I'd definitely recommend taking Genetics from Maughn. He really cares about his students and the material. He does his best to make sure that everyone understands the concepts. He is a great guy. The tests aren't bad as long as you do the practice test problems and go to the review sessions.

Dr. Maughan was great. He seemed to make time for students' questions, and spent enough time explaining for the student to understand.

I really enjoyed this class and this professor. Dr. Maughan does a really good job explaining difficult material in a way that everyone can understand. His lectures were always interesting too. I would highly recommend him. You can tell he really cares about the students.

Dr. Maughan is a great teacher and a much more dynamic lecturer than Coleman (who substituted once). Although teaching from the same material and using the same tests, our class had a higher average on every test than Coleman's class. I highly recommend this teacher and loved this class.

Dr. Maughan was a great teacher. A lot of students complained about the tests, but they just didn't prepare enough for them. Go to the reviews, don't expect the questions to be exactly same as those in the book or in review materials. Just understand the principles and you'll be good. He's a great professor.

Our class did much better than Coleman's. He did a good job in lecture. He could be a little more understanding when it comes to personal issues, grading etc. Also we got behind, which made it difficult to do the homework on time. It left you all of a day to get it done, and you are out of luck if you were busy that day. Tests weren't that bad.

This was my favorite class last semester, Dr. Maughn teaches with clarity and grades extremely fairly. All of his exams are open book so memorizing everything isn't as important as nailing the concepts. Problems on exams and homework can be tough. He is a funny guy, likes to joke about himself a lot (he's color blind). Enthusiastic teacher.

Dr. Maughan is great. If you attend class and do your reading it is pretty clear. The only reason to do badly in this class, if you are studying, is if your brain just can't handle data analysis. If that is the case you shouldn't go into biology or healthcare.

It was an easy class for me, but don't get complacent. Dr. Maughn is a great teacher, but I got a high grade while sleeping through most of his class. You just need to remember to give yourself more than two hours to take his tests.

Maughan is a good lecturer. If you pay attention he can really help you understand difficult principles. Jellen substituted for a day and he didn't make any sense at all. If you have to take PWS 340 take it from Maughan. Tests are a little tricky but doable if you go to the reviews and do your homework.

Class is really interesting, well-organized, and fun. He is really good at explaining difficult concepts and answering questions. The tests and HW are difficult, but certainly not impossible-it is an upper level science course. Everything is open note/open book. Youll be successful if you understand the concepts and have good problem solving skills

Best class I ever took. Genetics is so interesting, and Maughn does a good job teaching it. Material can be tricky, but lots of practice problems and help are available.

I struggled with this class. Not because he made it impossible or overwhelming, but I had a hard time grasping the concepts. It ought to be more than 2 credits. Do not underestimate the tests...the final took me over 4 hours. He is great though. Funny, smart, and helpful.

Great class and Dr. Maughan's lectures are quite enjoyable. The class is organized to facilitate problem-solving. As long as you stay on top of the lectures and understand the homework and practice problems you should be fine.

Dr. Maughan is a great professor! Very approachable and funny; he's a great lecturer and cares about his students. Genetics is difficult, the tests are heavily weighted, but if you go to class and always get help with homework from the TAs an A is possible! Be prepared for long tests though.

Dr. Maughan is awesome! His lectures are really funny. At the same time, they are very informative and clear. Maughan is great at answering questions. He has the same homework and tests as Coleman. Tests are closed book now and can be hard if you don't understand concepts on the HW. There is no curve (your end % is your grade). Take from Maughan!

I really loved Dr. Maughan! He was a very engaging professor that made the class very interesting. If you are good at word games and problem solving, this class will be a breeze. I honestly spent a total of 15 hours max the whole semester on hw, review sessions and studying for the tests. The only reason to get the book is for the tests.

I really enjoyed Dr. Maughan's genetics class. His lectures are entertaining and informative. The class requires a lot of problem solving which can be challenging but Dr. Maughan helps students work through the problems.

Really a great teacher, and highly recommended for genetics. He keeps you engaged in lecture, and I felt I was legitimately tested on what we covered in class and on hmwks(not obscure stuff he never went over). Highly recommended to print the slides. Workload was consistent with credit number.

Prof Maughan is the man! Lectures are more entertaining than the other teachers and he does a good job of keeping the class engaged. Assignments are weekly and tests are open note (3.5hr time limit). I just printed out all the slides and took my notes on them and brought that into the testing center. 1010 would recommend.

Dr. Maughan is an excellent lecturer. He presents the information in a very clear way. Anything that's graded is clear cut too. It's all multiple choice, including the tests. If you can problem solve well, this class will be easy. Tests are open book, open note, so you don't have to memorize things too much. Overall, great teacher.

Dr. Maughan is hilarious. Genetics can be a dry subject, but I really enjoyed his lectures. There are no surprises with his tests. He tests you on very similar problems that he discusses in class and that are assigned for homework. Practice is required, but an A isn't too far out of reach with Dr. Maughan. Take Maughan! Dr. Maughan is fairly clear during lectures. Don't bother buying the book. Expect to spend maybe a half an hour studying each day to do well. Tests are open-book, but that doesn't mean they're easy. The wording of the questions can be confusing so read carefully. I'd recommend this teacher.

Jeff Maughan was honestly one of the best teachers I have had in a while. He teaches what you need in an entertaining way, loves it, and makes you love it too.

Dr. Maughan's philosophy: "Dont read the book, just come to class and let ME teach you." That's how it should be. He gives you all the resources you need to do well: homework helps, slides, TAs, office hours and tests you on the stuff he teaches you. Amazing how that works. Dont buy the text book, just print off his slides and take notes on them.

Open-book tests. Tricky questions as a result, but Jeff is a clear teacher, he's funny, he's engaging and genetics is such an applicable subject. Weekly homeworks are great resources. do them without TA help and you're ready for the exam. Very little time necessary to get a good grade.

Dr. Maughan was a great class. I wasn't super excited for the class but I learned so much and the things that I learned in genetics are helping me in my other classes.

Professor Maughan is great! His lecture's are always entertaining and he always takes the time to explain concepts. There are 10 homework quizzes, each with 10 questions. There are 3 exams, each with about 25 questions. The questions aren't hard, as long as you read through all the text and figure out what they are asking you. Definitely recommend!

maughan is 10X better than coleman. class is so structured its crazy. you will learn alot in lecture. this class is an easy A if youre a dedicated student. lots of kids get 100s of tests. dont buy the book its literally useless for the entire class (and im the type that always does my reading for classes). very enjoyable and applicable to life

Honestly probably the best science class that I've taken at BYU. I've never had a teacher explain things so clearly. The man is a legend. We had Dr. Coleman teach our class for the last week because Dr. Maughan was lecturing in Asia. Let's just say I'd recommend Maughan. Dr. Coleman is great too, but I just liked Maughan's style better.

Dr. Maughan is the coolest man to walk the face of the planet. I am fully convinced that there is not a single person more helpful and wonderful than him. I wake up every morning wishing that I could sit in genetics class for 16 hours, come home after, sleep, and repeat. Don't miss the opportunity to take this class from him. He's the man!!

This was my favorite class i have taken so far. Not only is Dr. Maughan an amazing teacher, able to explain difficult concepts so that even a child could understand, he also has the most interesting lectures. I learned the coolest stuff in this class. He is also super funny. If you take this, get ready for a class that you look forward to going to.

My only knock against the class (not him) is that you can't get any more than 2 or 3 wrong on each test in order to get an A in the class. Take your entire allotted time for the final. This genetics class is easily my favorite class I have ever taken at BYU. The material is super fascinating and Dr. Maughan is soo good at teaching it. On the first day of class he said we didn't need to read the textbook because he would teach us everything we needed to know in class. And then he did just that! Tests are straightforward and unambiguous. He's a hilarious lecturer. Take this class from Maughan!!

Dr. Maughan is a great professor. He is hilarious and his class is never boring. I didn't think the class was too difficult, but some people struggled, especially if you don't attend the lectures, or don't pay attention. Doing the homework and extra work problems on LS is key to pass the class. Definitely, do the homework in a study group gold.

Your grade consists of 10 10-question hw assignments, 2 midterms, and a final. He will replace the grade of your lower midterm with the final exam score if it is better! There aren't many opportunities for points, so be sure to get a study group to work on hw together. Make sure to work through in-class problems before exams too - they really help!

Dr. Maughan teaching style is the best Ive ever had. He covers everything on tests in class and does lots of practice problems. I would recommend him every time. The only drawback is that there are few points available and doing bad on a test can cost you.

Entertaining, clear, accessible, and helpful. Teaches difficult concepts well, and gives lots of practice problems to help you get ready for the test. Lets you any sort of notes/book/calculator, etc. for the tests, so you don't need to memorize anything - just make sure you can figure out the problems before you get in the testing center.

I feel like its not that hard of a class but the exam questions are meant to be a little tricky since you can bring any materials with you into the exam. You cant miss much and expect to get an A. There are not many points other than exams.

Dr. Maughan is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. He is kind and understanding with people who don't understand concepts, but more importantly knows how to teach the structure and kind of thinking necessary to perform well. He integrates interesting case studies and stories to make the concepts more relative and more interesting. Not only is it an easy A, it's a joy.

Dr. Maughan is very passionate about genetics and makes the lectures interesting. He uses real-life examples which makes the material applicable. The class is huge and he's taught it for years, so he is very no-nonsense. The lectures are crucial to understanding the homework. The tests are very hard and there are a lot of "trick" questions.

The three exams you take are worth 80% of your entire grade, so that is a little overwhelming. He is willing to meet with students and sit down one-on-one and go over your test. Great teacher, funny guy. Teaches clearly and you can buy all of his slides bound in a book for $15 instead of buying the $140+ textbook. Plenty of examples given in class for homework and test problems, tests are representative of what's covered, worth a strong majority of the grade but only three.

Dr. Maughan has a way of making the most boring informative seem interesting. He is funny and excellent at explaining things. This class is super tough, but he at least keeps you entertained the entire time. Phenomenal teacher and easy to learn from. His tests are pretty difficult so make sure you go to his office hours.

One of my favorite professors at the university. His lectures are engaging, useful, and funny. The tests were very reflective of what he taught and similar to the assignments, so it just felt like a fair class overall. Difficult, but no surprises.

I took this class during COVID. The lectures are recorded, which is great because you can pause or speed them up. Professor Maughan is really good at making what you learn fascinating. He's does example problems and explains them well. I rarely felt lost in this class. Tests are most of your grade. Overall, would recommend.

I took this class online, on-demand. I came to his office hours once but that was my only direct interaction with him. He is super open on what is expected, tests are totally doable (open book, baby!) and keeps the lectures interesting enough. Great guy, plus his name is Jeff.

My favorite part about this class was the lack of busy work. There was one homework assignment a week that gave you just enough practice to understand the material. Dr. Maughan did a great job explaining things in his lectures. Tests were open book, open note, but they were really more about application so you still have to know what you're doing.

Very clear grading. Open note, open book. If you watch the lectures and really pay attention, you can easily get 100% on all the homework. TA and office hours are always open too. Very test heavy, but he replaces the lowest midterm with your final. Tests mastery, not memorization. A tough course, but definitely doable.

Dr. Maughan does a really great job lecturing and going over how to do all of the problems. There are lots of practice problems that he provides to help you get the material. That being said tests are 80% of your grade. There are so few grade in the grade book that tests are the only thing reflected in your grade.

Dr. Maughan is a good guy but his class is SO HARD. Hardest college class I have ever taken 3 years into my biology degree. Tests are 88% of your grade. I failed the first two but pulled through on the final. Skip in-person lectures and watch the online ones so you can go at a pace that is easier to follow. Find a study group and befriend a TA.

Very nice guy, he cares a lot about his students. Only grade are the 2 midterms and finals. You can bring notes on the test but that just means the tests are that much harder. And longer. You must get the booklet to take notes in, it's a life saver. Pay attention and maybe bring some caffeine to class. Do not buy the textbook - it is not necessary.

Tests are open book/note - he has created a booklet of all his slides that you can take (along with any notes you write in the margins) into the testing center with you. He provides lots of practice problems and is great at giving interesting, real world examples in class. He's very approachable.

Fantastic post-bacc friendly professor. Students could attend any section. Clear policies & excellent communication, lectures, practice questions & previous lecture videos(!) Lectures were respectful of those with biological differences. Course grade is mainly exams, which were challenging & require fully understanding how to apply the material.

I got a 48% on the first exam and a 96% on the second: I redid every single lecture and homework problem multiple times before the exams and went to TA sections more frequently. Open-book tests just meant that you have to understand every single concept before going to the testing center, or you're going to panic, doing this should be an easy A.

I loved Professor Maughan and his lectures. He is super informative and hilarious! I will say that three tests determine your whole grade. I got two Bs and one A so I got a B as a final grade. The textbook readings are optional and tests are open notes, but they can be tricky.

Dr. Maughan is the best. Funny, engaging lectures and he helps to explain topics really clearly with great example problems. Tests are all open-note but are require you to know the material WELL before you go into the test. One weekly homework assignment that helps you to practice skills. Exams very similar to homeworks/powerpoint practice.

Professor Maughan was really smart and passionate about genetics. I felt like I learned a lot during his class, however, I do not believe my learning and effort was accurately portrayed in my grade or tests. 80% of the grade comes from a few tests that are 25 MC questions. I worked extremely hard in his class & in the end tests controlled my grade.

So exams were 80% of the grade, but I love the way he directs this class. His slides are the best resource for lectures, studying, and exams, (I would recommend using sticky notes to organize topics!). Maughn is SO funny, so genuine, and a fantastic professor. I would 100% take his class again.

He is a stud. I aced two of the three tests in the course. How: Buy the packet of slides that are offered at the beginning of the course, follow along during the lectures, and before each test make sure you actually understand the concept behind each practice problem in the slides and practice each at least once, do that you will ace the tests.

Dr. Maughan is a great teacher. His tests are open note. So, if you buy the slides packet and make sure you can do every problem in it, you will be fine. Watching the videos online and doing practice problems with him are very helpful! The hardest part of this class is the fact the tests are only 20 questions and are a huge part of your grade.

Concepts aren't difficult, only graded on 10 HW assignments and 3 exams so ensure you study well for those. Good professor, highly recommend you attend class and buy the slides packet. As many have said, tests are open note, but just make sure you know the material before going into the test.

Dr. Maughan is a great professor and amazing at explaining complex topics! It's not an easy class to say the least, so I cannot stress this enough: Go to EVERY lecture! Pay attention! And study his slides, redoing every practice problem in them for the exam because you will see very similar material on the exam! Loved this class and professor!!

You may not find a better professor at BYU. He understands the student's needs and meets them. Saying that, it still is hard and I feel like he made the final extra hard since we did better than he expected on the second midterm. The only thing on your grade is two midterms, a final, and 10 homework so if you don't do well on exams good luck.

Go to lectures. He explains the material very clearly. The subjects are actually pretty easy, and he even drops one of the two midterms. Do not rely heavily on the lecture notes while inside the testing center, I recommend making a study guide prior to going in so that it is a quick reference. Do practice questions. I got a 99%, and you can too.

Dr. Maughan is a great teacher, but the class is still super difficult, especially the tests. The TA's are super helpful for the homeworks and understanding difficult concepts. The lower midterm is replaced with the final exam grade if you score higher.

GO TO CLASS. His lectures are excellent and he is good about teaching you what you need to know for tests, and also how to think through problems. I made the mistake of skipping class towards the end and it cost me my grade a bit!

Pro Maughan does such a great job teaching some of the hardest topics. You only have 10 assignments through the semester and 80% of your grade are the exams so that is rough when you're not the best test taker. I enjoyed his lectures so much and to me all the content was very interesting. You'll get a good great as long as you push yourself.

This is a brutally difficult class. Dr Maughn is a great teacher and lecturer, and he is also extremely fair and the grading is straightforward and very, very difficult. Furthermore, the final will replace your lowest test, but the final was unfortunately my lowest test. The slides are all you need, focus on the take home and in class problems.

Dr. Maughan is a great professor! He is equally funny as he is engaging. With that being said, the class itself is not easy. The class is very test heavy, accounting for about 80% of your grade. Just do the practice problems, and you'll do fine! Also Dr. Maughan recorded lecture slides if you ever miss or need a review, which is very helpful!

Make sure to go to lectures. No need to read the book, just listen and try to understand how the problems work during lectures. All I did to prepare for test was study the slides and try every problems in the slides. If you can answer them all, then you are in good shape. Got high scores this way. The test is very similar to what we do in class.
