He is hard as **** but he will help you. Plan on donating a lot of time for him.
Although he is a difficult professor you will take a lot away from the course.
awful
excited about his students learning, extremely helpful, don't let him scare you
He's really involved and he wants you to get the best grade you can.
He makes you work but really cares about his students. One of the best
Great teacher! efforts really pay off, funny too!
Total hardass, plan to live in his office! You'll learn lot though.
His personality is so motivating and he is an awesome educator.
Great guy, total hard ass but he goes above and beyond the call of duty.
Good@explaining. Motivating, Works with you Cons:expects the best.hard quizzes
Forgets his students have feelings!

Very difficult but makes class fun, could be a comedian
This guy is the master BS-er. Sometimes he may not know what he's talking about but can say things in such a way that make them seem intelligent. Class is not easy, but he is a good teacher. He gives extra credit and wants you to do good.
Awesome teacher, very young and fun... likes to use real life experiences.... keeps you awake and you want to listen... very inspiring teacher... get in if you can!!!!
Very interesting and funny. Quizzes are confusing. If you don't read you won't do that well. Midterm is hard! He wants you to put in 8 hours of studying. Papers are hard. Be prepared to talk in class and don't be absent.
reading quizes, presentations, and big ass paper at the end of the semester....this dude is not easy, but hes a pretty good teacher. If you arent a psych major, you might not want to take such a intensive class.
extremely good teacher, i've never learned so much from one class. he's always there to help you, you just have to put the effort in. you work very hard, but it pays off in the end...for the rest of your college career.
he is great. he is funny and makes you want to pay attention. he is hard but if you don't slack off you will do well. great to talk to outside of class and he is always willing to help.
this man is no joke. he will work your tail off and he even warns you about it on the first day of class. he is one of the best instructors i have ever had. if you take him you will be thankful if you pass for the rest of your life. knowledge is king!
Great teacher! Makes lectures interesting. Quizzes can be unclear, so pay attention to the way he words them. Tests are hard and reviews are at night. You'll rewrite your paper tons but go to class!
ok teacher... struggled at first.... then he helped me... intimidating in beginning... looks not to shabby.... athletic... heard hes gotten easier... will help you if you come to him... posts grades to help you know your progress
interesting lectures. funny. not as intimidating as he tries to make you think he is. do your readings/skim read for quizzes. tests are fair- go to the study sessions! do extra credit experiments. if you write a paper, turn it in early for extra pts/help!
very hard his exam averages are 66
Great lectures, really enjoys the topic. Weekly participation credit, and quizes after every chapter. If you don't read he'll know and give the class a quiz, so just participate!
Trouble in the beginning, but it got a lot easier. Frequent quizzes: Keep up with reading. Questions are tricky. Do as much extra credit as you can, go to review sessions, participate. Gibbons is hilarious, so I enjoyed going to class. I've never learned so much (or worked so hard) in one class.
I Love Dr.Gibbons! He is an awsome professor. Gives plenty of opportunities to get extra credit points and to revise papers! He is funny, interesting and easy on the eyes =)
i've never done so much work for one class but i've never learned so much. dr. gibbons is the best prof. i've had. makes the class fun and gives plenty of chances to rewrite papers and hmwks. listen to what he says in the beginning about slacking off....HE'S RIGHT. easy to pass if you do the work.
Dr.Gibbons is one of the most difficult professors that I have ever had. Go to the Procrastinator's Ball at the end of semester to earn extra credit points. They will help your final grade!
Arrogant, conceited and cocky. You learn a lot, but he expects entirely too much for a 202 class. Irritating manner.
complete and utter ****, but intelligent. You'll learn alot and pull out alot of hair too...
amazing professor! He's kinda tough but if you go to him with questions, he can be very helpful. Offers a lot of ways to get extra credit! GO TO PROCRASTINATOR's BALL! Its an easy 50 extra credit points if you also present! I have never learned so much and done so much work, but it's really worth it!
This is one of those classes that you HAVE to work at constantly no matter who teaches. Gibbons warns you early on...listen to what he has to say! Do any extra credit that comes your way and go to see him for questions. Very helpful, funny guy...don't be intimidated!
really helpful if you go to see him- the quizzes in each class and all the extra credit opportunities make it easy to do well if you go to class- dont miss quizzes and rewrite papers as often as you can!
the class can be difficult and requires a lot of work, but if you plan on taking any other psyc courses this will be really really helpful.
wow, prof gibbons is THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!! all he does is talk about sex the entire time and actually makes learning fun. You don't really have to remember any specifics just know concepts. His summaries are hard but that's it everything else is EASY!!!
Wow! finally done with PYSC!Dr. Gibbons is a great person loves to talk about sex and his son and wife!He is very willing to help but you have to take the first step in getting help!Do all the extra credit if possible and attend the review nights and stay for the whole time cause it helps! He's the hardest PYSC teacher but do what he says & u'll b o
Dr. Gibbons is a really awesome teacher, but pretty hard. His daily quizzes are always tricky, but if you do the millions of extra credit you'll be fine. Also, make sure to actually put serious effort into your articles and power point, and seek him out for help. He's funny and will help you with anything...he's also pretty hot for a professor...ha
Dr. Gibbons is awesome! But,a good professor comes with a big price.I've never done so much work for a class!Daily quizzes, psychology article summaries, powerpoints. The thing I liked was that he posted our grades outside his office, so we could keep track of how we were doing in the class. And yeah, he talks about sex!But it's in context,of course.Hah
Gibbons I believe would be most amazing in a much smaller class, as seventy five in the class I was in seemed like overkill for him. Though I got mad all the time and complaining about the mind games and assignments, his class got me prepared for the more difficult aspects of college...which is good. So I can't really hate him for it.
although he is tough and expects a lot from his students, he is a very good teacher. his lectures are actually very interesting and animated, tho his notes are less than helpful. however, he is perfectly willing to explain anything you don't understand, w/out making you feel like an idiot. his grading system for papers is tough tho, watch out.
No doubt about it, He is a hard teacher. But he gives plenty of extra credit and if you do that you can afford to fail the exams. Very helpful and knows alot about the field.
Offers plenty of extra credit so even if you don't do so well on the major assignments it doesn't matter! Keeps class interesting with his tangents
Has a huge ego. His class made me hate psychology. Too much work to earn just a C. Offers a lot of extra credit but I earned over 20 points of it and still ended with a C-. Would not recommend taking him.
If you're going take intro to psych, only take it with Gibbons if you're a psych major. It is WAY to much work for an intro class if you're not going to be a psychology major. Believe me, you will be sorry. I wouldn't even take it for a minor, seriously. Other than that, he's a really nice guy and his class is very entertaining, to say the least.
The workload in this class is ridiculous, it's so much for an intro class. I would not recommend taking Gibbons for 201, simply because of the workload. Other than that, he's a really nice guy, teaches well, and funny.
do not take this class. if you want a buddy he's a cool guy, other than that, teaching style is all over the place. lets see what i learned....um nothing! workload is nuts, not that its too much, he's an insane, hard grader. i wish i'd never taken this class. it was kind of fun but that won't help you on the daily quizes and tests (take rilea)
If you are planning to continue your education take Dr.Gibbons for psych 301. It's a difficult class, but he will set you up to excell in higher levels classes and prepare you for graduate school. He is very honest about his expectations and provides plenty of opportunities (through extra credit etc.) to get an A+ if you don't procrastinate!
Gibbons is probably the hardest professor I've ever had, but I learned the most with him. I would only recommend Psyc majors, or people sincerely interested in the subject, to take him. The workload is intense, tests are hard, and research articles will make you cry. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE, and you/ your GPA will make it out alive (I got a B).
I had Gibbons for 301, as well as senior sem now, and he is all bark and little bite. Motivation is key in his class, you'll want to do well he's a great, and very fun teacher. You cover a lot of material, but he gives away EASY POINTS. Go to class and get involved, you'll learn and you'll pass. Seriously he is not as hard as ppl say
This class was ridiculous! For an intro class to be this difficult was crazy! He is the hardest grader that I've ever had, although he does let you revise a lot of things. He quizzes are crazy and you take one everyday! You have to stay on top of things to do well in this class...
not as difficult as some people say, but definitely expect to do work. readings every night and quizzes almost every class but they are only 5 questions. if you go visit him in his office, he is so nice and easy to talk to! he pushed/encouraged me to do my best work, and it paid off!! i've gone back to visit him this semester because i miss him!
Pretty crazy guy, he's funny and animated so it's easy to stay awake. Has quizzes everyday! And for all you people who say he is not a hard grader check out this statistic: There are 75 people in the class, 4 have an A.
Do not take classes with Dr. Gibbons unless you want to truly learn. He can be kind of biting at times and he doesn't take any BS (which is great for people who don't like BS). There was a very rude student in one of his classes and he called her out on it. It made me respect him as a person. He's very helpful, but you have to seek him out. Expect
He is interesting but VERY HARD! IF you ever have slacker moments, dont take him.
Since I now know he checks his scores... I just figured I'd say something. He's a great teacher, likes to push his students so that they will succeed (let's admit it, some of us NEED that). You HAVE to show up to class but you'll learn a lot, and you'll have fun. Put in some effort and you'll be fine, slack off and you wont, simple as that.
It's a hard class. I am a traditionally a slacker, and i loved this class. It was the only class that i didn't miss all semester, a-because you lose points if you aren't there b- because the class was actually rewarding. ALOT of work. totally worth it, if you want to learn and want a professor who cares, and is willing to help take this class!
Will push you to perform, is very willing to discuss the material at length and in detail, admits when he doesn't have an answer, will help you seek out answers to material outside of the classroom. He's also one of two or three CNU professors who I think actually produce a difficult course. Can be intimidating, but get over it and you'll benefit.
Prety hard class. Take all of his advise like... READ and take notes WHILE you are reading. STUDY a little every night. You have tricky quizzes everyday. PARTICIPATE- it's part of your grade & it really helps you understand. BE PREPARED TO WORK, you're in college and you are paying to be here so pay attention. You'll learn a lot w/ him. FUNNY GUY!
The class isn't as bad as some people say. Truly, it's not. He will try to intimidate you on the first day, but if you work hard, you will do fine. There are four papers on topics you choose. However, if you turn it in early, you get to rewrite them as much as you want. Just do the work, stay on top of it, and have fun. He's a really nice guy.
Had him fall of 2005. Tough class, but you learn a lot. If you want an A, you need to do as much extra credit as physically possible, and you have to read the book. It's possible, but not easy. Some people may not think it's worth it, but I found the extra effort really helps for both learning and making the grade.
You definetly need to work your butt off to get a good grade in his class. Always do your papers early, even if you aren't sure you're doing it right. You get extra credit points for doing it early and don't be afraid to ask questions. He's super funny and a nice person, just work really hard and you'll do fine! 301 took over my life but it paid of
Dont be intimidated by him,hes actually very easy to talk to you and is willing to help you however he can. low numbers on papers and homeworks dont matter because you have all semester to redue them. DO EVERYTHING EARLY..it will pay off. hes a great professor, he loves his job and it shows. his class is not easy but you learn a lot.
DO NOT TAKE HIM if you are not a Psych major. His intro class was retardedly hard, way too much work for any intro class. If you are a full time student and you have a life, I promise you will NOT do well in this class.
very good teacher but definitely not an easy A. Overall the class was worth all the effort I put into it and I learned a lot. I'm in the next level class now and find that I know most of the things the teacher is going over from his class. I would highly recommend his class but only if you are willing to do the work that goes along with it.
difficult class, but great lectures. don't schedule classes right after because they go over sometimes. 4 papers, 2 tests, 1 powerpoint. turn in everything early to get extra credit. do all readings. hes a great teacher-goes out of his way to help students, but students also have to help themselves. i'd highly recommend his class bc you learn a ton
Apparently he doesn't treat his Honors classes different from his non-H, which is hard on either one. Really animated lectures, pretty ridiculous workload; if you stay on task (like I shoulda done), you'll do well :) GO TO HIM IF YOU NEED HELP - it'll pay off.
Apparently he doesn't treat his Honors classes different from his non-H, which is hard on either one. Really animated lectures, pretty ridiculous workload; if you stay on task (like I shoulda done), you'll do well :) GO TO HIM IF YOU NEED HELP - it'll pay off.
Great professor! You have to do 4 papers that are only 2 pages on articles that you choose and quizzes everyday on the readings (can be tricky but are there to help boost your grade). Turn ALL articles in early to get extra credit and time to revise them. The midterm and final are very tough so STUDY! Even if you bomb both you can still get an A.
Dr. Gibbons is the man. If you whine about his class, you are a freaking slacker and shouldn't be in college. Ignore all the negative reviews. If you do your work early, it MORE than pays off... he has tricks up his sleeve for the good students that turn in stuff early. Procrastinator's Ball = jackpot. Clearly loves his job and wants to help you.
Professor Gibbon's is an amazing professor. He's tough, understandable, interesting, and all around amazing. Even though the work load is big, you get plenty of time to turn things in early, which accumulate extra credit. Take this class if you have the free slot. You won't regret the experience of taking a class with Professor Gibbons. High qualit
Do your work early, and this class is a cakewalk. Talk to him early and start over winter/summer break. DON'T procrastinate. Go to him for help when you need it! The hardest lesson is time management. Get that? What you learn with Gibbons is worth it. Definitely recommended. Would take again, I got an A.
He is the man and he want his students to do well no doubt about it.
Kind of intimidating at times, not always clear about details of assignments, but very interesting, lively, and engaging. Loves messing with his students and trying to throw them off. Watch out for his quizzes and tests; he'll purposefully mess up questions just to see if you'll catch it.
Gibbons is definitely the hardest prof i've ever had, but he is a good guy. you CANNOT procrastinate in this class. make sure you don't take any other hard classes in the same semester. you MUST come to class since participation is a part of your grade and you have to stay up to date with your reading. he can be intimidating, but also very helpful.
Dr. Gibbons is a great teacher. His class is tough compared to others at CNU, but I imagine it's what college classes should be. The class isn't too bad if you read the chapters, listen in class, and do your work ahead of time. Also, he is very easy to talk to outside of class, so don't be shy if you have a question!
PSYC 201 is a lot of work for a low-level class. However thats what he believes in. He's an awesome guy and he's really funny. Don't skip class because it's crucial to your grade and understanding, and he also likes to entertain with stories of his college days, his son, and his Japanese wife, who I don't think he really likes all that much.
Dr. Gibbons is absolutely amazing. His class can be hard but really if you do your work, it shouldn't be a problem. Turn stuff in early and get extra credit. I don't know why everyone says this class is too much for an intro class. I am not a psych major/minor or anything and I didn't think it was too in depth. Go to the test reviews!
Go to class. Particapation is part of the grade and make up essay quizzes sound harsh. Go to procrastonators ball. 14 hours this semester and went till 7 am but worth it for how much it helped my grade. Dr Gibbons is awesome and I would take this class again. It was one of my favorites this semester. Hi Dr Gibbons.
Awesome teacher and an awesome guy! I'm almost sad the class is over. Obviously cares a ton about his students and his job. He's extremely helpful both in and out of the classroom. I've never had another teacher who gave so much of his time for the students' benefit, staying through all hours of the night for procrastinators' ball & review sessions
Dr. Gibbons is awesome! Make sure you keep up with readings and homework. Work can seem overwhelming at times, but only if you procrastinate. He really cares about students, and works with you. Definitely look forward to taking more classes with him. Procrastinator's Ball is the greatest thing EVER for your grade.
I loved this class! I'm not a psych major, but I have a strong interest in it, and Dr. Gibbons made it intellectually stimulating. Lots of people whined about 201 being too much for an intro, but this is what a college class should be like! Sadly, as a sophomore, it was the first class I've taken that met my expectations. Thank you, Dr. Gibbons!
Quizzes daily and difficult, Midterm exam very difficult...he even says the first page of the exam is "murder row"...i do not have trouble with any class except this one...university should let him go...bad teacher...enough said...if you want an A you will work your butt off
See, I get two ratings because I've had him twice. Let me reiterate this point- stop whining. Welcome to college. Do your work and stop complaining about a great experience you PAID FOR. Class has ALOT of work, only take 13 credits when you take it. Offers ALOT of extra credit to beef your grade (because he grades tough). You learn so much!!!
Very tough class, although Prof Gibbons is very approachable. Take advantage of as much extra credit as you can. Read test and quiz questions carefully, he purposefully tries to see if people can catch mistakes. Read often and prepare for a quiz every class! GOOD LUCK!
Dr. Gibbons is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He lets you turn your papers in and make corrections until you make them perfect. He is extremely helpful and wants his students to succeed. He loves psychology and loves to teach it. He is highly energized and gets you pumped up for class. TURN EVERY ASSIGNMENT IN EARLY!!!
Listen to him. He tells you exactly what you need to do to pass the class. It's quite a bit of work, but do the work and don't procrastinate and you'll be fine
Gibbons comes across very tough, but if you talk to him he is extremely helpful. 301 is a lot of work, but really the material isn't that difficult. Turn in assignments EARLY- you get an extra credit point for every day you turn it in early! I got an A+. The first week is horrible... I was so stressed. But you will get used to him and the work!
I loved Dr. Gibbons! He seems really hard at first, but once you get into the semester it's not bad at all. Turn in assignments early and he lets you correct them until they're perfect. And go to the procrastinator's ball, so much extra credit. Don't skip class either, you'll miss out on a lot.
his lectures are enjoyable but this guy is a tool on a power trip. class average is a D which is crazy for an intro course. i'm not too bothered by the workload...it is a lot! i'm bothered by the fact that i'm getting so little in return for the amount of work i put in. i wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Challenging professor. Turn things early and you can edit them until you get a good score. Read before EVERY class because there are daily quizzes. Would not recommend to a student outside of the psychology major.
He was the best professor I ever had, but also the hardest. If you go to every class and do the readings and turn articles in early then you will do great.
He is an amazing professor. Gibbons truly pushes you to your limits, and you accomplish things you thought you never could. I don't suggest taking any other demanding courses while enrolled in 301. The work load is extremely lofty, but the amount of knowledge you gain from his class is priceless.
It's not the work I mind doing, it's his negative and unapproachable attitude that really makes him an awful professor. Just because you know a lot about a subject doesn't mean you should teach it. Be prepared to work really really hard for an A.
He is a very hard professor who if you signed up late for a class he will still keep zeros in the grade book, even though you weren't registered for the class. He gives you a lot of opportunity for extra credit. HE gives you quizzes every class.
Gibbons is the hardest of the 301 professors. He doesn't babysit, but he will help you along the way as long as your willing to put in the work. You HAVE to come to class, and you take quizzes after each chapter which can be tricky b/c he puts mistakes on his quizzes and you need to figure out the mistakes as a class. overall he's a great.
I did fine in the beginning, thought he was funny and the class would be interesting. his lectures became more erratic and hard to follow, and he just became really unhelpful and kind of a jerk. Was my first semester of college, made me CRY multiple times! Avoid if possible. Will tank your GPA even after you work your *** off.
There is no doubt that Gibbons is the hardest teacher I've ever had. However, I think he is an awesome teacher. He knows psychology. You have 5 questions quizzes most classes, and the midterm and final are extremely hard, however, he gives TONS of extra credit, enough to boost you 1-2 grade levels. He is also very willing to help his students :)
Awesome instructor, exactly what a student would hope to have teaching them. Knows his stuff, very knowledgeable and able to answer questions clearly. Always will to help a student one on one. Daily quizzes. Read the book before class, take notes, review them regularly and you will get an A! MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF EXTRA CREDIT AVAILABLE TO FLUFF GRADE!
Professor Gibbons class was a challenge, but worth it. I learned a lot. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, which helped my grade. If you don't raise your hand and ask questions he takes away participation points. Gives quizzes at least once a week. Tests are very hard, so plan to study for a good amount of time. He is very helpful!
I've never met anyone more dedicated than Dr. Gibbons. The workload is very challenging, but if you put in the time and effort, it will all be worth it -- you'll learn so much. He can seem gruff at first, but don't be intimidated. He's very friendly and loves helping students.
Professor Gibbons in very involved in helping his students and definitely wants them to succeed. However, you have to put in just as much work into the class. If you want to do well, you need to read the text book, take notes in class, and ask questions every week. He is an excellent professor but it is a challenging class for sure
Dr. Gibbons is easily my favorite professor. He works hard to put enthusiasm into the lectures, he only asks that you put the same amount of work back in by reading the textbook. He's really funny and he gives out TONS of extra credit. He is fantastic in my book. Do the work and you'll get the grade you earn.
This class demands a certain amount of self discipline. He is a very good teacher and keeps each lecture entertaining. He is a very hard working teacher and demands that back from his students. Though it is hard, his class has many benefits outside the credits and immediate knowledge.
Gibbs is a really great teacher, but he will absolutely make you work really hard. Dont take this class if you are looking for an easy GPA booster, cause he will bleed it out of you before giving away an easy grade.
Gibbons is great. He is very dedicated to making sure you actually learn something in his class. Although a lot of students see this as a negative aspect, he really contributes to your education. For those of us with poorer work ethic, he helps us develop a better and more consistent work ethic.
Professsor Gibbons is a very tough professor, but it is to make you have a better work ethic. You take a 5 question quiz almost every class. They can be tricky at first, but you will get used to it.Midterm and final are hard.No matter how long you study you could still not do that great. He does offer A LOT of ectra credit.Attendence is 2/pts a day.
He says to read the textbook and that it will help but the way he teaches doesnt link to the textbook at ALL. You'll think you understand it and then he confuses you and puts a quiz in front of you..every class. He will help you if you ask, yes. but save yourself the trouble and take the class from someone who can teach.
Gibbons is funny, and very knowledgable. However, he really makes you work for you're grade and he'll call you out if you're screwing around in class. I kind of hate him but I respect him a lot.
Avoid him for 301 at all costs!!! I like him as a person but he was extremely frustrating as a professor. Rambles endlessly and is constantly sidetracked yet test are 90% on his lectures. Tests are all essay and will take a minimum of 4 hours to complete. Majority of the class was there til 1am taking his tests. Worked harder in this class than any
Gibbons is intimidating at first, but he's quite entertaining and knows what he's talking about. He's big on quizzes from the reading and requires participation in all types of forms, such going to his office, asking questions in class, etc. He gives out hard earned extra credit, but if you read and participate, you'll do fine in his class!
Argumentative, haughty, and belittles his students when they ask for help.He is definitely biased in his grading and picks favorites. This professor made my semester a nightmare! Please, do yourself a favor and avoid his class, unless you want your GPA to tank.
I took this section of psyc 301 b/c I wanted to push myself and prove myself wrong. I thought that I would give up on myself and the class. With his help and constant encouragement, I have managed to work harder than I ever had in any class. I feel that I am actually EARNING my grade and that I am actually receiving the full worth of my education.
He gives a quiz at the end of every class about what he lectures. His class is very easy if you pay attrition you will be okay. An he is very helpful if you ask plus he offers a lot of extra credit assignments. Does tell a lot of off topic stories ,but overall great class !
Great Professor, very entertaining lectures. You may need to take notes on the textbook chapters unless you take very good notes and learn very quickly. "Quizzes" daily, but because they happen daily, no one or even handful of quizzes are going to screw your grade up too badly.
Dr. Gibbons is honestly the best professor that I have had at CNU. He makes his lectures very interesting with stories to go along with a lot of the topics, he is very helpful when it comes to your assigned work and especially study sessions the night before exams, and he really wants you to succeed.
I don't like Science, but I fell in love with Psychology. This was a tough class, but Dr. Gibbons helps you out and is there for his students if they need any help. He encourages his students to ask questions and makes sure each one is engaging during class. Wonderful class and professor and I would hands down take again.
Show up to class, pay attention, look over notes and you will pass. Easy to get a B, but hard to get an A.
His class was, honestly, the most traumatic experience of my life. I've never experienced stress and anxiety like I had in his class. I'm all about pushing your limits and challenging yourself, as both help you learn and grow. But, his approach is too rigid for learning in a classroom setting. I highly recommend avoiding enrollment in his courses.
Dr. Gibbons is a great professor. Definitely read the chapters before class it's the key to success in his class. He provides plenty of extra credit so it's easy to get a good grade. He does do daily quizzes at the end of class but they are on the material he goes over during that lecture.
You will have to attend and participate in order to get weekly credit. Also, most every class you will have a quiz. This is really helpful to your grade because it forces you to keep up with the material in the textbook. He will learn your name, too, so be prepared for when he calls on you in class.
If you don't like teachers who go on rants, beware Dr. Gibbons! He does have a bunch of extra credit which comes in handy for your final grade. He always talks about his family but he fills in his lectures with gibberish! Funny but definitely an over the top professor.
Dr. Gibbons is awesome. He goes on tangents all the time, but I enjoy his tangents. I was in a class of about 90 students, but it never felt that way. He's very good at making class feel personal even when it isn't. But beware, there are DAILY QUIZZES and their format takes some time to get used to. But he gives A LOT of extra credit.
Dr. Gibbons psyc201 was my most enjoyable class during my first semester at CNU. The class is really easy once you figure out that he is not there to get you to memorize definitions but actually learn. He has his moments like we all do, but using his outlines and doing what he says makes for an easy A.
J. Gibbs is a great teacher. He is super helpful. Reading for his class is not particularly necessary because he goes over everything you were supposed to read before the daily quiz at the end of class.
He is a dope guy, but his class is a lot harder than most people would think participation matters so if your shy, forget about it. we were in a lecture of 90+ and he still knew everyone name.
Gibbons is super sarcastic-treats you as an equal from day 1. some people see this as rude but I didn't. You have to work for his class but you learn so much from him. Absolutely 100% see him outside of class. You will get to know each other well. SO much extra credit and DO IT ALL - you will need it. very very work heavy. take during an easy sem.
definitely do the extra credit, you will not regret it at all. you can't slack off in his class. There is also only a midterm and final and quizzes at the end of basically every class but if you get him distracted enough in class you can delay the quiz till the next class.
If you want to do well, first, make sure you read the book before class. The book is very helpful. Second, use Quizlet and make flash cards for every term in the study guides. For the test, go over those sets multiple times. His midterms are not hard, apart from public belief. Rehearse the sets you make and you'll be fine! Daily quizzes as well.
He gives a lot of grades ranging from monthly participation and daily attendance to daily quizzes and exams. The many grades you're given in this class makes it hard to fail as long as you listen during lectures, which shouldn't be hard considering how funny he is and how interesting he makes classes. Office hours are good for getting feedback.
Dr. Gibbons is a great professor. You WILL need to use the textbook for this class. It is vital to read and take notes on the material before class because he does talk quickly and moves fast. He tells a lot of really great stories. He really cares about his students; in a lecture of 90 students, he knows each one of us by name. HIGHLY recommend!
His lectures are mandatory due to his constant (difficult) pop quizzes, but you rarely learn much from the lectures. You must learn your exam material on your own through the textbook. Provides stupid amounts of extra credit to boost your grade because everyone bombs the midterm/final. Pass both exams and do extra credit and youll get a B at min.
great teacher, do the reading and listen in class and you will be fine. makes the lectures very interesting
He was a very good lecturer who made the class very interesting. He goes over the info very well in a clear understanding manner and has an outline so that students can follow along during lectures and he breaks up learning with fun stories about his family. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities and review sessions for the final and midterm
He's very interesting in class. But you need to be prepared every day for a quiz, the class is very quiz heavy. The two tests are awful quite difficult.
Dr. Gibbon's taught the first Psychology class I ever took, and I am now a psychology major. He makes you work for it, so don't expect to breeze through his class, but I learned and understood so much! He does give daily quizzes, but you take them right after learning the information, and it adds lots of available points! 10/10 recommend!!
Dr. Gibbons is a very respectable Prof., however, he often loses track of what we're supposed to be talking about. You can clearly tell that he is very knowledgeable on the subject but he, 75% of the time, at least, talks solely about his wife and kids and rarely on the actual topic at hand. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities - TAKE THEM
Dr. Gibbons can be very in your face at times. I really did not like his teaching/ grading style. having a quiz almost every class was a little tedious. I do not recommend him. One good thing about him is even in a class of 100, he still knows everyone's name.
My favorite professor at CNU by far. I took him for 201 and 301. His class is a lot of work but he is so willing to help all his students & gives so much extra credit. He stays at his office for hours after his office hours just to help. You get so close to him especially in 301, and he's a great guy who makes class interesting.
Fairly difficult quizzes every day and expects you to read, take notes, and thoroughly know the material before EVERY class. There are only two tests, both very difficult. Very accessible outside class but has a very strong and overly confident personality. The extra credit isnt worth much but you need every bit you can get. Hardest class so far
As my first Psychology class ever, Dr. Gibbons made it nice to be able to grasp the material being taught. But his testing methods were completely insane. There were quizzes practically every class, that were formatted the wrong way purposely. The two tests: midterm and final, will absolutely kill your grade. Do all the extra credit you can!
Gibbons is a wonderful professor, but he's not here to deal with whining. He understands that everyone is human, and expects you to communicate like an adult if there is a problem. Quiz at end of almost every class, nothing too hard, best if you read/or at least listen in class. His stories make you all the more interested. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
I am not a psych major at all, but I did not mind this class with Dr. Gibbons. You have to come to class since there is a pop quiz almost every day of 5 MC questions (20%). The midterm and final are worth about 20% each and are formatted so that the class average is about 75-80. Part/Attend is worth about 15%. Do come to his office and do the EC.
Will never take a class from him again. One of the most arrogant and stubborn professors I have ever met.
Gibbons was honestly the best professor I've had. He always keeps the subjects interesting. There is a good amount of reading but there are also outlined notes. Loved his class and would definitely take it again.
Gibbons makes you work for your grade but offers so much extra credit and assistance you can easily get an A if you put effort into it. this class really taught me time management and improved my writing so much. he's the best psych professor at CNU and will go above and beyond for his students. the work is worth the bond you get with him
Gibbon's a funny and great lecturer. 10 pt quiz at the end of almost every class. Encourages you to read, take notes, and study before class. You will not pass if you constantly skip class (2 pts) or dont participate (4 pts). His quizzes are not as straight forward as he says, but sometimes they are verbatim of the text book. Do extra credit
Gibbons is very Smart. He knows what he is talking about. You are expected to read the book before class and there is almost always a quiz. He gives out a ton of extra credit opportunity so take advantage of it. His class can be boring and he likes to go off topic a lot. GO to his office hours but make sure your put a lot of time for it.
This man is eccentric to say the least. Walked into his office once to discuss homework and stayed in there for an hour talking about god knows what. I used to think his quizzes were hard until I actually started reading and realized they're not that hard. He gives a lot of extra credit which you can take advantage of. He plays hockey occasionally
Gibbons is a very intelligent and caring professor. This class is not "easy" but it can be if you are willing to stay on top of the readings, study your notes prior to each class, and listen to his lectures. He is wiling to help any student that applies themselves, and provides each student with the resources they need in order to pass this class.
A hard professor. He's been around a while in the teaching game and knows how students think. There is so much extra credit offered that you can get an A no matter what if you start early on it. Exams are hard!!!! No tests and only a midterm and a final exam.
In my opinion this is a really challenging class. I did go to tutoring for it, which helped a lot. He is very strict about attendance and thinks that coming to class should be your top priority. There are only two test the whole year but he gives out a ton of extra credit. The extra credit is defiantly not easy but it will really help your grade.
Classes are 100% lecture, quizzes almost every class, but on the first day he said "I'm just here for moral support," and mostly just makes jokes and cusses a lot. Went to him for help one time and was just told how poor of grades and how low of a chance I have at doing well on the midterm. Has more casual than psych-related conversations.
If you read, study and pay attention to the lectures, this class will be really easy. There isn't a big secret to succeed in this class and Dr. Gibbons will tell you the same. And worst case scenario, he gives a bunch of extra credit. His quizzes make you actually know the content rather than just memorizing it for a test. This class was my fav.
Dr. Gibbons is interesting. I did not enjoy his lectures because he talks very fast and can get off topic. You take a short quiz almost every class. The midterm and the Final are the only exams and they were all based on what he says not the material in the book. I suggest you print out the notes he provides and write down exactly what he says!
What an interesting character. Dr. Gibbons' lectures often go off topic into tangents about his life and family. Read if you want to, but the main purpose of this class is to rob your time. He cares deeply about his students but for an intro psych class there's way too much work. Seriously, good luck on his quizzes and exams. (Spring 2020)
If you are a freshman in college and taking his class your fall semester, you need to either drop his class ASAP or put your head down and do all the extra credit possible. His midterm and final are impossible. I earned over 40 points of extra credit in one semester. Do not take his class. He does not teach, & goes on random tangents during class.
-Quiz every class -Does not teach, goes off on random tangents -Earned over 40 points of extra credit in one semester DROP THE CLASS
The most amazing professor at CNU. He wants his students to learn and succeed so much, and is willing to do anything for his students to succeed. He is very accessible and is in his office very often, and always willing to meet with students. He makes you work for your grade, but you learn SO much with him, and hes always available.
Gibbons is a great guy, nobody can deny that. But for an intro-level psych class, he takes it way too seriously. This class is currently my hardest course. (Spring semester 2021) and I am not even a psychology major. Quizzes almost every class that are difficult, and not just memorization. HE makes sure you learn the content for the quizzes and tes
The worst professor I've ever had. It's not close. He is so bad that he made me want to drop out of school entirely. He does not teach at all in class and his quizzes (pretty much every class) and exams are absurdly hard. He's the type of professor that wants to prove that his class is hard so bad that he punishes the students for no reason.
Do not take this class. He makes you do every assignment multiple times and you always get a zero on your first try. If you are willing to work super hard you may learn a lot but it was not worth the stress for me. He spends the first 30 mins of class telling us how bad we are, and is mean 1 on 1. By far the worst class I've taken at CNU.
If you are a procrastinator this is NOT the class for you. If you stay on top of your work you will get an A in the class. Dr. Gibbons will go above and beyond to help you succeed. Just do your work and get help from your peers. There are also tons of extra credit opportunities offered throughout the semester so take advantage of them.
I genuinely cannot fathom how this man has above a 3.0 on here. He wastes time going off on tangents and makes the students remind him where he left off. This means you have to read the text in extreme detail because in all likelyhood he will not get to the information. He also moves at lighting speed in his lectures becayse of this. Do NOT take.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH GIBBONS HE ACTS LIKE IT IS NOT AN INTRO CLASS HE PURPOSELY MAKES THE QUIZZES EXTREMELY CONFUSING THE EXAMS ARE PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE AND JUST AS CONFUSING AS THE QUIZZES DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I WISH I KNEW THIS BEFORE CHOOSING THE CLASS DONT SAY I DIDNT WARN YOU. Peace and love :)
Do not take this professor! He blamed the class for the midterm average being a 62 rather than realizing maybe he just can't teach. He never makes sense during his lectures and goes off on extreme tangents and needs us the students to remind him what he's talking about. He is rude and sarcastic and I had to teach myself everything in order to pass.
Goes on long tangents and wastes time in class, then blames students for not knowing the information. He makes students memorize random paragraphs of information from the textbook that he calls "chants". He tells students to read from the textbook, but then doesn't tell you what chapters to read for each class.
Gibbons is easily the worst teacher I have ever had. He consistently spends 15 to 30 minutes out of his 50 minute class talking about his personal life with no consideration for the students paying for his class. He finds students in the class to scared to speak up for themselves and bullies them in front of the whole class, so if you are shy avoid
Dr. Gibbons is a great professor. As long as you read the chapters before class And listen during class, you will get a good grade. The test are tough but if you know the information well, you will do fine. He has a lot of office hours And is very understanding. He also gives a lot of extra credit that's super easy to do!!
The most annoying class I've had yet. His lectures are mostly filled with personal stories that he tries to tie in with the content, it's never executed well. His way of engaging the class with the content is giving quizzes, which he always ends up fixing because the questions given on the quiz aren't right. He also always goes over class time.
This class by far was the most hardest class I have ever taken and its an intro psychology course. Try to do all extra credit possible (it will help in the end trust me). His lectures go off topic all of the time and when you go to his office hours, hell pretty much tell you how you will fail his class.
He would go off on tangents which made it hard to actually listen and care about what he was saying. Also a group got caught cheating so he made the entire class do tests and quizzes on a lockdown server.
Gibbons is hilarious and a very fun professor but his psych 201 class is a disaster. You wont learn anything in class because he goes off on SO many tangents. Be prepared to learn all of the material outside of class and do A TON of work to pass. His quizzes are so confusing and unnecessarily difficult. Avoid this class if possible.
Dr. Gibbons obviously wants his students to learn; however, he kind of just talks about what he wants to during class time. The problem with that is he expects his students to be engaged the entire time. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, which helps because you should expect to take 1-2 quizzes a week. Actually read the textbook!
Dr. Gibbons is an extraordinarily confusing lecturer, so do the reading. He offers a TON of extra credit. Please do not take his course if you're not ready for a crapload of work if you want an A. Keep in contact with him throughout the year rather than waiting until the last second to do everything otherwise you will genuinely regret it.
Undoubtedly the worst experience of my college life. He is simply not a good professor, nor that well-meaning of a person. Do not take him under any circumstance because it is unnecessary stress for no reward. He belittles you instead of assisting you, he invalidates anything you think or feel, and is completely closed to anything but his own.
While he definitely goes on tangents, Gibbons has the fundamentals of a great teacher with an acute understanding of how to make the material stick over time. This is a gateway class, so it's harder than average no matter the teacher, but Gibbons wants you to pass, and he gives out a TON of extra credit. If you want to pass with an A, DO IT!!
One of the best professors I ever had, cares about his students! You have to stay on top of the work but if you do that you will succeed!
He is a great professor and gives you everything you need to get an A in the class but it is a lot of reading and memorization.
Extremely hilarious teacher that cares about every one of his students. He works around your schedule to make sure that you understand information even if you are sick and miss class. Recites information constantly to reinforce information into your brain to prepare for pop quizzes. This is 100% a class where you have to put in the work to do well.
Psych 201 with Gibbons is definitely not the easiest course, but if your willing to put in a work and do the extra credit, an A is definitely doable. Gibbons is hilarious and wants you too succeed. 2 points daily for attendance, 10 point quizzes 2 times a week. Midterm and Final each worth 100 pts. Probably no joke around 100pts extra credit. DO IT
Gibbons comes across as a hard class because he has the "you get as much as you're willing to put in mindset". If you really want to learn he's great, dont expect easy A. You HAVE to read or at least skim the textbook before class but you walk away prepared for your future psych classes. He also offers a ton of extra credit people just don't do it
Do NOT take this class. Gibbons is an incredibly arrogant, narcissistic man who looks down on his students. He spends over half the class period rambling and then gets mad when we don't know how to do our work. I don't understand the good ratings on here. Work hard and yes you will probably get a good grade, but it's not worth the stress and tears.
Gibbons is one of my favorite professors at CNU. He made me love psychology more than I already did and his jokes/story's made it just and easy class to go to. He does give a ton of reading but really sets you up for an A. He also will call you out but not in a mean way.
Gibbons lectures all class and just expects you to know what he's talking about. He's a nice guy and take advantage of office hours. A 5 question quiz almost every class. You need to do the readings and study a LOT. 50 question multi choice midterm & final. Take advantage of extra credit.
Not as bad as expected, he's nice and cares abt psych a lot. Readings for each class, student-led lectures, daily quizes. Biggest thing to know: he lets you turn in any assignment until you get the grade you want (but you start w a low grade and have to build it up). LOTS of work, but stick with it and get an A. + many EC opportunities.
Gibbons is a fun professor, but when it comes to learning the material you are almost entirely on your own. Expected to teach yourself the material by reading the book. He will briefly go over them but the majority of class is side stories. The material is hard, he does give extra credit opportunities. Also talks quickly so its hard to keep up.
Gibbons is a wonderful professor and makes the class easy to go to. Expect about two five-question quizzes a week based on what he has talked about in the last and current class as well as the readings that reinforce it. Love this guy but his tests are difficult. 50 questions on mid-term and final all multiple choice. Plenty of extra credit.
I think this guy deep down knows that Psychology is just a bunch of Hocus Pocus so he tries to make up for it by being the worst professor at CNU. He has gotta leave his mark somehow.
He is Hilarious in a bad way....
rip. Parents gonna make me drop out of college after this.
He does not really teach. He kind of just leaves it up to the student to learn on their own which is frustrating. I could get the same experience with an online college without the frustrations this guy brings :(. The good reviews on here are misleading I wish I would have known.
Good amount of reading, but explains topics well in lectures. A lot of opportunities for EC to change your grade. Overall, great teacher.
Amazing professor. He is so funny and relates all the material to real life examples, which help with learning and understanding the material. He seems intimidating at first, but really just wants you to do well and pass the class. So much extra credit is offered and his quizzes prepare you so well for the exams. Overall, great professor.
Gibbons is strictly a lecturer, but he doesn't talk about the material hardly at all, mostly just discusses random stuff. U WILL HAVE TO BE SELF TAUGHT. He does offer a bunch of extra credit & lets you read over your final. I would recommend going to tutoring & office hours often for this class bc teaching yourself everything takes a LOT of time.
Gibbons just yaps the whole class time about his past experiences, trying to correlate them to the material being taught. This is an ineffective way of teaching because way too many things are going on at once. Taking notes is pointless in his class due to his tangents every 5 minutes. Don't take gibbons unless you want to fail
He is quite interesting. I did not enjoy the class very much. I am a visual learner and note taker -- I like powerpoint and engaging in class, and if you are like me, this class is not for you. You are expected to teach yourself the lesson for the day before class and do review in class. We have quizzes every class and there is a ton to read.
Not a psych major; took this class for AIWT. It's a lot of reading and studying for a class that is not your major, BUT he offers a ton of extra credit. I did all of the EC and could pass with an A, even if I got a 0/100 on the final. Quizzes every class, but as long as you do the readings the quizzes are fine. Would only take prof again for the EC
Dr. Gibbons is a great professor and gives a lot of extra credit to help his students succeed. He is always available to help students outside of class and I learned a lot. He gives a lot of quizzes, but if you pay attention and take notes it is a pretty easy class.
Not always very clear on the expectations of the class but after a few weeks you get the hang of it. Just pay attention in lecture (you don't really need to read the textbook...) and GO TO OFFICE HOURS because he likes seeing that you're putting in an effort. Gibbons gets a bad rep but he is not a horrible professor if you just try.
If you put in the work you will not fail his class. If you show up and do the extra credit he offers you will even get a good grade, I got a D and C on my midterm and final and still got an A- in his class, he makes an effort to know everyone in his class and will help you understand concepts after class in his office hours
Professor Gibbons is very fun and loves to randomly trauma dump 😭He genuinely cares about his students and wants to work with them to get them good grades. As a person, he is amazing. As a teacher... not the easiest. He expects you to teach yourself all the material before class and treat class as kind of a "review." Quizzes most classes.
Good professor, always available if you need any help at all. Be prepared to take notes and read the textbook before you get to each class. You will take a quiz almost every class, with 5 multiple-choice questions. They're not hard if you pay attention in class. Overall he's a great guy and this wasn't a bad class. Would recommend.
Dr. Gibbons is knowledgeable in his field, but his teaching style made it difficult to stay engaged with the material. While he did try to make the class interesting at times, it often felt like he was more interested in talking about unrelated topics than in focusing on the course material.
Just... don't. Dr. Gibbons is knowledgeable but just not the best teacher. He focuses on memorization over comprehension so you have the order of the information but not what it really means. He can also make odd comments during class/office hours that make students uncomfortable, he's not a bad guy, just doesn't think before he speaks.
Gibbons would never give me any credit on assignments unless I got essentially a perfect score on them and made no mistakes. I had to redo many assignments up to almost ten times, and I still never received a grade above a zero for any of these assignments. This caused me much psychological distress and caused me to have major self-esteem issues.
Gibbons isn't a bad teacher; he just makes his students work. You have to have done the readings before every class since there are quizzes almost every class, so be prepared! He likes to stump his students with the wording of the questions! Other than that, he is pretty chill and easy to talk to if you have any issues.
This is my second class with Dr. Gibbons, and although he is tough on his students, he truly is the best prof. you could possibly take! He genuinely cares about his students and pushes you to do your best work. There is a lot of work in this class, but you get unlimited submissions and great feedback to get a 100 on every assignment. A great guy!
Dr. Gibbons will warn you about the amount of work in the beginning of the semester. If you take this class with him, I suggest you follow his warnings and do work early if you don't want to be stressed like me by the end of the semester. I assume the intensity of the classes he teaches is to prepare students for graduate school.
Dr. Gibbons is a reverse classroom style he gives you an outline and makes you read the textbook before every class. He will give you a quiz every class and his exams are hard. His exams and quizzes are stated as,” which of the following is true/not true.” He is a talker so if you don't like that wouldn't recommend
His course has so much material. He goes over every term for about 15 seconds and attaches it to his past experiences. He expects everyone to spend at least 30 minutes every day reading the material before class. He gives free grades for showing up every day, but they are put there to even out the near-impossible test scores.
Dr.Gibbons class was super difficult but he knew it and provided tons of extra credit. I haven't done great on the exams but as of right now I still have an A. He basically gives you free points just for showing up and definitely cares about his students. I am definitely going to take one of his classes again. He talks a lot though so be ready.
Professor Gibbons is a good professor BUT his exams are very difficult. You will pass the class because he offers many extra credit opportunities and gives helpful feed back on what you did wrong on his exams. Expect your first exam to be low just because of the unusual question style he uses for his exams hes good, but I am happy to be done.
I loved Professor Gibbons class! It is a LOT of material, but he makes the lectures very interesting. He gives so many extra credit opportunities to make up for not doing so well on the exams. The tests are complex, but if you read the textbook and take notes before the lectures, it makes it so much easier to understand and follow his lectures.
