Super nice prof! There are quite a few readings for this course (2-3 per class) and weekly summaries for those readings followed by group, then class discussions on them. My advise would be to take detailed notes of the class discussion (having a laptop helps), especially of what Sugarman says about each article, this will help a lot for the papers

Jeff's lectures are interesting and his exams are all multiple choice. You need to know the textbook and readings to do well. The format of his first paper was a bit confusing, but still very easy course with a good TA. Good idea to take notes in class as the slides that he posts are very brief.

Lectures were packed with information but enjoyable, Dr. Sugarman is great at engaging the class even in a large lecture setting. Textbook reading is a necessity, the midterm and final are solely multiple choice and you will not pass with only attending lectures. The tests are daunting, worth a lot with not a lot of questions so be sure to review.

Not a VERY interesting course, loaded with concepts. We are expected to memorize nearly everything in the textbook. The course is very heavy!! Thought the prof wants to be funny with his jokes, but apparently not seem funny to me. Overall, need to work hard to get an A.

By far the best course I've taken at SFU with the best prof. This course dismantled so many of my beliefs and made me question my understanding of the world. Sugarman is so well researched, intelligent, and passionate about what he teaches. Not an easy course, but so well worth it. Really makes you question 'common sense' policies in education.

I learned a lot and the subject is very interesting. But he is a tough grader and is not very good at explaining assignments (format, style). The questions for the assignments are very general and he does not elaborate. His feedback is one sided , gives only harsh criticism so you do not know what to focus on for next time. But he knows his stuff.

This professor is definitely the worst professor I've had in my five years at SFU. If you don't follow his idea and collaborative logic to complete the assignment, you will get very severe criticism and a lower grade than you can imagine! His criticism is a personal attack that directly attacks your thoughts, writing, and behavior and can be extrem

Great prof. You need to complete the readings before class and attend lectures. His class definitely has changed my perspective on a lot of the things in Education and the material is really interesting, you can tell he is passionate about this course. The assignments not that bad, if you go to class and listen and take notes, assignments are easy

Sugarman is a very specific prof who knows his content and expects students' to put in the work to do well. However, he is extremely fair and recognizes effort. Make sure to acknowledge and apply his feedback and it is possible to ace the class!! Readings and attendance are crucial as Sugarman clarifies and explains the content. I Recommend!

Sugarman has very clear expectations for what he wants in his papers. In order to do well, you must read every reading and take notes of EVERYTHING he says in the lectures. If you miss a lecture and don't get the notes from someone else you won't pass. If you apply his feedback and cite his arguments in your papers, you will do well.

I didnt think he would be such a TOUGH grader. He doesnt provide much context for the questions he assigns, and if you ask for help, he doesnt clarify further & makes you feel stupid for even asking. Hes passionate about what he teaches, and his criticism on the assignments were harsh which made me second guess my writing for every assignment

One of the best education courses Ive taken at SFU!! Although some of the concepts are complex, Sugarman explains the course ideas very well and his lectures are super helpful. I recommend taking detailed notes of his lectures, which will be very helpful for writing papers. Also, there are many group and class discussions, which I really enjoyed!

If there is one review you take to heart, let it be this one. Never, never have I felt so confused and dissatisfied with an SFU education course. Sugarman refuses to give detailed criteria and structures the essays around vague prompts. I approached him for help and gained nothing. The mixed reviews on his page speak to how volatile his grading is.

EDUC 327 is definitely the hardest education course I have ever taken at SFU. While the course itself is interesting and it widened my perspective, I would never take a course with Jeff again. Sugarman has a specific grading/rubric that he doesnt share with the class. I did not know what he was looking for, which made the course difficult.

Best class Ive taken. Sugarman is a great teacher. But you need to do the readings before class and be prepared to discuss them, and you need to listen to his explanations. His expectations are clear and hes very approachable. But this is not a typical easy A education course. Its more like a psych course.

Jeff is a great teacher, but he has high expectations. It feels like a genuine accomplishment when you get praise from him. He's passionate about education and it shows in both the material and in how he teaches. Critical engagement with the material is a must -- he doesn't want you to regurgitate ideas, he wants you to think.

The course is interesting, every lesson expands your mind. But the prof is harsh, does not have empathy and has a weird grading rubric, you never know what exactly is needed, because the topics are very general. Also, when he gives comments they sometimes are personal rather than only about the work.

Don't take a class with Jeff unless you absolutely have to. He's a good speaker, but he's unapproachable and harsh both in his marking style and during class. There is way too much reading for a 3rd year course. For a prof in the EDUC faculty, he should know better. I'm a good student, honour roll -- this class lowered my GPA significantly.

I don't recommend this class if it's not required/if you're a slow reader like I am. 3 readings/week ~13-20+ pages each. You'll do well if you write detailed notes of what he says in lecture. Doesn't provide a rubric and gives negative feedback (sometimes personal) but it's because he has very HIGH expectations and wants students to succeed.

Jeff made every lecture pretty engaging and fun to listen to. I think it is important to be present for each class, because I think you won't get the full experience of the class otherwise! He is a hard marker tho but he gives a lotta feedback for your assignments. Overall a worthwhile class to take!

Reflecing back on my time as an undergad, Sugarman was possibly the best professor I've ever had. Do you listen to someone speak and are just in awe of how bright they are?
