Mortensen is absolutely brilliant. I knows the stuff without looking at any books and can answer any question without have to deliberate on the subject. He does, however, have a speech impedement which can make him difficult to understand. I would definately reccomend taking this prof but you'll probably want to sit close to the front.
Mortensen does have an artificial voice box or something like that, but he's actually not hard to understand at all. He doesn't usually put things in the easiest terms, but he is pretty funny without trying to be and he pratically gives points with his homework. Recommended.
I also went to this class one day and transferred to Thomas Quint's Math 182 class. Mr. Mortenson seems like a different kind of teacher. He has some kind of speech problem, though its not impossible to understand him, I felt that it added another challenge to a difficult course. Seemed to go thru material quickly for the 1st day.
He's a really smart person, but is shy... He has a problem speaking, but that is not the problem... The subject is hard and extra help is needed... I think he's one of the greatest teachers I've had!
Yes, he has the speech thing, which can drive me crazy on a bad day. The only problem is he obviously knows his stuff, but he's not very good at teaching it. I dunno, maybe I was spoiled by my excellent math teacher last year, but I just don't think he's up to par. And he likes to used "Magic Math" where he just suddenly writes the answer after skipping 3 or 4 steps and fails to explain how he got there
He knows what he is doing... He is really smart and it is not his fault that people are stupid and struggle with Calculus!
Really good at teaching the material, but like everyone said, he does have a speech thing. As long as you focus on what he is saying you can clearly understand what he is saying. Good compared to other professors.
Really good teacher. Voicebox is not hard to deal with after about a couple of days. Really knows the material. Will tell you exactly whats on his exams and quizzes, sometimes exact problems he tells you to study without anything being changed.
Excellent professor. In fact, he's the best math professor I've ever had. He is able to very clearly explain the theoretical issues and provides lots of practical advice on working through them. His tests and quizes are challenging but fair. Highly recommended if you get the chance. (BTW there is no Nobel in math, it's the Field's medal)
This is my 2nd UG degree; one of the best teachers I've ever had. Absolutely fair, reasonable, friendly, nice, etc. Teaches to test and quizzes. Straightforward. No tricks. I wish all my professors were as helpful as Prof. Mortensen is.
This guys is pretty cool and knows his stuff. He can overexplain things at times but you still get the point. Highly recommend him to anyone just getting started with calc. Tests and homework are reasonable, just keep up.
Straightforward, no tricks, fair and reasonable. Do your part and you should get an A. Had him for 283 and he was just as good. Excellent review for quizzes and exams.
he has a voice box so at first his voice is hard to get used to. he is a great teacher though and his tests are very simple. easy A.
Great professor!! I will be taking Mortensen again for calc III. This guy is unintentionally funny, which sometimes makes a dull subject just a bit better.
Dr. Mortensen is very helpful and friendly, and his voice box is easily forgotten after the first week. He assigns HW problems just about every night which is good and bad. His tests are pretty hard to ace, but fairly easy to pass.
AWESOME professor. Extremely helpful, will do anything to help you understand, extends deadlines for homework and tests in a heartbeat. Voice box makes him hard to hear at first, but you get used to it after in a few classes. Some of the things he says are freakin hilarious, he cracks me up.
Loved this prof. He made things very easy for me to understand and I would recommend him to everyone!
He was a great teacher. He knows what he is doing and he knows how to expain it. He is actually really funny in his class too, he knows how to relate to his students and he can really teach this class. He was awesome.
Awesome teacher. He knows exactly what he is doing. He's funny and casual with his teaching but extremely informative. One of the best math teachers I have ever had.
Jeff is a great guy. He is easy to talk to and knows how to relate the information. He extends deadlines for legit reasons. If you need him during office hours, he is always there. Yes, the voicebox throws you off a little, but his uncanning ability to make you laugh in calculus makes him a teacher to take.
Ol' Mo-town is an awesome teacher. His quizzes and tests are very similar to the practice versions he goes over. Don't really have to take notes in his class. Just study the pre-tests and you'll be fine. You'll get used to his voice after a couple classes. He is actually pretty funny sometimes because he tends to annotate everything he does.
He was very clear and thorough in lectures. Even with the voicebox he is very easy to understand. I would recommend going to the lectures; you can solve all of the problems in the homework with a button that walks you through the steps, but a conceptual understanding can only be gained in lecture. The study guides were very close to quizzes/tests.
His lectures are deceptively easy. And, something happened to him in the middle of the semestre causing him to change his status quo. He adores using scantrons for math exams, so don't expect to get partial credit (he hates giving it out). He threw a bizarre problem on the final which hadn't been on any of the previous exams. It was frustrating.
Dr. Mortensten is the most coherent math lecturer I have ever had. He accents his lectures with humor and always gives you relevant information. His homework and tests are appropriate for the subject matter. In general, no one should have any problems with this class as long as they regularly attend lecture. (Note: there are pop quizzes)
Goes too fast. Not very willing to help you if you don't understand.
The lectures can be a little boring, but he's actually really funny as others have mentioned. Study guides go hand in hand with the actual tests and quizzes. Overall easy class.
He's can be really funny. Its a pretty boring subject, but when he jumps around and acts out examples it makes it better. Study guides are very similar to tests, but tests are usually on scantron.
Jeff is the man, he's very clear on what you need to do in solving things. He gives practice exams which are very similar to the actual tests. All in all the class is great. Maybe youll even see him mobbing thru the streets of reno in his little car. I have and it's pretty funny
Awesome teacher! Everyone I know seems to do well with this teacher. Does a great job explaining the math!
I did not pass the class BUT, I know it is all due to my own faults. He is a great teacher and the best so far that I have had at UNR. Choose him for he is overall the best choice. Generally helps all students when he can, and is very clear.
He is a great professor. Guides for exams are very similar to the actual exams which makes that class easier. He is very enthusiastic when explaning, so most student get involved. Just do the homeworks and practice from the guides and you will get a good grade.
jeff is one of the easiest teachers in calc. Calc is not an easy subject if you just skate through, but if you try in his class you will pass hands down. Very helpful and down to earth. He's very entertaining sometimes too. Overall he grades hard but if you study, go to review and try, you will pass.
Great teacher! He gives study guides that are very similar to tests and the tests are very fair. He is crystal clear when explaining material. He is very friendly and is always willing to help. If he is teaching a class you need then you should take him. As long as you put in a genuine effort, you will pass.
Overall a great teacher! Tests can be hard. They are multiple choice which means if you get the question wrong, you lose all points and no partial credit. However, he replaces your final with your lowest test which can help. He really pushes the subject and gives you all the resources you need to succeed. You just have to do the work.
An awesome professor overall. Can be a bit long winded with proofs for everything but go to class and study the pre tests and you'll get a good grade.
This is a great professor, exams are not hard if you study the guides. No trick questions. His notes are clear and he always gives step by step instructions on processes, even when it's a review from earlier classes. It's a HW heavy class, but he doesn't penalize for HW extension requests. Just show up and study, you'll do well.
This class was immensely easily. I received a 98%. His tests are all designed with several M/C and free-response/show work that are usually simple. I would definitely recommend taking Professor Mortenson's class.
There is a quiz every thursday and four exams (including the final). He will replace your lowest exam with the final if it helps your grade. He's a really sweet and cute old guy. Study guides for every quiz and test that were almost always identical. No curve. All multiple choice. Recommended.
I couldn't appreciate the study guides and example problems more. I learn through working out problems, and he was perfect at providing these. There is homework every day, but if you stay on top of it, the assignments don't take more than an hour. The homework was also VERY reflective of what the exams would be like and great practice.
This guy made Linear Algebra really easy. I took it during the 5-week summer session. I'm really happy with my decision for that. All of the practice exams he gives out have exactly the same format as the tests. He is a decent lecturer, gives great notes, but is very boring. I only got a B because I skipped class.
His tests are exactly like the study guides that he posts before each exam and are easy if you do them. He isn't always clear during lectures but going to discussion helps with that. I love him despite the class being boring sometimes but its super cute when he jumps to point at things on the slides. You don't need a textbook for this class!!!
Out of all the calculus classes, Calculus 2 should be the hardest. The professor explains everything well, and there are discussion classes if you don't get the lectures. Once you get behind though, it's hard to catch up. All homework is online and there are no quizzes. There are only 3 tests and 1 final. Reason why it's hard, but good professor.
Jeff is an amazing professor. I'm a computer science major and I am so thankful I took his class. I have a load of homework in my other classes, but I didn't have to worry about this calc class because there was little homework. Sure there were a few assignments due per week, but each one only consisted of three to five questions.
He has a voice problem that catches you off guard at first but after a lecture or two he is really easy to understand, so don't judge a book by its cover. His exams still test your knowledge of the subject but they follow the study guide closely so study that and you will do fine. The homework does not follow the tests.
Dr. Mortensen calc 2 class was very easy and clear. His study guide is exactly like his exam so study and be prepared to pass!
Overall a good professor. The lectures are hard to follow if you're not great at math. The homework is short, and to the point. The tests are very difficult if you do not completely understand the topics. The study guides are true to the test, so study and you will do well. I would take a course by this professor again.
Mortensen is a great lecturer. His methodology is super clear and effective. Attend class, take notes, and complete the homework and practice tests. The practice tests have problems that show up on his actual tests. I'm taking Mortensen for Calc 3 because of how great he taught me.
He is very helpful, and lets you utilize resources. His exams are not that bad as long as you do the expected work. He is very clear and enthusiastic about his subject.
Has great resources online for each chapter and tests
Notes online. Study exams are pretty much identical to the actual exams. Excellent explanation of everything covered in 283. Pretty funny at times. A couple of homework assignments a week, but they aren't terribly long - ranges from 3 to 10 problems per assignment. One of the best math professors at UNR.
A word of caution: he has a voice problem that WILL catch you off guard the first time you enter class. Give it two or three lectures, and you'll be used to it. Whenever asked for help, he would give a very satisfying answer. Equates your lowest of 3 midterms to your final if it helps. His sample tests mirror the actual tests.
He is a very reasonable when it comes to grades and the basic layout of the coursework. His tests do a good job of covering the class content. He is very approachable and good at answering questions you may have outside of class. He is very straightforward when teaching and doesn't make it any harder than it has to be.
This professor explains each topic clearly and completely, and he is careful to review topics related to the one he is discussing. Test scores make up 80% of the grade, but the study material he provides accurately reflects the tests. In short, a fantastic math prof. Book required to access homework.
If you actually want to learn calculus, don't take this class. His tests are nothing like the homework so you can't actually start studying until a week prior to the exams. His exams are fairly easy, but you're pretty much just learning how to make a cheat sheet and how to test. Would not recommend.
The only reason I passed this class is having previous tests of his that are almost like the one he gives out during the semester. The final was nothing like the homework, but passed so I am out of there!
Jeff is the best Calc III professor at UNR. This class isn't an easy A, there is a lot of homework and tests. He is very accommodating with the homework and gives clear study guides that are pretty true to the quizzes and tests he gives. Will throw some curve balls on tests to make sure you understand material. Always willing to help students.
I love Dr. Mortensen! I have had him for calculus II, III, and Differential Equations. He's very smart and relays the material excellently. His tests are very fair and very easy if you study the practice material. I would recommend Mortensen to any student that needs to take upper level math courses.
Mortensen is an awesome professor! I had him for Calc II and III and I was able to understand the concepts, and I'm pretty terrible at math. It's not a cakewalk but his study guides are very similar to the tests and he allows a notecard on all exams. Just put in some time and prepare yourself for exams and you should do fine.
I had him for Calc III and he is amazing. I skipped a lot of class towards the end of the semester and it wasn't that big of a deal because most of his notes are online. His practice tests are quite similar to the exams and sometimes even use the same questions. If you happen to know someone who has taken the class and has past tests use them!
Mortensen is a great professor for DiffEq! his notes are very simple and clear, and practice exams are a good representation of the actual exam. By doing the homework, you will do well in class. He's very friendly and will answer any questions you have with the material or homework outside of the class.
Lectures are boring but attendance is not required. He does provide tons and tons of resources though. Practice quizzes and practice tests. Homework is on webassign and there is plenty of examples to learn from there. I personally never went to class besides for test days but he gives you everything you need to pass. No surprises. Would reccommend
Great prof who really seems to want his students to pass. Does a great job of explaining and is not afraid to dedicate entire lectures to questions instead of moving on. He posts fantastic study guides for quizes and exams that have helped me get A's on every test and exam so far, which I never thought would happen in Calc 3. HW every night though.
The best part of his class is that the study questions and materials really prepare you for his tests. On the tests there's no surprises. I took him for Calc III , he is very open to questions.
Professor Mortensen is an overall great professor. The exams are very heavily weighted so as long as you do well on those you will be fine. He goes into detail on concepts during lecture which can get boring. He posts study guides that outline the test well and he allows a self-created formula sheet for every test.
Hard to find a better professor than Dr. Mortensen. Lectures are clear and easy to follow and if you need extra help, his office hours are very helpful. There's no reason why you can't do well in his class.
Professor Mortensen's lectures are very helpful. He is a little hard to understand, but he's examples that he does in class really help. I have never had a better math teacher then him. I would recommend him to anyone taking math. Very helpful if you don't understand a certain topic.
While his lectures and tests weren't too bad, I'm rating him low because he wasn't accommodating at all even under mitigating circumstances. He is rigid on how his class has to be done, and won't deviate from his plan to help someone out. Also, he focuses on the small picture as opposed to the overall concept.
Hes a cute little old man teaching his math. He was pretty good although some of his test questions involved proofs even though few of us have taken a math proofs class. Study guides were close to the actual test. Lets you use notes and a calculator (which is surprising for Linear)
I loved the way Professor Mortensen taught, his lectures were sometimes boring, but they worked out well. I learned a lot from him. His practice quizzes and exams are really helpful because they outline how the actual quiz and test will be. He provides step by step solutions on the quizzes too. He allows formula sheets as well!! Take him if you can
Dr. Mortensen runs his class how a teacher should. He uses every minute of every class to teach. He only gives 4 tests worth 85% of your grade, but don't worry; the tests are strait forward. The hw is simple and his test prep material is entirely conducive to the test. The class isn't 'easy', but care at all and you will get the grade you want.
Besides the class being very test heavy, it is enjoyable and Mortensen awards partial credit on all short answers for the exams. His lectures have lots of examples, but he does have a speech issue (don't worry, you'll get used to it after a few classes). He also provides a study guide with step-by-step answers before each exam.
Best math professor. he explains concepts really well and provides good examples. He provides a study guide before each Exam and the TA's provide example questions before quizzes. Study the material and do the homework and you should be fine. At the end, he does drop some of your low assignments, quiz, and tests so make sure to do all of them.
Professor Mortensen is a great professor. He has a lisp, which makes it slightly difficult to understand him, but he breaks everything down on paper to explains each step. He answers questions if you're confused. Everything on his exams are reasonable if you do the online homeworks and exam preps. He does drops 2-3 lowest homeworks and quizzes.
There's homework after every class, which isn't hard if you pay attention at all. If you know Calc 1 and Calc 2 then this class is pretty easy. Highly recommend him for Calc 3. Runs his class like how a math professor should.
Dr. Mortensen is a great professor with excellent over-the-board skills. He is punctual and effectively uses all available lecture time. The class isn't too difficult, but make sure to take notes and do the homework. It will help a lot on tests. Just send him an email if your can't make his office hours. He's very accommodating.
I love Prof Mortensen! The way he talks may catch you off guard, but youll get used to it. His lectures are really in depth, and you wont have to read the book a lot. Calc 3 gets hard about halfway through, but his lectures soften the blow. His tests are just like the study guide and the quizzes. No tricks, exactly the problems you expect.
Although things started off awkward, Jeff is pretty clear when it comes to his lectures and assignments. Admittedly, doing exams on WebAssign this semester is not my cup of tea, Jeff tried to be accomodating in allowing you to show work. His exams are pretty similar to your homework, so make sure to understand it and you'll be fine.
Dr. Mortensen is a great professor in both applied and pure classes. His lectures are clear and easy to follow. Tests will cover the material taught in class. No curveballs. More importantly, he will go above what is required of the regular professor in answering questions and is very understanding if you need extra time on an assignment.
Mortensen is clear in what he wants on the homework and exams, he is always available to discuss the homework and answers all questions to the best of his ability. He can be too nice, and work a lot of the homework during lecture before the homework is due. Overall really great professor, he really knows his stuff and it shows! Take him if you can!
If you have the chance to take Calc 1 with a different professor, do so. Professor Mortenson, regardless of his teaching quality (which is fine enough), has unrealistic expectations of his students. The class typically has two homework assignments per night, and the curriculum is basically AP calculus but crushed into one semester. It's ridiculous.
Professor Mortensen was a very nice and professional profesor. He always let his students know what the expectations were and was easily accessible outside of class. He makes the study guides for tests super hard but then the tests are actually pretty easy. Would recommend.
Great teacher. I had him for a 5 week summer class and he explained everything he did and never treated anything as trivial. His exams were very fair.
He is a very nice professor. He posts all notes online so class is not required but it was pretty helpful for me! Discussion sections were extremely helpful and the TA does practice problems directly from the homework. There was a lot of homework but it was helpful. He has a practice exam that is identical to the actual exam.
This class is overly hard for a calculus 1 class, the homework is reasonable but the test are complete curveballs that have only some of the stuff on the study guide. The class is really nice about attendance but if you fail one of the test expect to fail.
Good professor, a little hard to understand but you get used to it after awhile. Test are multiple choice and free response. Study guides lined up to an exact. Go to class or you won't pass.
He's a chill guy who wants everyone to succeed. The test was really easy, and he gives almost identical examples for the homework. He is also very lenient on turning in assignments late. Good choice for 420.
What professor did these previous students get? Every positive thing about this person is false. The amount of homework is on par with the 5 other course loads I had. The study guides were so disconnected from the exams that you were better off not reading them.50 practice problems and only 2-4 are similar on the exam. Choose a different professor.
Jeff has an odd speaking style but you will get used to it. There is a lot of homework for the class but keep up and you will be fine. Class is very test heavy so study study study for the 3 midterms and final. Study Guides for the most part line up with Exam but not always. Go to lectures but I skipped discussions and I came out with a high A.
Great professor, post class notes and is very friendly. Study the exam reviews, ask questions and you will do great in the class. He lets you have cheat sheets for each exam. There's only homework and exams that are graded. 2 exams worth 50, homework worth 25 and the final for 25.
He is a very good professor the class was just boring for me. Tests are super important and make up a lot of your grade. Tests are pretty fair, and cheat sheet was allowed but does throw the occasional curveball.
