For a Global Technology class, he certainly has a hard time working the A/V equipment. Very specific with instructions, every question on the midterm practice quiz was on the actual exam. You have to try to get a bad grade!
Very Easy A!
This guy is a great teacher! He is VERY clear and VERY helpful. He is the most up to date MASC teacher Ive had so far (very important in this field). Practice questions on Blackoard are very helpful. More teachers should be this way.
Very structured and organized class and teacher. All you have to do is take his online quizes until you get all the questions right(not as hard as it sounds at all) and you will get A's. Hes really nice and kinda cute. Go to his classes, there interesting
I've had him for both ethics and masc151. He's a great teacher, very clear. Fun to be around in and out of class and always there to help. I highly suggest him for mass comm majors and for your ethics req. in any major.
This guy was very annoying, plans all of his classes to the tee, information not that interesting-way to much work for such a **** class.
Jeff South is an excellent teacher; I wish there were more like him in the MASC School. It is very hard not to pass his class, unless you just don't try at all or don't listen. He's always very clear, always organized, just a great teacher in general. I'd recommend him any day.
Great teacher, very organized and easy to follow! Also extremely hard not to pass his class. Definitely worth it!
Professor South ROCKS! He really gets you involved, and he has a VAST knowledge on ethics, and all sorts of media to show regarding it. Over uses power point a bit... but still ROCKIN awesome. Definitely get him if you can.
his class was one of the easiest classes i ever took. I stopped showing up for class midway, didnt even look at his lectures available online and still got an A. just do his practice exams and do the online discussions and you will get an A.
I don't know why I was always falling asleep. He's very energetic and loves what he does. Lots of good information. Not necessary to suscribe to Wired News (I didn't and got an A.) Everything is available online. He uses lots of questions on his practice tests on Bb. Always do the discussions! Easy points and they will get you the A.

One of the best teachers I've had at VCU. Extremely helpful and you will learn a lot in his class. His tests are easy and straight forward. If you are a Mass Comm major I definitely recommend taking Professor South's classes.
He is one of the few teachers that trys to make class interesting. There are no surprises, he will let you know what you need to do and what you need to know to get an A in his class. He trys to keep all homework relavent to the class and stays away from "busy" work. Definitly take Professor South.
He really enjoys what he teaches and he's very interested in it. He has you do online discussion questions which help you see the different current events from other perspectives and helps you learn more. The tests are pretty easy and you can do well if you just have a pretty good memory and take the practice tests.
I have to agree with the others who said that he's very straight-forward. He's not out to fail anyone, and his tests are based on the lectures; no trick questions. He really cares about what he's teaching. It is easy to fall asleep, not because he's boring though. I think it's the setting. My advice: sit in the front of the class.
one of the easiest classes that you can take at vcu. even learned a few things during class. just makes sure you do the online postings and replys every week...
Jeff is great. His class is really easy and fun. He takes all of the test material from the notes but it doesnt hurt to read the text (the book is really small). His tests are pretty easy and the material is easy to grasp. The only hard part about the class for me was the final which was an essay final. Most of the class ended with a B or an A.
If you're 87 and have never seen a computer then this class is for you. Otherwise, listening to him drone on about technologies that are old news in such a fast evolving technological world is mindnumbingly painful. The class is 2 hours long, and it will go two hours. he loves attendence, sometimes taking it twice because so many people leave.
I love professor south! he's a warm and friendly guy with alot of understanding and patience. His enthusiasm for the material is fun to watch, even though it's not the most entertaining stuff in the world. His class is really chill, he's deff not one of those professors that's out to fail you- like some are...lol
AWESOME PROFESSOR HIGHLY RECCOMEND!
He is great! South is very inteligent and serious for the classes, and yet makes it so easy to understand the material and to enjoy it!
great teacher. follow the notes and discussions, defnit A in the class. gets involved in discuss. gives clear instructions. impossible to get below a B if u just listen and turn in assignments. always smiles and happy. his whole moto in the class is equity, so everyone gets a fair chance. test straight from notes and handouts.
very enthusiastic, smart man. easy to approach for help. encourages lots of discussion, so speak up.
Do your weekly assignments and go to class, and your golden. Easy class, with an enthusistic teacher excited about the material and always available to help if needed. Test directly from notes and also gives plenty of practice tests. Easy B...maybe even an A :)
I hate this teacher, he would not help my grade out by one point to bring my grade to a B so I could get off academic warning, he was a total jerk, and even gave other people in the class 2 points to help raise the grade. I was not a bad student, my test average was a B and he even showed my website to the whole class on the board...
very easy. attend taken each class, 2 tests, 1 midterm, 1 research paper & online disscussions. notes given b4 class in ppt. study questions will get you A on tests, midterm, & exam, paper is garuanteed to get A if you follow his directions (it wasnt that bad, 4 pg min.) online discussions weekly can b a hassle but r 1/4 of final grade SO DO THEM
Really great teacher if you are willing to pay attention to the lectures. i learned alot from him because of his pure passion for the subject. he is very easy to approach for help and very open to any ideas.
One of the easiest classes ever! It will run a full 2 hours, but it is only once a week and as long as you remember to do the online postings- there is no real hw. Reading the book is unnessecary since most of the material is covered in lecture and he gives great notes & tons of practice material =)
I have this class with him teaching part of the time and Marcus Messner teaching the other half, and they're a great, energetic team that make the class interesting and entertaining. The tests were a breeze, the information was useful, and the class is only mandatory due to the joy of CPS. Words of wisdom, however: do the online discussion posts!
They know that we get bored and distracted, especially during once-a-week classes, but South uses video clips, soundbytes, powerpoints and interactive fun quizes to keep you attention. He makes the class fun and talks to students as adults. Grade is two big tests, two quizes, a research paper, and weekly online discussions
easy class.south is very energetic about the material and he wants u to suceed.online discussions will get on ur nerves but thats the price u pay not to have long class time.
South is a good guy. He's extremely interested in the subject he teaches. If you are somewhat familiar with technology, this class will seem boring to you, but then again you will also find out stuff you never knew. The online discussions were key in getting a decent grade. The tests can be a bit tricky because some are true/false questions.
moderate homework, multiple tests, and a research paper, but the class is interesting.
Good teacher, class is interesting. Nice guy, willing to help if you don't understand something. Class is fairly easy, notes are all on PowerPoint. Don't have to read textbook in-depth, but might want to look over it. Keep up with homework - a few essay-type papers, 5 online blogs, 1 very small research paper. Tests not too bad, just study.
He needs to allow the class more time to work independently and spend less time reading exercises/reading things straight from the book and explaining them too much.
Teaches part of the lecture for masc 203 and is not helpful at all. i feel bad for people who have him for the lab, he speaks straight from the book and talks like we are children
Jeff South is the most unhelpful 203 instructor EVER! He goes only by the book and talks to you like your 5. He likes to hear himself talk and never lets you go early. His lectures are useless and he need complete control to get himself off. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Jeff is kinda weird, but cool. Took him for the BS mandatory 203 lecture which in itself is just another way for VCU to suck financial aid from you. He was interesting and comical, I don't think under these conditions he was all that bad. Just take it you have to, who else are you going to take, Bonnie!
South taught my section of 203. I found him very helpful and a fantastic writing coach. He is not terribly interesting to listen to for lecture, but he really does a good job of making sure everyone is on the same page. He'll also bend over backward to help you with pieces you're writing (either for class or not!) and to help you get internships.
South isn't bad. A little dull but he's pretty knowledgable about mass communications and unlike other teachers in the School of Mass Comm he's actually had experience in the field.
Jeff South is taking over the MASS COMM department at VCU. He is so pretentious, and has led to several professors leaving VCU. And he does not have that much experience; all he did was work as a reporter. Statistics for Reporters or whatever was useless. People, he is not all what you make him out to be!!
Mr. South was very helpful throughout the entire 203 process. This course is used to weed people out of the Mass Communications program; with that said you will know if it is for you at the end. He gave great advice and always gave a second chance to get a higher grade on assignments. He enjoys what he does, making the class interesting.
Jeff South is a pretty good teacher. While i can't speak for the upper level ppl here; I can say that the 101 class was interesting (albeit very corny), and he is a fairly easy and well-meaning person. Take his class if you want a high grade with less output than the other classes.
I definitely recommend taking his class! He is so adorable and really enjoys what he is teaching. Attendance isn't MANDATORY but sometimes he gives 2 point pop quizzes and stuff from his lectures appears on quizzes/tests. The class doesn't require a lot of work, just study the powerpoints and take notes during class and study and you will do fine!
South is great. He's really exuberant about his teaching and it makes coming to class fun. The tests are straightforward. He posts practice quizzes online and draws questions from them for the exams. It's a good class. Recommended!
What a great professor... He's super nice and makes class fun. You'll learn a lot and you won't be bored. =)
Jeff South is obviously very interested in the subject and knows his stuff. Online quizzes help reinforce the material. Study the notes and quizzes and you'll get an A on the tests. There is a group project, but it's not that difficult and was actually somewhat fun. If you have to take MASC 101, take South, you won't be disappointed.
He's a great teacher. He loves the subject and educating his students.
Prof. South is a fairly good teacher. You can tell he really enjoys teaching it and always has a smile on his face during lectures. He encourages questions and connects with students on the class Facebook page. The class can be difficult, but overall he's a nice guy and it's an interesting class.
Great Teacher! You can tell how involved he is with the subject. He has a passion for Mass Communications and he is extremely helpful whenever he can be. The class itself is pretty easy too. Take this class!
Prof. South is such a nice guy. He's a very clear, awesome teacher. There are weekly quizzes and discussion questions, make sure you keep up with them. The notes he gives you in lecture are what you need for the quizzes, so try to come to as many classes as you can.
I took as an elective, and would definitely recommend it. Easy A. South is an excellent teacher, he really goes out of his way to help his students and to make sure the information is understood by all. Every Ch has a quiz, but its online/open book. Exams are almost directly from the quizzes. Group project at the end of semester as well.
Had him for mass comm and was probably the best prof ive had yet in my 3 years here so far. He is fantastic. ALWAYS keeps you updated with the class (especially on BB), very friendly, always willing to help, keeps the class fairly easy, and keeps you interested. Do the practice quizes and keep up with notes and youll ace the tests.
Jeff South is the man. Quite possibly my favorite professor so far at VCU.
Literally the best teacher at VCU. He's beautiful and adorable and goofy and super sweet. Everyone should take his class!
Loved Jeff South! Im not a masc major but took it just because I heard so many great things. You don't need to come to class every week. He posts lectures on blackboard but he leaves some answers blank for you to fill in. Tests aren't hard and he reviews. If you need an easy class to take, take this one!!!
Excellent.
Definitely one of the best professors I've had at VCU. He is ALWAYS prepared, loves what he teaches, and is forever willing to help students who have questions or need assistance with their work. Highly recommend taking a class with him, even if it is as an elective. He'll show you what a true professor is supposed to do.
Jeff South is the reason I am a Mass Communications major. He is great.
Great Professor. Knows what he is talking about. It is not an EASY A course, but you defiantly learn alot.He is experienced, and gives re-write opportunities. Received a B in that class, and I am not complaining because I worked for that B.
The perfect professor...register ASAP. He actually enjoys being professor and you can tell. He keeps class interesting and provides you with every single tool you need to get an A.
Best professor at VCU! If you have to take MASC 101, take it with South. He gives lots of quizzes but it all helps your grade. His class is very interesting and he tries hard to make sure it interesting and even entertaining
REALLY nice and helpful. also really clear about deadlines and assignments
Weekly quizzes (open book) and discussion boards. Online lectures posted have ALL the information you need to pass the quizzes. Rarely even need to use the book and I haven't gotten anything lower than an A in the class.Easy A, he gives you every piece of info you need!
I loved his class! He makes mass comm so intersting, His lectures are very clear and fun. He is very helpful. He has to be my favorite professor while being at vcu these past two semesters. His mass comm class is the best!!!!!
Though I didn't have a huge interest in Mass Comm, Jeff South was an incredible teacher. He made a great effort to make himself and his TAs available for help, he was very clear about everything expected in the course, and he made our assignments and course material interesting. He is the definition of an excellent teacher. I would recommend him.
took this course online. pretty easy if you ask me. he's a nice guy. he's very helpful, gives extra credit opportunity (like movie night). Not a strenuous class. He's knows a lot and you can tell he loves teaching this subject. I would take him again if I could. def take him!
You can without a doubt, pass this class with flying colors with little to no effort. I've taken some test on my iphone on my way home from Florida and have maintained an A average. He is super easy, and is always engaged, and clearly loves his job. He's awesome. To be successful watch online, lectures, read textbook, and you'll do fine.
Professor South is great! His lectures are fairly interesting, and his occasional jokes he slips in every now and then are pretty funny.
For a 101 course, there was a lot of work. Overall, he made the online class fairly enjoyable, and I hate online classes. One problem I might note, however, to use a journalistic term, he "parroted" a lot of stuff from the textbook. So, for the most part, the online lectures aren't necessary for success in the class. Not too bad.
After reading rate my prof, I thought that this class would be super easy. However I spent many hours watching the lectures & taking notes each week, and I thought it was hard to get As even on the open notes quizzes. However, I still managed an A in this class. If you're willing to work, you'll get an A. But Prof South is amazing and helpful.
I took this class assuming it was an easy A. However, there was significantly more work than I expected for a 101 course. Each week consisted of viewing online lectures, taking chapter quizzes (sometimes multiple per week), & occasional online discussions. But quizzes and tests were very easy if you did the work, so it was a relatively painless A!
As long as you work hard you will get an A, he is always in his office so if you ever have questions for him just send him an email and he can usually meet with you that afternoon or next day. He is really interested in you as a person and is always excited to hear and give advice for the opportunities you come across.
This class way pretty easy. Basically all you do is read and take quizzes. Jeff is a pretty good professor, responded to e-mails quickly. The final is the only reason why I didn't get an A in the class. Be prepared for it. Other than that this class is awesome, I learned a lot!
This class was very easy and he's an amazing professor! He's very helpful and responds quick whenever you e-mail him. The book is necessary! As long as you highlight notes in the book, and watch his online lectures. You'll pass with an A. The questions come straight from the booklectures. Be prepared for the midterm & final because they're LONG.
I love Professor South. He is a great teacher and really funny and passionate. As long as you read the textbook and watch his lectures online you will do good in the class. He's always there to help and always gives good writing or journalism career advice. Definitely take him!
I took this class online and it was super easy. You really don't need a text because all the quizzes are open book (I google everything) You take a survey at the beginning of the semester. He uses this to decide how the class should be graded and how much work to give. Really fun teacher you can only fail if you forget about it.
Jeff South is a great professor! He is a pretty lenient grader and replies fast to emails if you have questions or concerns. Tests are easy if you study. Online quizzes every week, but they are also fairly easy. Only thing that is tedious are the online discussion questions.
Such an excellent professor. This was my first online class, so I was apprehensive, but he helped make it seamless. He clearly indicates what he expects of you, and the course is well-rounded enough that you should be able to do well no matter what your strengths/weaknesses are. Highly recommend!
South is super passionate about what he's teaching. His online lecture's aren't too long, usually around 20-30 minutes. His lectures cover whats in the textbook for the most part, so you can get by on just the lectures. There's a chapter quiz every Sunday, and every couple weeks you have to submit a response to a class discussion. Very easy grader.
I had him online and it was an easy class. Just stay on top of the syllabus and turn stuff in on time. Easy grader. Easy class. A lot of work but the work is simple, literally just do it and you will be fine. I bought the textbook, and never used it btw...
Not hard just kind of annoying to keep up with, but South is really cool and clear about assignments.
I had my doubts about taking an online course, but I actually enjoyed it. The (sorta long) lectures covered the info from the textbook, so I didn't even need the book. South is nice, helpful, & sends out gifs with his email reminders. Do the work: 10 question quizzes every week, 3 tests, a few group discussions, + a media project easy A.
I took Professor South online, and his class was a breeze as long as you put in effort. He gives a quiz a week as well as videos and notes to go along, you also can use the text book (i never did and it was still easy) and you also have one project, but you choose from 5 different topics which is amazing and gives you the option on when to do it!
Jeff is AWESOME. He sends out emails reminding you about the assignments due for the upcoming week, and sends out cute gifs along with it. He's always available for his students and makes his expectations clear. I am not a Mass Comm major but I thoroughly enjoyed his class. Take him!!!!
Professor Jeff is amazing in the way that he cares for his students and what he is teaching. He very knowledgable about the subject and you can learn a lot from his class. However, he also expects a lot from you. Those expectation comes with quizzes, discussion essays, tests and project. Don't expect easy A.
You should be more than grateful to receive this guy as your Professor for MASC101. He cares about his students' grades, and he's a very interactive professor. It took me a while to get a hang of his assignment due date schedules, but after I came into his office hours ONCE, I was on track. It's very easy to pass his class. Just do your work. Easy.
I took Masc 101 with a different prof, and was failing to understand anything. I stopped going to my class and started watching Dr. South's videos instead. I would not have passed without his help. His video are super excellent and he makes everything really clear! I wish I took his class instead!
CNS is a capstone course. Stay on top of your work and be ready to learn. Any class with Jeff South is an experience and he is a well respected man-- he knows what he's doing! Ask questions and get ready for the experience of your lifetime. This course does work on tight deadlines, so you must work for EVERYTHING you do.
Took the Capital News Service class with Jeff. Jeff knows what hes doing in his field and gives his students ample opportunity to succeed. The only issue that I believe that he has is with students who work full time or have a busy course load. He isnt very understanding sometimes and his numerous emails will stress you completely out. Good luck.
I've taken only one other online class and this one was the best by far. Professor South is aware of what goes in running an online course so he makes sure he has as MULTIPLE ways to get crucial announcements and info to you. If you watch the lectures, turn in assignments, and participate in the easiest of group work, you'll be fine.
Good dude. Lots of quizzes, lots of projects, relatively easy class. Would recommend!
