Be aware that the tests are not always like homework.
I really like Professor McClean and his class! The class moves at a nice pace, and the workload is very manageable. Most people in the class had never used R before; however, he does a very good job at teaching the basics. If you want to get really good at regression and R (which is important for anyone STEM), I would definitely take 455 with him!
The homework and tests make up your entire grade. Homework is fairly easy as he will help you go through it during office hours if you need help. Tests are essentially what was on the homework with different data sets. He doesn't focus too heavily on the theory, preferring to help you understand the output from your R code.
Jeff is a great lecturer and a very solid choice for 455. Lectures were clear and concise, something not too common in the STOR department. Assignments emphasized coding in R and applying concepts to do real data analysis, which felt useful. Exams aren't too tricky, but require clear knowledge of concepts since there is a definite time crunch.
Look I'm going to it real with y'all! The homework is so so easy, but the exams ARE SO DIFFICULT FOR NO APPARENT REASON! He contradicts him self frequently and when given projects he does not have a clear, concise concrete idea in mind on what he wanted. Gave no extra credit at all.
Homework seemed easy, but the exams were completely different and very complicated. Gave no extra credit, office hours were pointless. He gave projects with no criteria and then just threw out random grades. He teaches units and uses software that is completely different from the other STOR 155 classes so don't expect to get help from friends.
Dr. McLean, in my opinion, is a great professor. The class made me want to take more statistic courses. However, his tests are difficult, but you can have note sheets with you during the tests. For the final exam, you can have up to four note sheets. The group projects' criteria are vague, but they are not too difficult.
McLean is great at explaining concepts and a really nice guy. I've never liked statistics before, but I found this class pretty interesting and useful. He focuses on software rather than doing anything tedious by hand. Homework is easy, group projects are a bit vague but not too hard, and tests are straightforward if you come to class.
Prof McLean is a great professor as he explains the concept very well and the workload over the course is manageable. Also, he will teach how to use software to do all the calculate stuff which is more helpful than other STOR 155 class. However, you should attend the class regularly as the tests will have many question explained in class.
He's a great lecturer and overall the class is very manageable. His homework is pretty straightforward and he'll do his best to help out. Tests are like the homework so not very much theory based. Easy to miss points if you don't actually understand the course material though. Was able to skip half his classes and keep up with online class notes
This dude just stands in front of the class and rambles on about his terribly unorganized powerpoints. This class was so difficult that I decided to withdrawal from University and go work on the coal mines. Steady pay and I don't have to deal with R-studio. No regrets on my end.
I am a star major student, and he is one of the worst lecturers I've ever seen. He just reads the slides which are unorganized and useless. The only thing we do in class is typing or copying the codes that we don't understand since he never explain how they work. The grading criteria are very unclear and confused, he does not give homework answers
The tests were just like the homework. You can use all notes and powerpoints during the tests. Three written homework assignments, and then 2 weekly easy online assignments.
stor151 with mclean is a MUST. it is so so easy, practically got 100s on all my exams without studying and he lets you all the resources you want on the exams. He is always helpful during office hours and his exams were just like the homework. No curveballs and overall an amazing professor. Attendance in his class was not mandatory and no one came.
McLean is a wonderful professor. It's almost all lecturing, but he is good at it. When a student had a question, he would answer thoroughly and make sure they understood. Biggest of all, he cares about YOU. He raised my grade significantly on an exam a TA had graded and gave us answers to a homework that was poorly phrased. Great guy.
A bit unclear during lectures, switching the class to be more code-heavy. Mainly just shows examples, so if that's how you learn. Weekly online assignments with multiple attempts, rare written hw. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you show up, you'll do better hearing him talk than just looking at slides. Ready to answer dumb questions
This was the easiest class I took at Carolina. Tests were open everything except each other and they were just like the homework so you can get an A without even studying. Attendance isn't mandatory and he puts everything up on Sakai. Prof. McLean is also just a nice and caring guy so highly recommend his class.
He's an amazing person. Sometimes you don't want to go to class, but it is needed so that you can get the codes to do everything. Super easy to understand. Stay organized in your code notebook, and just plug and chug on the exam (which are open note). He is an amazing person, and regrades test when TAs graded unfairly!
Easy class. Show up to class, complete the homework which doesn't take long, and organize all of your code in your R notebook so you can just plug things in on the exams. Exams were open note/internet and required little studying if you showed up to class and kept all of your R code organized. Only bad thing: very easy to lose a lot of points.
The exams are very much like the homework and are open note. However, lecture slides are extremely unclear, and paying attention in class doesn't help much either since most of it is watching him code.
McLean is a great lecturer and very helpful in office hours. His homework assignments may be tedious at times but they are great ways to prep for his exams. Make sure to go to class though because his slides are purposefully ambiguous to ensure students show up to class and pay attention.
mclean is great. he taught me linear reg and logistic reg, both of which are important and interesting. would recommend try harding mclean's 455, its worth it. learned how to use R effectively, though i wish mclean would use tidyverse, because it makes using R a lot cleaner and more satisfying. also, he has pretty great datasets and fair tests
Dr. McLean is an awesome professor! I highly recommend taking STOR151 with him if you can. The class is super easy and goes by quickly. He is always available after class for questions. Also, everything is open note so tests are a breeze. We used a coding system in his class so I recommend keeping a section in a notebook just for codes. 10/10!!!!!
Professor McLean is a great professor. The class is fairly easy, all tests and quizzes are open note. A coding system is used in the class, make sure to keep up with all codes. Highly recommend.
Prof. McLean is pretty solid. All of the exams are open note and he is very clear with his rubrics and what he expects out of homework assignments. Sometimes I found him going a little too fast and having the expectation that we had some knowledge about R already. However, he is very helpful in office hours and before/after class if you need help.
Don't treat this class like an easy A - put in the work from the beginning and you'll thank yourself. Do not take those open-book open-note exams likely - you need to know the material really well if you want to finish on time. I really appreciate what I learned from this class - it'll definitely be useful in the future!
easy to follow, even as a non-stem major. his lectures are clear and detailed, and as long as you pay attention you'll be fine. exams are open note and internet, but a little lengthy so don't get too comfy. coding is needed, but i've never coded before and it was super easy to do it's not scary.
McLean is a great 455 professor. He posts videos with course content, which is a shame bc he seems like a great guy to know. Regardless, his HW is doable as long as you give yourself more than a day, and the exams are extremely rushed but not that hard. I feel like I've learned 3 semesters worth of material in 2 months with McLean.
Professor McLean is incredibly skilled and teaches Data Science in such an accessible, understandable, and inspiring way. The topics, the way they're taught, the Jupyter Notebooks - I love everything! This is one of the best decisions I've EVER made in my life to take this class and I don't think there's anyone anywhere who can teach this better.
The character limit doesn't do enough justice to how great Prof. McLean's been this semester. 455 can be intimidating to those who haven't programmed in R, but the class is VERY straightforward, he is VERY accessible and understanding. Homeworks vary in length, exams a bit rushed, but he makes everything VERY feasible to do. (TAKE THIS CLASS)
Despite being an asynchronous online class, I thought Prof. McLean did a great job teaching this class. The homework assignments are reasonable but are graded moderately harshly. The designs of the group projects were pretty confusing at times. Exams and quizzes were often timed, which made them very hard to complete in the set amount of time.
Professor McLean was a great professor overall. His lecture videos were great. If I were to give some criticism, it would be that homework and lab questions could be vague sometimes. Usually the questions were pretty clear. The workload is very manageable and the pacing is great.
If you take him for an introductory course like STOR 120, he understands and assumes that you may have no programming experience and takes the perfect amount of time teaching you the basics without making you feel like you're stupid. He does a review before each of his tests which really helps and he makes himself easily available.
Your grade in this class is determined by labs, projects, homework, and exams. These assignments are not difficult if you watch the class lectures and fill in the notebooks that go along with those lectures. Overall I really loved this class (and I came in with ZERO coding experience).
Very understanding about covid. Made the last test, quiz, and final 24 hours and did not change the difficulty. All tests and quizzes are open notes, he always responded to my emails quickly, understanding of tech issues, posted lectures on time. The group assignments were a little confusing, but he was always easy to contact for any questions
The course content is easy. Great lecture. You don't need to know the underlying reason behind the computation, just following the examples, which is both a good and a bad thing. The exams and hws only test your knowledge on the surface level, but you may struggle once you enroll in advanced statistic classes without fully understanding the theory.
Prof has assigned loads of work for "Wellness Weekends," and has previously poked fun at the fact that he's assigned too much. Just found out that he pulls most of his assignments from the internet. Weekly homework and labs that take long times, projects and midterms every few weeks. I feel like I never get to breathe in this class.
Prof McLean is a star!! He taught python so well and made the class very engaging even though it was asynchronous. Some of the coding was hard but he is accessible and so are the TAs. McLean is the only reason I am surviving my current stats class I couldnt do it without him. He gave a strong foundation in 120. This class with McLean is a must!
McLean is competent, organized and helpful in office hours. I like McLean. But I hate STOR 120. Heavy heavy workload (3 projects, 12 hws, 10+ labs, 14 quizzes), doing stats calculations "the long way" in python, half the class getting 70 or below on in-class midterm 2, work over wellness breaks. Run!! If you do take 120 use data8 midterms to study.
McLean was very helpful and kind the entire semester. Near finals he even made class asynchronous to give us more fluidity. Understanding some concepts (p-value, confidence intervals) was confusing, but he tried to help as much as possible. He wants you to do good, and unless you put in no effort, you should do just fine. Majoring in comp sci now!
Prof. McLean is a helpful, considerate professor. Seems to be a cool guy & has a nice beard. There is a good amount of work to do & midterm 2 was rough. The final exam was much better than the midterms. I feel like I learned a lot from this class & am now considering the new data science minor.
Prof McLean is a great teacher and so helpful outside of class. However be warned that it is A LOT of work. I never felt like I could take a breath with the course load of this class which led to me burning out at the end of the semester. He has very detailed lectures and lab examples, so don't be scared, but you definitely have to put in the work.
The class is based entirely on your TA and their grading, so it is a risk. Homework was often graded after the exam or quiz, which was hard when you needed interpretation of things. The class is a lot of homework that is usually pretty manageable, but you definitely have to be prepared for it to take up a lot of your time.
Overall I liked Professor Mclean. His lectures consist of copying code that he types in front of you as he explains it. While this may not work for some people, I didn't mind it. You have 1 lab assignment, 1 hw assignment, and 1 lab quiz per week. Overall the workload isn't too bad compared to other stem courses. All work/exams are open notes/web.
Overall the class isn't hard, topics on tests and quizzes are gone over in class. You just have to pay attention and not blindly write down whatever code Prof. McLean is writing down. Homework is graded after you take your assessments which sucks. I really liked that he recorded class sessions and was very kind to students asking for help.
Professor McLean is overall a great person and professor but this class is essentially a computer science course and I struggled to take this course online without having any previous knowledge of coding. Just be ready to put in a lot of work and know that this is not a traditional statistics course.
Be ready to pay attention in lectures and take side-notes. Professor McLean is very quick to respond to emails outside of class and is willing to answer questions. Don't leave the work to the last minute.
Professor McLean is a solid teacher as he knows very well what exactly he is teaching. However, the amount of homework given is almost brutal. There is rarely a break from the homework you are given. And he didn't curve one of the midterms even though over half the class failed the in class portion so be warned.
Wonderful class and introduction to data science! Jeff McLean is a great professor who is very lenient with grading. I missed many lab quizzes and still ended up with an A. I learned so much from this class, and I am glad I took it. I am looking into a career in data science now.
Professor McLean is great, his office hours are super helpful and he is pretty clear about what you need to know. All the tests and quizzes are open note, but they are far easier if you actually study/practice beforehand. While they are slow to grade the homeworks, if you ask he will always put up an answer key.
Pretty easy but you learn a lot which is awesome. Great guy, let me reschedule a midterm when I got sick asf
Jeff was a great professor and was accommodating and flexible during the semester. You learn a lot of things and he is very fair about grading. As long as you watch the lectures / show up and focus on learning, the course will be fine for you
Though it was challenging, I learned so much in this class. He expected us to have no coding background so he taught us from square one then taught us how to apply it to statistics. Class consists of coding along with him on a template similar to the homework and lab where you will apply the knowledge. Find people to do homework with and TAs help.
Ridiculous amount of assignments, stacked together, with concepts you have to apply while never seeing an example like it
I loved Jeff!! His lectures were so interesting as he used fun examples for us to apply our data analysis skills.
Not for beginners. McLean says that you should be able to take the class without coding experience, but you will definitely need to have some sort of coding background to follow along in this class. He made lessons accessible, but they are hard to follow along because they aren't labeled. So much homework and labs to do in the class.
Professor Mclean is amazing with lecture material, his slides are very helpful and he helps you practice your knowledge of the class by doing code in class with him every lecture. Midterms were two parts, one being take home and the other being in class which was slightly more difficult but worth less than the take home portion.
Dr. McLean was a great lecturer and the course content is very interesting. While this is a beginner-level course, he covers a lot of useful advanced material in a fairly intuitive and easy-to-understand way. The coding portions of the class are actually much easier to understand than the actual statistics.
The class was basically come in, write code for 50 minutes then leave. Professor Mclean doesn't really do any teaching. This class does have a lot of work as you are assigned a Lab and an HW each week to complete. Midterm 1, easy. Midterm 2, extremely hard, got a 61. But, lots of assignments and percentages make up for bad grades. Be ready to work
Professor McLean was a great professor who was very caring. Midterms are only worth 5%, so he doesn't want exams to sink your grade. Overall, great experience.
Prof McLean is very organized and straightforward, however it seems a misjudgment to say this class is for beginners. If you have background in coding, you will be absolutley fine. However if you don't have basic stat knowledge prior to taking this class it would be very difficult. Homework is constant, weekly labs and hw graded for accuracy.
Lab attendance is required every week. The class was very interesting, although he can be a bit monotone at times. His entire class is scripted (like he actually reads a script). Tests are very similar to HW and lab work. Overall a very good class.
This guy taught nothing during lectures but copying and pasting code. He just told the class what he is doing rn but not the reason behind those codes. hw is not too heavy, but there are so many exams. quizzes and exams are given the same time limit but the exams are having much more and harder questions than those on quizzes. hws are just fine.
Super Chill guy. Makes data analytics easy to digest.
He stands at the front of the room and copy-pastes pre-written code. Moves pretty fast and doesn't give a good explanation as to why he does anything in R. Grading rubrics are often unclear; tests are long and have difficult questions. Hard for people who are new to R. Has Piazza but never replies and is slow to release answer keys.
extremely useful and applicable course material. take time to listen in lectures/read and there is clear reason behind the things he does; he always explains intuitively the purpose/logic behind code. lectures can be a little dull but they make sense. fair exams and grading (everything in previous lecs/hws). great choice for 455 and any others/120
Professor's lectures are very straightforward and he makes things very clear. There are a lot of things to do assignment wise but they aren't too time consuming and help you keep a good grade so a few mishaps don't bring you down. If you don't understand things, he directly uses the textbook so just take time to read and understand it.
Dont know where those good rating came from. taken 120 and 455 from him, basically doing nothing but copy and paste pre written codes for 50 minutes. 3 quiz and 2 mt, quiz 2 result in a hilarious distribution where the curve is overall flat and downward sloping lol, hate this website for not allowing picture upload, really want you guys to see.
McLean is very knowledgeable about the material and it is very applicable to anything. The midterm and quiz questions were sometimes worded weirdly and became confusing compared to the hw and lectures. His lectures are rly detailed and you need to pay attention in class so that you don't miss important details. Overall a good class to take.
This class is really hard for someone with no coding experience; wish I had taken COMP 110 first. Pay attention to homework and go to office hours for help. Everything is graded for accuracy so try your hardest on homework and labs! They help a lot with the exams. Just follow lectures and understand the content as best as you can as you'll be fine.
Prof McLean is extremely organized and records every single lecture while also posting all necessary materials used in class. As someone who gets caught in the cycle of skipping class, this was a bit dangerous. However, as long as you attend class/watch lectures later and complete homework assignments this class is very manageable.
Professor McLean was the best professor I have encountered in UNC's statistics department. Attendance in lectures is optional as professional Mclean uploads live recordings following class, however, I have found that frequent attendance significantly helps on the exams, as it can be difficult playing catch up. Overall a very manageable course
Very clear lectures, and the homework, group projects, quizzes, midterms, and the final were all understandable and easy as long as you come to class and pay attention.
Professor McLean is great. He makes STOR120 really easy to pass and do well on as exams are open note/internet and much of your grade is homework and lab assignments that are easy if you pay attention in class. He also posts lecture recordings so you can easily catch up if you miss class. If you can take STOR120 with McLean, DO IT!
I didn't HATE this class, but I dreaded lectures because he literally just talks at you for the full block. The lectures drag, and he doesn't always explain what he's doing or why he's doing it so it can be easy to get lost. BEWARE of the in class midterms, they're only worth 5% of your grade each but everyone bombs them.
Dr. McClean is really knowledgable and makes the content very digestible. Open book quizzes/tests but you really need to understand the material to do well because you only have 50 minutes on them. Also helps to read the textbook before class and do the suggested exercises. Probably one of the best stats profs I've had!
Not too difficult, great intro to R. Mclean is great, very helpful. Class is not too bad, homeworks take time but not too much. Middle of the road STEM class in time it takes up. Overall one of easier STOR courses.
Prof. McLean was very knowledgeable and passed on the concepts really well, but the class structure was definitely an issue. We never had enough time on the tests and quizzes, and it felt like he was testing our R skills instead of understanding of class material. He forces you to apply your learning at a deep level, which is helpful. Good luck!
Professor Mclean does assign a lot of hw but if you do the hw you do not need to study for the exams since the hw covers everything you need to know. The exams are manageable if you put in the work (unfortunately I slacked off for this class don't be like me!)Overall, great prof, managable class if you are ready to put in a bit of effort !
The lectures were a little boring, but if you went to lecture, it made the homework super manageable. All tests and quizzes were open note and open book so nothing was ever super difficult. He recorded and posted most, if not all of is his lectures which was really helpful when doing some of the homework assignments in case you missed anything.
Dr. McLean is definitely the most organized professor I've had during my time at UNC. You can always find what you should know and what you should be doing. Some of the exams were a bit tricky, in terms of asking for niche concepts that were either briefly covered or require an amount of intuition that might seem random. Great content to learn tho!
Good professor, lots of homework/lab assignments. Midterms were open note but still kinda hard. If you work hard, you can easily get an A!
Very organized, the class was nothing special but was very straightforward. McLean gives clear lectures and is happy to help students outside of class. If you can, take this class with a friend or make friends. Coding is easier with more people's input!
He was a super hard and slow grader. The final felt designed for ppl to fail. Decent class but very mid from the final
Overall a nice guy and decent professor. A ton of homework and assignments, but drop grades make it very doable. Only complaint is that the final was pretty substantially harder than the in-class and hw content. Definitely better at explaining the code than the underlying statistics, but recorded lectures are always nice.
Prof McLean assigned a TON of assignments. Do not take this class alongside other difficult classes, it will be difficult to manage. Very difficult class if you do not attend every.single.lecture. and pay 100% attention the whole, also very easy to fall behind quickly.
I took this class over the summer, and it was manageable. You do have to pay attention during lecture and keep up with the constant homework and labs (which were all graded for accuracy). Do not fall behind. Dr. McLean and the TAs were helpful in answering questions on assignments. The class structure is straightforward and organized.
An outrageous amount of work. Im a junior, so I understand a workload, but Prof McLean thinks this is our only class. Next week, we have a take home exam on Mon., due Wed. Also on Wed. We have an in class midterm. We just got assigned a homework and lab due the day of the midterm (takes hours) that is graded for accuracy. Im drowning in work :(
There is an unreasonable amount of work for this class. Mclean has 6 midterms + a final. Labs+HW take up at least 10+ hours a week. I have no time to do other work or study. I was up til 4am working on a take-home exam due the next morning instead of studying for my other midterms and I ended up failing everything due of it. DO NOT ever miss class.
Dr. Mclean is serious about the Honor Code Violations and WILL give them out easily. he recorded class during an exam to check later if we were cheating or not on in person exams. there are 6 midterms and get ready to dedicate most of your study time to this class. this class is more work than your average stem class.
McLean is great. The complaints about too much work aren't quite fair; the class is 4 credit hours after all. And it is definitely NOT more work than the average stem class. Good lectures and fair exams. Cheating is rampant so I understand why McLean is vigilant about it. Edit: Lowered to 4 because of no curve. The tests absolutely need a curve.
Amazing! He was very understanding and genuine in wanting each student to succeed. He took the time to answer all questions clearly and was very approachable. If you try your best, come prepared, and get clarification on anything you are confused about, you will do well.
Jeff McLean is a nice person outside of class. In class, however, the lectures are organized but difficult to follow. He does NOT record lectures anymore and unless you are typing notes for every aspect, it will be tough to go back and follow. Homework and weekly labs are graded on correctness. Take this class with friends and a peer tutor.
He is an amazing guy. The third midterm was brutal but if you read and understood the concepts you will do very well. The workload is massive, but it is a 4-credit course for a reason. I will take him a zillion times. Nice guy.
he's a nice guy but work load went insane. it was extremely fast paced. quiz, lab, homework due every week. midterms were hard but thank GOD for the take home tests and that cushioning. oh lord study for that final, prepare for it as much as you can, I AM WARNING YOU! girl next to me started crying during it (not even being dramatic).
Nice and smart professor, very organized, a lot of homework that was sometimes difficult, occasionally dull lectures that were more because of the material than him, a group final project that maybe could have been structured a little better. Quizzes had a bit confusing layout but they're all common sense so they were often pretty easy.
Absolutely don't take STOR 120 with McLean. He makes all labs and homeworks due before each midterm. His in class midterms are difficult but his take home midterms are all right. The final was the only reason why my grade boosted, but he never curves each midterm or final, so beware. Even on the last midterm, the average was low but he didn't care.
Mclean is a very kind professor and really cares about his students, but is still very serious about his work. He does give a lab every week for the lab portion, but there is time to work on it during the lab time. The class was project heavy since there are no tests/midterms but there were quizzes and analyses which worked as assessments.
McLean has insane trust issues. He wants to report students for breaking the honor code. He records the room while you take exams. Obviously, you'll be fine, just do your work yourself, but his obsession with finding cheaters makes the course stressful. The entire semester I was worried about accidentally breaking honor code, even though I wasn't.
Out of all the comsci courses I've taken hes got to be the most usless. He doesn't answer the piazza questions students have, his lectures are pointless (he just does the code and doesn't explain it), has weird trust issues during exams (and then tries to one-up you by saying hes recording you). Just overall, not very good.
His powerpoints are not helpful and the work does not feel like the only preq needed is stor 155. The homework is so hard and so was the first midterm. The midterm average was literally a 67. He doesn't teach he just writes code and expects you to learn everything on your own.
The midterms are no longer open note like people said below. This class kept me up at night stressing because he didn't teach us how to do anything well at all. Thank you for inspiring to switch out of the statistics major lol.
His lectures are not helpful as he just codes and uses random R functions with little to no explanation or context. As a CS major I'm used to reading documentation, but you aren't given enough time in class to read about the function. Attendance is mandatory, but useless. Expect to learn the entire class on your own with a poorly written textbook.
Took this class because the tests were supposed to be open note. He changed his policies this semester. Lectures are hard to follow, all he does is open an r notebook and code whatever he is feeling that day. Provides no materials for exams and grades homework slowly and harshly. Also had nothing to say about the first exam average being a 60.
Exams are no longer open note. He is a very harsh grader overall, and grades very slowly. For grade feedback, all you see is what you got wrong with no explanation as to why it's wrong. There are also no study guides for his exams. Attendance is required, but all he does is code in R with no explanation as to what he's actually doing.
He changed everything about the way this class works. No more open note tests. He doesn't teach and expects us to understand new material automatically. I have all A's, and now I'm afraid I won't even pass. Grades way too harshly.
The class format was changed this semester. Exams are no longer open-note, which makes them extremely difficult. The average for the first exam was a 60, and all that he said was that the exam grades are not going to be curved. The homeworks are graded very slowly and there are no study guides, so studying is nearly impossible for the exams.
He just plays in R studio during class with no explanation at all. Only our first homework has been graded and there is no explanation for any grades. The average for the first midterm was a D and he didn't care. My discrete math class is easier than this class. Do not take this class with him.
This professor is unorganized and lazy because before the first exam which was a couple of days away, he had not made the exam yet so it was a poorly written exam. Moreover, he doesn't provide any study resources and the homeworks before the exam were not graded until after the first exam so there was no way to know if we did the homeworks right.
Not sure why he's being review bombed. It's true that the tests switched to closed-book (unfortunately), but he's genuinely a good lecturer. Apart from one bad question, the first test was fair if you actually did the readings and completed the HWs thoughtfully. I do wish he would utilize all of class instead of finishing 5 minutes early though!
Terrible professor. Tests have absolutely nothing to do with homework. Assigns a group project that is impossible to coordinate within the due date. Test averages in the 60s and claims he won't be curving.
never ever ever EVER in your life take 455 or any class with McLean. TERRIBLE
He wants the students to fail. The clas average for the first midterm was a D and he's not curving it. The homework is very hard and time consuming. He doesn't teach he just codes on his laptop during class.
This class by far is one of the most difficult classes I have had. The material being taught is not bad, but the assignments that he expects you to complete and the closed-note exams make the class difficult. Does not respond in the Piazza, so not point in joining it, and takes relatively long to give back the HW grade and leaves no comments.
This class is 4 midterms; however it is a class clearly for statistics major. If you're not interested in statistics in any way avoid this class. The exams were purely conceptual which I think is a very good way of preparing for the data science world. The professor tries his best to accommodate everyone.
Jeff is a good guy but the midterms were horrendous you should definitely take STOR 155 and COMP 110 before this class. I dont hate the class but i literally dread the midterms and Im a cs student who took comp 283 with jack. I borderline consider the in class midterms a lost cause. Big man also assigns 2 assignments to be due the day of midterms
This class is all python coding and you use it for data analysis, which I wasn't expecting and makes the class more difficult than it should be. The labs and textbook are helpful to learn the actual coding aspect of the class. The in-class midterms are a lost cause, the class average is normally a 50/60 percent. Difficult for being an intro.
Awful group projects, awful grading system and awful teaching. The materials are not difficult but lectures are difficult to understand and too complicated.
Dr. Mclean is a very strict professor for no absolute reason and he has unnecessarily tough standards. He needs to drop the students lowest homework assignment from their grade.
Jeff is a very nice guy, but this class was all over the place. The exams were very conceptual despite focusing on mostly application in lecture. The homework was fair and I thought that they reflected what was taught in lecture. Lectures were also all over the place and sometimes it was hard to follow what he was trying to get at.
Class would be doable with previous R experience. Material is good and Professor McLean is accessible outside of class. I wish he was responsive on Piazza though. Have not gotten HWs back before the midterm. It's not the code, it's the analyses. Knowing if our thought processes are correct is vital to learning, or post an example of HW problems.
Not sure why all the hate-He is a good lecturer, and the material is useful. Do not recommend without R experience. The tests are hard, but if you study they are doable. Homework is doable by going to lecture and taking good notes. Overall, it is a 400-level class and the material reflects that, but if you are a hardworking student, you'll be fine.
As a statistics major, this class is honestly not that difficult, but it does take some getting used to. Don't worry about memorizing large chunks of code for exams (you will learn what to prioritize after the first exam). Lots of homework and annoying group projects though.
This professor would be amazing if he dropped the lowest HW assignment.
Dr. Mclean is a pretty good lecturer. The homework is using methods of data analysis in R, while the 4 tests are mostly conceptual data analysis questions. The final is then similar to the homeworks. The one complaint I have is that that he really does not give guidance on what to expect on the exams beyond "what we covered on the slides."
Great professor, solid tests. Only issue is the homework, it would be a lifesaver if we got 4 drops instead of 3.
I wouldn't take this class if you don't already have a strong background statistics/coding. The whole lecture consists of coding practice problems from templates he creates. The whole class seems very robotic. The midterms and and final were pretty difficult and the majority of the class didn't score great. For a 120 level class this class was hard
The class content is not too bad, but there are four midterms, one of which was during the second to last week of class. There is plenty of study material, but homeworks are not graded in time for the exams, so you don't know if you made any mistakes. He doesn't also release answers for homeworks or solutions for the midterms.
This class was super difficult. Exams were all written and about equations yet we only played in R during class. He goes super fast and his approach to teaching the material is not the best. He'll spend the whole class in R just for the exams to have 10% coding questions. Would not recommend especially for a data science elective.
Only take if you are a statistics major. Material is fast, but useful. Takes a lot of studying and effort, even with previous coding experience. However, if you are hardworking, study, and take good notes, you can do well in this class. But it definitely is not an easy grade, you have to work for it. He doesn't release exam or homework solutions.
Explains concepts well and this course is not terrible for conceptual difficulty. But my word the amount of homework was so unnecessary.
4 midterms 12% each, they were not super hard but READ THE QUESTIONS CAREFULLY. The final was not bad at all and in all it was a cool class and McLean does a good job explaining the material.
Professor McLean is engaging during lectures. Homework and labs take a few hours to complete, 3 exams were really hard for me, but the take-home portions were better + weighed more for grade, weekly quizzes and lab, final exam is the easiest exam in the course, overall a great course and I learned a great deal!
If you are a good test taker you will have success. I deeply understood this material, but dont work well under time constraint, and my grade suffered because of it. 68% is test, which is normal, but the tests covered irrelevant material that is not useful in real life. Got nearly a 100% in homework, but did bad on tests even tho I study well.
This was his first semester with exams for this class and it is evident that he himself wasn't prepared for them by not grading homeworks in time, by not covering the statistics content that would be on the test (emphasized too much coding during class), and by not providing correct answers after the exams so that students know what they got wrong.
Professor McLean lectured well overall. He always answered my questions with detailed explanations of concepts. The first exam felt unfairly difficult with no past exams posted, but the rest were good, including the final. However, exams are more conceptual compared to lectures. Midterms were closed note and written, involving some written code.
I don't think Dr. McLean is intentionally difficult, but our past semester was rough. New paper coding exam format, no practice materials, incredibly late homework grading, rarely answered forum questions, poor slide decks, robotic lecture coding sessions. Course content is relatively chill and will hopefully be ironed out. Disappointing.
this class is labeled as an introduction to datascience, but even the tutors i went to said it is absolutely not an introductory course. i think this shouldnt be labeled as a stat class, it should be labeled as comsci, there is little to no actual math happening-all coding. as a freshman just trying to fill focus capacities, do not take this class.
The class content is relatively chill, but the exams can be unfairly difficult. Lectures focus too much on coding with little exam prep. Definitely use unstuck study and the textbook to study - they were super helpful.
This class was a nightmare. I P/F the class, because there was no way I was going to get out unscathed. I put in 10 hours a week and ended with a B- (i.e., a pass). Ultimately, don't take the class unless necessary. If you take it, go to the TAs and ULAs every week; they will give you the answers. In my experience, boosting HW and Lab grade helps.
McLean is the best professor I have had here at UNC so far. His lectures are so well structured and he is very caring and passionate about the subject he teaches. STOR 120 is NOT the easiest introduction course but if you pay attention and do the work you will be fine. I would ONLY recommend McLean if you need to take STOR 120.
McLean overall is a great professor! Ignore all the reviews about the insane workload, there's a lab and hw due every week and it really does not take that long. Exams are difficult, there's no curve and they're on paper which can be a little frustrating. Overall I learned a lot in this class, I would recommend if you're willing to put the work in!
Professor McLean's organized style and teaching style were very good. Watching him go through code, and then using the code in a weekly lab helps drill the concepts in. Tests were not very difficult if you go to class and pay attention and study the textbook/previous assignments. Made me want to take another data science class.
I'm not good at coding and but I think that Prof. McLean explained all the concepts in class pretty well and explains how to do the code by going through it all in class. I think the midterms were a little hard, but not impossible, and the homework/lab assignments will pick your grade up. Also, the textbook is free, so don't worry about that.
McLean is extremely knowledgeable about the subject but is also super kind and caring. He did his best to make the class as easy as possible for those of us who are new to coding and/or stats, and is very understanding and generous. 3 midterms and a Final (cumulative because concepts build on each other throughout the semester). Best prof for 120!
McLean is a very cold unapproachable guy who rarely answers his email. Even if everyone fails a test, he will proudly put the grades in- no curve/ rounding. I got a fine grade in this class, but it was such a nightmare as he genuinely tried his best to make everyone fail. Not sure why he's so intent on everyone doing poorly? but here we are
Even as a pre-med, I think learning how to code statistical concepts in Python is useful, and Dr. McLean is a good teacher. The textbook is free, and the day-to-day assignments and even midterms are easy. The final was a bit difficult. Lectures are him coding stuff and you following along.
I don't think this is Mclean's fault, but the class is structured to be an "intro" for people without stats or CS experience, but boils down to a very stats-heavy class (conceptually) and mostly simple code. If you've taken stats, the class is easy despite in-class midterms being somewhat tricky. Mclean does a good job of explaining and being fair.
his lectures are organized well, but he moves too slowly through the python snytax and too fast through the stats equation. I alr knew most of both, so it was fine for me, but he didn't fully explain how each stats equation worked, but did explain every word in the python syntax
Decent prof. Awkward to talk to but nice & willing to explain things. Barely a stats class, basically only coding outputs that most of our tests were based on. No practice beforehand but tests only weighted 30% total and 20% final, so HW/labs brought up my grade. Not sure why this class needs a lab, but decent class overall.
Very code-heavy class. Lectures focus on syntax and go through stats quickly. About 2 HW assignments a week that are graded strictly, but aren't too hard. Attendance is lenient, but the final was difficult. He makes lectures interesting, but isn't very accessible outside of class. I'd recommend it, but prior stats knowledge is really helpful.
Lectures are good and the readings are very helpful if you get confused. The hw and labs are a lot of work, but they're also the only way to prepare for the exams. I wish that there were practice questions to study, but he is good at answering questions in office hours. He is a little awkward, but very nice if you make the effort to be friendly.
