The class is not easy but he is very throroguh and you come away with a good understanding of the figure. It is not the place for students who are spoiled about not getting things done or missing class and expecting to be fussed over.

very unhelpful.very unclear

I loved his classes. He is very helpful in getting the essence of the figure. I learned a lot about the figure from his classes. Highly recommended. Just work hard, which should go without saying.
I put a lot in, for a lame head trip and walked away broke. Scad is a scam
Beautiful person on the inside. gave me self esteem when I couldn't draw.
Great prof. If you want to learn something about drawing he is a good prof. to take. If you think you know how to draw and don't want to learn don't take him. He is all about drawing. I learned a lot from him.

He is a hard teacher that will really push you, but he really helped me with my form and proportion. Very well worth all of the sleepless nights.
This was not my forte.. however he pushed me and was very good at teaching.. he had TONS of passion and was very enjoyable to work with. I'd say is probably one of the best teachers at the school

Awesome class! My life drawing skills improved vastly!
Markowsky helped me a lot with my drawing skills. In-class critics were very helpful. HW was minor, most of your time was spent on in-class projects, which became hw if you didn't finish in class. Very good teacher, with a great attitude towards teaching, and life in general, especially at 9am. take his class.
He's a great guy and teacher and he tries to keep the class fun. He plays music when you're drawing. He's really easy to talk to and it's an ejnoyable class. (Drawing I)
Markowsky was a great professor! I have taken many drawing and painting classes over the years, but I feel I have learned more in 10 weeks from him than most of my other classes.
He is a good professor who tries to grade everyone on a skill based level although it is rather difficult to get an A...B is acheivable. Helps everyone with drawings and for the final you have a choice of different still lifes of varying degrees of difficulty.
Fun and funny. Great personality, and great assignments. You don't need to be the best artist in the class to get an A, since he grades based on your own personal improvement throughout the course.
Mostly helpful...very friendly and has good sense of humor! Sometimes does not understand where those who have no drawing experience are coming from, but tries his best to help. Sometimes gets frustrated with students getting frustrated. Overall, I was very pleased with his teaching
A great teacher. Really interested in helping student. Very constructive with course work help. I really felt i improved after his class. great sense of humor too, fun to talk and listen to. class is a light atmosphere but very geared towards learning. some say he was hard, but their work got better after his class. take him!
ONLINE: he is extremely organized and has copious examples and videos to teach. encourages discussion and criticism. grades on personal improvement. The most amazing about Markowsky: HE TEACHES YOU TO DRAW!!! defiantly a shocker. i would recommend this class online or not. With online you just don't have to waste time with class work!!
Markowsky is incredibly talented and knowledgeable. He does demos at the beginning of class using a model, and is always helpful and encouraging. I would recommend him to everyone, even lacking "talent" or interest in this class. He's also very easy going and just all around a great professor!
I have no idea what everyone else is talking about. Jeff is the hardest/most stringent grader i have ever had. I'm all for keepin A rare but give at least 1 out. From day 1 i knew there was something i didnt like about this guy just couldnt pin pt it. I'm an excellent drawer/student n even w/ me doing twice the number assigned for hw he only gave 9
Markowsky is a wonderful teacher. His classes are so laid back they're almost like your own personal zen drawing time. He's extremely knowledgeable and very willing to help. He will challenge the way you draw and you will grow from it, if you open yourself to learn.
Fantastic prof. I cant draw what-so-ever. But he literally teaches you how to draw using the right concepts and with understandable lessons. 110% recommend him! Has a good sense of humor as well. Before this class I hated drawing. Now, I'm can honestly say I somewhat enjoy it... For real. This class will be worth your money.
Markowsky is great! I couldn't draw at all and he taught me step-by-step. I would highly recommend him to anyone
Great teacher, easy projects and a relaxed class atmosphere. i would have to say one of my easiest classes i have taken yet. Jeff is very laid back and a really nice guy
Markowsky's a great prof. He is patient, encouraging and an awesome teacher. Classes are really laid back cos the focus is on personal learning and development and he does just that. great for different levels of drawers. He pinpoints areas to improve and walks around every class to help you. Highly recommended.
Prof. Markowsky is helpful, approachable, and a great artist. If you're having difficulty in his class, he will sit down and work with you on what you need help with. He always gives plenty of time for assignments, and as much feedback as you need. Probably the best art instructor I've ever had in my life.
drawing2online:WORST teacher Ive EVER had! Ive had all A's at SCAD. Somehow I went from an A in drawing 1 to a C in drawing 2! Never returned calls or emails! Class average was a 66! Rethink taking this class if you don't want to be screwed over! He was nice when I sucked up, but then turned around and gave me a C after I followed his directions!
He was a great teacher all around. Especially for online students. I was frustrated at first b/c I didn't know what he wanted! He'd say good drawings were bad and bad drawings were good. He's the pro though. Plan on spending A LOT of time on your drawings. The shortest being 6 hours all the way up to 15 hours. He'll teach you how to draw.
e-learning course. Awesome teacher!
Great online teacher, with very clear directions. Tone of class discussions was positive and constructive. My work improved by leaps and bounds. His points to students were objective and valid. Worth the money.
I took his Drawing I class online. I had a good prior experience with drawing, but still I learned a lot from him. Assignments were not only technical but fun as well, and he is excellent with communication. E-mails were always prompt, directions were clear, and he was always willing to help. Office hours were extremely helpful on Connect. :-)
Markowsky is very laid back/understanding, except we couldn't listen to iPod's while working. His projects are good and he gives you room to be creative. I came out with at least 4 of my best drawings which are all in my portfolio now. He gives great advice, it just takes awhile to sink in; make sure it doesn't just go in one ear and out the other.
This professor is kind of difficult when it comes to grading. He is not an easy A. But he is just another professor at SCAD that wants his students to be pushed to the next level. I really loved his teaching style though. He is very understanding. I got an A!
A large course load but can maintain if you keep a planner. Lessons are constructed fine. But Instructor is inconsistent with grading. Tends to favor some students over others. Having taken this class I would not feel comfortable recommending him.
wonderful guy.... he gives little work and but he love gesture.....
Quirky Canadian guy who tells corny jokes. I had no drawing experience and I succeeded him. Getting an A isn't easy but it's possible. He grades based on your progress. Very helpful, but you have to put the work in and show that your trying. Gives lots of extra help sessions. You'll spend lots of time drawing, but he's there every step of the way.
Took Drawing online. Difficult to do anyway, but this was not too bad. He is very helpful and will tell you what you should do. He is a tough grader, but honest and fair. He is very engaging for an online class. No tests, just projects and a couple writing things.
I took the online class, and I would not recommend it to anyone. If drawing is not your major then prepare not to do well in this class. The class is not easy and you will be drawing everyday.
Complete skeptic going in. An excellent instructor! I took this course onlineâ??very tough, but Prof. M is great at handling the lessons online. Make use of his weekly virtual office hour meetingsâ??whether you need it or not. He gives honest, insightful feedback, and grades fairly. Not an easy A, but you'll learn a great deal if you make the effort.
I took Markowsky for figure drawing and the class was so great! It was definitely not easy but I learned tons. Markowsky is very helpful and understanding, and seems to really enjoy teaching students. Work hard and you will do fine and learn a whole lot too. Expect to sometimes get surprise sketchbook assignments.
Make sure you are inteesed in drawing and know how to draw prior taking his class. He wasn't really helping anyone in my class and if you are a beginner, you need to spend all of your weekends in anderson and hopefully you will get a B. Tho he is good, out going professor
prof mark provides lots of good feedback and opportunities for peer review. frankly, i think he is more patient than many students deserve! i don't know how he doesn't tire of telling a class the same things over and over again. it's a heavy workload, but if you pay attention and do the work, you'll learn a lot--and maybe even earn an A.
Markowsky was great! I HATED charcoal at the beginning, but now I like it. I can really see improvement in my work, as well. Markowsky is friendly and easy to approach. He doesn't choose favorites, and he constantly makes sure everyone is doing ok. He doesn't take something you didn't put effort into. Just do your best and he'll be there for you!
Amazing professor, extremely helpful, very clear, really learned a lot that really helped me out down the line. He knows what he is talkin bout, is very good, is very organized, and is a little difficult but it keeps you on your game in my experience. Expects you to draw in your sketchbook which I would recommend doing often as it will be graded.
Wonderful professor! He helps everyone individually and gives fair and insightful critiques. I learned a ton about anatomy and value in his class.
Hands down, BEST professor at SCAD. He is enthusiastic and really gets to know his students. Happy-go-lucky-guy. He thinks the world of his students. He's a wonderful person and definitely the type of person that was meant to be a teacher/mentor. His class is really enjoyable and he literally makes drawing fun! He really utilizes blackboard.
I have had many professors by now and I can honestly say that he is the BEST professor I''ve had thus far. If more teachers could teach like him school would get a new name. He''s amazing. Take his class
Whatever grade you get on your 1st project is the same as on the rest of the projects and final grade. There's no extra credit offered so it's almost impossible to improve that grade. From the start he decides whether you are an A, B or C etc. student and that's were you'll stay. After brief demo & lecture you teach your self. Hardwork for a B.
. He explained concepts i had struggled with on my own clearly and was willing to tell you where you were going wrong on your drawing. overall he's a cool guy who's willing to joke around with his students.
He's amazing! He's perfect professor I've ever met, he's really helpful and humorous. His class is always joyful and I learned lots of drawing and I could enjoy his class even it was my first drawing class in my life. Also, he is very caring, he re-assess student's work so it makes us passionate for our work.
As someone who doesn't necessarily draw for their major, I found this class incredibly difficult. Markowsky is an amazing guy and I truly improved more than I ever thought I could. But I was spending 7 hours on the weekends at Anderson on drawings, only to receive an 83. He doesn't take progress into consideration so you have to already be good.
I had him for an online class. He's a great teacher; he was overall very helpful and gave great feedback on projects. I found this class very difficult because I had not previously had any drawing experience so be prepared for that. Your grade depends on the amount of time and effort you put into your drawings.
Markowsky is a great teacher but a tough one. He pushes you to do your best work and expects a lot out of you. It helps to be good drawer from the start, but your work will improve either way. Lots of still lives and weekend help sessions. He wrote the online textbook himself. Not easy but very rewarding!
he's very chill and very helpful without making you feel too bad about it, as long as you do your work on time andfocus on completing projects and your sketchbook he's a really great dude. He was also kind enough to give me a personal critique on one of my projects when I was having really bad anxiety from being late, which I am thankful for.
Isn't happy unless you draw in a "style" he likes. Is very vague on how to make improvements. Isn't specific about assignments either. Has favourites in a not so nice way. Just wasn't comfortable working with him. Can be sarcastic in a mean way. Not to me but I've seen it happen to others.
Amazing professor! makes you work for it. Even if you believe if your work is satisfactory, He challenges you to rethink that and forces you to be better even when it feels frustrating. WORTH IT. He cares and wants to prepare you for the workforce which is very competitive and challenging! likes to talk about films and music too!
Great guy, great class! Always makes an effort to get to know the students and makes dad jokes occasionally.
Markowsky is definitely a character; the guy should have gone into stand-up. As a drawing professor however, I felt that his teaching style did not work for me. He's always there to help and my final turned out amazing. Markowsky's class is great for beginners as some of my friends who couldn't draw said that they benefited from him.
Hes nice but I think I wouldve got a lot more out of this class if Id taken it in person. I had very high expectations bc of all the good reviews. His recorded crits are really good but I wish we got short comments and feedback more often throughout the week so I could avoid mistakes before grading.
A wonderful experience, even for an 8pm class. Always energetic and motivational. You can tell he knows what hes talking about.
Him for an 8pm made it actually enjoyable. Fun, energetic, passionate guy. Quite a Dad figure and cracks jokes. Actually cares about his students (he fought for our blue bus rights at 11pm). Very chill. Did observational drawings and he was helpful in feedback and picking out details. Great demos/lectures. Literally the BEST. Would have again!
Hes the best professor I have had in my freshman year
Prof. Markowsky is great. He puts a lot of time into explaining our grades. His assignments are abundant and require a lot of time and effort, so I wouldn't recommend taking his classes with any other art studio classes because you may be short for time. Don't expect an easy grade, but if you complete everything properly you will learn a lot.
Elearning course was very difficult, and he would often change deadlines from what the course states. Be prepared to be drawing anywhere from 6-15 hours a week. I felt like I improved so much from his teaching although my grades didn't show it. Very challenging to maintain a good grade.
hes the best ever!!!!!!!!
Professor Markowsky really cares about his students. However, hes a pretty tough grader and makes you work for it. But if you go to the extra help sessions and put in effort, he notices and your grade reflects that. Grading criteria isnt always quite clear, but hes very approachable and willing to discuss where you can improve.
As a beginner in drawing this this was quite difficult. Prof. Markowsky is a tough grader. You will be spending a lot of time on your drawings in the class. If you have questions/ concerns, reach out to him, very helpful. Anyways, you will have to work your tail off in this class!
Absolutely fantastic teacher, but is a class where you get out of it what you put into it. If you have the chance to take one of his classes I highly recomend it!
This is my second drawing class with Professor Markowsky and it was just as enjoyable as the first. He is always providing feedback to all students and offers private meetings to discuss your WIP. He genuinely wants to see you succeed but wants you to also challenge yourself. Hes by far my favorite professor!
Very knowledgable and gives good feedback. However, he is tough on grading and this is a difficult course. I was very unhappy when I planned a trip months ahead according to the syllabus and he moved the due date up by a week causing me to rush, then extended the date after I already turned it in. Be aware of due dates but don't plan ahead.
Professor Markowsky is the best teacher I had for my first drawing class. I was nervous before when I read the reviews but I soon realized he really just wants you to improve your skills and he gives you constructive and precise feedback. He is so calm and caring. I had internet issues and he was so caring and understanding. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!
Really nice professsor! He gave students clear description and usefel evaluation. I can learn a lot of new things.
Professor Markowsky was such a warm soul. One can tell that he is passionate about art, and it is reflective in his approach to teaching. He respects each students' personal style and influences, and he always provides constructive criticism, if not positive feedback. Definitely take his class because there's so much good to learn from him.
This was my first quarter at SCAD and the first drawing class I have ever taken. Professor Markowsky was the absolute best professor I could ask for. He is funny, nice, engaging and helps you learn so much. All projects are done in class and he wants everyone to succeed. I wish I could take him next quarter. 10000/10 TAKE HIM
My only real issue with this professor is that he seemed to group me with the people who could actually draw and would critique my work way too heavily. I would often find myself busting my butt to give my 110% and he still wanted more. Regardless, he gave good feedback and was generally pretty understanding.
Having him in my first quarter was a bit hard, not because he's a bad professor, just because I didn't really understand his teaching style. He grades on how much effort he thinks you're putting in, especially when he sees you're skilled. I struggled to understand that when taking his class, he cares he just doesn't know how to show it in a way.
I can't speak on how Prof. Markowsky's grading was before SCADNow, but taking his class as a semi-asynchronous student has been FRUSTATING. Do not recommend if you need structure. His assignment instructions are vague and unclear, and he does little to update his classes to any criteria changes outside of a passing comment during lecture.
As my first DRAW Prof., I would take him again. Extremely compassionate & specific to each student's critique (he WILL guide you if you can't draw), if you're already skilled he gives more critical feedback to push you. 5 real-life studies + sketchbook work, you learn from in-class demos; its a slow-burn, cherish the process class. Kind, caring!
Markowsky was super knowledgable in his craft and wonderful to have as a professor. While you do not have to be able to draw well he wants to see you improve and helps you do so! I was not expecting to learn as much as I did in this class. His grading reflects how much effort you put into your work. If you do it the night before it's obvious
Professor Markowsky was consistently rude to me and my fellow students. If you are not good at drawing he will grade you VERY harshly. Worst class I've ever taken. NEVER take him
Prior to this class I didn't know much about drawing, he does teach you a lot of things, but when it comes time to grading he can be very harsh / tough. Most of the people in my class didn't know how to draw and we got low grades, but we would always attend classes and the weekend extra help sessions. If you can draw, then take him.
