A very unique professor to say the least... Highly organized and articulate; he may put you to sleep in the 8 am class though. May depreciate students who ask the truly dumb questions (you know the kind), or use improper lab technique. Walker has an ext
Very organized, but very unhelpful in office hours
You either love Walker or you hate him, it's that simple. Some say he's the best, others say he is the worst.
He's a robot

JR is a mixture of a technical chem article, and the driest humor of a BBC news anchor. I've never seen any other professor go back five pages of notes to cross a t . No tricks on the tests -- cut and dry. Crazy Canadian Accent.
The review below couldn't have said it better
I tried to go by his office hours several times and his door was locked and he was not there. He didn't return emails and when I asked him questions in class he was very unhelpful.

Dr. Walker gives very clear lectures most of the time, and he answers questions during or after class. Doesn't respond to email though. He's quite funny too, though not all the time. His tests are fair.
Very Anal! Everything is laid out for you so there is absolutely no guessing. Can be slightly arrogant and put off by some questions. For the most part a great person to learn from due to his over the top prepatory work.
good lectures & grading; i don't think he digs girls. a female friend of mine came to his office & asked some o chm questions; instead of looking at her while answering the questions, he always looked down & a bit grumpy. cool guy though!
Jeff is 'da bomb. Best science prof I've ever had. Snappy dresser too. Good handouts, class notes, fair exams.
awesome professor. way hot too. his tests are very clear, to the point, no tricks. he is very clear, lectures are easy to understand. super nice guy and tells the nerdiest jokes!
Talked very fast through lecture and NEVER, EVER responds to emails. Tests I personally found to be hard, but I'm not a chemistry whiz. Quizzes are a good way to work together with other students and earn some easy points.
Very organized. Exams are extremely diffucult. Doesn't like females! Holds review sessions before exams. Do the quizzes, they are the easiest points to get in the class! I would recommend taking O-chem from Walker.
Organized! Only likes students who do well (I did well on one test and he remembered my name and would chit chat..then i did bad and he 'forgot' my name and would avoide answering any questions.)
Very well organized, and very well prepared for lecture. Cracks jokes, but hard to approach on an individual basis. Seems a little spacy when I try to ask him a question during lab.
A Chemistry Machine! I wether you like him or not you cant deny the fact he is organized like no other. Its like he practices his lectures at home!
Hey, this fellow really, really knows his stuff and has a sense of humour to boot, eh?
Best Chem. prof. voice ever. Great sense of humor, and he generally brings a stereo to class with him everyday to play classical music as students are ariving.
he is very interesting (and attractive) teacher. He's a very organized guy. BEWARE the quizes are not as easy as they sound... Do the suggested problems or you will be in a world of hurt. He tends to give exam questions that are very different from the examples in the lecture notes
I had Dr. Walker the first year that he came to Oregon State and he didn't have prepared notes and he definetly had issues when it came to female students. If you went up to his office during office hours and you were a female he would make you stand just inside the front door. :(
He's a good teacher...exams are hard but if you study with other people you should do fine.
He knows his stuff and he is very organized, I'll give him that. However, I think teaching is also about connecting with the students and making class interesting. He was hard to approach and lectures were very boring.
My favorite prof in the sciences! He tells you exactly what you should know for exams and his notes really help you understand the mechanisms. And he's really nice in lab, too. Plus he's cute!
Super organized, so fun in lab. Hotie canadian
sometimes he doesn't talk clearly. can lose students quickly then you just wan't to sleep
Didn't have him for 331 or 332, I find him very hard to understand... Mumbles his way through lecture. Very intellegent, but that doesn't mean much if you can't do your job and teach others. Nice guy though.
Brilliant prof, who was incredibly organized. Tests were very very hard, but you knew what to expect overall.
He's very well organized and seems to put a lot of effort into teaching. He gives lots of examples and is very clear as to what will be on exams.
I recommend taking O-chem from Dr. Walker. He is extremely clear when presenting information. Although he may put you to sleep, he was the best o-chem teacher I had. I also recommend a tutor. Good luck :)
Are you finished scribing?????
Extremely organized, covers a lot of material thoroughly and effectively. Can be a bit hard to understand voice at times. Tests difficult but mostly over material covered (a couple I'd never seen before). Grading fair. Intimidating to approach but willing to help out when you do.

Dress shirt, tie with Tommy Hilfiger jeans! Leisure, equilibrium in his Canadian accent. Love it. Good prof--the organization and structure of his classes and lab were great the year I took it, but I have heard he has experimented some.

And I quote: "Is anyone still scribing here?"
GREAT teacher. I really liked how is class is structured and organized. He is also very caring in that he does provide many opportunities to get help (i.e. giving many study sessions). great teacher, great class...
wonderful wonderful man...all his tests are extremely fair...if you do bad, its cuz of ur own stupidity...so organized its kind of frightening..."is anyone still scribing?"

He is the most organized teacher you will ever come across. The material in this class can be challenges but he gives lots of examples and holds many review sessions before exams. The tests can be tough but is over what happened in class. The grading is extremely fair. Recommend this teacher!!!!!
He's the most organized teacher ever! His test questions are real straight forward and he grades very fairly. And he'll do anything to help his students understand o-chem, even if it means more work for him.
Horrible teacher!!!
Excellent teacher, loves his stereochemistry. Most organized teacher you will come across. Lots of examples and review sessions. Truly wants you to learn the material. Tests are straight forward and reflect examples from class and book questions. He is great teacher and looking forward to having him next term for 332.
Didn't really like the way he explained some things, if you have a question, ask your friends, if you ask him, you get even more confused. Other than that, nice guy, very smart, if you know your stuff, you will get an A. DON'T GET BEHIND. If you do, you're screwed. So, keep up and be sure you understand it well!
A MOST EXCELLENT PROF. Exams are fair, very organized and clearly explained lectures. He even gives some bonus points. His grading system is also great (he makes it so you can easily get the grade you want if you put in the effort). Only downside: not so approachable, and when you ask him a question he usually says "refer to your notes".
Very organized teacher. He explains everything well and gives lots of examples. Tests were very straightforward and fair. Be sure to study the old tests he provides, they will help a lot. Would definitely take a class from him again.
The worst at teaching OCHEM! Won't help you with anything because he can't communicate with people. He is very smart but almost too smart to talk to students and help them out. Lecture notes are very organized but you just fill in the blank so you don't learn anything. you only learn bits and pieces cuz you dont have to do it all, until the test!
Very organized, thorough and fair. A great teacher to learn from. He's really smart and may have a hard time understanding questions you ask but for an organic chemistry teacher he's pretty down to earth and has a lot of care for his students.
Very well organized. Tests are totally fair, nothing comes out of the blue. Material is not easy not matter who is teaching it, but I would recommend Walker for your best chance at an A.
The textbook is my only teacher
The person who said that he is the worst person to take Ochem from is completely wrong. He is exactly what an Ochem teacher needs to be- organized and clear. Its almost inhuman the lengths he will go to for learning efficiency. Awesome professor and I get to take 337 with him too-yeah.
I agree--no other teacher is so robotically efficient, organized, and concise. Though not entirely entertaining of a combo, perfect for the subject matter. Just know the quizzes/review sheets, and you can get an A, though it you must have those down GOOD. Recitations are completely useless--only went once.
AWFUL, GOOD LUCK!
I was very pleased with Dr. Walker. Although his lectures were a little boring, his explanation and depth of the subject matter was excellent. His tests were very reasonable and straightforward, no tricky questions. I would highly recommend Dr. Walker. Also, his grading scale is amazing, 87% is a legit A!
He's very organized and knows his materials. As long as you go to class and study his notes along with objectives, you are guranteed to get an A.
Walker is a great professor. Basically, you don't even need to open the book. He tells you everything you need to know for the tests. The way he grades tests makes it very easy to do very well. Although the subject matter is slightly confusing sometimes, he will pull you through it. AWESOME PROFESSOR. Don't take O. Chem. from anyone else!
Walker is a great prof. You purchase his notes in the bookstore and he goes over them in class. He's very organized and clear. Takes a while to get used to (his voice is rather soft), but after that, he makes the subject interesting and is, at times, very entertaining. 332 is difficult, but 337 is actually pretty easy as long as you can get in.
Very hot, very clear, very stylish.
Great professor, dresses ver NEAT, at times funny (=......however, when he cracks jokes, he never laughs.
Doc Walk rocks... enough said. Wouldn't take OChem from anyone else.
He was an okay teacher to me. After I had to retake 332 from Drapela this summer, I like Drapela's teaching WAY better. Walker is an okay guy. Liked him for 331 & 337, 332 was quite difficult with the 50+ mechanisms we had to memorize for the final.
Definately better than Travers in terms of organization. However, he is harder to talk to and gets easily irritated if you ask him too many questions. He rarely smiles and is extremely serious. Travers is more confusing, but easy to talk to. Walker is the opposite way around. If I had to pick, I'd still choose Walker, but that's not saying much.
OMG. He's like a Chemistry Robot. He's extremely, EXTREMELY efficient and organized. Probably too organized, but he's okay. I like his organization, but not his explanation or advanced thinking too much. He seems too robotic for my tastes.
Very organized. Printed notes very helpful for lectures. Tests are tough for some but grading 4 out of 5 helps. Pay attention to practice problems and tests and ask questions!
The material itself is pretty hard. Afterall, it's Organic Chemistry. But Dr. Walker is pretty good at efficiency and printed notes. It REALLY does help (compared to Travers' way) learning Ochem. His grades are also good cutoffs and if you study his notes/explanations, you will do fine. The book is sort of useless, though. Good prof, however.
Do NOT take Organic Chem from ANYONE else. Walker is the man. Anyone else is obselete. A GOOD Ochem teacher needs to be: concise, clear, organized, efficient, and lenient at grading. Walker has all these qualities. Organic Chemistry is a very difficult subject, but Walker makes it straight forward. However, the book is useless it seems.
Walker is incredibly efficient and organized. This is probably one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken in terms of the material but he makes it very easy to learn. The guy is professional and respectful to students. His tests are challenging but definitely do-able if you take the time to thoroughly understand the lectures.
OMG I want to marry Dr. Walker. Number one he is really hot and number two he is so awesome at chemistry that it's not even funny. When I had him for lab I tried not to stare too much but how could anyone resist?
really good lecture notes and the practice tests help a ton when studying for midterms. tests are fair, but still challenging. hes also really attractive so that makes attending lecture pretty beneficial.
I love Dr. Walker!!! His tests are fairly straight forward and his notes are freakishly organized! I think he's hilarious...especially when he cracks a little smile :) Dr. Walker just makes me happy!
Everything is laid out clearly. Very organized.

He is a hottie. But, I hate how he removes everything from blackboard before the test so procrastinators cannot study.
Very organized and professional. Make sure to do well on the quizzes as they help your grade when the midterms are hard. Always do the practice problems as they are frequently on tests!
I think he might actually be a robot. Completely monotone, frighteningly organized (in a bad way), talks quietly and doesn't explain things. Exam "study guides" are 2 pages long and may as well say "be a chemistry genius." I'm an honors student and I struggled all term to pass. I very much dislike him... take it from Drapela.
Walker is VERY organized and this is a good thing, yet also a bad thing. Many people learn by organizing the information and it is already in walkers language which sometimes does not get explained. Most of the work is done outside of the lecture. Walker doesn't say how to approach the information though. I found it helpful to treat it like a math
Oh me oh my he is SO hot!! hot hot hottt!! His voice sounds like the radio djs on the classical music and jazz stations. He is so smart and his jokes are so adorable!!! I wish I could take OChem all over again so I could have had him for both terms!!! I love him!!
Dr Walker has very hard tests but if you do the practice questions and the hw you will do fine
He is a great prof! I think the comments about him not liking women are possibly he is intimidated by them or does not know how to react to them. He is Canadian and may not know how to relate to a different environment. And maybe he is too busy studying to read and reply to ALL his email. Those are my thoughts. Overall he is a good prof.
Excellent OChem professor. Crystal clear although he can go a little fast at times, but will slow down if you ask him. Tests are easy, no tricks. I took OChem at another university and it is substantially easier here at OSU with Doc Walker. I do find that he struggles to relate to women though. Soothing voice that will put you in a trance, as if
He is a very good teacher, love the way his class is organized. He is also very helpful when you need it. And has anyone else noticed he kind of looks like 'Finch' from American Pie?
I loved him. He was funny and helpful. The class was hard and took a lot of time, but he helped and was really organized. When I first started the class I was very wary of him. An acquired taste
Worst ochem teacher!! all he did was speak in a monotone voice at 8am! he taught directly from the book and when you asked him to clarify he would just repeat the exact same thing. horrible
Funniest man on campus! Lectures are sometimes slow and he definitely gives you enough time to finish "scribing" your notes. Always helpful during office hours. Great Prof!
Very detail oriented and precise. His notes that he makes for you are so helpful. His tests are hard but doable if you keep up with studying the lecture notes. I highly recommend this professor!
I recommend this professor to other students, not only for his excellently organized class and perfect syllabus, but because he's very fair and decent.
I'd say he's more of a dentist that puts you under anaesthesia only for you to wake up finding both him and his assistant putting their clothes back on. Thats an exaggeration though, he's a great prof. with a very professional attitude.
Although Dr. Walker is very organized he is terrible at explaining organic chemistry. He gives you a bunch of little pieces to the puzzle but never tells you how they fit together. When I went to his office for help a few times he never made eye contact, made me feel unimportant. Don't be fooled by what others have written he's not a verygood prof
Dr. Walker is a great O-Chem teacher. The high level of organization makes the information logical and easily studied. Sometimes his explanations makes things seem harder than they actually are, just don't be intimidated. The easy grading system makes it virtually impossible not to receive an A.
Very organized, very complete, sometimes repetitive and monotonus. If you understand some basic concepts, its easy to apply them to almost all parts of the class. Study the practice sheets and the first two pages of each chapters notes, generous curve. Book unnecessary. Walker teaches more efficiently and makes studying easier; Drapela is more fu
Straight forward and thorough in his explanations of chemical reactions and governing processes. Widely available office hours!

Dr. Walker is the da bomb! I would take every class from him if I could. I easily get >95% on every test but still learn tons! It doesn't hurt that he is cute too!
da bomb diggity bomb...an awesome teacher
Really good teacher....hardest tests ever tho
He has taught 331, 332, and 337 for so many years (those are the only ones he teaches) that it's like he goes through stuff in a stiff, regimented, calculated way. He is way, way, way too uptight and needs to chill out. The format of his tests and lecture notes is insane. Take 331/332 with someone else, or read the book and teach yourself Ochem.
Learned a lot. Great prof.
walker is extremely organized and helpful if you ask. sure, he's a bit awkward, but it's in a completely endearing way...it's actually pretty hot. tests aren't hard at all if you study just a bit. seriously, in order to pass with an A all you have to do is go to lecture and listen...never even bought the book.
Horrible! Socially challenged! Simply states the facts! Isn't able to teach worth a damn! Avoid at all cost!
If possible, avoid Walker at all costs. He's perhaps one of the worst teachers I've had. Stiff, boring, and completely unhelpful. I do recommend going to lectures/recitation, unless you think you can manage by teaching yourself out of the book.
Nice guy, hit or miss teacher. His classes will either be really easy or the bane of your existence. If your in the latter category (like me) do yourself a favor and read the textbook- it's more interesting and useful than he'll ever be.
He's a good professor, but dry lectures, and this term he didn't give ANY partial credit on exams. Intimidating to talk to, and when I did he was rather rude! Would not talk to him in office hrs ever again. Incredibly organized, but monotone. Humorless. Go for Dr. Myles if possible!!!
I really enjoyed Dr Walker's teaching style. He is straight forward and super organized. His tests are never a surprise. The quizzes and supplementary problems are what really prepared me for the tests. Never opened the book and wish I hadn't bought it. Model kit was useless. Got through the class just fine without it.
Walker is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He clearly explains things and is very well organized. Many people take offense to Walker because they do not understand that learning o-chem is like learning a foreign language; it takes a lot of practice outside of class to fully internalize it. Walker really cares about teaching you.
Ochem can be really easy if you know how you learn it. I found it most helpful to write down the learning objectives separately. I wrote down the general reactions and a simplified mechanism than the one presented in class. It also helps to keep an index of all the general reactions that the course covers.
Dr. Walker is very articulate. As long as you review the material well after class, you'll do just fine. His tests are difficult, yet reasonable. The class was challenging, but he is always available and very helpful during office hours.
Did not enjoy this class nearly as much as 331 with Dr. Myles. Got a B+ by just cramming before finals, but remember almost none of the material now.
He was a good teacher, but sometimes a little hard to understand.
Walk's a great professor. By going to his classes, you can tell that he loves teaching Ochem. He's very helpful as well.
Probably the most organized professor I've ever had! He's really smart and I love how he actually attended laboratory and talked to us and showed us how to do things in person. This was one of my favorite classes ever actually. The lab was really fun and actually applied to the things we learned in lecture. Great class!
Dr. Walker is a great teacher and puts a lot of time into teaching this class. He was there at every lab to do an introduction and stayed to help the entire time in addition to having office hours during the week. The lecture notes were very organized. The exams were not that difficult if you kept up on studying.
Walker is a boss. I honestly did not put all I could into this class and still got B+. He is without a doubt the most straight-forward professor I've ever had. His lectures define explicitly what he expects on midterm exams and such. Sometimes his mechanisms are hard to follow but if you ask for clarification he always tries to explain it in such
Dr. Walker is, hands down, my favorite professor at OSU. He makes ochem seem like basket weaving because he puts so much effort into crafting amazing lectures. Handsome and smart = best kind of chemistry prof
Dr Walker is definitely a lab guy - the reason lecture is in the evening is because he attends all labs. He gives you a lot of resources in the way of past midterms etc. However, I never felt like I understood things even though I got an A in the class. Mechanisms come down to memorization. Good teacher, but should explain concepts more.
One of the best teachers I've had at Oregon State. Provides very clear lecture note outlines where if you show up to class on a consistent basis the amount of reading you need to do outside of class is minimal. Has a built in curve where 83% is an A- and gives multiple old exams to practice on before midterms. Overall great teacher.
Dr. Walker is the best teacher I ever had at OSU. His class was tough, but he made it possible and worked with me to help me learn the info., I really enjoyed organic chemistry because of him. Now only if OSU could clone him and have him teach every science class. He really cares about the students.
Walker is a great teacher. He provides the note outlines for you - a definite plus as OChem is all about mechanisms, and without them you would feel like you are in an art class. He is clear about what you need to know on the tests, and is extremely fair. Plus, he is super funny in a cheese ball manner, just pay attention and you will see!
His notes are not clear at all and I feel the class needs to focus more on the important subjects of Organic Chemistry. He is awesome in Labs, but lecture is not his thing. Having all your notes all over the place, is totally not very organized. You would get a good grade if you have a group of 12, doing out the online stuff.Unfair for others.
The class was very disorganized and he confused himself alot. Not good at lecture but good at lab. He barely explains mechanisms and wants you to just memorize EVERYTHING! He also doesn't respond to emails. I still got an A in the class but I would just recommend doing ALL the practice problems and practice exams to pass the course.
Amazing teacher! Very helpful. Spend the time to do ALL the practice problems he assigns and the ones in the book. His tests are just like the practice problems so DO THEM! Attend class and ask for help when you need it. Lab was a breeze!
Took eCampus version and felt like I was just teaching myself organic chemistry using the book. No lectures, handouts were more confusing to me than the book, and he has such a strict SOP about asking any questions that I felt I couldn't. Sounds like he is good in person, so I would advise not taking the course online.
hes the profressor i ever had at OSU, he's gives extra credit on exams (which myles and draplea dont even do), has easy assignment though sometime a little tricky, and top of that is he really HOT!!
Great teacher! You may feel like you dont know what is going on, but as long as you attend lecture and do the optional problem sets you will pass this class with a B or better. Pre-curves the class so a 78% is a B and if the class does poorly, will curve again after the final! You may get an average busting test(just to make u work harder on final)
Worst professor I have ever had! He is not helpful. People ask him questions, but he just tells them to refer back to the text. He doesn't explain things clear either. His voice can rock me to sleep! I had Dr. Carter last term, and he was awesome!
Has the awesomest voice ever.
Incredibly difficult to follow. His voice lulls you to sleep and he uses vocabulary that makes lectures more difficult to understand. I was dependent on my tutor, which I payed a fortune for. He teaches really hard examples and you have to figure simple examples out for yourself. A lot of out of class time is expected.
Very difficult to follow. His voice is grading and 5 minutes in your either asleep, completely lost, or just really annoyed. If possible, take Myles - much easier to follow.
Its OChem... It's supposed to be challenging. He provides you an entire binder's work of lecture notes to aid with your lectures and studying. He also is the only instructor for 337 and the OChem lab, therefore you should get used to him prior to that. Definitely challenging, but if you pay attention you will do good. Cannot miss class.
The class was very straight forward but I don't like the method he teaches the course. I would rather generalize concepts so I knew how to solve any type of problem. Instead we had to refer to our packets. So if you want to get an A its easy but if you want to gain anything read the book.
Very organized. Taught non-chem major students, so he realized we all just needed to pass and move on. Does not respond to e-mails. Give every chance to get decent grade. Random jokes made me smile. Demands respect from students by not talking during lectures. And honors the military for both Veteran's day and Memorial day. This man is a Robot!
He is hands down the worst professor I have had at OSU. He is incredibly boring and lectures in a monotone. He refuses to respond to emails and cannot clarify concepts when asked. Seems unable to relate the world outside of analytical organic chemistry.
Has excellent understanding of the base material, but interest lies in lab research, so lectures may be lacking in excitement from the professor. Professor is extremely organized.
Horrible clarity of course outcomes, moves and talks like a robot, shows little to no interest in the student's understanding of the material, absolutely useless lecture notes and study guides, homework is impossible to do without outside help, overall boring and poor teacher.
Undoubtedly the worst professor I have had. Useless lectures, useless "Study's." He makes the easiest concepts hard by providing no concepts or background into what we're doing. Anyone else find success by being dropped headfirst into an organic chemistry problem? Don't bother emailing him, doesn't reply. Learned the whole class out of a book.
Dr. Walker is a good professor. You will need to use the book to clarify some things but it's O-Chem, of course the material wont make sense the first time it is presented in lecture. You have to put in the time, but his exams have no surprises and he's very fair in grading. Go to lecture, do the book problems, study for the exams and youll be good
His notes are very organized and helpful. He also knows the materials very well which is very important.
Very organized and straightforward with the most monotone, boring voice you'll ever listen to. Walker is the easiest organic chemistry teacher you will have, but do whatever you can to take it from Myles.
He's a great teacher that gives you a lot of resources! Make sure you turn in assignments on time, late work will not be accepted (kind of a hardass about it). Any help you need will be given with patience and understanding.
Lectures had clear outlines with fill in the blank questions. Had practice problems, but did not go over them in class. Demonstrated and explained things in lab very well. Not as good of a lecturer as Dr. Myles, but still very willing to help and clarify things.
Lectures were interesting and easy to follow, learning goals and expectations were clear, and Dr. Walker was helpful and approachable. His great instructions made lab a comfortable learning environment, even for those of us with minimal previous experience. He is easily one of the best teachers I had at OSU.
I found his lectures boring so I actually didn't attend the lectures most of the time. I taught myself from the book. The best thing about Walker is he provides practice questions for every exam and the exams are the same. Great professor overall !If you are good at teaching yourself take with him if not I don't recommend.
Well, I must say Walker is the worst professor I ever have had in this university. Useless lectures and he always makes the easiest concepts hard by providing no concepts or background into what we're doing. He also provide the useless study guides and the ridiculous final exams!! Never reply your mails and learned the whole class out of a book.
His lectures are hard to pay attention in because his voice is rather mono tone. However his notes are very useful if you fill them out from his lecture and later read that section in the book to understand the full concept. He will make you think critically. intensifies concepts. However READ THE BOOK and fill out the notes.
This is sucha great and helpful teacher. Many students said that he teaches unclearly. However, I felt all the way around. You only need to prepare from the exam guide for the exam and I believe you can boost your grade. His quizzes are sometimes tricky but doable! He also give extra credits! He is really helpful and sincere teacher
Dr. Walker is the definition of a boring professor. He really doesn't know how to say things in a clear way- his lectures are like listening to a research paper on audio tape. Don't bother talking to him after class, as he couldn't care less about your success and answers questions by creating questions. Tests are easy, study the practice exams.
Dr. Walker was great in my opinion. I always liked the way he was able to articulate a problem. Some people don't like his monotone voice, but he was a great instructor none the less!
I agree his lectures can seem monotonous but he's very clear with the material. Pay attention in lectures (don't skip) and make sure you have the unit notes to follow along with. The quizzes give you an idea of what's on the tests. Also, make sure you review the additional problems he gives. They're VERY similar to exam ones.
I took CHEM 331 online with Dr. Walker, he response to emails quickly, but doesn't answer your questions right away, if you're stuck on a problem you have to wait 2 days to get the answer. BIG TIME EXTRA CREDIT, he curves grade. If you do the practice exam questions really well, you'll do well on the exams. Class average was B minus
Dr. Walker gives out fantastic notes and is highly organized. Content is tough, and his lectures are a bit monotone, but he's good. Since his notes are so detailed, even if you don't understand it during lecture, when you're doing problems the notes explain everything perfectly. He gives very clear practice exams and doesn't surprise you on tests.
You either love him or you hate him. He's a pretty average instructor. If you aren't learning OChem from his lectures, get a tutor who will help you through it. He's pretty straightforward about what you need to learn and the tests reflect that. As he says in class, "Some students do well, some don't."
Terrible notes, difficult quizzes that he expects you to assume information he didn't clearly say, but easy tests. Lots of extra credit.
Learning Modules are essential to doing well on his exams. He is very clear in what he expects but make sure to understand that you will be essentially teaching yourself via the textbook if taking the online class. Some examples of concepts in his study guide do not accurately reflect the difficulty of problems on his exams. Overall great, AVG B-
Such a boring and impersonal professor. I know he wants his students to succeed, but I did not learn or take away anything from his lectures. Granted, the subject he teaches is difficult (and boring, I think), but I ended up teaching myself everything I needed to know for the course, and just memorizing problems on the study guide for tests.
Walker teaches this class pretty well. He can be boring sometimes, but the examples and notes he provides are useful. He uploads his lectures to canvas so you can watch them when you want if you are unable to make it to lecture sometime. Extra credit is available on all of his quizzes (1pt each). Am planning to take him again for CH332.
Walker is extremely clear in his expectations- will never try to trick you. If you do his practice problems and take his practice exams you will be very well prepared for exams. Makes himself very accessible for additional help outside of class. Biggest downfall for me is not showing all mechanisms in reactions but you can get that in recitation.
I did good in this class by memorizing the practice exams. The exams were almost identical to the practice exams. I was never challenged and did not gain a deep understanding of organic chemistry. Students who are afraid to be challenged naturally gravitate to his classes.
Good professor overall, and there's a ton of material to cover and he does it well. He records and uploads his lectures online so if you miss lecture or need to review it, you have that options. Tests are not multiple choice so you need to really understand the material, but his notes and study guides are great.
The weekly quizzes are rough, but the final and midterm stick closely to the practice exams. He gave a breakdown of the # of questions per chapter on exams; helped target which parts to really study. Lectures videos are complex. I had to watch them 2-3 times to get the concepts. The assigned textbook homework wasn't helpful for quizzes and exams.
Lecture is a slog but very straight forward on what he expects you to know. Lavish attention on practice exams as test is a direct sample with values changed. Tends to dwell on connections to past learned material then rush through the new stuff, so, the recorded lecture came in handy. The book is a bust. Challenged? Meh. Stress free? Mostly.
One of the best chemistry professors anywhere! (And I've been to 5 schools so far). He's very accessible outside of class (via email for me, I was Ecampus, out of state). I was pretty terrible at ochem at first, but I still managed a B in his class. His lectures are dry but that's ochem for you. His quizzes were pretty fair, I thought.
Walker is a very easy teacher. He is slow in lectures, which makes it easy to follow, but very boring. You can skip lectures because he posts videos of the week's lectures on Friday. I never used the book once, didn't even open it. Do not buy it. There are multiple different places to get extra credit, and he drops the cutoffs for each grade by 3%.
Clutches teacher ever. Never showed up to class and got an A on his midterm. He posts his lectures so you don't have to show up. His test is hella easy cause his review is the same. If you want a chill CH332 teacher and not have to show up to class this is the man for you
Professor Walker is a good professor and a very nice guy. His lectures are boring -- I often fell asleep -- but his notes are very detailed, and he posts his lectures online as well. The exam study guides are definitely helpful, and I highly recommend working through them before the midterm and final. The online quizzes sucked, but were bearable.
He uploads all of his lectures online, so I showed up to less than a third of them. Don't bother buying the textbook, just study lecture notes and midterm/final reviews (test questions are pulled from the reviews though reworded). There is a lot of content in O-chem so prepare for memorization, but his tests are so easy, it's no problem.
Dr. Walker was one of my favorite chemistry professors at OSU so far! The quizzes are really helpful for actually learning the material, and his study guides + lecture notes actually help you learn the material.
I took Dr. Walker 's class 17 years ago at OSU. He was the best teacher. The fact I remember him and none of the other teachers says something. He knew me by name and my brother too. That is saying something at a big university. You won't meet a nicer teacher.
I get that distance learning is new, but a professor should learn how to make new content and ADAPT. This is something that Jeff Walker hasn't done. All of the pre-recorded lectures are from 1-2 years past. His voice is monotone, unenthusiastic, and makes you want to snooze. He does not make learning chem fun or easy, so have fun teaching yourself!
If you want to learn nothing, go ahead and take Jeff. Offers no extra help outside of class for students. Having to teach myself everything and can't seem to get any help from him at all. Canvas website is a scattered mess and can't seem to adapt to anyones learning style but his own which is making you teach yourself.
Jeff didn't do any lectures and he canceled recitation. Basically, you had to teach yourself outside of class. If you like learning from the textbook and recorded lectures maybe you'll enjoy his class.
Things were difficult with online classes, however I think Dr. Walker did a great job with being very organized and clear with expectations. There were not regular lectures/recitations, however there were recorded lectures. Dr. Walker provides more than enough resources in order to do well in his class.
Walker was responsible for the CH337 lectures. Lectures could be dry and some of the videos were long but they were easy enough to follow. Had us fill in pre-prepared note sheets so there was very little guess work on what information was important. Released very helpful review material for the exams that told us verbatim what he was testing us on.
