Nice sense of humor, but quizes are pretty hard. Review all material before quizes. Gives extra credits, but if you don't do your part, it won't look good. A lot of reading.
Nice guy, funny. Lots of reading but not too much. Quizes and a few short papers. Fair with grades but you are expected to do the work. Quizes are hard if you don't take notes and do the reading.
Terrible sense of humor...makes it seem like it is so easy and then you do horrible, because he thinks he is an english prof and he doesn't know how to grade papers. he doesn't put comments on your paper, only a grade. not many people get A's in this
I learned sooo much in this class. Has a good sense of humor and gives extra credit. To do well in this class you HAVE TO do the reading. If you do, class is pretty easy.
He's a nice guy!!! Great sense of humor!!!! And also kind of cute in an intellectual sort of way!
Jeff is funny as heck, I was laughing constantly!! He is a nice guy but his quizzes are the hardest ive ever seen... He reallly needs to grade on a curve if hes gonna be that hard on quizzes and exams
He is a nice guy and pretty funny too. I noticed that once you get through the two quizzes by mid february there is little incentive to continue reading the text(majority of the work) I got an A but I worked hard only up until sprig break. Go hard at first then take it easy. Enjoy he's interesting.
Great class ! Might be the best history class/prof. I've had at Wayne State.
Great Professor! He was very easy on us--only two papers, one of which was extra credit and two essay exams. This class is a lot of reading, but you learn a lot. His lectures are very interesting and funny. Do the reading and you will do good on exams.
One of the best teachers I had through college. Very passionate about history and was very intelligent. I would take one of his classes again just for fun.
He was a great teacher. very interesting and very fresh.he is also very liberal. he made history interesting actually still remember the info. he taught in SU 05'. WOW!
I think hes a great prof. Great sense of humor and a fair grader. Some lectures were a little borring, but its history.... If you like history (which I don't) you'll love his class...
hes funny and knows what hes talkin bout, but at times hes just too rrogant. he makes it sound like hes an easy grader, but trust me "HE'S NOT"...unless ur a nerd and u get an A in everyclass class is intresting, and puts the info down well, but he wants to hear ur opinion and when u say it, he blows u off
Good professor, pretty funny. Takes history very serious though and his aim is that you learn how to think like a historian. If you're looking for a flyby class that fulfills a gen ed requirement, this is not the class for you. If you wanna learn a ton about European history though, go for it, you'll learn a ton.
He teaches a 2000 class like we're all at the 5000 level. I knew little about history (aside from teachings in high school years ago), and he did little to make the lectures comprehensive for everybody -just catered to history majors.
I'm not a history major and thought Powell was an amazing prof. This was the most interesting history class I have taken. He makes history relivant to today and makes you think. He is a fair grader you gives you the grade you earn. I would recomend him to anyone who needs to take a history course.
This was a great class ! Powell is a great professor. He is smart and funny. His sense of humor makes him kinda cutie. His lectures keep you engaged and you will learn a lot. He makes histroy relative to today. If you do the reading the class is easy.
Great Professor knows his stuff. His class is a lot of work and there is a lot of reading, but if you keep up with the work you can get an A. He gives the essay questions out before the test so all you have to do is study those. I don’t recommend taking his class in the shortened terms because it is just too much information in too little time.
Great Professor!! Like the others have said he does know his stuff. I would recommend coming to class though, b/c most of tests/papers are from class notes more than the book, other than the book tests of course. His jokes are pretty goofy but it kept me up. The spring/summer term will be be fast but just get to know him and you'll be fine.
GREAT TEACHER!! Funny and def knows his stuff. Anyone who says this class is too hard, get real! Pay attention, why else go to school if you don't want to learn?? His expectations are no less than they should be. I recommend this teacher to everyone, but if you're going to be lazy expect a grade that reflects it!
Powell was a great professor who knew a lot about the subject and will teach things you never knew about American history. If you just read the required text you will be fine he is a tough grader but very fair. READ THE BOOK!!!
AWESOME professor! The best history teacher I've had ever! He's going to make you work for your grade, but read the book and come to class and you'll do fine. Lectures are not boring like most other history classes, either. This guy definitely knows his stuff and makes the material interesting.
this professor is great, funny to listen to and you actually learn a great deal. the best teacher i've had at wsu yet. just make sure you read the novel type books (don't waste your time on the text book though). take him if you can.
Powell is a great teacher. makes learning history fun and easy. Hard grader but fair. You gotta read the text. All essay exams
This class was extra boring. I am not into history that much. I did not read any of the books that were assigned (looked online for all info), even though he tells you to, because the class was only 8 weeks and there was like 3 (35 pages p/ chapter) to read every week. Even though it was boring it was also easy 2 papers to write and 2 exams (essay)
Powell is funny, smart, and a great teacher. he is the best professor I've had at Wayne. Take him if you need a gen. ed. history.
I like this professor but I had to drop his class. I hate his exam style, all essays. Who in the world makes us do everything in essay form other than an English professor???? This is a history class. If you are weak at writing, then do not ever consider taking this professor.
Powell definitely breaks away from the clique of being a boring professor with no sense of humor. He has a down-to-earth personality and is a hardcore U of M fan. His lectures are very intriguing and he usually gets the whole class involved. Overall, very interesting class and great professor. Highly recommend for history gen ed.
amazing history professor. took his class during the winter semester, and even though it was a 4 hr class, i enjoyed every bit of it. sometimes he goes off topic, but for the most part it has something 2 do with the subject @ hand, n they are also quite didactic. not an easy grader, do EVERYTHING he tells u, read the txt bk, n u should be fine!
great history prof. sometimes he goes off topic, but they are still helpful and didactic. i took this class in the spring, and even thoug it was a 4hr class, i enjoyed every bit of it. pretty fair grader, even though it's a bit difficult to fully understand his grading scheme.do EVERYTHING he tells you and you should be fine.
He is a hard professor to rate. The guy is brilliant. I liked him but I do not think tests should be essay only for a 1000 level class. Excellent book choices. He seems irritated by todays students but spent a half hour talking to me after class about choosing a major which helped a lot. I squeaked out an A-. I mean squeaked. Thanks Dr. Powell
Professor Powell is one of the best at WSU. His lectures are great because he talks about more than just the textbook. The class is not hard. He gives review sheets for the exams and is a fair grader. I loved this class because he made history interesting and fun.
Cool class! I learned a bunch of stuff that my other history classes just passed over. I liked the class structure, and the lectures were very interesting. Professor Powell is a great teacher !
Awesome, great sense of humor. Semi-hard grader. You should be fine if you ask him about "ripping" the book instead of reading it. I think that's what he called it. And pay attention to the lectures, they are actually interesting, and this guy is hilarious.
This was my favorite class this semester. Powell is a wonderful teacher and the class is pretty easy. If you can, take this class it will change your feelings about the study of history, you'll love it !
I was very disappointed in Professor Powell's class. I was enthusiastic about this History class but found his teaching style extremely annoying. He spent more time talking about current events and his economic status than teaching. He was also condescending and disrespectful at times. It often felt like a waste of 3 hours.
Professor Powell is nice, smart, and he has a dry sacastic sense of humor that is hilarious. His lectures are full of inforamation and he relates it to today. He is one of the best histoy teachers at Wayne. Even if you don't like history you will learn and have fun doing it in his class.
What a great class. Professor Powell always kept me engaged and I learned more than I thought I would. The best thing about this class is how he helped us apply the past to the present. You will need to read the textbook, but if you do the class is easy. Highly recommend.
Prof. Powell is an excellent teacher, a very intelligent and easy going guy. It was simple to engage becuase he was always cracking jokes and relating past w/present events. 3 hr class was too long, but he was so understanding and bounced between lecture and fun topics. Very fair w/ grades. Encourages students to engage in discussions. Recommended!
Had him for two classes; Early American history and late western civ. He's so entertaining, interesting, and knows his information! The reading (of the novels at least) is necessary. His lectures make up for the textbook. His tests are all essay BUT he does it for a reason. He wants to give you as many points as possible! TAKE HIM!!!!
The Best ! I Loved this class. He wants you do well and loves to teach, that combo makes the class awesome.
Dr. Powell really knew his history. Must stay on track with the readings especially with the two extra novels bc he will test you on them. Attending lectures and taking notes is a must. He gives you the essay questions before exams so he has high expectations for the responses. I was worried about how difficult the class would be but I got an A-
Horrible professor. He was always so disorganized. Incorporated too much about his personal life in his lecture. Dude, we don't care. Took forever to grade exams and homework and the paper he assigned. I was not impressed and therefore I do not reccommend this professor.
I really enjoyed professor Powell's class. He is very entertaining and really knows his history. He kept the class energy up by telling interesting and funny stories that broke-up the 3 hour lecture. This was one of my favorite classes last semester. He gives gives out review sheets before the exams that are very helpful. I learned a lot.
Powell is an awesome professor. He make very clear examples and uses some modern topics to help you understand the past. His lectures are funny and he breaks up his lectures with tangents that make a three hour lecture bearable. You will learn and a lot and enjoy his class.
I liked his class. Like the others have said he will help you has much as he can. I thought the class was pretty easy. Just remember a few dates and be able to explain why things happened and you'll be fine. Tests were essay and short answers mostly with some multiple choice. Some thought there was a lot of reading but I didn't. Good lectures.
Makes you feel like a prick for attending Wayne State. That said, excellent professor with interesting lectures and a great sense of humor.
Solid class. Good lectures and very helpful. Gives reviews for the midterm and final. Had the class over spring. There was a lot of info, but he does a good job of narrowing down what topics will be on the exams. I recommend him as a prof.
I really enjoyed this class. I'm not much for history, but I learned a lot and it was fun. He is a really good lecturer.
Great class and a wonderful professor. Highly recommend his class. Gives reviews for the midterm and final which help a lot. If you go to class and read some you will be fine.
Professor Powell is one of the best professors I have encountered at Wayne State. It is worth it to take this course, you will learn so much and he is hilarious! Highly Recommend!
He tells the funniest corny jokes ever! It really Helps the time Go by fast! Yes his tests are hard. So I Encourage you, BEG you, to READ EVERYTHING! It's the only way you will pass this class! :) On a better note, he is understanding enough to work with you and answer all of your questions. I would recommend taking his class! :)
All you have to do is pay attention in lecture which is easy because he is hilarious! He gives reviews for the midterm and final and there is only 1 short paper. He is not a hard grader at all. Highly recommend !
Simply the best professor at WSU. He is wonderful, funny, helpful, and knowledgeable. If you need a history class take him, you'll love his class...
I miss this class because it was basically a fun pow wow that involved learning. It was funny and Powell never fails to keep jokes going. Just read the assignments and go to class and you're good
Professor Powell Rocks! He knows his stuff and is a very entertaining lecturer.
This was a great class and super easy. Jeff is hilarious and helpful. If you need a history class he is the man!
professor Powell is passionate and made class interesting and exciting. His instructions on everything were crystal clear and never hesitated to correct any confusion. He was also incredibly giving in helping improve your work; all the assignments are very do-able and he is a fair/easy grader. I found his class enjoyable. Would take again.
This was one of the best on line classes I have taken. Lots of entertaining and helpful videos and good audio lectures. Gave lots of time to complete the assignments. Professor Powell always responded to my questions and was very nice and helpful. I highly recommend this class.
I thought this was a very good class. He used several Collaborate sessions which were helpful and the course content of power points, videos, and audio lectures helped with the textbook readings. I was able to schedule the test to fit work. I found him to be very helpful when I had questions. I would take another online course with him.
I was extremely nervous about this class when it first started because of the amount of work that he expected out of all of us. It honestly wasn't that bad but it kind of is a lot of work especially if you take his 4 credit class in oppose to the 3 credit one. I didn't try my best but still got an A.
It's not hard but, how hard this guy grades is incredibly unfair. He won't tell you why you didn't get a 100% on essay exams that he expects to be done in 2 hours. Must be a full paper which requires research. Also gives an exam&essay on a fictional book in a non-fictional class. He's a English professor wanna be who's English skills are a child.
I enjoyed professor Powell's course. There is a fair amount of work, but it isn't that difficult. His comments on your work are minimal, but if you e-mail him he will expand his comments. A midterm, final (essay & multiple choice), a book review of a historical novel (standard stuff for a history class) and short paper. Fair grader.
Do not take if possible. He expects work of a 3XXX lvl course. Lots of reading exams are unfair because of the amount of work needed in the little time. Lots and I mean LOTS or reading. If your are taking more the 12 credits this class is not for you. STAY AWAY!!!
I found this to be a very interesting class and learned a lot. Professor Powell puts all kinds of material up on Blackboard for you to use a long with the textbook, PowerPoints, Videos, and audio lectures. He gives you the possible essay test questions a week in advance. He also uses live on-line sessions. Some work, but not hard at all.
This was probably the hardest class I've taken at Wayne State. He expects so much out of you. This is not taught like a level 1300 class, more like a 3000 level class. The stuff he puts on blackboard is not helpful at all, the test I didn't study for was my highest grade because I just ended up googling all the answers. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
A standard online class. I took the 4 credit option for this class which I believe had an extra book to read. The novels read in this class are pretty good! There is a lot of writing in this particular history course too, so if you struggle with writing essays then I wouldn't recommend. I personally like writing so the class was pretty easy.
Not hard at all. There a number of assignments but they are spaced out over the course. Gives review sheets so you can prepare for the midterm and final in advance . Overall a good class
This course was one of the most time consuming classes that I have taken here at Wayne State University. The class is a 1300 level course but it had the workload of a 3000 level and above class. He expects you to go above and beyond with assignments.
HIS1300 is a lot of work but Professor Powell is there to help you in any way he can. He is a very kind and caring Professor. He replies very quickly to emails to ensure you get your answers. I would definitely recommend professor Powell. Just be ready to read.
Don't do it.
Its a basic online class. 3 textbook quizzes, midterm and final, book exam and a short paper. The class isn't hard but you will need to read the books and view the stuff on Blackboard. Professor Powell is very helpful and I thought an easy grader. Overall I liked the class.
This class was VERY time consuming. Two novels were required reading IN ADDITION to the textbook. There was a lot of writing involved, and he was a very tough grader. This class felt like more of an English class than History. I DO NOT recommend.
This class requires some work, but it isn't hard. The materials on Blackboard help and if you do the readings you get everything you need to do well. He gives reviews for the midterm and final. Also, the Collaborate sessions were helpful. I recommend taking the class, as long as you're not looking for a blow-off class.
I did not read any books for this class. I read the sparknote summaries for the two novels we had to read. I have spent little to no time studying for this class. He does grade the essay portions of the exams kind of tough. This isn't the worst class to take for elective credits, but I'm sure there are better out there.
Dr. Powell was a professor with clear grading criteria and was eager to help students succeed. He ensured that we knew what material was going to be on the tests and he managed online sessions to answer questions. The tests were rather difficult as there were many date specific items and we had to read two books, but if you do the work you'll be ok
This class is not bad; however, it is pretty difficult for an online elective. He really thought that no one was gonna use notes during his short answer and essay midterm. He expected us to pull a full out essay.. intro, thesis sentence, body paragraphs,&conclusion, without using any notes? lol... But anyways, this class is fine if you do the work.
This guy assigns a crap-ton of work, and takes over a month the return it to you. Why should I do test five when you still haven't returned test two to me? His instructions are vague, and the books he's chosen for the course are boring/poorly written.
The class is not that bad. At first it seems like a lot of work, but considering you dont have to attend class its not that much. Good resources on line (videos, PowerPoints). He is a fair grader. 4 quizzes, 2 discussions, written midterm & final and a paper. Got 90+ on all but two of the quizzes.
The class isn't hard at all. The only people who think so just want a blow off class. Professor Powell is a pretty easy grader and if you try at all you'll do fine.
It's a very easy class. But, with him, there's a ton of work. He gives enough work that you'd basically not notice any difference between an online class and an in-person class, and he even admits to this on the first video he posts on Canvas. Quizzes are very easy and for writing assignments, he's lenient so it's not that bad. Just lots of work.
His class has a lot of workload for no reason save yourself the time and stress and find another teacher
This class was informative and enjoyable. lots of interesting video clips and helpful online materials. If you read the textbook and view the stuff on line you'll be fine. Make sure you stay on top of due dates and don't wait until the last minute to do the assignments. A few multiple choice quizzes, a paper, and discussion boards which are easy.
There is not a lot of work for this class and he gives plenty of time to get it done. 2 discussion posts. 4 quizzes. 1 paper that's 5-6 pages. 1 book report. 1 book discussion. He's a difficult grader. You lose points for not using quotes for discussions, or if you don't cite your quotes. Easy prof.
He is such a tough grader. He only allows 1 minute per question on the quizzes and exams and does not allow you to go back on questions. 4 discussion posts per week is required.
Unwilling to work with his students, the class was online and he was very slow in answering my questions over email. Tough grade that will only go by the book and absolutely nothing else. If you miss one of his requirements he will give you an automatic 0 from any assignment, quiz or exam. One of those professors that don't care if you pass or fail
Not sure what class some students are referring to but Professor Powell's class isn't that difficult. And no, there are not 4 discussion boards due per week (that would be like 60 boards). there is 1 paper, 2 discussion boards, 4 multiple choice quizzes, a book exam. It is a typical online class.
The class isnt hard at all. The only thing that is required is some reading and watching some online videos. The multiple choice test are easy and so are the discussions. The book quiz was probably the hardest test. Overall. The final was multiple choice and open book. Overall an easy class.
Although Professor Powell responds to emails quickly and is accessible to students, he does not offer any extra credit and is a tough grader.
I had this class in the summer of '22. It was a solid class. The online modules and the lectures were helpful. There were a few multiple choice, matching quizzes, discussion boards & 6 pg essay from a course pack. Extra credit that allowed us to replace our lowest grade. The only criticism was that he won't accept late assignments. A good prof.
The class itself isn't too difficult but his grading system is a bit confusing. I missed one discussion assignment but got 85s and 90s in all my other work but my final grade was a 77. He does not curve the grades so make sure to not miss any assignments because it impacts your final grade a lot.
My God you could have told me I was in a graduate level class and I would've believed you. Its a 1000 level history GEN ED class, but this guy grades like his life depends on it. His instructions are one sentence long but then he will dock you points for the most petty details. Do not stress yourself over a gen ed, just it take w/ someone else
Not a bad class. A little bit of work, 4 multiple choice quizzes, 2 discussion board (kind of long) and a 5 page paper on some documents. Overall, the class is set up well and the online modules are easy to follow. If you do the work he is a pretty easy grader. He won't take late work unless it documented.
The class itself is not difficult, there was curvature to my final grade I was unaware but pleased about. There were multiple choice quizzes, a discussion, and a six page paper. Just reference the textbook and watch the one hour weekly lectures, it doesn't get easier than this. Professor is clear and lectures are interesting.
SO unclear on assignments, doesn't give any extensions or believe you if something happens to where you can't get assignment turned in. Assignments are insanely difficult and is so unclear with how he wants stuff graded. Doesn't give ANY good direction and is almost impossible to pass. NO extra credit to make up for lost points. never taking again.
Professor Powell's HIS2050 class is set up well, with easy-to-follow online modules. While grading can be tough, engaging with the system pays off. Unstuck ai proved a helpful study tool alongside the textbook.
