Interesting and for old guy sexy
Very accessible, clear instructions, demanding but gives you the requirements and tools to meet those demands. Good lecturer who won't put you to sleep.
You just have to know how to read the directions
Cool guy, different spin on history. Great lectures. Everything is lined up for you to do well in the class, its just up to you if you want to do everything.

Excellent teacher, would definitely recommend. Makes class enjoyable.
Great teacher! I really looked forward to the lectures. He gives little facts that are interesting to know. He has a great sense of humour that gets you through history. 100% recomendation.
This class is very hard for a full time student you must read four novels. The tests are based on novels and a little bit of the lecture. Lectures are interesting though.
Extremely difficult. A mass amount of reading, he tries to trick students on exams and quizzes, watch out. Wouldn't recommend.
Very interesting guy. In a smaller setting, I'm confident he would be personally involved with every student, but in a class this size it would be impossible. He does very well for 200 students in a lecture!
He is a very good teacher. The book is a bit confusing but all in all very fun lectures. Makes history interesting. Learn the truth of whats happened in the past. Not any of that "cloumbas sailed the ocean blue in 1492" B.S..
HE rocks movies or music every day read the book and you will get a B easy
almost all of his exams are based on lecture; if you go to class you will do well on the tests. puts his own ideology into the teaching-doesnt glamorize US history. reading is dry, but not too difficult. 15 pt. quiz on reading every friday sucks though
He is a funny professor and is helpful for students in need. His tests are 80% of the lecture and 20% on the reading. There are 15 pt. quizes every friday.
He's a great teacher
good class, but its huge and impersonal. i enjoy this class, even though it moves quickly. i hate history, and i dont hate this class. that has to say something about him...
An awesome professor. Very interesting lectures. Very helpful if you go to his office hours. Go to class and read and the course is easy.
A kool teacher. Go to class and read the book and you are in for a good grade.
good guy, funny, and good looking. bet he was quite the hottie back in the day
This guy knows exactly what he's doing, and makes everything easy as cake. He makes lectures fun without being one of those teachers that wants to be your best friend. History usually blows, but it didn't blow quite as much in this class.
This class is a piece of cake, but make sure you READ!
One of the best teachers I have had. Made lectures interesting and used lots of videos and music clips. The only problem I had was with the 15pt quizzes every friday. Make them worth 5 pts or something.
Very easy to follow lectures and makes each lecture interesting. Cracks jokes to lighten the mood, but not distractingly. Tests are easy if you read and the little meetings/quizes are fun with a good TA. He makes you listen to rap/acid rock/rock!
One of my favorite teachers at Chico. His Foreign Policy class is amazing. He really gets you involved in class discussions which is great because you actually retain the information given. Keeping up with the reading is crucial though!! Don't fall behind
Awesome teacher! Presents information in an interesting way; shares several historical stories, including music, that makes the class fun to go to. You will learn a lot and enjoy his commentary. (He is liberal though.)
Great teacher that knows his stuff. Shines some good light on the material. He did a good job of teaching 200years of material in only 15 weeks
One of the best teachers in the department. Very clear and provides great anecdotes with his stories to help tie together the events of history. Tests are hard, but many of the answers are in the lectures... Very thorough and precise. Highly recommend
Lectures are very clear. Exams are straight from what he covers in lectures, and what little reading there is during the week. He really engages the class, and makes himself approachable.
Fine teacher, good sense of humor, and quite handsome for middle-aged man.
Be good at taking notes, he outlines most of it for you, but make sure to remember the little things he says!! definitely read, the quizzes add up! tests are hard...pay attention during class!
Livingston is the man. He makes the class fun, not afraid to say what he believes and he makes class interesting by playing tight music (classic Rock). Liberal teacher who counters Republican tendencies of Chico Students. Take this class!
What was I thinking!!! Boring lecture, HORRIBLE study sections... too liberal to make an accurate point... biased class. Moderate tests, and use the study guides to do well on tests.
Fun yet very hard class. Take good notes and be ready to take take alot od quiz's and tests.
Most important:Pay attention in class. If you can absorbe everythng in class than the reading won't be so necessary. Pretty cool teacher. Gives unanounced quickwrites from time to time and before our holiday breaks. Pretty easy class.
He is very hard. Too many quizzes. That class is hard to sit in and even to write or take test. His tests are very hard. He is also very tricky. This class is easy for ***** people but not for ****** people.
Excellent teacher; pay attention and do the reading (it's interesting stuff, anyway). The quiz sections suck sometimes, but the lectures are great. One of the best professors at the school.

Great teacher! He uses relavent examples in todays society to make sense of the past. Any teacher who can name drop the Dead Boys in a lecture about 1970's punk culture gets an A++ in my book.
The best professor I had at Chico State. Taught me what really happened in our nation's history.
Great lectures! I ususally have a tough time sitting in a lecture hall but he made it interesting and funny! Weekly quizes on reading material, not hard if you read the small amount each week! Exams were based mostly on lecture and partly on reading material. This is a required GE course so I definitely reccommend taking Dr. Livingston for it!
I took several class from him, and enjoyed them all. One of the better teachers at Chico State. He really has his S**t together and is well prepared for his lectures. Subject matter is always good and he is really insightful. Wants to hear from students in class. Speak up in class and make your feelings known, as long as they make sense and are well founded, it will benifit you. Is open to hear opposing views or opinions. Need to do the reading, but it is usually worth it. Great professor!
Such a great class. He's only teaching one more semester though. Take HIST 101 from him! It was a new perspective on history for me. Go to class, study your notes, do some of the reading and your set.
His class is very interesting.
Outstanding teacher. Organized, dedicated, conscientious. He expects college-level work. You will do a lot of writing. Keep up with the reading. One of the best professors I've ever had.
A real down-to-earth guy with true working class roots. A "people's historian." Knowledgable, enthusiastic, and well-prepared, and he expects the same from his students.
The lectures were interesting. He expects you to read A LOT but if you do the reading then you'll most likey get an A or B.
I LOVED the class!! it is a LOT of reading - very time-consuming, but super interesting! im keeping the book just because i want to read it again someday in the future! Before this class i knew nothing really about history, in one semester i learned soo much! Livingston makes it lively and super interesting - great teacher!
Unpretentious, flexible, with high expectations. You will do a LOT of reading and writing, but it is worthwhile. Definitely have others proofread your writing, as he is very picky on grammar and spelling, but in a nice way. His focus is on the 1970's, and the texts are good. He's one of my top 3 favorite professors at Chico State.
Excellent teacher. Some freshmen are intimidated by amount of reading and overall intensity of the class. But this was a great GE class--I'm a chemistry major and was told Livingston is the only guy for History 130. They were right. A good looking man for someone my dad's age!!
I can't remember the title of the class that I took with Prof. Livingston but I didn't really like him because I thought he was kind of a jerk. He tries to trick you on quizzes and tests, and he is a very critical grader on papers. I like him much better as my advisor than as my teacher but he still intimidates me a lot.
Livingston is a pleasure to listen to during class. He is real with his students, as well as open and honest with his opinions.
Easy, fun, interesting class. The lectures were great - Livingston is the man. I wasn't too fond of the group discussions though... too many freshman whining about having to read a chapter a week. Overall, great class. Read the book, and sit back and enjoy the lectures.
Livingston is a fantastic teacher. I was not looking forward to taking basic U.S. history at the start of the semester. By the time of the final, I was so glad I got to take this class with Livingston, he really puts history in an understandable and relatable perspective.
He is an AMAZING teacher!!! Class is very interesting and tests are fair.
I really enjoyed this class. His lectures were extremely interesting and tests and quizzes were fair. I highly recommend him to everyone. Best history class I've every taken.
One of my favorite professors! He managed to engross me in material that I had previously found unbearable.
do what you're supposed to do and you should pass. professor is a really cool guy, you just gotta read and pay attention to the lectures. no papers or anything in his class. basically, just quizzes and tests
Excellent teacher. Knows his stuff. Friendly with students but doesn't try to be best buddy like some profs. Has opinions but not overbearing and likes to hear what students think. Good looking, too.
ALWAYS go to class on FRIDAYS! he gives 4 pop quizes and you get 20 points of credit for just being there for the quiz (just pure points for attendence). find a friend and split up the study guides for the reading quizes (seriously there long so split them up!). GO to his office hours, he likes you better i you show you care. It's a mediumhard clas
His lectures were well thought out and interesting. He did go a little overboard on grading one page write-ups, but he wanted to make sure we were not BS ing our way trough it. Good professor
Good lectures and good textbook. However, tests and quizzes were way too difficult compared to the depth of lectures. He also graded one page papers too harsh. From what I could see, most people in my section did not do well in the class. Livingston is a good teacher, but be ready to read a lot and retain what you've read.
Very good teacher and cares about the class. Easy text-Its called don't know much about history and it can hardly be called a text. he gives 4 easy "quizzes" for the students that show up to class, all you have to do is write something down. quizzes are straight from reading and the study guides. Easiest college class so far.
Very good teacher, definitly knows what he is talking about. Definitly go to his class though, because his tests are almost based on his lectures. If you go to class, read over your notes a lot, and do the weekly reading questions, you should do fine in this class. Take him, he makes history interesting!
Such a great professor! Exams are based almost soely on lectures so go to class. His lectures are very entertaining and he makes everything really clear. Quizzes are from the text so make sure to read! This class is very straight forward, he does not try to trick you and he is very fair. I've always struggled with history and i walked out with a B!
Hey, This guy really knows what he's talkin about. Simple class, group quizes, lecture Exams (lectures are powerpoint). He's one hell of a funny liberal! I like history now! Great lecturer.
Really great teacher, knows what he is talking about.
Awesome Teacher, knows what he is talking about. Amazing class, but you have to be willing to work. Exams are based mainly on lecture so you have to go to class and quizzes are based solely on reading. The book isn't bad because it's not like a real textbook. Definitely take this professor!
Very good teacher. I really liked him a lot - he is a funny guy who made history tolerable. The class is straightforward and pretty easy to follow
Dr. Livingston is pretty laid back and friendly. Not a dictator in class, he clearly enjoys discussion and interacts with his students without being condescending to different views. I recommend him.
Returned to school last year and had him - easy, light as air and not a good historian. Tries hard to be a pal to the students but belongs in a high school history class, not a college.
Great teacher, really liked how he engaged everyone. Not your average history class. Highly encourage you to take his class
If you have an opinion unlike his be warned. He will tell you way to much about his days as a druggie, and false information on historic events. The class is extremely boring, but you have to go. Read the book otherwise you will be lost on the tests. Anything you learned in another history class will be thrown out the window.
I ALWAYS went to class, did all of the reading, and did all of the study guides. I feel like he tries too hard to ensure that the people who don't go to class fail, that he even makes it too hard for students who attend everyday. His tests do not match up to his study guides. I loved the subject but hated his teaching-or actually lack of teaching.
You must go to class! There is 3 exams 2 writing assignments and a lot of quizes. The quizes are based on a book that you have to ready every 2 weeks. His Final was pretty hard. Its 33% of your grade so you must study! He words his finals really weird, like "According to the professor...." and one or more of the listed answs. Overall a eh teacher.
I took this class to meet the GE requirement and was pleasantly surprised. Attend all the lectures, read, complete the study guides, and you will receive an A. He is an amazing guy and loves his job and genuinely cares about students. I HIGHLY recommend him!!!
Livingston is an amazing professor and person. His lectures kept me interested.
Must keep up on reading and attend class. Test are based on lectures and assigned reading. Quizzes are based on assigned reading. Test and quiz questions are very confusing. The class is designed for history majors to pass and others to fail. I do not recommend taking this class.
Not the easiest History 130 professor but a very good one. You do have to read and you do have to attend regularly but you will actually learn American history. Interesting, funny, smart guy. And his blue eyes are to die for.
VERY difficult exams, worded very weird. You must spend a good amount of your time studying. Lots of reading out of the textbook, but do it because the quizzes are somewhat difficult too. Long story short, class is made for history majors to pass and GE students to struggle. VERY DIFFICULT PROFESSOR.
This class is honestly not that hard, you just have to be ready to read 2 to 3 chapters every two weeks ish. And you must go to class because 100% of the tests are based on the lectures, so it is needed if you want an A.
He is a reall college professor who knows tons of history and loves teaching. He is not easy but it is college. Shows sides of American history that you don't get in high school. He demands respect from students but has a great sense of humer.
Very good professor. Three test including final. He lets you take group quizzes from time to time. very easy if you READ!!!!!! stay on top of your reading and study for quizzes and you will do fine.
He is a great teacher, I just wish he didnt just grade so much on tests. I'm not a good test taker but a great student, and history is my best subject, and I got to say my confidence broke a little taking this class, because of the tests
This class requires a lot of reading, if you don't read you won't pass. The lectures really don't connect with the reading material or the quizzes at all. He has interesting lectures and really loves his job and teaching history, but he isn't a very good teacher.
Compared to my friends history teachers, this one is the most laid back. Exams are mostly on lecture material, he does not take attendance although there are pop quizzes which you basically get credit for for being in class that day. The in class quizzes are group on the reading material only. Great teacher for history 130. Only 2 papers max 2pgs!
I love everything about this class. Livingston really cares about his students and if you really want a good grade in his class, he's going to make you work for it. There is a lot of reading from a book that has weird hard to read text but if you do the study questions, you will do well. Overall I really enjoy this class.
History in general is not an interesting subject to me so my opinion may be bias. There is very heavy reading material that is quizzed on about every other week and midterms and finals are based of lectures. He is laid back and cracks jokes but other than than he is not helpful one on one. He is a true college professor meant for history majors.
I personally do not like history, but he is an interesting professor. Reading is required if you want to pass the quizzes and he does give out a study guide for each chapter. Test are mainly based off the lectures and has a few questions at the end from the book. He knows what he is talking about and tries to make the class enjoyable.
Great Guy! Makes history interesting with his lectures and personality. There are abt. 5 pop quizzes, however he gives you 100% for simply taking them. Reading quizzes he lets you take in groups. Need to buy the book, supposed to read entire thing. 3 exams, very lengthy. End of semester curves the class. Overall great great professor, recommend!!
This class was hard. You must attend lecture, he does post slides online but tests are based off of "his opinion of history". HUGE book you have to read to do well on quizzes. Not a textbook an actual reading book. Pop quizzes for free points and a few writing assignments but the tedts are extremely hard and worded TERRIBLY. Would not take again.
History 130 is tough at Chico in general, so i'd say Jeff is on the easier spectrum. Definitely NOT easy and you have to read your brains out, and lecture is a MUST if you want a chance at doing well at all. He isn't too personal/helpful one on one, but I think he really does care. DO the reading for quizzes, and study your lecture notes for tests.
There are quizzes every other week or so based off of the reading; simply answer the study questions and you'll do great! There are 2 exams based off the lectures- TAKE NOTES ON WHAT HE SAYS NOT JUST THE PRESENTATIONS!!! He has about 5 pop quizzes that are just there for attendance, if you complete them, you get 100%, they're usually on Fridays!
Very interesting professor always had my attention.
Jeff is an amazing lecturer. He is really into what he teaches and it shows. Make sure to take notes on the lectures because the notes are a lot more helpful than the book. Pop quizzes are occasional. The tests aren't easy, but if you study, you should be fine.
History has never been my thing but Livingstone made this class and subject enjoyable. He uses photos and videos instead of text to highlight points throughout American history. Some of the media he uses is pretty gory and violent. Awesome experience, days where attendance is low there will probably be a pop quiz (free points).
Livingston is one of the most straight forward Professors I have ever met. He makes it quite clear what he is expecting from his students, and if you do what the syllabus and grading criteria says you'll be fine. His writing intensive class was hard, but I am a much better writer because of his class.
Listen, Jeff is a great guy but even a typical A student like myself struggled to keep up with the whopping amounts of content we were tested on. The exams are unproportionally worth way too much. Simply put, this class was made as if students had no other classes to focus on. Unless you're willing to stress for nights on end, don't take it.
