He's a great teacher! Laid back, enthusiastic and fair. Pgm changed for better.
Jeff is the best. I disagree with the other rater about the laid back though; he's not laid back at all, but very enthusiastic.
Jeff is the best teacher at CSUS and the best teacher I've taken a class from ever. He has made me want to take more chemistry classes, and this is from a person who never had chemistry. He explains things so well, and he is very enthusiastic. Very cool
wonderful
were the last people that rated Jeff paid by him or was it Jeff himself, anyways the class was a complete joke with no structure. I'm disappointed in the curriculm of the chem dept. and those in charge of it
I had to read the book to understand the concepts. The lecture seems to be about practicing intermediate algebra, rather than concepts. However, he is accessible in office hour and seems to care about students. He sometimes berates the students as a whole in class which I found a bit inappropriate.
This forum is meant to be used as a communication system for students to relate pertinent, useful assessments of instructors and their courses. Apparently, some students feel the need to revert to juvenile, bathroom wall postings to make themselves feel better for an obvious lack of success.
I had jeff for chem 1A and really enjoyed having him as a professor. He is clear, helpful, and most of all a person.
You really have to keep up with the lecture or you'll be lost. I found that the text book wasn't much help. His tests were very long, and had questions that were more difficult than sample problems given in class. I think his tests are more difficult than necessary.
His tests are hard and long. Study as you go. Know everything he talks about in class and you will do fine.
I can really appreciate Jeff's organization - his lab binder and schedule of assignments are very handy, you always know what you will be expected to do in class and lab. My only problem is that I have a different professor for lab and I think he gives her way too much leeway in how she grades us.
To be quite fair in this arena you will either love him or hate him. Jeff is quite organized in his presentation of the class and in the materials - The Lab manual gets A++. I found him to be a bit full of himself and out of touch with the students that were not in his lab class.
Jeff is EXTREMELY organized, and it's awesome, awesome, awesome!!!!!! He is so clear. Going into this class it looks like a LOT of work, but as long as you read and stay caught up, you'll do great. Basically everything is organized for you! He's very fair and helpful. I didn't like chem, now I do!
I would advise taking this class at a JC if possible. Dr. Paradis was pretty clear but seems almost confrontational. If you ask a question he feels is dumb he may make fun of you in front of class. The tests are unneccearily hard and made to confuse. You must do well on the first test or your semester is lost. Make sure you study a lot.

Hard material made harder by his lecture style. He would get frusterated when the class did not understand what he was teaching. Unclear and very hard to follow.
This class was extremely hard. No curve, the prelabs take at least 45 minutes to complete, but I would say the average length was closer to 1.5 hours. The test were very hard. Take it over summer with Dr. Bender @ City. Bender is by far the coolest and funniest and nicest and bestest chem teacher I ever had.
I grumbled about purchasing the lab manual but it is WELL organized and I find it very helpful. Though when it comes to lecture, I often wonder why the hell I just spent 50 mins of my day listening to Jeff. For everything he says that makes sense and doesn't need to be gone over in lab, there are about three things that make you go, "huh"?! Either 50 mins isn't long enough or he needs to be as organized in lecture as his lab manual is!!!
Dr. Paradis is a decent professor. He clearly knows the material but can be easily frustrated by students who are not where he thinks they should be with the material. At times, he can be tough to talk to because he often seems rushed. Overall, he is a good teacher and wants students to be successful.
I totally have a nerd crush on this guy.....really funny teacher and he is really excited about his students understanding the material. He may seem rushed sometimes - but look at how many people he is trying to deal with! I think he is doing a great job. His humor and smarts make him super sexy!
I have to agree with most of the rest of these statements. On one hand he slaps us on the hand for not asking questions an in the next breath he is criticizing us for the questions we ask. One on one he is a bit condescending. He is very difficult to reach for office hours. I would recommend e-mail as the best way to reach him. The material is
Jeff is a fine teacher. His workbook is well organized; the binding is cheap, but he's having that fixed. There was a lot of work to turn in, but that just means if you plug away, you have a better chance at a good grade. Basically, if you come to class, listen to lecture and do the reading, you'll be all right. He's smart, kind, helpful and funny.
had him for chem 1b. the class is hard no matter what you do or who teaches it. but i dont think anyone else would have done a better job teaching this class. hes fair, and actually cares about his students. he is one of the best teachers i have ever had in any of my classes. he holds high expectations of his students and doesn't "baby" anyone.
He was the worst chemistry professor I've ever had. I enjoyed chemistry before I took this class. During lecture said some wrong information and wrote that on the board, & then wondered why we didn't know it...confused everyone. Pretty much doesn't care if you fail. Is very condescending and rude to students in front of the entire class!
He knows his stuff but doesn't teach it in a way that is easy for students that aren't familiar with chemistry to understand. About half of his classes don't pass the class. It's not fun.
Jeff is a fantastic teacher. His expectations of students are high, but fair. He goes way out of his way to try and help people pass the class. Lots of opportunities for extra credit too. I had never had a chemistry class before and I think I got over 100%. I definitely worked at it, but he made it interesting. Favorite class at CSUS so far.
He's so easy to understand and is extremely helpful
He is the most amazing professor!! Its ridiculous how much he truly cares about his students. He goes out of his way to help his students and gives them every opportunity to succeed. Work from previous semesters is shared with the class to practice and preview tests. His lectures are very straight forward and he makes chemistry easy to understand!!
Great Teacher! Lots of fun in class and he really knows how to teach to each and every student. I would take this professor again if I had the chance. You do have to keep up with the material and do all the homework, but if you do all of it, you can easily pass. :)
basically high school chemistry just taught 3x faster. it's a pretty easy class and he teaches really well. this class will help you through about 1/2 - 3/4 of chem 1A so i recommend it to refresh things before you take chem 1A.
Good lookin guy (off the market:-) He's tough but helpful only if you are serious. Dr. P has his bullshyt detector on always. Dont fall behind, ask questions, and see him in his office religiously.
Wow. Easily the most organized and structured class I've ever taken. Has a very straight forward schedule online for each class and due dates for assignments along with handouts. Organized and passionate about teaching. Check out his website for information showing just how passionate he is about teaching. Great professor, take him!
I feel some students give unreasonable ratings. Even though Jeff tends to "throw tantrums" I feel he is very organized, clear and helpful. If a student however has a weak background in chemistry 1A class will be very hard for them (my own experience) but not impossible as long as you take all the advantages of the provided help
You must do the homework. It counts for 10% or the grade. Lab reports can be 15 hours a week total. He is not the best I have seen but also far from the worst. Take good notes, and expect to still read the book. His notes are NOT as good as Dr. Macks slides. So be prepared to read. Note: He may not talk about certain things in detail, but stilltest
Although he can be very insulting to students, he is a good teacher. The material was pretty easy to understand and he explained content pretty thoroughly. While he did encourage questions, he only really wanted to answer question's that he considered to be "good questions". Do the reading and be extremely prepared for exams and you should do fi
Jeff is a really good teacher. He is passionate about what he does. Some days he is rude, but he gets the job done. Everything a professor should be. You do not have to attend every day to do well as long as you keep up. Homework almost everyday. You can't slack off, it will only hurt you in the end. Tests are passable. Best teacher at CSUS so far.
Very good teacher. Explains everything like your a little high schooler. Took this my first semester in college. Very helpful. A lot of homework cause it's online. Helped a lot for CHEM 400.
the class is pretty hard, however if ur willing to put the effort you'll do fine! i got a B+!! very knowledgeable professor! in addition, book is really expensive! 2 rent it at the bookstore it cost $67. go 2 collegebookrenter.com n use promocode; CBR198000 n get $5 off + freeshipn n return! it cost $55 2 rent it.
Jeff is a great teacher and tries to explain problems to you thoroughly. The concepts in the class are hard to learn but the professor tries hard to help you understand them. There are always review days before the tests and opens the class up for any questions on these days. Overall he is a great teacher.
This professor is the best in his field at Sac State. Explains every problem with top quality clarity and if you fail this class, that is your own fault. My only problem is that sometimes he put a question in each exam that we never discussed and expects us to know it.
He is a great teacher and explains every single problem. Do the homework and study and this class will be a guaranteed "B" or "A"
Overall, one of the best professors I have had at Sac State. Difficult subject but he will do everything in his power to help his students succeed! Took him for 2 different chem classes and he was equally helpful in both. Some people don't like him because they think he is too hard but it's the class that's hard, not him!
He can come off as rude sometimes but thats if you make him mad. Besides that he's a great chem teacher. He knows his stuff and can explain concepts easily. The material starts off easy but eventually gets harder. clickers are used in his class for warm up
it was an ok class. clickers are a joke though. you get about two minutes to solve a brand new problem that would usualy take five minutes to solve, so everyone just guesses and loses points. just take chem 1a. this class was pointless.
Dr. Paradis definitely cares about his students. He provides a lot of resources online, so that's really helpful. Uses clickers which I thought was a waste of time but it def shows if you've been keeping up w/ the material.
Amazing teacher! He's clear what is on the tests and puts up multiple practice exams online for you. He is always willing to help and gives you multiple resources to succeed in his class.Do the readings, homework, take good notes, set up a study group, and do the pratice exams!A good class to take to get ready for chem1a and a really nice guy.
ALways do the practice exams because they are similiar to the actual exams. He is always willing to help. He is really organzied and super nice. Towards the end he doesnt teach properly because he wants his kids to be prepared for chem1A. I would recommend him. I just wish he taught the HARD material because i cant learn on my own
I loved this class, Dr. Paradis definitely changed my opinion on chemistry (at least for the time being). He's extremely helpful and genuinely cares about his students. I'd take him again. Honestly, people who say to avoid it because it's too hard obviously don't try. It's all do-able. You just have to allow time to do it, I liked him a lot.
Very good teacher, highly recommend, pay attention in his lectures and do all the hw and practice exams he assigns and you should at least get a C in the class.
Dr. Paradis is a great professor. It is obvious he is passionate about having his students succeed. Very straightforward, assigns homework relevant to what will be on the test, approachable, and gives tons of resources to do well on the test. Be warned, this class is not an easy A so to speak, what you put in is what you will get out.
Easy class and midterms are fairly similar to his practice midterms.
Dr.Paradis is an awesome teacher. He really cares about his students. There are so many resources available that it seems almost impossible to fail this class. Take advantage of lecture, office hours, and resources. You're garaunteed to pass. As for the work load, with every science class you have alot of work, this one is no different. It's just requires basic math skills and discipline.
LOVED THIS PROFESSOR! I had him for two classes my freshman year, he made my transition to college exciting! He is SUPER HELPFUL! pay attention, try your best, and don't be afraid to ask for help and you will pass! Chemistry is a difficult course, but if you put 100% into your time management and study habits for this course it pays off! LOVED HIM!
He is awesome and very knowledgeable teacher. He is so passionate to teach and very organized and well prepared for each class session. The class is not hard if you study. You have to study hard and be prepared for each class session. If you do that you pass the class with no problem. Good luck!
He's REALLLY REALLLLLLLYYYYYY GGGGOOOOOOODDDDDD!!!!!! I've always had a hard time with chemistry but I'm fortunate enough to have a great teacher. Always there to help you in any possible way; has office hours as well as PLENTY resources to give you another hand in passing the class. Incredible teacher!
Dr. Paradis is an excellent professor. He makes the class enjoyable and gives you all of the resources you need to succeed. His tests aren't extremely difficult if you study and complete all of the practice exams. The online homework is simple and it is easy to get over 100% on each assignment. He is by far the best chemistry professor out there!
Professor PARADIS IS AWESOME. very helpful. I recommand you to attend his office hours AND HIS CLASS! He loves to help so dnt B shy. Join his commit to study contract! Paradis is also very organized! he tells you whats on the exams, the agenda for every class session, funny and the BEST!!!! JUST AWESOME! Get bradley Perek for PAL leader-helpful
The best professor by far that I've had since my stay at Sac State. Clear, helpful, nice, and interesting. Has his own calender and materials in which help you succeed as well as a process in which you follow the path he sets out for you and do your work, you pass the class easily. Highly recommended!
This guy is something else. His teaching is 100% perfect and I wish I can have him as my teacher for every single class whether it's science or not. He's also very kind hearted and understanding. I had some personal issues and he put that into consideration for my grade in some assignments.
Absolutely fantastic. He is the most passionate prof I've had. I loved his class, and working with him is great. Clickers might seem pointless to some, but as a student assistant, I can say they provide really great teaching data. Do what he says, it's in your best interest. He gives you everything you need to succeed, just do the work!!!!
After 6 semesters at Sacstate he is still hands down my favorite professor. He makes the material easy to understand and you can tell he really passionate about it. Highly recommended.
Amazing professor, definitely recommend. He is so passionate and really cares about each individual's concerns. The PAL sessions are very helpful as well.
AMAZING. He really made me love chem. He was so helpful, and such a great professor. For such a scary subject, he makes it so much better. He has the best organization out of any professor I've ever had. I just wish he taught chem 1a. Love him!
paradise is such a great professor! He is straight forward! 1quiz, 3 exams & 1 final ALL WITH MULTIPLE PRACTICE TESTS. Daily clicker questions based on assigned reading and online homework after every class! This was my favorite and very chill class! Easy A if you simply keep up with the material! Very friendly and positive guy!
I LOVE Jeff Paradis! By far one of my favorite professors at Sac State! He is kind, very caring, helpful, wise, and informative. I would take this class over again if I had to! He's incredible! Just know you can't skip class and you can't skip assignments. It's a ton of busy work but it's worth it. He's a wonderful teacher!!!
Dr. Paradis is such a great professor. He clearly knows the subject matter and does an exceptional job at presenting the material to his students. Very approachable and kind, all he wants is for everyone to succeed, you just have to put the work in. I feel prepared for 1A. It's a shame he's not instructing it. Take him, you won't regret it!
He truly cares about your success
Jeff is an amazing professor. He truly cares about students' success. He tries his best to be as clear as possible in all subjects. For exams he gives four practice tests so you'll know what to expect. Attendance is required because there are several clicker questions every class worth points. I would definitely not mind having him again.
Dr. Jeff Paradis, preferably asks his students to call him Jeff instead of professor, how humbling! I call him professor though bc I really respect him. Jeff is a very passionate speaker not only about chemistry but also mainly on his students' success. Read book, go to class, pay attention, do hw & practice exams & it'll guarantee a B or higher!
Professor Paradis gives students the option to call him Jeff. He is very humble and very understanding. To do well in his class, you must read and take notes on your own. He gives 1 quiz, 3 exams, and 1 final. He gives out 4 practice exams to help you study for each exam. He wants his students to succeed.
He's very supportive and know the materials well. You can visit his office hours if you struggle in lecture. The test is abit challenge but straight forward from the practice exam. However, the class are very impacted by students and others. Everything count in his class. I suggest taken the Chem diagnostic to pass Chem 4.
Jeff is awesome. He always makes sure you know that he is there for you. His number one goal is for his students to pass the class. He provides multiple resources at your disposal and does everything he can to help you understand the material. You don't have to be there, but you'll miss out on points if you don't. I would definitely take him again.
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about the teacher. in fact he is amazing. But the way he does homework is ridiculous. Mastering Chemistry is SO unhelpful. If you get and answer wrong, it wont tell you what you did, so you have to know your stuff before you do anything. Just a fair warning to other students.
Great teacher. Anyone that tells you otherwise is insane. He is very organized, you know what you need to do. You won't find surprises on exams he gives you study guides that are almost identical just switches it up a bit. Homework is easy though Mastering chem can be a pain but he gives extra credit. Overall just do the work and you'll pass.
This is a study heavy class, you HAVE to STUDY. I was a freshman when I took this course and I was completely overwhelmed, don't take this class your first semester, take it a following semester once you've experienced a piece of college. He gives one test on the periodic table and five exams. The test was easy but all the exams are very difficult.
He is a great professor, he explain the material really well and during class time he goes around helping students make sure they understand the material. At the same time you need to make sure you are reading the book he does quiz on the reading if you don't do your part then you pass, he can't make you pass. If you actually try you will pass.
He is an amazing professor and if you follow the lessons and readings he assigns, it's very easy to pass with a B or better. And ask questions when you need to, he'll help you until you understand. Attend office hours, he's super helpful and kind too. Everything is laid out for you to pass :D Honestly, I really wish he would teach Chem 1A.
This course was SUPER EASY, especially for Bio/Chem majors! Dr. Paradis is a very well-educated professor who want his students to succeed. He provides a commit to study contract the boost your grade up by one level (e.g. B+ goes to A-) ONLY if you do not break the contract. I didn't take the contract because I simply didn't need it (:
Read the assigned chapters before the class and take notes. Memories all the element namings. Take the practice exams very seriously.
Take the practice tests seriously and make sure you know your elements and polyatomics and if you just do everything he tells you and you are prepared for the class you will do fine he is a great guy and is very supportive
Paradis is very caring towards his students. He makes sure that he can help everyone as much as possible. Be ready to memorize a LOT of stuff or else, you won't pass. Homework is online, due before 7am everyday. He expects everyone to come to class prepared, which means you need to read the textbook. He will go over the readings in class.
Chemistry is pretty hard. There is a lot of memorization, but the class is easy to pass if you go. He does questions in class that are part of your grade, and these questions are very helpful. Tests are kinda hard. Do the homework and go to class everyday and you'll be good !
Awesome Prof! Class was super easy if you studied from the start because everything connects. So if you failed, you're at fault for it. 3 exams + final, HW online (3 per week but easy ), able to clarify things, clicker questions so attendance is a must, book is needed (take notes!!!), study contract (bump letter grade up), consider PAL class
He was a great professor and was always caring for his students. He would go above and beyond to help those students struggling by providing resources, open office hours with him or the PAL. The textbook reading does help so make that a must or else it will be impossible to keep up with his class and skipping class will cost you points too.
Hes an excellent professor who cares a lot and definitely pushes you to stay on track. I absolutely adored him. His material wasnt too difficult and the homework wasnt either. Study hard for the exams and the assignments that are weighed more. Do the contact! Its super easy to keep it and it gives you a grade bump so why not .
AMAZING Chem professor. Very organized, clearly shows what you need to know through practice tests and practice problems. If you attend class, pay attention, and do the HW, it's an easy course.
Best professor ever! Very organized. Clearly explains the subject thoroughly (basically dumb it down for you). Gives you all the resources you need to pass his class. If you pay attention, do the work, memorize what he assigns and study the practice exams then you'll easily pass the course. My best advice is don't skip his classes. You'll regret it
GREAT chem professor. I suggest taking a PAL, 1 unit class to reinforce concepts. Textbook needed for online daily clicker questions/mastering chemistry hw and reading assignments. 3 exams (100pts ea.) 1 cumulative final (200pts). He raises your grade at the end of the semester if you do all exam corrections.
Since this is a lecture-only class, you need to go to class and participate. Try to actually learn in this class because it is slow-paced and helps you understand the math in chemistry very easily. Do the homework and extra credit. Also, don't forget about the Commit-to-study contract, really boosts your grade but make sure to do test corrections.
Jeff is an exact definition of what I would like to see in a teacher. He lays everything out at the beginning of class and you know what you have to do. He makes every effort to ensure every student has every resource available to them and goes far beyond his duties as a professor. He really wants to see the students succeed.
Great teaching style and clear explanations. Encourages questions and explains the answers thoughtfully and understandably. Do the work and ask questions if you're stuck and you'll pass.
Amazing guy, he is always there if you need help and gives lots of resources if you need extra help. He encourages using his office hours so dont be scared to go get extra help.
Best professor on campus. Actually cares about you and will help you. Prepares you very well for the next chem class. Highly recommend.
Really does a good job of teaching you the basics to chemistry. He makes complicated concepts very easy to understand. Highly recommend for an introductory chemistry course.
Makes chemistry very easy for the students. Plenty of office hours so you can ask your hw questions. Very approachable professor because he really does care about his students. I cant think of a single flaw for his class. Absolutely amazing professor. I wish all of my professors were as organized as he is.
Make sure to stay on top of the assigned readings and take thorough notes the night before class. Attend all lectures because he bases attendance on your answers to the clicker questions that he presents on the board. Do all of the practice exams that he offers so that you can get help on what you do not know. Do all of his extra credit!!
Great professor that cares about the students and their grade. The class is made up of three exams with an option to drop your lowest grade exam if you do the commit to study program. The final and exams are very easy because he gives you past exams and finals to study. Gives extra credit on homework. Overall, the best person to take for chem 4.
He is literally so caring and helpful, he gives you so many resources to any and everything. It is HARD to fail, if you skip class ask questions asap and he will help you ! I had him during the semester that the corona virus hit and he is one of the best professors out here !
I took this class to have a better foundation for Chem 1E, glad i did this helped me pass the class. Jeff cares about his students and is passionate, his lectures are very organized, take notes they help a lot. Did read text book and had homework online. Also did in class pop quizzes during lecture to make sure students come. Don't skip class.
(Fall 2019) A great Professor and is passionate about the subject and his students. Allows the lowest test grade (not the final) to be dropped if you do the commit to study program and finish it. Make sure to attend class every day because he sometimes does extra credit days on in-class clicker questions. There is a lot to memorize so do study!
Great Professor. He gives you all the sources you need to earn a good grade. All the work is on you! There are times where he can be impatient when students don't understand the material. Hw everyday. 3 exams and a cumulative final. Attendance is needed since you need to answer questions online during lecture to get points. Very organized.
Dr. Paradis is an excellent teacher, I rate the class difficult in terms of work load.
Dr. Paradis really cares about his students and wants to make sure they understand the material. This was an online course so we had to work with what we had, homework due before class MWF on mastering chemistry. He does review sessions before exams/finals/midterms.
Really cares for his students and is always willing to help
Actually cares about his students, will give you every chance to succeed
