Confusing, didn't explain material very well, and docked points on tests and quizzes for very minor things. He was horrible but wasn't great either.

Fun, funny, pretty easy and straightforward class. I'd take him again.
He explains the material very well and takes time to make sure you understand the concepts. He's funny and a great math teacher.
Very helpful with a good sense of humor. If you show up to class and keep up with work you should do good in the class.
Silly little man, teaches material well
A funny little old surfer hippie is how i would describe him. Nice and helpful when you need it just be sure to go to class and keep up with the homework and its an easy A.
I HATED TAKING THIS COURSE WITH THIS MAN... he is utterly insane... goes from one point to the next without offering any sort of connection or link... lectures were extremely unstructured. DROP IMMEDIATELY if you have class with this professor
Great teacher. He moves quickly, but explains topics very well. If you're not willing to do homework and keep up, don't take his class. He isn't very helpful outside class, so you should be self motivated. This was a perfect class environment for me. Never boring, and just challenging enough. :-)
When you first look at him you'd think he was a cool guy. He's pretty tough though. Lots of hw and quizes every week. Tests are kinda hard but not too bad. Will not let you make up anything even if you were honestly sick with a doctor's note so make sure you're in class. Not helpful out of class
Do not sign up for his class! His lectures are completely disassociated and he gets huffy when you ask questions! His quizzes don't test how well you know the material at all, and he uses class as a soapbox to indimidate students into thinking his way.
****bag. Untidy, unkempt and absolutely unprofessional. Petulant when questioned, injects his asinine take on politics into a mathematics course, and routinely distorts his lectures due to carelessness and haste. Avoid if you can.
He is helpful if you just ask, and he is willing to do a study session before the test. plus he lets you bring a page of notes to the class. If you go to class and pay attention, youll do fine.
This guy cannot explain anything without getting himself confused at the same time. I had a very hard time following and only passed because of the out of class work I did. There is homework every night and quizzes every week. You have to keep up with it all to do good.
this guy gets confused on every example he does. If you ask him a question all he says is that he already went over that and wont help you. I took this class so I wouldnt have to take bus 211. I do recommend this class over bus 211
I suck at math and this guy was the only one who could explain Alg to me. If you're having probs with this stuff, take him!
Very Difficult, unflexible teacher. Would not explain clearly than when you have just about got it after studying on your own, he over explains the material, confusing you even more than you were before.
He came off as though he didn't want to answer your questions and as if we should get it right away. He was a nice guy and had a pretty simple structure to the class.
Statistics is a hard subject to begin with and silverman does his best to make it even more unclear. His crazy hippy homeless hair distracts from everything he tries to teach. Tests are hard, getting help outside of class is harder. Use his reserved answer book in library 4 homework to get points.
Jeff is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. I have never felt like I teacher has wanted the class to fail before taking him. He made tons of mistakes on tests, quizzes, and when doing examples which made the curriculum very hard to follow. His callus attitude was the cherry on the top of this horrible math class that Jeff subjected us all t
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. Half of the time the students correct his work. He dont recommend this guy to anyone. He cant teach for anything. On his final that he gave only 8 out of 48 finished in the time given. His tests dont even make sense. If you need to take this class and have the grade count DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!!!
Hard class. He is very unclear and makes math even more confusing. Doesn't like answering questions and get mad when you dont understand the material right away. He thinks he is a great teacher and teaches so great and doesn't like to be questioned. You don't want to take math with him!!
Stats is hard and he makes it even harder! He doesn't answer questions and gets confused all the time. He is very unclear and hard to keep up with. Take stats with someone else!
I took summer school with this guy. He was nice ... until I showed up late one time!! hahahaha I really suck at Math and I passed the class! He was alright.
he came to class high. thats all i have to say.

He was very good. He cares that you learn the subject, he does anything to help. He is not hard on grading
if you need to get math 45 over and done with, don't take him. He's almost annoyed to help you even though he sets time aside to do so and the class will constantly correct his mistakes. He hates dealing with people who aren't good at math, so if this is you, take a better teacher.
Got a B in the class. Coulda got an A if I showed up more often. Easy teacher, fair grader, fair tests.
Don't take stats with him! Very unclear. I had to retake this class and it was so much easier taking it from someone else. He is very rude and doesn't anwser questions.
funny.....very helpful...i got a B...but i am a bad test taker....do your homeowrk and you will do great in the class...he answers any questions and will take a s much time is needed for a subject
evil evil man.
Okay teacher, it was my second time taking the class and i got an A. Makes a lot of mistakes on the board, but he will take time to answer any questions...quizes every week and HW is a must to pass the class. Nice guy though. Kinda hairy.
If you have questions he acts like you should already know and doesn't like to help, he gets an attitude every time. Do the homework and go to all the classes. He will do any question on the board from homework the next day so always have some ready when you come to class.
one of the worst math teachers i've ever had. since this is a remideal algebra class he expects students to do well. it's obvious that the students in the class are there for a reason...they don't understand the material well enough to pass the placement test. only class at ssu that i hated going to.
Homework is a must in this class, but it isn't hard. If you need help, all you have to do is ask. Gave a quiz every time we had class, but they weren't hard, and if you didn't get a good grade on them, then you knew you had to study. Let class out a little early, but if you needed help he would stay for about 20 min. Would take him again.
very unclear, makes lots of mistakes, scatterbrained during lecture, unhelpful. i hated going to this class. if you're not a natural at math, don't take him - you wont get it.

Mr. Sliverman is a good teacher if you give him a chance. You must do your homework before each class because he goes on with his lesson plan no matter what. He is not personable, but he will help if you ask and are persistant. I would reccomend him to a student who is familiar with stats already, if you are a beginner you should get another teache
he had a damn quiz every week!!
People who complain about the remedial classes should get over themselves. Jeff Silverman teaches quite a few remedial classes. At times he can be scatter-brained but wouldn't you be after going over high school math for 12 years? It's pretty easy as long as you aren't lazy. He gets the job done, case closed.
Would not let me make up a couple of quizzes I missed due to a serious illness with doctor's note. Only B I got in a college course - otherwise all A's. Should have fought it, but didn't seem worth the trouble at the time. BTW, I love stats! Have taken more with WAY better teachers. Nicer too. Long hair does not equal getting high all the time!
rely tough, hard to keep up...really confusing material not explained clearly
The only way i got through this course was to attend class on his level, stoned. Worst math teacher i have ever had.
Not very organized as far as the class being structured. There was no syllabus to follow
He has quizzes everyday just so that you can keep up with the work and so you dont get behind.(actually very helpful) and you have 3 tests which are not bad if you look over the review because that is the test. I would take him if I were you because if you dont understand the information he will go over it 100 times until you do.
if your a student athlete dont take him. i missed the midterm because we had a game and he wouldn't let me retake it, instead my final was doubled. not cool. i got behind too and couldn't catch up. you learn new material every class. quiz every day. he looks like someone out of jerimiah johnson or some grizzly man. lol.
Funny looking hippy dude. Students always need to correct him. Helpful if you ask, but you will be rushed for time. Easy to get a good grade in his class if you are able to easily pick up math. Quizes every thursday. Drops 2 lowest quiz grades. Kind of easy midterms. A point of easy extra credit possible each day (they add up).
jeff was great and really really helpful. daily quizes so you really can't ever miss class or you'll fall behind but they are easy and if you stay on top of the work you can get an A.
In class quiz every day, so you can't miss one or you will fall behind. The quizzes are easy as long as know what you are studying. He goes over the material fast so if you don't understand stop him and ask him to go over it again and he will have no problem doing so. The exams are all the quizzes from the semester put together so keep them
Hippie teacher who isn't that clear when teaching. I read the book instead during class because it taught better than him. Easy class - quiz every week and homework every night. Midterms were short and basic. Group projects easy too. If you read the book, it's a very easy class to pass. Just do the work. Don't miss class, you'll miss out.
He's just ok. Has a test everyday which are easy but if your sick and can't make it your in trouble. Has homework everynight. Gives extra credit if you do the homework I learned a lot he's good at that but still got a C cause I was absent a couple times.
HARD!! I studied so much for this class! I went to all the classes, went to his office hours where he makes you feel stupid, i had study groups. I had a solid B going into the final and walked out with a C. SOOOO MAD. he has no email so you cant reach him and his really scatterbrained. stay away!
Hey is never clear with what he says, if your able to take someone else do it. Horrible teacher don't know how he was able to get his teaching credentials.
This guy is really unorganized and gets lost in his thoughts and makes mistakes on the board. He's nice though and has a fair grading and attendance policy. If you dont want to read the textbook, dont take his class.
he usually gives a quiz every class, and assigns a lot of hw that he doesn't grade(cus he's lazy). This can be a big problem if you are a bad tester, you have a chance to earn a FEW extra credit pts by doing homework problems on the board. So take advantage of that. other than that, he's a very rigid grader and doesnt cut much slack or help at all!
He does not explain things at all. If you take his class enroll in the workshop MATH 107W. Math is not my strong subject so his style of teaching was not helpful at all. If you are great at math, you will love his teaching methods.
Not clear most of the time and tries to love fast through lectures it seems, also will mess up on problems A LOT and IN CLASS so hopefully you might have some smart people in there to correct him.
Not clear most of the time and tries to love fast through lectures it seems, also will mess up on problems A LOT and IN CLASS so hopefully you might have some smart people in there to correct him.
not clear and just "never minds" on some of the problem that he couldn't solve.... I was afraid of asking questions because he expects you to know soo much from algebra2 and geometry stuff....
I liked his class because he gave short cuts to everything and made it simple..ONCE you understood it. If you didnt understand youll have to go to office hours because he "never minds" half the questionns. Very scattered class structure.
His stats class is not too hard. He is a little scattered, but he will help you during his office hours. I would suggest not missing a class though. Its hard to catch up on the material. He goes through it quickly.
I have always loved math, and been good at it. But he ruined math for me, and I got a D!! I am being forced to retake his class again, and DYING to switch professors!
Jeff is a cool guy! It is true he is a bit of a scatterbrain but he's a nice guy and the class is very do-able if you pay attention and keep up with the work load (which isn't very much). Not nearly as bad as people say. Get stats done with Jeff!
Not a good teacher if you're bad at math. The textbook's totally confusing and has weird problems. You need the workbook, he'll give you extra credit on the midterms if you pull out completed pages from it. Bad at listening, makes a bunch of mistakes but grades fairly and will fix changes.
scatterbrain
This guy is the worst teacher I've had in a long time. Constantly makes mistakes while teaching his lessons, making it impossibly confusing. Quizes are ridiculously easy, while the tests are ridiculously hard. Stay sway from him. A wasted semester.
I always thought I was bad at math but he made the subject really understandable. I lucked out having such a good teacher. He's nice and if you study and do your work you will do well. Dunno why other ppl gave mean reviews :(
This guy would be someone nice to know outside of class, but other then that stay away from this teacher. He teaches as if you have already taken the class and passed it with an A. He doesn't break down any of the concepts. His tests are harder then they should be. Also his group quiz concept is highly ineffective and you'll find it frustrating.
I loved this class. The reason people dont like him because he expects you to know how to do simple math concepts. If you are not an achiever and are not confident in math then this class may be harder. If you sit in the front and ask questions it will be a breeze. His tests are not hard he gives you 10% extra credit just for doing the HW. GREAT.
Definitely try to avoid this professor if at all possible. I took this EXACT class in high school and he explains everything ten times more complicated than it should be. He is a total scatterbrain and doesn't know what he is talking about a lot of the time. Worst class I've taken so far.
Homework due every Thursday, you have one week to do it. Must be typed. Classes seem rushed and focus entirely on computer work. Take home midterm, not bad. In class midterm and summative final, much worse. However you're allowed 5 pages of notes for ea. I would recommend finding another professor if you plan on taking this class.
This teacher does not know how to explain geometry or concepts. He confuses you too much. So far every math teacher that has taught me at SSU has been horrible and this is one of them. He shows you a problem and does not clarify what he is doing. He is a nice guy though. SSU needs to clean out some of there math department.
Most confusing professor. Does not like to help you if you have a question. He rushes through lecture and gets mad if you don't understand him.
He is a great and very sweet teacher. He is a little all over the place in some senses and can get frustrated but I truly learned a lot from him and hope to have him again. His tests were hard but I had no problem maintaining a good grade in his class. If you are willing to be attentive and ask questions when you are confused, you will do well!
Fantastic teacher. Interesting guy. Really cares about his students. Take his class!
Total scatterbrain. Really confusing teacher. Likes to rush through lectures and won't help if needed. Complains that "This should be easy. Figure it out." His only office hours are right before class, so he can't help you if you were confused about something in class. Avoid at all costs!
Very hard class for someone who isn't the best at math or hasn't taken math in a while. He is very scattered doesn't know what he taught in each class. Always claims that should be easy but isn't always. Often will laugh if you say an answer or have a comment ant isn't consistent with what is taught and is on the test.
I get where a lot of the negative comments are coming from; however, compared to the other MATH 165 professors, Silverman is great. His quiz questions almost always come straight from the worksheets. Go to class, ask questions, do the homework and you should receive a passing grade.
He was the worst. He was never all there, and actually made me hate math. He's very cocky and thinks he knows everything. He was one of the worst teachers I've ever had, avoid taking him at all costs!!!
He is terrible! Very rude to his students and is a complete know it all and will look at you like you're an idiot if you do not understand. Doesnt know what class he teaches what so you will often give you homework that has problems you haven't learned. Save yourself and avoid him at all cost unless you want a RUDE professor and to retake the class
I just love the fact that his average class grade was a 65% so how is that considered TEACHING!?! his homework is graded on one question chosen randomly by his grader and you only get full points if you get it right. But he doesn't give the answers to all the problems so how do you know you got it wrong to ask him?! DO NOT TAKE HIM
Gets mad at the class when they don't clearly understand brand new topics. Very little help and everything he explains is in a crazy old fashioned way.
He was a poor teacher. Very disorganized, was not helpful at all, and, in my experience, made me feel stupid when I asked for assistance on concepts I did not understand.
He can be a bit annoyed with his students sometimes, but that's only because they don't ask questions. He gets frustrated when his students are too scared to ask questions and then don't understand the material. Literally just ask him to clarify and he will be glad to do so.
He is a rude teacher and is not helpful in class. When asking a question he will give you an answer in a sarcastic way. He finally started to teach the last 2 weeks of class (which is only 4 classes) and during the final review he told us to look up the answers in the book. It was a tough class and was definitely not easy. Study your butt off!
This is the worse teacher I have ever had by far this guy will only answer one question for the homework. when the whole class failed three quizzes in a row he did not go over anything and acted surprised when everyone got a c or lower on the midterm he never comes prepared and quizzes and exams missing part of the problems making it confusing
Avoid if you can, but if you can't, it is possible to pass the class. Offers office hours which are very helpful. Quizzes every week, he is a scatterbrain/jumpy, and tests can be difficult. Take good notes and work hard. If you're stuck in this class, just make sure you understand all concepts every week. You are capable of passing.
You're better off learning math from the textbook. If you're a student that wants to be treated with respect, avoid this class.
He expects you to take your workload and makes sure you do it, doesn't take into consideration that you are a working college student.
Tests are very tough. Cuts corners when explaining an example to save time when all it does is cost him more time because no one understands him. Overall besides the tough test he is a bit scatter brained, is not consistent with due dates, and not very clear. I like Professor Silverman, but I would not want to take his class again.
Weekly hw, as expected for a math class. However, he barely teaches material. i found myself basically teaching myself from the textbook or youtube videos as he only makes sense to himself. Teaches in shortcuts that arent helpful, weekly quizzes, Tests are hard, however he does reuse questions from past quizzes so study from those, 1 midterm& final
Silverman's class is very difficult. He skips corners during lecture. His tests are difficult and has many quizzes. His quiz questions come straight from the homework or lecture. He assigns homework from the textbook and online. His class might be difficult to learn from but he has office hours which can be very helpful. Use your resources!!
He knows a lot of stuff but isnt the right teacher if you want never taken calculus before. He makes you google every single question you don't know and doesn't explain things 100% of the time
Pretty much the worst teacher I have ever had. Doesnt know how to stay on track or how to explain to students. He also is extremely rude to his students as well. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR
Jeff Silverman is an interesting professor. He knows his stuff about math but may get flustered a lot. My class has corrected him on multiple occasions. He is very helpful during his office hours and really appreciates it when students actually try in the class and try to do well.
One of the best professors at Sonoma State. Very enthusiastic about statistics. He is willing to help anyone that needs it at office hours. His lectures are very interesting and make math fun. Take this class.
Professor Silverman is one of the best teachers I've had. He doesn't explain too much in class but office hours are very useful. Turn homework in every week on one day and a quiz every week on the other day so make sure you show up! Quizzes are based solely off of homework questions. Overall easy class especially if you have a calculus background.
Look, teaching Calculus sounds really damn hard, so good for anyone who tries to teach it, but Silverman is the runt of the liter when it comes to Calc professors at SSU. He had the semester from hell because of the fires so he deserves a little slack but he was a mess. Due dates are very confusing, constantly messing up board problems, a mess.
By far the worst teacher Ive had, very jumpythrough his board problems over all very unorganized doesnt give many resources, can be rude at times. Avoid taking this class but if youre stuck just deal with it. Ask questions even though e might make you feel dumb its actually not impossible to learn the material
worst math teacher I have ever experienced.
DO NOT TAKE!!! He is unorganized and honestly an all round bad teacher.
By far the worst math teacher at SSU. Do everything you can to avoid having him as your professor. Doesn't teach material wel. Expects you to know a lot of material coming into the class and will not teach topics that he feels you should already know. Unless you have a great background in calculus, expect to pass the class with no greater than a C.
Silverman is unclear on his expectations and a poor lecturer. He expects us to know the answers to his questions before he teaches us. He will give us a problem to work on then leave the classroom before we can ask him questions. I would not take Silverman if there are any alternatives. You will struggle without prior calc knowledge or tutoring.
I have him this year. At the moment he isnt very specific on what we should know and what hes trying to teach us. He assigns homework we dont go over as much in class. Then somehow, expects people to do well on the tests. At the beginning of the year(which was three and half weeks ago) there was 25 students, now there are only 13
He is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He does not teach. He will do a problem himself on the board and expect us to do a whole workbook page of them. Lacked sympathy for those struggling and asking questions, he rather told us to look through our notes, which we had none, and left us unanswered.I failed and tell everyone not to take him
doesn't know how to teach, confuses himself during his own lectures, forgets what homework he assigns and will quiz you on the wrong problems. Unsympathetic teacher and hard to reach (he doesn't have WiFi?).
Jeff Silverman lacks the ability to give students decent and clear notes to study from. I strongly recommend you not take any type of math class taught by him.
Jeff Silverman is by far the worst math professor at SSU. His lectures make zero sense, and his way of answering your questions is by making you feel so stupid that you just struggle quietly. Going to his office hours does not help at all either, he explains things in his own way (which is just him saying "you get this by doing this and this).
Taking this as a fully online class with Silverman should not be an option. I took stats senior year of high school and finished with an A, this man overcomplicates every assignment and is not considerate with students' technology issues. Homework and quizzes are easy if you just read text, but the test directions are never clear. He doesn't curve.
Hes not helpful at all. On his online class when students ask a question he doesn't even help and humiliates the student. He barely actually teaches in his class. He has videos but puts minimal effort and never really works out the problem only explains it verbally. Don't this class if your a visual learner youll just have to teach yourself
So horrible! I got an A in stats during my senior year of high school and I took early start math in the summer but I barely passed this class. There is 1 quiz every week along with 2 homework assignments every week. The quizzes are nothing like the homework and are extremely hard. I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone, he was terrible.
The course felt like it was not taught by him Rather than a course called "wiley plus" He just guides you in the steps. Whenever asked a question, he would always seem bothered. His course overall was very bland. The textbook will be your main source of knowledge. You'll. basically teach yourself! Avoid this professor if possible.
He was one of the worst teachers I have had. The class was on zoom and during the lectures, which were usually 10 minutes, he basically just reread examples from the book. He is not very informative and there are lots of homework assignments and quizzes. Most of the quizzes had an average grade of below 60% with no curve. Awful.
Silverman's class is simply not good. He's rude, barely accessible outside of class, and will be very condescending when you do reach out for help. Might be my least favorite class I've taken at Sonoma State.
Took his online course and it consisted of watching a video before attending the zoom to know what you are learning about and15 minute zoom calls where he would show you examples of the problems you were doing. He would offer extra help but when asked he would be bothered. Such a horrible teacher DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Jeff Silverman is a good professor on paper, but in zoom he is bad. Please stop doing zoom Jeff. Best regards. He inspired me to never want to do a single other math problem again.
I took stats and AP stats in high school and ended with a B in this class. You basically have to teach yourself (using an online textbook, which you use for everything else, except for the final which uses different types of questions than you're used to) because all his lectures are, is him reading a few examples. Don't exactly recommend.
He is very rude and condescending. Offers help then is extremely bothered when you ask. Does NOT know how to work zoom then gets mad at the class. He moves very fast compared to other classes. There are 2 homework assignments a week and a quiz every Wednesday. Overall do not recommend.
I thought this class was pretty easy once I started paying attention. The only reason I would not recommend this professor is because he is mostly unwilling to help students. His office hours are alright, but he will not cut you slack if you have ANY kind of emergency situation. That alone made this class very stressful for me last semester.
I am taking Professor Silverman’s class currently, and he is just rude. Has a very scattered teaching style which leads to little material learned, and in a 2 hour lecture he only covers about 2-3 problems. Harsh grader and unwilling to give extra help to students who may need it, even though he “offers it”. don’t take his class
I took him last semester, he is terrible on zoom. Wording on his quizzes is super hard to understand, you can't recheck your answers on the quizzes either. When you asks questions he never really helps or gives you a very good answer. I would never recommend him to someone. If you have the chance to to take literally anyone else, I would do so.
While Professor Silverman isn't very accommodating to missing quizzes or exams due to any reason, he does take off your lowest 2 homework scores, lowest 2 quiz scores, and 1 lowest exam. If you pay attention to his teaching, this class will be very easy. If you don't, it will be very difficult.
Pro tips: -quizzes are easy of you pay attention and do your homework most questions are from the homework -if you get a problem wrong on homework you have 3 attempts, so wait to do the question until in class when you can ask him to go over it -DO THE MOCK EXAMS he takes many questions from the mock exams and puts them on the real one
This professor was good at giving us the material right away but would get annoyed if someone asked a question. We basically had to teach ourselves he just guided us through certain problems.
Professor Silverman does not teach the material. He will only go over a few example problems and then expect you to know how to do the rest of the problems perfectly. He is very condescending when you ask questions in class and gets mad at you when you correct a mistake that he made. Class requires much time outside of the class to study to pass.
Do not choose this class with this man. He is so unhelpful. When you ask a question he answers with sarcasm or makes it a trick question. He doesn't care to make an effort in giving make ups in emergency cases where even the school council is involved or if there is a technical issues. If something doesn't go his way he is arrogant and cruel.
His teaching style is very confusing. He asks for questions and then makes us feel stupid when we have questions. Would not recommend.
If you'd like a class where you can't ask questions this is the perfect class for you! Jeff makes you feel stupid whenever you ask a question and he is very unorganized. He doesn't teach, he just goes over examples and expects you to understand. I took 2 of his classes and both were taught in the exact same format.
Okay at teaching the material. Tries to explain problems in more than one way leading to confusion. He has weekly quizzes that are just the basics of what are being taught and the exams only consist of problems that are copied and pasted directly from the workbook, no number change or anything, which makes it super easy to study. Notecards on exams
Does not teach material to students who do not know about it rather he teaches by just figuring it out himself and walking through the problem. Not flexible and does not like being asked questions. Never prepared and half the time cannot figure out his own problems.
Silverman does not care about his students, makes you figure things out by yourself and does not care about your issues with electronics or workbooks even if the bookstore printed the wrong thing. I do not recommend his class!
Just as incompetent as he looks. A festering wound in SSU's math department. Should have been weeded out long ago, but somehow remains. Barely literate enough to understand the material, let alone teach it. He would literally just leave class and pace around the building while we were taking quizzes. He's funny sometimes though.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Never had anyone so unwilling to teach or be asked questions in a class. If anything was asked from him he will whine and complain and make you feel stupid for asking at all.
He forced me to take a syllabus quiz on a syllabus I never received since I transferred into the class on the second day since I was waitlisted. He also has terrible handwriting and every day will move onto a new topic so if you miss a class or don't fully understand then good luck. Also is sometimes is abrasive when answering questions.
This professor wasn't very accessible outside of class. They're not very clear what will or won't be on tests. The tests/quizzes were very stressful but he does drop the 2 worst quiz scores. He's a very picky grader. The final project was a very hard project. This has been my most stressful class.
Unwilling to help & when he does is extremely condescending. Had to tell him to stop being so aggressive in his tone. Borderline unreachable, nasty, arrogant, and cannot see flaw in his teaching when over half the students are failing. He holds back the math department decades and when someone called him a festering wound they weren't kidding.
Worst class I've ever taken. Students would ask for questions/clarification and the professor would not know how to solve the math. If you struggle with math this class will be near impossible.
Silverman does not teach. His
Does not teach. His teaching style is walking through problems, expects you know how to do them first try and move on, asking questions feels intimidating. Difficult class, especially if you do not like math, and sometimes does not know how to solve his own problems. Very strict and difficult for what is a lower level math course. Drop or avoid.
I would chalk up this professor's ratings as a primarily mutual dislike for math by many people. His class wasn't anything out of the ordinary, which his ratings don't show. I never studied but paid attention in class and did the homework and I got a pretty decent grade.
I had a very hard time with Silverman, he is not good at what he does. He is very strict and really intimidating for no reason and being in the class just felt exhausting. His grading is all over the place, a lot of quizzes, and the math teaching didn't feel like it was being taught, more so of figuring it out with no other context. Just awful.
Rude He won't help you if you need assistance or have a question. He makes mistakes and gets mad when corrected by students multiple times. Disrespectful towards the class repeatedly telling us"I will see you guys next semester" so he didn't want us to succeed. The worst experience.
Don't take him unless you absolutely have to. Lol
Professor Silverman has a very specific teaching style that can be challenging, but using resources like unstuck ai alongside the textbook can really help. Stay engaged and you'll get through this tough course.
The worst professor I've ever had. Do not take him if you care about your GPA. He's horrible with technology. He claims he's open to answering questions but then responds in a sarcastic manner that doesn't even explain anything. He's so rude, and not willing to help his students. He's talks about how people don't pass his class (hes the problem).
Jeff Silverman should not even be teaching anymore. He is terrible with technology and told us not to email him with questions because the letter C on his keyboard doesn't work. Also only checks his email once a day for one hour. I dreaded coming to this class but attendance is mandatory or else you will miss a lot. Very rude and sarcastic.
He is very condescending if you ask questions, and is very bad at explaining the terms he is talking about. He is always negative and seems to be in a bad mood, and that is definitely reflected in his class. Tests are a huge part of your grade, so if you're even the slightest bit lost in class please get help from a tutor or LARC to pass.
It's a fairly easy class but if you don't understand the material he doesn't really work with you. Exams are fairly different from homework's and quizzes so that can make it confusing but if you understand the concepts then you'll be fine. Not very math heavy, more conceptual.
I got 100s on the homework and went to class. The tests were never like the homework, and I never passed any of them. He doesn't teach; he's just doing problems on the board, and expects everyone to comprehend. He preaches to always ask questions, but whenever asked, he looked at me like I was an idiot and never helped. No one I knew passed.
He isn't the devil that some of these reviews make him seem like. No I wouldn't take him again, but that's because about 95% of the class is on you to teach yourself the material. He definitely is subpar at answering questions and clarifying. Tons of homework and a tough grader. Just be ready to take the class in to your own hands it's all on you.
Do not take this class if you require any academic accommodations, he is impossible to reach outside of class and still hasn't put in any attendance grades even though we have no more classes this semester. Projects will come out of nowhere, and he will not answer your questions despite asking for them then gets frustrated you asked.
I loved taking Jeff's class this semester! Math has never been my strong suit so don't let my grading spook you. He has great classes full of useful information that you'd see on the quizzes which are online. I appreciate how he makes sure the class gets what he is trying to say by pausing after each topic to see if we need him to reexplain.
I stopped wearing my seatbelt in hopes I wouldn't make it to his class. Please listen to the reviews and don't take this class for the sake of your sanity. He encourages questions, but proceeds to look at you like ur psychotic when you do. His grading doesn't make sense and calls you out if you score bad. Choose another professor at all costs.
