Very, very helpful!
Good teacher with very clear class instruction. There are NO suprises on tests or due dates.
His study guides are the best I have ever encountered. He really helps you focus on the "important" elements of the class.
He is a great help. He also explains ideas clearly and accuratly. I've never had a teacher that actualy helped me enjoy math!!
jeff would take the time to go over any questions we might have in class or at his office he would explain things then expect the homework to be practice perfect teaching methods
I have a TOUGH time with math anyway, but I had a really tough time in this class. He grades your homework really hard, looks through all the work, and if a step if off, he docks you. I really should have planned more time for this class, but I think Jeff was part of the problem too.
Just plain TERRIBLE! Professor Olsen's teaching methods are ineffective. He makes the class harder than it is!
I have taken 2 online Algebra classes with Prof Olsen. He is very helpful when you have a question and sends emails each week re: your status, etc. He requires you to log in to the math program (Aleks) a certain # of hours per week and the only time you have to go on campus is for the final exam. I would highly recommend this professor!
If you love math-you'll probably like Jeff. If math is your requirement-RUN AWAY!!He is horrible at teaching, at explaning, & at grading. Very helpful if you have questions, but it goes back to his explanations. He thinks like a math geek so he explains like a math geek & a majority of us are NOT math geeks. Nice guy, but not a good prof.
Jeff Olsen is a good math teacher. He has fun teaching, and it is relatively easy to get a good grade with a little study and effort.
Took Math 096 online & chose this prof because he was great for Math 095. The Aleks program that is used is fantastic. Math has always been a struggle but thanks to the program & teacher I feel that I can be successful in my future math courses. I can't speak for him in lecture format, but he's very helpful as an online prof. Highly recommended.
This professor does try. However his teaching methods are only for thoes who think like he does. If you eat, work, and dream about math you may just pass his class. 90% of the class I took from him dropped before the end of the semester. I would think twice before choosing Jeff Olsen.
Too strict
DO NOT TAKE MATH WITH JEFF!! He goes through the material SOO fast and is tests are so hard!! THe majority of the class got F's me and the six kids sitting around me dropped out!! I talked to many kids in the tutoring center who had him for other levels of math and agreed with me that he is NOT a good teacher! Dont waste your money
He is the best math teacher I've had. I am TERRIBLE at math! He ALWAYS explains in detail, will stay after to help, or refers you for extra help. His class is hard b/c you have to be ready for the next level. But he gives work &tests that are 100% related to what you are learning and if you do the study guides and homework you can pass.
This instructor is very smart, but too smart. He doesn't know how to dumb the class down. He and several others co-wrote the text book and it is useless. There is no explanation for anything. I do not recommend tanking a class from Jeff unless it has to do with fluid dynamics. He refuses to answer questions in class.
I have been out of school for over 20 years. The first semester I did ok in math and this semester I have Jeff Olsen. It looks like I will be droping this class the last 4 weeks of school. He is just too tough to follow. Great guy, just not good at instruction.
this teacher is hard, useless, skims through everything so fast that he doesnt find time to actually explain the material that is being taught, and basically summarizes everything as if you were upto his level already.....I honestly wouldn't recommend him...stay away if possible....
DNT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!!!
Jeff was, to me, a good professor. I saw the other ratings and found it hard to believe how low the ratings are. Sure, he can be a tad strict and picky, but if they aren't then it will make anyone procastinate. He opened my eyes on how math works. he shows different methods of how to do a problem and tells you why its done the way its done.
This teacher was very hard to work with. His sister-site, "moodle" is very confusing. I don't see why he doesn't use angel. He will not tell you tour grade but just point you to a wacked formula to formulate your grade. That'll take you about 20 mins to figure. I would not reccomend this teacher to anyone. He wasn't a help at all, and when I asked he would direct me to a book I didn't understand.
Absolutely useless. Very condescending attitude. He offers no help or instruction and expects an online system to do all of his work. Don't ask him questions because he will just think he's better than you and not help you find the answer.
THE ABSOLUTE WORST MATH INSTRUCTER YOU COULD ASK FOR. DO NOT TAKE JEFF IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADE. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED. JEFF < AN INSTRUCTOR.
When I signed up for Prof Olsen I was scared b/c of his previous ratings. He is a really good teacher. He creates note outlines for you so that you can follow in class. He can move a bit fast at times but is ALWAYS available for questions and help outside of class. He also emails back within an hour any time of day. You are going to have to study.
He is a very condescending instructor. He is very smart and im sure would be a great instrcutor for those who excel in math, but for those who struggle like me then he is the WORST
Not a good teacher. Very hard to understand, did not explain how to work out problems, did not use textbook (which was useless anyways). Very condescending, over all a rude teacher.
Jeff is a good teacher. He uses outlines so you can follow him through his powerpoint. he rarely uses the textbook, but it gives you a lot of practice. I tend to go to the tutoring center almost 3x/week for this class.
real good, very impersonable
If youre bad at math dont take this class. Jeff is almost too smart to teach math 126 and assumes everyone gets what he teaches instantly. Kinda nice guy and makes geeky jokes :) His tests are freakn hard and doesnt give out practice problems just notes on what to study. If u depend on mymathlab to help you dont take this class,he doesnt use it UGH
If you take his class you will know 126 very well because you will take it twice. Wicked hard! His studyguides basically say know everything you were taught inside and out. I've never worked harder for poor results. Nice guy but not recommended.
The best math teacher I have ever had. He is very helpful and he always compliments my accomplishments in the class.
Jeff is a great teacher. He uses real world applications for most of the stuff you learn, and he's always available for help when you need it. He even makes videos and posts them online so you can watch them at home. You'll have to study to get a good grade, but shouldn't you have to?
DONT DO IT . HE IS NOT HELPFUL AND YOU HAVE TO PRINT OUT SOOOOOOO MUCH PAPER. everyday you have 2 have 2 hw done & there is additional webwork. so much hw for only 12 percent of grade. its horrible!
Beware! Tons of homework that's only worth 12% of grade. Harsh grader. Explains everything in so many different ways you get lost. Wants every detail of every problem shown of you will be marked down significantly!
Olsen wasn't a bad professor by any means, but you absolutely HAVE to go to class and pay attention. I had to miss ONE class for a wedding and felt so behind when I got back. This is not a "teach yourself" class, unless Pre-Cal is your thing. I recommend this professor if you absolutely have to take Pre-Cal.
Mr Olsen is a very smart person and seems to be bored teaching remedial math classes. He often uses material that is beyond the requirements for the course and not in the textbook. He may be a better choice for high section courses.
Mr Olsen is a very smart person and seems to be bored teaching remedial math classes. He often uses material that is beyond the requirements for the course and not in the textbook. He may be a better choice for high section courses. He is always availble to help but do not miss class.
Mr Olsen is a very difficult teacher. He gives LOTS of homework and often times teaches above the curriculum lvl. He's a very strict grader and has very little personality. His study guides consist of telling you to review previous homework. If math doesn't come easy to you, avoid taking his class. It seemed as if half the class dropped the class!
Jeff is an excellent instructor. He always responds to emails, encourages students to ask questions, willingly explains things, and gives a personal progress report and praise at the end of each objective. He has never made me feel inadequate or stupid despite how difficult Math is for me sometimes. Highly Recommend!
Jeff is a great teacher if you are willing to put in the effort. He actually wants you to learn the material so you have a foundation for future classes. It can be difficult but he is very willing to help if you seek it from him. Responds to ALL emails and is available for office hours. He wants students to succeed. I got a high B
Mr Olsen is very helpful. Even if its a weekend he would reply to my inbox messages. I think this is very important in that way we are able to proceed with the other topics rather than getting stuck in a topic and wait
I'll try to keep this as objective as possible. Be very careful when taking this class. Jeff teaches way above the content and the tests include problems that we had never seen while studying the material. His manner is awkward and makes him seem dismissive and unapproachable. 68% of your grade is determined only after it's too late to drop.
If you have a hard time at math this is not the teacher for you. I work full time and this was the only time slot available. Past math classes I have had used MY MATH LAB. Which has a help button. This teacher does not use this, he uses a different online technique that doesn't give help option. Let me say again ALOT of HW. I could not keep up.
Jeff was a great instructor. Very thorough, but if your not willing to put in the time and effort then look for someone else. Yeah he gives homework, but it is so you understand the concepts. Best advise, go to class, take notes, do home work, use his office hours. If you put in the effort he will help you succeed!
Jeff has a very dry personality, which makes lecture dull and painful. The exams were never consistent with the massive homework. I barely passed his class with a C. I received A's in 96, 126, and 127 in the semesters following his class. Worst math teacher I've ever had.
Mr Olsen is probably a high level math teacher that is bored teaching lower level classes. He assigns massive homework that is worth only 12% of the grade. It is a fast paced class that covers too much in too little time. His examples in class are not explained will as he like to take short cut with little explanation. He's a very tough grader.
He is a horrible Elementry Algebra teacher. He teaches way above the skill level Avoid his class.
He is tough but fair. He is very responsive to questions.
He is always willing to help, but the class goes so fast that if you don't get something, it would be better if you start looking for help.
Okay so I have taken Jeff Olsen's 095, 096, and now I am about to take his 126 class. He is the only teacher in my 24 years that has been able to explain math in a way that i can understand it. Anyone who says he does not give good feedback, or feels that he doesn't explain the topics thoroughly does not take the time to actually ask him questions.
He was one of the worst teachers I have ever had by far. He is not understanding and not clear. he sidetracks and begins to teach subject that are not relevant to Math 96 and will tell you. Expect to have a rough semester if you take him. Not military friendly!
There is quite a bit of homework but if you do it, the tests are no problem.
He was a pretty good teacher. But you can't expect him to hold your hand through the class. If you don't understand math very well, then do the reading. Ask questions. And show up to class. He genuinely enjoys math and I think he wants other people to enjoy it too. So show that you want a good grade and he will help you understand the material.
Jeff loves math and you can really tell in his lectures but man this guys class is really hard. You will have two assignments due per class period. One online using WebWork and you will have one paper assignment 10-15 questions usually. You will have to study really hard and know the material. no cheat sheat at all on exams. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
gives way too many tests! Ten homework assignments plus six quizzes, and if you don't score above a 85%, you have to retake until you do. I ended up taking a certain test 17 times before i passed! He explained some problems in a way that I just didn't understand. I know other people that had a rough time in his class as well.
Jeff is a math whiz and he uses a lot of real life examples that helped me to understand the material. If you don't get it, he will walk you through it until you do. Utilize his office hours, doe reading and the homework and you will do well!
The WORST teacher I have ever had. I spent over 20 hours every week to complete the online hw and tests. I have taken anatomy, biology classes and this was the most time consuming class ever. He will respond to messages in the middle of the night and has a way of writing his messages to make you feel very dumb. DO NOT TAKE
If you struggle with Math & need more of clarity. I should suggest not taking his class. This has been one of the toughest class I've taken, not to mention it was only math 96. His way of teaching is the way to go even on exams and will mark you down if you solve a problem your way. Just complete disaster. Boring and very difficult!
Jeff Olsen is really passionate about math to the extremity that he does not allow any time in his class for questions. He is the most frustrating professor I have ever had. He teaches as though we are getting a masters in Mathematics. I would highly recommend NOT taking this class.
Class starts off rough unless you are already familiar with algebra. The online assignments do not require that expensive math software, it's free. Somewhat used the math book. This was my experience for the SPRING term. A great teacher and he responds to questions after and during class.
It was painful sitting through his lectures. He would hardly finish a full sentence or just mumble the last bit, as if everyone understood what he was going to say, despite everyone being there to learn. No notes of any kind were allowed on the test. The stuff he told us to memorized before the test were hardly needed
I would recommend Jeff Olsen to anyone who would like to really learn the material. If you are just trying to knock a class out of the way then you may want someone else. His class is informative and interesting. If you take the time to try and understand, he is always willing to help. He isn't the laugh a minute type so don't expect that.
The professor is good at getting back to you and very helpful. However, the requirement of work is alright if you hate sleep and have no life outside of college, without a job. The minimum requirement is ridiculously high, more than 5 of my other classes combined one being an English class with intensive writing.
Jeff is a very smart man, but hes just not the teacher for me. I have always struggled with math and taking this class i only remembered less then half of the material i learned the entire semester. I just wish he had better study guides for the test and just didn't predict that we know everything he is talking about. Break down the material!!!
Mr. Olsen is a fantastic teacher. He is passionate and it shows in his style of teaching. If you are out to just pass a class then you might try someone else, but you really want to learn and retain the information then he is the person for you. He gives a lot of work, but provides all the tools to succeed and is always willing to help.
He's definitely a smart man and passionate about math but his teaching methods aren't the best. I agree with his overall rating on here. If you take his class be prepared to study extensively outside of class.
Attendance optional. Verryy monotoned, which makes lectures boring. His class was okay, (normal amount of homework/tests) but I already understood most of the concepts going in, so that's a big factor of why I passed. If you already know the material, then it shouldn't be hard to pass. Otherwise, you'll probably struggle just because it's so boring
Professor doesn't not care about his students or weather understand the material goes very fast and explains in a very difficult manner
Jeff is incredibly smart but so much that he doesn't know how to dumb down the class for people to actually understand. During lectures he continuously goes off topic talking about higher level classes which makes it very confusing. When I asked for help he sent me a referral to the tutoring center. He goes above and beyond the problems in the book
Jeff gives a lot of homework. The lectures in class don't make sense and makes it very hard to learn. If you have a question be prepared for him to look right over you without noticing you. He says there isn't enough time for him to answer questions in class. The only time he is available to help is right before class. be prepared to be ignored.
There is a lot of homework. Everything is posted and even can be worked on ahead if you wish to. Very well explained and tries to help everyone understand the material and be prepared for tests. Even has in class review days. Just got back into school after 13 years and this class made me feel at ease on learning math again.
VERY difficult math class especially for just a core class. Jeff gives notes every class then expects you to excel at the homework and ace the exams. Doesnt care if his students pass. STRICT grader. 5 exams. I would never recommend this class. He states in his syllabus that he has no sympathy for people who arent good at math. Go teach 126, Jeff.
I've always had trouble with math, and this guy doesn't make it any better. On the tests for example, if you solve the problem in your own way but still get the wrong answer. He will knock you down points. It's ridiculous and extremely unfair. Get out if you find your self in this class.
Extremely difficult tests. Easy to contact and receive help when needed.
He has a very monotone voice, over-complicates things, and if you want to follow everything he says be prepared to spend lots of money on printing lecture notes also print out your homework. you won't really need to use the textbook, he doesn't require it but if you don't know what you are doing the textbook will be easier to understand than him.
I had four semesters with him, and I've never had a teacher I liked as much as him! I went from dreading, to majoring in, math because of his infectious enthusiasm. He admits he's a harder grader, but listen to the amount of times he mentions some technicality and you'll realize you really do learn more. Solutions posted after grades. Enroll!
A lot of people say hes boring and does make sense when he teaches. Jeff was the first math teacher Ive ever had that explained it in a way I understood. Its hard to catch up if you miss class but overall I really enjoyed his class.
I'm not good at math; was a bit scared about getting him. Anyhow, I think he's GREAT! I read he gives a lot of HW. That's not true. The only HW you turn in is the one you print out. The rest are practice problems. He explains things good, does help you, and doesn't grade hard. He doesn't use the book. I recommend printing lectures. Very helpful.
Mr. Olsen is a great teacher. He is thorough, helpful, and is willing to explain everything in detail. The way he explains the material makes sense, and he makes it easy to understand. Mr. Olsen is very prepared and thorough - he wants you to pass the class, and he makes sure you have all the tools to do so.
Mr. Olsen is a great teacher, and he explains the material thoroughly. He is always willing to go into detail when it comes to the material. He is extremely prepared and gives you all the necessary tools you need to pass his class. It is not recommended to miss a day of class.
If math is your Weakness, I would not recommend taking Olsen. The lectures in class don't match with the HW he has you Print and Complete BEFORE that days lesson. Almost every class we stayed about 10 min late for him to finish lecture. He DOES NOT use Mymathlab.
He can't answer questions when you're lost. He grades extremely unfair and difficult especially on HW. You have about 4-5 tests that weigh heavily on your grade. He also doesn't input scores into webcampus and makes you calculate your grade through out the semester. DO NOT recommend him especially if math is your weakest subject.
He is a nice yet borning professor. Do not take this class if you are not willing to spend a vigorous amount of time teaching yourself most of his lectures. He doesn't use any online stuff like MyMathLab or ALEKS, but he just purely relies on textbooks. The homework barely correlates with his lectures and you are graded mostly on tests.
Omg no class in my entire life has ever made me feel so stupid ever omg Ive never done so terribly in math in my life until this class If you dont understand math the first time around 100% dont take this class pls
Dr. Olsen knows a lot about math, but doesn't pass it on very well. If you don't write your problems and answers out the way HE wants you to he'll mark you wrong even if it's right. No calculators on exams, HW jumps in difficulty compared to lecture, skips steps while working out problems, just pushes students on to tutors when they're struggling.
Although, hes brilliant at math, he doesnt teach it very well. Im good at math and was working 14hrs per week on the homework, which was very different from his lecture. I once went to 3 other math professors for help and none of them could solve the problem. I went to him when I knew I was struggling, and he said I needed to figure it out.
I took this class and was struggling but still showed up and turned in my homework. Well now with the virus(online now) I'm struggling more and he won't help me. i asked for extra credit and he won't give me any. before this i asked tutors& other math professors and they didn't understand either. HORRIBLE, MISERABLE CLASS should not teach anymore.
Every Monday and Wednesday one homework assignment is due. The assignments typically have 10ish problems. The semester will have up 4 exams I believe. It is important that you watch the lectures because some of the problems are the same as the ones in the lecture. He has peer help discussion posts as well.
The class is extremely organized and well-structured. Olsen gives take home exams along with homework on Mondays and Wednesdays. Those who gave him a poor rating more than likely didn't put in the work. Yes, the course is very involved. It's math folks! Time to buck up. At the end of the day, he teaches well and is willing to help.
Worst professor he does not help or do any online classes when he is supposed to.
This is the worst math class ever. Lectures are hard to follow, no helpful feedback is given after tests and the professor is not accommodating at all.
Jeff is decent. If you did well in and took algebra 2 recently, you'll do alright. otherwise, find a different professor. He's nice and will try to help you the best he can but PLEASE go to the tutoring center anyways because he is often confusing. he relates everything to classes you may or may not take later on and that gets very boring.
Professor Olsen was by far the best math teacher I had. He's very helpful when it comes to homework and questions. You can reach him almost anytime of the day and any day of the week. He's very smart and although he could go very fast at some points, you can always ask him your questions after class and he will help you understand it step-by-step.
Jeff Olsen, is awesome, he works harder than any of my professors. He answers emails right away and he likes to help his students understand the problem. As long as you pay attention in class you'll be fine. And if you have questions about any math problems just ask Prof. Olsen.
Professor Olsen, as a person is respectful. He will do what he can to help. However, whilst his character his exceptional his ability and methods to teach are subpar. Olsen teaches in a style as if he expects you to already understand the material, he has little to no leeway and is hard to follow, most students I spoke with were or had failed.
he is tough to follow and goes off on random tangents not pertaining to his teaching. tuff when it comes to testing no leniency.
Olsen was great. He is cool and helpful outside of class. He thoroughly broke down math problems to help understand what is going on. If you also need help doing homework at home, email him, and he will quickly respond with an explanation to the problem you might have. Had a good experience.
Too smart for his own good. Not a fan of his class. Very nice person though
I loved Professor Olsen. He is great at teaching and explaining, and what I love most is that Whatever he gives you on the study guide is on the test. His exams are fairly easy, as long as you study and pay attention to class. he also responds to emails very quickly. Definitely recommend.
Olsen is a cool person but the lectures are very dull.
He's a very cool person, but not a good professor. Only 8 people in my class passed and the rest gave up. His lectures are boring. If you don't do it “his way” on a test, be prepared for no points ! You can do late work for homework since its online.
One of the most overwhelming professors I have ever had. I did good, but I never want to go back. There was so much homework + he made his own paper homeworks because he doesn't think 30 questions is enough homework for you. He is extremely engineering based, so test questions are confusing. If you fail one test, you'll need to do extra work!!!
He was mean, and favored people eating during exams over those who studied
Professor Olsen was very hard to follow his way of teaching left students confused and would talk about random things that wouldn't pertain to the class material. It often appeared that when a student was confused or lost he would move on to the next question without addressing their concerns. Overall it was terrible class and wouldn't recommend.
Olsen is a very tough grader. Not easy to follow along with his lectures and would go off on random rants about other things that didn't apply to the class. He is a nice professor just hard to follow along with and very homework/exam heavy.
Don't suggest him. He didn't teach you anything. He just did the work and expected you to know. He expected you to show up to Class and you should know what you're doing. He favored people. Lots of homework and you will never get 100% on homework, or even anything. When u ask him a question on something, he doesn't explain his answer. Don't takes
nothing really to say about Olsen, good guy as a person but his classes, completely different every day you had class there was 4 homework assignments and these consisted of 2 online and 2 written, homework, his HW alone was 6-9 hours a day, and super harsh grading on exams. if your not good at Math, don't take his class, or get good quick.
