An easy course...but it's isn't U.S.history-it's lanigan's opinions on History
No Comments
I hated History until I took this class with Lanigan, he is passionate about it.
Great history teacher. Teaches why things happened.
Best History teacher ever. Extremely interesting lectures, I actually looked forward to going to class! Plus I learned alot, which is quite a comliment from someone who hated history up til now. To sum it up Lanigan ROCKS!
Easy teacher, one mid term one final and thats it really. His lectures are good enough to make you come to class really. He gives his opinions on topics and you might want to write those down because that is what you are tested on.
great teacher
Hated History until I took his class. I enjoy the lectures and he makes it worth going to class for.
History for idiots: and you still will learn something (even if it is his own opinions). Interesting how economics finds it's way into every subject. So easy it is scary!!!
Awesome teacher! Funny and keeps class interesting however Do Not Buy The Book! You will not need it. Everything you need to know he will tell you in class.
Mr Lanigan is fun and interesting. He does speak his opinions, and he doesn't care if someone is bothered by that. He is a great teacher.
Lanigan's U.S. History classes are the easiest I've ever taken! He also makes his subject extremely interesting.
Very Easy! Only grades are midterm and final. Does not take attendence, but lectures are so good, you want to go! Dont buy the book, you wont ever use it! Great Teacher! Makes history about learning and understanding not just studying.
I love history anyways, but he makes it even more interesting and aplicable. He is passionate about history and that really makes the class a lot more enjoyable. He also requires little to no homework outside of the two exams. Best teacher ever.
I WAS one of those people who say,"Why do we need to know about history? That is in the past!"Until now.Lanigan has a great way to explain just that.He doesn't have to go into much detail to get the point across either.Waste of money if you b
Lanigan has awesome lectures that keep you rolling and interested in history. I wish all professors were like him. He's real and down to earth with a no BS attitude!
yes, you should take this class! this guy can teach some history. he's lively and into the subject.
One of the best lecturers at BRCC. His classes are a piece of cake, as long as you show up and take good notes. You don't even need the book. He IS the book.
Great teacher, strongly recommend, Only 2 graded assignments midterm and final and he gives the questions that will be asked. no reason not to get an A

Exciting
Take his class if you can!! Everyone loves this guy!! :)
This class is so easy...YOU NEVER HAVE TO GO...go to the review right before the test and then the test and thast all you need to do...dont need to read, or attend class, this was so easy...an A is impossible not to get...bleieve me take this class.
Lanigan is a wonderful teacher. All you have to do is go to class or at least the review before the midterm and final. He provides outlines for the final essays in class and tells you the essay questions ahead of time. A monkey could get an A in this class
He rocks! Take his class!
Totally hot and really nice. He is a great teacher and is really funny.
This guy is awesome. By far the best history teacher I've ever had. He's funny and interesting. If nothing else, you'll learn that cuban cigars are better than sex.
Most awesome teacher I've ever had. I loved him.
very good teacher. fun and intresting to listen too. Make's History one big fun storybook....if you take history take this guy.
i had him online, extremely easy class. only assignment was two study questions every two weeks, midterm and final. final was an easy essay. seems like a very helpful and cool, laidback kinda guy. definitely take him instead of the other his profs. i got an A in his online class and didn't even read the textbook. he gives good online notes.
Really unhelpful. Would not recommend this teacher to anyone. Gives a really bad last exam essay and expects it to be perfect. Two paragraphs in the whole book on the subject and he expects us to do well. Really not a good teacher at all.
He was great. He made taking history painless. Very knowledgeable on the subject and makes it fun and interesting for his students. And his tests are quite easy. But,take good notes.
Bad midterm, only assigns 2 questions every 2 weeks and expects us to pass the midterm with good grades? Final wasn't good either, only 2 small paragraphs of info, Homework assignments weren't bad, but homework didn't count much towards final grade.
What a great teacher this guy is. I looked forward to this class every friday and it was the perfect way to end the school week. Great jokes and he gets so excited about teaching us the material. TAKE GOOD NOTES and PAY ATTTENTION!!!
i love lannigan! he makes the class interesting and knows what he is talking about. he only gives 3 tests and no other grades! its great !
Great teacher, tells lots of jokes but makes history more fun also and easier to learn
Very relaxed atmosphere...good all around teacher!
most BRCC professors teach like we're in elementary school, but Lanigan is the best professor I've had in BRCC. he doesn't care about attendance, and he goes over every test (just 3 in one semester). there's no way you can fail. he doesn't care about anything!
He's a great guy. He laughs at his own stupid remarks that aren't even funny! Go To Class and Listen to this dude talk, then take 3 short tests. Listen to his opinions and you'll do great!
He's hilarious. I like listening to his opinions. And he does know what he's talking about.
lanigan is a GREAT professor. he is extremely funny, and incredibly well read. Ive taken 2 of his classes and have looked forward to every friday morning. bottom line, Lanigan makes learning history fun.
Lanigan is absolutely one of the best teachers at Blue Ridge! I love history, but even if you don't, you will in his class. He tells you juicy details about the famous people in history that will make you laugh. He's cool.Go to every single class, and take excellent detailed notes and study well.Tests can be tricky-know the material & you'll ace it.
Good teacher. Doesn't take attendance, so the only day that you really have to be in class is test day and the class before test day. There are three exams, and he goes over everything that will be on them the class before the test. He is willing help you out when you need it.
I took this class online but regret it after reading all the great reviews on him. Wish I had taken the campus class. The online class consists of reading the chapters and then taking biweekly quizes which were open book.
Hilarious teacher, really knowledgeable in his field. Tests are not too bad, and only 3 for this semester. Excellent stories.
I took this class online and although I felt it was difficult at times, he curved grades to the point I easilly got an A
Mr. Lanigan is an awesome teacher! He is very funny and his class is super easy. Anyone who fails his class must be retarded
Best History prof I've ever had. He really loves History and you can tell! He's really funny and he presents the topics in a funny way, but you remember the material! He also shows some good movies (Glory was a good one!) I would rec. to read the text, too. SHOW UP AND TAKE EXCELLENT NOTES! Tests aren't too hard. NO PAPERS! I really like him!
I love Mr. Lanigan! He is so knowledgeable and yet also very patient with each student. You won't do well in his class if you don't show up.
He is absolutely hilarious! By far my favorite teacher, and I have already recommended him to so many people. Show up as much as possible and take notes, you will get at least a B. Easy to comprehend and fun to learn from! Take him for both History classes if possible!
Best teacher ever. I took HIS 121 and 122 with him. Zero homework the whole semester. The whole grade comes down to 3 tests though(30%, 30%, 40%) so should probably avoid if you're a bad test taker. But he's a great teacher and does a great review. Show up to class and definitely don't miss the review and you'll do well.
Excellant teacher!
Best teacher i've ever had. Ignore the bad reports about essays because he doesnt do that anymore. Makes lots of jokes, knows more about history than any teacher i've had, attendance isnt mandatory but i would reccomend going. Tests are hard but he helps you out. I've hated history my whole life but his class is by far the most interesting i've had
Great teacher. Very funny and interesting. Does not take attendance and does not assign homework. Take good notes and you will do fine on his tests. One of the best lecture classes I've had.
I am very surprised you can get this level of quality in a community college. Your getting a value about four times your money spent with his lectures. He is a fine individual. I would vote for him for Congress or President but he would have to start wearing a necktie.
As a History Major, Lanigan type of professor I expect to be learning from after I transfer. He is an absolutely phenomenal professor. Very funny and very interesting. He is an Economics major so he has a very economical way of looking at history. Makes for a couple of HILARIOUS lectures. HIGHLY recommend.
This guy definatley loves his job, but the whole class is a lecture, it gets boring after the first 30 minutes. there are no handouts and its hard to take notes because of that. he does go over what is going to be on the test.. but overall it is not helpful
LOVED Lanigan! He's funny, smart, and genuinely loves what he does. I took his class twice, and I wish I could take it a million more times! TAKE HIS CLASS!
Very funny, smart, and explains things. Asks if we have questions and answers them.
just take notes and show up to class but attendence is not mandotary. Dont buy the book u will hardly touch it. Only 3 tests and no essays throughout the whole semester.
No homework!!! Just tests. Make sure to take good notes. Doesn't take attendance.
Great teacher. Loves his field and makes history interesting! Wish he taught more classes. Go to class, take good notes and you'll be fine for the exams! It's helpful to read ahead before class so you can participate in the discussion and ask questions.
Grades consist of three exams that aren't just fact regurgitation. Encourages critical thinking in his students. He's very funny and prone to telling (and re-telling) stories in his lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he gives opinions during lecture that will show up on exams. Would take another class of his.
Very few assignments which you get full credit for just doing with no feedback, no teaching, i basically paid tuition money to read the text book and take the final. Had some difficulties with the midterm right before spring break because of a big snow storm and he was VERY unaccommodating and I had to really fight him to get any kind of help.
Mr. Lanigan's HIS122 summer online class was heavy in reading and required a lot of discipline to complete on time. However, the assignments weren't difficult, just time consuming. There weren't a lot of graded assignments, one midterm, weekly discussion questions and a final essay. Not a hard class as long as you put forth a little effort.
Attendance isn't mandatory. I only went to class about half of the time and still did well. All I had to do was re-read my APUSH notes from high school and read the textbook. He's prone to going off on tangents during lectures, but other than that I have no complaints. Would take again.
Lecteur based but amazing teacher who excels at getting his point across and helping students to understand his lessons.
Professor Lanigan knows how to teach history and he doesn't make the class boring. The only thing is your grade consists of three tests; this is a lecture-based class. He gives a thorough review before each test. It's kind of hard to tell where he pulls from because the info. isn't directly shown in the notes, nor the book, but tests aren't hard.
Okay so Lanigan is a really cool dude. I hold a lot of respect for him but if you suck at history (like I do) you might want to reconsider this class. There's only 3 tests including the final and his reviews are worthless. I studied really really hard based off of his reviews and it didn't do me any good on the test, and I'm a good test taker.
One of the best classes/ teachers I've ever had, and as far as grades go, theres only 3 tests. Just come to class, listen to what he says and write some of it down and its the easiest A you will get. Plus he's hilarious so his lectures are actually fun to sit in on.
Overqualified for Blue Ridge Community College
Good guy, enthusiastic about history, which rubs off
All you have to do is show up and listen. That's it. He lectures for the entirety of the class period and assigns no assignments other than three tests. Each test was only 25 multiple choice questions and he basically explained every question beforehand.
One of the laziest professors I've ever had. He only grades out of 3 test's so if your not a good test taker, there's not any other grades to pull your grade's up. He only show's up, talks, and leave's. He gives no note's out, not even a powerpoint or line out so you have to take your own note's from he say's.
Lectures every class. Our class is huge so, it makes it didfficult for all of us. But... He is a great teacher. Knows what he is talking about. If you skip and think you'll pass.. Think again. All of his test questions are based on the lecture.
He is a great professor. Very easy lectures, but you need to come to class everyday. All his test questions are based on the lectures. Also a big class, but worth it. You only take 3 tests one of them is the final.
Took online, minimal work which includes a reading assignment of 2 chapters every 2 weeks, with answers to 2 questions pertaining to the topic to be emailed to him by the end of the 2 weeks. 1 Midterm, 1 final. Grades on a curve, REALLY GOOD GUY!!!
Lanigan is an amazing professor. He's straight up and makes lectures interesting. He is super into the curriculum. He does awesome review sessions before tests as well which is always super helpful.
Gives grades ONLY for tests. If you get a bad grade on one test youll never get the chance to get a better grade since you have to get a perfect score on all the others to pass. Lectures are all over the place. Doesnt give tests back to review because no one learns from review.
Easy class. He gives no feed back. With his exam he didn't give specific length of the essay, makes it had to know what he expects. Has lots of reading. Veryyy little work and gave some grades without even doing the work.
I took this class online and it was super easy. No more than 4 study questions @ the end of each week, no discussion boards, proctored midterm that is doable as long as you study.
All you do is listen to the lectures, and if you pay attention, you don't need to read the textbook to pass the exams. The only grade you have is based off three exams including the final.
Only three tests. He get so sidetracked that you dont know what to take notes on. Consistently gives inaccurate and unhelpful review before his tests. Only C of my college career.
Loved Professor Lanigan and loved his class. Your entire grade is based off of three tests, which can be a little intimidating, but his class is worth it. He also grades on a curve so thats nice. He was always willing to meet with me to go over exams and is an all around nice guy. If you go to class and read the book, youll do fine.
I took history 111 and 112 with Lanigan and I personally loved it. Only 3 grades which are tests but if you read and take good notes you'll do alright. eh has a review right before tests that and he literally tells you what to study. attendance isn't mandatory but if you do miss a class you're missing a ton of information
Your entire grade consist of 3 tests only. The first 2 tests are worth 30% and the final one is worth 40%. Attendance is completely optional however if you didn't read the chapter for the week, your time is better spent catching up on that reading because you will be completely lost during the lecture. If you keep up with the readings youll be fine
Mr. Lanigans online class was A CAKEWALK. He only gave 1 assignment to do EVERY 2 WEEKS, which consisted of 2-3 chapters to read, and 2/3 short short essay questions (very easy A's). The midterm was tough with 6 options for each question, but it was curved for my class (37% of final grade). The final was an essay, which I got a 97 on. VERY EASY!!!!
Instructions for the assignments were misleading and poorly written, and there was no feedback on any of the work. Each time I had questions, he took days to respond (something that is not acceptable in an accelerated course), and then his tone was abrupt. He was not creative or engaged. In future, I will avoid his classes.
I took a 5 week session to get my last history credit out of the way. This is one of the easiest classes Ive ever taken. There were only 3 sets of 2-3 short answer questions for weekly assignments and both the midterm and final were essays with no length requirement. He grades FAST but does not give feedback. Read and do the papers, youll pass.
Didnt really teach pretty much just gave us pages to read and wasnt very clear on what he wanted from the writing
Would 100% take this class again. Absolutely take Professor Lanigan. Easiest class of my college career. Roughly 7 EASY assignments for the entire semester. No class meetings, and he is so understanding and will let you make up anything. Cannot recommend enough.
This was asynchronous, and there was no actual teaching involved. There were only two posted lectures for the entire semester, and otherwise, we just read the textbook and answered short answer questions every other week. There were two tests that were heavily weighted. It was an easy class, but it was obvious he didn't put any effort into it.
If you want an easy A, take his online classes. Very heavy on the textbook reading but the tests and quizzes were ridiculously easy and straightforward. Hard to get ahold of him though. The lectures we were given were amazing but pretty useless for the course material.
Professor Lanigan has terrific lectures; you can tell he cares deeply for history. He manages to grab your attention when talking about history. Beware, don't zone out because you'll miss important information.
He is the easiest teacher you'll ever take and I mean that. You have no required attendance or no homework. All you have to do is show up for test day and that is it. He will let you know the week before the test and tell you exactly what the study for The class is a easy A.
I absolutely adore Professor Lanagan. He is very understanding if you have legitimate reasoning for missing an exam. I took two semesters with him, US history 1 and 2. I really loved his perspective and his knowledge about the topics. I personally am not a good test taker so that was my struggle, but I throughly enjoyed his lectures.
Assignments were only due every two weeks, with the exams making up the majority of your grade. If you are a slow reader, the material can be super difficult and time consuming to get through. Exams are open book and open note, which helps since the information is a lot to take in. Didn't have much interaction with him because class was online.
Attendance isnt mandatory, but show up because he teaches straight from the textbook, I never had to read it. Theres only 3 exams, the third being cumulative. THESE ARE THE ONLY GRADES. He goes over test and gives you a list of what to study. Lectures arent powerpoint based, he talks at you. He gets into the personalities of historians, I love it.
Lanigan is a great teacher, but to be honest I don't know how his grading scale still stands. The entire course grade is based on 3 exams: Exam 1=30%, Exam 2=30%, Final=40%. Does not offer extra credit. Entire class averages a 60-65% and he has to curve it at least 10% every exam because his tests are so random and don't align w lectures or book.
I get that five-week classes are going to be hard. However, they are made worse when your professor only gives you three-chapter readings and maybe three questions to answer a week and then test on things that you had to really pay attention to in order to get right. 10/10 would not recommend taking him.
Very difficult. Honestly had no idea what was going on half of the time. He only gives 3 grades which are exams but never goes over what you missed. When you go to the class review, he just tells you what you should be "studying" but provides nothing to study. Quite honestly rambles and does not stick to History. Most of my peers also struggled.
