Took this last summer as a have to and wound up digging it. Very interesting lectures from this guy. He talks at a level that makes the material understandable and he's funny. Might have done more science if I'd known it was so cool. Learned way more than I expected to learn. Highly recommended.

Mr. McVey was very dedicated to us- the students. He made sure everything was clear and he also had two study sessions a week! He made sure students participated to better grasp concepts. He honestly was one of the best professors I have had so far in college because he has a unique hands on teaching style and he cares a lot about his students.

Superbly clear lectures, excellent handouts - you really don't need the textbook except for practice problems. Excellent supplemental instruction with several sessions each week. Keeps in touch, sometimes with several emails per day... you won't forget a deadline with Jeff! No curve, but when one exam got sucky scores, he held an optional makeup.

He broke Chemistry down in terms and concepts easy to grasp. Very dedicated to teaching Chemistry. He was funny and made Chemistry interesting. I highly recommend him!

Jeff was a great teacher and he was clear in his concepts. He gave really good test reviews that helped a lot. He gave quizzes every Wednesday and gave extra credit with the einstruction questions. He was a great chem teacher and I would recommend him to anyone, especially if you aren't a big fan of chemistry.

This prof rocks. You can understand everything he says, and attending class is a big advantage. Not too hard Multiple Choice Tests, weekly quizzes are really easy. Online homework. Makes a lot of jokes, and does a lot of fun experiments in class. Take this guy, you wont be disappointed.

Energetic, has some real world application experience stories. Does teach at a rather fast pace, and its highly advised to do your own reading. However, when it comes to test, the review is dead on, and if you do that you will find the test fairly easy.

Mr. McVey is someone I would like to hang out with at a bar, but I wish I would've taken Dr. Feakes for Chemistry. McVey isn't a bad professor, but he's not all that great, either. He's all over the place and goes through the material super fast.

McVey is a great professor. He does so much to help his students out and try to get them a good grade. With that being said, this class is NOT easy by any means. You will have to try very hard if you want to make an A. Don't miss a single class because then you won't get the extra credit. Also, attend every homework session and that will help alot.

Great professor. Very clear with his explanations and kept class interesting. Only complaint was the occasional misogynistic analogies..kinda wish he would leave that outside of class. But very entertaining, and if you do the work and read the text you can do very well in this class.

HOMEWORK is done on masteringchemistry.com (u must purchase) it is THE MOST DIFFICULT THING OF THE CLASS! He is funny, and interactive during lecture. The SIs were AMAZING!! Make sure to attend the SI sessions and YOU practically HAVE TO GO TO the Homework sessions cuz its soo hard! GREAT PROFESSOR, but the material is DIFICULT! GOOD LUCK!

If you like chemistry, take him.The hardest thing about the class was Mastering Chemistry which is online homework. Otherwise you have to go to class to get attendance points which uses the clickers. He offers practice tests which I found to be very helpful and sometimes includes those questions on tests. I did not use the book at all.

One of the best teachers I have ever had. Show up to class, study, and LISTEN to Jeff and you will do well. Jeff makes himself more than available for questions and study sessions. Class act!

Chem II is hard, even McVey will tell you that so don't expect to breeze through this course. McVey drove me nuts with all his joking but really, he WANTS you to do good. He does everything in his power to give you a good grade so take the opportunity. Go to class everyday, do the homework, and go to study sessions and you'll likely pass.

Chemistry is hard. No getting around it. But McVey wants you to do well. He loves Chemistry, and you can tell. Very entertaining lectures keep you paying attention. Homework is hard, but it's online and he encourages you work together and go to help sessions. Tests are straight-forward & he gives a review. Never used the book. Take McVey.

If you want to make an A or B, expect to go to the HW sessions, slac lab and attend every class. Subject matter is TOUGH but McVey is a really good prof.

Chemistry is hard, but McVey is always willing to help and available if you need to talk to him. You must go to class or you'll be lost. By some miracle, I got an A in this class. If you want a good grade, you better go to every class, do all the homework, go to all the SI sessions, and do the practice tests. He really wants you to do well, but this class is hard. I took Compton last semester and didn't understand much but got a good grade, wish I had taken him again.

What a great professor. keeps the class entertained and was very helpful during his office hours. the HW is hard so go to his study session and you will do fine. his tests were fair and not that extreme when you study for it and he gives review which helps a lot. IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A CHEM COURSE TAKE IT WITH HIM YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!

I took him for a summer chem course. Thought it was going to be an easy run but I was sure wrong! Had to quit one of my jobs just to keep up with the class towards the end. He presents difficult material and expects a lot out of you, but keeps it interesting and quite frankly is hilarious while doing so. Great teacher and a great class structure.

He's a good teacher, very clear and doesn't like to waste time which I like. He's also pretty funny and helps you remember things by making class interesting, using demonstrations, and making jokes. I never even looked in my book once, the notes were sufficient for tests, do his review tests and you will be ready for his real tests.

I took Mr. McVey both semesters. He is very good, eager to answer questions, and has a sense of humor. He really is a great chemistry prof! Definitely take gen chem with him! Do your homework and study, study, study! Chemistry is difficult but he makes it much better!

You have to study, there is no way around it! It is a difficult subject for a 5 week summer course because he has to go super fast to fit in all the objectives. I earned a C and I worked my tail off to get it. He is extremely handsome and knows it.

What a silly comment below (and extreme outlier). Of course you must study outside of class for a college science majors course, and in the 2nd semester, you should know some chemistry. Most careers that require this rigorous course need studious practitioners. McVey is the most clear and helpful prof I had in my years at TX State.

Good teacher. I would recommend him for general chem II. A little extra credit is available on each test which helps. He does post tests from previous semesters with solutions on TRACS. Bottom line is that if you attend regularly, do well on the online homework and in class quizzes and review the posted tests from previous semesters you should pass

Honestly fell in love with chemistry because of this class. Mcvey is AMAZING at explaining each concept. He is funny, friendly, and engaging. Although the course is supposed to be challenging, with regular attendance and a 15 hour cram session before the tests, it's pretty easy to get an A on them.

GREAT professor. It's hard to understand everything in class, because of the pace you move, but if you visit him in his office hours, he is VERY helpful. I never had an interest for Chemistry, and he led me to actually liking it this semester. Prepare to put in a lot of hours for the class, but in the end, it's worth it. He's entertaining, too!

Chemistry is my worst subject. But I couldn't have asked for a better professor than this guy. He moves fast in class but is willing to slow down & explain more if you ask. Course material is challenging and dense, but McVey does a great job of explaining the material in understandable chunks. His light-hearted humor and funny anecdotes keep the class interesting, which is good because you won't want to miss a session. Very easy to drown. If you're gunning for an A, be prepared to work. Barely used the book.

Chem is a VERY weak subject for me, but McVey makes it simple enough. The class is difficult just because of the material, but McVey makes it as easy as it can be. If you gotta take chem at TXST, you can't go wrong with McVey.

Best Chemistry teacher I've ever had, funny, great at explaining and an awesome guy

McVey is awesome, hilarious sense of humor. He totally sets you up for success if you just attend class, do the homework, and keep up with quizzes. Its difficult material no matter what, but this is the second time I took this course at TXST and he made all the difference.

Attendance is "NOT mandatory", but he asks clicker questions every day that you want to be there for. Makes the material as interesting as chemistry can be, and is very passionate about the material. This is not an easy class due to the material, not the teacher. I feared CHEM like the plague, but he made it easy as can be.

This class is definitely difficult, but it is certainly doable. McVey is an excellent professor and does all that he can to make sure that you learn the material. You have to work to earn your grade, but as long as you go to class (for clicker points), pay attention, and study hard you should be happy with any outcome you receive.

Chem was not an easy subject for me, but Mr.McVey took time out of his schedule to help me. If Chem is not a strong area for you, take McVey. As long as you are trying and attending class he will go out of his way to help you. He really is a great guy and I'll be taking him for 1342 next semester!

I took him for 1341 but got help with material and homework for 1342 the next semester. Great professor.

Looky here. His exams are pretty damn hard. He posts EVERYTHING you need for the classes on his TRACS site. Very helpful in emails. He is a 64 year old kid. Will call you out if you leave class early or if you are on your cell phone. I'm not even finished yet, but he definitely wants you to learn - badly. Class averages for the tests have been 60s.

A great teacher, teaching a very difficult subject. attendance is taken with a clicker and is 5% of your grade. I printed out the powerpoints to make the note taking easier. Tests are hard, but the SI help, he has a review day once a week and the many folders on his TRACS page are life savers. Overall a great and funny teacher.

McVey is by far one of the BEST chemistry professors on the planet. What makes him so? While the material is hard as hell, he breaks it down to toddler level and is extremely patient. He CARES and he wants his students to learn the material and do well. Very approachable. Take his course!

Easily the greatest teacher I've had in my life. Lectures are mesmerizing, I couldn't stop listening if I wanted to. Explains difficult concepts very well. His tests are hard but never feel cheap. He is an amazing professor. His class is tough and SIs were helpful. Gives homework and quizzes for credit. I got Cs on the test but As on the quizzes and passed with a B. He also helped me on an assignment for another course and has the greatest stories from skydiving to acting to being a para rescue. He also is willing to help those who need it.

He subbed for my normal Chem 1341 Professor this week and he's amazing! One of the best teachers ever, if I was actually in his class I'd probably get an A. Even from just two lectures with him he's a wonderful educator. He uses great examples and spits random knowledge all throughout lecture. Really fun and easy to listen to. Take him!

McVey is arguably the best professor at Texas State. I would recommend him to anyone. Tests are very similar to the practice tests and will pretty much do anything to help you. Definitely go to lecture. Attendance is 5% of grade. Plus, clicker questions during class- he will give you 2.5% extra credit for accuracy. Best. Prof. Ever.

I've been in school for several years and he is the best professor I've ever had. For such a difficult subject he is makes it fun. Going to class was a lot like going to a stand up comedy routine. He gives extra credit worth 2.5% added to your total grade if you show up to class and get the clicker questions right. Outstanding lecturer!

DO THE PRACTICE TESTS, some questions are recycled. Good lectures, but chem 2 is definitely a tough class. I felt prepared for the ACS final, made an 88 on it and ended with an A in the class. Go to class and answer the clicker questions

Chem is a hard subject but if you go to EVERY CLASS and pay attention while you're there, it's really not hard at all. He explains everything at a very simple level. Easy to understand. Give's plenty of extra credit opportunities, very helpful during his homework sessions, simplifies what could be confusing material down to an appropriate level students should be at and all around just a great guy. Got an A without the textbook since he gives out his own notes but went to class everyday. Studied 6-8hrwk

Took his summer course which is apparently way easier than fallspring semesters. Expect to spend a lot of time on this class, but it's not too hard. He makes complex things easy to understand. Go to class and his homework sessions.

Great professor. Is very clear on what you need to do in order to make the grade. I took him for Summer. He offers a lot of help and understands that chemistry is difficult for people to learn. At any rate this is the professor to take if you find Chemistry hard or just hate it. (I love it) -Also NEVER miss class regardless of professor.

Took this class during the summer and needless to say it was the most challenging class I ever took. However, taking it with McVey made it more enjoyable. Chemistry is not easy, regardless of the professor, but McVey makes the subject fun and relatable and is also very understanding of it being a tough course. Take him!!!!!

This guy is honestly overrated, he just runs through slides and is full of himself, he will take any chance he gets to talk about himself. I am not the best at chem and while he does try to help, he tends to just leave you in the dust struggling.

McVey knows that not everyone likes (or is good at) chemistry, so he kind of brings it down a level, which is great. It's easy to follow along if you bring his powerpoint to class. This class was REALLY hard. I'd been sitting at a C for most of the semester, but after studying a ton for the final, I made an A on it and it replaced my lowest test grade, which was a 65. He wants you to do well, but don't expect him to just hand you the grade you want. Lectures were fun and he's a great teacher. Take him if you can!

I hated chemistry in highschool, but by the end of my semester with McVey, I was close to changing my major to Chemistry. He is a great, sarcastic, witty professor that will keep you motivated and make you want to learn. He gives practice tests from previous semesters to study before the real test! Study them! You get what you put into his class!

Wonderful professor, really cares for the students to pass by constantly attempting to give extra credit points in class. Great teacher, if you pay attention! Textbook is not needed no matter what he says. He is a good teacher and I got an A in the class. As long as you do his practice exams and utilize the resources he provides on TRACS you will get good grades on all exams. Pay attention during lecture he takes attendance and accuracy on clicker questions so make sure you show up.

McVey is a wonderful professor! I didn't study all that much and I passed with a B. Got an 80 on the final too! don't need the book! don't buy the book! he gives you everything you need to pass. Attend every class and do the homework. Go to his office hours if you're confused. He doesn't bite!

McVey does everything he can to not only help you pass, but also make an A in the class. He uploads multiple previous tests each unit and if you take the time to go through them and understand them then you will get an A. Chemistry 1341 is not an easy class but McVey clearly wants his students to do well. He answers any questions you have during class and homework sessions. There are always test reviews and practice exams posted on TRACS and if you do those they really help on the tests. If you have to take this class, take McVey.

McVey was a fantastic chemistry professor. I would highly recommend him to anyone taking General Chemistry at TXST. He held weekly review sessions to help students with homework and any concepts they were struggling with. He provides resources, you just have to take advantage of them.

Tests are tough, but you have to study for this and understand the material. DO EVERY PRACTICE TEST!! They will help you so much. Go and review your old tests and keep them so you can have them to study for the final. Form study groups early and help each other. Lots of extra credit, go to his office hours and pay attention in class.

BEST DECISION I'VE EVER MADE! He encourages questions in lecture & provides us with extra & helpful material. I got 104 on 2 out of the 4 exams by going to the LATE hw sessions, doing the practice exams (on TRACS), & by constantly solving the textbook practice problems. Beware: He only curves the final exam. Attend class or you will be left behind.

Yes, Chem 2 is difficult, but McVey truly does his best to help you understand the material. He also does weekly hw sessions where he literally goes through every single problem on the hw... McVey is the BEST science professor I've ever had and also very hilarious! You can tell that he really cares about his students doing well in his course. He gave so many study materials for the tests and quizzes and they were extremely helpful! There were 4 exams and a comprehensive final. Trust me... study the practice exams for each test!

The best chem prof this school has. One of the best profs in general. Makes clear what is going to be on quizzes and tests. Sometimes let's you take quizzes at home or in groups. Not difficult to pay attention in lecture. He's not monotonous at all, he throws in a joke here and there to break things up. He explains new theories really really well.

He's very funny and keeps you interested throughout the class. The class is tough overall but he makes it as bearable as possible. He tells you exactly what will be on tests and quizzes and the quizzes 9/10 were take home and the other one was working in a group in class.

Tough class but definitely worth it. He is a good teacher and cares about his students. There are homework sessions every week and he basically does it for you, but your assignments will have different number to plug in. A quiz over each chapter every week which are kind of tough. But overall a good class that I would take again.

McVey was great at explaining the material and conveying tough topics in funny ways that help you remember better. I had previously taken AP Chem and found this class much more enjoyable. However, Mcvey spaces out his test weirdly and bunches a lot of them at the end so beware and space out studying accordingly.

He doesn't really give extra credit. He gives take home quizzes. Form study groups. You have to study a lot for this class. He goes through the material really fast.

McVey gives out lots of extra credit points towards tests. The online homework is pretty easy, and he has homework sessions where he basically works through it for you. He has PowerPoint notes and practice tests (which are pretty much the test) online. He's really funny too. Great professor.

McVey is AMAZING! I took him in the summer and he was so supportive of his students and making sure they study. It is a very hard class and the only way I made an A was by going to an SI session everyday (its easier to do that in the summer) so go to SI as much as possible and it will help you tremendously. I was really nervous to take chemistry after having a difficult time with it at another school, but McVey made it so easy to understand and kept his lectures entertaining. As long as you attend class consistently, ask questions when you're stuck, and actually try, there is no reason why you wouldn't do well in this class.

McVey is one of the best Gen Chem I professors at TXST! I struggled in the beginning, but eventually figured out his teaching style following thanksgiving. The book is not mandatory, but it is very helpful to rent. Lots of extra credit opportunities! Attendance not mandatory, but you get extra credit for perfect attendance.

Chemistry 2 Is HARD, including the LAB. You have to study a head of time and also try to attend SI session just to get the basic of what your learning in class. Mcvey tried his best to teach us the subjects, however it A LOT of material. Also the FINAL, is NOT like his Exams. His exam had a Lot Of math, The ACS had mostly conception questions! ��

Go to SI sessions for extra help (he makes it required for attendance to go weekly for chem 2) and go to his office hours because he is more than willing to help you. General chemistry is a hard subject regardless of who you take it with. McVey is willing to put in the work and extra time to make sure that the students willing to put in the work will succeed in his course. Very caring and is willing to help you he's old so he'll make a few mistakes but he corrects himself. Highly recommend taking his course.

Attendance is huge, I for sure thought I was going to pass with a low C but I miraculously passed with a B. The attendance is what push my grade up. But I still studied as best as I can and it was a hard course, had a way better experience than the first time I took it.

Prof McVey is the best professor for CHEM 1341. He is incredibly fair and tries to provide opportunities for extra credit. He uses demonstrations and works out practice problems during lecture. I cannot stress enough how great professor Mcvey is. I have always been a straight-A student and I could barely pass regulars chemistry in high school. I did not expect to do good in this class but I always went to his office hours and he really took the time to explain the information to me. He also would help me outside of class and office hours.

McVey provided many resources, extra credit, office hours, and put in a lot of effort to help the class. I'll be honest, this is not the first time I have taken chem 1. Mcvey is so understanding and gives so many chances to save your grade, from SI extra credit to extremely relaxed quizzes it is definitely possible to pass this class. The tests are really the only thing you need to be extremely diligent about in this class, it will matter in the end.

I took this class in person, and let's be honest for any normal humans, chemistry is hard. However, McVey knows that and helps out as much as he can. Has office hours, and videos about each topic throughout the semester, for more information. Just understand you will be needing to study on your own for this course, I spent at least 5hr every day.

Dr. McVey is great professor and very sweet! Chemistry in general can be extremely difficult, but Dr. McVey allows you to digest the material properly. I took McVey's class and the exams were pretty hard. However when retaking it at a community college I got an A+. I Highly recommend taking this prof he is very understanding and wants you to pass. However you do need to put in the work by doing the hw, practicing problems outside of class, and going to his office hours/SLAC.

The first exam, I scored a 29, but then started using his material and studying way more, and ended up with an A in the class!

Prof McVey was a good professor. He wanders off topic a lot during lectures, and sometimes would over explain material. He wants to help you and wants you to understand. The homework has unlimited attempts, and the quizzes are 3 each question. So as long as you do the work you should do well.

I took Mcslay for Gen Chem I and II. I am extremely bad at math but somehow still managed to make a "B" in both courses. Do Mcvey's exam review a week before your exam and if you have questions, attend his office hours. It is easy to get lost in the sauce (GEN CHEM II). Also, it helps to refresh on Log rules and Algebra! The ACS final was rough.

This professor was very entertaining, and he cares about his students. He goes through his slides pretty quick, but he posts them online for you to access. Unfortunately, he does not provide a lot of study material compared to other professors. The difficulty of his exams are mediocre, but expect to experience a few challenging questions.

This is his last year of teaching, and I am amazingly lucky I have him as my teacher. He is very caring for students and wants to see his student succeed. Highly recommend taking McVey if chemistry is not your strongsuit.

TAKE HIM! I actually have above a 100 rn!!! Watch his YT lecture b4 class so class is a review cuz his vids are more in depth & it has answers to EC problems. Get HW to 100 cuz there unlimited attempts, his practice test/reviews are similar to exams, has test review office hrs 1-2 days b4 test day. Study slides AND YT vid notes & you'll have an A!!

McVey is awesome, the class is challenging for sure but he makes the content pretty easy to understand and really wants his students to succeed.

This class is quite manageable if you dedicate some time to studying. It's not as hard as some might suggest. Although chemistry isn't my strongest subject, the instructor's teaching style really helped me excel. Now, I have a 102% in the class, thanks to him and his generous grading curve.

Chemistry can be a tough subject but I wish I could write an 1000 character essay about how great this professor is. He's funny, he can be hard on students but genuinely cares and truly one of the best professors I've EVER had. He understands how hard chemistry can be and makes it SUPER DUPER doable and he gives tons of super useful study material.

Professor McVey makes this tough chemistry class manageable. His engaging teaching style and helpful study materials, like Quizard and unstuckstudy ai, make it doable even for non-science majors. Worth the effort to get that A.

He gives a lot of helpful resources on canvas and goes through many examples during class. If you pay attention and follow along with the examples you will be fine. It is just a hard course and it is fast paced

The GOAT of chemistry. If you can, take him he will make the challenge of chemistry a whole lot nicer. He cares for his students, the homework helps you understand, and he helps you out with exams with a nice curve and extra credit when you can get it. Take his class, trust me, there is a reason he has a bunch of 5 star reviews.

AMAZING professor! The class itself is very fast paced and challenging so you will need to study and stay on top of your things. However,Mcvey gives many extra points between the iclicker questions and curves that it is doable. His tests are also set up where if you make a better grade on this one it replaces your last one allowing me to have a 103

He's great! I will say, though, his handwriting is a BEAST so sometimes it's extremely hard to read. This course is extremely fast paced so it's vital you attend. He's super funny and gives extra credit. Also, his tests are not like the review he provides, but he gives a ton of extra resources if you don't understand something. Overall, take him!!

Chemistry is a hard subject, so you have to put in the work and review outside of class. A lot of people complained about McVey, but it's honestly just a challenging course. He was a passionate professor, and you can tell he likes to teach. Overall, I recommend him. He uploads plenty of resources as well. P.S. His handwriting is a little chopped.

In my opinion Mcvey is great he just teaches a very hard subject, I struggle with chemistry a lot but I was able to get a B in the course. He gives lots of resources but you have to study to pass.

Super charming guy who really understands his stuff. A truly genuine and cool professor. Taking him again for Chem 2 and he has been a great lecturer and a funny guy as well. Id definetly recommend going to lectures. If youre confused, raise your hand and ask, he is understanding that chemistry is hard. Curves exams by a few points but if you study and put the effort in, youll be good.Highlyrecommend

This prof has so much lore and made the class fun. I procrastinate badly, so I didn't study until the day of exams, and still did fine (my lowest exam grade was a B). Expect mandatory SI, mandatory attendance, extra credit, heavily weighted exams, and an ACS final. It's chemistry, so it's gonna be time-consuming and hard, but it is doable.

Cool guy! Shows chemical reactions by experiments in class. Lots of resources like videos and practice. Mandatory attendance and exit tickets at the end of class but they are collaborative. There are also mandatory SI sessions. Coming from a procrastinator, this is a difficult class but if you use all the resources he gives you then you will do ok.
