awesome....fun class!
Great teacher! Loves his job and is willing to help anyone who asks! Very understandable person. Very knowledgable!
Not boring, great teacher. Willing to help and great to bounce ideas off of.
My favorite prof. and class at Marshall. Knows his stuff and is very interesting in lecture. Take this class!
Man, he know's religions. He's nice, funny, and his wife came in to play the sitar, it was a blast.
he is an awesome teacher. if you need a rst requirement then take it with this man, grades extremely easy, an easy A. loves to talk about when he lived in india, and how monkeys stole his groceries, lol. his wife is a big hippy and plays the sitar for you

I needed an Art/Humanities elective and an international elective to graduate. This class met both requirements but I dreaded taking it. It turned out to be one of the best classes I had at MU.
This class is really hard, but he is a nice person and makes it fun. The final and midterm are hard, but they are take home.
Although the material is not easy, he makes the class enjoyable, and is extremely understanding and helpful to all students. Great professor.
Difficult material with lots of reading but an awsome teacher. Really helpful and understanding. Extremely knowledgable about the subject and tells great stories. Likes students to ask questions and will take time outside of class to help you.
Excellent teacher. Will talk with students outside of class (rare at MU). Great stories about his sabbatical in India.
Excellent teacher, very easy class. One of the best classes I've had at marshall, very insightful. Ruff makes class enjoyable and is willing to help students. Down to earth person who is nice to talk to out of class.
Probably the best professor at Marshall. Any class of his is a great learning experience.
Warning!! This man may have beeen noted for being easy for this class, but I am currently rst206 and believe me he greats extremely hard. Half the class is falling and I currenyl have a D-. And i'm an honors student with a 3.2 G.P.A. with only 2 Cs ever.
Awesome professor! Knows his stuff and has really broadened my horizons. I've also had a crush on him all semester! If he makes an Egyptian religion class I'll be the first to sign up. =)
You will learn something from this guy. A refreshing experience from the "typical" classes. Very engertic about the material and friendly. If you pay to go to college to actually learn, I recommend him. Tests are hard to get back, though.
. During this time I was kind of living as a vagabond in a basement never sleeping, occasionally would doze off in class. However, I still managed a B , yes he grades hard but is very reasonable. Grades accordingly, knows his subject. Not a class forsmucks
By far the most interesting class i have. If you take the time to read the material and ask questions, the class time will fly by. HE LOVES TO TALK, SO TALK BACK!!! This man is incredibily intelligent, and you WILL benefit and learn from this class.
He was unclear in his lectures and gave few grades which made it difficult to do well in the class unless each grade was near perfection.
I think Mr. Ruff is the best teacher at Marshall! Not only is he extremely intelligent, but he makes learning interesting! He is such a nice man and I am excited about getting to take his rst351 class next semester (2005. He's not as easy as you might think, but he's cool and it's fun!!
Jeff Ruff is wonderfully cultured and well spoken, gets along well with students and is a vivid speaker when talking about cultural issues, in particular hinduism. His teaching is sharp and intuitive and i recommend him to anyone who wants to learn the right way. Enjoy this class and ask him questio
AWESOME professor! He's so intelligent I sometimes have to wonder how he retains all that information. I still have a crush on him, too. =) *giggles* Take his classes and be prepared to enjoy learning!
Extremely interesting. Tests cam be difficult IF you choose not to listen or to miss class. The last day of class my entire class stayed over 20 minutes with a discussion. How many professors would you do that with?
Jeff Ruff is an extremely intelligent and entertaining professor. If you want to take one of Jeff's classes, be prepared to keep your own religious beliefs out of your work. The goal is to understand what other cultures believe. You don't have to agree, but keeping an open mind helps.
one of the best classes i've had at marshall. excellent professor, though the concepts are not easy to understand to everyone. rel lit was a awesome class, highly recommended.
i've taken him every semester that i've been here at marshall. allows the student to think for themselves and doesn't supply all the answers, and due to the nature of his classes, that's the way it should be. Really loved his Buddhism, Hindu Mysticism, and Rel. Lit. classes just for the topics, but him teaching it made it that much better.
Although the material was interesting I found him to be rather frustrating. He often appeared condescending in his replies to students and took 3 weeks to return essays in a 5 week summer class. The limited amount of feedback left me very upset at his lack of responsiveness to students and their work.
Class material was interesting, but he was frusterating and arrogant.Took ridiculously long to get assignments back making it immpossible to improve on following assignments.Very disappointed with overall experience.
He was an okay teacher, except for the fact it took him so long to grade paper's. I think he wasn't as strict as he seems about how he grades papers. It's also nice how you can talk on discussion and get more points.
He offers discussions and its easy.. just post ur opinions and stuff.. 3 papers.. the final was a paper.. its easy hes a nice guy with a lot of experience.
Horrible professor!!Arrogant & condescending. Took forever to get papers graded. Not thorough in expectations or explanations. I recommond taking someone else.
AWESOME. Class discussions are always interesting. Its a relaxed setting and he brings himself down to the students level. Condescending? Not at all. Take him! He's also nice to look at during class, if ya know what I mean ladies *wink wink*
Horrible professor!!Condescending and pompous!!Also takes too long to return papers.Do not take this professor!!
Dr. Ruff is one of the best proffesors I've taken. Not too strict on attendance policy but I always end up going to class because he's that good.
He's good as a person but he expects too much. He goes too in depth for a lower level class. He wanted us to know when Buddha lived and when the baghavad Gita was written. I'm a christian and I don't even know the exact date when the bible was written, so how is knowing such intricate details supposed to enrich my life or knowledge?
jeff teaches from the heart. if you expect to go in, take notes, and regurgitate it back out on a test, then take someone else. my life has been forever altered by this man. please take him.
Too tough for a lower level class. He tries to make you internalize that material rather than be objective. Somewhat difficult if youre not a liberal arts major.
I really enjoyed Ruff's laid back lectures. He is really passionate about what he is teaching and know what he is talking about. He is helpful in academic situations and overall a great guy.
This is the 5th class I've had with Dr. Ruff. His wide area of knowledge and experience add depth and variety to his classes. He is a passionate lecturer and caring teacher. He is slow to grade papers because he truly wants to help his students. I would obviously recommend him. And he's cute.
I am hopelessly in love with Ruff. He is incredibly intelligent and makes you dig deeper into the meanings of society. I think he is by far the greatest professor at Marshall and I feel sorry for those who will not get the chance to take one of his classes. I would pay to take it even w/o the credit hours...it's that educational.
the best class i've ever had. the smartest professor i've ever had. you can't lose if you take him
Beautiful man, inside and out. He has a passion for what he teaches and it radiates throughout the classroom. I could never understand how someone could take his class and not be inspired. He has a way of teaching and understanding that makes you want to pick apart his brain, before realizing he's already laid it out there for you. Best class ever.
I don't see how a student could ask for a better professor. Ruff is a credit to Marshall, and I would advise not passing up any chance to take one of his classes.
This class is really out there a lot of times, but at least he makes it easy although often quite boring.
no tests, 4 papers, very easy going
One of the best Professors at Marshall! If you want an interesting class...be prepared to join in class discussions. He will make you think...a delightful man! The class is as much fun as the students who take it...so make it fun!
VERY VERY GOOD!!!
If you want to be even a little bit of a better person, take this class. It's the most important I've ever taken.
One of the best
Very good teacher who knows his stuff. Willing to help students. He will make you think.
Jeff is amazing.you will learn a lot in his class.read the books and you wont have to write/have many quizzes or papers.learn to talk ALOT in his class. always ask questions.do the work and you'll make a good grade. you'll learn alot about the subject plus more.i've taken him for 3 classes and loved all of them!BEST PROF ON CAMPUS(&i'm a bio major)
Dr. Ruff's class was really interesting and his lectures were really fun, but his test are HARD and he grades them really hard as well.
very original. creative. deep insight about subject matter. also, just darn fun
really thoughtful and creative, will help you if you need it.
He goes out of his way to help his students. He wants you to understand the material and will try different approaches to help you. His creative projects are fun dont over think the project. He makes you think and question. I learned more by taking his class than in any other class. He is a great teacher!!! Make sure you take notes and read:)
Do not take. He was unreliable and uninterested in this online class. He rarely signed on after the first month. Assignments were not graded for months, if at all. Tests were extremely hard. I did well but I totally taught myself.
I had such trouble with his online class it was astonishing. He seems completely uninterested in it. Not a lot of work is assigned, the assignments are usually simple but the tests are killer. His essay questions are hard to understand and he doesn't let you know what he wants from you as far as depth and length. All grades are last minute.
He's a really great guy with lots of interesting stuff to say. Tests are super hard, but the classes I've had with him are some of the best classes I've taken. I absolutely recommend him, as long as you don't mind to spend time studying for the exams and reading the material.
I loved this class so much. At first I was confused as to what to take notes on but then I realized all I had to do was pay attention in class and read the chapters he said to read and the tests were easy. Fun and interesting class, I definitely recommend.
I've taken this professor three times and enjoyed every single class I've had with him. He's not the greatest when it comes to online and emails, he'll even admit this, but take in person classes for a learning experience and if you have any questions: show up at his office hours, he'll be glad to assist you. Only downside is his tests are tough.
Prof Ruff is extremely smart but his lectures arent always clear cut. He likes to tel stories that somehow teach Buddhist lessons but doesn't tell us what the lesson is. He does a good job of teaching the original Buddhas story but after that he just tells stories but expects you to know things for the tests.
Love this man. Makes you think about your life. I really enjoyed his class and his stories. Prepared to be amazed with him. All good thoughts and words. Enjoy.
If you've paid attention and read the chapters you will be fine. Also be sure to fill out any study guides he provides because the information will be on the test. Lectures are long and no cell phones are allowed, but the lectures are very interesting so you won't notice!
Rambles on and on and answers to questions do not make any sense. If you ask him a question you wont get an answer in the first 5 minutes or at all. Expects to to understand the philosophy in everything especially when writing papers. Would not recommend.
Beware! This is a reading intensive course! If you take this class you will not have time for any other class due to the massive amount of useless readings. Took 4 weeks to receive a schedule of assignments, quizzes and exams. Rambles on in class and information is very unclear and sometimes not pertaining to material you need to know.
I took the intercession course so everything was crammed into 4 weeks. There was two quizzes a week but no actual "final" and the answers on the quizzes were found in the textbook. Definitely try your best on discussion posts bc he sometimes takes off points and doesn't tell you why.
This course he co-teaches with Dr. Chrol and they are a fun duo. Dr. Ruff is an expert in more than just religion: anthropology, sociology, philosophy, politics, etc. He doesn't chime in as much as Dr. Chrol, which is a shame but he absolutely knows so much and will make you question just about everything.
Excellent teacher
Dr. Ruff is one of the most influential teachers I've ever had. His classes are informational and he never judges students and is always supportive. Gets off track sometimes, but it's always interesting no matter what subject. He has been a supportive mentor and I adore every class I've had with him.
Definitely think everyone should experience Jeff. He has taught me more about life and myself than anyone ever has or ever will. If you arent ready to be open minded and easy going, dont bother, hes not for you. Jeff is easily one of the most intelligent, compassionate and honest person I have ever met. His Buddhism & Hinduism classes are great
Very knowledgeable and gifted scholar (he's basically the Mikhail Bakhtin of our generation). Very highly recommended
Dr. Ruff is an amazing person. I've taken his Hinduism and Buddhism courses and loved them both. He is inspirational and caring. His lectures can sometimes lead him to unrelated discussions, but if you pay close attention, it's all actually connected. Take notes, do your readings, and ask questions if you have them. Study and you will be fine.
JEFFREY IS A SCHOLAR. A REAL SCHOLAR.
He is an amazing professor, and incredibly easy grader with lots of feedback! Participation does matter (at least in the online section of the class) as you have to respond to numerous discussion boards. But great course, the material was very inspiring! Awesome professor! :) I would recommend taking! :)
Great class! It works well online and Ruff is well organized. The class is moderately difficult so if you want an easy A it may not be for you. Read the book; it will be worth it. However, I got by without reading it. I can say I learned a lot from this course and it was worth the effort I put in.
Dr. Ruff is an amazing professor in this Buddhism class! He is an easy grader, and has an extra credit assignment, but be aware that you must participate in the discussion boards to pass the class! The textbook is optional to buy, as he offers an online version. This was an amazing class, and he was an amazing professor! :)
I had Dr. Ruff for Humanities and Film co-taught with Dr. Chrol. Both of them are excellent at getting an engaging in-class discussion. The course material does become a bit repetitive if topics like ancient Rome and Greece & warfare don't interest you. Only the first few discussion boards were required, but every week a worksheet on a film is due.
If you hate slow graders, DO NOT take him. The semester is almost over; he has grades 2 out of 7 discussions. This class is entirely based on discussion posts and 2 high stakes assignments. He also has weird due dates. Sometimes, a discussion post is due on Tuesday at 2:00am or Friday at 11:59, or Sunday at 11:59. Very interesting class, though.
