good and funny prof, fair exams, don't take his class if you're easily offended!
What a wonderful way to teach a class! Super interesting and creative.

He is so hunky. He's an awesome teacher. His class is so much fun!
He was interesting to listen to, and always a lot of fun. I'd love to take another class from him.
hot hot hot and smart smart smart :) also young ;)
Tons of fun!!
SO MUCH FUN! I LOVED this class, and the prof. I must say I think I have a bit of a crush! He is enthusiastic and makes you enjoy studying psych with him... he is the reason I switched into Psych!
All I can say is.... wow!
Jeff always tries innovative things in is lectures to make them interesting, and usually stops and talks about anything that comes up. If you're not that into Psych, this guy is a great prof to learn from.
Very fun. Jeff brings alot of energy and excitement to class. He teaches with a style that is rarely seen in a University setting. I was very impressed.
Great prof! Can relate to students. Young and hot! Fair exams.
Fun class to be in! ^-^

This was a great class that completely changed my outlook on the subject. It's hard, but if you work and actually do your readings you'll do fine. And YUM! The view ain't bad either ;)
Jeff is one of the most amazing profs I've ever had. He makes such complex things seem to simple, interesting, and hilarious. He never fails to crack me up whether it's in class or just when I'm asking him a question. Two thumbs way up!!! :-)
a decent prof, but don't like him as a person. way too care-free in his interactions and conversation with students outside of his class.
That was a extremely hard course, so many readings! But Jeff is always my favourite Psychology prof, even though he is kinda hard to reach outside of class sometimes! But he is very funny in class, and I think he is the best looking prof I have even seen!

One of my favorite professors at the U of A, and it's not just because of his good looks: He makes an effort to present interesting lectures and has a great sense of humor. Some say that his exams are difficult, but if you study in detail they're a piece of cake.
Videos added to course material
Jeff is completely adorable, but more constructively he is enthusiastic, intelligent, and entertaining. No one can make a room full of Psych Honours women giggle like Jeff can. The course was also extremely interesting - if you like Social Psychology definatly go for it. Best prof ever!!!
Jeff really knows his subject and he is skilled at conveying his knowledge to the class in an effective, interesting manner. The course itself is fascinating, with well-chosen readings and films. Yes, Jeff is cute, but more importantly, he is a compassionate prof who knows how to teach.
Wow, this guy is one of the best profs I've had in my entire 4 years at this school. Very enthusiastic, helpful and FUN. He can make even the most boring of theories interesting. And I have a little bit of a crush on him, he is so dorky and adorable!

Awesome prof. I thought he effectively used video clips/movies in his lectures. He incorporates his own research into the class, which is a plus. Great sense of humour and fair tests. If you attend lecture and read the text you'll do fine. Highly recommended!
I had him for 105 and loved it so I took him for 241. He is very interesting and class is fun, but I found his exams really hard, even if you studied lots and did all readings.
He's a good prof but SUCH an ASS!! He's very full of himself and spent as much time making stupid jokes (which weren't funny unless you thought he was good looking) as he did teaching. He's interesting and his classes are fun if you can get over the fact that HE can't get over himself.
The prof is good looking, but that's about it. His classes were so-so. Some of the questions on the exam are quite obscure.
I took his classes because I don't think anyone in psychology is capable of teaching. At least Jeff knows what he is talking about and knows his materials. The only downside is that half of pubescent girls in classes thought he is good- looking and giggled all the time at his silly jokes.
He knew his stuff, and incorporated more to-date material and examples into his lectures. However, he is pompous, whispers in front of the class during the exams with his TA, and isn't very helpful outside of class. If you can get over his cockiness, you'll be fine, otherwise, forget it, it'll make you angry.
pompous and not very approachable.
Jeff teaches some really interesting stuff, he is also a nice guy.

good class
He needs to repeat his explanations several times, because he is not very clear. He doesn't really test you on concepts, but on insignificant details of experiments related to the concepts.
SUCH an amazing prof! Easily understandable (uses Seinfeld clips for examples of concepts) and very very willing to explain examples in a relevant way to students. His lecture is T/Th and there are almost 250 ppl, and its always full! Take his class! His exams are fair (read the book and you're set) and the class is super entertaining!!
Finally a teacher who doesnt just repeat whats said in the text, he adds research studies to back up the theories, shows alot of ideo clips, apparently like seinfield... you'll remmeber the stuff!
Kick-ass prof!! Love his class, hilarious guy.
Overall, a pretty decent professor. Knows how to make the class enjoyable, but sometimes sacrifies substance for style. Tests are awkward. Very personable.
BEST prof ever! Makes the class and material incredibly interesting and uses Seinfeld material and current events (aka the whole Kramer incident) to make his point. Super easy going and clear. Read the book, grasp the concepts, and you're set!
Jeff actually talks about relevant issues, he is not a rat-ologist like many psychologists. Who cares about birds and rats??? Not I!
he was a good prof but in my opinion his tests where slightly hard..make sure you study both his lecture notes and the textbook, because there are always lots of questions from the assigned readings that people ignore.
I don't know why so many people like him. Very boring, we spent the time watching useless movies, we went through way less stuff with him in 105 than with someone else in 104, because we didn't watch pointless movies all the time. Managed to turn his area (social psychology) into one of the topics that he was least informed about!
settle down, girls! yeah, he's kinda cute in a nerdy way but overall i was not that impressed with the class. he was kinda disorganized and spacey (sp?). zero exam prep except for the final - good review sheet. exams asked totally arbitrary questions from the text so you had better read it!
The class was notbad, it depends how interested you are in psychology. His notes were good and we filled in stuff during the lectures so attending the lectures is a good idea unless u have someone to borrow the notes from. Reaading the text book is must. Understand the main concepts, and you should do fine. The exams are fair, no surprises.
i thought he was an excellent teacher. he kept you interested and awake throughout the whole class and made a real effort for everyone to enjoy the class as well as succeed.
I JUST wrote my GRE psych subject test, and THIS guy made that test a BREEZE. After nearly 2 yrs since his class, I STILL remember the material since he was so funny and down to earth! If you get a chance TAKE this class. If you write the GRE you'll be laughing!!!!
oh he is soooo cute. this class was awesome.
Excellent prof. GPA booster if you need it.
Pretty decent, though I dislike his lecture style. Head to his classes, he often will throw a few questions on exams specifically from the lectures and that can be the difference between an A or B. Literally, one or two marks in his class is all that separates most people. I don't really like psychology, but if you do, take it from him.
Super Cute!! Made his class interesting and worth going to. Great to look at! Added extra insight into theories.
Dr. Schimel is knowledgeable, young (and therefore fun...and cute!)and he is incredibly helpful and approachable. He's also the only Terror Management Theory researcher in Canada!

Great prof! Knows what he's talking about and is really down to earth. He's a bit of a dork but that adds to his charm. Exams were a little on the tough side, but this class was an elective for me so that might have something to do with it. Highly recommended!
Fun prof. Good material and keeps the interest level up with lively video clips (most of which are actually hilarious). Overall easy class. Make sure to attend lectures for extra information.
What an amazing Prof. Took 241 with him and absolutely LOVED IT. He doesn't just throw up power point slides like every other prof and ramble on, he's really knowledgeable and a great teacher! I highly recommend taking this class.
So does anyone know whether he is single? I am asking for a friend...
Great prof! (and, in answer to the previous post, I've heard that he has a girlfriend)
one of the best profs ive ever had. class average is fairly high but if you read the textbook and attend lectures you will be fine. he tells you what to study for each exam. fun class and i looked forward to it every tuesday and thursday. highly recommended
One of my favorite profs in 3 yrs of Uni... and not just because he's a cutie! I learned so much in his class and took so much away from it. His lectures were very enlightening. His notes are very short and concise, but knowing the textbook is mandatory to do well on his exams, which are otherwise quite easy. You will be so glad you took his class!
He is such an awesome prof. He's always showing video clips and giving really interesting examples that help make the material really easy to remember. You MUST read the textbook since at least half the questions on the exam are from there. Exams are super easy as long as you've read the text well and gone to class to fill in the notes.
Wow. This man is so gorgeous, I didn't think it was possible to feel my heart beat as loud as it did every Tuesday and Thursday from 2-3:20pm. He's the only reason I came to class.
One of the best profs at the U of A. Would recommend to take one of his classes. Great at making the material and discussions interesting. Also very helpful outside of class.
Great, engaging prof but be warned you will have to know the material very well to do well on the exams. Fun lecturer, uses a lot of video clips and real-world examples. Some of his social psych. stuff can be defined pretty murky. Also be warned that the textbooks usually are so-so in quality.
dont think a 100 level final worth 2 days studying, too much stuffs on the final are from the lectures instead of the textbook and, i dont understand why the class is not providing any ppt.
Good prof, funny. Uses lots of videos and things to keep the class interesting.
He can be extremely boring or absolutely hilarious, often during the same class. That said, he's a great prof who I'd recommend to anyone wanting to get something out of a psych course.
A bit boring at times, but can also be really funny/charming. Class varies from really boring to really interesting, but all in all not too bad.
Great prof. Exams are MC and easy if you read the text and go to class. You must read the textbook because he doesn't go over everything in class and attend clas. He uses examples from class on his exams. Put in a little effort and it goes a long way. His can actually be really funny at times and shows videos in class so it's somewhat entertaining
Had my doubts at first, he seemed a tad unorganized and all over the place, but at the end he was pretty good. Funny at times. Exams we're quite simple and straightforward if you read the notes, attended class and read the textbook. Taking another psych course with him next year !!
Schimel is funny, which smooths over some of the more boring topics. Class is interesting and informative; his anecdotes and videos mix it up just enough. His exams are straight-forward and evenly weighted on text and class notes; if you put in a little effort there's a big payout. My first A+ so I'm a little biased but fantastic prof overall.
He was good, explained the material in a way tat u would understand it until the exam so didn't really need to write it down, just listen to him. I didn't miss a single class and took notes and didn't chit chat during class and got an A. Dont know if the class is curved or not... Read the textbook. He was fun too
Very knowledgeable prof. Attendance is mandatory as notes he hands out are just the outline. He goes over everything rather quickly. I found his exams to be difficult but found the class was very interesting, so i didn't mind. I would definitely recommend him. Be sure to pay attention in class and to read the text!
Class was interesting but not mandatory. Alot of exam material came from textbook. Interesting professor that is easy to pay attention to.
Great prof, makes the class engaging and interesting. The material itself was great, if you have the chance to take this class I would strongly suggest it
By far, the most interesting class I've taken at the U of A and had a strong focus on existentialism. Lots of readings and class discussion to go along with the films. Tests were quite challenging.
It's crucial to attend class.I missed one class and there were 5 questions on the exam from that one lecture. Classes move incredibly fast so you really have to keep up. Exams are a bit tough. You must read the text since 50% of questions on the exam are from there. The prof wasn't bad he had some funny moments but I found the lectures dry.
This class was simply stupid. Most of the exams were based on the textbook. He talked too fast in lectures, which were quite boring. And his exams weren't too hard, just pretty vague. I personally think he needs to put more effort into the course. Pretty disappointed :(
This was an excellent class, the exams aren't difficult. Read the textbook or attend lectures, one or the other is probably enough but if you do both you're guaranteed to do really well. He speaks clearly as well and his notes are organized.
I was a little disappointed with this class as well.. He tried his best to keep the class engaging, but his tests were rather vague and contained some irrelevant info, like stats.. For the most part, I hated having to read the text and know every single thing. The material is somewhat interesting. The pace was quite fast, which I appreciate.
I came into class with high expectations, but it was kind of a let down. I found that Dr. Schimel tried to make the class funny and relevant, but the examples he provided were quite dated and biased towards the US. Reading the textbook once was sufficient for the exams, which weren't hard at all (high class average!).
Great lecturer. Loves to answer questions and won't lie when he doesn't know the answer, but will work hard to help you understand. I found exams hard to get used to, some questions were ridiculously specific, and some very vague concept critical thinking questions. I liked the examples that he gave and he's easy to listen to.
Not too boring lectures, he talks at a reasonable speed, and the outlines he provides are very helpful. Reading the TEXTBOOK is a MUST. Sometimes he takes random details from the textbooks (like 3 questions/test), but 95% of the time his tests are easy and fair. There isn't much material, which is nice. Also, he seems friendly
Had many ambiguous questions on his midterms which he himself could barely clarify. He relied on the curve to keep everyone in balance. Lectures were engaging and interesting but I was unsatisfied with his testing and grading. He never even mentioned let alone discussed the results of the first midterm which frustrated me.
He was such a great teacher! I loved how he did lectures - he had fill-in-the-blank notes which were very helpful and he explained things very well. He was very enthusiastic and had 3 exams all MC. Honestly my favourite professor I have had and I'm at the end of third year!
To those Science students out there: this is NOT a GPA booster. It's a curved class full of art students and average (B) is low 80s. If your in it- um good luck memorizing 123484 terms, and read the TEXTBOOK!!
I did not like this class at all. Lectures were not very clear and tough to follow his lecture style. Attend every class and write very detailed notes, but more importantly READ THE TEXTBOOK!!! He loves to test on terms and all the studies he talks about in class and that are in the book. They're all fair game!
One of the best professors I have ever had. Clear, intelligent, helpful, covers the majority of the concepts in class, which is excellent as you can go home with a basic understanding and further your knowledge through reading the book. Tactful - takes into account every comment and uses it to further the information provided in class! Loved 241.
Schimel can be funny at times... but I would not recommend this class. You have to do a lot of readings and the midterms ask very detailed questions. You're expected to know almost all the studies ever mentioned in lecture and in the textbook. The course content was also very boring. Don't do it.....
His tests are tough. Average grade is 60-70%, and the class is curved. He covers a huge amount of studies in lectures, and tests on the majority of them, so missing class will easily cost you 8-12 marks on every exam. The text book was super helpful, but again didn't cover most of the studies which he expects you to know.
Really really loved this course and Dr. Schimel. I don't get people who say it was a hard class, literally all you have to do is show up to class and take notes, and do the assigned readings. It's not unreasonable. I thought he was quite funny and brought in a lot of extra little movie clips and stuff to make things memorable. And so damn cute.
He's an awesome guy! Not the best prof but not the worst either. His lectures are interesting but tests were difficult. Fill in the blank notes -- so needed to go to every class
he provides plenty of video evidence of what he is talking about and makes his topics come to life. classes are not mandatory but with the videos it definitely helps!
I preferred reading the textbook over going to Schimel's class. I felt his notes were easily covered by the textbook, and his examples such as videos were completely inaccessible unless you were into sports. His class on racism and prejudice was an embarrassing nightmare. Easy A, but here's hoping you can put up with him...
He is a very funny guy! He made the long night class go by very quickly! He uses many examples to elaborate on the notes. The textbook was very helpful and should be read as his notes are not the best. He was definitely interesting and not bad to look at (it helps).
Prof Schimel is an interesting lecturer. Be ready to take diligent notes though since he doesn't post any lecture notes besides a basic outline. Textbook readings are also required for the exams but otherwise, his exams are fair.
2 noncumulative midterms and cumulative final. They're hard because he has these scenario based questions, which means you can't just memorize things to do well. You have to know your stuff. Go to class because he only posts outlines on eclass. Read the textbook for clarification. And pay attention to his examples. Shows clips sometimes.
Awesome prof who made a night class enjoyable. Attendance is important since his notes he posts are a basic outline that he expands on. The videos shown in class are very helpful and I found his tests to be fair. If you take the time to learn the material you'll have no problems.
I really enjoyed him as a prof! Really knew his stuff, incorporated videos and real-life recording of experiments into his lectures which made information easy to learn. Tests weren't bad as long as you study and understand the studies he talks about in class. Two midterms and a final so tests are big for this class.
Not a bad class! Lectures are kinda dull since he literally just goes over examples of studies in class; most of the "meat" in the course comes from the textbook I found. I HATED the curve though. It likely will not help you - the averages are typically pretty good (I think the final average for our class was about 78).
A really great, smart, engaging person. The material is super interesting and easy to understand, but the midterms and finals are super hard and the textbook is absolutely required. Some how, I have no idea how, the average of the class was super high, so the bell curve was so stupid... my grade was in the mid 80s and i got a B-.
Jeff was a great lecturer - he really respects his students. However, I cannot stress how many of his test questions are either ambiguous or so esoteric you can't even tell what they're testing - even the TA had no clue for a few of them. Despite that and an insane amount of textbook reading, curve is cut-throat which is magnified in a small class
Schimel is up and down and it seems hes preoccupied often. The class is sometimes ok but often embarrassingly lame. He needs to try harder. Seems he doesnt care
I can't really put a face to the name because I took Psycho 445 (Social Psychology in Cinema ) online and he hardly made an appearance the entire semester. My main issue was that Jeff didn't make this online semester personal in any way. He was inaccessible, I sent many emails - no reply. He didn't show up on camera and even skipped many videos.
Lecture content was very interesting and showed lots of good videos and provided examples. But the textbook is heavily tested on and some of the midterm questions were very hard and the time crunch made it very difficult if not prepared throughly beforehand.
I loved my online class with Jeff, the material was very engaging and all you had to do was watch the lectures before the exams and do the readings (which can be a bit lengthy at time but that's the textbooks problem not his) his tests are very application based so be ready for that but I highly recommend taking his class fav of the semester
First two units were slides with everything already written which is misleading because people think the rest of the class is the same way. But as soon as the add/drop deadline passes, he gives almost blank notes that you can't learn anything from. You have to lengthy videos and most of the video is him telling long stories that he also tests on.
would not take online, had very high grades on 2nd midterm and final (95-96) and still ended with a meh letter grade, you'd be better off taking it in person where its less of a blind race
Please for the love of all things good DO NOT take this class I had a 92 and got a B+ save ur gpa and don't take it with him!!!!!
I took the online PSYCH 445 and had a very negative experience. The workload was heavy, with essays due every two weeks. Grading was inconsistent: one TA graded half of my essays and gave very low marks, while other TAs gave me near-perfect scores.
