Easy class, easy lectures, easy material. Nice guy who likes to go on some pretty odd tangents. The tests were a little weird though, and there were only two of them, which sucked. But overall a nice, easy GUR
Really helpful professor with a lot of knowledge on the subject. Encourages students to ask question during lecture. Has powerpoint lectures so you don't get bored. The tests are easy, but confusing. Just do all the problems he tells you to and get an A
I HATED chemistry in high school! That all changed this year! I love Professor Hurlbut! He's funny and tells interesting stories. Study hard and know the material from labs, lectures, and text and you will do great!
the class was relatively easy, it was like a review of high school chem. Hurlbut was nice enough, and knew what he was talking about, he could answer questions well. the lectures were boring at times, do not take this class at 8 like i did.just do the practice problems, and it'll go fine.
He tells really dumb but interseting stories. I hated chem in high school and was afraid to take it again. Hurlbut made me enjoy it and not be so afraid.
Much to memorize and learn, but focus on studying and you will do well. Hurlbut is very funny and interesting. Chem from him never left me asleep during lecture. Explains concepts and terms well and is willing to give extra help during some class time, mainly office hours. Wished he taught Chem 122.
Hurlbut has the best stories! He is willing to take time to answer individual q's during lecture. He relates chemistry to real life. The online homework is easy if you use your notes and the textbook and his tests are straight forward.
Funny! This guy made me laugh, he told great stories that made chem interesting. Sometimes I felt it wasn't as easy to ask questions in class, but he had a lot of office time and he would totally work with you there. He is a great teacher and made the beginning of the college chem experience fun.
His class was ok. He spent way too much time telling stories and not enough time on teaching. I learned by reading the book. all his test are multiple choice which sucks because then you don't get partial points like professor weyh. I will look into having professor Weyh from now on. He's awesome.
Get ready for some really nerdy stories, this guy makes a night of Doungens and Drangons look really cool. He was a good teacher and did his job, however he will not give + or - on final grades. This might be good or bad, for me i was getting a B+ and ended up getting a B
Prof. Hurlbut will use classtime to tell stupid stories about all the times he nearly died doing random chem experiments. His tests include info from his stories too! He doesn't answer student questions directly and seems generally disorganized and rather incompetent.
Not the greatest teacher but he definately has a lot of real world experience and knows what he is talking about. He has hilarious stories for almost every chemical. I would definately recommend him, his tests aren't too bad and he is a great guy.
A pretty easy intro Chem class. His tests are fair and not too tough. He's a nice guy and he tells some crazy and funny stories. Just try to get him at a time other than 8am. It's killer.
Mr. Hurlbut was an awesome chemistry teacher. I was scared to take Chem, but he made the class really interesting and funny with all of his funny chemistry experiences. He's definitely a character and I would definitely recommend him. Wish he did the whole series.
This class was hard, and I spent most of my time in the tutorial center, trying to learn the material.
Hurlbut is super nice and funny and he knows his stuff. He tends to get a little off track but it's always interesting. Sometimes he'll go through vital info really fast, but just use his lectures, powerpoints and the book and chemistry is definitely tolerable. Tests and grading in general is fair.
this guy is the ~bomb~ he has the best stories;) go to his office hours if you want free answers2 online homeworketc.. youll get an a by always attending class + reading the whole book+working out problems from memory.
Hurlbut told some pretty fun and entertaining stories, which were interesting and made class bearable at 8am. However, I struggled with the tests in his class, even though the material seemed easy, and I am (well, was) a 4.0 student.
I loved his class! While the class may not be easy it is when you consider that it is chemistry. He took all of the chem jargon and made it into English for us. He says "moleclear" for "molecular", but it's kind of amusing and he's got some great stories.
Very funny guy, keeps class interestng. tests are not easy, but he's approachable for help. great prof.
He made me love Chemistry, what can I say? He knows what he's talking about and is very clear if you ask him questions, which I did every day. He's always willing to help out with hw problems and even though I got a C on the first test, it was my own fault, the test was easy. Make sure to study lect
Interesting lecturer and very willing to help if asked. Funny storyteller!
Really hard tests, but he's fair and knows his stuff. Tells great stories! In labs he's great at helping you understand everything. Make sure you check your spelling on tests, he'll mark you down for errors. Be prepared to listen to him tell you how you'll die from everything every day because apparently everything is "extremely toxic."
He's a good lecturer, but his tests arn't as easy as they seem. He is very knowledgable, and has worked with the FDA for quite awhile. He's not afraid to tell you what foods you are eating that will kill you, either. If you love meat and use tylenol, avoid his class!
Hurltbut is awesome. He's nice, funny, but he expects you to do your work. Also, I loved the textbook because it was concise.
very smart and knowledgable. awesome guy. he always puts humor in his lectures and has a ton of stories. very helpful and enthusiastic in labs. would reccomend to anyone
Pretty easy class and hurlbut is funny.Tests come from notes, the reading isn't essential and the final was hard(and cumalative) so make sure he reviews(not just say he will like he did with my class)and understand the concepts really well. Second test had some unexpected history questions. Labs arent graded so it is 100% if you complete them.
Not as great as I expected. He's a funny guy, but not as helpful as he seems. He has a lot of situtations where it's a 'my way or the highway' grading system so watch out. Tests really are a lot harder than they seem so make sure you study hard- they sometimes include a question from one of his stories/random facts. Not as great as he sounds.
Don't know what happened with our class. His lectures are interesting and thourough but our class is doing poorly as a whole. Nice guy!
He is a really nice guy and great teacher. He is very enthusiastic and helpful when you need it. Tests are hard, so study. You need to memorize a lot of stuff for this class. You don't always have to go to class because the notes are online but it really helps if you do because he explains everything.
Lectures are not that interesting, but he explains stuff well. Attendance is not taken so if you learn well from powerpoints and the text, there is no reason to go to class. Tests are hard, but every thing is on the power point.
Tip #1: Go over the PPT notes RIGHT AFTER each lecture... don't wait. If the notes are unclear, read the book. It does NOT take that long. Tip #2: start making notecards RIGHT AFTER each lecture, put em in ya pockets & chew on em as you take a walk. Start memorizing early so you won't overwhelm yourself right before the tests (yes they are hard).
AWESOME Prof! Hurlbut was nice, understanding, very clear, and an incredibly nice grader. Lots of curving. Almost all info was on Powerpoint slides, so tests were pretty easy. Class was somewhat boring, but okay. Heard that Chem 121 was a lot harder, but 101 is great.
If you have trouble with chemistry at all this is not the professor for you. He is very short with people when answering questions one on one. My high school teacher did a better job of teaching the same material. He doesn't go out of the way to explain one thing different ways, so you understand it better.
He was such a fun prof - I was so nervous about taking Chem in college, but he made it so fun with all his stories and examples. I really enjoyed taking his 100 class so I took him for 101 too. It wasn't the easiest course, and there is a lot that you are expected to do on your own, but at least going to class isn't a waste of time.
Hurlbut is one of the nicest guys ever. He has all these crazy stories, and he's lived quite a life. His lectures are kind of bland and he doesn't go in depth with any of the material, so if you don't understand it right off the bat, then good luck. If you're good at chemistry, definitely take his class. Otherwise find a prof that goes in depth mor
He has great stories and is enthusiastic about chemistry (which makes it less boring). Go to all the lectures and it's pretty simple. He's a good chemistry teacher.
Hurlbut is an awesome professor. I was reluctant on taking Chem but he just made it really easy and fun. His stories are great and keep you awake in class. Read the book and do the practice problems if you want a good grade in his class. If you don't understand the material go to his office hours for help. I recommend taking a class from him.
He is funny and does a good job of keeping class interesting, in part due to his related tangent stories. This class was not very difficult, and adequately explained. The material is quit elementary. The tests are generally easier than the online assignments and are weighted heavily. Good teacher for this class.
Great teacher makes class really interesting
Hurlbut is really a good Professor. Good clear lectures, despite being kind of slow sometimes. Really really tries to help and give a good review before exams (which can be challenging), and he goes at a very good pace. Plus, he tells some great stories which helps make class relaxing, and he's down to earth.
I lived for those stories. Died during lecture. Read the book.
Challenging class for me. His tests are almost entirely multiple choice. Lectures can be dull, occasionally broken up by a story or two. His powerpoint slides are great, good study guides and comprehensible. Overall good prof.
This dude didn't put forth as much effort as he should have. But then again, neither did I. Personally, his teaching style didn't do it for me. Some of his test questions were ambiguous to a pathetic extent. I don't think he wanted his students to do well. I think he was about as excited about teaching 121 as I was about taking it.
So chem tests that are all multiple choice are tricky no matter what teacher gives them. He's a really nice guy though. Sometimes it seemed like he had way too much time for the material, so he told a lot of stories. He's clear about what to study but be prepared for tricky tests. I learned a lot that was not reflected by my grade.
Had this teacher for 121. I really like his stories, it makes the lecture material seem more applicable to life. Tests were hard, but expect that from any chemistry class. Make sure you read through the tests questions carefully, and the online hw. I didn't do as well because of silly mistakes .
Good teacher, knows his stuff, always willing to help, does go on relevant tangents. Very hard tests, doesn't really curve.
Horrible professor?.but can you even call him a professor since he doesn?t teach!!! I didn?t sign up for this course for daily stories on his life as a chemist. When he did decide to go over material he just clicked through useless PowerPoint examples. I learned all the material from the book.
HIS TESTS ARE TERRIBLE! Questions are tricky and set up for failure! He is also very mean and gives dirty looks when anyone shows up for office hours. TAKE FROM DIFFERENT PROFESSOR!!!!!!!BEWARE!!!!!!
I got an A in 121. This class was hard though. I felt i understood the material. But yet still got C's on the test.. and C in the class. If you have the option to take it with someone else. Do it.
Did not find this professor to be very helpful. Taking this class hurt my overall GPA. Would not recommend this professor for CHEM 122.
Hurlbut is a good professor, but his tests are very challenging. He expects you to memorize formulas that other professors don't.To do good READ THE BOOK, you don't need to go to class, but he tells great stories. He is more than willing to help with any questions people have over the material. Try Mark Peyron if you want an easier class
Chem 122 is the hardest of the general chem series. Hurlbut expects you to memorize many formulas that other teachers don't. He does a good job of going over the material but the tests are difficult.
Hurlbut is a great teacher and his experience in the industry comes out in lecture. The tests are difficult though, which, for the most part are not qualitative, but multiple choice. You will learn a lot but it will be difficult to get a good grade.
Tests are difficult and he will expect you to memorize a number of formulas however he makes time to answer any question you might have, explains tricky concepts behind labs, and he tells some really interesting stories. Overall he is a good professor with a great understanding of chemistry.
Hurlbut is an idiot. He is useless and teaches nothing, just tells these ridiculous stories that are TOTALLY off topic. The text is your only teacher. Then, he basically does the lab/calculations for you just so he can leave early. Don't think the class is easy though, his tests are nitpicky as hell and difficult. Take ANYONE else if possible.
Great teacher, explains the concepts very well. answers all questions and tells funny stories inbetween. be prepared to supplement lectures with text book practice questions. tests are very managable..he basically tells you what type of questions to expect.
This is a hard professor to rate. Honestly, you could never come to class except to take the tests, so long as you read the text and go over his lecture notes online. He doesn't really do anything to distill the information and facilitate easier learning. Yet, he makes coming to class enjoyable and doesn't impose unfair expectations.
I think I liked Hurlbut. The tests prior to the final were tricky, but definitely not impossible. The final was relatively easy. I had a B-/C+ in the class before the final and ended up with a B. He's not that bad, he's funny, loved chemistry, but doesn't go into much detail about the concepts.
His test's are the hardest test;s I have ever taken. Although he is a very nice teacher and quite funny, I would recommend not taking this class from him. He is very conceptual and wants you to memorize everything. You get no notes for tests and all about 30 questions are squashed into 1 page.
Tells way too many stories... They are fun to listen to, but he needs to spend that time doing examples and such. I was shocked that we made it through everything. If you are okay with only hearing something once and getting it then you'll be fine. If not, make sure you check your notes. He says things only once and you need to know it.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Did not lecture, instead just told stories about working at the FDA. He didn't clearly explain much, and likes to make things tough. He also likes to make it sound like he is helpful, but he isn't. I had to go to the tutoring center every week, and taught myself out of the textbook.
He's very friendly and really wants you to understand the material.
He is so friendly and funny. Whenever he could tell that the class was fading out then he would tell a story about some disaster with Chemistry. He went over the material over and over, so there's no way you could miss a beat. If you go to his lectures and care then you will do well.
Told lots of fun stories. Was very thorough in his explanations. If you ask questions, he will be more than happy to answer them and it will benefit you on the online HW and tests. A very passionate teacher who gives reasonable tests. Make sure you do practice problems and that you understand the concepts, and you will rock the tests.
I really like professor Hurlbut. some people think his stories are pointless, but i really enjoy them and sometimes they are practical. he makes lectures really easy with powerpoints and he goes over a ton of examples prior to the test. the tests are clear and straight forward. overall i really enjoyed him as a teacher!
Horrible! His stories are useless and all he seems to do is tell stories making it very hard to pay attention in class. Plus in the real lab he is a horrible grader on one of the partner labs I got a 9 out of 15 on my lab while my partner got a 14 out of 15, and we had the exact same thing written on our papers word for word! Avoid like the plague!
I dont understand why some people are giving Hurlbut bad reviews. Great teacher, lots of life & chemistry experience. Get him in lab, extremely helpful. Know his slides & equations & you'll be fine on the tests. Use the textbook for the online hw though. Peyron is also a great chem prof, but Hurlbut's test are a lot easier. I'd recommend Hurlbut
His stories were great, but I thought his teaching was haphazard, and the way he grades tests is strange. He uses almost all multiple choice, barely any partial credit. He's on the conceptual side. Not very clear about how to solve problems. He uses different methods than the book, even though the online hw is based on the book, causing confusion.
As was previously mentioned, he does not do things the way the book does. I lost probably 5% of my grade on my last test for using the correct formulas provided in past classes and the book. He is funny as hell, and quite nice. He is always avaliable to help His tests are too long for the time period given. He does grade on a curve, SOMETIMES. I ha
He is awesome! I love his stories. When the stories are related to the material, it helps me remember! He is also very helpful in labs, which makes my life so much easier. A funny chemistry teacher. Cannot ask for more.
I LOVE HURLBUT. He's hilarious and makes coming to class enjoyable. His tests are fair and he tells lots of funny stories.
Professor Hurlbut was an excellent teacher. Very helpful if you can get him for the lab, he helps you a lot with any and all questions you have. Excellent in class, will always answer any questions in class or through email. Tests are very hard, be prepared to study a LOT.
Impossible to pass without being extremely good at deciphering awkward paraphrasing and studying almost entirely from the textbook. Most of the class is stories and no teaching. Doesn't teach how to solve equations and gives unrealistically difficult, multiple-choice tests. Sporadic grading as well. Do not take a class with him.
This class was extremely challenging. I came into this class needing it for an engineering pre rec. I am a successful math student and did nothing but struggle with this class on the tests. Hurlbut asks way too much of his students and dose not leave enough time for exams. (exam are very difficult) Dont take 121 from him.
Lectures are completely useless to attend, I learned everything from Sapling and the text. All he does in class is tell stories that do not help at all. Not an easy professor if you arent a wiz at chem.
I think he is an awesome teacher! His tests are a lot easier than my chemistry tests in high school were. His lectures are good and he is very amusing. The lectures don't help a lot on the homework though.
He is awesome! so dorky and funny. I love chemistry now. I thought I was horrible at science but taking this class made me almost kind of want to major in chemistry. He will tell you if you need to know certain things for the tests. and he is a genius. he will spout off facts about chemistry from memory. his stories are so cool too!
Hurlbut, he loves if you go to his office hours. I took this series as a freshmen ( 122 winter/ 123 spring of 2010). Do your HW, go to class, and study. You wont get less than a B if your decent at chemistry. Go to the tutoring center if you need help with the HW.
He is an okay teacher. His tests are ridiculously hard and are nothing like the homework. Attending the class doesn't make a difference. The final contains questions from the lab. Take him if you don't have any other choice, but avoid if you are not from Chemistry major.
This guy makes you actually interested in Chemistry. His stories may seem pointless but to me they were entertaining and made me a lot more interested in the subject.
Hurlbut is perhaps the best professor for lectures because he's an awesome guy to listen to and breaks up boring lectures with funny stories. However, the tests, labs and homework in the class were so abominably hard that I nearly failed 121. Expect easily up to 15-20+ hours of outside work every week if you want to do great in the class.
LOVE Hurlbut! He taught chem so straight-forwardly that I was able to understand I previously had not. Only tells you the things you need to know and makes all procedures clear and concise. I would recommend him to anyone for gen chem.
Helps you out a lot with the labs. Fair grader. Very clear about what you need to know for the tests. Uses quizzes to get you studying (they are worth little of your grade but are a sneek-peek to the tests. Tells a lot of amazing stories from his life that make chemistry relate-able. Highly recommend.
The professor was very educated in the subject but dealing with freshman he didn't really have a hold of the class, making it really hard for others to concentrate. The class was relatively hard, but he helped a lot with labs. The biggy was memorizing all the formulas for the tests.
Professor Hurlbut is a very good lecturer, he has a lot of interesting stories pertaining to the subject matter, he tells you interesting things about all the chemicals and elements he uses in class, and he's very friendly and helpful. I was not excited to take this class at all, but I look forward to going to class and I enjoy the class a lot.
I liked this prof. The subject was, in my opinion, the hardest of the gen chem series. But Hurlbut did a good job, his lectures could get a little boring but he always told some interesting chemistry stories. Just go to class, pay attention, take notes, study, do the Sapling, and you'll do fine. I didn't read much of the text but it can be helpful.
