Great guy, very down to earth and will help you with anything you need. I see students in his office getting help all the time. Would highly recommend him
Dr. Winiarz is the best! He knows his stuff and is a good listener and good speaker. He is very approachable and is the same open minded, friendly, helpful person every single day. Quantum chemistry is a tough class and Dr. Winiarz expects alot, but if you want easy then you shouldn't be studying chemistry.
Hardest chemistry class I have ever taken. Very good teacher but the material is extremely difficult. Almost impossible to keep up with taking notes. Homework is extra credit which helps immensely. I was thrilled to get a C.
This is one of his first years teaching the General Chemistry 1 class. He's a great lecturer and teacher, but he tends to run late in this class and you'll find that not all of the material on the homework got covered in class. Really nice guy though.
While Jeff is funny and very dad-like, he's not the best at this class. He gets off topic and rambles. You'll never finish the lecture or have the "Internets" work. He's a nice person, but I watched the other professor's lecture to learn.
Mr. Jeff Winiarz, what an illustrious man. His love for chemistry is unrivaled except for his love for vodka. This surprisingly doesn't affect his teaching capabilities in the slightest. This God of a man will drill into your head the importance of fudge factors and plugging in the numbers and doing the math. 10/10 would take again, love you Jeff.
Great chem professor. Really funny dude. Made the class actually fun. He's laid back and chill. He's really working that Dad-Bod. Saw him at the Locker Room once; so you know he's cool.
Jeff is hilarious, has a good taste in music, and he organizes his knowledge based on whether or not information is intuitive to him. A wonderful professor.
I always enjoyed his lectures, though the tests can be tough. As long as you show up to class, do the homework, and study for tests, you should pass this class.
Great job at explaining things. Only complaint is that he usually doesn't finish his lectures. Really seems to care about his students. Tests are really hard, STUDY.
Textbook isn't necessary, but comes with access to the online homework. Lots of homework after every lecture. Make sure to go to LEAD to get bonus points and practice!!! Didn't always get through every lecture, but what he did get through, you would know very well. Great professor and really fun during class.
He is amazing in class, but hard exams
This class is pretty difficult if you don't put in the time. He recently changed to multiple choice tests which make it very difficult to get exceptional scores. They also make you do a lot of unit conversions to mistakes are certain. He is a pretty interesting guy though, and despite some of the hate he got, taught the material very well.
His lectures get sidetracked often and his class can run over time. His grading system is great and allows for students to miss class or fail an assignment a few times without failing the course.
Personally, I thought Jeff was a chill and respectable dude. Professionally, I despised him as a professor. The test material is not covered in the lectures or recitations. Students can easily make a C or D in the course, but it takes work to earn a B. I would not take a course with Jeff again if presented with the opportunity.
Jeff purposely made this course harder to pass. Tests have more questions, removed bonus points from LEAD, and recitations are moved to Tuesdays meaning you have to look at material covered on Wednesdays. If you get this layout for the semester DROP. Im only saying this because Fall2018 semester a lot of my peers said the class was fair.
Seeing as this is a prerequisite for most majors, Jeff makes this class way too difficult. Most people struggle because of the course load; each week you have 2 homework assignments and a long recitation. It's difficult to get an A but it's possible. Good luck to anyone having to take this class.
LOTS of time spent on homework (especially online recitations). Chem 1310 is very difficult for an introductory level chemistry. Some information seems to just be not taught but expected to be known, and a lot has to be memorized in the first two weeks. Very hard class, takes way more time than expected.
An amazing professor. Showed us pictures of his trip to Africa throughout the semester. I'd definitely want him again if my major allowed it.
Weird guy. Lectures are only a little boring but the homework is difficult as it isn't similar to anything covered in lectures. The tests are also all multiple choice with trick answers so it's easy to miss a lot of points if you don't have the material down 100%. Still his grading scale allows you to get a decent grade even if you get Cs on tests
Recitations are on Tuesdays, meaning you take it the day before lecture and you have to teach yourself the lesson. The tests are difficult and there's no extra credit. The homework is hard and takes multiple hours to complete; half the time he doesn't cover it in class. Be prepared to do a lot of work.
He is my least favorite professor. His lectures, homework, and recitations did not address any of the test material. In addition, he believes that the majority of the students should fail the course. If the majority of students are succeeding, he changes the exams to raise the difficulty level. Do not ever take his course(s).
Jeff is passionate about what he does. That means you get to be passionate about a ton of recitation and class homework too! This class requires a Chegg account unless you want to spend 6+ hours a week doing solely Chemistry homework. Tests are very detailed and tough to get a good grade on, but recitation and homework will carry your grade!
Jeff may be the single greatest Chemistry teacher in existence. I left my full ride scholarship at Harvard just so I could take his General Chemistry course.
Great professor. Really knows what he's doing most of the time, and knows how to get you the info when he doesn't. HW is rather heavy, but it's all good info.
He gives way too much homework that it's ridiculous. He also gives homework with content that he doesn't even teach beforehand. He going to talk about his trip to Kenya everyday so be prepared for that. Wouldn't recommend. Take this class at community college!
Jeff is so funny and nice and teaches coherently. The material is a little hard if this is your first chem class but it won't consume your entire life trying to get an a. lots of clicker questions in person and online that are pretty easy if you are paying attention. I loved this class and professor.
This class is clearly I weed out class and it is ridiculous. He will fit in a lot of information during lecture and only go over very easy problems that do not reflect whatsoever to his exams. He says LEAD sessions help but they will not help that much. He has made inappropriate comments and will speak down to his students.
Very inconsiderate of students time and goals.
Jeff was a great and charismatic teacher. His class was enjoyable even in an online format. Many will say he gave too much homework, but I think it's the right amount. It's perfect to reinforce the topics learned.
I'm a transfer student who started at spring semester. My book for this class never allowed me to get in after I signed up. It's now week 4 and I have him, 4 depts., and the freaking Dean in an email, we almost have my book figured out, and now he's said "extensions aren't his policy." TBH, he's qualified to teach, but def shouldn't. DO. NOT. TAKE.
Jeff doesn't care about you or anybody else. He takes pride in his high failing rate. He's mean and arrogant. He purposefully tries to trick everyone in class with his insane clicker questions over material we literally just learned and doesn't give us a chance to take anything in before he starts punishing us for getting things wrong.
Jeff explains everything very well and uses relevant examples and figures to help explain during the lectures. There is about 1hr / night of homework as well as the clicker questions and recitations. If you go to class and pay attention, the exams aren't so tough.
Hard course with lots of homework and tests have strict grading.
You basically have to go to the tutoring sessions that are twice a week or you are going to struggle. You really need to pay attention during lectures and take good notes. Homeworks take about 2-3 hours to complete and there is 2-3 assigned/week.
Moves much too fast in lectures, recitations usually leave more questions than answers. Relies almost entirely on e-textbooks and online HW, which is difficult to access normally let alone when trying to navigate the Pearson course page which is needlessly confusing and slow to load even on a fairly modern PC with fast Internet
cool dude
Jeff is very condescending and tends to have a "figure it out or come to LEAD" mentality (which just takes up more time) and his favorite phrase is "you should know this by now" which is so helpful. Work load is insane, do not take any other classes that give you homework. You'll have 4+ hours every lecture (2 days to work on).
Cool guy, but Jeff should 100% be teaching masters courses, not freshman Gen Chem. He has built in points you can lose, which is a plus so you can get 100% on HW, lecture points, quizzes, etc, but the tests will make or break your grade regardless. Be ready to study, and to get info from past students in the course.
Requires you to actually do the homework and reading and there's kind of a lot. But there's also extra credit and helpful TA's if you're lucky, so it's not hard to get a B if you put in work. People complain about the class because it takes a lot of time and work to do well but it is totally doable to get an A.
this is the third time this week ive had a 2+ hour homework assignment from this man
I'm sure he's a great guy. His class still makes me want to unalive every day.
has a good guy, but the assignments could take 3+ hours
I went to lead to do my homework every week and plenty of helpful TAs were there as well as Jeff himself. You could ask questions, and they would explain it to you. I think people underestimate how much studying you will have to do. This is college, its definitely the hardest class for a freshman, but just put in the work.
There are easily 12+ hours of homework a week. Dude could not care less about his students. I had a severe car accident and his reply was "Extensions aren't my policy." I work a full time job that inhibits my ability to attend Lead which jeff likes to say is the source of all my problems. Dropped and taking it through ECC.
I came into this class with 3 years of prior Chemistry experience under my belt, and still got my butt whooped by this class. Jeff is a cool dude but a ROUGH professor. The HW's are super long, and the tests are all multiple choice (no partial credit for wrong answers). Genuinely the toughest class I've taken so far. Be wary, and do your homework!!
Holy cow this class sucked. They only give me 350 words to yap but I can easily push this past 3500. Homeworks are a long marathon and take 3+ hours each to do, tests are terribly formatted, and you HAVE to go to LEAD to get any help. It's sink or swim, and Jeff does NOT care if you know how to swim. He'll watch you sink and blame it on you.
Homework was a nightmare and even with LEAD courses, he was impossible to get ahold of
Disrespectful know-it-all
He was rude and not a good teacher
Avoid this SOB at all costs. His attendance taking software (That we had to pay to use) malfunctioned and was not counting attendance from myself and a few friends. There was no indication that the software was not working from our end, and when confronted, he blamed us and refused to give us the points we earned.
Rarely covers the fundamental elements needed to understand the materials and skips to the formulas and leaves the "teaching" to the homework. The homework is too time consuming, and it's a hit or miss if it's relative to the lesson. The exams aren't relative to the homework and only cover the "basics" that were rushed through.
He's about a decade behind in the memes he puts on his slides. Prepare to stay up late doing homework for this class, it's not an unbearable amount, but more than necessary. If you have homework on the same day as recitation, get it done early. Needs to give more credit for recitations because 3 points for an hour and a half of chem isn't great.
The one thing that I can clearly say about him is that he talks to the students, some that have never taken a chemistry class before, like they should know it. He doesn't go very far in depth for examples, and just expects us to be a master in the class.
One of the best lecturers I've had. A lot of work outside of class but as long as you do the homework and study reasonably well for the exams you'll end with an A.
Unfortunately, Jeff rating gets tanked by freshman having a hard time with the college transition and blame the difficulty on him. The homework is long, but students that struggle shouldn't be spending less time on the material. Go to LEAD, get the easy extra credit, reach out for help, and I'm confident you'll get an A.
Do not take this class whatsoever. If you are good at studying, no you're not. If you've never studied, you better learn fast because I've never studied so much for an exam and done so poorly. Nobody like this class because it's a weed out class. It's manageable but you have to pour your heart and soul into this class to get a B or a C.
Homework is meaningless, recitation is too long, tests are near impossible to get As on, and for whatever grade you do get, you have to study infinitely harder than for any other class. Chatgpt-ed most of the homework for this class as it got repetitive and nonhelpful as it would typically take 2.5ish hours to complete each one.
Professor Winiarz will give you all the tools to succeed you just have to use them. He doesn't hand out an A, you will have to actually work for it. After the first test he even says that your grade is not based on your intelligence but on how well you prepared. However you only need a 40% average on the exams to get a C.
Winiarz is disliked by many because the class asks for actual effort. As long as you don't chatgpt the homework and show up at recitation, you'll do fine on the exams. His lectures are deep and comprehensive and usually include some brainrot memes from 2009 that (ironically) are funny. Lots of resources exist if you want to do well. Use them.
Gen chem is infinitely harder than any other class you'll have your first semester, even Calc 2, a notoriously hard class. Homeworks easily take 2.5 hours or so twice a week if you put effort in. The problem most people have with the class, myself included, is that, while is possible to get an A, it's SO much harder than any other 1000 level class.
Be prepared to do a LOT of homework and be tested fairly frequently. Clicker questions are important, but Jeff usually gives the students a lot of hints.. Do the reading!! The lecture should not be the first time you're encountering the information, or you will get confused because of Jeff's fast pace. Very time-consuming, but achievable
People hate on Jeff for no reason. Yes, his class is difficult, but that's because of the material, not because of him. You can get away with not going to LEAD ever as long as you go to recitation and pay attention/ask questions there. His tests are tough but not impossible, and reading the textbook is important for this class.
tough grader but if you put in effort you'll pass
Dr. Winiarz is not the friendliest, and his class is not designed well for anyone unless you are a chem major. He is not very understanding, and the amount of work is time consuming and stressful, especially if you have no background in chemistry. Make sure you do the prep course for some foundational knowledge and a chance for bonus points.
Very tough class but very effective professor.
Class is difficult, but if you actually apply yourself and pay attention you'll do great. He rewards good study habits by encouraging LEAD attendance and provides lots of great study material. Very reachable outside of class and really wants you to succeed. His class also gives you a good feeling of what to expect here at S&T.
I'll start by saying Dr. Winiarz is a good instructor and I only dropped because of some personal issues. If you're passionate about chemistry, this course is for you. Dr. Winiarz is fair and encouraging, but a lot is required from the student to succeed. If you're just taking the course for prerequisites, I would advise looking elsewhere.
Recitations sucked and Prof. Winiarz assigns lots of homework, but what are you gonna expect. Took this course as part of an 18 credit hour first semester and all in all, it really wasn't that bad. Just put in some effort and you'll get an A. It's only general chemistry after all.
tests are all multiple choice which sounds good but theyre all barely different (like a comma instead of a period), theres 5 or 6 options, and no partial credit. he makes the class designed to fail you. he gives about 50-100 homework questions every-every other day.
This man yelled at me for not using the black board during lead sessons (calk makes my hands break out) and called my entire class stupid multiple times. Single handedly caused me to have multiple panic attacks a day. Makes the book do all the teaching, so you'd learn just as much buying the text book.
Jeff was okay. It's just generally a hard class. I didn't really try or show up to class and my grade is a reflection of that. I think if you actually show up and put in the effort you should do okay.
Assigns an ungodly amount of homework.
Hours worth of homework don't take this professor
Content isn't difficult but there is an unreasonable amount of homework
I took CHEM 1305, not 101. Way too much homework, and the tests are difficult. There is a lot of content and little time. He also makes you watch lecture videos before the lecture, and during actual lecture time, you have to do clicker questions. The clicker app subscription was $40 and not optional. This class drained me.
Jeffery is an okay teacher. His lecture and Panopto videos are perfectly fine and are good enough to learn and retain the material. My issue was the amount of work that each of the homeworks would have twice and week and the material that is covered on the test. He tells us one thing about the exam and come to the exam it is completely different.
i don't like this class
By far the hardest class I've ever taken. Covered way too much way too quickly. Around 10 hours of homework per week. Must watch 2 hour long lecture videos before the actual lecture. He uses language that is hard to understand and over complicates things.
He gave way too much homework for the pace we were moving at on top of the hours worth of lecture material outside of our lecture time. The tests are very difficult and were every three weeks. Overall, this class had far too much material in too short of a time frame and he gave an unreasonable amount of work.
This guy knows a lot and ambushes you on material on the tests that you went over once
I think people are a little harsh on this guy just because it's a chemistry class. I mean, he's not my favorite, but chemistry at a university centered around engineering is gonna suck.
Assigns a lot of reading, 4 hour homework's, hour long lectures to watch. However, the professor is very kind and cares about teaching.
This course was in a flipped classroom style format which is really not conducive to student learning in my opinion. Spent roughly 7-8 hours a week studying, doing homework, completing recitation, and watching pre-recorded lectures. Despite this, Prof. Winiarz is a solid professor that definitely wants his students to succeed.
I have never met a professor that had to change the requirements to pass just so he could meet his minimum passing requirements for the course. Not to mention you were required to learn all the material before class and when it was time for exams he lied to us about what was actually going to be on them. Homework is beyond abundant as well.
