Professor Marsh was a very knowledgable instructor, and gave great insight into the Book of Mormon. I still have notes from his class 5 years later.
Professor Marsh is brilliant and funny, and his class is the best!!
Amazing professor! He clearly loves to teach and loves the students. Very knowledgeable and entertaining. One of the few times I've looked forward all week to a lecture!
hands down the best lectures on religion i have ever listened to
One of the greatest teachers I have ever had. Any question he has helped direct and help me understand. Questions with quizes, give him a call and he'll help you out. Research paper was hard, but I learn a lot.
Brother Marsh is amazing. He's such a sincere teacher and definitely goes by the Spirit. He is fair and isn't out to kill. He doesn't make you go to class on test week and I seriously missed class! He's great!!!
fantastic professor who knows perfectly how to temper the spirit with humor, I nearly always left his class feeling the spirit and looked forward to days I had religion
he was a great teacher! i took him two semesters in a row for a class with two parts.
He was an awesome teacher. After the class I couldn't help but have the spirit follow me around for the rest of the day. The tests are pretty hard though.
This teacher was great! He is a SUPER nice guy. The test are hard though. I didn't really know what to study all the time. But overall, he is great!
He is a good teacher and very knowledgeable. The only thing is that his tests were very difficult and I am not a slacker either. I would study for so long and with groups and alone and I still wouldn't do that well. Good overall.
Brother Marsh is totally awesome! Lectures always kept me interested and he has great spiritually uplifting stories and experiences. Nice guy. He'll even invite students to have lunch with him! Knowing what to study can be difficult. If you read from the manual you should be fine.
TRICKY TESTS...misleading true and false questions. Portrays theories as accepted doctrine. Cuts off students thoughts, looking for "cookie-cutter" answers. Has an EGO
Amazing guy. I really don't think the tests were hard at all. Just do the readings. They are interesting anyways. He is truly amazing at lecturing though. I always felt the spirit and he gave amazing insights. HIGHLY recommended. His class is way easy compared to other religion professors.
If you can get one of his classes, GO FOR IT! Interesting and engaging lectures, easy tests and no quizzes, encourages you to do better in every aspect. He is also very willing to help with anything he can. Shows you the secrets to getting anywhere in school and life. A MUST TAKE TEACHER!
One of my favorite teachers ever!! Every class was like a spiritual high, and he had a lot of fun stories, and he's pretty funny too. If you can take a class from him, I HIGHLY reccommend it. It made me really look forward to going to Book of Mormon class every day.
What a waste of time... I felt like I was in Seminary everyday. I didn't learn anything new and he teaches his theories as if they were doctrine. If you want to be treated like a Freshman, take him.
This is what a religion class should be like! Very interesting and fun to listen to!
His theories aren't doctrine, but he tests on it like it is. I didn't appreciate what he taught or the way he taught it. He's nice, but never responds to emails.
Br. Marsh was one of my favorite teachers I've had here! His class was very very spiritually uplifting and I left edified and wanting to be better every time. He gave a lot of interesting insights on the gospel. Take his class! He is a very kind and inspiring teacher!
He's awesome. I don't know why he never responded to that other person's emails, but there were a couple times where I had a question for him after class, and he would tell me to e-nmail him and remind him of it, then send me a whole bunch of stuff from the scriptures and stuff to anwer my question. Very cool guy, really cares about the students.
One of the best teachers I have ever had, not just at BYU, but anywhere. Since we were all freshmen, he was really supportive of us and very helpful. His classes are very spiritually enlightening, I always learned something I really needed. Professor Marsh is a wonderful man.
This was quite a class. It was good and bad. The good, he had plenty of interesting things to say. We always started with a hymn. That bad, he taught things that are not necessarily true. He needs to give definite references with page numbers if he is to say things are fact. His tests are very tricky also, purposefully it seemed.
Great teacher. Really cares about the students. Provokes interesting discussions and adds insights. I always leave class feeling uplifted. His tests aren't to bad if you do the reading and go to class.
I really liked him. He gave new insight to things in the Book of Mormon which I've read and known my whole life. I would recommend him to anyone.
awesome and he teaches from the doctrine
I always came out of Brother Marsh's class wanting to be a better person. I learned more in one semester than my four years of seminary. Grades are based mainly on tests so study hard in the student manuel for them because sometimes his lecture don't go along with the test material but they DO go along with what you need to know for LIFE.
He is a great teacher! He loves the doctrine and he loves teaching and helping students understand. His tests are not difficult and he usually omits a few commonly-missed questions so you end up with a better grade. He's great!
I absolutely loved this class! I don't think I ever felt the Spirit so strong so many times in one hour. Dr. Marsh knows so much. He can just pull intersting facts and quotes out of thin air. I already had a testimony of Joseph Smith before the class started, but it has definately grown.
Best class I've taken at BYU! This is how a religion class should be. Too many teachers here focus on memorizing facts while Brother Marsh bases his lessons on stregnthening your testimony.
It is so important to go to this class! I thought it was really rough but I had a hard time making it to class. The one thing that really bothered me was that in the syllabus it basically said that if you were going to be late that you shouldn't come at all. A lot of times I didn't feel very welcome in class.
This class was amazing. I love Brother Marsh. He taught with such a strong spirit and really knew how to liken the scriptures to our lives. He made them interesting and easy to understand. He was also very open to discussing questions from the class.
Doctrinal Teachings of Joseph Smith. He makes class discussions lively and interesting.
Brother Marsh has a gift for teaching. Two of the most spritual, and educational religion classes that I have taken at BYU. He knows his stuff.
I love Bro. Marsh! Coolest teacher ever! Get to know him on a personal level and you will love him too! You have to study for his class, but it's not too hard. Take it from Marsh, he's the best!
Dr. Marsh is not a good professor. His tests are poorly written. He teaches speculation as if it's true. He is a nice person and he has interesting lectures, but he is extremely prideful. Some of his comments were so arrogant that I began to laugh out loud, but he was serious. Studying (very hard) for the tests can sometimes be a waste.
I love this man. The comments regarding ego are rediculous. He honestly cared about how I was doing and the spirit in the room was so strong at times. I dont know the exact doctrine, but I do know how I felt when attending his class and I wish I had it each day. He relates the Material to college life and understands what we're going through.
Awesome teacher, has a really good spirit in the classroom and gives interesting lectures. Half the time I wouldn't even want to take notes because listening to him was so enjoyable. He brings in relevant life experiences and doesn't really go on too many tangents..but if he does they're at least interesting and somewhat relevant.
Great teacher! I always look forward to going to his class. He has great stories and is very interesting. You will never sleep through this class! His tests are a little tricky though, but you'll do fine if you study
Marsh is an awesome teacher. All you have to do is pay attention to his lectures and skim the reading to get an A. You would have to have no sense of humor whatsoever to think that he was prideful and his comments serious. I took BofM 1&2 and RelC393 - the best class at BYU - from him. (A's in all 3) His lectures are amazing - spiritual & funny.
Excellent class! His lectures are always interesting. Some people are supposed to be teachers, and Dr. Marsh is one of them. I took 121 and 122 with him, and I would highly recommend it.
This is a great class to take for BoM 121 and 122. You have to do a lot of reading, but his lectures are fabulous and if you study the tests are reasonable.
Brother Marsh is an amazing BOM teacher. He is very knowledgable about the BOM and has great stories to go with it. His tests seems easy but sometimes you can be surprised at the grade you get on them. You may think the answers are obvious, but they aren't. Just take good notes, study them, and you will do well.
Brother Marsh is an amazing teacher. He really helps you apply the BOM teachings to our day. He really cares about his students and that they succeed. Go to class, read the excerps from the study guide, and you will be fine on the tests. Only a few assignments, which are very easy. I recommend his class to everyone!!
Really good teacher! If you attend class and take notes on everthing he says, you can easily get an A
Loved this class. He is a great teacher. I took one of his classes at education week instantly liked his teaching style. He really gets along with students and knows what we need help with. He really wants you to feel the spirit. There were only four tests all together and nothing else. Use the study guide he gives.
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith - great course, fun lectures, fair tests, and the guy even LOOKS like Joseph Smith! In all seriousness, I really liked the course, I really liked Brother Marsh, and I wish I wasn't graduating so I could take another class from him.
Bro. Marsh was an awesome professor! He was really funny, kept me awake and able to listen-even through 2nd Nephi-and was extremely helpful! The exams were not too hard, you do need to study though! I would definitely take a class from him.
Bro. Marsh was a very interesting teacher. I learned a lot from his BOM class, and as long as you actually do the readings and read the handbook, his tests are fairly straight forward. Pay attention to what he asks you to mark down in class, he specifies things for a reason. Funny guy--super nice!
Brother Marsh was so rad. His class was full of amazing stories, and applications. I enjoyed class, and thought it was pretty easy. Just go to class and take notes and the exams are cake. You won't have any idea what's going on if you don't go to class though.
I loved this class for BOM! He was such a great teacher and I learned a lot in his class. It was really easy as well. Just a really good class! By the way, he is an awsome silly teacher!
Bro. Marsh is the best! He's probably the best religion teacher at BYU. He has the perfect approach to a religion class, and encourages you to learn the gospel for yourself. I've had him for two classes and absolutely love the guy: I wish he taught more classes! He's easy but encourages *real* learning.
He is the best! I loved going to his class, he was so funny and great. You learn a ton too! Definitely a great preparation for the mission, and it's a lot of fun. The tests are pretty easy... if you study. You have to study, though, even though you think you know the BoM well.
I love Dr. Marsh! He really knows the Book of Mormon and I learned so much that I didn't know before. You can really feel the spirit in his class. He has awesome stories and makes everyone feel welcome and loved. Be sure to read the handouts he gives and study for the tests. I thought I knew the Book of Mormon well, but there's so much more!
Brother Marsh is too into himself. He cuts you off when you want to make a comment, so you never get to say what you want to say, and he doesn't answer your questions. He has a huge ego problem and thinks he's better than you as he talks down to you. If you don't get 100% on his tests (even if you miss just one), he points you out in class as "The only one not to get 100%." His tests are very unclear and tricky. He'll give you lots of possibile answers in class, then expect you to only choose one on the test. I got an A- because I studied my butt off, not because of him. Horrible teacher, don't take him.
Very interesting professor. Loved the class hated the tests. can't write tests for the life of him, poor guy. good luck if you're gonna take him.
Bro. Marsh is AWESOME! he knows the BOM so well. i love the way he teaches. he tells stories and points out the important verses in the scriptures. he keeps the discussions light but still manages to bring the spirit everytime. his tests werent bad as long as you read the manual and the handouts. he is really my fav. def takin another class from hi
Bro Marsh is a very kind and understanding teacher. He is very fair in his grading and is very concerned about his students doing well. He teaches by the spirit and uses interesting stories in class, I would highly recommend taking Book of Mormon from him. I took both halves from him.
Dr. MArsh has been the greastest professor that I've had at BYU. He cares about the students, and his teaching style is easy to understand. He cares so much and with a little study time an A is easy.
brother marsh is hands down the most AMAZING teacher i have ever had! he is absolutely hilarious and genuinely cares about his students. he goes out of his way to help and his class was by far my favorite. his tests are fair, if a lot of students miss the same question, he drops it. tells the most incredibly stories.DEFINATELY TAKE FROM HIM!
I thought he was kind of weird at first, but now I think he is funny and a good teacher.
Great teacher. Easy tests. Take good notes because the tests are completely based on lecture. Overall it is a fun and easy class.
I freakin' loved Brother Marsh! He's an amazing guy with great insights into the Book of Mormon. Also his tests are a piece of cake. All I ever did to study was re-read all the material once then took the test and got an A every time. Easy, and a wonderful class!
This guy is amazing!!! I learned so much about the BoM. He really cares about everyone, and wants us all to do well. If you go to class and read the material, you will have no problem getting an A.
Dr. Marsh was seriously my favorite teacher 1st semester freshman year...he helped me so much, and really did make a difference in not only how I looked at the BOM, but also in my life! He can relate everything in the BOM to some conference talk or something the prophet has said...he has it all memorized! haha...amazing teacher...awesome class!
This professor is amazing. He has such a fun view on the gospel and I learned so much. Tests are so easy, no assignments, no quizzes, it is a very easy A.
Marsh is a fantastic teacher! His lessons are very inspired, and he knows what he is doing. He knows how to TEACH. He is one of the best I've had. His tests are for the most part pretty easy. They're multiple choice, with some matching. The final exam is not comprehensive, which is really nice. I would like to take more classes from him!
Bro. Marsh is an awesome teacher. He truly knows the material he's teaching and he loves all of it. He is excellent at communicating the most confusing parts of the text and making it easy for others to understand. If you have the opportunity to take a course from Bro. Marsh do it. You wont regret it.
Loved this class. Great guy. Geniunely cares about his students. I love how he relates scripture stories to modern day. Had an awesome time with him. I wish I could take him next semester, but all of his classes filled up quickly.
I really enjoyed Bro. Marsh insight. Not only is his knowledge of the gospel impressive, but his ability to simplify the doctrine and teach it at an appropriate level proved extremely beneficial. Bro. Marsh teaches students how to view the "college experience" from an eternal perspective. Tests are fine as long as you read the BOM and the manual.
Lectures are extremely interesting, but he absolutely cannot write tests that reflect your knowledge. He makes the tests have 15 questions that are worth around 4 points each, plus the questions are completely drawn out of nowhere. Very frustrating. insightful class, but can screw your GPA.
Brother Marsh is so great! All his lessons are very spiritual and bring new insight I've never heard before. His tests are hard, but not to bad. You need to study a lot for the tests. He is so fantastic, I would take him, you just have to work pretty hard for an A.
Brother Marsh is a great teacher and class is enjoyable. Puts the Gospel in a perspective for our day. Literally no homework only tests. Tests can either be great or horrible. I should do great on them, but somehow get all tricked up. They are only about 25 questions but each is worth 5 points so miss a few and its over. Could tank my GPA.
I loved him! He's my favorite religion teacher. He's passionate about the BOM and really knows his stuff. He opened my eyes to the scriptures, and his class was truly life changing! He's inspiring and he's always telling you an inspirational way to make your life spiritual and better. As long as you study, you can get an A.He gives extra credit. He cares
Brought interesting new ideas and teachings to a topic learned from infancy.
Very, very hard tests, almost unfair. Don't be decieved by some comments -- this class is a GPA killer. Nice professor, very knowledgable, but bad for the GPA. In spite of some comments on this forum, I wouldn't expect to see many A's.
Great professor, not an easy A. Getting a B is doable with a small amount of effort but getting an "A" (not an A-) takes a good guesser and a butt-load of studying. Marsh is a good guy but his tests are ridiculous.
Bro. Marsh was a WONDERFUL teacher! He had great insights, always kept my interest, and taught me a lot! The class is somewhat hard, however. There aren't many grades--just 4 tests, really. (A few small assingments, but they don't account for much). Study a TON, and you'll probably get a 90% or below, unless you get lucky. But he does offer E.C.
He's a very nice guy, very funny. He's also extremely knowledgeable about the topic (Joseph Smith), which sometimes led to getting off topic, though it was always interesting. However, his tests are poorly written and each question is worth 5 points, which is stupid IMHO. He does offer extra credit, though. This was a good spring class.
If you are particularly worried about your G.P.A. DON'T take Book of Mormon from Marsh. His tests will DESTROY your G.P.A.
Brother Marsh is the best teacher ever for this course! His tests aren't hard and he drops questions that the majority of the class gets wrong. His lectures are very interesting and he's hilarious! His class isn't hard and he cares about his students. You learn a lot and he's a teacher that you know you can get an A in. I recommend him!
the tests are sketchy...
This professor really loves the gospel as well as his students. He makes learning in class for your future well-being a top priority; in other words, he doesn't test to much on what he covers in class, but he wants you to learn so you can grow. There are four tests that aren't too difficult if you study the student study guide. Much extra credit is offered.
I got one problem wrong on the first three tests, and I also got 30 points of extra credit. You be the judge. I liked him, but thought that he was very random. The tests were almost all based on the lectures. He drops questions that everybody missed which is way nice. He also cancels class a lot (5 times this semester).
This class wasn't hard if you read along with it, but if you don't do anything and try to rely upon your previous knowledge, you won't do good. Still a good class.
Marsh loves the Book of Mormon! He really knows his stuff. He has tons of stories that make the Book of Mormon more real. He teaches you more doctrines than story lines. His goal is to give you new study tools to pick out your own insights. His tests are easy if you go to class with a scripture marker and read the commentary in the student manual.
Brother Marsh is one of the best teachers I've ever had. You have to go to class but there isn't a reason why you wouldn't want to. He's really good at teaching with the spirit and picking out important things we should know. He is so invested in his students and really cares about them doing well, not just in his class but in life. Simply amazing!
Took BoM from him. He has some good stories, and he really knows the book of mormon and loves it. He gave a lot of extra credit early on, which turned out helpful because his tests were harder than expected. Take it from him if you want to learn about the book of mormon but not if you just want a gimme A. Plus his voice is pretty funny!
AWESOME CLASS! Brother Marsh's class was my favorite class by far. Everyday you learn something new and are spiritually uplifted. As long as you do the reading, go to class and read the highlighted areas in the student handbook an A is very possible. BROTHER MARSH IS THE BOMB WHEN IT COMES TO THE BOM
Professor Marsh is a great professor who is also very easy. I got A's on all of his tests as well as 100% (uncurved) on his final. The tests required studying, but this is college now, so just man up. He also gave out lots of extra credit.
INCONCEIVABLE! :)
love love love that class!!
This guy is my all-time favorite! I've had him for 3 separate classes, and he never gets old. I learned so much from him, and I didn't have to work my bum off. He's hilarious, nice, and organized. I left his class every day feeling the spirit and more motivated to be better.
Brother Marsh is amazing! He teaches you stuff that you'd never thought about before, and his stories are the best! The tests aren't that bad, and there's only a couple one-page papers, really easy stuff. I LOVED this class!
Easy class, but you still learn. He is hilarious and keeps things interesting.
Brother Marsh is HILARIOUS. His tests are easy, but you learn so much in his class. He keeps it very interesting and it is the highlight of my day. A great pick me up class while learning so much about the Book of Mormon! HIGHLY recommmend him!
Brother Marsh was not my cup of tea. I studied a lot for all of his tests and never got higher than a B, and I went to his office hours for help and he let his TA talk to me instead of him. A lot of people like him, but if you need visual aids like slides or writng on the board to learn, don't take from him!
Incredible teacher. Always teaches with the Spirit and has insights that are applicable to every day. I learned so much while in his class.
He is awesome! I learned so much. He understands college students and focuses on applying the scriptures in your life!
Book of Mormon and New Testament were awesome with him! Got a B in the first part, A in the second, and A- for New Testament. He acts as if the information he's telling you is brand new info. He gets really pumped with this stuff, and it's awesome. Read the hilighted verses and student manual stuff and you'll get an A. Take good notes as well.
Very interesting and funny. His study guides help you know exactly what to expect on the tests. If you take notes on the verses he covers in class and use the study guide, you will do well on tests. And no matter what, you will enjoy it because he is just so fun and inspirational!
I LOVE Brother Marsh. He is my favorite professor, by FAR at BYU. I felt the Spirit every single day, and he is HILARIOUS. If you're trying to decide who to take for BoM, take Marsh. Life-changing class and professor.
Dr. Marsh is an incredible human being. He is brilliant and teaches with great clarity. He invites a powerful spirit to the class every day, it's so beautiful. This class is easy, the tests are easy, but don't just blow off all the reading--it's worth it.
dr marsh is AWESOME! my favorite professor at BYU. take religion from him, it is amazing!! and really not too hard, just study the verses he makes you highlight and read the student manuel. i learned so much.. and he is SUCH a good teacher. he cares about his students and is always SO helpful. im sad to leave his class!
Bro. Marsh is probably one of the best teachers I've ever had! I highly highly highly recommend him.
this guy is awesome! i actually looked forward to his class, and i wish that i could take his class again next semester!
He is so sweet, and very funny. He is all about helping you
Funny, funny guy. I love going to class. He always has very interesting stories, somtimes I wonder if he makes them up because they are so awesome. I failed the first test (literally) because I didn't read anything. But I got high B's on the rest. He tells you what to know. Read the student manual, study some before the tests. He's great!
Dr. Marsh is the best professor I've had at BYU. I look forward to his lectures more than anything. He cares about what I learn and apply for my life RIGHT NOW. Very helpful, very insightful, very knowledgeable, and an extremely good teacher
Brother Marsh tells interesting stories that apply to the material instead of just talking about scriptures. The assignments aren't hard and neither are the tests, as long as you take good notes in class and study them.
Brother Marsh is my favorite. I am for sure taking more classes from him. He talks to students like they are his friends and he values all their opinions. It's way easy to pay attention in class because he makes the gospel so interesting.
Brother Marsh is a fantastic teacher. I looked forward to his class every single day. He has wonderful stories and insights that kept me interested the entire class. Tests are not hard at all if you study and do all the reading. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS!
What a great teacher to be teaching such an important subject! Bro. Marsh was fantastic. His stories kept everyone in class interested and laughing. Very spiritual, very knowledgeable man. Easily my favorite professor this semester. Read the chapters and you'll get an A. Tests are short and come straight from the Book of Mormon.
Great teacher. I love going to class and learning form him. He teaches doctrine and applies it to our lives, and is also spiritual. Really cares about students. I highly recommend taking this class from him. The work isnt bad as long as you do the readings and go to class.
Marsh is the best ever! He has a funny voice and I'm pretty sure Katy Perry was mentioned at least once a lecture usually in relation to Satan. He's super smart, and he is very funny. He does a good job balancing everything. Tests aren't bad, and its all doctrine based. Just go to class, read, and pay attention.
I see why people love Prof. Marsh, and I did like him. I especially enjoyed his practical advice for life. I would have appreciated if the class had been more academically challenging. If you want a more academic look at the BoM, this class should not be your choice. He did well on focusing on the doctrines though, which was appreciable.
Awesome teacher! Really cares about his students and is willing to help you if you have a problem. Tests range from average to difficult, I got a B on most of my tests. Study every day and you'll do even better! He's a great teacher!
He is an excellent teacher. He cares more about what you're learning than testing and getting good grades. I learned a ton in this class. The class is pretty easy. Just read the stuff out of the manual.
Brother Marsh knows his stuff! He's definitely the most entertaining and enthusiastic professor I've had. He makes class interesting and makes you really want to go. I'm definitely taking another class from him in the future. LOVE!
I decided to take another class from Bro. Marsh (first BofM then New Testament) and I found that I didn't like the class quite as much. His tests were surprisingly hard for me, but I know that others did excellent on them. I loved the lectures, though.
So, everyone loves him. Personally, I think he is arrogant and his jokes are stupid. He says he focuses on doctrine, but tests on tiny changes that JST makes to Bible that he doesn't even bring up in class. I'm sure he's a great guy, but not my cup of tea. Got a good grade, but tests were ridiculous, and I don't feel like I learned anything at all.
He is the greatest Book of Mormon teacher EVER! His tests are really easy if you go to class and read the material. There are no quizzes, the assignments included two 1-paragraph writings, and then a 1 page double spaced paper. Super easy! You learn a ton! and he understands the students, unlike so many other professors. definitely take from him!
Okay, everyone raves about Brother Marsh and he was a nice guy but I will never take a class from him again. We must have heard at least 3 times everyday during the semester how Katie Perry is evil and we shouldn't listen to her music. A nice guy, but his tests were incredibly difficult. The last test was really easy but the rest were difficult.
I read so many positive comments on here about Bro. Marsh, so I decided to take his class this semester. I was greatly disappointed. His exams were very objective, and on several questions there easily could have been more then one answer. It's like he was trying to trick us. I also found him to be incredibly condescending and extremely arrogant.
Lectures were entertaining and good, always mentions how Katy Perry songs are bad, very nice guy. tests honestly weren't that hard, except some were worded trickily and a bit confusing where you could go either way on a few but mainly the questions were pretty straight forward- if you did the reading in the manual and scriptures you're fine
I loved his lectures, but the tests killed me. Gives us a range of say 50 pages to study, and then takes questions from tiny JST changes. Basically I never felt like I knew what to study; I felt helpless. However he almost always takes off heavily-missed Qs. Managed an A- from 2 EC assignments and a few VERY easy writing assignments (1-2 sentences)
INCREDIBLE. I was either laughing my guts out everyday or having a special spiritual experience. Br. Marsh cares about his students and loves the gospel. His lectures are wonderful and as long as you do the extra reading (which are short and amazing) youll get an A. He offers extra too. Take from him, you wont regret it.
Brother Marsh's knowledge of the New Testament and the gospel in general always impressed me. Sometimes he makes bold statements regarding the deterioration of society, which made some people mad, but I knew he spoke the truth. For the tests, study what you covered in class and you will undoubtedly do well. I finished the first test in 5 minutes!!
I loved Brother Marsh's class! In some lessons, I laughed and then cried ten minutes later. I truly learned a lot from him. If you do the reading and pay attention in class, you will DEFINITELY do well in his class, easily. The only people who think his tests are tricky are the ones who didn't read or listen to the verses in lecture. He's great!
Take BoM from Bro. Marsh! He's amazing, the tests are pretty easy... just make sure you go to class. He knows a TON about the BoM and has lots of pretty good stories to tell. He likes to talk crud about Katy Perry a lot, too. Haha, awesome professor.
Brother Marsh is my absolute favorite. His lectures were seriously the best part of my week. He brings in such wonderful new and interesting insight. He teaches the scriptures doctrinally. You don't have to know trivial stuff. If you do the readings (which are good in themselves) you will do well in the class, and you will enjoy every part of it.
There isnt anything else to be said here that hasnt been said already. Such a great teacher. Don't attend BYU without taking him at least once.
Such an awesome teacher. So nice and so clear in his lectures. Really gives you an awesome eternal perspective. I came out of that class every time feeling exciting about life and motivated to be better. Also he does everything he can to make your life easier. Days off to take the test, tons of extra credit, drops questions from tests. Learn tons
Best professor ever! He not only teaches you about the Book of Mormon but also about life! It's so great! If you pay attention in class and take notes on what he covers you will get an A in his class no problem.
Get Brother Marsh! He is the best teacher I've ever had. His class was so amazing, and not just because he was teaching about the gospel. I always left class feeling like I could take on the world. Before you graduate, you must take a class from Brother Marsh.
I LOVE Brother Marsh!!!!! I've taken just about all of his classes and I wish he taught more!! He is so sweet and kind, and funny. Seriously his class is what got me out of bed on the days I did NOT want to go to school. I always made his class the very first class of my day, 9am, bright and "early". Completely started my day right every time. A+++
Bro. Marsh is wonderful. I definitely wouldn't have to attend lectures to get at least a B on the tests, but I do anyway because I love listening to him! Read the manual and go over verses he covers in class and the tests are cake. Definitely taking New Testament from him next semester.
This is the only class I had this semester I never even felt tempted to skip. I left every day feeling spiritually uplifted and ready to conquer everything else on my plate. I'm definitely taking Marsh again for New Testament. His tests are easy as long as you've read the chapters. Not much busy work, just incredible and spiritual lectures.
Brother Marsh is the GREATEST! I would absolutely recommend that every BYU student take from him at least once! SO GOOD!
Brother Marsh is an amazing guy. He likes to talk to his students and shows he cares. His classes are spiritually uplifting and motivating. Read the student manual and go over the scriptures you mark and you will do well! I recommend him to everyone.
Dr. Marsh is a very good professor. He brings the spirit to class everyday and his insights are amazing. He comes to class everyday with a smile and is ready to teach. Dr Marsh does an excellent job teaching. His stories are hilarious and his explanations of the scriptures are very insightful. I recommend Dr. Marsh Highly for RELA 122 (BoM part 2).
An amazing class! I took REL 121 and never wanted to have any other BOM professor. I switched around my entire schedule so I could take him again. He is a man of God :) He brings the spirit.
The lectures are amazing. He truly is an inspiring professor. The tests are not hard. He tests for your knowledge and understanding - there are no trick questions. Take his class! If you have any questions, he will answer them. He cares for each student.
He knows his stuff! Class is pretty much just him telling a bunch of stories, which he's really good at. The tests were deceptively hard, which kinda hurt my grade. They are multiple choice and not very many questions. I could have done without that. The essays are graded easy. One thing I didn't like was he cancelled a lot of class.
I loved this teacher and I love the way he teaches. I'm taking as many religion classes as possible from him. His lectures are interesting and tests are doctrine-based.
He really made the class interesting. If you don't miss class and study for the test you will pass with flying colors and learn your doctrine!
Very interesting professor. Has a lot of his own opinions. Tries to be a stand-up comedian for lectures. That was really frustrating. Tells a lot of useless stories. Just take good notes in class and regurgitate for his tests even if you don't agree with him on everything. Tests aren't very hard though. Test questions are VERY predictable.
Brother Marsh is amazing! I took his BoM class during Fall 2010 and came out of it thinking there was not a better Religion professor on the face of the earth. He has an incredible knowledge of the subject matter and is very passionate about it. His tests are very easy if you study for them. I'm taking him for D&C Fall 2011 and very very excited!
I love Professor Marsh! He is very helpful and kind. He truly wants his students to succeed and actually use what they learn in his class
He's such an amazing professor! Really knows how to make BOM super interesting. I felt the spirit so strongly today in class, and 'd say it's at a good difficulty level.
I took him because he had such great reviews, but he's personally not my type of religion teacher. I learned from quotes and prophets but not from the scriptures. He did pull concepts from the BOM but it wasn't from studying the pages. Every test I read the manual right before, took it within 12 minutes, and got an A. Didn't learn much.
He is one of the most insightful professors. For his class on the NT he created his own manual which really helped foster a great spiritual climate. He strengthened my testimony even more regarding Jesus Christ and his life.
He is an awesome religion teacher. His lectures are funny and interesting and his class is quite easy. The midterms and final aren't bad and there isn't a lot of reading or work. He also offers extra credit opportunities. I took BOM from him also and loved it. I learned a ton from both classes.
He has good reviews, but his class isn't my type. There's SOOO much scripture marking. Honestly, you'd be marking less by marking what he doesn't tell you to. He's a nice guy, but his lectures are so repetitive. Also, he really likes to implement his own opinions as doctrine.
You cannot leave BYU without taking a class from him. The Spirit is so strong when he teaches. The lectures leave you feeling completely renewed. His grading is fair, and the tests are exactly what you learn in class. I couldn't recommend him highly enough.
He's a very good teacher, lectures are interesting, and the class is very informative. He's the man.
Marsh is an excellent teacher. The ideal Book of Mormon class. You still get a taste of seminary because you learn A TON but the actual class is pretty easy to pass. Tests are easy to ace as long as you read the material and come to class. Funny teacher with advice for the real world as well. Learned a lot and got a good grade. Can't ask for more!
He is an extremely well educated man who enjoys spreading his knowledge. I definitly loved going to class and learning things I never had before about the New Testament. The tests can be quite challenging because I didn't know how to study for them, but I learned a lot. Totally recommend this class from Marsh.
His class is so frustrating. Most of his stories sound made up. He always tries to use Katy Perry songs as an example of how evil the world is. He makes Joseph Smith sound a lot dumber than he really was, just to prove that he COULDN'T have made up the Book of Mormon. He doesn't teach, he tries to convince. This class hurt my testimony.
He's nice, but he is really random with his stories. It sounds like he makes them up so we believe. He sounds like he's trying to convince us that Joseph Smith is mentally disabled to prove that he couldn't have made up the BOM. But he's still a cool guy and it's somewhat fun to go to his class.
I loved his class. It was very interesting. If you read the required readings
Great guy and awesome teacher. He really expressed how much he cares about his student's learning even though he has several hundred students a semester.
I love Bro. Marsh. Seriously one of the nicest, educated, down-to-earth professors here at BYU. Its not only his ability to teach, but also he fun stories and great advice that make the class super interesting. If you don't want to just read the BOM, but actually learn the doctrine and enjoy reading, then this is the professor to take it from.
Marsh is a really great guy and I loved going to class (though you can skip every now and again and still do fine). My only complaint would be that some of his test questions were really poorly worded, but he always dropped a few so no big deal. Overall, great professor who shows genuine interest in his students
His tests have nothing to do with what he teaches. If you have had experience with the BOM then you will do fine. His lectures are great and I am a better person after hearing them. If you want to really know the BOM, take from someone else. He teaches principles but doesn't really teach the BOM. Since studying doesn't help, guessing gets you an A.
I absolutely loved this class! Brother Marsh is amazing. I learned so much and enjoyed every minute. The tests aren't hard, you just have to adjust to his was of testing. I'm taking the next part of the class with him next semester.
LOOOOOVE him!!! He teaches strictly doctrine and strictly by the spirit. He has had some incredible experiences that he will share that will enhance your testimony and leave you in awe! He is such an inspired teacher and cares sincerely about his students. GET HIM
Some of his test questions are subjective, and your entire grade is based off of your exam grades; there were 2 or 3 10-point in-class assignments, but they don't really help your grade since tests are worth 100+ points each. If I had the choice to go back and do it over again, I would have chosen a different professor.
I loved Professor Marsh and loved his lectures. I left feeling uplifted every time. But his tests are tricky multiple choice. I got a 95, then 100, then 75, then 83. I got worse when I was actually caught up on the reading. I thought I had done well and was surprised at my bad grades. Loved him
Marsh is an awesome teacher. The class is low-stress and always interesting. He gives you a packet and tells you what to mark in class (must go to class). The only assignments are tests, which can be a little tricky. Just write down what he says about verses and you'll be ok. He gives some extra credit and curves the tests up!
Marsh is spiritual, funny, and an amazing teacher. Favorite one at BYU so far. VERY easy compared to other BoM teachers, tests are not hard if you go to class and write down the verses he talks about. He throws questions away on test (so its curved up). HIGHLY RECOMMEND for good, fair, BoM experience.
I loved that Marsh cared about his students, & made class intriguing and funny. There are only a handful (4 or 5) of exams that are worth all of your grade 25-30 questions each one). Even with studying the verses in class, I felt his test questions were kind of random, though not too difficult. He usually will drop Qs from each test. Recommend him!
Good lecturer who can really get to the point of doctrine quickly and clearly. My knowledge of the gospel grew a lot taking his class. If you do all the readings and ask yourself "what question will this [quote/verse/etc] answer?" you'll be prepared for his tests--which are your whole grade.
He's a great lecturer, but a terrible test writer. The questions are all opinion-based, so he takes his own ideas to be doctrine. All points come solely from tests, which sucked considering his ability to write comprehensible questions. Doesn't respond to emails and isn't afraid to put you to shame in front of the class.
Brother Marsh is the easiest and best Book of Mormon teacher! The tests are SO EASY I don't know what some people are saying. Like 2 days before the exam, I would just go through all the packet readings, verses, and manual readings, and I got A's on all of them! A super low-stress class. Highly recommended for Book of Mormon!
Terrible teacher. Requires reading far beyond necessary for his very specific short tests, isn't afraid to put any student to shame, and is very opinionated and it shows very prominently in his tests and lectures. Listening to his lectures is usually inspiring, but being tested on what he's teaching is impossible.
His class is entirely test-based. There are some in-class assignments, and if you miss those then your grade is brought down by a lot of points. The assignments can ONLY be done in class, so you can never miss class. Ever. Plus, he's biased, never responds to emails, and is no help when his tests come around.
He's my favorite professor I've ever had.
I thought Brother Marsh was a great teacher! So inspiring every class. Once I got a hang of his testing style, the class turned out to be great and so easy. He shows genuine interest in his students and I would definitely take from him again!
I enjoyed Brother Marsh's class so much that I was disappointed when he ended early almost every day. His classes are interesting and engaging but sometimes the tests are a bit nit-picky. Basically the only grades are tests. One bad grade will shoot your chances of getting an A.
At first I switched to Marsh because I heard that he was the easiest BOM teacher. I started going to his classes though, and found out that not only was his class easy, but it was incredible. This was my favorite class this semester because I learned a lot and actually felt inspired when I left the class. The tests were short and easy too.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE HYPE! Bro. Marsh is not as amazing as everyone says he is, trust me. His class is ENTIRELY test based, so if you do bad on a test, your grade is done for. His tests are also all trick questions. His lectures can be entertaining, but they are not helpful for his stupid tests. Good guy, terrible class set up.
He's absolutely incredible. nuff said. take any class from him. There's a reason why his classes fill up so fast.
Yeah, your grade is almost entirely test-based. But the tests are EASY!! All you have to do is read the student manual quotes he tells you to (which takes a total of like 3 hours, which I always just skimmed right before the test), and you'll get an A. Not only is it easy, but you learn and grow a lot! He gives extra credit opportunities too! A+++
Take any and all religion classes from Brother Marsh. Half the time, you laugh and then the other half you feel the Spirit so strongly. He has such a strong testimony and you learn so much.
Great religion class. Marsh is filled with great insights and uplifting stories. He is always so appreciative of his students. There are three midterms and a final. The tests have an occasional trick question, but are not hard for the most part. He adjusts each test if many missed a certain question. Take him if for an uplifting but relaxing class
Brother Marsh is a great teacher! He goes really fast, so you have to pay attention and keep on top of the readings. The tests aren't bad as long as you study. His class is really fun as he loves telling jokes, and I learned a lot of things about the gospel that I hadn't known before. Definitely take this class from him!
Very interesting lectures, good professor. Reading from the Book of Mormon and the student manual. I would recommend this class!
He's pretty funny, and keeps it very relevant to freshman life. You learn some great things about the Book of Mormon and have a good time doing it. Tests aren't too hard, but take good notes in a notebook and do all the readings twice before the test.
His tests are easy and take 15 minutes on average! Tests are your entire grade. Interesting teacher too!
Marsh is very easy. He makes a lot of funny jokes and is entertaining. Good teacher to take from all you have to do is do the readings once and then refresh before the test and you'll be fine.
I enjoyed this class. Brother Marsh is great. Attendance, though not taken, is important. I wrote key words or summary phrases next to reading assignments in the study guide, and it made reviewing before tests very fast! Tests were short, each about 15 min. I would take Brother Marsh again.
Bro Marsh was an excellent teacher. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he tries to teach you. He answers questions well and gives students the opportunity to talk and teach each other. The class was super easy, I definitely recommend taking a class from him.
Bro. Marsh is AMAZING! You can tell that when he teaches, he LOVES his students! He KNOWS what he is talking about in class and he is always willing to help out students. Go to every lecture; it'll help for tests. And don't even bother bringing any technology including laptops Don't try to be sneaky about it either. He'll call you out in class.
Interesting lecturer. He knows so much about the gospel. His tests have tricky, nit-picky questions on them, and you MUST GO TO CLASS if you want to pick up on all the nuances of what he'll test you on. Gives lots of extra credit. 7 out of 10.
Bro. Marsh is amazing. Not only are his lectures effective, but he really cares about his students. He really teaches on a personal level, and his class is a huge testimony builder.
If you go to class, pay attention, mark the scriptures he asks you to and read what he asks you to, you'll do well. He emphasizes things in class that come up on the test in some cases. Some other questions are easy, some are hard, but gives extra points on the test if he thinks a question was bad. Lectures are great.
Such a great professor. He's funny and keeps class interesting and as long as you go over the student manual and marked verses the tests aren't bad.
Test questions often cover material that has nothing to do with the gospel. He doesn't cover that material in class, either, so good luck on the tests. Attendance is a must for a good grade. His lectures are off and on, sometimes okay, sometimes not. I think he's overrated -- didn't really like him.
Dr. Marsh is so great! He has a ton of insight and his lectures are very interesting. As long as you go to class, and do the reading, you will be fine. Some questions on the tests are tricky, but he throws out any that are marked as hard from the testing center so its fair. Take Marsh, you will learn a ton!
If you want to take some of the hardest religion tests, then take this class! I wanted to talk to him about my grade, and he was unwilling. Elder Bednar taught that effective teachers create environments where students become agents who act, rather than objects to be acted upon... he did the latter. And most of his material was hearesay.
Dr. Marsh was a great professor. Class was always interesting. He doesn't allow laptops in class. There was a lot of homework besides reading which was super nice. No essays, and he gives extra credit options. His tests were only multiple choice, but sometimes the questions were a little tricky. Overall though it was a good class and he was great!
Brother Marsh is an exceptional teacher! Very easy to get a good grade! Plus he is so helpful. This class was a highlight to my semester!
Dr. Marsh was a great professor. Easy to get an A, if that's what you're looking for. I feel that we sped through the chapters pretty fast, and we only cover a fraction of it in lectures, the rest is on your own. Still a funny guy, a nice relaxing and enriching part of the day.
Brother Marsh is awesome!! His lectures are fun and spiritual. His readings are super uplifting and helpful in understanding gospel principles. This is the kind of class that has you less worrying about grades and releases you into your own world of soul-searching, self-discovery, and gospel enlightenment. There is no better person to take BoM.
This class is very easy for the most part, and I would recommend it to anybody that doesn't think very highly of religion classes. It was almost no work on my part, and the tests were fairly simple, although they were sometimes inconsistent with what was actually taught. He gives a lot of extra credit though, so this class was an easy, easy A.
Great teacher! I always loved going to his lectures! He has definitely been one of my favorite teachers so far. He is so funny! Just be aware that he does not tolerate any electronics in his classroom, so if you feel you must take notes w/ your laptop, I would suggest possibly taking the class from another teacher.
Dr. Marsh is an AMAZING professor. Knows a lot about what he is teaching. Makes class interesting. Tests are easy if you go through the student manual and packet after class. Attendence is mandatory, but class is interesting! TAKE THIS CLASS from Dr. Marsh! You'll learn a lot and have fun in the process!
Marsh is very excited about what he is teaching. The tests are pretty simple if you have done the reading. If you don't do well on a test, just do the extra credit and you will get an A.
I was so impressed with his class. I learned more in one week of his class than I did from my professor the semester before. He tells you what you need to mark and if you do the reading in the packet as well, you are set for the tests. He often lets you out of class early which is great and gives multiple extra credit opportunities. He's the best!
I did not learn very much in his class, but it's an easy A. Marsh is pretty funny and passionate about what he is teaching. Tests are a breeze if you attended class and studied his booklet. Attendance wasn't mandatory for my class.
Brother Marsh's class was interesting and semi-funny, but his tests had many off the wall and ridiculous questions that were unexpected from the readings. Test were essentially the entire grade for the class so this was frustrating. I enjoyed the class but wished that a religion class wouldn't give me this unrealistic a chance of getting an A
Brother Marsh is so passionate about the gospel, and he's hilarious which makes everything he says easy to remember. The tests are really easy as long as you go to class and brush up on the manual/reading before you go to take them. He offers a few extra credit opportunities over the semester. I'll definitely be taking another class with him.
I really enjoyed Dr. Marsh's class. He's funny and passionate. The class was pretty easy, but I still feel like I got a lot out of it. He also usually let us out of class early everyday.
By far one of the best classes at BYU. Bro Marsh is an AWESOME teacher and so into the subject. I learned so much about the Book of Mormon. He is really funny and getting an A in the class isn't very difficult. Read and go to the class and study for the test to do well! Take it from him!
Great class except you might feel unbalanced if you are a recent convert. 90% of the class thinks this class is supereasy except those converts. I was among one of them but I did just fine. Got B+ in this class after spending about 20 hours per week outside of class time.
I loved taking BOM from Dr. Marsh. I looked forward to class everyday. I think I liked it because I learned a lot spiritually as well. He inspired me to serve a mission. Also- he can be hilarious sometimes. Lots of religion professors think they know everything and aren't very humble-- NOT HIM.
Decent teacher. Not great, not bad. He analyzes the scriptures more as a historical document than as a source of testimony. Grade was based almost entirely on 3 tests, which were fairly easy, but it definitely adds to the stress level.
Love this guy! I learned so many amazing, cool things and I would try and write down everything I could because it was all so interesting! Loved this class.
Dr. Marsh in my favorite teacher! This class is my favorite too! I have read the Book of Mormon countless times, yet Dr. Marsh teaches me something new every time! He is funny and keeps you engaged in his lectures, but he is also very spiritual and can provide many new insights. I could not have a better professor for this class!!!
His classes really strengthened my testimony and helped me get out on a mission. Very interested in helping the students develop their testimonies. I would recommend him any day.
Really knows his stuff and had a fun and exciting time in class!
Bro. Marsh is awesome, but his teaching style in my opinion was confusing. Different tests are based on different things, such as one test will be straight from class slides (which you don't have access to online) and the next will be all on the manual. I like him but wasn't as blown away as a lot of the Marsh lovers are.
Professor Marsh is probably the most thorough religion professor I know. His lectures were so insightful. I gained a greater love for the Book of Mormon and a surprising amount of appreciation for how it came to be. Tests are difficult. You basically have to read over everything before (notes, scriptures, manual), but it's a worthwhile class.
If you're looking for a professor who knows the gospel to the letter, someone who will always give his "scholarly" opinion, this is your man. But if you want someone open to differing interpretations, who doesn't merely spew Mormon folklore as proven fact, pick someone else. The tests require studying, and the lectures are sometimes confusing
Phenomenal professor! I would take a class by him again in a heartbeat! The tests were more difficult than I was expecting but not impossible. I left every lecture feeling like I knew more about the BOM. Make sure to attend classes because he occasionally has an in-class assignment. It's always easy, but you have to be in class to get the points.
Dr. Marsh has a very unique teaching style, and if it doesn't work for you, there is nothing you can do about it. I did everything he told us to do, plus more. I tried asking him for help (not very approachable), I talked to his TA, and I continued to do poorly.
It is an enjoyable class and his lectures are decently interesting. He always gives you a class period to take the test or just study :) The homework is not bad at all, but make sure you do the readings. Tests are easy; what he says to study is exactly what's on the test. Tests usually take around 20-30 minutes, so overall not too bad.
His tests are very difficult. He also just tried to rush through his slides as fast as he could and then got us out of there early each day. I was very disappointed. This didn't feel like a religion class. Pick a different professor. My roommate had professor Largey, I wish I would have gotten him.
Many students do really well in his class, but I don't know how! I guess you just either click with his thought patterns or not. Sometimes he had insightful things to say, but too many other times he tries to pass of folklore and opinion as fact. Also no matter how hard I studied for his tests I was always unprepared. I just don't get it...
He is amazing! So funny and good natured, yet so intelligent! I learned a ton and it wasn't hard to get a good grade. Love this guy!
I thought this was going to be one of my easier classes, but no I was wrong. His tests are difficult he loves to throw in lots of true and false questions. And you must read EVERYTHING he tells you to read in order to prepare for tests, although that never did me any good no matter how many times I read everything :( He is a funny professor though!
Very interesting lectures but hard tests. Very tricky. Throws in lots of confusing questions where multiple answers are correct but you must select the "most correct" answer. He told us that the final would be comprehensive over chapters 11-14 and it had questions from the whole semester on it! Must read everything and attend all classes. G'luck
If you understand how Dr. Marsh thinks and how he writes his tests, this will probably be the easiest religion class you ever take. If not, this will be a one of the most frustrating religion classes you ever take. Grades are based almost entirely on tests. Test questions come from lecture (so take notes!). Great lecturer.
Dr. Marsh lectures well. I actually enjoyed unplugging and listening to lecture. Tests are poorly written. Marsh's issue is that he verges on overbearing. If a student asks a challenging question, he sometimes bulldozes over it with a generalized, sweeping answer. Assignment load is nil. Good man, Great lecturer, bad listener. Tests suck.
Everyone seems to love Marsh, but I wasn't a fan. He's very focused on "proving" the BoM true because of how "ridiculous" naysayers are, instead of using evidences to provide insight. It's possible to get an A if you go to class and FORM STUDY GROUPS. Combining notes helps get all the arcane details you'll miss-SOMEONE was bound to write it down.
Dr. Marsh is a nice guy. However I wasn't to impressed with his class overall. We didn't even study the scriptures at all, just the course packet which he wrote. There are never any assignments, just tests and the tests are tricky. If you think like he does, then you'll be fine. If not, then you're probably better off with another professor.
Disappointed with this class. I took a class from Marsh before and got a 98. This semester I ended up with an 83. Lowest grade I've received at BYU. He didn't seem super interested in helping students. Just referred us to the TA who wasn't helpful at all. Grade is completely from test scores and tests can be tricky. Don't recommend him.
He has entertaining lectures, although for a BoM professor I felt like he was kind of loud. Anything thing from the assigned readings or from lectures are fair game on the tests.
I enjoyed his class pretty well, but because he has such a large class, his interaction with students on a personal level is very apathetic.
The class is fine and he is an interesting teacher but he is the most unhelpful teacher I have had at BYU. He doesn't care about his students at all and is extremely rude. I would never take his class again or recommend it to anyone.
Brother Marsh rushes through each class, telling you to mark like every other scripture we talk about. It's way too fast to learn anything and we just study the course packet. He also makes jokes, which are sometimes funny, and sometimes over the line. He seems too aggressive in proving the BoM. Non-mormons would be freaked out.
IT IS HARD TO MAKE AN "A" IN THIS CLASS. I spent about 10-15 hours a week studying for this class and i barely finished with an A. Unfortunately, if you bomb one test you're grade is going to suffer because 95% of your grade is based solely off tests, which is kind of ridiculous. A religion class shouldn't be this hard, take from another prof.
Taken 1 test so far & it was very easy. Fair grader. However, he goes way too far with his jokes. Very rude & everybody just laughs along as he hates on those who don't believe. Totally one-sided. Agree with him or you're wrong. Ridiculous. I go to class happy & leave very frustrated & upset. Decent teacher, but not at all an understanding person.
Legit the worst class I have ever taken at BYU. Marsh is a nice guy but a horrible professor. His book is a compilation of articles pasted right from the internet (Unit 1 is the entire JST Wikipedia Article), he quotes himself, makes painful jokes, prohibits the use of all electronics during class, & makes me want to avoid religion classes again.
Marsh is a fine individual, but I really struggled to get anything out of his class. He is like a new Professor (Randy) Bott; semi-charismatic but full of his own doctrine.
Very rude and condescending when you try and talk with him. Treats you like you are in HS again (no electronics at all or else you get called out in his class in front of everyone). Don't bother going to class, his lectures are a waste and he just spouts his own interpretation of the scriptures. Just read the materials and take the test, get an A.
This guy must need to retire or stick to research. Rude and impatient with students. Rushes through class as if he hates teaching. Treats you like you are a little kid (no electronics in class and says multiple times to not "text" about the test after you take it). He has also said multiple times that students will be judged for online reviews, lol
It's so bad...
Easily the worst professor I have ever had at BYU. If you want respect don't take from Marsh. I don't do these reviews, but this class definitely deserves one.
This class was pretty simple! Honestly, you didn't even have to attend class, just study the course packet. I never really did the assigned readings; I went through the scriptures at my own pace. He can be irritating, trying to be cool, but I took him for REL122 as well, for the easy A.
Holy information batman! this guy knows his stuff inside and out and can out spirit the best of them!!! However, the problem is he's teaching for RMs mostly and anyone else can just be left in the dust. He doesn't allow any electronic devices to help take notes and doesn't give you the slides. you have 4 books to study from for all exams.
Hmmm. I took BoM from Marsh cause I heard really good things about him, but I was disappointed. The classes were all super crowded and the tests were often nitpicky. I would not take another religion class from him.
Dr. Marsh is amazing. He really knows the JST backwards and forwards, and teaches very clearly. Really sweet, funny guy with great stories about the JST and the Apostles. The best religion class I have ever taken, and I would take it again. You learn so much about the JST and develop a love for it. Take this class and take it from Dr. Marsh.
Honestly, all i have to say is that i didn't go to class the past 3 months and i got a 92% on the final. It's a joke. Some of the questions are flat out ridiculous. He is a nice guy and all, but the class isn't set up well.
Great class! FYI, he makes it super clear from day one, NO ELECTRONICS and if you arent willing to abide by that then dont take the class. Also deadlines are deadlines, no late work. All of that means grow up and be responsible and get the work done early, and youll have no problems. He is very willing to help but you need to talk to him in advance
So easy, but if you want to actually learn something that will be helpful to your testimony I suggest taking someone who helps you to interact and learn doctrine. This guy essentially lectures the entire class and only spouts off really deep doctrine that isn't relevant to anything. Class is super boring and there is no interaction.
HANDS DOWN FAVORITE CLASS from my Freshman Fall semester. Marsh rocks. Go to class; there will be sporadic in class assignments and quizzes. He's a shot of pure entertainment when learning about the BOM. Test comment comes straight out of Course Packet and his lectures. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING THAT COMES OUT OF HIS MOUTH! If you do...You'll excel.
Ok I went in expecting this great class because I''d only ever heard great reviews. False. I guess maybe he''s not my style I just feel like he tries to teach things as doctrine when they''re more like Mormon myth and kind of acts like If you don''t agree with me then you''re obviously wrong. I guess I wish he''d have focused more on the scriptures.
Professor Jeff Marsh is a wonderful religions teacher. I had him for Book of Mormon part one and now I'm taking New Testament from him. The lectures are inspirational and hold the spirit while he also throws in funny jokes and experiences. There's a bit of reading but it's worth it for the insite Brother Marsh provides.
If you want to actually learn something, choose a different teacher. Marsh is absolutely the worst religion teacher in the school. Sprouts off about obscure references and facts while just showing slides covered in texts. What's worse is he doesn't allow any electronics whatsoever in class, so it's almost impossible to take notes. Also, he
last one, I swear awkwardly laugh to get on his goodside, while he smiled his weird, sneering smile. In all, you shouldn't even bother going to class and just study from the student manual, you'll do fine. If you really want to learn about the Book of Mormon, please, pleeeease take it from another teacher it'll be much more enjoyable and easy.
First class he comes off as pretty annoying, but he's not bad. I've enjoyed him! He gives nice lessons (although honestly missing a few has not hurt my scores) and the tests are clear and straightforward. Just make sure to read the packet and student manual! He's also really good about offering extra credit if you're into that. And no busy work!
Super smart and entertaining guy. Study the course packet before the test and you will do good. Gives plenty of extra credit. Easy A
I LOVED Book of Mormon with Dr. Marsh. His lectures are amazing and I learned so much! He doesn't have any assignments or essays or anything and his tests are super easy. Just go to class and you'll do fine! I would definitely recommend Dr. Marsh.
If you're a non-member, do not take this course from him. He means well, but his manner of speaking could be offensive or confusing. Members and non-members alike: Its not that taking it from him is bad, its that taking it from someone else could be life-changing (instead of slightly entertaining and an easy work load).
I really liked Dr. Marsh's teaching style; he brings the spirit in the classroom. Rules: (1) No electronics, period. (2)Tests are closed book, closed notes. I loved his lectures, but your grade is solely determined on your test score. I found his tests to be ridiculous. Some of his questions are so easy and some even RM's can't answer without BOM.
I LOVED Dr. Marsh. He brought an amazing spirit into the class and makes you feel like you are of the greatest generation in the world! He strengthened my testimony and my knowledge of the book of mormon more than anybody else has and I am so grateful for him. Take his class!!!!!!
If you do the assigned readings (which really aren't bad, I promise!) you will pass easily.
Professor Marsh was pretty offensive in his manner of speaking sometimes, but overall he knew a lot about the gospel. This class was SO EASY I can't even put it into words. I never once attended class and I just reviewed the study guide before the tests and it was a breeze. There are no assignments, just 4 exams. Easiest religion class ever.
I LOVE BROTHER MARSH. I took him for Book of Mormon AND Joseph Smith translation of the Bible. He is amazing. SO funny. His class is easy, and if you pay attention to the lectures you wont have a problem passing his tests. Also, he likes to let class out early sometimes.
TAKE A CLASS FROM BROTHER MARSH. I learned more from him in one semester than I learned in almost any other religion class. He knows SO much about the gospel and if you get the chance to pick his brain, do it. He knows students are busy, so the homework and tests are cake. But I still remember everything I learned in his class. No regrets.
This class is new at BYU so they are still trying to figure out the best way to teach it. Brother Marsh is amazing and has taught me so much I didn't know about the Restoration, and it is actually interesting. The tests are easy (most people got an A) and he does little extra credit assignments like taking a picture at the church history museum.
He's the man. So good in lectures ant the test were not hard, if you paid attention
I absolutely loved taking from Dr. Marsh. He is funny, smart, and genuinely cares about his students success. Just make sure that you pay attention to what he tells you to study in class, and you'll do great.
While his intentions are good, I hated this class. I know for a fact people in my class left the church because of how he taught. I hated that if you asked for clarification he would say "read my book." NOTHING is posted online because hes worried people are gonna copy his stuff. Its the easiest class on earth, but hes pretty offensive.
Such good lectures. This is the second class I've taken from Dr. Marsh and I would definitely take more. His tests are extremely easy and he really focuses on you getting a lot out of the lectures. Take his classes and pay attention in class cause he will blow your mind!
Seemed indifferent and dismissive of questions or comments. Had some strong and offensive opinions that were not doctrine based. Material is clearly conveyed in the reading, though. Definitely not a hard class, easy enough if you just do the reading. Tests are easy. But I would much rather take a hard class from someone who cares.
