His test questions are very confusing. Most of the material on the study guide is not on the test.

He has a great sense of sarcastic humor.
Really tough grader but made the lectures really interesting. Too bad most of his lecture material wasn't on the tests; it was all obscure parts of the reading assignments. But he sure is cute!
too much reading homework and very boring lectures. this is the class i always fall asleep in. his writing is bad too.

this teacher is the worst teacher i EVER had. he would talk about horse waste for a whole two weeks and there would be only one question about it on the test. he isnt cute either, i dont know why SOMEONE said he was cute.
very hard teacher homework wise but he gives u the answer to the test so it average things out
prob one of the worst teachers i've ever had, so boring hate that class!!
His lectures are very unrelated to the test and his sense of humor is hard to get. One day in his class he was kinda cute, when he was shaved and kempt, but he isn't hot. If you can take another teacher, I'd recommend it, otherwise you'll survive...
cynical in class, but if you go see him in person he is really helpful and can give great pointers for the test.
A very challenging teacher. A lot of readings and homework. His multiple choices tests are very confusing but be sure do good on your essay question. You should read all the readings, do all of the homework, and understand the concepts very clearly.
He does NOT know how to lecture. HIs final was compleatly diffrent than the other tests. Doesnt use a text book, just one on the enviroment and the effects on history. Just confusing, wouldnt recomend to anyone!
He's handsome, witty and very knowledgeable in his field. His lectures are interesting, engaging and informative. Don't be lazy, contribute and you will benefit. Whole learning method, (chain-effect on events) makes his test a breeze. Plan to listen/study
He's tall, dark, and handsome. =P hehe but aside from his rugged looks, he's a boring teacher. Caught myself sleeping a couple times. His lectures are non-relevant to the materials to be covered on tests. He also assigns a lot of reading.
His looks kept me coming to class-but it paid off-I got an A. I took him 2 years ago, so maybe he has changed things, but I found the class pretty straightforward. Read, take notes, and you'll be fine.
this is the worst class i've ever taken. I'd aviod him at all costs!
Class was pretty straight foward. Pay attention & study and you'll be good.
Not that bad of a teacher, seems knowledgeable, kind of cute. Class gets kinda boring after a while, and there wasnt much interaction between students/teacher. Most of the reading was boring.
not bad for a required class. his tests are hard-essay- but if you study and go to class, you should do ok. he says he offers no extra credit, but he does. has a pantera flag in his office! cynical but helpful in his office. history majors should take him.
There are weekly hmwks on readings from two books. The one he actually utilizes for the test is the book you do not do homework on, Nash. He's kinda cute, smart, interesting, and challenging. A wonderful teacher really! And he's hilarious at times! Great for History majors who like essay tests!
I would suggest another professor for this subj. his lectures are awful you won't learn anything he is very unorganized. Tests are solely based on Nash not on the books used for HW assignments. Essay Tests primarily. very hard grader even on HW.
very smart and witty; somewhat disorganized. the class is pretty easy if you actually go, pay attn, and do the homeowork. i enjoyed taking his class bc he made history sort of enjoyable and was funny to listen and watch. overall, if you are motivated to learn you will do well and enjoy this class
I'd like to buy this hunk a razor, cause he'd be super hot if he weren't so scruffy. He's not as disorganized as you'd think and has a great sense of humor.
His lectures were okay kinda jumpy, but made sense kinda. The homwork was easy and exams were pretty easy. I just didn't like his style. I did okay in his class, but was lost somewhere in the middle.
Funny guy, calls himself an **** and if you are one to him he will be to you but if you're nice he will be nice too. Homework and readings mean a lot, tests are essay and come straight from a study guide (gives like 20 things to know, asks 5 on test so just know half - he gives a choice on test)
DO THE HW! I didn't do 3 so I got a B. And speak in class for your participation points. Tests are fairly easy if you answer the study guides beforehand. Quizzes are supereasy--multiple choice. Lectures are okay, he can be funny at times. Not bad for a GE required class.
Hes a teacher that will keep it real with you. Ask questions and he will be nice enough to help you with anything, but if you're rude he will be rude back. His lectures are confusing cuz his thoughts jump around a lot. Must do the readings and the homeworks. Study guide is basically the test
His lecture is totally different from his test. Need to do a lot of reading. The tests are extremely difficult. Do not recommend this proffessor.
I took him after getting a D in Dr. Black's class, and he was so much better. He actually keeps his students informed. Homework or no, I'd rather have that than someone who is in their own world and doesn't seem to care much about students at all.
I did not like him at all... he thought he was God and he is way far from it. I tell all my friends never to take a history class with him.
My only advice for this class is to do the study guide and study it for dear life. Your test consists of your study guide. Also, do the homework..it's not that bad, just a few questions from the book..plus, he has a lot of extra credit opportunities that are so random.
Unorganized!!! He teaches the material and would probably say one sentence about nothing..but that one sentence has everything to do w/the test. He was always unprepared. Boring class...wasn't interesting at all.
go to class! i never did so i never knew what was going on. he's pretty chill. there's 6 hw assignments but he drops one or if u do all 6, 1 will be extra credit. there's 2 multiple choice quizzes and 2 tests, the midterm and the final both of which are essay type.im getting a low C so go to CLASS!
He's VERY lenient. His tests require writing essays--not bad at all when you take good notes (the 2 MC quizes were hard). To me, history was boring, but he changed that. Do the annoying HW cuz they are easy points that can hurt if you don't turn them in. He gave random extra credit points and even a take-home final!
hilarious guy. very dry sense of humor. just do the work and follow directions and you can get an A. very reasonable teacher. would take him again. he likes you to use in class notes on quizes and papers. also when giving a book reference he likes you to give ones that show you read more than the intro.
He's an awesome professor. Looks like a GAP ad, lol! He's great, he teaches well, he's hilarious too! I enjoyed his class. He also teaches history at LBCC.
I found his lectures to be very thematic which helps to put history in perspective and take it out of the realm of dates and names. His homework was thought-provoking and challenging, however if you follow his guideline and analyze not summarize you will do very well. He likes participation but I don't see how he counts it as part of the grade.
was taken in fall 2003 and withdrew like 10 weeks into it. kinda boring but he seems cool. there were no exams. or maybe just never got to it. but the grades were mainly based on a presentation report thing... once he showed a clip from "the simpsons," and i can't remember why.
He is a really good teacher. I have never gotten an A in any of my previous history classes but I got an A in his class. He is a really cool, kind of laid back teacher. He is also funny in his own weird way. I recommend him.
He's a funny guy. There are two quizzes about half way through before the midterm and the final. It consisted of 10 multiple choice questions and 3 writing questions(about a paragraph for each question). There are two writing tests. Homeworks are long, boring, and challenging.
As long as you take notes, do the homework, and study for the two tests, you will do fine in his class. He is very nice and his lectures are interesting. He is humorous and easy-going.
Dont take lawler for 301 if you want a good grade, Cool guy bad teacher
Needless to say, he was the worst teacher I had at LB. I have zero respect for the man and can't believe he is still teaching.
Lawler was excellent in my opinion. I did not care about the subject at all,but his lectures were awesome and I learned alot. His tests and papers were easy if you followed his instructions. As I look back on my college career, his class stands out as being one I loved taking. If you want a challenge and growth as a student take this professor.
First day of class he told us his goal was to get this class of 44 students down to 10. Yeah he is extremely hard and not all that nice at times. I would totally not recommend taking him because I hated his class.

He made me work for my A, but it was worth it. He's there to teach, not make friends. This strategy works for him, and students. He's a bit condescending, but it's meant in humor. Participation, and turning assignments in on time will promise you at least a C, maybe a B. Hard work, and listening to his comments promise you a B, maybe an A.

A very fun class, test may be a little hard but if you study you should be good. Funiest teacher i have ever had.
I took him years ago so I am not very clear on his work load, I think I pulled off an A. But jeez he is so Hot, I showed up and paid attention in class because of that if nothing else.
I was not interested in this class at all, but his lectures were very interesting and the work given was managable. I loved his sarcastic, dry sense of humor.
Go to lectures and he's a breeze.
funniest teacher ever. not a bad work load. understanding. i dont recomend the winter class tho its too long. he is interesting and makes class go by faster. pick him
Great teaching style! actually makes the class interesting, work load ... well he makes u work for an A ... even if its an undergrad course ... but highly recommend his course ... very funny! (^_^)
He makes history fun. Homeworks are kind of boring though. You have to read the text in order to perform well on the written test. On the day of the test he will randomly choose two topics for discussion. There will be at least seven terms you must respond to, just put alot of effort into it with alot of background information to support your
He makes history intersting and knows how to make his students think. Homeworks are reasonable and be sure to show some thinking was put forth, after all it is a critical thinking class. Overall, intesting class and i recommend it.
His class was not boring nor fun. Although, he doesn't force us to read the whole textbook, we must read it in order to do well on the test. There are two test in the semester and both of it are essay questions. The length of the essays must be at least four to five pages. Overall, I didn't like his class because he expect too much from the essays.
Professor Lawler is super hot! The class was an easy A and he is awesome to look at.
BORING!
His lectures were always all over the place, sometimes hard to follow and read what he wrote. If you go to class everyday you'll be fine.
Good teacher, very easy to listen to. He knows so much about history. Can get a little excited during lecture and go in depth but everything you need to know for the tests are from lecture. For the Beach board quizzes read the introductions as well as skim through the documents and you'll be fine.
He is an awesome history. He is very laid back and he's hillarious! I really enjoyed his class. For the beachboard quizzes use your book and I'd suggest you read whatever he assigns, it will make the tests a lot easier
sometimes the test are tricky and when he is lecturing, u still know where he is because he is jumping around. but in general, easy
He can be kind of a jerk at first but he eventually gets a little better... don't let him know that though. His class is kind of easy and the online quizes rock if you remember to do them. The tests are a little tough. The grade comes 100% from tests and quizes. His lectures can be a little confusing at times because he jumps around.
Not a difficult class, but keeping up with the reading is important. Online quizzes are easy, but in-class tests are pretty difficult. Just keep up with the reading. His lectures are usually pretty interesting; he knows his stuff. He likes tangents. He gets pretty sarcastic sometimes, but you can *usually* tell when he's joking. Funny guy. :)
Absolutely adored this teacher. I have hated history my entire life and he made me like it. His lectures are interesting. You do not have to go because he gives a study guide before the test and you can just read the book, but I personally benefited from going. He gave a take home final. He is also cute. I definitely recommend this teacher.
This guy was all over the place. His notes are unorganized. It's like he expects you to know the material for his test without him teaching it to you properly. Plus to top it all off he's a jerk and a smart ass!!
Omg, his lecture is great and he is funny. His Exam is so much difficult, but if you READ, study and pay attention in class, you'll do alright. It's an okay class. He have quizzes every week on beachboard and there only 3 Exam.
extremely boring lectures. that's about it. tests are graded fairly and i guess it's a decent class. i will only recommend him if there's no one else more interesting. lolz
It's a chill class to have. Your attendance is not mandatory so that makes it easy. Just make sure you study for the tests and do the online quizes and you'll be fine. Oh and he's a really cool guy, really funny!
go to lectures if you want to do well on the 3 test. everything he goes overs can be answers for test. if wanna do well in class , do beachboard quizzes on semi-long reading to do well in class. its a boring class except when in good mood and funny!
He is a funny funny man! He knows it is a GE class and knows more than half the students dont care about history. Accordingly, he grades very generously, gives online quizes, and at the end lets you either keep the grade you have or do a take-home final! How easy do you want the guy to be? Not the best for actual learning though.
Worst professor ever for this class...doenst teach well... expects u to figure everyhting out from the readings... gets off topic... and hell no..his not cute..
He tries to be funny but his classes are really boring. He does not explain things well. Tough grader, hard to get full credit on any question. He is full of himself, really did not like him. I say it is the worse professor I had at CSULB (and I am a senior). Got a B.
If you want to learn anything don't take him. I feel I put over 100 hours into the class papers and got nothing out of the class. Do not take him. He is horrible!!
There is way too much reading. He expects us to read half of a book, plus several long articles all in one week. You kind of do need to read it all so that you can use it in your papers. He is a hard grader. The only good thing about his class is that we got out early. I do not recommend him at all!
I have learn a lot about History in his class than in High School. Barely any homework but a lot of reading that can pile up very quickly if you don't stay up with the material. I will never forget his "John Smith is great" quote, even though it didn't help me on the exam.
he is so full of it. TRUST ME...IM GOING TO BE A TEACHER AND NOW HATE HISTORY BECAUSE OF HIM...HE NEEDS TO GET OFF HIS HIGH HORSE AND COME BACK TO REALITY ! WHAT A WASTE OF CLASSROOM TIME...
Loved this class. Yes he can be full of himself but he knows his stuff. He makes history really interesting. His notes all over the place. He doesn't BS which i loved. I only had to take three tests and didn't have to take the final.
This class was so hard. I mean ridiculously hard. So much reading and hard grading. It is a class where you either float or drown.
Simply amazing! Pros: Hilarious! If you like sarcasm, he's the perfect professor. He also (pretty much) looks like Dr. Gregory House from the show "House". He's super smart and knows history well. Cons: His notes were all over the board and kind of confusing. His grading evens out the laid back feeling for the class, unfortunately -not easy but fun
his notes are were all over the place and hard to understand. he grades hard and if you are not interested in history then you should probably get a different professor because you would probably get lost in the lecture. make sure to read the books though if you do take the class
Good class and good lecturer. The writing was reasonable. He made me enjoy American History! He's also young and cool--very collegiate.
To all the people that found this teacher to be boring, full of himself or hard in any way, are possibly just lazy and did not pay attention to lectures AT ALL. Probably the funniest teacher I've ever had and most likely the BEST lecturer I've ever had. All of his tests are straight from lecture and reading is only necessary for the homework.
He does look like House. His lectures can be tiring from time to time, but he does make you laugh as well. His tests are mostly writing and he's fair in grading. Don't be surprise what he has in stores for the final and trusts me, its a good thing. :-)
Looks like a young Dr. House. This class is fun because of his humor and sarcasm, however it is HARD. extremely hard grader. essays are subjective. You think you did great, get ur paper back and it's a C. Hard to earn a A. Goes off topic sometimes, but so funny. If you dont mind a wake up call and some struggling for a GE class, then here you go.
He is quite intimidating at first but is not too bad. You read for homework. His notes are definitely crazy so you cannot copy them exactly. You have to write it so you understand it( called good notetaking skills for those who can't keep up with his notes) Almost dropped the class when I saw what he wanted 4 1st exam but stayed. Got an A in class
Awesome professor, very entertaining and funny, you'll never be too bored. Just do what he says and you should be fine :)
To all the future teachers attempting to take this class, please do not be fooled by all of the positive comments from Lawler's regular History courses. In this course he is definitely not helpful in any way and is extremely unfair. Trust me, choose a different professor, one who doesn't have something against future teachers.
Funny and interesting professor, though often sarcastic and cynical. Very hard grader. I love history but am not enjoying this class.
Hated this class. This is my fav. history subject but he made it awful. do not take him, he may be funny but he's a jerk. Not helpful and tests are difficult, extremely biased when grading. DO NOT TAKE HIM
he is a funny guy but his notes are hard to copy and understand. there is a paper due which he grades very hard on. the tests are essay questions and extremely difficult to get an A or B on. i would not recommend taking him. lots of reading to do.
This is not an easy class, so don't expect an easy A. HOWEVER, you do learn a lot. Instead of mindlessly making you memorize details, he expects you to really know the material (which isn't that hard if you pay attention during lecture). I got a C because I slacked off and turned in the final late, but I don't even care because I learned so much.
His teaching style is mostly about making you think (it's a critical thinking class after all). There is some group work. Assignments are short answer questions about the book. There are two essays to write as well as a midterm that is essay-based. Take him if you write well, you'll get an A. If you don't...you might like him. I didn't though lol
Interesting professor with a get sense of humor. I found his class to be a lot of fun, and it's what woke my up in the morning (9:30 class). Don't expect an easy A, he grades hard, and expects you to actually think instead of mindlessly blurting out facts, and there is a lot of writing. Nevertheless it was one of my favorite classes in college.
This class was horribly boring. I am a straight A student and struggled to get even a B in the class. It was extremely disappointing. I would recommend taking someone else if you dont want your history interests to be ruined
Had him in the morning , he was pretty fun, teaching style was good, i actually liked history after the semester, tests are EASY it might seem long theres an essay , mult choice , and a small response ...believe it or not the mult choice was the hardest one, because the other sections you are ONLY voicing basically what you learned =)
The class was pretty hard. He gives you the essay questions for each test a week before the test and allows you to have a cheat sheet. It seems as though it would be easy, but blurting out facts just doesn't cut it. You have to analyze every detail.
he's a really sarcastic guy which i find funny. when he lectures it really does show that he knows everything and probably the significance. so when tests come around you really need to know analytical stuff rather than just giving facts. overall hes a good teacher. coming to class i find it mandatory if you don't read the book.
A lot of people are saying he is hard. So not.. just go to class and take good notes. He basically tells you everything you need to know. 3 exams, can use cheat sheet and also gives you outline of exams, how much easier do you want it? if you acutally spend time studying for exams and not just the night before the test, it's a very easy A.
This class makes you struggle for a B. Don't take if you know what's good for you!! He's pretty useless in answering questions too.
he's so hot! he's very sarcastic, but i love it. take good notes, listen, attend class regularly & you should be fine. there are 3 test, & he lets you bring it a half paper of notes. what else can you ask for? those that don't like are just LAZY.
He was boring.
Cool class. It has comedy, sarcasm, and a hint of awkward moments. He's a great prof! I love his teaching style and tangents he take in most lectures. You'll enjoy it!
Not a very challenging class, just requires hard work, really study notes & book.His lectures are funny & interesting you learn alot but his notes are all over the place. take him, hes a cutie (;
Cool, funny, sarcastic and informative. If you plan on taking U.S History you should take his class
Lawler is the perfect example of teachers that start out tough and get progressively easier. He made a methods class interesting and enjoyable he definitely gets my vote.
This class is do-able. I admit that I am lazy when it comes to keeping up with reading and stuff, and this class has a lot of reading. If you go to class and take notes and actually study for the tests (which are blue book essay tests by the way), the class is do-able. This class is hard, but if you work at it you'll be fine.
If you like history and can write a good essay, you'll do well in his class.
This is a great class. He is very sarcastic which makes lectures more interesting! Tests are easy as long as you read and can write a good essay. His notes are crazy and all over the place but if you read ahead of time it is easy to follow along. Highly recommend this class with this prof!
Take this professor! He's the best!!! He's very funny and interesting and is a total babe!!! (Hands off ladies, this ones mine) But overall the class is pretty easy, all you do is talk about things in class. And all you have to do is write good essays!
He is so hot!! Can you say eye candy? As far as the workload, it's pretty intense. There are a lot of hard readings and papers. If you're good at writing essays, you'll be fine. Just go to him for help. I basically got A's on everything and I still went to his office hours for tips on improvement. Plus, I wanted to check out the nice view. ;)
As long as you do the reading, you have to actually read, then you will be fine. Also, now how to write a good essay. A
AVOID IF POSSIBLE. His class was very boring. He just talked and tried to be funny. Everyone in the class was confused about what he wanted in his essays. We didn't learn till AFTER he graded them. When the class was evaluating him, he stated "I already know what you guys think of me" and left. That says a lot. Thanks Lawler, I hate history now.
This class was pretty great the times I was able to stay awake. The hours didn't really agree with me, but his sarcasm and wit were able to keep me awake for about half the class. If you read the book and take good notes this class is a breeze
He doesn't make you buy a book which is good but none of his instructions are clear. He focuses way too much on grammar. He never gives you an answer to any of his questions. He grades the homework really hard, which sucks cause if you mess up, theres nothing you can do about it. He's pretty funny, until you realize he's a lowkey jerk
This class was boring, I expected history to be fun, it usually is to me, don't go to class, total waste of time, just read the excessive book. Tries to be fun, isn't.
Very full of himself and no matter what you say, he will always have a way to prove you wrong. It got to a point where I was really worried about my own self esteem. He made me feel like I was never right, and I was worried about going to class. He makes you read a near impossible amount of work, and his lectures are really unorganized!
the worst
This class isn't easy, but if you're willing to put in the work and actually listen to him in class, then you'll get a decent grade. He kept the lectures interesting, well i thought so. He's hard grader, I'll give you that but he's also a good professor.
Very hard to please. Hard grader. Must be able to write very well at a college level. Lecture notes are very unorganized. Must go to lecture and read the book to get complete material for the test. Funny teacher and gives very complete notes. He fully understands what he's talking about. Would recommend to students who write very well.
I'm taking this class over the summer and it is such a regret. I hate that his lectures are totally off from the assigned readings. His notes and lectures are all over the place. 3 quizzes and 1 final. It was difficult to retain all the information for the exams because of all the historical content.
Definitely not the easiest class especially for student who are lazy. If you do all your work and whats expected you should do fine. The professors is really sarcastic but also very smart. He definitely knows what he's teaching
no matter how hard u try, ur best just isnt good enough in this class... he does not even give u a good study guide.. ignore the good comments, he probably wrote them himself to get kids to take his class, trust me, i already regret taking him ...
His critical thinking class sure gets you thinking. Although his work may be challenging, he is an excellent professor. Entertaining and knows his stuff. The first half of the semester, make sure to go over your work thoroughly, but the second half, just do the work and you're good. If you go to class, be prepared for him calling you out on stuff.
Overall a descent professor, but really hard grader. 3 quizzes 1 final. You should really go to lectures because it helps but most stuff is in the book. Doesnt care about dates so dont bother memorizing them, wants to know WHY things happened.Hes very sarcastic and doesnt care what students think of him. If you actually try you should be fine.
Definitely knows what he is talking about, and if you go to class and do the reading then the tests aren't too difficult. Hard grader but as long as you show an understanding of the material you will receive a decent grade. 4 exams and 1 essay, also gives about 30-35 points for attendance which can help if you are borderline for a grade.
Interesting guy. He really did know his stuff and I found his sarcasm pretty hilarious. However, you MUST read the material as well as attend lectures to get higher than a C. He expects you to UNDERSTAND historical concepts, not just know them by memory. And I promise, his class becomes quite interesting if you pay attention well.
A very interesting course with a very interesting professor.. knows what he is talking about. would reccomend for anyone who is a poly sci major/ hist major or anyone who wants to learn how to learn in college. this class has strenthend my work ethic tremendously... reading is necessary.. overall grade: a
I think he's not quite as bad as people make him out to be although he has a pretty sarcastic but funny sense of humor. As long as you go to the lectures and understand the material (..which you should be able to grasp by now), you should do fine.
If you need help, go to his office hours: he'll update you on your grade or help you out (give hints) on difficult assignments. Do the reading, go to class,he's not an easy teacher, but if you're a good writer you'll be fine. Didn't study for the final and still got an A, just make sure to study from his study guides. Check Beachboard! He's witty :)
He is not a hard teacher, but he does expect you to do the work. There was only one paper and the final. He is a pretty funny guy, and if you show up and get involved in the discussions he is not bad.
He's funny, entertaining, and very sarcastic. Going to lecture is very helpful, as he explains concepts in the simplest ways. He is extremely smart, and possibly one of the best teachers I've ever had. The hardest part about his class was having to remember dates.
if you're a bad writer, don't take him (read: don't waste his time). Very smart, knows his stuff, & knows how to make it interesting & relevant. 2 exams, 1 paper, & weekly short answer questions. All straight to the point, making you think along the way. The paper is on a short (substantial) novel. Would take him again. Thank u again prof Lawler -c
I personally hated his class. I'm not a history person, there's weekly readings and homework questions and he's an extremely hard grader. He's entertaining though, and he has extremely sarcastic, dry humor. That's probably the only thing that got me through the 3 hour class...
Loved his class. He has a dryse of humor that is not for everyone but he is smart and knows his stuff. He expects your writing to be at college level which should be obvious since we're in college.Weekly assignments that can be done in five minutes. Midterm, Final, and one big paper. He is also very sexy (;
Lectures are VERY important. Textbook is less than helpful. Only midterm and final. He lists topics on the board and you have to write basically a paragraph on everything you know about it. Make connections, such as how it started, what happened, and the result. The result should be something that is not fully related but still happens becuz of it
midterm+final+essay. Textbook doesnt help. Lectures are FAR MUCH better, which is why I suggest you guys dont miss ANY of his lectures. His exams are about 95% from his lectures, especially finals. Also, he has essay topics on his exams, which you basically have to write about the connections and events of the topic. His lectures prepare u for that
pretty easy class! sometimes lectures can be boring, but definitely a manageable class. Nice teacher with a very dry sense of humor that I could see annoying some people. But overall I enjoyed the class!
Very boring class. He professor tries too hard to be funny and beats it around the bush instead of explaining things in a clear&concise manner. You don't really know how to do the assignments until after they're graded and 2 days before the exam he admitted that he didn't know what was going to be on it. I would recommend avoiding him.
He gives you a study guide for the essay exams. Not many teachers do that. Just go to class, do the study guides (2), try on the research paper, and you'll be fine with at least a B.
2 essays/Review Questions/MT/Final. Lawler was great! I actually enjoyed history with him. He doesn't just read off slides or notes, he actually makes us feel like were in the 18th century! I never read the book, which was a huge mistake. Make sure you do ALL the assignments, they're a few of them, but count a lot towards your grade.
Most boring class i have ever taken. Almost nobody shows up to lecture. Grades really hard. If you miss one assignment then your grade suffers a lot. AVOID TAKING HIM!
Lawler's extremely fair and reasonable. He tells you everything he wants upfront, and practically gives you the exam ahead of time on the study guide. Nothing should be a surprise in this class, and everything was extremely doable. An A was not hard to get. I find that the people who complain about this class are just extremely lazy and whiney.
His class is a lil more challenging than other GEs but not even close to horrible. People just like to complain. He gives study guides & all u have to do is study frm them. Mostly frm the book/some from lecture. Straight forward. He made history interesting for the most part, funny guy/laid back. This isn't high school anymore so keep that in mind.
his class is doable. he gives 3 exams and 1or 2 papers. he also assigns 2 or 3 sets of review questions. he gives study guides with the ID's and questions from the tests, so there's no reason not to do well. he's kind of a no nonsense sort of guy when it comes to work ethics, but he's also really sarcastic. don't take if you're a slacker
I don't even know how I managed to get an A in his class. He is not very easy, but is manageable. Better than most history teachers. Grading is your downfall, he is very strict on it and is picky. However if you pay attention and do every assignment to your best, you can get at least a B for sure. Easy B. Not an easy A.
Horribly boring. His lectures are poorly structured in that all he does is talk and read from a Word document (no slides/presentation of any sort). You have to really pay attention, take good notes, read, or just study for hours on end for you to even have a chance at getting a good grade on exams. His exams are all short answers. No MC.
I'm having a great time having Jeff as my professor. Attendance isn't mandatory but has lectures on Tuesdays and worksheets on Thursdays. His lectures are far from boring and makes early U.S. history interesting. Had one mini-essay, one exam, and one final. Quizzes are weekly, but online so it's impossible to fail them. Explain well on tests.
I love this class! Lawler is one of my favorite professors in college so far. He's funny and makes history very simple. He will never make things complicated or overwhelm you with work. I'm having a great time learning history from him…take him if you can!
Good professor! sometimes was boring but interesting class and he helps whenever you need it.just one midterm and final and quizes every week. He provided study guide, thats pretty helpful. you'll have to read two novels and do a test on them but they were not hard at all. i really recomend him!
His lectures were really interesting and informative. Always looked forward to his lectures. Textbook is very helpful but not 100% necessary if you take pay attention and take good notes. That's how good his lectures are. He's also pretty hot.
His lectures were extremely clear and very interesting. Always looked forward to his lectures. Book very helpful but his lectures are so informative that it wasn't necessary during the last half of the semester. However, he gives weekly assignments that will mess up your grade if you miss a couple.
Lawler is filled with humor! He is a great professor. No exams! Isn't that great? Only weekly quizzes online, so there a piece of cake. 3 group projects. Good luck finding responsible group mates! One folder due at the end of semester (includes notes on each chapter of book). EASY A!
I loved his class. He's a great guy. He knows what he's talking about, and makes the class enjoyable. There's a couple of written assignments, all easy, and weekly online quizzes. There are two essay based exams and two essay tests based on mandatory reading. I recommend this class if you like history. He's truly great, and as a bonus, he's hot.
I have to admit, I had a fat crush on this teacher since my freshman year but it's mainly because of his dry sense of humor & just how he presents himself. Lawler wants you to attend class & pay attention so he sometimes includes in-class assignments but they are very easy & helpful for the tests which are ALL written but he gives a study guide.
Do not take this class if you're just taking it at a GE. He will bore you to death and make you work more than needed. Study guide does not help at all. He takes his subject so serious and expects you to do the same. It's history for crying out loud, no one cares about history. If you want an easy A history class. This isn't the one. Save yourself.
Lectures are super boring. Only one midterm and a final, but it's all written. He gives you a study guide and allows one flashcard, but he's a pretty tough grader. Weekly online quizzes boost your grade, but his tests are pretty difficult. I would avoid his class if you're taking it for GE's.
lectures are usually pretty boring, he just talks off a word doc (no slides) so you really have to pay attention. sometimes he can be funny tho. online quizzes are nice boost to your grade, but can screw you over if you miss them. going to class is probably good. if you ask him for help he'll help, but not otherwise. exams are written, not mc. meh
I took his night class, which was once a week. His class consisted of online quizzes, critical thinking assignments, 2 Exams (Midterm, Final). Provides a study guide which is extremely helpful for the exam. You don't really need the book, just take good notes during his lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but can help.
Good guy, he really picks at your brain. The majority of his class was group projects and written assessments.
He is the coolest guy! Seriously. If you cant pass the class with at least a B you arent trying hard enough. He gives you the answers you just have to pay attention. You dont even need to read the book. 2 tests. Quizzes every week(unlimited time & easy). He is so chill. Talk to him! Hes very understanding. Favorite guy :)
Pay attention in class and take your time during in-class assignments. Easy to pass if you try. Textbook probably needed if you want an A. 1 midterm (all short answeressay), 1 final (all short answeressay), easy online quizzes and a little more challenging in-class assignments. Cool guy and interesting lectures.
Very nice guy, tests aren't too hard and he is clear about what he wants. Not the easiest class, but anyone can receive an A if they put in enough work. On the other hand if you are a remember some dates and names and know what points to hit you don't need to study much.
Lawler can come off as an intimidating guy, but if you get to talk to him he is actually really nice and unders tanding. Group projects are the basis of your grade and the essays aren't too bad. He really wants you to think in depth about what he is trying to get across. Be ready for plenty of questions!
He was a good teacher and clear on what he wanted. Handed out the study guides for both short essay midterm and final. (only 2 tests) There were two group assignments throughout the semester only one class period, and not mandatory to work with others. Weekly quizzes which are easy. As long as you show up to class and listen, you can get an A.
If you hate history, this is the class for you! All you have to do is take weekly online quizzes, 3 in class assignments, 1 midterm, and 1 final. He lets you use the front and back of an index card for his tests; both are essay-only tests. He gives out A LOT of extra credit. I hate history and somehow managed to get an A in his class.
Professor lawyer is an easy professor. He does give random extra credit opportunities. Weekly quizzes that can be found on the internet. The exam is literally the study guide. He is super easy. very straight forward on what he wants. Really easy class.
Just show up to class, take group quizzes and you'll pass. He has one midterm (you can use front and back of a notecard) and the final is an essay which he gives you months to do. He was very nice, funny and helpful. I'd love to take another one of his classes in the future.
The class was in a big lecture hall so it was very hard to communicate with the professor. I sent him a couple emails with questions and I never got a reply. This class also requires a lot of group work which is difficult in the beginning but easy to adjust to. There is a lot of reading, but its nice that the textbook is online.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He lectures in circles, and barely uses the powerpoint. There's tons of reading, and you can't do the essays or group work without the book. He's unapproachable, and it's hard to follow the material
BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never know what hes talking about because he gets off topic a lot. If you hate history this class will be super boring, but if you love it then you will love his class. Overall he a super chill teacher not much work only when you go with your facilitator.
He has a very dry humor that most of the bad reviewers dont understand. Hes very nice!! Easily got a B+. Put in a little effort & u will have an A. We had 4 essays (1 for each book we read), & 4 group work assignments (i did mine alone, he didnt care). Just follow his directions and ur golden. I hardly went to class, i passed easily.
this was probably the most boring class i have ever taken. He talks all through lecture that you're basically falling asleep. You do not have to go to class just for the facilitator sessions, and he also gives study guides. it was a pretty easy class.
Great sense of humor, gives specific study guides that exactly like the tests. Show up to review sessions and do the facilitator sessions and you will easily pass. Novels are easy to read, make sure to use quotes when writing historical thinking responses. Highly suggest Lawler if you don't want a lot of work.
Textbook isn't needed, but if you do want to it's online anyways. Has you read 3 short novels with long response questions for each, 2 written exams. Every other 2 weeks there's facilitator sessions that help you with the novels and questions. Overall, the class was enjoyable for me because he's pretty chill and has interesting lectures.
Lectures arent mandatory. You do have assigned books and you dont really need the online textbook as long as you have the lecture notes. One homework assignment for each unit and its not too difficult. Lets you use a notecard on the midterm and final.
Liberal Studies majors, don't take him. This class is unnecessarily difficult and he's super unclear of his expectations. I typically do well on papers, but his lack of directions made it difficult to pass. Class is composed of 3 essays, 3 in class group projects, 1 web page, and 1 midterm. Not worth the stress, take someone else!
If you're a liberal studies major, you will probably have a tougher time in his class. He isn't very clear on his expectations, so getting an A on his papers very difficult. Attending class isnt really necessary except for the days you do in class work. Other than that read the book and ppts and you'll get a solid B.
Lawler is a great professor who is very knowledgeable, and passionate, about the subject he teaches. He posts the readings online because they come from multiple sources and you take notes on them, then discuss them in the next class. Straightforward grader with very doable assignments IF you do the readings and participate in class.
This class goes deep into history and you have to be ready to read a lot. He grades a bit tough and expects a lot from the free response questions on his tests. He really expects you to know history well and explain it with concrete details. He tends to go off topic at times which can be hard to keep up with. Hes very sarcastic and funny though.
Prof Lawler is a nice guy, and considering I am a history major and finished the rest of my courses with A's except this one class was really frustrating. His essay prompts are deliberately vague and feedback was almost non-existent, so it was hard to understand what was met on assignments (he does not return essays, just gives you a grade online):
as a liberal studies major, many people warned his class would be challenging, but it wasn't that bad! as long as u read a lot & write well you'll be fine! graded by few things & tests are all essays. requires a lot of reading material :/ but provides exact study guides for exams. a funny guy & will provide good help if u need it!
Go to his lectures, pay attention, and you'll pass. Literally that's it.
You literally don't need to attend his lectures but just attend the Historical Thinking meetups to get the points you need. It felt like a waste of time going to his lectures being bored, but he is a very funny guy. Good professor, makes jokes, and tries to make his lectures fun.
The textbook is online and is free. You are not required to go to his lectures, but you are required to go to your Historical Thinking groups to do his assignments (every 2 weeks; 6 meetings in total). All you need for his 2 exams are in his lectures, but his lectures can be boring. Reading is not required but is recommended. Overall pretty chill.
Professor Lawler did an amazing job teaching California history. The lectures are all super interesting, even more so are the readings. There's quite a few of them you have to do with annotations, but overall none of the work is too hard and Lawler explains everything in a way that's easy to understand
Lawler is an amazing professor who is extremely knowledgeable, he's a funny guy and if you love history you'll love him. Every week you have annotations to do based on the readings provided, they aren't hard just tedious if you put them off. Only had to write one paper and it was for the final exam, overall a very interesting course.
Taking this class over winter session was rigorous, yet very rewarding. The class is only 4 weeks long, so the deadlines are tight. However, Prof. Lawler makes the workload manageable, with 6 modules each consisting of book annotations, a quiz, and historical thinking. No exams, but one 750 word paper at the end which wasn't too bad.
this is defiantly the worse class I have ever taken in my college experience. He has completely changed his curriculum from the previous reviews so disregard those. The whole class is centered around designing a game since he loves games. It is so much harder than it seems. His instructions are not clear. I have to send 8 emails before he responds.
Its basically a self taught class since he probably talks about American history once in his class. The rest of the time he spends taking about sources and making a game. I did not sign up to build a game because you like games. You teach yourself all of history by reading the textbook and doing annotations. He is terrible at responding to emails.
TRUST ME!!! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He takes forever to respond to emails and is not the most helpful. Not a normal class, you teach yourself all the history by reading the textbook i think he lectured maybe once, maybe. The entire class is based off of designing a game, LOTS OF WORK, YOU DON'T LEARN MUCH, VERY BORING, VERY TIME CONSUMING
this class is terrible and my entire class would agree! He may be nice but he can't teach for his life. You will spend the entire class doing research and designing a game. The most boring lectures I have ever been in. You will not learn anything. Everything is self taught. Might as well purchase a history book and teach yourself.
I'm not the best student, I tend to do just enough to get by and Lawler's class was super easy for me, never really showed up to class but studied when it was time for an exam. Only 2 exams and a page paper due about every other Sunday night.
Entirely unclear grading criteria. You cannot require more to be completed than has definitively been required in the assignment profile. I am an A student and completed every assignment thoroughly, attended every class, participated, and did more than required and was still docked 20%. Makes no sense. Also, the class is entirely self taught.
Deviated from past curriculums for a game design project that the entire semester is based around. We barely spoke about American history, and only given a handful of assignments. I feel like he has approached this class as a game designer, rather than a history teacher- which doesn't help a class full of different majors.
I took this class during the 2020-2021 Winter session. The class wasn't assignment heavy so I was able to fully enjoy my Winter break. The reading material comes from a free textbook and Lawler had very easy to understand lectures which made the class a breeze. All his expectations are clear and he is very easy to reach out to for questions.
Great professor. He graded everything super fast and gave feedback every time. It's not the easiest of A's but very possible. I took him for winter session and the class went by so fast. Not much work, just a lot of reading. No exams just 1 final paper that's only 1-2 pages.
Professor Lawler is an understanding professor and has super interesting lectures. The class is based off textbook annotations, discussion posts, and historical thinking questions. It can be a lot if you leave the assignments to the last minute, but I think they're pretty reasonable. He grades super quick too. Exams are free response.
Three assignments due every unit: Historical Thinking, annotations, discussion. Tests are like historical thinking assignments. Recommend emailing him drafts of your assignment so he can give you feedback before you turn it in. Tough grader, wants creativity, effort, and realistic situations. Annotations should take topic further.
Professor Lawler for 307 was Great. He first comes off as sorta mean but its the way he talks when really he is a really chill and nice guy. His lectures are very coordinated and very responsive to emails. A little messy only due to this new history class. You will be doing many readings and 3 essays that are reasonably manageable.
I remember that Professor Lawler assigned students to do Historical Thinking Documents, online meetings, time mapper, exams, and summarizing the chapter's material. You will need to manage your time wisely and be on top of everything to pass the class with at least a B-. The professor is understanding of the hardships the students face.
Loved prof lawler! Engaging class and easy work load. Provides all readings that essays are on and explains sources well. He wants you to come to class having read the assigned readings so discussions can be more fruitful. Super nice guy!
Lawler is a very caring teacher that really prioritizes student mental health. I took his online winter class for two weeks and it was extremely fast paced. Every unit's workload is due every three days. I was working full-time and this made it harder to do the work, but even then I was able to get an A so it's definitely doable.
TAKE THIS CLASS!! I took him spring 2022, and hes honestly a good teacher, you can just text him on slack and he will get back to you when he can. He also gives your extension if youre going through something. Just make sure you dont abuse his kindness. Also this class is really one of those classes that you dont stress about.
Textbook is free, 5 Annotations per Section (2 sections in Each Unit. Make them as detailed as possible), 6 HT Assignments (2 questions, 500wc, make detailed), 2 Cranial Exams (writing based, 600 word limit essay). Facilitator meetings mandatory. Must complete 1/3 slack assignments (reading an article and answering a question)
The lectures were fantastic. Homework was a weekly reading to annotate, which really wasn't difficult. He's relatively an easy grader when it comes to essays. I would highly recommend this class.
Lawler is a very kind professor, though his lectures can be boring the work itself is easy. There aren't many assignments and only 2 "exams". I would recommend him if you can follow along with boring lectures since the work is so easy. You don't have to go to class only on important days.
The professor is great, and California history was surprisingly interesting. Highly recommend the class.
Dr. Lawler is always available for office hours and responds to emails quickly. He has great facilitators that help out with assignments. He gave 2 extra credit opportunities that are worth a lot of points. This class was very intense in reading and writing. He is a tough grader, but he does give you suggestions to improve.
Professor Lawler is incredibly funny: he's got a dry and sarcastic humor. His classes are less lecture-based and more like discussing the readings (mandatory), homework is light. It's a few annotations for a passage per week (which you don't have to read the whole thing) and two projects over the whole semester.
Pretty decent guy, he's not too bad at teaching his lectures, even though it may get boring sometimes. Annotations, 6 Historical Thinking assignments (slightly picky when grading these), 2 Exams (free response and you can create a cheat card), and a mapping project determine your grade. He provides discussion posts as extra credit. (10 points max)
Professor Lawler's HIST173 class is well-structured, with a reasonable workload. Annotations, historical thinking assignments, and exams make up the grading. unstuck study ai was a great study tool alongside the free textbook. Overall, a manageable and engaging course.
Prof Lawler is funny but... I really don't like his teaching style and he's incredibly boring. His assignment are the similar to 471 just annotations, discussions, and papers/gaming analytically. He gives no substantial feedback compared to my CC History professors. I'm sure many like him ONLY bc of his semi-light workload.
I liked him. Weekly readings & annotations, project & presentation, final essay. He lectures complex strings of thought on the weekly readings with little time for students to participate. I learned a lot and would take him again. Downside doesn't give much feedback in a "historical writing" sense, more so on content & group project SUCKED (optout)
Professor Lawler is slightly disorganized and does not give specific feedback. The course consists of 4 sets of annotations, 4 essays (~2 pages, hand-written), and 1 final (hand-written). The coursework itself is easy once you get a feel for what he is looking for, but you will have to come to that conclusion alone.
Attendance isn't necessary but lectures are helpful towards understanding the assignments. Professor is very passionate about history with a lot to say, I think other people could find it boring or unnecessary how much he talked but it didn't bother me. Grading is tougher than I expected but the assignments were sparse and easy so I didn't mind
Professor Lawler does talk a lot, but class isn't mandatory unless it's for Historical thinking which is only 5 times the whole semester. The class grade is based off perusall discussions, Historical thinking questions, a midterm, and a final. Understanding the class material is simply and doesn't require much, but it can get boring.
easy enough class. weekly annotations and only two midterms. take him if u can
He gets off topic a lot during class, he does not present effective power points during class so it was kind of hard to take notes, although if you complete the annotations, plus the mandatory historical thinking sessions, you could probably get an A without attending. Only a midterm and final, 5 mandatory sessions with an assignment due after.
If you get this class its really not the worst thing in the world i would just try and take a diff prof. Attendance is only mandatory for a few sessions but other than that all he does is talk nonsense during class. so boring& hard to follow. he has weird requirements for his assignments and doesn't give much feedback. also unlocks them for 1 day.
Professor requires assignments to be handwritten, presumably because he is scared of AI. Ironically this just makes it easier for someone to use AI since he can never prove you actually copied from it if you were to use it. Unlocks assignments super late so you have a very limited window to do them. Otherwise fine, pretty easy.
