He is a really good teacher and lots of discussion in class. If you study for tests you should do fine.
Torlina is a very nice guy, but I hate his class. It's very hard to follow his lectures. He talks and talks and talks and it doesn't seem like anything important comes out of his mouth. I didn't learn anything in his class. It's impossible to take notes from his lectures, so I had to take them from the book for studying. Don't take him!
THE EASIEST CLASS IN THE WORLD AND YOU NEVER HAVE TO SHOW UP!!!!! Just do one easy midterm paper, and one easy final.
very interesting and enlightening. more people should be interested in what he has to say, CAUSE HE'S RIGHT! but really....he has a good open minded opinion
Put little noticable effort into lectures. I very often left class (which I missed twice the whole semster) disapointed in what had occured that day.
I am in totally agreeance with the girl that said that he talks and talks and talks. You can't learn anything from this guy. His exams are take home but he wants 2-3 pages for each qestion. DO NOT TAKE IT FROM HIM. He is a rambler...blah blah blah!
I'm sorry, but this guy just rambles and seriously can not shut his mouth. He interrupts when a student finally get's a word in and when he has you do presentations plan on going about a month after your scheduled time... he rambles so much that he can never seem to fit you in... Great guy, crappy class.
Jeff is an exceptional teacher. He has a broad knowledge of the material and knows how to apply it to real situations. He offers assistance to any students who are committed to the class, and provides highly relevant assignments. The only negative thing is that sometimes students can get things sidetracked, and he happily follows these tangents.
I don't mind liberal professors but when they mock/make fun of your own personal thoughts/beliefs he loses all credibility. I wish he would move to Canada where he could be happy instead of lecturing (little to no 2-way dialogue in his class) on how crummy the U.S. is. If I didn't need 3 credits to graduate I would have dropped him immediately.
This guy is so biased and opinionated and if you can get a word in edgewise you're wrong. Anti-Reagan, anti-Bush, anti-big business . . . anti-everything that made this country the most enviable in the world. Gets real defensive if you can find flaws (many) in his reasoning - so don't bother.
He is very helpful but he is definetly a rambler. Just come to him if you are struggling he'll help you out. Also, although the class can be boring because of the rambling it is easy! If you just scim the book and pay a little attention during class you'll do fine. Also, others have commented that he is biased. He isn't, he's also respectful.
Torlina has good intentions. Some things become redundant and it gets old. If only interested in good conversation and an easy grade, he's a good professor. If you have a serious interest in learning and/or the subject, might want to choose a different professor.
He's great, what a fun class!
He's great! I don't know why some people don't like him. He is very helpful and cares a lot more than most professors. He definetly isn't dry, and I think he's the opposite of biased. I still can't figure out what he believes. He seems to agree with everything that you say.
I took gender roles from him, and that was a pretty easy class. But his social theory class is a lot harder. He moves quick, and doesn't make sure everyone understands. I was lost from the first week of class, but hoped that reading the book would help catch up. Then his exams are confusing. Nice guy, not a very good teacher though.
Very knowledgeable, a good teacher, considerate.
this guy is funny he gets on tangents and wont stop. he get side tracked and you can tell he tries not to step on anyones toes. have to read 2 books which are interesting but you wonder why your reading them this class was EXTREMELY easy and he is a way fun professor. quizes on thursday on the chapter.. when he remembers ahaha
Professor Torlina was boring, and he didn't cover anything that was on the test. You had to read the textbook, and that still wasn't very helpful. I did get a good grade in the class, but it was from the essays we wrote, none of which were hard.
He is knowledgable and assigns great reading. He gets sidetracked when presenting and has energetic body language. Puts alot of emphasis on writing essays and papers but it is necessary to learn to research and write scholarly material as a student. If you show up, read and improve each paper you submit to him you will get a good grade and learn.
Interesting guy. Every day is a lecture and attendance doesn't matter. He doesn't really make sense when he lectures, so just soak up what you can and write good papers and you'll get an A. Nice guy, I just didn't learn anything from him.
MORON! he should not teach sociology!. If your opinions are different than him don't share them. The test don't reflect the lecture and the test are worded horribly. PS.. before you write your papers find out his opinion then write it reflecting his opinion and you'll do well
the guy says he values your opinion but that seems to be a joke. he could care less about your opinion. terrible teacher. terrible! would never take him again.
Great guy but not the greatest professor. His lectures are SO boring and hard to sit through. The class is pretty easy, your grade is basically three easy papers. Go to his office and he'll help you out TONS!
great teacher, helpful, loves to talk/discuss. tends to lecture and get off on a subject, but it was always interesting. he had quizes to encourage attendance, but you know when those days are. your grade is made up of 3 5 page papers.
No good. He is extremely biased concerning his own opinion and is not open to opposing perspectives. He actually did not grade one of my papers because it was contradictory to his own opinion an based my grade on a later paper. What kind of a professor is that?
I cant even believe some of the other people on here are talking about the same professor. I find him to be extremely welcoming of others opinions and accepting. Attending lectures is important because thats what the test is on, but I didn't study, just went to class, and I got an A.
I did not like this class very much. This professor wants your to really learn how to think in a different way --- not the way you normally do in college. I think this is good... but then on his tests I felt that if you were not thinking the way he wants you to then you get the questions wrong. It was confusing. Class attendance does help.
I enjoyed his class. He was interesting.
Crazy
This class was AWESOME! This guy is so sweet, he makes class interesting and he is always so enthusiastic. He is very very friendly and cares about his students. If you like to think outside of the box, be challenged and actually learn something.. take this class!!
Jeff does ramble at times, but he is the nicest guy! If you have any problems and you have been attending class and he knows that you care your grade, he will do anything to help you get a good grade! He is one of the nicest professors I have had and I would recommend him to anyone!
He likes to get people riled up, so if you don't like your opinion to be challenged, this class definitely isn't for you. He has an incredible and contagious love for Sociology. He's not the most organized, but provides good discussion, and great feedback.
Amazing teacher! Always getting us to think outside the box. Nicest guy--always helps you out with your grade, great class!
He is a very nice teacher, but he should give us more information before the test. Because his test are so difficult and long. Required very good English skill to understand his tests. 3 tests in each semester, 50 questions for first two, and then 75 in the final. Some questions are very long, almost a page.
he was prolly the best professor i had last semester and i really enjoyed his test they were pretty funny
I feel that either some of the previous posts are on the boarder line of slanderous or Jeff has improved at his profession since others have rated him. He does tend to ramble on, there is no question of his political views and he can be disorganized. Yet, he is passionate, respectful of opposing views and his class is thought provoking.
He is a great teacher! previous comments were stated that the tests were very difficult. All I have to say to that.... If you can read english and comprehend sentences, you should do great on the tests. They are common sense tests. Use the process of elimination. The questions are long, but fairly easy! He is a great guy with a big heart!
He's a pretty cool guy, he's kind of an old hippy. His class is super easy, though he has weird hang ups on letting you use laptops. He is real intelligent, but has a fairly obvious leaning towards leftist politics and being politically correct. But he's fine by me
He looks and acts like a hippy. But he's a pretty cool guy. He's really easy and chill about everything. The class was pretty fun.
I went to this class like 5 times. He was a funmy teacher, very hippy, but he loves what he is talking about. His tests are super easy, questions are forever long but are REALLY common sense. Lectures were entertaining but he always gets off the subject and i never really got anything out of it, but i didnt need it on the exams so thats ok.
Dude's a complete stud, loved his class.
Great instruction and insight to the topics. I have taken him for several classes and have appreciated his viewpoint. His tests are pretty simple, essay questions mostly. Doesn't care for technology and doesn't like laptops in the classroom
professor torlina is great, i love his class. a lot of people have talked about how easy his tests are, and yeah they are easy, but i remember all of the things that we are supposed to learn from the tests. as far as his lectures go, i love them, if you really pay attention to what he is saying you get a great lecture.
Good teacher, easy class. He helped us get involved and interested in the subject intead of just droning on and on like some professors. He definitely has strong political opinions, but I found him to be respectful of other views. It was also cool to hear about gender issues from a man's perspective.
This class is so easy! The professor is also really funny and interesting. He gets off on tangents, but it is still keeps my attention. You dont need to buy the text book, or read. I slept sometimes, never studied, and got and A on all the tests. The papers you have to write kind of suck, but he is an easy grader. I would recommend him!
He in an okay teacher. His tests are really really long and difficult to understand. He is a pretty funny guy but his tests are the only thing that is difficult in his class.
Dr. Torlina is a great teacher. He offers a traditional viewpoint but with a modern flair. Passionate about what he does and teaches. Tests are a little long but nothing too difficult if you understand the basics of sociology.
Torlina can be overly repetitive. Class can be a struggle to go to cause it goes real slow. Tests are extremely easy. If you half listened in class and have any brain you should get A's on all three. There are two book essays that are time consuming but he grades easy. There is no need to buy the textbook.
This class was easy! The tests are long but the correct answers are made pretty obvious. I never studied and still got A's on the tests. The 2 book essays are easy as well. Torlina lectures the entire class period so it can get boring, but overall i would recommend this class to anyone.
I had Jeff for Social Theory and Gender Roles. Attendance is mandatory if you want to get something out of the class. Half of the college learning experience is showing up. Jeff was extremely helpful/willing to help and passionate about sociology. The Soc Theory research paper was not my favorite but he helped me make it through.
No need to buy the textbook. You'll never need it but if you want it's on reserve at the library. You will need one of the two books for an essay. Really easy class.
inspiring
Easiest class I have ever taken. No need to buy the textbook, I was mad that I wasted my money on it. If you can read, you will get an A on his tests. I thought the class was really pointless and I didn't learn a thing; however, it was an easy A.
Is a really nice guy. He wants his students to want to learn really badly. He knows a lot, is very intelligent. Is interesting to listen too but he loves to talk and its really easy to get him off subject. Really nice guy wasn't too hard of a class he wants you to do well.
Love Dr Torlina! Very interesting to listen too. He tests on video's watched in class and readings on blackboard, but tests easy, does not make you memorize stuff. I am due for my baby almost during finals and he was more then willing to work with me on making sure I receive an "I" if my baby came early. Very chill, nice, nice guy! And funny!
Torlina was a blast as a teacher. He cares a lot about students, and wants them to do well. Go speak with him any time, and you'll see it in him. He does tend to get sidetracked, but his tangents are still helpful in understanding the subject matter. Most class periods were spent discussing comments from the students rather than what he planned.
Great teacher, was willing to listen and help me out even though I was a freshman taking a senior level class. Alot of reading but was interesting. Never had a problem with him having a problem with my opinions or anything. Was always open minded to listen to my points of view.
He is not clear on anything that he teaches and is very hard to understand what he wants. I learned nothing but I did get a B. He gets off track so easy and it is really annoying. He loves Sociology but the way he teaches is so unorganized you will be very frustrated. Take someone else I'm telling you.
His class is him going off in tangents, there is some discussion, but so confusing to know what to actually study for the test! He would not work with me at all, so I ended up having to drop his class, because otherwise I would have lost a 1200 dollar plane ticket... I would not recommend him.
The best teacher I had this semester. Dr Torlina is a brilliant man who has a passion for what he teaches. Class is amazing, he listens to what you have to say and adds his thoughts which are always interesting and insightful. Tests were long but easy and incredibly funny. Overall a great teacher and I would take all my classes from him if I could.
Great professor and awesome class. He does go off on tangents like others have said, but I thought he was still very clear. At times the topics seemed redundant. His tests were just essays, and they were easy. I would take a class from him again if the chance arose. Most of the class was just class discussion, so it was super easy.
Not a good teacher. Doesn't respond to any emails. His Ta's never help you ehich I think is very low rate. He wants you to base everything off his opinion and not yours. He tends to get side tracked alot which makes class really hard to understand.
I think this professor is horrible. He never really talks just about Sociology. He talks about political issues that have nothing to do with sociology. His TA's that graded our papers were not educated enough to do so. Overall I hope that I never have this professor again.
He's all over the place. Tests are LOOOOONG (some questions take 3/4 of a page). I don't feel like I learned anything in this class. Retaking the course just to have a different professor.
HIS TESTS ARE HORRIBLE. get ready to sit in the testing center for 3 hours to answer 50 multiple choice questions. he'd use up a whole page for one question. didn't learn anything in the class, no desire to go to it, and he was off topic all the time. If you actually want to learn about sociology, take it from a different professor.
I never got an A on any assignments, but still somehow managed to get an A- for the semester. I have no idea how he grades. There's no structure in the class, but some people like that (I don't). You can't study for tests b/c you NEVER use the book. I'm happy that I got an A-, but the bad TA's (grading papers) gave me a headache the whole semester.
Great Professor!!! Enjoyed his class, very willing to help students understand and learn concepts. Tests were long, had to write several papers. Professor Torlina remained very unbiased in discussions and presented "two sides" to every topic. Very smart, knows his topic, class had lots of compressed info.
He goes off on completely random tangents every class period. No real structure to things even though he has it all in the syllabus. That's where he refers you if you have any questions. His TA's were anal when it came to grading papers. He's a nice guy though, I guess. He's more focused on the book he's writting than his students.
He's a great guy and is passionate about the subject but he's not the teaching type. Tangents, not using the books he declared mandatory (wasted over 100 dollars) and did NOT follow the syllabus. I went for two weeks every class and finally gave up and did no work for the course and got a C-. How does he grade?!
I love Torlina he is very easy and makes class interesting. He is not hard at all and is very understanding and easy to talk to. He made me very interested into studying sociology.
This class was not worth my time. I was confused the etire time, and he NEVER answers questions clarly. He goes off on annoying tangents and is very hard to read. Test were 25 pages long, and took 2 hours. It was interesting though. He's really nice and encourages class interaction.
Fabulous teacher!! Those of you rating 1010 or going to take it-Be willing to work & actually take the time required in a college course to succeed. Seriously people. The works benefits YOU not him that's why he has you do it. Take him if you want to learn, actually will use your education & have any desire to go on with higher education.
Awesome teacher! Passionate. Tests are beyond easy. 2 Papers - both easy. Don't bother buying the text book. Values everyone's opinion.
Prof. Torlina is one of the best profs that I have had at UVU. Thank God someone at UVU values and tests upon thinking/understanding rather than memorization. He is extremely kind, helpful, and intelligent. Take a class while you can- He deserves to be teaching at a much better university. Pretty easy class, unless you hate reading and thinking.
Its about building yourself with great qualities for the real world.... He gets you out of the system and wants you to achieve the best.... Don't bother if your just going through the motion ...
Prof. Torlina was a really nice guy. He means well, he just seemed scattered. His TA graded the 1st paper, she did an awful job. I changed my paper according to what she wanted/graded, yet got a sub-par grade on it when he graded the final..Well, if he would have graded the first draft, I could've changed it to what HE wanted? Super lame.
Awesome professor!
The class seemed intimidating at first. I thought it was going to be really hard. The only assignments were 3 written tests, a double entry journal and a research paper. It was an interesting class. I loved the feedback Jeff gave on all of our papers. He seemed to really care about his students and took the time and effort to give valuable feedback
This teacher is basically a waste of your time if you aren't going into a sociology major. His assignments are pretty hard but his tests are pretty easy. If you do all the readings and attend class you will get an A for sure in this class. BUT IT IS SOOOOO BORING!! He doesn't talk a lot about sociology either. I still don't know what it is.
Jeff is my favorite prof at UVU. This class was excellent, as always. If you care about learning and want to go to grad school, take Jeff's classes. He will challenge your thinking and abilities. If you don't want to read the material, think critically, and have prolific discussions about the text, don't bother. A bit disorganized- but worth it.
First class I liked him. Broadened my critical thinking. new ideas. very interesting. Second class ..just a repeat. Doesn't stick to material. Random tangents.
This class is a piece of cake IF you attend class, do some of the reading, and listen to lectures. It's BORING though. Same thing every day. Boring lectures, no fun. He's very scattered, unorganized. He's really nice. He means well, he's just not organized at all. His tests are easy. I still don't know what sociology is at this point though..
Awesome professor and person! He does have so much on his mind and so much to say that sight at times. A lot of reading, but most of it is pretty interesting. He is very helpful and wants you to succeed. Everyone needs a Jeff Torlina as professor in their life :)
If you are interested in long lectures with no visual aids and a lot of reading the be my guest and take this class. Prof. Torlina seemed great in the beginning, but he is very repetitive and kind of boring. The exams are difficult and there are few HW assignments to balance out. Attendance is VERY important. This class is not an easy A.
This class was very challenging, but rewarding. It's true Jeff can go on tangents and isn't super organized, but I never had a professor so invested in my success, especially as it relates to writing good papers. He doesn't let poor critical thinking slip through - he has high expectations, and that makes him worth taking.
Professor Torlina is a good guy, but he can be pretty boring. I took sociology in high school and thought this would be pretty easy, but the questions on the tests are so wordy that you get lost. He only has a couple assignments throughout the semester: a book review, a write up on government meeting attendance, etc., you just need to read the book
Im frustrated because I feel like I should have learned so much more about sociology. It doesnt seem like he follows any facts in his teaching but rather just rants on about his opinions. He is very entertaining and made me giggle though. And it was fun to have discussion in class and hear what others had to say. I hated his tests!
Jeff gives long lectures and rambles somewhat. His tests are also long and wordy, but don't require any real studying as long as you attend class and listen to the lectures. Do well on the exams, read the assigned book and write your papers and you will pass the class.
This man actually expects you to come in having read the material and be prepared to discuss it with him. My favorite professor. He's willing to lecture if the class hasn't prepared to discuss but the best way to make use of his class is to discuss the ideas and theories of the reading. He is able to tie all these together beyond just the assignmen
Please, do not take this instructor.
This instructor is very interested in himself, I did not learn what I was hoping to learn.
Worst class I've taken. I knew nothing about sociology, and I still don't. His lectures last the whole class and he goes off on irrelevant tangents constantly. He gives no guidance for tests and his tests are based solely on his opinion. You basically have to know what he wants to get an okay grade on the test. Don't take this class. Save yourself
This professor is not helpful at all! If you want to take a class based on his opinions and not Sociology then take this class. All he does is rant about his beliefs for the whole class and still manages to teach nothing. The tests are very long and he doesn't teach you what's on them. Do not take this class. It is the worst class I have ever taken
WORST CLASS EVER!! Worst professor I have ever had. No structure. No learning. He is just interested in his own opinions about random things. Huge paper and tests that require you to have the mind of Jefferey Torlina to answer it. Some test questions are a page long (answers are a page too). Do not take this class whatever you do!
Worst professor there is. Worst class. I pay money to learn. He teaches nothing but his own thoughts. And if you think differently than he does, you won't do well.
You write one paper, and it's a hard one. He grades tough. Do a rewrite, he doesn't grade that tough on the rewrite. He responds quickly to emails. You have lots of reading to do and that's pretty much the only homework you have. You don't need to participate in class. You can totally skip class.
This class was not what I expected, but in a really good way. He has a different teaching style that takes some getting used to, but I loved it in the end. I learned a lot and loved the class!
Simply put, if you like organization and clarity do not take from him. I emailed him for help multiple times and never heard back. When and what his quizzes were on was not clear. Grades were NEVER entered into canvas. Went on tangents a lot. I love the subject and will retake it from a different professor. Take it from someone else.
Very boring lectures about whatever he has on his mind that day. No real way to study for the tests, you have to think the way he does. Questions don't come from the book or the lectures, not sure where they come from. There are a few quizzes and 3 main tests. One paper.
Jeff was a great teacher, he loves to share his life experience with his students. He seems to be a little "off" when you first meet him. He is constantly smiling, which isn't a bad thing but it just comes off as aloof. He's a great guy, and just wants to see you learn and succeed.
Of any class I have ever taken, this is my least favorite. He has no structure or lesson plan. The tests are EXTREMELY wordy & there is no way to prepare for them. He spends the entire class period ranting about the same vague opinions over and over again. It is painful to sit through. If you want to learn about Sociology, do NOT take it from him.
Worst class I have ever taken. He has zero structure. Class periods consist of his random opinions. He does not keep track of your grades. I have been clueless as to what this class is even supposed to be about. His tests are very wordy and impossible to study for. He is a very nice guy, just ZERO organization or structure.
He is a super nice guy but you don't learn a ton in his class. He would give you the shirt off his back. I learned way more in my high school sociology class then I did in his. He just likes to talk about his opinions on things. If you really want to learn sociology I would suggest someone else but if you want an easy class it's perfect.
Torlina was great. If you go to class and participate in the discussions, he definitely notices. The grade was based off papers and 3 tests. As long as you try on the papers and your grade improves, he'll take the highest grade of your papers. I loved him and found him very interesting.
Great guy, but the most spastic, unorganized teacher I've ever had. He also made it clear in the beginning of the course that he does not give out A's very often. There is no structure and the tests are impossible to study for. I showed up everyday, worked hard on the paper and tests and I still got a B.
This professor is good. The class is graded off 3 tests, 1 book essay, and 1 council meeting essay. His tests are easy, but there is too much words in a question which makes the tests hard unless you are really good at reading a textbook. This is an easy, common sense class, you don't need the best professor to pass.
