some of his conventions were wrong, but I still learned a fair bit and wrote some great papers while in his class. Prepare to make this class your priority, and he's strict, but you'll learn the material!
Best professor I've ever had. He is obsessed with the material but you'll learn a ton about society the class will complete change the way you look at culture. He is kind of strict but by the end of the class you will be a much better writer.
He is not an open minded professor. He thinks he is always right even though, students continue to prove him wrong. His assignments are confusing and pointless.
Great class and learning enviornent, you'll learn tons. Teacher has high expectations of you, which will drive you to do your best.
Not very accepting of ideas that clash with his. Very opinionated.
Jeff is definitely the best professor I had in my college experience. In fact, I recommended him for a Professor of the Year Award. That being said, he is very demanding and the workload is enormous (too much in my opinion). Additionally, he is very politically opinionated and at times that factors into his discussions. Be prepared to think.
He says what he means and he means what he says. He expects that the students in his class are there to learn and experience an education. He encourages his students to expand their horizons and learn from their mistakes. Being creative, critical, and having the ability to participate in class discussions will make a difference in how well you do.
Probably one of the most opinionated person i have ever met. Anything you say is wrong, and i thought that he was very unprofessional. I will never recommend him to anyone
He is a love-or hate instructor. I am a 4. student who received a C- in his WR122 class. I became frustrated with his ego and lack of ability to see beyond his own opinions. His grading appears to be determined on whether or not he likes you.Re-write all you want. your assignments will not be correct. Be preapred to be humiliated and/or insulted.
AMAZING professor. he understanding, generous, intelligent, kind etc. His office is open for you to ask questions or just chat. He treats you as his equal and is eager to teach you as well as learn from you. Be prepared for a heavy work load though.
His class was great. You are required to go to office hours a couple of times during the term, it is well worth your while. He does not have a late policy making his class easy to get an A. I turned in my assignments during office hours everyday after class. Feedback is immense and he is understanding when education and personal-life have conflicts.
If you want to learn to write, and understand writing this is the place to be. Jeff is great--very dedicated instructor.
ENG 270 - Bob Dylan. Take this class AND this professor! You will work hard, and if you do, you will be rewarded. A great presence in class and accessible out of class. Will engage you as much as you want. If you like to think and participate, you will like Jeff. If you think class is about eating a doughnut, you may not. He is an A+ prof.
Jeff is a dedicated teacher, I took him for the entire 100 level writing series my first 2 years of college. He is tuff but if you put in the effort you'll be rewarded and most importantly you'll learn to write college level essays.
Jeff teaches this class like it should be taught. He expects you to be prepared and to have input on the material. Be prepared to read and write every day. I recommend getting a jump start as soon as you can on Moodle. He sends the syllabus out early and that READING SHOULD NOT BE PROCRASTINATE if you want to enjoy this great class
He was not good at teaching the material that he wanted you to learn. He is unorganized and rarely discussed the topics that were assigned. He tried to cover too much material and so you never learned anything really well. He didn't project clear learning objectives on his syllabus and frequently berated students for not being on his level .
He teaches a class on Dylan's poetry, but it should be labeled I am a huge Dylan groupie". The class teaches little about poetry and alot about any trivia that a groupie would want to know about Bob Dylan. On top of that he assumes you know much about poetry, but teaches very little about that subject. Condescending and arrogant,
Jeff is a left wing teacher. At times I thought I was in a sociology class. The readings in the class are from extremely left point of view ( Ward Churchill ). Don't argue your own opinion, just follow his A If you can ignore that, he will make you better writer. The work load is heavy for a entry level class.
The class is very challenging but worth it if you rise to the occasion. Jeff isn't easy to impress, so when you work hard and get that "pat on the back" from him it feels great. He's always available to give help or point you in the right direction. He can be snappy though, sometimes it may seem like you have to walk on eggshells.
For a writing class their is so much reading and assignments that go with the reading it takes up a lot of your time. Especially if you have an assignment due every class. Wouldn't recommend if you want to have a life. Also this may be irrelevant but you are not aloud to use the bathroom when in his two hour class but he is.. He is rude at times.
Mr. Harrison is great! At first I was not a fan, but in the end I really enjoyed his class. He gives his students great feed back on every assignment. He encourages writing about things that you are interested in. He also allows late work and revisions for every assignment, so if you are willing to put in a lot of work you can earn an A.
Jeff is a fantastic teacher, and I actually enjoyed this course. The work load is A LOT though, so do not take ENG 253 with him if you don't have time for 5-15 hours of hw a week. You must remember to keep up with journaling, reading, posting, and studying, other why's you will fall behind and not be able to catch up.
This professor is passionate about teaching. His class is one of the hardest I have ever taken, but he is right there to help you through it. He encourages students to visit during office hours for any questions or problems that arise. He wants his students to learn and be successful, and he works hard to ensure that happens.
He is a really passionate teacher and expects a lot from you. Do NOT take if you want an easy A/class. Jeff helped me become a better writer but it took a lot of work. I redid all my essays and homework to get an A. He gives a lot of homework but gives a great amount of feedback so you can improve your writing skills.
He's very strict and close minded. He voices his opinions clearly (i.e. cell phones are "brainwashing" us, so he won't allow them on the table). With that aside, he's a very hard grader but allows for re-dos on all assignments, which helps a lot. The class was really eye-opening to relevant issues, but the homework is time consuming and intense.
He was my professor in 1998. I have not forgotten his incredible discussions. He is straightforward and expects participation. A++++
Be sure to listen to what he says about a text. He will tell students that they were incorrect (frequently) about their interpretation of the text. He allows re-dos of most assignments, but a large part of that is because his requirements up front are extremely vague. Also, be sure to be early because class almost always starts a few minutes early.
Jeff is the best and truest teacher I've ever had by a mile. At first you might hate him (I know I did) but once I went to office hours and got to know him I loved him. He does his best to involve each and every student, and he will not hesitate to call you out so be prepared. Hard-ass, old school type dude. Very smart, and will force you to THINK
Homework is due almost every single class meeting. He is a tough grader, In my class only one student received an A on the first paper due. This is a difficult course . With that said he is a good Professor who wants to help and students and I would take him again.
Tons of homework. Nice sometimes-rude others. Very opinionated. Do not take if you want to have a life. Takes writing very seriously. Would not recommend.
Jeff's very passionate about writing and about social injustice, which is a constant focus of the class. This can be overwhelming if you're sensitive to such issues as there's a /lot/ of homework and almost all of it involves you connecting with the readings, and it's easy to then absorb all that negativity. Avoid that, and it's a worthwhile class.
His class was definitely hard, but that wasn't the problem. He was constantly belittling students and guilt-tripping them for no reason. It was VERY clear to me that he had no respect for me, or any of my fellow students. He thinks that he knows everything and nobody else knows anything, and every time I have an opinion he devalued it. DO NOT TAKE.
This class is a lot of work. Jeff can be difficult to like at first but you will undoubtedly gain a lot of respect for him throughout this course. Jeff is one of the most aware and perspective enhancing teachers you will ever have. I had a hard time keeping up with the work load but his ability to think and teach kept me engaged.
I understand why a lot of people find Jeff off-putting and arrogant, even rude (he kind of is), but he's probably the best instructor I've had at Lane. He holds his students to an extremely high standard, which encouraged me to live up to my full potential as a writer and critical thinker. Be prepared for a lot of writing and close, deep reading.
Dont take if you want a good grade. I liked his feed back on homework and essays (you will learn) but I would never take him again. He gives papers back quickly but doesnt put grades on them. He is egotistical, belittles student opinions, class is more of a sociology course, and was just outright rude and grumpy for half of the term.
He gave some useful homework for thinking/writing about the readings. But he himself was counterproductive in class. Very demeaning towards students - calling public humiliation for minor mistakes, etc. Lectures are mostly about his own political opinions, not writing. And he'll only tell you your non-final grades if you visit him outside class.
He started our first class by introducing himself and claiming he "works harder than any other faculty member in the school" because he "talks to them"... can't say that gave off a very good impression. He spends most of his class telling personal stories, and when he goes over the lessons he speaks fast, so keep up or you'll fall majorly behind.
Homework due every day class is held, if you are not ready for the massive work load, do not take!!! gives a lot of helpful advice when in exploring literacy, but is also demeaning to students at times.
A really good teacher in terms of giving feedback about your writing. He is always willing to help to improve your writing. His writing papers are turned in for credit, but if you want that A, it's always best to re-do the paper, which always ends up being twice the work. Be prepared for the writing assignment to be about social/political issues.
He's pretty opinionated, but it's not hard to get onto his good side. If you participate and do the homework you will do fine. He allows revisions and is willing to help anyone with any struggles they come across. There is a lot of homework, but it's not hard to get it done in an hour or two if you just sit down and do it. Plus he gives some EC.
Jeff tells a lot of personal story's in class that are not relevant to the class. He doesn't put your grades up on moodle and doesn't tell you your grade unless you talk to him. Not expilcite enough on what his grading expectations are. Do not take unless you are looking to struggle through writing 121.
Dr. Jeff Harrison is one of very few remaining exceptional teachers I've come across. He is extremely intelligent and wants only for everyone he teaches to become a better writer. He doesn't put up with students who "just show up", and expect to pass. Harrison allows students to revise HW and Essays as many times as they want in order to get 100%.
Dr. Harrison is one of the best English teachers I have had in a long time. I am a fairly good writer and Harrison helped me hone my skills to college level. I completely understand why some people don't like him. At first, I didn't either. But after talking to him, he truly cares about your success. Be prepared for a lot of work and lots of talk
Dr. Harrison is a very passionate professor but he can also be insanely difficult to follow. He expects a lot from his students and if you arent following along and you get called on, he could potentially make you feel very dumb. Dont expect him to grade nicely either. Good guy, just way too serious.
This is an exceptional professor, but don't dink around in his class. He challenges your thinking and the way the world wants you to think. If you actually pay attention and work hard, there are so many benefits to taking this class. He is a kind soul. He reminds me of a wizard and I really appreciate him.
Read some other reviews and yes, Jeff is challenging but not in the good way. I had to drop the class because of the amount of homework he piled on. He was making me fall behind in my other classes. It's a WR121 class it should not be the most time consuming class I have in Community College. He needs to understand that students have other classes
2 Very complicated assignments a week, that are not very easy to follow. Class page in very confusing. Not a good professor for a full time student or some one who doesnt have a lot of time on their hands. Hes a great guy and someone you can laugh with but in the end his class isnt the most effective and its not worth the money or the effort.
Awful class, takes up more time than the credits say. I spend more time on this class than my part time job and Im still not making progress. I dont know if its just because its online now or what but this is probably the worst class Ive ever taken. I do not recommend.
Dr. Harrison seemed like a really cool guy at first. I find his class really hard to keep up with. He assigns so many writing assignments. If you skip a class he will group e-mail you and the other students attempting to embarrass you? Calling people out in class discussions happens regularly. Maybe its due to COVID and online classes.
This class was hard, but I loved it so much I took his Writing 122 the next term. If you want to learn a lot, and have a great college experience, you won't regret taking it. Dr. Harrison a really good instructor and you will quickly learn that EVERYTHING he does in his class is with purpose. A sign of a great educator. I highly recommend him.
Jeff is tough on you. I learned a lot in his class, but boy did I have to work for it. I think that I would do better taking another class from him with the experience of his teaching methods. Just make sure you put in more effort than you think you need to, and you should be ok
Worst teacher I've ever had. Do not take.
This teacher is extremely difficult, but he will create a good writer out of you! His class takes a lot of thought, each week I'd be lucky if I didn't spend at least 15-20 hours on his assignments. Good luck.
Professor Harrison is without a doubt the best professor I've ever had. His classes are challenging but exceptionally rewarding--not only will your writing improve but you'll start to look at the world in a more critical manner. He assigns a lot of homework but doesn't assign late penalties for anything except our midterm & final essays.
Harrison is probably the hardest teacher I've had so far. With him it seems no matter what I do there are a million corrections to be had. He also will give you a zero if you miss even one part of an assignment. Also, god help you if you use a passive verb.
Nature Literature with Professor Harrison was by far the most difficult English course I have ever taken, but my goodness, it was worth it. I took this class in fall of 2020, and I miss it almost everyday. For those who wish to redefine their relationship with nature, this is the class for you. The course is tough, but don't let that scare you.
Dr. Harrison's class, lectures, and assignments are very thoughtful. He does a great job not only giving students excellent academic techniques but encourages learning of critical thinking that will set you up for "real-life" situations. His course is SO applicable. The group workeven over Zoomis very engaging and interesting. TAKE THIS COURSE!
WORST TEACHER EVER. Barely discusses future hmwk, instead talks about his political beliefs. Marks you down points if projects don't agree with his beliefs. Expects you to remember everything to the word from handouts. He doesn't teach but instead tells you to look at hundreds of articles you are required to read. WORST TEACHER EVER. DO NOT TAKE.
Requires 15+ hours per week on just hmwk to get a decent grade. Demeans and belittles students. Barely discussed homework but instead personal experiences and opinions. DO NOT express opinions against his own, or else you lose points. Tough Grader. WORST PROFESSOR I've ever had. Expect to rewrite every assignment.
This professor was a total pain in the ass. Thinks that WR122 is something that should be uber hard to pass. Easy as all get, but he just makes it way more difficult than it needs to be. DON'T TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS. His online class is structured like hot ass. You will be miserable the entire term and this class will stress you out.
You will only have time for this class. He's extremely strict with grammar, punctuation, verbs, EVERYTHING. He assigns weekend homework, you have forums to post to, his moodle is very confusing, and his standards are incredibly high, but you can turn in late work. Not essays though. If I wasn't taking any other courses, this class wouldn't be bad.
Very strict. Gets mad when you arrive late, pack up early, go the bathroom during class etc. Grades weird with checks and checks pluses. I revised multiple essays throughout the term and revise EVERY non-checkplus-essay at the end (30+ pg). Does not tell you your grades until you get your final grade. VERY politically one-sided so you better agree.
This class will make you a better writer. There were two writing assignments per week, but each was a double spaced page of your own commentary related to the short reading. What many people seem to be mad about is that this class requires you to think! He is very available outside of class, but students must make the effort to meet with him.
He shuts down students who do not agree with his political beliefs, which he spends more time teaching about than actual writing. Does not promote critical thinking. Very harsh, doesn't allow students to use the bathroom during 2hr class or pack up until he is finished teaching, even though that might be 15min after class should end. DO NOT TAKE!!!
If you approach this course with an open mind, it very well may be the best course you'll ever take. Dr. Harrison cares about what he teaches, and provides excellent course material. This class will turn you from a writer to a DIGGER (you'll get it when you take the class. Would absolutely take again!
Professor Harrison is a must-have teacher if you desire real education. I took both WR121 and 122 with him and would recommend anyone else do the same that is trying to truly improve both their writing and ways of thinking. Difficult class, but in the best kind of way. Be prepared to write good essays. Problem-solving education at its finest!
This class was one of the hardest classes I have taken yet. There are assignments for each class and lots of paper is required (get ready to print a lot.) He does get the best work out of you. Would be a 5-star if he didn't pick on students so much, and didn't have such high standards set for a first-year writing class.
To an extent, I do respect him. I did learn from this class. I found the issues we discussed to be really valuable. I like how he grades homework. Beyond that, I do not like him. He is the most condescending person I have ever met. He gives far to much homework, and no in class time to do assignments.
Must have books ready by day one. Always be there you only have one free pass. Homework every night (lots of reading and writing). Always do your hw ready. Amazing topics. In class large/small group discussions. Three main essays. No tests or quizzes. Wants you to think, dig deeper. "So what?" Read syllabus and don't ask dumb questions.
Prof. Harrison cares for his students. While the class is challenging he is always there to support his students. I recommend his class if you want to become a better thinker and writer.
Professor Harrison is great! He expects a lot from you, but that's because he wants you to learn as much as possible. Also, he works hard to give you good feedback, and prioritizes you. He doesn't require students to do anything he doesn't do himself. He's strict and can act a little demeaning sometimes, but he has students best interests in mind.
He challenges you in class and at home with challenging assignments and essays. You will learn a lot, but you will also have to do a lot of work. If you are just here for the writing credit, I would not recommend this professor. Overall, cool and understanding professor as long as you are not rude to him.
Pros: - Professor is passionate about teaching and helping students - Allows late work - Gives good concrete feedback and resources to fix errors Cons: - Prof is overly nitpicky about certain things - Prof was very condescending in a 1-on-1 environment, so I avoided office hours as much as possible - Very political class - Moodle is a jungle
By far the best writing teacher I've ever had. Professor Harrison isn't the easiest, but he truly cares about challenging your thinking and pushing you to be your best. Professor Harrison's dedication to his students sets him apart from other teachers I've had, and I am grateful for his impact on my thinking as well as my writing abilities.
Nice if you agree with him. There were any racist events during his classes, I ended up getting a bad grade on my final paper because I talked about racism and used a reference from one of his readings and he did not like that AT ALL. Also, publicly humiliated me and some other students to the point where one dropped out of college.
If you're interested in Marxist ideologies, power structures, paintings, etc., take Harrison because that is ALL that is covered in the course. If you're taking the class for credit only, don't take Harrison. There was an average of 8 pages of writing and 60 pages of reading per week; be prepared to be miserable.
His moodle is so bad. The content covered in class is interesting and it's great to improve writing quality, but it is so hard to navigate to the point that I would never recommend any of his classes.
It's been months since I took his class and I still get physically angry when I think of this man. Do not take this class.
Just an unreasonable amount of homework, absolutely ridiculous. I think I spent more time on this class than my other two science classes combined.
Expects you to instantly have everything memorized weeks prior. Only 1/3 of what he writes is actually important to the assignments, the rest is filler. Grades on your opinion and whether he agrees. Stereotypical, but worse, racist boomer and add Marxist. And upwards of 17 pages of writing every week, outside of essays. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Professor Harrison runs a rigorous class, but if you engage with the material and utilize resources like the textbook and study tools like unstuck ai, you can excel. Stay on top of the heavy workload, attend class, and be prepared to dive deep into the topics.
Pros: Loads of office hours and is nicer one-on-one than in class. Gives lots of feedback on assignments even though it's in his own weird code. Cons: Does not promote critical thinking (though thinks/claims he does), egotistical, condescending, often publicly humiliates students, uses shame-based "motivation" tactics that do not promote learning.
If you have responsibilities, a job, children, do not take this course. If this was my only class I would still be stressed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Around 7-10 pages of writing weekly and a stupid amount of reading on top. Despite this, the class will teach you a lot.
He is extremely strict and egotistical, and seems to think that all of his students are taking his, and only his class. He sends out multiple messages a day creating new forums for *required* discussion of the readings. He assigns a ton of homework every single class, and expects everyone to be an expert on the material within the first week.
Dr. Harrison is a decent human being. That's all the positivity I have for him. He thinks his class is your only class so good luck keeping up with the workload, on top of his already weird and subjective grading methods. The way he send emails also makes me unusually angry like he sends so many and they're always huge paragraphs.
This man makes me physically angry. He publicly humiliates students often. He assigns insane amounts of work for an entry-level writing class. There are multiple weekly readings, and he is picky about everything. I will say a lot of what we read is interesting, but the workload is EXTREMELY HEAVY. Be ready to eat, sleep, and breathe this class.
Lectures heavily, high expectations, your phone will be spammed w/emails of group discussions, personally would never take again, politic/gender/culture/racial reading, for every class you miss, you lose grade points. "If you miss more than 5 classes you WILL fail", don't recommend
I don't understand how using public humiliation motivates or empowers students.
Dr. Harrison genuinely does care a lot about his students and what they gain from this course. That being said, he is a very tough grader, assigns LOTS of readings and work with little time to do them, and is VERY passive aggressive. If you take this class, you will definitely learn a lot, but you will have to put in a lot of time and effort.
Jeff is an awesome professor. I was initially super intimidated to take his class ( Bob Dylan; American Poet ENG 270 ) because of some of his reviews on here. He creates a comfortable classroom environment and the dude just genuinely loves Bob Dylan. He works with you and is super understanding of students with medical conditions.
Class: This class is VERY workload heavy, be prepared have anxiety over your grade, but some text were insightful and enjoyable. Teacher: This will be your best and worst teacher at the same time, He loves to help but can get aggressive at times. Also if you are not a strong writer, you WILL suffer. Take his class ONLY if you love writing.
