Doesn't offer any office hours.
very clear....but very hard exams...
didn't seem interested in what he was doing, look pissed off constantly
stupidly hard tests.... no half marks?? class ave on midterm, 2.3/10?
he deserves better ratings!
Seems like a good guy. Don't understand why you guys hate him.
Great notes, but the tests were auful and he was the worst with helping

Very condescending when asking for explainations.
I want to cry, I want a way out

SEXY AND COOL BUT VERY EASY EXAMS
Good job and nice midterm, hopefully same trend will continue till end
I want to drop out
He's pretty good...easy midterm so far..unlike Hayden
No Comments
LOL he made fun of some students dumb question. But if it's a good one he'll listen and explain. Doesn't look like a science geek and covers lots of material. Wish he had formula sheets for midterms. I'm going to die on the final : (
easy course, easy prof

Somebody actually say he is a good prof? This is unbelievable. Simple exams that does not mean anything. The whole purpose of an exam is to get a normal distribution curve out of it, whereas Hayden's exams actually mean something.
Takes so much time w/ easy stuff but rushes through the hard stuff. Shy guy. Face gets all red when you ax him a Q.
told me not to stalk him. no office hours. boring stuck up voice. does not care about students at all. likes to make midterms have gaussian curves. I curse him and his gaussian curves.
Simple and easy. Not so interesting though. Can't really tell what he's thinking when he's smiling.

no office hours. does not like to answer questions. simplifies everything down to physics 12 level. midterms are easy - but don't test you fully on what's important in the curriculum. you're screwed if this is a prerequisite for something else
Very well organized notes and lectures. Presents information in logical order at the appropriate pace. As lectures are so carefully pre-designed, there is little time for discussion during class. Assignments are fair but exams are surprisingly hard.
Not helpful and very unfreidly. Notes well organized, exams hard. Lets way too much cheating go on in his class.
The way he teaches makes the class seem so damn easy. But it isn't actually like that. Exams were a lot tougher than the hmwk. Do not study hmwk for exams, instead focus on concepts.
avoid him
This guy is no a nice person, just go try and talk to him, you will know what I mean. He could not care less about the students. He is not the hardest prof I have had, but he is defiantly the most unfriendly prof I have ever had. I recommend you avoid him.
Easy homework questions, but harshly marked - a bit deceptive. Very good lectures. Difficult exams. Into curving. But, people skills lack; almost creepy. Won't help students at all on assign's, or in any other way. Puts in the minimum. As if he's on a "work to rule" job action, but all the time!

this course is just as easy a physics 1oo, this is totally grade 12 review. However you gota watch out the prof, he will mark the exams are harsh as possible. He will pick on any detail that did not met his expectations. His exams are out of few marks, so losing a whole mark on some unecessary detail should be avoided
Okay notes, poor explanation, and very little "care" factor when it comes to passing information along to students.
he's a nice guy. his notes are neat. but its more about the textbook. he knows what he's doing, but not so much how to teach. .. cant help but feel bad when half his class is empty. if you get your physics, then you're good to go. if you dont, then .. lol
Class averages were below 50%, which he attributed solely to students.
Not bad for a physic prof. People say he's bad and all, but you have to remember it's physic. It's very hard to teach physic. I have to say though, he's not the most interesting person in the world. however, he do try his best.
Had him for this course back in Spring '04. As other posters have said, the material as presented (clearly printed, though) looks deceptively simple. Homework is way tougher, and the exams are in between. He has quite the attitude problem when it comes to students and I avoided PHYS 385 because he was the one teaching it. I took CHEM 464 instead.
I used to believe physics is very easy and intersting but not anymore now. I just hate it now. Probably because I am the only BUS students there. I feel he is just another SCIENCE prof. faceless and no emotion at all. Boring lecture which he keeps talking and writting down note the whole class while half the seats are empty.
He is a very nice person and specially helpful when u go to his office. Fair assignments and easy exams. I cant believe anyone call him a bad prof. I think if a student doesn't like him, that's probably because they don't study enough or they are just aren't good at physics.
this guy should find himself a new job, he treats the class like dumb ppl, plus hes not approachable!
very bad at teaching
Lecture notes make everything look simple, but assignments/exams are way more intense. Although he has a dry sense of humor, tends to mock most of the obnoxious kids trying to be funny in his class... yet they don't pick up on it hahah
Has serious attitude problems...notes dont help at all for homeworks or exams..worst prof ever
If you fail his class it's your fault. This prof is the best I've seen, considering he is teaching physics. Bell curves are useless. If you study, truly study you will be fine. The material is very basic mostly physics 12 stuff. I don't know how anyone can fail his class.
he's a really bad professor. i went up to ask him question, but he didn't reply me... its funny how i got higher on the midterm when i didn't study... he has attitude problems. avoid him
This guy was terrible, I don't know why he's allowed to teach, he has no interest in his students whatsoever and he is a very condescending man.
His lectures were boring and he's not very approachable but his tests are really easy. Pay attention, although it's difficult with him, and you'll be fine. As far as his teaching goes, he should start focusing on concepts more. It would help more in the long run.
Not the nicest prof out there, never seems to be in a really good mood. Exams aren't very difficult. Refuses to post notes or past exams.
Useless, doesnt teach concepts, and confuses the hell out of stuff you already know. Midterms arent bad, final was hard.
he cant teach at alllll
I had him as my 1st physics prof when i first started in sfu, shoulda listened to my friend when he said he was horrible. notes suck, he goes super fast even though he said he'll go @ a slow pace. he's also got bad attitude.he also made simple integrals look hard for those who has forgotten/never used them.
Terrible at explaining, and is always in a bad mood, is condescneding to his students. Doesn't encourage questions or office hours.
He is the worse person/prof I have ever seen. He is not even knowledgeable for the course he is teaching. He has sever attitude problem and is very condescending person. He skips hard concepts but when it comes to simple things he explains as if he is a noble prize winner and no one else can understand it. STAY AWAY FROM HIM, YOU ARE SAFE.
EXTREMELY NOT HELPFUL! Horrible course, annoying online assignments, which he usually "BUSY" not in OHs to help, even he's there, you are just too "SMART" he doesnt want to teach you. Do not take his course or you will regret, take another professor!!
Horrible prof. He has one way of explaining concepts and if you ask him to clarify something he just repeats exactly what he said. He is not helpful in office hours. Homework was impossible. I used to like physics, and now I hate it. :'(
**** YOU
Him+mastering physics+homework+midterms+final=destruction
I haven't been to his lecture for about a month now but it is not like I regularly attend his lectures anyway. When I first attended his class, his lecture was boring so I started skipping. The midterms are fairly easy, they are just simple Physics 12 stuff. I haven't done the final yet. So I don't know.
avoid him. he is the worst professor in my life. his attitude is very rude and his lecture note is useless. Assignments are very hard and exam is not fair.
actually this course is useless.sfu just want to rob $.we learnt all that stuff in high school. the only new thing is special relativity.you learn that and you are invincible at the final. jeff doesnt explain properly, sometimes i dont even know wat hes talking about.reading the text will help.(ps:i dont go to lecture)I got A-,thanks to physics11/12
He's an alright person and the class is fair. Do your homework and remember you physics 11/12 and you will do great. Teaches random stuff which is not even on final.
Good prof. The course is just physics 12 basically so if you know that stuff you WILL get an A in this class. The midterms are easy. He can sometimes be boring though. I don't take notes in class but his examples are well chosen and reflect what will be on the tests. He also posts previous midterms online which are very helpful.
Class notes are really useless. I did my homework by using phys 11 and 12 notes. He makes simple concepts harder then they actually seem. If you reread your phys 11 and 12 notes then you will do well on the midterms and finals.
he's an ass doesn't give out lecture notes and doesn't help students u ask him whats on the test. he will say: i wont tell u..!! don't take his course
Absolutely the worst prof ever. Doesn't help his students and post up the most useless in class lecture notes ever. If you don't attend his class, he doesn't post them online so what is the use? Avoid this prof!
This course is a duplicate of Phys 12 in high school. However never go to his lecture since he confuses you the stuff you already know. Just study your phys 12 notes and midterms/final is a piece of cake.
I learned nothing more from him teaching than I did from grade ten physics. This class is a breeze, but you really only need to go to class for smart physics questions, the rest there is no point in being there.
My GOD!! where to start?? if you can go to any other physics course then, DO IT!! the only reason I'm writing this is because i wouldn't even wish for my enemy to be stuck with him. really if i knew i had one hour to live, id spend it in his class cause it lasts for Freaking eternity!!!!! PS: his TAs suck too!! and the tutorials are useless!
Just terrible. Very condescending, does not explain concepts well and the textbook used is not very useful. Survived easily with Physics 12 notes from highschool. Only good thing about him is that he is respectful to the learning environment
He is a useless teacher. His lectures are boring and he has no idea how to control the class. He says he is available for extra help, but he really isn't. Students are too scared to approach him because when someone asks a question online he calls that students stupid, essentially. Not a respectful teacher and doesn't deserve our respect.
He is overall an okay person; however, not really good at clarifying the materials taught in the class. The textbook, SmartPhysics, is a pain to use since there are no actual solutions for it. Even though you can find solutions online (Yahoo Answers), some of them are incorrect and can lead to more misunderstanding.
He is so mean.
hes is a bad prof the course is really easy forces people to attend lecture with iclick and makes tutorial manditory for marks. doesnt even have his own lecture material takes it from smartphyiscs
He's an extremely mean person and terrible at teaching. Exams are stupidly easy tho. Easy A+
Classes are boring as hell.. Doesn't teach his own stuff, found midterms really hard, but final was fairly easy
Awful prof- makes easy concepts ridiculously and unnecessarily complicated. Also very unhelpful- doesn't have office hours and doesn't actually answer questions if you ask. Made me hate a subject I loved.
Great professor. He explains the concepts clearly and emphasizes the proper way to learn physics. He does a good job teaching to a large class with a diverse range of interest in physics. Would certainly take another course from him.
He is the worst teacher I have ever seen. class note is useless and his explanation make concepts more confusing. He is not approachable and does not answer any question outside the class. He is very good to make easy concepts confusing. I didn't learn anything from his class. Stay away from him and do not take any course with this guy.
the worst person and teacher.
Make things complicate. Make us attend his class. Test and Quizzes are hard. Relys on smartphysics too much. Not enough practice for us. Ignore our questions, does not answer emails.
NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS, useless teacher. all he does is stand and clicks his slides and confuses the students. gives no resources to practice problems with. He relies on a website to give students "Pre-lectures" which are completely useless.
Useless professor. Relies solely on smartphysics and practice midterms are useless as well. The TA'S do a better job at teaching his class than he does. If you can avoid his class, do so at all costs.
He's not that bad, I had him for physics lab. He's quite clear and quite patient, gives hints without completely giving the answer. Everyone who's complaining about smart physics doesn't understand that's the department's choice, and he's forced to use it.
The way he explain the problem is quite confusing for people who don't understand the topic very well. He's a nice guy, but I just wish he can make his explanation easier.
He is very nice guy that tries his best to make sure you learn the material. He make the class easier to help the students do better. The level of difficultly for his tests are intermediate.
Just terrible and condescending,
Worst professor you will ever have at SFU. He is horrendous at explaining things and his lectures are useless. Don't even bother going because attendance is not mandatory. Just teach yourself. Also, his exams are impossible. Good Luck!
avoid him please.
Very bad professor! his lectures are useless and he is not willing to help you in his office hour, if you can even find him. just do not take any course with him.
He didn't give notes or practice exams. He said there was no need for a textbook. Everything was from smart physics which was not sufficient. The TA was more useful and helpful than him. Don't take a class with him if you love your GPA.
I had him for physics lab. He is extremely useless and condescending. He is not willing to help you or so. Thanks to TAs, they were very useful and in fact we learned from the TAs.
Worst prof ive ever had. useless lectures. youre better off not going to class
He is terrible in explaining the concepts, even at the undergrad level. Very useless lectures, and is not availabe for extra help outside the class.
Lectures are at undergrad level, still vague. extremely poor lectures. He shouldn't teach at all.
Nice guy
Lots of "um" in lectures, this prof cant teach. Over confuses concepts and everything can be learnt online from the prelecture homework videos.
One of most arrogant profs @ SFU. Don't bother asking questions. You'll get more teaching from the online learning than you will from him.
As the head of the Physics department, it's obvious he knows his stuff. However, he seems wish to be elsewhere, putting minimal effort possible to the course. Lectures are not as useful as they could be as he rushes through the important content and occasionally goes on class-long tangents. Exams seem to be fair though. Google taught me mostly.
He was extremely rude and unprofessional. He lacks communication ability with the students, and he doesn't have the enthusiasm while teaching (its like he is being forced). Also, his exams are extremely hard, with connections and ideas that we have NOT covered in class. I would certainly not take this class with him again if I fail.
Impolite, cannot teach well.
Jeff Sonier is an awful professor. The man obviously knows what he is talking about but cannot communicate the material with the class. Physics 120 Is hard yet he makes it even harder. He is immature and sassy to his students when they ask questions and his exams are impossible. Youll need luck just getting a 60 on the exams.
absolutely terrible... if you wanna enjoy university don't ever take this guy
Jeff sonier is hands down an AWFUL professor. He overcomplicates the material and involves way too complicated formulas or explanations for easier (not extremely easy) concepts. Phys 120 is hard yet he makes it 1000x harder. Dont bother asking questions, youll get a sassy response. Worst professor, take these reviews seriously.
The test problems given are significantly more difficult and 2 steps up from all the practice that we've been given through Sapling, the textbook, and lecture content. The lectures themselves are monotone and he does not clearly answer students questions. I'd rather have waited a semester to take this course with a different professor.
It's clear that Jeff rather be doing anything else than teaching. He does not really care about his students and will make no extra effort to help you out. Jeff is condescending and rude when answering questions , as well as generally unprofessional. Tests are also fairly hard. Avoid if possible.
listen man, the class isnt curved. the midterms and final are worth 70% combined so if you mess up. you're done for. the homework? its easy to forget it even exists + I got enroled l8 into the course too so gn to 10% of my homework grade. its better to learn online than to show up to lecture cuz he doesnt really do examples in class.
When I tell you I have never met a worse professor than Jeff, I mean it. He is an awful professor. He does not care about your education one bit. He seems like he hates his job and will not teach you a single thing. You will have to teach yourself everything as tutorials are useless and he just reads off of lecture slides. Avoid Jeff.
I think he just misses Trudy Moore. Ask him.
Did not seem to care about the education of his students. He only gave us five homework assignments and they were extremely difficult. Tests were no different, they were hard because we did not understand the course material adequately. Homework questions were over the top difficult. I did not truly understand the course but somehow passed.
unhelpful & unjust
Wow it's 2024 and people still roast Jeff. No surprise. I had him in 2007 and his class was one of the first things I took in my first semester. He doesn't teach/help. His TA suck. His hw are long and impossible. If you love your GPA, avoid him.
Jeff's class is a mixed bag - lectures can be dry, but using Unstuck ai and other resources like the textbook helps. Stay engaged and you'll learn a lot, even if he's not the most engaging prof.
He's kind of intimidating; I felt a bit judged when our group did something wrong sometimes. Honestly, the TAs are more helpful than him during the labs. However, with using the software he was helpful and sometimes will hint answers. I would only take his course for PHYS132 since it is an easier course.
