Professor Powell is very nice and personable. Although some of his lectures get borring, he makes the material understandable. He expects you to keep up on the reading (about 1-2 chapters per week). We also had 3 novels to read and write papers on. You will learn alot, but be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing. Overall, fairly easy!
Whats cool about Powell's class is he doesn't just talk at you. His lectures get the class involved. I'm not crazy about history but I liked this class, and if you do the reading its not hard at all.
Good class, fairly interesting material, but the reading that has to be done is what would nromally be expected of 300-level class, the 2nd book is especially confusing. He can be entertaining sometimes though.
Material wise, this class was really interesting. He is a really good professor and wants you to understand. The class load is a pretty lot. There are 3 novels that go along with the text reading and a couple of papers so be prepared to work.
Lots of reading but his lectures are quite interesting. You have to read three books the first is the worst on progressive movement a bit confusing, second on WWII only 105 pgs, the last is a novel quite interesting. Tip for the final research paper start research early or you will be in a tight spot. Don’t repeat my mistake!
He is a really good teacher, and wants to help the class learn (really!). However, there's a lot of reading and two pretty big papers. The class is interesting and can be fun, but not a blow off by any means.
Great class ! He is a great teacher. His lectures get you involved and make you think. Some reading, but if you do it the class is easy. The short stroy is TAKE HIS CLASS !!!!
Good class. You have to read 3 books plus the textbook. Grade is based off of 2 papers 20% each and a midterm and final 30% each. If you like history and you don't mind reading you will probably like this class. The papers were easy but the exams (essay based) can be a bit challenging, however he gives you possible essay Qs before the exam.
I LOVE THIS TEACHERR...HES EASYYY :)
He is a really good lecturer, and he's a very funny guy who loves what he teaches. However, he should be teaching a 300-level course. There's two major papers, and a mid-term and final that's all essay (but you get a study guide). The three books you have to read for the course are not the easiest to read or understand. Good class, not a blow off!
Great Prof. ! Gives review sheets for mid term and final and outlines all the assignments in the syllabus. If you go to class, take notes, and read you will do good. The class requires some work, but he will do every thing to help you .....
I really liked his class. His lecures help out, make sure when you do go to class that you take notes becasue if you have the notes you really will not need the text book too much. He is a really good teacher that explaines things really good and covers everything. Loved the essay test. If you need anything make sure you talk to him! He will listen
Great, great great professor. Loves what he teaches and focuses more on social issues. Isn't your boring date-by-date history professor, examines more important and interesting issues during the era instead. Do the reading, participate in class, and pay attention to his lectures and you'll do fine. Great class!
Very helpful, he always asks if anyone has any questions. Exams are all essays and you must read the books. All in all, it wasn't that hard of a class, but be prepared to read!
He's probably the best professor I've had at Oakland so far. Always willing to help and answer any question. As long as you do the reading and come to class as much as possible, you'll have a good grade. He's very fair with his grading.
This guy is funny as HELL. He's got a GREAT sense of humor and is passionate about history. He is very fair about grading, gives review sheets for tests, no quizzes or homework, and he keeps things interesting with his personality and sense of humor STRONGLY RECCOMENDED!
You will leave this class as a Raging Liberal.
Great Professor! Talked about very interesting topics and presented them in a very interesting way. Always answered questions and hands out the test questions before the test. I Highly recommend taking him as a professor
awesome awesome awesome!
The class is basically two papers, midterm and final. He gives you the questions to the midterm and finals. You have to choose 1 of them, but only 3 appear. Don't think this is easy. You have to include details! And its all essay. The most boring class ever! He's super annoying! He plays with paper clips + rubber bands. Super ANNOYING voice.
FANTASTIC!!!!!
Powell is a really great teacher, and keeps class interesting. He cracks jokes to keep you laughing, and is just really personable. To get a good grade you MUST read. If you do that, you'll do fine.
Lectures were more persuasive and leading, rather than informative. This professor is afraid to award A's so don't expect to get a 4.0 or a 3.7 for that matter. 3 books to read, plus the textbook. All exams are essays, and make sure to come to all of his conclusions if you want to do well. Prof is great in history but needs to study economics.
This was a great class. He is a good lecturer and was a easy grader. This class is an easy 3.5...
I can't believe I'm saying this but I had fun in this class. He's a really good teacher and you learn a lot. He is funny so the class doesn't get boring. One of the best classes I've had at Oakland.
The Best ! This is a must take class. Powell is funny, informative and interesting. He is a fair grader and the class is easy if you do just half the reading. Just go to class and you'll get a 3.7
Didn't like him. Hard Teacher not helpful. Taught 100 level like 300. Made me change my major.
Mr. Powell is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. There is no structure to this class and all of his tests are essays. On top of that, he is kind of a jerk who pretends to be funny, but in reality is mostly mean. His lectures have very little to do with the material and I 100% regret taking this class. I have never felt so behind or lost i
Had him over the summer and it was a great class. He doesn't spoon-out the material, he expects you to be what you are suppost to be , a college student who studies. I loved his humor and thought he was a great teacher. I would say don't take him if you want to be told what to think or want multipule choice exams.
Best class I've had at Oakland. Prf. Powell is smart, funny, and willing to help if you ask. The class is pretty easy only one short paper, a book review exam, a midterm and final. None of the task work like weekly quizes or papers. I learn a lot.
Honestly, Professor Powell doesn't know how to teach a class. He teaches whatever pops into his head at the moment whether it pertains to the material or not. Reading the books are a waste of time because in class you never know what he is talking about. Don't take this class.
Professeur Powell's class seems like a lot in the begining, but as class goes on, you'll see that it becomes easier. If you're not willing to work, then don't take this class. His exams seem hard, but he's a pretty easy grader. He's a Democrat, and I'm a Republican, so he LOVES to talk about the Progressive Movement and the Civil Rights Movement
He's not just a Democrat, he is a raging Liberal and a classic Progressive. Why do you think he talks so much about the Progressive movement? He is recruiting students to join his cause. This should be explained in the course catalog that the "history" he teaches is strongly biased. I can't believe I PAID to be brainwashed. Thanks for nothing, OU!
He is a very good teacher and he does expect you to know half of what he is lecturing about because you are suppost to READ THE BOOKS. His style depends on the students doing the work. Also, he must be good because you think he is a progressive and must have learned what that is.....
This class is great and easy. He gives a review sheet for the mid term and final that have the questions for the test on it ! He is not bias and explains the topics from many different view points. A must take class if you want to learn to think !
Prof. Powell is an extremely interesting guy. A few people say that his lectures are biased, but I did not find it to be so.He just presents several different viewpoints and he really makes you think. If you need to take a history class, take him!
This class was one of my favorite class this semester. I always looked forward to what we were going to talk about. He is a pretty funny guy to. His tests are all essay which i found a little on the hard side, but history is not my best subject. I would TOTALLY recommend this professor, i acutally learned history in this class. He is great!
Someone is deleting the negative comments written about this professor! Very odd. Maybe they don't want others to know how one-sided this professor teaches history. Anyway, if you want to see all the facts distorted to the far-left, this is the guy to take! You'll soon find yourself quoting this professor to others, and not really knowing why.
Tha banter about Powell being biased is silly. He presents both sides and calls out phony political retoric for what it is. The fact that students are thinking about his lectures after class and posting is a sign he is a good teacher.Just because he gives insight into views people may not agree with doesn't make him biased. He is a Great teacher!
I loved this class. Mr. Powell is a wonderful teacher. He explains the issues in a way that makes you think and is very funny. He is very personable and helps you if you need it.
I was suprised how much I enjoyed this class. Powell is great at addressing the issues in lots ways. He will challenge you, not to make you feel bad, but to see if you have information to support what you say. I really liked the debates in this class. I would take him again.
Just the best ! He really makes you think about all kinds of issues. He presents things from different points of view, and although not everyone wants to examin things that are different than they believe, it is very informative, It is the best history class I've taken. He does expect you to study and you need to read the books. He is very helpful.
He has you read multiple books which can sometimes be boring, which are mandatory to read for test. The text book however you don?t have to read he says you do but he give you the midterm essays, so all you have to do is just look up the information in the book and in google. He grades fairly, one time he suggested that he doesn?t really fail peo
He is really nice, but his class is boring. You don't even have to bother going, really. Just know what the tests & papers are on, & that's your grade. He gives you 5 possible essays you need to know, & normally makes you write 2 of them on the test. I ended up with a 3.4, when I barely paid attention or took notes :)
I thought class was alright. I think the teacher made the class rather interesting especially if you don't like history that much. It was a somewhat hard class. Overrall, its a decent class to take and tests are not that hard.
He's an interesting guy and does his best to make lectures fun. Tries to take all viewpoints into consideration when presenting material. He can sound intimidating at times when talking about grades, but I would say he grades fairly. Only gives essay tests, but emails a review sheet of possible questions in advance. Would recommend.
His voice & stockiness remind me of Patton Oswalt. Tells history the way msnbc would love for you to hear it. Doesn't allow students to record his lectures. Why? So no one can find out you've been brainwashing college students? Probably. Argues with you if you disagree with his consensus.
MOST BORING CLASS EVER! He tries hard to be funny. He goes off subject a lot. However, he is very nice and sometimes is an easy grader on exams. A lot of reading!! You read at least two books at a time during the semester.
LOT'S of reading! Fair Grader. Gets off subject a lot but tries to make it interesting. 3 essay test's and one pretty short paper. Read the book's and it's pretty easy. Only complaint is he takes forever to grade tests! Good class overall!
This was a great class. It was my favorite class this semester. Professor Powell doesn't go off topic he relates past events to today. It may seem like he jumps around but he doesn't. I loved his sense of humor and learned a lot in his class. The class isn't hard if you read the textbook.
Almost everyone I spoke to in the class hated him.Barely anyone showed up to class the 2nd part of the semester. He got way off topic, and could be kind of rude. There was really no need to show up for class. However, he was an easy grader. 3 exams (one on the book) and one paper. Overall, easy.
He was my favorite teacher by far at ou first semester. He has a great sense of humor and is extremely intelligent. He gives you plenty of time to read the books so you should b fine. I procrastinated to the max and still ended up with a 3.3, which isn't bad. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Def recommend him, his lectures lay out and they tie in together and make sense. It was very easy to learn and remember based on some of his jokes and stories in class. He does push his opinion on you, talks about UofM alot and if you dont agree wiht what he says then you're just wrong. It is kind of funny, a bit irritating but easy A if you try
I HATED this class!! He constanly went off topic in his lectures and did not explain much of anything. There is ALOT of reading involved with this class We were assigned 5 books one with a written exam to follow. Almost no one went to class unless there was an exam.
Professor Powell is smart, funny, and one of the best instructors I've had at Oakland. He assigned 3 books not 5, and one of the books was a very short fiction novel. But I guess if you don't go to class you wouldn't know that. Also, not going might make it hard to follow the topics.
I was so back and forth. Some days he was great and we learned a lot, other days he was still fun, but we got a little off topic sometimes. He's really good for application of the times, but I don't feel I learned a lot history wise. He sometimes likes to play devils advocate to get to you think more. Overall he was a pretty okay teacher.
He is incredibly politically charged and tries to start debates about things that happened one hundred years ago. Attendance is mandatory so even if you learned history in HS you still have to go. Awful lectures/rants, tries to politically brainwash you despite what he says on the first day. Seems like a nice guy, just not the best prof.
His lectures were funny and I learned a lot of stuff that my other history class just skipped over. It was pretty easy- a book test, a short paper, midterm, and a final. I would recommend taking him.
Decent professor overall. Goes off-topic A LOT and is extremely political. As someone who enjoys history, I was disaapointed cause I wanted to learn, not go into debates. His tests are easy and requires two novels to read.
Take this class if you want to hear Professor Powell's version of American history.
Powell definitely breaks away from the clique of being a boring professor with no sense of humor. He has a down-to-earth personality and is a hardcore U of M fan. His lectures are very intriguing and he usually gets the whole class involved. Overall, very interesting class and great professor. Highly recommend for history gen ed.
I'm not a history major and thought Powell was an amazing prof. This was the most interesting history class I have taken. He makes history relevant to today and makes you think. He is a fair grader you gives you the grade you earn. I would recommend him to anyone who needs to take a history course.
seemed to go off topic many times but always managed to tie it into whatever were were discussing in class. is reasonable on his exams. 3 essay tests and a paper. just answer the who what where when and why's he asks for. very entertaining. doesn't miss a beat. may not seem to be paying attention but sees everything. would take him again.
Workload is ridiculous. This was my last general ed requirement at OU and he treats his history class like they are all history majors. Previous to this class, the lowest grade I got in a gen-ed was a 3.8. Definitely do not take during the summer time. General ed's should be catered to an average level for broad learning. It's for everybody.
At first he rubbed off as a bigot. I immediately decided to drop the class, but by the 3rd class that changed. He is very comical when covering his lecture, it really draws you in. The course include lots of reading. Read the material and you will be fine. His exams are fair, mostly essay questions. I would not advice taking during the summer.
A great professor who is willing to help his students. As long as you show up to class then you should be fine. The questions on his exams are from his lectures. He likes to joke around so that makes the class alot more fun . I highly recommend him.
Read Read Read the textbook each chapter every week. Do not fall behind because you will not have the desire to catch up reading. Exams (multiple choice part) will ask random questions from the readings that was never went over during class. Essays are fairly easy and assigned books aren't too bad of reads. Decent history professor.
Obviously some were sleeping or didn't listen. Powell uses HISTORICAL arguments not his own to help you understand. He explains this clearly,is very liberal and thinks everyone should vote. He is very personable and funny. His lectures are full of info and data He gave extra credit and curved one of our exams. He does everything he can to help you
He tends to get off topic quite a bit, took his class in the summer and the work load was quite a bit, 3 tests and an 8page paper. He is a fair grader but it takes forever to get your grades back, we didnt know what our grades were on our papers until after we took the final. He is interesting but I do not feel like I learned a lot in his class.
kept the class laughing, he is a very good teacher and tries and helps you as much as possible. i want to take one of his classes again, he was that good of a teacher
Not very good professor.Spent 20 mins. out of the hour and 47 mins. talking history. Mostly talked about picking up chicks at the bar, high school dances, and being married. Barley talked about the textbook so I did not feel prepared for the tests. Best part of the class was watching a movie on tupperware. took test on overhead and we all failed.
Outstanding! By far the best professor and class I've had at Oakland. He does a great job of using stories (personal and historical) to help you understand and relate to the course info. Highly recommend.
Keeps the class lively with stories, very conversational. Gets off track easily, but always remembers to get his point across. Makes sure you're prepared for the tests. 3 books (although I read one) and the tests were simple, although the questions were a bit broad and dichotomous in meaning. But recommend, relatively easy and teaches well. : )
STUDY for his exams and know the material. take solid notes and read all the selected reading. Good professor but is tough. There is a paper on a certain topic that he picks and its due 3 weeks before the final. Good Luck!
I thought Powell's class was pretty easy. He gives reviews for the midterm and final, also almost everything you need for the quizzes is in the lectures. I read a lot, but didn't do much studying and got a 3.4. Overall it was a really good class.
The work load in this class for a gen ed is comparable to my 300 level class. He cancelled class day before a test, and would not respond to emails or send email out to class communicating information regarding the test. His tests contained questions from chapters not said would be on there per rubric. Mid term grades are not up 8 days before final
I really enjoyed this class. professor Powell is super smart, funny and nice. He helped out a lot. He gives review sheets for the Midterm and Final and gave extra credit. His lectures are really entertaining.
Professor Powell was a magnificent professor! I looked forward to his class everyday. The lectures were entertaining but very informative. His grading was pretty lenient as well. I made sure to take him again for the winter semester.
Powell is a great teacher who cares about his students doing well. If you stay after to ask questions he is more than happy to answer them. There are 4 exams total and a paper. He has random extra credit. His exams are part multiple choice, mostly essay & short answer. I definitely recommend him!
Powell is a great teacher who cares about his students doing well. If you stay after to ask questions he is more than happy to answer them. There are 4 exams total and a paper. He has random extra credit. His exams are part multiple choice, mostly essay & short answer. I always HATED history until this class. I definitely recommend him!
Absolutely one of the most liberal and inconsiderate teachers I have ever had. I don't mind his liberal views but the way he teachers them, like everyone else is wrong, and so one sided is appalling. If you are any type of conservative you will be offended with the way he teaches. The quizzes and exams are made up of tiny details from the book.
Professor Powell is a very good lecturer and very entertaining. He gives reviews (the exact possible questions) for the midterm and final. His short answer questions are mostly from things that were discussed in class. He gave an extra credit assignment that was for us the listen to Rush Limbaugh so I won't call him overly liberal.
This was my favorite class this semester. Professor Powell was funny and kept the class interesting. 4 multiple choice quizzes, short paper, a mid term and final. He gave bonus points on the midterm and extra credit. I would take him again.
Really good prof. Favorite in three years of school. Really engaging and entertaining, makes material relevant to current events.
He was an outstanding professor. I took this class for a gen ed, but I left wishing I could take more classes with him. He understands that being a professor, he has to make you think - not just memorize facts out of a book. He was extremely nice and funny and made class extremely enjoyable. Very intelligent man. Read the books and go to class.
I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot. A few multiple choice tests, midterm, final, and a short paper. No homework except reading. The things I learned actually helped me in my other classes.
Great class. He is a wonderful professor.
Be ready to take notes on lectures and there is a alot of reading. It's up to you to get the reading done and pay attention to his lectures in order to pass the few quizzes, midterm and final. He can get off topic and go on long tangets but they are usually funny. I think taking this class really does turn you into a well rounded student.
He has the most entertaining lectures. Instead of shooting random facts, he kind of makes it a story. Tests and quizes were hard and the reading was hard. If you read the books and pay attention to lectures, you will be fine. The only thing i don't like about him is I emailed him a question the day before the exam and he never responded.
This was my favorite class this semester. Professor Powell was so entertaining that it made it easy to remember the material. 4 quizzes, Midterm, final, and a short document paper. Gives reviews for the Midterm and Final. He always answers your questions and helps with extra credit.
Excellent professor and I enjoyed the class. 4 multiple choice quizzes mainly on lectures, a short paper, midterm, final, and book review. The class is pretty easy but you will learn a lot.
I took this class as a gen ed and I hate history but Powell made things interesting. His lectures were more like story telling. He found a way to make history interesting and easy to relate to. He's very funny and sometimes get's off on random tangents but they're always worth it. Tests range from easy to moderate. READ THE TEXTBOOK
Powell is a great guy, highly recommend. It is a lot of reading because it's a history class, but his lectures are very interesting and he does a good job preparing you for exams as long as you come to class.
Powell is hilarious and very entertaining. However, if you're over the age of 20 he treats everyone in the class like they are babies and have never done anything in their life except go to high school and college. He is a super nice guy and verrrrry knowledgeable about history, but that seriously drove me bananas.
Honestly Powell is one of the funniest professors I have had so far, he should seriously be a comedian. Although I have never preferred history, this class is engaging and his random tangents keep me interested, it isn't boring. As far as his quizzes and exams, they are quite difficult in my opinion but if you read the book and go to class you good
awesome prof super funny, basically he wants you to pass and you will if you put in the effort tests are easy if you study a little which i didnt do at all and i still got a 3.5
SO FUNNY! He doesn't do powerpoints, just lectures which usually I don't like. But Prof Powell made everything so much fun. I've never liked history before but taking this class really made me wish I could take more classes with him. Don't skip class!
The best ! The class was fun and not very hard. He gave extra credit and helped me a lot. His lectures are like stories, awesome and entertaining.
He is a really entertaining lecturer. He is good at presenting the material from different view points and it really makes you think. He is a fair (easy) grader. It was a great class and I would take him again. 1 short paper, midterm & final, 3 quizzes
I didn't enjoy the way Dr. Powell taught. He talked mostly about Michigan football, his family, and jokes then 30% of the class he discussed material. Powell was my least favorite professor this semester and also the professor who took the longest to put grades into moodle. If you have to take him, you'll be okay, but definitely not #1.
I enjoyed Professor Powell's class. He gives reviews for the midterm and final which helped a lot. The only homework was reading the textbook and a 6 page paper which was due late in the semester. There were also a few short multiple choice quizzes. He is very nice and gives good entertaining lectures which help on the tests if you take notes
Professor Powell is a really good lecturer. He helps a lot worth the readings and if you pay attention to the lecture you only have to skim the readings of the textbook. Overall the class is entertaining and you will learn a lot.
Loved having this professor! Although he does talk a lot about things that don't matter to the class, his lectures are always interesting. If you show up, take some notes and look at the text book you'll do fine!
He is a good professor that is very funny and nice guy, but can get off subject very easily. You need to do all the reading to pass the quizzes and you have to read the two books. I would say the material you need to know comes from the book more then his lectures. Be ready for Michigan football. He is knows his history well!
He gets off topic a lot, but he is very nice and funny. The quizzes are all on what is in the book. He gives mostly lectures and there is a lot of reading. We only had to write one paper that was due near the end of the semester.
He is a little awkward but knows his stuff and he is pretty funny.
HORRIBLE teacher. Great person. Funny, nice, friendly, fun to listen to. Would not recommend. What he lectures is never on the exam. The book exams are difficult, he never helps you with what will be on it. He is very hard on you, and the tests are very short. The midterm and final he gives you a study guide, which helps.
Powell is an excellent professor who makes history interesting and fun. He does a great job of connecting the past with the present. There is no homework but reading and studying & a paper due at the end. Multiple choice tests are the hardest part, but he gives the essay questions in advance for midterm & final. Overall a good easy class.
All he does is lectures and tries to make funny jokes, although, he doesn't take attendance. The only grades were a few exams, a 7 page paper, and the final. The midterm and final exams included essays, short answers, and multiple choice. Did fine in the class but he wants you to put in all the work.
This was one of my favorite classes. Profesor Powell makes the class entertaining and really wants you to do well. A few multiple choice tests which you need to study for but gives review sheets for midterm and final. Not hard at all.
He's ight. You dont have to go to class to do well in this class. Before he gives the final exam he post what to study on moodle.... turns out that is the actual final exam minus the extra credit questions he gives also. He has the abilty to go a whole class period rambling about michigan football BEWARE. Easy class all in all was BANTER.
i liked the class overall but i dont get why he hates answering questions directly. he would go off topic and not lecture on certain things, say he would take them out of the quiz but they were still on there! the quizzes are pretty simple and there was only one essay
Powell is an excellent professor. The class is not difficult if you attend, pay attention, and take some notes. Almost everything on the tests is discussed in class. He gives review sheets for the midterm and final.
You will NEED to read the book chapters he assigns for you, no way to pass without reading. His lectures can be interesting, but he will give his two cents, very liberal. The multiple choice quizzes are tough if you dont read, same goes for the tests. The essay questions are provided before hand, I encourage you to make flash cards for them.
The tests and the essay are your grade. The class is mostly self taught and the lectures are... interesting (in a good way). He does a great job relating the past to the present, he's hilarious, and he's extremely knowledgeable.
Professor Powell is a funny guy and relates history to today's events well, but in the 2 hour lecture he gives, about half of it is actually about history. However, you definitely need to go to class and read the textbook if you want to do well. The class is graded off of a few quizzes and exams along with a pretty short paper.
Powell is an excellent lecturer, you won't be bored. Overall if you do the reading and come to class its pretty easy.
First things first: If you skip, you'll still pass. Attendance is not mandatory. We had 3 quizzes. You MUST read the book if you plan to pass. We only wrote one paper and had one book exam. Book exam was easy if you have a brief knowledge of history. Lectures are often only 1/4 about history and material; the rest is usually a tangent.
Learned about history and life! You have to read, and I recommend going to the lectures because the tests cover both lecture and book material. If you're looking to improve or help outside of the classroom, he is more than willing to help.
Prof. Powell seems like a really nice guy to get to know outside of the classroom, but his lectures leave a lot to be desired. He would get off-topic, to the point that half the class didn't attend class most days. He had quizzes that had content that we didn't discuss in class. His classes could be hard if you didn't have the historical background
As he says the first day "I don't know why we can't have some fun why we learn history". The people who complain just want to be told what's on the test and don't want to do any work. He does break-up lecture with tangents (sometimes personal) he always covers the material and is very knowledgeable. A few quizzes, short paper, mid/final.
He rants for most of the class, & you'll learn a lot about his personal life & his twitter fights. His final paper is really easy, & expect to read the books he assigns, because like 75% of the exams & quizzes are based off of it.
He talks a lot about himself, pretty funny though. His lectures the rest of the time drag on and I'm sure the class would have been better if people participated. He teaches straight from the textbook but sometimes shows videos or requires other books.
I took professor Powell as a freshman at OU. He does tend to lecture a lot, HOWEVER, pay attention to his lectures. They are key to passing the class. I'm a really good note taker, so it wasn't hard to pass the class. If anything, I enjoyed his lectures and funny stories. He truly cares for his students. The class was fairly easy and fun!
Professor Powell was one of the best teachers I've ever had. The class isn't hard if you come to class and do the work. He gave extra credit and was a really good lecturer. I really enjoyed how he used modern examples to help us understand history. I also liked how he broke-up long classes with funny and interesting personal stories.
Im sure Professor Powell is great in person. But I partially didnt like the way he ran the online class. He made stuff very unclear and I had to email him a lot to clarify assignments guidelines. There are 4 quizzes and they are timed for a short time so make sure to read. Overall not the worst class, but I wished he was clearer on assignments.
Okay low-key hated this class so much. If you learn by just listening to him talk and reading on your own then you will pass, but if you're like me and can't learn by learning everything on your own you won't pass. There is so much reading and you have to buy 3 books. He gets off topic so much its hard to focus. Don't take this class, just don't
A funny professor that truly tries to help people succeed. His lectures are informative and also full of humor, he truly is someone that will want to see you succeed and is a great choice for any history course or history majors.
The online course was very unclear. It was not easy for an online course so if you're looking for the easy route, this class isn't it. There were timed quizzes in my opinion were wayyy too short of time. It was one minute per question if I remember. Few discussion posts. NEED TO READ!!! IT IS A MUST!
Professor Powell lectures every class and majority of them he gets so off topic its hard to follow. Every quiz, which there was a total of 8, he gives a time limit of the exact number of questions there are, making it very hard to accomplish. I spent majority of my time reading and re-reading all the chapters to get an A in the class.
Professor Powells online course is a little bit of work but over all is good. Everything is laid out and the assignments are spread over time so you can do them when you want. Some helpful videos but you need to read the textbook. Overall a good class.
I put in absolutely no effort into this class and even skipped some assignments because of stress and I still got a C+. I did not watch a single lecture because they were SO BORING. I also didnt read anything. Most boring class I have ever taken.
Don't have much to say. Online (asynchronous). Discussion forums are not too hard and he is a fair grader. 4 online quizzes that u could do well on if u read the chapters carefully and utilize other resources. There is a final paper that I did not enjoy writing. Overall, it was easy. One of those classes where if u work hard u should get an A- /3.7
Way too difficult for a gen ed class. My upper division major classes which were relevant to my studies weren't half as difficult as this.
Prof. Powell is an excellent choice. His class is informative and I enjoyed the way he lectured. The class isn't that hard. Four multiple choice quizzes that are taken on Moodle a few discussion boards and a short paper. He is funny and isn't that tough of a grader.
Professor Powell's lectures are very entertaining. He is very intelligent and likes to keep the class engaged by telling jokes and stories throughout the hour so we don't lose focus. You have to read a lot, but it is a big help if you do because you can use notes on the quizzes. I would 100% take a class with Professor Powell again!
The textbook is easy to follow, as well as his lectures. Provides additional short videos for his online class. For discussion posts, make sure right off the bat that you are quoting from all sources and not just the textbook. My only complaint is quizzes. You can find the answer word for word in the textbook (open note), but it is still wrong.
Professor Powell is a great professor is very accessible. His class is lectures, 5 quizzes, discussions and one document paper. The class was easy and didn't take up a lot of time through the week. Discussions are easy just make sure you pay attention when they are posted.
Probably one of the best professors at OU. His teaching style is great and he makes jokes in the middle of lectures all the time, which makes the class more enjoyable. He's super helpful and truly wants everyone to pass his class. He's definitely a professor I'll never forget.
He's pretty cool. He makes dad jokes in class but eventually you will find them enjoyable. All of the quizzes he has given us are online and open-note. There is a lot of reading outside of class but, the textbook for his class is very easy to read.
Professor Powell's lectures can be hit or miss - he's engaging but gets off-topic sometimes. The readings are crucial, and using Unstuck ai along with the textbook really helped me prepare for the quizzes. Overall, a manageable course if you stay on top of the work.
There are few assignments like others said, it was pretty laid back and he gives multiple ways to learn the topics (lectures, YouTube, and book). Also organized, and direct on what he wants from students. My only complaint is that he's kind of a slow grader but he is a prof at Wayne too so I'm sure he's a busy guy. Just take notes, you'll be good
Professor Powell was genuinely THE BEST professor i've ever had. He is so engaging, very helpful, and has the best analogies to help you understand the criteria. If i could take him again I would a million times, I highly recommend!!
The assignments were all online, no tests just 5 unit quizes all multiple choice and timed. He is a really good person, funny in class lectures and he broke things down so they were easy to understand. I wish he taught more history classes I would be the first one in line to take those. The textbooks were really easy reads. TAKE HIM.
Don't get me wrong he's a funny guy but just not my type of teacher. If you want to learn do not take his class. There is very little assignments just a few discussion posts and then the 3 tests most of it comes from the text book and not the lectures. while he's teaching he goes off topic often and makes it hard to learn about the needed material
