Unorganized teaching method. Does not prepare you for tests. Seems to be upset when class suceeds because the first test was resonabley easy if you paid attention and class average was in the 80's so the next test he make near impossible, and doesn't take doctor's or med. excuses.
The tests were pretty easy. He gives pop quizzes that are easy if you have payed attention to all the lectures.
Dr. Hankins is the worst teacher I've had since I've been at Tech (I'm a senior). He always holds class late, his lectures are somewhat unorganized, he isn't very helpful, and he is SO anal when he grades his tests. He made my quarter miserable.
He will put you to sleep with his lectures and he makes the tests harder if you do good on the first one. You will NEVER get out of class early! AND He takes roll at the end of class making you stay later.
I liked Dr. Hankins. He was reasonably thorough in his lectures, and the tests never contained material that wasn't covered or assigned as extra reading. My only problem with the class was that it was supposed to go to A.D. 1500, and we barely made it to 1000, but Hankins can't be blamed for that.
dr. hankins is a good teacher. he knows what he is talking about and is very detailed in his lectures. his test are fairly easy if you've payed attention and gives pop quizes that add up to a test grade and lets you drop the lowest one. read over your notes before class and you'll be fine.
BOOOOORRRRIIINNNGGG! ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
His classes are really boring. He holds you for class even on test days. He makes his tests difficult. Doesn't cover some of the material that is on tests.
I'm going to get a B in this class that SHOULD be an A. Hankins' tests are lame. It's an insanely boring class, and even if you manage to take down EVERY note like I did, you'll still have to face the inevitable fact that the test has far too many questions that do not pertain to the lecture notes.
terrible teacher. do not take him. he is incredibly unfair and boring. his tests ask completely random things (ie: ancient mesopotamian's favorite breakfast, ha!) tests are too hard for a 100 level class. he is one of those teachers who thinks you should know as much as he does about the subject

BORING! He will put you to sleep. Horrible teacher. He ALWAYS keeps you in class the whole time--even on test days. His tests are not too difficult if you pay attention in class, but he is so boring that it is EXTREMELY difficult to pay attention. Good luck if you take him!
I liked Dr. Hankins. He's hard, but fair. He really knows his stuff, and obviously likes talking about history, which is cool.
the man really knows his history, but he is so boring. i have a public sleeping phobia, but i fell asleep in his class almost day we met. it was ridiculous.
booooring!
he's a good teacher, he knows what he is talken about and presents his thoughts clear. easy to take notes and if you have any questions he will gladly answer them. he was interesting to listen to. go to class and take notes and you will do fine. not big on dates, but he does like you to know people.

Had Hankins my 1st quarter here, which admittedly, was his first quarter teaching as well. Still, the man drove me insane! He teaches things that contradict the sections he assigns to read in the book. And when asked in class did not know the Qua'ran was the un-Americanized spelling for the Koran. Plus his tests are asinine and his class is boring!
The professor is very knowledgeable, but the time period doesn't allow the class a full respect of that said knowledge. I am very happy that I was in his class, because he focused on the effects of history to the people, and the time. I would love to take another course under his direction anyday. I recommend him very highly to anyone whi asks.
He knows his stuff but it seems that he isn't excited about it. His class is very boring you will take notes for the whole class period then everynow and then he will have a pop quiz. Test are kind of easy but he takes attendance at the end.
He's a pretty good history teacher (i'm a hist major) but he can tend to get alittle boring at times. His tests are fairly easy and he has a quiz now and then that he usually gives fair warning of. overall one of the better history teachers i've had.
Dr. Hankins talks alot, no need for a book, just the first test because there is a map. Must be able to take notes, and be in class because he gives random quizes that total to a 100 point test grade. It's best to bring a tape recorder.
I would have had an A were it not for the pop quizzes he gives. Dont forget to study for them. Otherwise it was interesting stuff and the tests werent too bad.
Kind of looks like Voldemort before his face was fully developed. BUT! DOnt hold this against him. He's pretty cool. Study for tests at subway. You will do good.
B/c he talks in a monotone voice the entire class period, its hard to decipher whats important to write down and whats just rambling. He lectures on WAY more material than is on his tests which are easy mult. choice. I think he only has those pop quizes b/c he knows everyone would skip class and just get the notes from someone else if he didnt.
Im making A's on all the tests, but those quizzes have me barely making a B. The only reason the quizzes are there is to make you show up. He is the smartest history teacher, but dont take him early in the morning bc he will put you to sleep.
Dr. Hankins is very condescending toward his students. He really isn't very nice, but he is a pretty good history teacher. His class is fairly easy, all questions on the tests come straight from his lectures. No need for a book.
Worst teacher i have ever had..he is really terrible ..his pop quiz which has class average of 50..or so constitute 25% of the overall grade.... i got overall average of 79 and still got C on this class because of his pop quiz..i don't recommend anybody his class...good luck for yall future..
Quizzes are a PAIN and usually difficult. Test are usually easy however the questions are very vague and ambiguous if you're used to detailed tests. Study lists of things. If he repeats something learn it. If you have questions go by his office and ask. The man loves to eat candy in lectures, and you need to be IN CLASS because he checks twice.
Long and boring class
This man knows history, big time. This subject can be pretty boring, I think he did a great job teaching it in a view that made it more interesting. He really is a nice man but he doesn't like idiots, he likes intelligent, respectfull students. His Quizes R Brutal, made A's on all the test and barley got a B. Dont waste $ on a Book. TAKE NOTES!
If you write pretty well and take his advise on your writing, you should do just fine. The midterm was a series of essays, which, if you study, are not bad. He accepted the final research paper early, "graded" it, and returned it before it was actually due which enabled us to correct our mistakes before turning it in for a grade.
terrible teacher..bad grading style..makes subject boring..quizzes are difficult, test are super difficult, not helpful..doesn't curve even a few points..don't take his class unless you wanna make "F" in history...he is probably most difficult history teacher at louisiana tech..
RUN!!!! do NOT purchase book...will not ever use it...i love history....he teaches so boring and too deep even if u take good notes they wont help...dont take this class unless u want a F...i got a C barely...oh and the quizzes...just close ur eyes and guess..u will have a better chance of passing it...DoNT TAKE HIM
A good test grade relies on good notes. Test don't take much information from the book. Going to class is a must, because notes are VERY important.
Test are Hard! You must take good notes or record classes. The book is not used at all. Takes joy in students failing. He must hate his life.
RUN!!! Do not take him you will not pass with higher than a C unless you dedicate your life to the class. His tests are hard to comprehend and his quizzes are all guesswork.
mother of god please don't take his class, history was my favorite class before i was put in his. He's helpful but only to an extent, his quizzes and tests are impossible...DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! This guy is terrible! He is a not helpful AT ALL, his quizes are hard, and I could never figure out where he got his test questions from. If you are taking prepare to drop the class!!!
Turn around and run FAST! Stay as far away as you can. This is the craziest/hardest class I've ever had. Tests & quizzes are impossible. Test questions hardly seem to relate to the notes you take--much less will your notes answer the questions. Do not take this class if you really want to pass. It's terrible.
I am a good student. i attend every class unless i am horribly sick, i take very detailed notes, and i study ALOT. but this teacher was extremely RUDE,disrespectful, and wanted the students to fail. He did not care if we learned the material. Alot of his test questions we hadn't even covered in the lectures yet.He treats the students as idiots.
...I felt like I was in trouble every day I walked in class. He was really nice during office hours though. I got a B in the class...but I WORKED for that B. Great guy outside of class...but...if you are not a history major AND have, want, or wish to maintain a good and HIGH GPA...avoid his class at all costs.
if you like history stay away from this class as he will make you hate it. the quiz grade average is 50% and not enough time is given on them. you are probably given about 2 minutes to answer 5 questions that are not worded clearly. the exams are not too bad as long as you read the questions thoroughly.
If you asked me, I'd tell you to avoid taking Hankns. He gives random quizzes throughout the quarter. Tests are based off of his personal notes. Unless he runs out of time, you won't use the textbook. He will help students outside of class, but IN CLASS...you better bring a tape recorder. I barely scrapped by with a C. Most other students dropped.
He is a History teacher that VOLUNTEERED to teach the University seminar. If you are taking him for History or University Seminar DONT DO IT! He is rude, mean, and UNFAIR. He is an egotistical person that INSIST you call him -Dr.- He cant teach for crap and he doesn't have a clue. he needs to retire.
Hankins is difficult, no way of getting around that. He lecture's the whole class period, but does give a ten minute break. His tests are relatively easy, if you've taken good notes. He gives an essay on every test, but tells you what it is going to be on before hand. His quizzes are difficult, they usually cover the reading in addition to notes.
DO NOT TAKE... unless your absolute love history or love a challenge. I worked my butt off in this class and got a C. He lectures the WHOLE time, minus a 5-10 min break. Didn't use the book once, save your money. Has increadibly hard multiple choice on tests from his lectures. The quizes hurt bad, 5 MC usually from the extra readings. Do not take!!
I don't understand the complaints about him. I think maybe he's mellowed a tad. The class is hard for sure, and he is incredibly cold and exact (almost machine-like), but he's very very nice outside of class and will help you. I think he just gets fed up with people who aren't willing to try. I'd say he's moderately difficult by history standards
Talks quickly. Repeats nothing. Ignores raised hands. Hard quizzes on material he might not cover, worth 20 points. No make-ups for ANYTHING except univ. excuses; not even obituaries. Seating chart. Hates when you finish quizzes early. HARD TO KEEP UP WITH. tests mediocre, 30 point essay included. Not impossible class, but i recommend a recorder.
OMG! Can we say HARD! I never like history and after taking him, I absolutely HATE it! I passed his class with a C and still do not know how. He does not use the book and you have all this extra reading and he gives random quizzes that you are thinking, where did this come from?? Please try to take someone else if you can!!
Hankins is the most pretentious, callous, and stringent professor in the history department. Avoid his classes. About 40 percent of his students drop anyway, so save yourself the trouble. He will only be helpful if you come to him in total ignorance feeding his ego.
Probably the worst "English speaking" teacher i've ever had!
........
Horrible, horrible, horrible! I refuse to take his class again. I've studied for a test for over 12 hours, and still failed. He's also extremely rude. I had the swine flu and missed a pop quiz. I couldn't make it up because he didn't approve.
Bring a tape recorder to class becuase it is almost impossible to take notes by hand in his class. He talks without stop and barely repeats himself. Does not use the book at all. His tests are strcictly based on the notes. He is emotionless when lecturing and barely cracks a smile. He gives random quizzes, mostly on Mondays though for me I noticed.
Althoug most people have rated Hankins low. I didnt consider him to be THAT bad. I also had the swine flu but I showed him an excuse and I made up the quiz I missed. He is spot on in what he lectures. Basically Hankins is this.... If you want a good history prof and you dont mind a challenge then go with Hankins. Tests are hard but passable.
I took this guy for university seminar. He's a complete jerk. He takes this class way too seriously. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Big lecturer. Just attend class and take good notes. Read all aside readings for the quizzes.
AWESOME teacher. He was extremely helpful and made class interesting. The "pop-quizzes" were the easiest part of the class, the questions were straight from the notes and additional readings. I wound up with a 98 in the class and didn't even take one of the quizzes. Highly recommend him to anyone taking HIST 102. I can't wait to take him again.
DO NOT TAKE ~ It's hard. He didn't have outline. Just lectures, but you cannot take all the notes. And exams have eassay. so bad~
He is very hard...Very hard questions and quiz..boring quizzed
I'm a history major so I already had interest in the subject but I loved this class! He is so helpful! If you want an easy class this is not it but if you like english history then this is an awesome class.
Extremely hard! All he did was lecture and you had to decide what was important, he didn't tell you. Test questions were confusing because the right answer didn't seem like it would be right. Only 3 tests and 5 quizzes, so you HAVE to do good on everything. If you end up taking him you have to study EVERYDAY! If you have the choice, DON'T TAKE HIM!
Do not take him, if you have the choice. His expectations of students are unrealistic - it is impossible to memorize everything he tests you on without outlines, Powerpoints, etc (which of course he does not use). Take another prof for this general requirement; it was my lowest grade this quarter when it shouldn't have been.
slept so much in this class. classic history professor: old white male. if you can stay awake and catch the important points he goes over, you'll do fine.
I thought he was easy, other's I know complained about how hard he was. He tells you what his essay questions are going to be and everything else he seemed to touch base on in class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY IF YOU DONT LIKE ENGLISH OR HISTORY! He expects you to read his mind, when writing your book reviews and your 10 page term paper. Im a history major and have never made below a B in any history class, DO NOT TAKE HIM! Too many books, too few tests and one LARGE research paper! The most unrealistic teacher ever
Sooo hard to stay awake in this class
It is not an easy class to pass. His almost all questions has statements such as "did all of this except". He is a good teacher but he doesn't understand student problems in coping his lecture materials. He goes over a topic once and if you miss it, it's gone. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
HORRIBLE. . . . AVOID LIKE THE BLACK PLAGUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avoid at all costs!!! Lectures are extremely boring and he moves so fast. His tests are difficult to understand and are never straight forward. Ruined my 4.0
He moves through his lectures extremely fast, and it's hard to take good notes of what is important . There is no power point or review for exams. His test questions are misleading , and always have an essay question !
If you're a terrible student or struggled throughout high school, don't sign up for Hankins. For a Hankins class, you should already know what you're about, have decent study skills/ a system, and understand that college isn't for slackers. Talking to Hankins during his office hours was most helpful because it shows initiative on your part.
Horrible Class and professor. Does not explain the material well at all and moves through too much too quickly. I would recommend taking anyone but him for history of any kind.
His lectures are long but he knows his stuff and is interesting.
Such a helpful and wonderful Prof! If you get to know him and take advantage of his time, he will absolutely help you. The lectures are full of info that will be on the test so note taking is a must, but they are always interesting and full of amazing facts. Such an interesting and fun class to take with such a cool professor.
This class is only for lovers of history. If you do not care for history, do not take this class. I loved his class, but I am reluctant to recommend him to friends because they probably won't like him like I do. If you pay attention and take notes and study just a little, it is easy to be successful in this class. Only complaint is that he is quiet
I would definitely not take this professor again. He is very uninteresting and speaks monotone from the very beginning of class up until the very last second. Only 6 quizzes, 4 exams, he drops the lowest quiz grade. Class is ok, quizzes are ok, test are short but he's unclear. The ONE time I opened the text book was for a map on a quiz.
Great lecturer- gives interesting, less often presented lens to view world history. Fun class, just listen and take notes as test questions come straight from lectures. Minimal reading but browsing the book can help. Gotta attend, why skip? It's like watching history channel.
Everyone had been telling me a bad stuff about him how boring he is, how though exams are.. I was scared but when I took his class it was actually pretty good. It is sometimes boring Bc he just talks, he gives unexpected quizzes, gives a readings but his exams weren't that hard at all. Be prepared for a lot of EXCEPT questions.. Really nice guy.
Tests are tough. You won't use your book AT ALL. Talks for 50 minutes straight, 10 minute break, 50 minute lecture again. No words powerpoint, just pictures of maps and historical figures. Awful class. Find another professor.
One of the hardest classes I've taken, but seriously one of the best history professors I've ever had. I liked him so much I got him to write me a letter of rec just for working so hard and improving so much in his class. Participate in discussions or you're done.
Powerpoints have no information just the topic and pictures, so you have to come to class and take notes. Tests aren't too bad at all as long as you pay attention during lectures, but lectures are long and boring. You can use the textbook, but as long as you take notes and study those you don't really need to.
Takes his class WAY too seriously, he treats students like we are history majors, wanting us to read the textbook & giving an essay on every test. He's hard for no reason. Just take someone else, but if you have the misfortune of taking him, prepare for the multiple choice ?'s to ask u something like "all these things happened EXCEPT.."
If you take this class, DO NOT take the 8am. You will fall asleep every time. Also, make sure you take good notes and read over them everyday. CHECK MOODLE for articles because you will be quizzed on them! Pay attention to what he's saying, and study study study for the exams!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! It's very boring and he doesn't talk very loud. Everyday he will give a 2 hour or so lecture and he will bore you out of your mind! His test are also very hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!
His class is really boring and he wears the same outfit everyday. His assistants do everything for him but he acts like he's the one doing all the work. His test and quizzes only consist of "all of the following except..." questions and all the answers are correct you just have to figure which one is the most correct. He's also very rude sometimes
Everything on the tests is in the lectures, just listen hard and take good notes. Only real problems are that he speaks quietly and doesn't use a mic, and there's a seating chart, you'll probably be crammed in between a bunch of people.
I don't care for Hankins at all. He is very monotone, his lectures are very long, and I got the impression that he didn't really care about any of the kids he was teaching.
Clearly the other reviewers are used to being babied. Dr. Hankins is one of the best professors at Tech. I enjoy his conversations and lectures. Yes, he is slightly mono-toned, but, who isn't. Sometimes he can get a bit winded, but the information is pure gold. I recommend him over a few other professors in the History Department.
This class was honestly one of the harder ones I've taken at tech, but it was really worth it. If you're not interested in the material, though, I wouldn't recommend taking his classes; he doesn't do powerpoints or write things down so it can get kinda long. He is a very nice guy and has interesting things to say. The reading/writing is killer tho
He is awful. Literally makes you have a sitting chart.. umm no we are in college. His test are super hard. He keeps you the whole 2 hours and be ready for pop quizzes. Do not take him!!
Never take this class if you're looking for leniency on turn in times. Everything is only open for 24 hrs so better stay on top of everything. Definitely not a class to take if you have a heavy work schedule (avg. 50 hr work week for me). Also don't except to have a good idea of your grade. Final is next week and I know 2/5 grades, glorious...
Do not take him unless you absolutely have to! He is a terrible monotone professor.
